The Bible uses many metaphors to teach us about God, and one of the most common of those metaphors is "shepherd." But of course, metaphors only work when you're familiar with the cultural details. Dr. Tim Laniak joins the group to take them on a fascinating journey into the world of shepherds and Biblical passages about them. Drawing on his research living with Bedouin shepherds who lead their flocks in the same regions where Abraham and David once did, Tim explores how shepherds and sheep help us understand both God and ourselves better.

For most Christ-followers arguably the most familiar use of the word amazing is in the hymn “Amazing Grace.” And rightly so. God’s grace is truly amazing. But recently the Discover the Word group had a series of conversations about how amazing Jesus himself was to the people who encountered him in the first century. We saw nine times in Mark’s gospel when people were described as “amazed” at something Jesus said or did. This week, we want to move that conversation forward, by seeing five times in Luke when a similar thing occurs—people are amazed at Jesus.

Pastor and author Timothy Keller says the the "sexual revolution" that started in the 1960's was not the first sexual revolution. In fact, he believes it's a step back from the first, Christian sexual revolution that Jesus and his first century followers initiated. There is a phrase that appears continuously in the scriptures, particularly it seems to be an idea that is important to the writer of the letter to the Hebrews. And what makes this phrase interesting is that some see it as a command. I would suggest, rather, that it is an invitation—an invitation to join with the writer in walking with Jesus. The phrase? “Let us…” He is not telling his readers what they must do, but rather he is inviting them to join with him in pursuing these things together. The phrase “let us” appear thirteen times in Hebrews, and, for this series of conversations, we want to cherry-pick several of those invitations for closer consideration.

"Eating the bread of anxious toil." How does that make you feel? Well, the Discover the Word group goes on a journey this week, searching for the word "toil" in the Bible. One of the debated areas of biblical theology has to do with what we could call “atonement theory.” In other words, how did Jesus’ death on the cross accomplish our salvation. When ordered to evacuate the Philippines in the early days of World War II, General Douglas MacArthur made a promise to his troops and to the Filipino people, “I shall return.” Some two years later, MacArthur kept that promise by striding back onto Philippine soil as the victorious Supreme Commander of the forces in the Southwest Pacific Area, declaring “I have returned.” Famous returns are as old as history itself. Yet, the most significant of all returns is yet to occur—the return of Jesus Christ to this world. Doubt. One thing that every person who has lived long enough has in common is a struggle with doubt. Whether it’s questioning our calling because “How could God use me?” or prayers that have been not yet answered which can raise the question: Is God willing or able to help?” the issue of doubt is universal. What the Scriptures reveal is that the presence of faith does not necessarily mean the absence of doubt. In fact, we find examples of those who continued in the midst of their doubts. The gospels tell us that Jesus dined with sinners. All kinds. Often. "Family first." "The most important thing in the world is family." "You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them." There are lots of quotations that lift up the value of family. But there's one quote from a very influential person that doesn't usually make onto prints that people hang on their walls. It's a quote from Jesus, when he said "Unless you hate your family, you cannot be my disciple." Really? Yeah, it's right there in Luke 14:26. You can look it up. The way the world and the Bible define greatness could not be more different! The world describes greatness as strength, power, influence, and wealth. In the Bible, greatness is smallness. Greatness pursues reconciliation and forgiveness. Greatness welcomes even the least valuable in the world’s eyes. Greatness serves. It becomes obvious that the Bible’s story of greatness points us toward the only One who has fulfilled all of these criteria and is truly great—Jesus. And yet there’s also an invitation here too. Is it possible that in following Jesus’ example that we can become truly great by taking on the nature of a servant, and laying down our lives for others?

Someone once said that if it weren’t for people, life would be easy. Right? But people are pretty much the whole point when it comes to God’s great love. In Paul’s letter to the Romans, he spends most of the book laying out the theology of the gospel. Then he turns to apply his teaching to the practical of how the first century church in Rome can get along with each other as well as with their home city as followers of Christ. As we dig into Paul’s advice, we’ll find principles that translate for how as followers of Christ, we, too, can get along with each other and with those outside our faith communities.

We often don't know what our expectations are until they go unmet. And then suddenly, we discover that the things we put our hope in can't help us, satisfy us, or make us happy. George Bernanos once said, "In order to be prepared to hope in what does not deceive, we must first lose hope in everything that deceives." This is what the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes is all about. The wise teacher brings attention to many of our expectations and false hopes, and systematically crushes any confidence we have in what we think could make life worth living. But, actually, this is good news! By discovering our false hopes, we can discover true life and purpose in Jesus.
