To mark the launch of the BayNet Brandmeister Talk Group 31075, Kirk Smith K6RCT (Operator of the K6DOA DMR Repeater in SLO) joins us to talk Digital Mobile Radio, or DMR. DMR is a digital radio standard developed for use in commercial radio applications. Because of its commercial background, there are several operating and technological concepts that are unique to DMR that differ from what we are used to in other Amateur Digital Voice modes such as DSTAR and Yaesu System Fusion. In part one of this two part series, Kirk walks us through these fundamental DMR terms and concepts. In part two, we will talk about Brandmeister, cBridges topics and radio gear.

Tue, 30 Jan 2018 - 2h 19min - 189 - HRWB041-Digilent Analog Discovery II
When working with circuits diagnosis and design become nearly impossible if you can’t see what’s going on. Digilent has created a super portable and affordable instrument that when combined with its Waveform software suite, it delivers to its users a bench worth of test and measurement instruments in a USB device slightly larger than a deck of playing cards. George has been a huge fan of this device for a while and suggests that it’s a great option for those who need a lot of capability on a budget or those who need a lot of instruments in a portable package. Join Kaitlyn Franz, Instrumentation Product Manager for Digilent, as she introduces us to the many functions of the Digilent Analog Discovery 2.

Tue, 24 Oct 2017 - 2h 24min - 182 - HRWB034-Digital Radio Roundtable
This week George and Jeremy host a roundtable to discuss the differences and similarities between some of the most popular digital voice communication modes available to amateurs today. They are joined by Rod Hardman VA3ON (DMR), Rich Timpa KC6OBJ (DStar), David Ranch KI6ZHD (Yaesu System Fusion), and Randy Neals W3RWN (Allstar). In this conversation opinions and facts are explored about the benefits and potential of each of these digital modes of communication.

Tue, 10 Oct 2017 - 2h 37min - 181 - HRWB033-BITX40 Hacks, Mods, and Upgrades
The BITX40 is a $60 Arduino controlled 7 watt QRP SSB 40 meter transceiver designed and built by Ashar Farhan VU2ESE. They are available as a “kit” from http://www.hfsigs.com/ . The assembly only involves soldering wires for things like speakers, power, and microphones and also finding a suitable case. We originally spoke about the BITX40 back in Episode 26 (http://hamradio360.com/index.php/2017/06/20/ham-radio-360-workbench-26-the-bitx40-transceiver-an-introduction/)
Mark “Smitty” Smith KR6ZY is back with us again to share with us the modifications and upgrades he’s made to the original BITX40 over the summer. In this episode, we discuss adding upper sideband capabilities, adding an IF shift, and even multibanding the radio! Smitty shares lots of great resources and ideas in this episode of the Workbench.

George and Jeremy breakdown what it takes to build the new HR360/K6BEZ Antenna Analyzer and where to find all the information you’ll need to make it happen!George and Jeremy breakdown what it takes to build the new HR360/K6BEZ Antenna Analyzer and where to find all the information you’ll need to make it happen!
The K6BEZ antenna analyzer will provide VSWR measurements for any antenna from 1 to 30 MHz. Frequency and VSWR is shown on the built in LCD display. Data can optionally be sent over the USB cable to a PC running a program that will plot the VSWR on a graphical window display. The analyzer can be programmed to scan any sub band and has built in ranges for 160m, 80m, 60m, 40m, 30m, 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m, 10m.
