Glasser is the project name for California based singer, composer and producer Cameron Mesirow. She released 'Apply' - her first EP under that name back in 2009. She’s been working at her own pace ever since, and developing her sound, an original blend of electronic and dance music, with influence from folk traditions, dream pop, trance, jazz and even spoken word. It’s all tied together by her nimble, melodic singing voice. Her latest is called “crux” and is available on One Little Independent.

They sometimes work with collaborators - most often occupying the position of bass player. Their band has truly gone through fire - surviving breakups, endless fights, a horrible trampling by horse, and even the goodbye album. This moment finds them returning - 30 years wiser since their debut - with a brilliant, complex record, as fresh and original as any fan could wish for. El Khat is the musical brainchild of Eyal el Wahab, a Yemeni man who grew up in Tel Aviv. He makes his own instruments in the tradition of impoverished people all over the world. The band is named after the drug – Khat – a stimulant chewed like tobacco across the Middle East and in Africa, and you’d better check where you are before partaking. Its legality varies by location, as does the punishment for possession! El Khat’s music is based in the traditional sounds of Yemen, but it is not frozen in amber, this is not anthropology.  This is living modern music for you to listen to now. Their latest is called Albat Alawi Op. 99 and it is available on Glitterbeat.

She made her professional debut at thirteen, and over the years she has reinvented sitar music, playing with musicians from various genres, cultures and geographies, looking for new situations and contexts to use its inimitable voice. As she puts it, she “de-exotified” the Sitar. Flamenco, hip hop, jazz, and cinematic scores are all fair game. Her latest record, the first of a trilogy is called 'Chapter 1: FOREVER, FOR NOW.' Featuring production and collaboration from Arooj Aftab and Nils Frahm. It is available through Leiter, and on streaming services.

Frankie and The Witch Fingers returned to KEXP’s studios in support of their 7th studio record. It’s been an 11-year run already for the Bloomington, Indiana band, now based solidly in the thriving Los Angeles psych-rock scene. What started as a one-man-band - Dylan Sizemore on guitar, vocals, and stomping away on a kick drum - has evolved and adapted into a 6-piece prog/post-punk juggernaut - now featuring Nikki “Pickle” Smith from Death Valley Girls and Nick Aguilar, previous touring drummer for Mike Watt of the legendary Minutemen. The new album is called 'Data Doom' and is available on Greenway Records.

Youth Lagoon returns, renewed and refreshed to the studio and to the road. After the project's debut in 2011, and the following 2 albums, songwriter Trevor Powers announced the end of the band after only 5 years, in 2016. He needed to move on, and released two albums under his own name. Never say never though - after surviving some severe unexpected health problems in 2021 Trevor found himself reconnecting with the parts of himself, he had left behind. Self-acceptance and love brought a new perspective, and he resurrected Youth Lagoon with the release of the latest album 'Heaven Is A Junkyard,' available on Fat Possum Records.

On the show this time it’s Palestinian-Jordanian band 47SOUL. 

47SOUL is named for the year 1947, which was the year before the Palestinian Nakba and the last year people could move freely from place to place in Bilad Al-Sham, or The Levant. The band fuses a traditional Arabic dance form - Dabke - with electronic hip hop, rock, reggae, and reggaeton to create what is known as Shamstep. This is refugee art, this is anti-border music. The band often says - “Every land is a holy land, seeking recognition.”

Their singer Ousman Ag Mosa lives, as he says, “everywhere in the desert” - because he is a nomad. Generally he walks somewhere south of Algeria and north of Mali.  The Tamasheq people want to preserve their culture, their way of life, and their land.  He sings in Tamasheq, to keep their poems, history and the music alive.  Their latest album “Tamotäit” is available on Glitterbeat Records.

There’s a vibe, a hypnotic groove, and a poetic humanness that pulls you in. There’s also the Blues - the universal music of self-expression in the face of persecution. These musicians have faced hardship and oppression, and it’s not over. A coup in 2020, another in 2021, the withdrawal of the French military and ongoing messy battles between various factions has made civilian life very dangerous. Their songs call for unity, and bravely run counter to the more fundamentalist groups, some of whom would ban music altogether. This record features playing from Daniel Lanois, banjo player Wes Corbett and fiddler Fats Kaplin, highlighting the band’s Americana influences. It’s called 'Amatssou' and was produced remotely by Lanois. It is available through Wedge.

NONBINARY GIRLFRIEND is the solo project of Portland singer Anaïs, a fresh start after the dissolution of their previous project Cry Babe. Cry Babe had been the inspiration for some characters in the film 'Somebody That I Used to Know' starring Alison Brie and Dave Franco, and when the two writer/actors suggested they would come to see a show, that provided Anaïs the impetus to form this new band. The record is a beautiful combination of sing-along anthems and emotional catharsis.

NONBINARY GIRLFRIEND is the solo project of Portland singer Anaïs, a fresh start after the dissolution of their previous project Cry Babe. Cry Babe had been the inspiration for some characters in the film 'Somebody That I Used to Know' starring Alison Brie and Dave Franco, and when the two writer/actors suggested they would come to see a show, that provided Anaïs the impetus to form this new band. The record is a beautiful combination of sing-along anthems and emotional catharsis.

Their debut as NONBINARY GIRLFRIEND is 'Big And Kind,' available on Bandcamp.

She applies her breathtaking vocal technique to a refreshing blend of 300 year old Kurdish folk-songs, and her own jazz and pop influences. She is not afraid to address the suffering of the Kurdish people, or the struggles facing women - so much so that her music has at times been banned, her life has been threatened, and she has migrated as a result.

Yo-Yo Ma said “To hear Aynur’s voice is to hear the transformation of all the layers of human joy and suffering into one sound. It reaches so deep into our soul, tears into our hearts, and then we are for one moment, joined as one. It is unforgettable!”

Her latest album, 'Hedûr - Solace of Time,' is available through The Orchard distribution.

He’s played with slide virtuoso Derek Trucks and with Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder. He formed another band with Israeli singer Idan Raichel. He performed at the World Cup alongside Alicia Keys and Shakira. He’s clearly earned the right to be reviewed without mention of his father. But - he’s got the maturity to enjoy his connection to family and history. His latest album is named “Ali.” It’s another collaboration - this time with Texan psych-rock meets hip-hop trio Khruangbin - all covers of songs by his Dad. It’s available on Dead Oceans.

It’s impossible to overstate the importance of this band - they originate a sound. They are pioneers of psychedelic cumbia and all cumbia music has changed - or more properly all music has changed because of them. The lineup has also changed, but the group is still going. Like a family, they straddle generations. There are more than 30 albums available on vinyl through Infopesa Records, and on streaming services.

They have not released an album or really been performing live in over 12 years, but now that they are playing again - they rocked the 2023 Vive Latino festival - we are holding out hope for a new record. Their most recent full-length is 'Caballeros del Albedrío' available on Terrícolas Imbéciles Records and Bandcamp. They perform in masks - in accordance with the motto - “No importa tu cara, importas tú.” It’s not your face that’s important - it’s you.

On the show this time, it's the avant songwriting of cellist Mabe Fratti. Mabe Fratti is a composer and cellist, born in Guatemala and now living in Mexico City. She is a rare bird - a cello player who also sings, who actually sings while playing the cello.  Her music is harmonically complex, rhythmically intrepid, and doesn’t shy away from dissonance. Against this backdrop she creates out of the ordinary melody - often surprisingly catchy.  She creates honestly, and - very closely with her chosen family of musicians. She would say they work “softly” with lots of room for improvisation and the musical personality of each player, of each friend. On the show this time, it's the avant songwriting of cellist Mabe Fratti. Mabe Fratti is a composer and cellist, born in Guatemala and now living in Mexico City. She is a rare bird - a cello player who also sings, who actually sings while playing the cello.  Her music is harmonically complex, rhythmically intrepid, and doesn’t shy away from dissonance. Against this backdrop she creates out of the ordinary melody - often surprisingly catchy.  She creates honestly, and - very closely with her chosen family of musicians. She would say they work “softly” with lots of room for improvisation and the musical personality of each player, of each friend. Her latest 'Se Ve Desde Aqui' is available on Unheard of Hope records.

They understand that in times when the patriarchal and fascist elements of society rise, it's essential that someone, something, somewhere - rises in opposition. To critique.  To mock. They use exaggerated characters that say outrageous things about the ridiculous and absurd things occurring in this time.  In this way they comment on masculinity, shootings, drug abuse and ADD, crime, the failures of “evolution”, monkeys of course, and for some reason - Shrimp. Their latest, 'Cave World,' is available on Year 0001.

Clinton Fearon is the real deal, an all-killer no-filler Jamaican reggae legend. He built his first guitar himself, at the age of 10, out of a single slab of wood, after seeing a life changing show - the Skatalites live in Kingston. He’s been living in Seattle part time since the late 80’s. He released an EP with his group The Defenders in 1989. Since then, with the Boogie Brown Band and as a solo artist, he’s put out a staggering 14 albums - culminating in his latest "Breaking News” available on the French label Baco Records.

Sofi Tukker is a duo - Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern. They met at an event - he was DJing, she was singing Bossa Nova. Tucker asked if he could remix a song, and they’ve been working together ever since. While they were both attending Brown, Tucker did a DJ set opening for the electro-funk-disco duo The Knocks. They encouraged him and Sophie to move to New York to make music. Good move. Their very first EP 'Soft Animals' opens with the song “Drinkee” which was eventually nominated for a Grammy. Their latest album 'WET TENNIS' (which stands for “When Everyone Tries To Evolve, Nothing Negative Is Safe”) is available on Ultra Music.

Satellites describe themselves thus - “Lost somewhere between the mysterious alleys of 70s Istanbul, and the scorching sun and crystal blue sea of Jaffa Tel Aviv, the Şatellites’ sound shimmers between traditional Turkish folk and instrumentation, ethereal psychedelic guitar leads and groovy dance-floor basslines. The resulting concoction of songs draws on cross-continental influence, yet at its core is a desire to illuminate the vivid qualities of classic Turkish music, honoring the Anatolian folk and psych artists from this golden era of music.
