In this new format, First & Last, we talked with two amazing women: Western States 100 first-place woman and female course record holder, Courtney Dauwalter, and the very last finisher, Jennifer St. Amand, who finished with just 21 seconds to spare. This new feature gives listeners insight into how WS100 unfolded for both runners who had two of the most compelling finishes at this year’s event. 

Dauwalter lives in Leadville, Colorado, and is a retired school teacher turned professional ultrarunner. Her running resume is nothing short of staggering with first-place finishes from around the US and abroad, including UTMB, Hardrock, Tahoe 200, Tarawera, Moab 240 and others. This interview was recorded just days before her record-setting performance and win at the Hardrock 100. 

St. Amand is from Dexter, Minnesota, a former social worker and now recruiter for the Minnesota Army National Guard. Jen has ten 100-mile-races under her belt, including seven sub-24 hour finishes with two of those under 19 hours at the Tunnel Hill 100 in Illinois.

Kati Laan joins the show during a previously recorded live broadcast from the San Francisco Running Company (SFRC) in San Anselmo, California, where she competes on the SFRC Running Team. Laan recently nabbed a second place female finish at the HURT 100 in Hawaii.

Wesley’s story features his weight-loss journey, positive attitude and pursuit to affect positive health outcomes in others. Marshall Ulrich is an endurance athlete and ultrarunning legend with over 130 ultra finishes. He recently crossed Death Valley for the 30th time on foot in February when he set out to raise money in honor of his friend and teammate, Mark Macy. Macy is a long-time friend and recently competed on Amazon’s World's Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji with his son, Travis. Ulrich’s team, The Stray Dogs also competed alongside the Macy’s during the adventure race. Eco-Challenge Team Stray Dogs originally included both Ulrich and Macy until Macy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2018.

Konyn suffered a rare but life-threatening injury after passing the 150-mile mark of the 200-mile race. He talks to Scotty about the details of his medical condition and the helicopter and medical crew that came to his rescue, not to mention his pacer that helped out when Konyn was doubled over in pain.

The Last Annual Heart of the South Road Race

"Tropical" John Medinger has been involved in the sport of ultrarunning since 1981, when the first issue of UltraRunning Magazine was published. His impact has been widespread - from the Western States president to publisher of UR, to founder of some of the sport's most notable races including Quad Dipsea and Lake Sonoma 50. Needless to say, he's easily earned a spot as one of the most respected legends in the sport of ultrarunning.

While Tropical John's voice can be heard announcing finishers at the Western States finish line in Auburn, he also maintains a prominent voice in the magazine. We spoke with John about his ultrarunning career, the history of the magazine, as well as his piece, "Four Decades of Ultrarunning" in the 40th anniversary special issue coming out in February.

Jeff Stern recently set the FKT on the Backbone Trail in Southern California. After most of his races were canceled this year, he completed extensive research and proper scouting on the the trail in order to go for the FKT.
