- 50 - Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
Tom Cruise has returned to save movie theaters once again by delivering another perfect movie: Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. We compare Dead Reckoning to other "part one" movies from this summer (especially Fast & Furious, over and over), talk about how the movie nails the blend of returning and new characters, and revel in the franchise's confidence to not overly rely on characters issuing quip after quip. We talk about the retcon that doesn't strain credulity, the movie balancing "fridging" (bad) with impactful deaths and emotional stakes (better), and the confidence in both its action scenes and its more dramatic scenes. We admire the practical effects and stunts on display. We look ahead to Dead Reckoning Part Two (which will save theaters once again) and the new actors in the fold. Joey issues an important apology/correction.
Thu, 13 Jul 2023 - 49 - Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
For the first time in four years, Tom Cruise has felt the need... the need to make a new movie! He's back with Top Gun: Maverick, and we're here to cover it in full spoilery detail. We talk about Tom Cruise's triumphant return to movies in a role that seems to reflect back on his career and in a movie that seamlessly continues the story from 36 years ago. We talk about the new pilots in Top Gun: Maverick (like Miles Teller, Monica Barbaro, and Glen Powell) and wonder where Manny Jacinto was hiding. We praise the character development (and Lady Gaga's musical contributions!), explore the "lore" of the shirtless beach football scene, and admire the extent to which these actors traveled to fly these planes. We also share some slight Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness spoilers (from 34:15 to 34:55) and then look ahead to both Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One and Elvis (for our sister show #HANX for the Memories). Update: We hope Lady Gaga becomes "two-time Academy Award winner Lady Gaga."
Fri, 27 May 2022 - 48 - 046 The Cruisies: The Tom Cruise Awards
At long last, the time has come to (once again) don our tuxedos and roll out the red carpet. Welcome to The Cruisies: The Tom Cruise Awards! All podcast long, we’ve talked about our favorite (and least favorite) parts of Tom Cruise’s movies, and we announced our official selections for the best and worst of what Tom Cruise’s filmography has to offer and opened the voting to the public. Now, your votes have been tallied, our very special guest Juhi Khemani has verified the results, and it’s finally time to reveal our picks — as well as the fans’ selection — for each and every category. Live, from the internet, it’s The Cruisies: The Tom Cruise Awards!
Fri, 24 Jul 2020 - 47 - 045 Ranking Tom Cruise's Movies
Before we take a few weeks off to let the votes tally up for the Cruisies (The Tom Cruise Awards), we're working our way through one more episode, and we're ranking Tom Cruise's movies. As always, there's a weird alchemy here that doesn't quite make sense, as we combine the movie's "quality" with Cruise's performance, add a dash of how much we like him in the movie, and toss in some other hints and touches of things we can't quite articulate, and wind up with a comprehensive list of his films and roles in an order that only makes sense to us.
Fri, 03 Jul 2020 - 46 - 044 Tom Cruise Clip Show
We may have covered every movie that stars or features Tom Cruise, but there's a whole body of work that he's done that we haven't covered. Welcome to the Tom Cruise Clip Show! In this episode, we're working our way through a cameo appearances in movies and TV shows, as well as some stunt videos and late night appearances that surfaced on YouTube. Watch all of the clips we're talking about here!
Fri, 26 Jun 2020 - 45 - 043 The Cruisies: The Tom Cruise Award Nominations
We've watched and podcasted about all 42 movies that Tom Cruise has made so far. Each episode, we've talked about our favorite and least favorite moments, and we've ended each episode by nominating that movie for awards that showcase the very best (and very worst) that Tom Cruise's filmography has to offer. We've pared down our lists, and -- at long last -- the time has come to announce the official selections for the Cruisies: The Tom Cruise Awards. Sit back, relax, listen to all of the films, roles, moments, and actors nominated, then go to cageclub.me/bracket and cast your votes on who's taking home those sweet Cruisies awards! (Voting closes on Wednesday, July 15.)
Fri, 19 Jun 2020 - 44 - 042 Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
It's all led to this. Not only is Mission: Impossible - Fallout the final installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise (so far), but it also marks the final movie in Tom Cruise's filmography (also, so far). All we can say is... what a way to go out! We're joined by Zack DeZon to HALO jump out of a plane and talk about all the action, excitement, and running that Mission: Impossible - Fallout has to offer. In this episode, we discuss the continued evolution of the ensemble cast (as well as the addition of the wonderful Hattie Shaw, er, Vanessa Kirby), the continuation of storylines and themes set up in Rogue Nation, and -- seriously -- how long is Tom Cruise going to run?
Fri, 12 Jun 2020 - 43 - 041 American Made (2017)
We're running drugs, guns, and "freedom fighters" from Arkansas to Nicaragua to Panama -- and back again -- as we take off and chat about American Made! We're, ahem, running out of runway on #CruiseClub, with only one more movie to cover after American Made (a little indie called Mission: Impossible - Fallout), but we're going out in style as Cruise re-teams up with Doug Liman to tell the (mostly) true story of Barry Seal. In this episode, we're going deep to talk about Cruise's charisma, the kinetic docu-style filmmaking style, and how this movie (like a few other recent Cruise movies) winds up being a pretty perfect distillation of his career to this point.
Fri, 05 Jun 2020 - 42 - 040 The Mummy (2017)
While the Dark Universe never came to fruition, we'll always have The Mummy. But is Tom Cruise the Mummy? By the end of the movie, the answer is unclear. The world may never know what this ragtag bunch of misfits' series of adventures would entail, but joining us to talk about the first installment is Kate Hudson (#HudsonFive). In this episode, we talk about all the stunts that worked, all the plot dumps that didn't, and wonder where this franchise could have gone had a few more people gone to the theater to support it. We also discuss all of our favorite miscastings, wasted performances, and schlocky CGI that The Mummy has to offer.
Fri, 29 May 2020 - 41 - 039 Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)
Aside from the Mission: Impossible series, Tom Cruise isn't one to dabble in sequels, which makes Jack Reacher: Never Go Back all the more unusual. Based on the 18th (!!!) novel in the series, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back feels like a much later entry in the franchise than a first sequel. How could the creative team possibly be out of ideas already? Mike dons his Third Time's A Charm cap as we discuss the action we like, the plot we don't like, and the overwhelming "sure, okay" of most of the rest of the movie. It's not a bad movie, but when your filmography is as stacked as Tom Cruise's...
Fri, 22 May 2020 - 40 - 038 Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)
Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation has to do some serious heavy lifting, far more so than any other movie in the franchise. Not only does it have to tell an engaging, standalone story, but it's asked to follow the events of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol more closely than any previous installment has done, while also setting things up for Mission: Impossible – Fallout. (What is this, an MCU movie?!) If there's one man who's up for the task, it's Ethan Hunt. (Also, we guess, Tom Cruise.) In this episode, we talk about Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation's merits as a standalone movies, how it changes the face of the Mission: Impossible franchise, and where we go from here.
Fri, 15 May 2020 - 39 - 037 Edge of Tomorrow (2014) (or: Live Die Repeat)
It's truly a shame that Edge of Tomorrow didn't do well in theaters -- so poorly, in fact, that it was later retitled Live Die Repeat -- because it's one of Tom Cruise's best movies yet. With the benefit of hindsight (as well as tastes that almost perfectly align with what this movie's trying to do), we're able to see Edge of Tomorrow as the masterpiece that it is. Joining us to gush about this movie, the effective use of the Groundhog Day plot device, and all things Emily Blunt is Nick Jenkins (Reel Bad). Join us as we live the same day, over and over and over again, as we become stuck in a time loop.
Fri, 08 May 2020 - 38 - 036 Oblivion (2013)
One year before Tom Cruise starred in Edge of Tomorrow (and blew our collective minds), he found himself in another big-budget sci-fi movie: Oblivion. The finished product doesn't quite hold up as well as his next film will, but there's a lot to admire here, and even more to pick apart. We're joined by Matt Delhauer (The Ginger Geek Podcast) to talk -- spoiler alert! -- lost love, clones, and whether or not your lost love can easily translate from one clone to the next. We also talk about the best parts of Oblivion, the worst parts of Oblivion, and why it didn't quite hold up the way it could have, albeit through no fault of its own. (Also! Scheduling update: #CruiseClub is now weekly!)
Fri, 01 May 2020 - 37 - 035 Jack Reacher (2012)
Jack Reacher is a by the book action thriller. Jack Reacher is an action movie that subverts your every expectation. What *is* Jack Reacher? We're trying to figure out why the latest new franchise for Tom Cruise works as well as it does, almost in spite of the overwhelming odds its script hurls against it. We also talk about the palpable sexual tension that goes hand in hand with an almost absolute lack of overt sexuality, the impressive ensemble cast that is almost wholly given *just* not enough to do, and the movie's funny moments that serve to break the tension in a movie otherwise filled without much in the way of relief.
Fri, 24 Apr 2020 - 36 - 034 Rock of Ages (2012)
Rock of Ages marks the beginning of the end for #CruiseClub, in a way. For the final time (to date, anyway), Tom Cruise is not the star of a movie. Joining us to talk about all of the chaos of Rock of Ages are both of the co-hosts of The Contenders: Aislinn Addington and Tobin Addington. In this episode, we talk about the many types of chaos in the movie, the many ways it fails its characters (and its audience), and its juking box musical soundtrack. We also fiercely debate whether or not the movie is fun, which seems to fundamentally divide the four of us by how we choose to watch this movie.
Fri, 10 Apr 2020 - 35 - 033 Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)
Going from Mission: Impossible – Ultra Lite (Knight and Day) to Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol offers one of the more eye-opening turnarounds in #CruiseClub so far. The latest installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise (to this point in the podcast's timeline, anyway) may mark both the franchise's high-water mark, as well as the podcast's. Joining us as we take a trip up a building in Dubai is Jeremy Kelly. In this episode, we discuss the best action scenes, the new team members, and the new tech. We also debate where Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol ranks in the franchise, and wonder where Rogue Nation and Fallout will land among our favorite Cruise movies when all is said and done.
Fri, 27 Mar 2020 - 34 - 032 Knight and Day (2010)
What if Ethan Hunt had to drag you along while on a mission to save the world? Does Ethan Hunt (or, in this case, "Ethan Hunt") ever truly go rogue? Should you trust a stranger? What if that stranger looks and acts like Tom Cruise? What if Gal Gadot shows up out of nowhere? These are just some of the many questions Knight and Day asks, and we're determined to get to the bottom of things. Joining us to help answer these questions are Walter Hickey (of Numlock News) and Jessica Collins (who spent most of her life with the last name Knight and seems perfectly suited to help us out). Opinions are split! We talk about what works, what doesn't, and how this movie is thiiiiis close to being great, and how it's almost an all-timer. (Also: yes, we get the actor who plays the villain's name wrong almost the entire podcast, but we fix it by the end!)
Fri, 13 Mar 2020 - 33 - 031 Valkyrie (2008)
We continue our journey through the "lesser known" portion of #CruiseClub with Valkyrie, a movie where Tom Cruise tries to kill Adolf Hitler. Joining us to talk about this film is John Brooks, fresh off his appearance last week on our Toy Story 2 episode on #HANX for the Memories! We discuss Cruise's portrayal of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, how true the movie was to the historical events leading up to this assassination attempt, and the fact that just about no one seems to know von Stauffenberg's name or story. We also discuss how Valkyrie fits into the series of more obscure Tom Cruise movies that we've been covering lately, and which looks to continue for a few more movies!
Fri, 28 Feb 2020 - 32 - 030 Tropic Thunder (2008)
Four of the next five movies we're covering in #CruiseClub -- Tropic Thunder, Valkyrie, Knight and Day, and Rock of Ages -- along with our last episode (Lions for Lambs) represent most of the biggest unknowns (to us, anyway) for the rest of #CruiseClub. Tropic Thunder continues this mini-run with a very uncommon role for Tom Cruise: supporting actor. We're heading to Vietnam and recording this podcast guerrilla-style, but before we do, we're enlisting the help of Kyle Reinfried (of Foodie Films) and Zack DeZon. In this episode, we talk about Cruise's minor (but memorable) role and scenes, Matthew McConaughey's deep love for his clients (and for TiVo), and whether or not the comedy holds up more than a decade later.
Fri, 14 Feb 2020 - 31 - 029 Lions for Lambs (2007)
By this point in Tom Cruise's career -- we're barely over a decade away from catching up -- there are very few surprises left. We've seen (and love!) just about everything that's coming up for the rest of this show's run. Then, there's Lions for Lambs, a movie neither of us had ever seen, and neither of us knew anything about. What a world this is that still holds some secrets! Joining us on this episode is resident Meryl Streep expert Michael Domanico of the Not Her Again podcast. It's especially fitting that Michael joins us for this episode, as Cruise and Meryl square off for one-third of Lions for Lambs... and Michael had never seen this movie either! In this episode, we talk about whether the three story structure worked, whether or not the movie stuck its political (or apolitical?) landing, and why people haven't been casting Tom Cruise as a politician for years. He's born to play the part!
Fri, 31 Jan 2020 - 30 - 028 Mission: Impossible III (2006)
Your mission, once again, should you choose to accept it, is to listen to our #CruiseClub episode about Mission: Impossible III! In this episode, we're joined by Dan Colon to help us figure out how the third installment in the franchise compares to the other Mission: Impossible movies, and whether it lives up to our hype our memories had created. We also talk about JJ Abrams's influence behind the camera (for his first feature-length film), whether or not the "in media res" opening works for this story, and which stunts in Mission: Impossible III stand out the most. We also heap praise upon Philip Seymour Hoffman, wish for far more Keri Russell, and welcome the permanent new addition of Simon Pegg to our team. Would alternate casting choices have been better? Listen to the episode and find out!
Fri, 17 Jan 2020 - 29 - 027 War of the Worlds (2005)
Three years after teaming up for Minority Report, Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise reunited once again for War of the Worlds. To talk about their second (and, to date, final) collaboration, we're welcoming in Jeremy Kelly, our (brace yourself for this hyper-specific title) resident mid-2000s sci-fi remake expert. In this episode, we talk about the ways this movie differs from the original H.G. Wells version of War of the Worlds, the effectiveness of a small story within a global story, and the movie's abrupt ending. We also discover that we like and dislike wildly different sequences of the movie from one another, realize that this is (in more ways than one) a secret sequel to The Shawshank Redemption, and keep an eye out for Channing Tatum's uncredited role as "Boy in Church" (note: he is still not in this movie).
Fri, 03 Jan 2020 - 28 - 026 Collateral (2004)
Rarely in his career does Tom Cruise play a villain, which is part of what makes Collateral so special. The other special part: this movie rules! Joining us to talk about Michael Mann’s film is Tobin Addington of The Contenders podcast. In this episode, we talk about Cruise’s ability to blend into the background, the seemingly arbitrary distinction between Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, and what could have been done to give the film’s female characters a bit more to do. We also wonder if Collateral (at long last) offers a true challenger to Gone in Sixty Seconds‘s (to date) undisputed title of “Best Movie Cops.” In the epic battle of Delroy Lindo and Timothy Olyphant vs. Peter Berg and Mark Ruffalo, who ya got? Taking all bets!
Fri, 20 Dec 2019 - 27 - 025 The Last Samurai (2003)
It’s time to tackle another historical epic on #CruiseClub, and we’re heading to Japan in the 1870s to talk about Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai. Joining us on this journey back in time is our resident Japanese expert, Holly Gore. In this episode, we talk about whether or not this movie falls victim to the white savior syndrome, whether or not it “earns” its two-and-a-half hour runtime, and how much it feels like Far and Away. (How do you like my hat, Shannon?) We also heap praise upon praise at Ken Watanabe’s performance (the best part of The Last Samurai), admire the scale and grandeur of the film’s climactic battle scene, and talk about that time that Tom Cruise almost died while making this movie. You know, typical stuff.
Fri, 06 Dec 2019 - 26 - 024 Minority Report (2002)
With Minority Report, we’ve officially entered the Steven Spielberg era of #CruiseClub, as two of Tom Cruise’s next four movies will see the two legends of the big screen team up. We saw this one coming, though, even before it was made. Joining us from the milky depths of our precog tank are two first-time guests to the TomTom Club: Nicole Sweeney (Snark Squad) and Dan Colon! In this episode, we talk about whether or not the special effects in Minority Report hold up (nearly twenty years later), the prequel (as well as the gritty ending) that almost was, and the Cruise/Spielberg team-up. We also talk about Colin Farrell as a red herring, Max von Sydow as a villain hiding in plain sight, and Neal McDonough’s "big stupid baby head."
Fri, 22 Nov 2019 - 25 - 023 Vanilla Sky (2001)
Open your eyes... it’s time for a new episode of #CruiseClub! Tom Cruise teamed up with Cameron Crowe once again for 2001’s Vanilla Sky, another movie falling squarely into this era of challenging movies and roles. To help us make sense of the dream logic in this one, we’re joined by two brand new guests to the TomTom Club: Zack DeZon and Alissa Larson! In this episode, we talk about Tom Cruise in a mask, Penelope Cruz as an impossibly adorable manic pixie dream girl, and Cameron Diaz getting what’s coming to her (following My Best Friend’s Wedding). We also talk about Vanilla Sky as a remake to Abre Los Ojos (also starring Penelope Cruz), and try to parse through the pop culture references to decide whether or not this movie nails its third act twist.
Fri, 08 Nov 2019 - 24 - 022 Mission: Impossible II (2000)
All we wanted to do was spend our "holiday" free soloing some mountains in Utah, but we got a rocket shot at us, telling us to do a podcast episode about Mission: Impossible II, so here we are. To help us break down the second installment in one of the best franchises in cinematic history is Austin Wolf-Sothern of Cinema Stories on YouTube. In this episode, we talk about where Mission: Impossible II ranks within the franchise and how we would make Thandie Newton's storyline better. We also admire the final action set piece, wonder if the final fight could have been better, and talk about the world that could have been if this film had wrapped on time. Once again, this is your mission, should you choose to accept it.
Fri, 25 Oct 2019 - 23 - 021 Magnolia (1999)
We continue to mount the world from the lofty heights offered by #CruiseClub as we talk about Magnolia, our second movie in a row made by one of the greatest filmmakers of all-time. Joining us to talk about Paul Thomas Anderson’s sweeping epic are Tobin Addington of The Contenders, as well as our religion expert, John Brooks. In this episode, we talk about Cruise’s revelatory performance, our favorite (and least favorite) storylines, and the frogs… oh, the frogs! Between two longtime fans of the film, one who saw it once and really enjoyed it, and a first-time viewer of the movie (and it isn’t who you might think!), we’re bringing a wide range of knowledge, insight, and perspective to this one, with one common theme: we’re all in awe of just about everything that’s happening here.
Fri, 11 Oct 2019 - 22 - 020 Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
#CruiseClub has been nearly a flawless journey so far, and we’re still ascending! In 1999, Tom Cruise released what many people consider to be two of the best movies of all-time: Eyes Wide Shut and Magnolia. We’ll get to Magnolia in two weeks, but the time has come to finally cover Stanley Kubrick on the podcast network, and boy was this discussion a good one! Joining us in their podcast-appropriate tuxedos, capes, and masks are Chris Podcasts of Now and Again and Tobin Addington of The Contenders. In this episode, we talk about Kubrick’s soul-crushing shooting schedule, what this movie is really about, and whether or not Tom Cruise was properly cast in this part. Fidelio.
Fri, 27 Sep 2019 - 21 - 019 Jerry Maguire (1996)
After the action-fueled highs of Mission: Impossible in our last episode, it's time for Cruise to wade into the romantic comedy waters and snag himself a Golden Globe for his role as the titular Jerry Maguire! We're going guest-less in this episode, but there's more than enough to talk about, like our admiration for the breakout performance of Renee Zellweger, our laments that we can no longer root for Cuba Gooding, Jr., and our surprise that Jonathan Lipnicki's precocious child performance still holds up, 23 years later. We also bridge a gap into the nearly-real world of, "What would Jerry Maguire look like if Tom Hanks was in the lead role?" and try to imagine a Hanks/Winona version of this movie.
Fri, 13 Sep 2019 - 20 - 018 Mission: Impossible (1996)
Your mission, should you choose/decide to accept it, is to listen to this episode of #CruiseClub about Mission: Impossible. In this episode, we officially (and sort of unknowingly) enter Phase II of #CruiseClub! While Tom Cruise had already been in major movies, his emergence as Ethan Hunt elevates him to another level in his career. In this episode, we welcome in Mike Flynn to discuss the film, Brian De Palma's influences on the franchise, and where we go from here. As always, should you be caught or killed, both of us will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This podcast will self-destruct in five/ten seconds. Good luck.
Fri, 30 Aug 2019 - 19 - 017 Interview with the Vampire (1994)
Tom Cruise goes full horror as he becomes immortal and complains about Brad Pitt’s whining in Interview with the Vampire! Nick Jenkins of Reel Bad and Darcy DuBose of KeanuClub (no relation, kind of) stop by to talk about the theatricality of Cruise as Lestat de Lioncourt, Kirsten Dunst acting far beyond her years, and whether or not Brad Pitt and Christian Slater were the best choices for their roles. But trouble abounds as one of the four doesn’t like this movie. Will the group be able to convince this mysterious defector to like the movie, or will their efforts come up in vain? Tom Cruise is undeniably great in this movie, but should Interview with the Vampire be considered one of his best movies? Listen now and find out!
Fri, 16 Aug 2019 - 18 - 016 The Firm (1993)
If it didn't immediately follow A Few Good Men, seeing Tom Cruise as a lawyer in The Firm may have been a revelation. Instead... it's a bit of a mixed bag. But, importantly, a mixed bag we all mostly like! Joining us to talk about a pre-make of The Devil’s Advocate (minus the supernatural elements) is Tobin Addington of The Contenders. We discuss the film's wildly overlong runtime, how it could have been cut down, and how it differs from the John Grisham novel. (Can you believe it took nearly 1,200 episodes on this network for us to cover a Grisham adaptation?!) We also talk about whether or not the plot twists were obvious, Tom Cruise’s many incredibly athletic feats in this movie, and the greatest office duo of all-time: Gary Busey and Holly Hunter.
Fri, 02 Aug 2019 - 17 - 015 A Few Good Men (1992)
You want the truth? You can’t handle how good this movie is! #CruiseClub keeps on churning out one hit after another. This time: A Few Good Men. We’re heading down to Guantanamo Bay to begin our investigation — and pick up Tobin Addington of The Contenders along the way — then heading back north, grabbing our thinking bats, and diving deep into the world of Navy lawyering.
Fri, 19 Jul 2019 - 16 - 014 Far and Away (1992)
It’s a testament to the incredibly deep filmography of Tom Cruise that Far and Away is as great as it is, and yet no one talks about it among Cruise’s best films! Looking down the barrel of a nearly 2.5 hour Irish epic may be intimidating, but #CruiseClub hasn’t let us down so far, and this is no exception. Joining us on this episode is Michael Domanico, the host of the Not Her Again podcast. We discuss whether or not the central love story (as portrayed by the newly-married Cruise and Nicole Kidman) works, the surprising — and very welcomed — humor of a movie like this, and what the ideal tactics for a land grab would be.
Fri, 05 Jul 2019 - 15 - 013 Days of Thunder (1990)
Don’t you dare call Days of Thunder “Top Gun on the ground.” It’s so much more than that! Crack open your Mello Yello and join us in Victory Circle. In this episode, we welcome back Greg MacLennan of the Alamo Drafthouse to talk about a Tom Cruise movie he loves so much that he bought a 70mm print to screen at a Cruise Control marathon. We discuss the similarities (and differences) between this movie and Top Gun, long for the days where we can do some good old-fashioned wheelchair racing, and celebrate our first (of three) Cruise/Kidman on-screen pairings. We also talk about the Scott Brothers’ (and Hans Zimmer’s) absolute domination of the 1990s, and lament that Tony Scott never got to direct Tom Cruise in a Mission: Impossible movie.
Fri, 21 Jun 2019 - 14 - 012 Born on the Fourth of July (1989)
The hits keep on coming! Born on the Fourth of July is an important marker in the history of #CruiseClub as it represents Tom Cruise's first Academy Award nomination, and joining us to talk about this movie is Jeremy Kelly. In this episode, we discuss the studio's hesitation to cast Cruise -- and why they shouldn't have worried -- as well as Tom Cruise's first true dramatic role, the similarities and differences between this movie and Top Gun, and baby Kyra Sedgwick. We also throw heaps of #CruiseClub award nominations this film's way and look ahead to Cruise's next Academy Award nomination, which is once again for a movie about the Marines. (We're starting to sense a pattern here.) #HANX for the Memories may be picking up steam, but #CruiseClub is firing on all cylinders!
Fri, 07 Jun 2019 - 12 - 011 Rain Man (1988)
Rain Man represents a pretty wild departure from the roles Tom Cruise has taken so far in his career, but we’re not complaining! Joining us to talk about the Cruise role that Michael Caine says is one of his all-time favorite is Jordan Polan-Clarke of Wistful Thinking, who is sparkly and looks like a holiday. In this episode, we talk about Valeria Golino’s ties to Las Vegas, Princess Diana, and whether or not Tom Cruise was snubbed by the Academy.
Fri, 24 May 2019 - 11 - 010 Cocktail (1988)
Cocktail, winner of the Razzy Award for Worst Picture, has been called Tom Cruise’s worst movie of all-time. But is it really that bad? Joining us to answer that question are Kyle Reinfried of Foodie Films and Austin Wolf-Sothern of Cinema Stories on YouTube. In this episode, we discuss the highs and lows of Cocktail, admire the way Elisabeth Shue turns an absolute zero of a role into one that’s endearing, and wonder which other 80s heartthrobs — if any — could have played Tom Cruise’s role.
Fri, 10 May 2019 - 10 - 009 The Color of Money (1986)
After a series of movies starring Tom Cruise, The Color of Money puts him in the co-pilot’s chair as he cedes the spotlight to Paul Newman. Or does he? The Color of Money masterfully tells the story of two grifters, hustlers, and pool sharks, and we’re joined by Greg MacLennan to gush all about it. In this episode, we admire Tom Cruise’s samurai dance moves — along with his VINCE t-shirt — and wonder who’s really been conning who in this story. We also discuss past “Cruise Control” events at the Alamo Drafthouse, wonder if Tom Hanks could ever fit into this movie, and realize there may be a divide happening (already) between our two lead actors in the TomTom Club. Wondering what you can find in this episode? You already know the answer: “Doom.”
Fri, 26 Apr 2019 - 9 - 008 Top Gun (1986)
We've got the need... the need to podcast about the Academy Award-winning film Top Gun! Joining us to take down these bogeys is our resident action film expert, Dan "The Duke" Hayden. Our egos are writing checks that our bodies can't cash. In this episode, we talk about the timeless cool of Tom Cruise as Maverick, how this movie is pure propaganda (and we don't care), and this movie's version of the Mission: Impossible face-swap technology. This episode could be complicated... but you can be our wingman anytime.
Fri, 12 Apr 2019 - 8 - 007 Legend (1985)
Legend is, by far, the weirdest movie that stars Tom Cruise so far in his career, and may be the weirdest movie he’s ever done. But is it any good? To make sense of this fabulous world (and its many, many acting choices), we brought in Darcy DuBose and Jess “MonTEZ” Collins. Legend is Jess’s favorite movie of all time — and one of Darcy’s ten or so favorites — so the big question Joey wants to ask is: why? Can Jess, Darcy, and Mike convince Joey that this is a good movie? Is his brain broken? Find out!
Fri, 29 Mar 2019 - 7 - 006 All the Right Moves (1983)
While we don’t have our resident Yinzer on the podcast to talk about the set-in-Pittsburgh film All the Right Moves, we’ve welcomed in our resident high school expert to talk about Tom Cruise as a defensive back on his high school football team. Brian Rodriguez of High School Slumber Party drops by again as we discuss the realism of the football action, Lea Thompson’s greatest acting moment, and whether or not the ending was too cliche. We also talk about yet another Tom Cruise movie with a killer soundtrack, the difficulties he had when trying to fit in as a high school student, and whether or not his character seems like he’s Serbian. (Spoiler alert: it turns out we have no idea.) Join us as we get into a fight with head coach Craig T. Nelson on this episode of #CruiseClub!
Fri, 15 Mar 2019 - 6 - 005 Risky Business (1983)
Risky Business is Tom Cruise’s first Very Important Movie in his career, so we had to bring in some big names to talk about it! We’ve got Brian Rodriguez (host of High School Slumber Party) and Walt Hickey (of Numlock News) sliding into frame in their underwear, button down shirt, and Wayfarers. In this episode, we talk about Tom Cruise’s baby fat, Rebecca de Mornay’s charm, and Joey Pants’s smarm, while coming to the realization that this is the ultimate Reagan-era movie in just about every way.
Fri, 01 Mar 2019 - 5 - 004 Losin' It (1983)
Losin’ It marks Tom Cruise’s first starring role… and also his worst movie to date. While it’s not a terrible movie, it’s a bit of a mess and doesn’t know whether it wants to be a sex comedy or an emotional, heartfelt drama. To help us make sense of Losin’ It, we’re joined by Christian Larson, the co-host of Monkey Club. We’re packing our bags, robbing a nearby convenience store, and heading down to Tijuana to buy fireworks, get laid, and talk about the best and the worst of Tom Cruise’s performance. We also imagine what Tom Hanks would be like in this role (Could he ever play a character named Woody? Only time will tell!) and find out Larson’s earliest memories of Tom Cruise. Plus, we launch a new game to try to make sense of the next movie on our docket!
Fri, 15 Feb 2019 - 4 - 003 The Outsiders (1983)
The Outsiders marks Tom Cruise's final supporting role for more than 15 years, which both fits right in line with our two movies so far and sets up an exciting future ahead! In this episode, we welcome in Aislinn Addington of The Contenders to discuss Cruise's character, his teeth, and his ravenous love of chocolate cake. We also wonder what this movie would have been like with Tom Hanks in it, and look ahead to the very near future where Tom Cruise is the leading man in every movie we watch!
Fri, 01 Feb 2019 - 3 - 002 Taps (1981)
#CruiseClub keeps on trucking with Taps, Tom Cruise's second role. While he's not yet the lead, he's once again a crucial (and manic!) part of the plot, and he can be found in far more of the movie than his 48 seconds of glory in Endless Love. Join us as we watch Cruise transform from a rigid military man (military boy?) to one entrenched in a war that means more to him than anyone else around him. It's the second movie in a row where he's a spark plug and the most watchable part of the movie... we're off to a great start here on the show!
Fri, 18 Jan 2019 - 2 - 001 Endless Love (1981)
While Tom Cruise pops up in just one short scene of (the very problematic) Endless Love, it's hard not to admire this movie for the sweet, sweet trash that it is. The sexual tension is in the air on this inaugural episode of #CruiseClub as Joey and Mike discuss Tom Cruise's first role, the uncomfortable age disparity between our two leads, and the palpable sexual tension in the air throughout this movie. Will they settle on a new phrase to be the #CruiseClub equivalent of "compromising"? Listen and find out!
Fri, 04 Jan 2019 - 1 - Introducing #CruiseClub!
Joey and Mike have covered the ups and downs of the careers of Nicolas Cage, Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron, and more. Then, they had an epiphany: why not watch good movies? In January 2019, they'll start watching every Tom Cruise movie, whose hits far outweigh his misses. Join them! The first episode drops January 4, 2019!
