Thu, 30 Mar 2023 - 1h 22min - 343 - Could Exercise Decrease Immune System Function & Increase Infection Risk? · Research Roundup
Multiple studies have shown that moderate exercise is beneficial for the immune system, especially for the elderly and those with chronic diseases. This is a fairly common and widely-accepted understanding.
However, there is another school of thought warning that too much exercise can actually decrease immune system function and increase risk of infections.
In a time where many of us are looking to boost our immune system, could too much (i.e. strenuous) exercise actually be doing more harm than good?
Dr. Latt Mansor (Research Lead at H.V.M.N.) dives into a recent paper that explores this very question, in which two groups of scientists debate the impact of exercise has on immunity.

Sun, 17 May 2020 - 16min - 342 - Keto / Low-Carb Diets & Ketone Esters REVERSE Brain Aging...But Glucose Accelerates It · Research Roundup
Brain aging is inevitable, but not uniform; every brain ages differently. Are there lifestyle and nutritional interventions we can follow to reduce the rate of decline?
A recent study found that those who followed a ketogenic and low-carb diet did indeed see positive results that we can attribute to preventing (perhaps even reversing) cognitive decline as they age. Fascinatingly, even those who followed a standard American diet found that simply ingesting an exogenous ketone ester (H.V.M.N. Ketone Ester) resulted in similar, positive neurological effects.
This study, led by Lilianne R. Mujica-Parodi, PhD, and published in PNAS, is titled "Diet modulates brain network stability, a biomarker for brain aging, in young adults". When interviewed about her findings, she is quoted:
"...as people get older, their brains start to lose the ability to metabolize glucose efficiently, causing neurons to slowly starve, and brain networks to destabilize. Thus, we tested whether giving the brain a more efficient fuel source, in the form of ketones, either by following a low-carb diet or drinking ketone supplements, could provide the brain with greater energy. Even in younger individuals, this added energy further stabilized brain networks.”
In this episode of Research Roundup: Dr. Latt Mansor, H.V.M.N. Research Lead, walks us through the methods, results, and analyses formulated from these experiments.

Tue, 14 Apr 2020 - 11min - 341 - 3 Tips for Staying Sane AND Improving Productivity During Quarantine · Geoff Talk
In recent months, uncertainty has been at the forefront of many of our minds.
With the rapid developments regarding the ongoing COVID-19 virus and global lockdowns, it's only natural to feel uneasy and anxious about the current situation.
While much of this is out of our own control, Geoffrey Woo strongly advises that we'd be remiss to not take this time to take a step back and improve ourselves.
Of course, we must do our part to "flatten the curve" for the greater good, but we can also make our individual curves in self-development continue to move up in a positive direction.
1. Establish, transition, and commit to new routines.
2. Remain physically isolated, but not socially isolated.
3. Be proactive when possible, not reactive.
p.s. Wash your hands :)

For Dr. Latt Mansor (our H.V.M.N. Research Lead), diabetes is a topic that hits close to home for him. His PhD thesis work from the University of Oxford focused on diabetes and cardiovascular risk.
Typically, Type 2 diabetes gradually develops through a poor lifestyle largely driven by nutrition and a sedentary lifestyle. Dr. Mansor breaks down exactly why one should seriously take into consideration their intake of carbohydrates, incorporate healthy movement-based routines, and regularly monitor your own body to minimize your risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.

Tue, 11 Feb 2020 - 10min - 338 - How NOT to Catch the "Keto Flu" - Why It Happens & How To Avoid It · Dr. Latt Mansor
Headaches, heart palpitations, cramps, fatigue, mood swings, brain fog, nausea...these are some of the issues people trying out the ketogenic diet for the first time could experience.
How and why does the infamous "keto flu" happen?
Many don't experience it all, some can power through in just a few days...while some studies show that the keto flu can persist for 14 days.
With all the positive benefits driven from the keto diet, why must some deal with these negative side-effects? We've even experienced a few of them firsthand.
Perhaps, from the wise words of Spiderman 's Uncle Ben: "With a great diet comes great responsibilities."
The main causes include:
The natural metabolic shift from glucose to fatty acids. Inefficiency in metabolizing fat during the adaptation period, leaving you feeling lethargic. Electrolyte and water loss. Hormonal responses to the shift in metabolism.Keep in mind that keto flu is not a traditional "flu", rather the symptom caused by the changes happening in your body as you go through the diet.
Dr. Latt Mansor, H.V.M.N. Research Lead, explains these causes and what you can do to make your transition to the keto lifestyle much easier. If you understand the mechanisms behind those less-than-deal moment of keto flu, you'll be in a much better position to solve it and go on your merry, ketosis-fueled day.

Tue, 08 Oct 2019 - 07min - 335 - Dr. Jason Fung's Tips for Reducing Hunger Pains During Intermittent Fasting · #61 Clip
When it comes to intermittent fasting, the most common question from beginners who struggle with the hunger is: “What can you drink during your fast?"
A fasting purist would answer with nothing but water. A more relaxed faster may point you to a cup of black coffee, tea, or bone broth.
Let's face it: Intermittent fasting can be tough...especially for a newbie!
What can one drink to help get them through a fast without "breaking" it?
In this podcast clip, Dr. Jason Fung details why he believes green tea & ketone esters could be an effective "fasting" hack.

Thu, 29 Aug 2019 - 12min - 331 - Ketone Esters in the Tour de France: A Metabolic Advantage ft. Professor Kieran Clarke
One particular dramatic point in the 2019 Tour de France was the emergence, public confirmation, and the subsequent controversy around the use of ketone esters.
Team Jumbo-Visma sparked everything off when they publicly came out to discuss the incorporation of ketone esters in their nutritional strategy. Deceuninck-Quickstep and Lotto-Soudal quickly followed suit.
Are ketone esters an unfair advantage? Or is this simply the next generation of sporting and performance food?
Let's break this down together, as there has been somewhat of a controversy with all this media attention. The co-inventor of ketone ester herself, Kieran Clarke, will also be adding color to the discussion.

Mon, 05 Aug 2019 - 14min - 330 - JUUL Gets Banned, Pentagon Eyes Keto Diet, & Metformin's Effect on Exercise · Geoff Talk #2
Earlier this week, San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to ban e-cigarettes in San Francisco. It will be the first city to do so.
In the game of "which one is unlike the others," it's really not obvious that amongst alcohol, chewing tobacco, marijuana, tobacco cigarettes, and e-cigarettes, that you'd pick e-cigarettes as the one with the highest danger and harm potential.
A blanket vape ban feels like a rash, politicized, and overly emotional policy making...and I'll be explaining why.
I also talk about the recent comments by the Pentagon eyeing the ketogenic diet, and the negative effects the popular anti-aging drug metformin has on exercise.

Tue, 11 Jun 2019 - 08min - 327 - Ketone Esters Prevent Overtraining · Research Roundup
One of the greatest challenges of training is successfully attaining "functional overreaching". Pushing your maximal capacity results in stress that leads to beneficial adaptations...making your body stronger, faster, & better.
What happens when you do it wrong? Aptly named, "non-functional overreaching" occurs.
Nothing will help besides rest and recovery. In the case of "overtraining", the more serious form of overreaching, it might take months for even the most elite athletes to bounce back.
A recent study found promising signs that ketone esters can alleviate overreaching symptoms. The researchers didn’t necessarily look at how ketones acutely influence exercise performance, but rather how consistent supplementation could affect recovery and training capacity.
The lead researcher, Professor Peter Hespel, described the potential effect of ketones in recovery as “unseen” and “many times greater” than what he’s seen with other nutritional supplements.
Geoffrey Woo breaks this study down, analyzes the experiment structure, and digs deep into the findings for every last nugget of applicable information.

Tue, 07 May 2019 - 06min - 325 - Eat a High-Fat, Low-Carb Breakfast to Stabilize Blood Sugar Levels THROUGHOUT the Entire Day || Research Roundup
The broad field of nutrition and health is rife with myths, misconceptions and frequently posed yet seemingly fundamental questions that we intuitively feel should have simple answers. Is a calorie a calorie? Is obesity due to eating too much or doing too little?
Is breakfast actually the most important meal of the day?
When looking through the lens of insulin resistance, breakfast has often been seen as a "problem" meal that leads to the largest blood sugar spikes...especially for Type 2 diabetics. This is largely due to the typical "healthy" Western breakfast foods that are high in carbohydrates: Cereal, oatmeal, toast and fruit.
A recent study aimed to explore if eating a low-carb and high-fat meal first thing in the morning is a simple way to prevent this large insulin spike, improve glycemic control throughout the day, and reduce other diabetes complications.
This is the paper Dr. Brianna Stubbs will be diving into in this episode of the Research Roundup.

Wed, 01 May 2019 - 12min - 324 - New Study Claims Ketones INCREASE Inflammation - Why the Results Are Misleading || Research Roundup
Wait...hasn't ketones been shown to reduce inflammation in prior studies?
When a new study researched the effects ketones have on inflammation, the results were opposite to what everyone expected...including the researchers themselves.
The paper was published in the Journal of Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, and the research group that carried out the work were led by Dr Jonathan Little at the University of British Columbia.
Rather than inhibiting the inflammatory response through BHB’s (a ketone body) actions on the NLRP3 inflammasome, the researchers found that activity of several immune markers was higher when people had consumed ketones.
It can be easy to jump to conclusions and state that "Exogenous Ketones = Increased Inflammation"...as the title of the paper acutely suggests.
Dr. Brianna Stubbs tackles this study and provides further, necessary nuance on how the experiment was conducted, why the results may actually be more positive than negative, and why this development warrants future research.

Mon, 15 Apr 2019 - 08min - 323 - No...Eggs WON'T Cause Heart Disease, High Cholesterol, or Death || Research Roundup
On this Research Roundup, Dr. Brianna Stubbs discusses the culprit behind a news story that generated a health controversy recently.
What do you think the media touted as the next food ready to knock years off your life? This time it’s not cakes and soda, it's not red meat, it's not alcohol...it’s the humble egg.
Dr. Brianna Stubbs unpacks the study behind the batch of fear-mongering headlines. The study in question was published in a well respected journal called JAMA. The study is titled: Associations of Dietary Cholesterol or Egg Consumption With Incident Cardiovascular Disease and Mortality.
After discussing the controversial JAMA study, Dr. Brianna references two additional papers to help paint a more balanced picture around egg consumption:
- Egg consumption and risk of coronary heart disease and stroke: dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies. Eggs enriched in omega-3 fatty acids and alterations in lipid concentrations in plasma and lipoproteins and in blood pressure.

Mon, 01 Apr 2019 - 15min - 322 - Reduce Inflammation: Why the Ketogenic Diet and Exogenous Ketones Are Key || Research Roundup
Welcome to the HVMN Research Round Up, hosted by Dr. Brianna Stubbs. Today, we’ll be going down one of Brianna's personal favorite rabbit holes: The way that ketones from the ketogenic diet and exogenous ketone affect inflammation.
Is the ketogenic diet as a whole responsible for the reduction of inflammation? Or is it the specific ketone body BHB (beta hydroxybutyrate) that has the most impact? This is a major question that Brianna brings up and explores in this episode.
We’ll go through three studies on this topic, where Brianna will walk you through the research process, discuss and analyze the results, and muse over the potential implications.

HVMN's Geoffrey Woo (CEO) & Dr. Brianna Stubbs (Research Lead) watch respond to a recent video posted by Marc Lobliner (Tiger Fitness). The video was titled "Intermittent Fasting is a HOAX - Studies Are In!".
Obviously, we had some thoughts on Tiger Fitness' aggressive statements. Intermittent fasting is not an end all be all that will work perfectly for everyone, but the body of evidence supporting the positive outcomes of fasting is extensive. We break down why intermittent fasting is NOT a hoax.

"Cholesterol just became a little more complicated. We challenge traditional cholesterol guidelines with Dave Feldman, who has years of rigorous self-experiments surrounding low-carb and ketogenic diets. This is a fatty episode that you won't want to miss!"
In our eyes, the post was not making bold claims. We were merely challenging traditional medicinal dogma. Why the censorship?
The rest of the low-carb/keto community seemed to feel the same when we shared the situation. It spurred confusion and outrage that spanned the top of r/ketogains, r/zerocarb, and "nutrition Twitter".

Wed, 13 Feb 2019 - 11min - 319 - 5 Ways Intermittent Fasting Has Helped My Company
Hey everyone, Geoffrey Woo here. I started studying the science behind intermittent fasting in 2015 and experimenting with it. Now in 2019, I've been intermittent fasting for over 3 years and it's been an integral part of my lifestyle. I know many of our long-time subscribers can say the same.
By strategically not eating for set periods of time, fasting has improved my body composition (I'm much more cut), it's trained my mind to intimately understand what it feels like to be truly hungry, and improved my overall mood and focus.
I eat in 4-6 hour eating windows mostly every day, so I fast 18-20 hours every day. Every quarter year, I do longer fasts usually around 3 days. When I did less physical training, I would do regular weekly 36 hour fasts and actually did a 7 day fast.
When I started intermittent fasting in 2015 and started talking publicly about it in 2016, everyone thought I was nuts. Which was not exactly comfortable, because I consider myself a natural skeptic and a trained engineer and scientist. But the data was so good that I felt compelled to share, especially in the world we live in today. 1/3 of Americans are diabetic or prediabetic. So many of us are trying so hard to lose weight, and we've been taught outdated science that just doesn't work.
Could I create a change in culture? Where would I even start?
I would make intermittent fasting a part of my company: HVMN.
Intermittent fasting has benefited HVMN in 5 ways:
1. Discipline 2. Quantitative Approach to Business 3. Shared Camaraderie 4. No Afternoon Slump 5. Changing Culture in the Community

Mon, 06 Mar 2017 - 26min - 312 - #219: Resistance Training to Build a Resilient Body w/ Sal Di Stefano
Sal started as a professional in the fitness industry as a trainer at the age of 18. His passion for fitness, combined with his love of people, quickly propelled him into big box gym management by the time he was 19 years old. During his career in gym management, he grand opened some of the largest gyms in the California Bay Area and was often recognized as a top performer in sales, production, and team leadership, earning him accolades from top industry leaders.
At the age of 24, he left the commercial gym industry to open his own fitness and wellness studio after he became dissatisfied with the big-box gym approach to health and fitness. He wanted to bring a wellness-based well, rounded approach to people. In his small studio facility, he brought in hormone and nutrition specialists, acupuncturists, gut health professionals, and meditative/bodywork providers, along with fitness trainers.
This well-rounded environment formed the voice that Sal is often currently lauded for. It was during his time in his wellness studio that he figured out how to solve the hardest and most persistent problems with fitness, health, and wellness. His approach led to long-term success with his clients, and he developed a behavioral-focused approach toward health and fitness.
After a decade of running his studio, he met Doug Egge, the current producer of Mind Pump, and shortly after, he met Adam Schafer and Justin Andrews. They quickly hit it off due to their different backgrounds but similar approaches to fitness and health, and they decided to start a fitness and health podcast. Mind Pump was launched and quickly became the number-one fitness and health podcast in the world.

What makes Smarter Not Harder Dave's best contribution to the biohacking community, yet: Introducing The Laziness Principle -The Laziness Principle is Dave's new concept that allows readers to understand better how their cell's operating systems work, therefore allowing them to hack their MeatOS more seamlessly

Fri, 14 Oct 2022 - 1h 26min - 287 - #196: Ketone-IQ™ Official Launch
Did you know that our ancestors had better metabolic health than we do today?
It’s no secret: our metabolism is under attack. Caffeine is overstimulating us. Sugar and artificial junk are contributing to insulin spikes, energy crashes, and long-term health problems.
In the past, we used to eat less sugar, move around more, and enjoy the benefits of ketones, an ancient metabolic superfuel. When we’re out of sugar and pushed to our metabolic limits, we create ketones to fuel our brains and bodies.
Ketones take you to a place where everything flows: a calm, gentle, and clean boost of energy without the jitters or sugar crash. Elevated ketone levels are proven to support athletic performance, mental clarity, recovery, and more. And fun fact: ketones produce 28% more energy than sugar alone!
At H.V.M.N., our mission is to use the best of modern technology to help us return to our ancient roots and spend more time fueling with ketones. Because ketones are so promising, the Department of Defense awarded us a $6 million contract to continue our research.
After over a year of hard work, we are proud to introduce you to our latest innovation: Ketone-IQ™️. This new drink quickly elevates your ketone levels, helping you achieve next-level metabolic health and performance.
Each bottle of Ketone-IQ™️ contains 10 servings, designed to be taken daily.
With Ketone-IQ™️, everyone can experience the magic of ketones, whether you need an extra boost for your workout or a little more focus to power your workday. And you can achieve these benefits without fasting or restricting carbs, unlocking ancient energy on demand.
Speaking of demand, Ketone-IQ™️ is a sellout risk—over 30,000 people joined our waitlist! Try Ketone-IQ™️ before it goes out of stock by visiting the H.V.M.N. website. You can also find us at select Sprouts locations in Southern California.

Mon, 01 Feb 2021 - 57min - 261 - Free Fatty Friday #12: Defining "Modern Nutrition"
What should we eat? When and how should we eat it? These are questions that every single generation of humans spanning across hundreds of thousands of years have pondered and debated.
In modern times, it’s arguable that even with all the progression in metabolic biochemistry, physiology, and the culinary arts, we’re further from a practical application of human nutrition than ever. 3/4 of us are overweight or obese,1/3 of us are pre-diabetic or diabetic, and almost 9/10 of us have some form of metabolic syndrome. All the while, we spend more per capita on healthcare than ever. This is an indictment of our modern food system. This is an unacceptable failure.
In this week's Free Fatty Friday, Geoffrey Woo claims and defines the term "modern nutrition." He talks the history, the evolution, the application of nutrition, and how we move humanity forward with an enlightened approach to modern nutrition.
