- 116 - E116 The Biggest Tribute to the Foo Fighters, Projects Gone Viral with Fabio Zaffagnini and Claudia Spading from Rockin' 1000
In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe welcomed Fabio Zaffagnini and Claudia Spadoni from Rockin’ 1000. Fabio and his team are the founders of the global movement and sensation Rockin’ 1000 which brings together 1000 musicians to perform concerts. The first concert for Rockin' 1000 was a viral video calling for the Foo Fighters to play a concert in their small hometown of Cesena, Italy.
Project Management Office Hours is a show about the people and projects in project management from around the world. We’ve talked with people from all the continents discussing war, family, history, projects, careers, neuroscience and so many different topics over 115 shows. Each show was a fantastic experience to listen and learn, but there has been 1 guest PMO Joe has been chasing for years…Fabio and the Rockin’ 1000 team.
If you haven’t seen the video you are missing out and you must join the over 61 million viewers who have experienced the passion, excitement, purpose, and emotions from this call to action - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JozAmXo2bDE&list=RDJozAmXo2bDE
Fabio shares the origin story for the video, “So I live in a very small town in Italy, it's called Cesena, and I'm a Foo Fighters fan. And at some point I really wanted Foo Fighters to come and play in my hometown.” He added, “So in order to convince them, I needed something crazy to make some sort of crazy request. So one day this idea popped out in my mind and I had this feeling that if we put on a sort of tribute to the band, the biggest tribute ever made, probably Dave Grohl would have been convinced to come over and play a gig. So I had this idea of asking 1000 musicians to perform altogether simultaneously in a park, one of their songs that was Learn to Fly. And this idea in the beginning was something that I just had, but as days went by, it turned into sort of obsession, so I could not stop thinking about it.”
Claudia and Fabio tell us their story, how they built the biggest Foo Fighters tribute. Asking the Foo Fighters to play a concert for them in Cesena. How do you bring to life a crazy idea like this? With the help of project management, that's how. How do you get it funded? Where do you find 1000 musicians? How do you coordinate equipment, video, audio, food, and drink for so many people to come together to play just one song? It was over a yearlong project and they were able to pull it off!
At one point in the video Fabio says, “I’ve been working on this fucking project for more than one year, waking up every morning thinking about how to make it real and this is all that we’ve got. One thousand people, one thousand rockers that came from all over the nation at their own expense and they did it for just one song…” How many of you have had that same thought leading your projects? I’ve been working on this project for over a year, and I keep waking up every morning wondering how it is going to all come together.

#projectmanagement...Mon, 06 Feb 2023 - 115 - E115 Moving at LitheSpeed with Sanjiv Augustine
In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe welcomed Sanjiv Augustine, CEO and Founder of LitheSpeed. Sanjiv shared his story and the origins of LitheSpeed. We also hear challenges that organizations are facing and to overcome them. We learn about the Value Management Office, VMO, and how do you go about setting one up.
Sanjiv Augustine is an entrepreneur, industry-leading agile and lean expert, author, speaker, management consultant and trainer. With over 30 years in the industry, Sanjiv has served as a trusted advisor to executives and management at leading firms including: Capital One, The Capital Group, CNBC, Comcast, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, General Dynamics, HCA Healthcare, Huntington Bank, The Motley Fool, National Geographic, Nationwide Insurance, Walmart and Samsung.
Sanjiv shared his insights on 4 keys to move from a PMO to a VMO. You can learn more about these insights by picking up his book, PMO to VMO Managing for Value Delivery. First is to transition from a project model to a product model. Second, moving from large batches to small batches. Sanjiv said, “Now in today's world, because things are moving so much faster, it's much better to say what is the smallest piece of value that I can deliver to my customers as quickly as possible?”
Third, is to track business outcomes or value and not just outputs. Lastly, is to shift from command and control, top-down management to leadership and collaboration. Sanjiv stated, “So, in a nutshell, project to product mindset, change large batch to small batch, tracking outcomes towards value, delivery value, not just outputs. And then transitioning from command and control to leadership collaboration.”

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe welcomed Andrea Clinton and Daniel Zitter. Prior to this discussion we all participated in a Workshop using the Project Management Board game led by Daniel. The discussion included lessons learned during the workshop, the benefits of games for learning, the next generation of PMs, as well as the career transition Andrea recently experienced and how her long project management career helped with the change.
Andrea Clinton is a career project manager and leader. She has dedicated her expansive 25 year career to the craft of project management. She has worked across industries from education to manufacturing, software development to data center design/build, gaining experience at variety of companies from small start-ups to Fortune 5 companies such as Apple.
Daniel Zitter loves project management, and he's happy to tell anyone who will listen! He appreciates the complexities of managing a project. He enjoys discussing it with others and teaching the methodologies, thought processes and how to deal with the questions and challenges that are sure to arise. He is Co-Founder of PM Zone and the Project Management Board game.
If you’re wondering does playing a board game simulate running a project and what can you learn from the game, here is what Andrea had to say, “As we were working through the program, within our gameplay, if you will, you think that you're going to start working on your tasks and you have them all lined up and you're thinking, what could possibly go wrong? I've got this, this is totally easy. And then before you know it, there's a risk thrown up and you have to stop and address that risk or there's a constraint that comes up and then you have to turn around and go backwards or have to try and borrow resources from somewhere else.”
We train our youth with games all the time whether in school, at home, or activities. Gaming helps to break down any barriers which might pop up when you are “supposed to be learning”. The fun and excitement of the gaming workshop allows players, Project Managers, to experience situations and learn together building stronger teams and better situational awareness.

In our discussion we explored what is Citizen Development and why is it important for PMI. In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe welcomed Mayte Mata Sivera. Mayte and Joe also discussed The PMO Leader, Volunteering, PMI and so much more in this fast-moving hour-long discussion.
Mayte is a PMO Director, a PMP certification holder, ScrumAtScale Practitioner and recently she earned the Product Owner Certification. She enjoys public speaking engagements and is a passionate volunteer at PMI and PMI Local Chapters. For six years, she has been a volunteer at TEDxSaltLakeCity. She has more than 15 years of experience leading teams and programs & projects around the world, and her passion is to share her knowledge and nonstop learning from volunteer opportunities.
Mayte discussed her move to the United States and the challenges that can come with an international move, “Yeah, that was a big challenge. I was working with a lot of projects around France and with French speakers, so I realized that I was in a meeting and my English level was very low. And if I really wanted to succeed and if you really want to learn a language.”
We discussed some strategies for working from home in this new remote work world. Mayte shared some of her tips including, “What I did is every six months I changed my office. So if now I have the table looking at the window in the next six months, I change the table like that. I don't get bored to be always in the same place. And like you, I set an alarm. And when I have work that is more reading emails or supporting people. Sometimes I take some calls working around the backyard, other times I answer some emails from the living room.”

#projectmanagement #volunteering #leadershipFri, 23 Sep 2022 - 110 - E110 Making an Impact with Project Management featuring Milan Dordevic
In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe welcomed Milan Dordevic for an in-studio discussion. We get to hear Milan share his story and how he began a career in Project Management spanning many countries and industries. Milan and Joe also discussed Leadership, Certifications, Artificial Intelligence and so much more.
Milan is a certified project management expert and leader, author, speaker, and business and technology mentor for high-tech start-ups. His expertise is in complex & remote project and product management, organizational development, and change, all of which he has gained over the course of 15 years. Through dynamic leadership and vision, he is driving business and product innovation, automatization, digitalization, program efficiency, and scaling agility in the organization.
Milan has made a big impact in his career and when asked about how did he do so much so quickly he shared, “I was never afraid of doing some project or taking the project or jumping into something that I didn't know I was learning by doing. In the meanwhile, every night I was reading about it, I was enrolling myself, currently in parallel with my family.”
When asked about some lessons learned during his experiences Milan shared, “I think the biggest mistake that people, organization do, they read about some methodology, they read about some approach or they hear that one company succeeded because they did it in that way and they want to do the same. So there is one person who succeed. He was doing it the same way and you want to do the same. No, but you are in different industry, you have different products, your story is different. You need to take all those things into consideration and apply to your organization company approach. So you cannot implement. There are probably chances that you will succeed, but there are plenty of approaches, plenty of methodologies, frameworks, and you can select one of them or you can make even better, custom one, select the best from all of them and apply to your organization. Make a custom fit.”

#projectmanagement #pmguru #leadershipWed, 07 Sep 2022 - 109 - E109 Utilizing Research in Project Management with Robert Joslin
In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe welcomed Robert Joslin to the show. We get to hear Robert share his story and learn about the founding of AIPMO. Robert and Joe also discussed global associations, industry research, Agile in PMOs and so much more.
Robert is a Portfolio/project/program management consultant, professor, and engineer. He has 25 plus years in designing, initiating management delivery of business transformation, reengineering, infrastructure, and strategy development including winning national prizes for ideas and product innovation.
Why start AIPMO? “AIPMO stands for the Association of International Project Management Officers. So really the association should be about the individuals rather than the project management office itself. So the O could be officers or office, depending on how you use the term. And the reason I actually set up AIPMO back in 2015 was having worked on projects pretty much all my life and experienced projects, good ones, poor ones, you realize actually in the projects that are poorly run, how it actually impacts individuals.”
What differences do you find with PMOs from different regions around the world? “I actually call Saudi Arabia the Kingdom of PMOs because it has so many structured PMOs run by consulting companies like McKinsey, for example. PwC is big into PMOs. So really Saudi Arabia has maybe surprising to some, it's extremely advanced in the way that PMOs they've actually developed.”

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe welcomed Ruth Bedingfield. Ruth shares her journey working as a PMO Leader and her path to joining KeyedIn supporting customers. Ruth and Joe discuss the importance of listening, how to react when opportunity knocks, and having passion for your work.
Ruth has 15 years of business expertise with 5+ years focused on the Project Management Office. She understands what successful PMOs are doing today to bring value for their businesses tomorrow through working closely with enterprise project management professionals looking to deliver the value outcomes their businesses need. She understands the role of the PMO for today’s evolving businesses and jumps at the opportunity to help PMOs achieve their goals through data-driven insights from powerful project portfolio management software.
Ruth shared how important it is to be adaptive and flexible as a PMO Leader, “So I think I always like in PMO to being on the ocean. Sometimes it's forever changing, but the ground is never stable. Sometimes the waves are small and it's like a mill pond, sometimes it's like a storm and the waves are crashing down around you. But as a PMO, you learn and you adapt to ride those waves. I think agility and adaptability were really key for me to be able to grow in the role of the PMO Officer.”
Many PMOs face the challenge of overcoming the perception of being the Project Management Police. Ruth had great perspective on this, “it was a really interesting journey. When I was able to sort of get hold of the reigns, I was really fortunate to also have the support of some really strong open minded leaders and sponsors as well as PMO that really felt the value. I think that was one key benefit that I certainly benefited from within our organization. But we did a full reset. I said to everybody, just stop, it's not working. We're firefighting, for instance. We're chasing tails, we're not proactively listening. We need to stop. That's exactly what we did. And we went back to basics.”

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe chats with Ricardo Sastre Martin who joined us live from Spain. Ricardo is a leader in our industry with over 16 years experience as a Project Manager, PMO Leader and Consultant. He is also holds the #2 ranking in the Thinkers360 Project Management category.
Ricardo and PMO Joe chatted about having a Growth Mindset, with Ricardo sharing, “the pace of change in the world is so dramatic that if you are not learning continuously you are going to be out of the race because things are changing very fast right now so you have to keep learning.” Ricardo works for Microsoft which promotes the growth mindset, “here at Microsoft we have some time allocated in our daily work or weekly work for training because the company really believes in the need and the power of training and continuous learning.”
Ricardo also shares his perspectives on Artificial Intelligence in Project Management, the Project Economy, and having Purpose with his work. He shared, “So always try to have a purpose, because if you don't have a purpose, you cannot guide where are you going. So you cannot define your goals and you cannot define what are you going to do to achieve those goals. So at the end, you are kind of lost. So we all need to have a purpose mission in our life, not only in our career.”

#projectmanagement #growthmindset #purposedrivenTue, 24 May 2022 - 102 - E102 Project Management Research, Key Findings with Louise Worsley
In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe chats with Louise Worsley. Louise is a consultant, lecturer and coach in the Project Management industry for over 30 years. She shared several stories and experiences with us including key points from years of research conducted for several organizations.
Louise leads the leadership module on the Masters in Project Management at the University of Cape Town and is the author of several books and publications on portfolio and project management, including Stakeholder-led Project Management: Changing the way we manage projects.
Louise and PMO Joe chatted about Leadership, with Louise sharing, “And for me, the currency of leadership is relationships. So I had to build those relationships in the University so that I could run this relatively complex program and build that coalition of support that we needed in order to do this major change program. And I think I personally had to change. I have to now focus not on doing things, but on creating those connections. And I think that for me was when I started to feel, gosh, this is what it means to be a manager. Here's what it means to run projects.”
We also learned quite a bit about the research Louise has conducted over the years. What important findings can we learn from research? Is there a method or process that is more successful than another? She shared, “what we also found is that you could have one person using the same method and another person using the same method. One was incredibly successful, one was incredibly unsuccessful. So what was different about the people? What really mattered? So we went and measured their high performing project managers and looked at them. And I think one of the interesting first, the most important behavioral competence came out. And I've mentioned this before was integrity.”
Louise and PMO Joe continue their discussion about the various research findings and what to look for with successful project management. Be sure to catch all the conversations and listen to the full episode: https://www.thepmosquad.com/podcasts/project-management-office-hours/episodes/2147731511

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe chats with the Chief Innovation Officer of Prosci, Tim Creasey. Tim is a returning guest and while they discuss change management, much of the episode is focused on the future of work and reimagining work in our post-covid world.
Tim Creasey is an author, researcher, and change expert who focuses on the people side of change with process, wit and vigor. Tim’s work forms the foundation of the world’s largest body of knowledge on change management. His role as Chief Innovation Officer at Prosci gives him unparalleled insight into change management challenges, trends and futures.
One of the concepts Tim shared is the mindset of reentry or reimagining the workplace. He said, “even in April 2020, like reentry is you're driving down 15, you get off the highway, get gas, you get back on 15, you reentered the road that you departed from. But the road we were on wasn't going to be there even back in April 2020.” We are now reimagining what work will be like for us.
The concept of gathering has been lost in some respect as we’ve lived in a remote work environment. Tim shared, “Gathering matters. Even though we can do almost anything apart. Gathering matters. And so how are we going to be strategic, intentional, really thoughtful when we are able to share space and make the most of the time, we share space. And let's not default to thinking we have to share space just because that's the way we used to always do things.
Tim and PMO Joe continue their discussion about the future of work, reconnecting, technology and the digital revolution. Be sure to catch all the conversation and listen to the full episode: https://www.thepmosquad.com/podcasts/project-management-office-hours/episodes/2147725443

#gatheringmatters #changemanagement #digitaltransformation #TTWADIThu, 28 Apr 2022 - 100 - E100 Celebrating 100 PMOH Episodes with Asya Watkins and Kim Essendrup
In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe celebrates his 100th show milestone with special guests Asya Watkins and Kim Essendrup!
Making it to the 100th episode of a podcast is a milestone worth celebrating and taking time to reflect on the people and stories shared along the journey. As successful podcast hosts themselves, Asya and Kim also share the lessons they’ve learned, the guests with the biggest impact, the guests who they are chasing, and the communities they’ve built.
Asya is the host of the Women of Project Management podcast and founder of the WoPM community. She started the community because she couldn’t find one that already existed to match what she needed. Asya shared with us, “I know a lot of people when they start businesses, they do the research and who else is out there? And I really couldn't find it or I would have just joined it. And so, I just decided to go ahead and start it. And so now I'm just so grateful that we get to have these beautiful conversations, we get to learn. But it is something also about being able just to see other women that look like you and that are thriving in their careers and that there's no titles, they let down those titles, there's no ego and we share.”
We also reflected on some of our favorite shows and guests. Kim is one of the co-hosts of Project Management Happy Hour with his co-host Kate Anderson. Kim shared one recent show and a discussion they had with Tim Creasey, Chief Innovation Officer at Prosci. He shared, “I have to say, I have a professional man crush on Tim Creasey. It's just brilliant. I just love any conversation we have with him.” He added, “It was really nice talking with him. He had a number of different topics he talked us through when it came to change management. And so many of them were really so profound that I found myself quoting content from the show to my colleagues, to my partners and then at home, which I like what you're talking about, but it just really changed the way I think about change and the way people go through change. It was really profound for me”

As we learn about his story and path into the PMO space he started not within the Project Management field rather an industrial engineering. “After industrial engineering studies, I found myself in the project management space applying those industrial engineering principles—Always be proactive. I am known within the city of Cape Town as an implementer, as a driver, as a continuous enforcer. I'm striving for change. I like change. I'm not waiting for anything because it's just changing your mindset and maximizing those skills in the project management field.” Those early career experiences were setting the stage for a successful Project Management career as he learned the importance of mindset, organization, and management.
Ben shared that he enjoys solving problems and helping others. In Cape town he worked on a project to help citizens impacted with Covid-19. “You sometimes take it for granted, but it's a great contribution that we do in the project management group that we're touching lives. I think that's the reason why I keep on working in this space.” As a government agency it is amazing to see the applications in project management take place and have such an impact on so many lives. In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, Kandis Porter and PMO Joe discussed entrepreneurship in project management and change management space, serving the military, mentorship and much more.
Some of the themes in the show were building your network, along with helping people. Kandis explains that building your network and explaining the passion you have for something helps create deeper connections with someone. “Project management, change management, that leadership development. I think that's one area that I especially enjoy working with people on, because if you don't have support at that leadership level with project management or with change management, it's going to be a lot harder than it has to be or it's not going to be successful.” -Kandis Porter
Kandis Porter is the Founder and Managing Director of Effective Flow Connections (EFC), a management consulting company that helps transform organizations through project management, process improvement, change management, facilitation of key meetings, and training. Kandis also works one-on-one with clients, focusing on Leadership development and growth. EFC enables organizations to do what they do, even better!
Kandis describes the most challenging projects she’s had to face, “I'd say just about any project that involves people is a challenging one. And I say that lightheartedly. That's what makes project management, change management so rewarding as well, because you're making a difference. There's project outcomes and objectives. You're trying to do something. People are everywhere. And if you forget about them, you're not going to succeed with your project.”
Before joining the consulting industry, Kandis proudly served more than seven years in the United States Air Force and is passionate about giving back to veterans and their families.

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, Louise Gardner and PMO Joe discussed the PMO space and how to push the start button, entrepreneurship, strategies that have helped resolve organizational resistance to new PMOs and much more.
Passion goes a long way when you’re thinking about starting your own business. Louise shared how starting her own company has made her feel that she has a purpose. “I dance to work every day. I'm having an awesome time and I've never quite felt like that. There’s lots of positive things to be said about corporate life, but I'm having more fun than I've ever had right now.”
Louise started her PMO career as a Project Controller in the Water industry in the late 90's. Working with topflight engineering companies on large projects, she developed a passion for supporting project teams and creating transparency around project data. After moving to Sydney, Australia in 2004, Louise continued to work with Utilities across water, power, and transport before establishing Pledge Consulting in 2012.
“PMO is such a people centric Department team. It's about giving people a level of comfort that you are there to support them on the journey. And these things that they think can't be done shouldn't be done. Let's just deal with them one step at a time. Evolution, not revolution, is one of my favorite things” -Louise
Driven by passion for creating efficiency, quality and an overarching desire to help organizations get more value from their project controls and project delivery teams. Pledge Consulting’s mission is ‘To help organizations deliver value by doing projects better’.

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, Annmarie Curley and PMO Joe discussed how a top-down and bottom-up approach is necessary to bridge the strategy-execution gap and establish environments where teams can be successful without burning out.
Annmarie shares how teams spend so much of their time reacting and firefighting that they are unable to devote any time to learning new tools or methods to change how they operate. “It becomes a vicious cycle that are nearly impossible to break out of, and results in team members who are stressed, overworked, and overwhelmed.”- Annmarie Curley
One major contributor Annmarie mentioned is the type of chaotic environment, she calls “duct tape leadership” -- the patched-together systems that help teams meet short-term goals, at the cost of long-term stability and sustainability. The antidote to duct tape is intentional leadership-- taking time to establish the conditions your team needs to succeed.
Organizations achieve their mission through projects -- and the work that project teams accomplish is pivotal to the organization’s success. The project manager's ability to lead the team and transformation is a critical element. However executive leaders also have a responsibility to set the stage for the team’s success, and to ensure that the work being executed aligns with the strategic priorities.
“Revisiting the Agile Manifesto led me to think about the Project Leader’s Manifesto. The work that a project leader does isn’t easy - they often are working under duress, and it can sometimes feel like pushing a boulder up a mountain. However, I firmly believe that to be effective, project managers have to lead rather than manage which is why I call the role project leader rather than project manager.” “Organizations achieve their mission through projects -- and the work that project teams accomplish are pivotal to the organization’s success. Project Leader Manifesto focuses on people over process and placing attention on the power skills. ” -Annmarie

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours Art García, Cathy Christian, and Curtis Brown join PMO Joe for an enlightening discussion about veterans, project management, and mentorship.
One of the themes from the show is a helping hand goes a long way. “Communicating, connecting and mentoring; you're building your network and the person you help today may be the person that helps you tomorrow.”- Art García. Mentorship can be one of the most influential parts to a successful military transition. Creating safe outlets for a new professional can make all the difference for them.
A great mentor supplies positive influence, guidance and the direction that the person wants to take. “It's about trying to get people to change their aperture. How can I get this person to open their aperture? Kind of think outside of the box. What are the things that you've done? And when you see the light bulb goes off.” -Curtis Brown
Art, Cathy and Curtis provide great leadership to veteran service organizations such as VPMMA, NOVA Job Outreach, PMI, and Onward to Opportunity. “You don't even recognize what you're doing, how helpful and impactful that is to the folks that you're helping. Because to you, it's just a conversation. It's just a natural thing that you're doing. Then when they come back and tell you what an impact it was, you’re like, oh! I had no idea.” -Cathy Christian

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours Matt Hubbard and Mario H Trentim join Joe Pusz - PMO Joe to have an in-depth discussion about the Citizen Developer program.
Matt Hubbard works to bring citizen development programs to organizations using his 20+ years of operational excellence experience. The core of Matt’s success is his belief that process, technology, and people must be optimized together to achieve a lasting result.
“Generically, citizen development is when you empower business people who are not trained coders to solve business problems through the use of low-code/no-code tools, which are tools that basically assemble apps, instead of coding apps. You are dragging and dropping existing elements to assemble the app.” -Matt Hubbard
Mario Trentim is currently Citizen Developer at PMI.org, founder at TRENTIM.com, and Board Member at PMOGA.world. Mario is and Engineer with +15 years of experience managing global projects and implementing Project Management Offices in Latin America, Europe and the Middle East.
“The development for project managers, is not just to build the finance applications or sales applications, it’s also expanding our boundaries outside technical projects to events, to human resource projects, finance projects, marketing projects, and more. When we think about citizen development, an agilest, business analyst, project manager, PMO manager, will be ten times more effective.” -Mario Trentim

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours Ricardo Vargas joins PMO Joe for an exciting discussion on the topics of Transformation, Crisis Management, Project Economy, passion in work-life balance, and more!
We talk about work-life balance and how we can manage having a life outside of work. The moment we reverse it to say it is a life-work balance is the moment we gain control and passion for what we are doing. Balance will fall into place because we realize what to prioritize. Ricardo talks about this further with Joe and describes “When you think that there is a work life balance, you are in some way saying that when you work, you don't live. So, you need to stop working to start living. And for me, in the end, there is only life. This is my passion component.” -Ricardo
“At the UN, the projects are driven by an extraordinarily keen sense of how you can improve people's lives through rebuilding cities after disaster or war-torn countries. On the other side, the environment is how can you help your client to save money? But in the end, both have the same intention to increase the efficiency of things we want to do.” -Ricardo
Specializing in implementing innovative global initiatives, capital projects and product development, Ricardo has directed dozens of projects across industries and continents, managing more than $20 billion in global initiatives over the past 25 years. Ricardo shares his expertise with millions of professionals around the globe through his “5 Minutes Podcast,” which he’s hosted since 2007. He has written 15 books on numerous topics and his influence on the sector was affirmed when he became the first Latin American to be elected Chairman of the Project Management Institute.

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours Fatimah Abbouchi joins PMO Joe for another fast paced discussion! They discuss the topics of Mental Health and Anxiety, Work Transformations, and Agile in the Australian landscape, even swimming lessons!
“When I realized it was the mindset shift that was holding me back, the fear, the anxiety and the mindset I was able to actually get really good. And I think I've improved to a point, if you throw me in the deep end, I probably could survive. Unlike in high school, where I nearly drowned.” -Fatimah Abbouchi
PMO Joe and Fatimah talk about the capability of the workplace and how covid has transformed the way of working. “It needs to be about the capability that we want to bring in and how we bridge that gap between the agile environment and the non-agile environment.” -Fatima. With 90% of the Agile training being received online and paid for the individual itself, the capacity in the workplace is shifting, forcing us to have a different set of capabilities to deliver value back to the company.
On top of that, increasing productivity and collaboration in a remote world, but how might we do this? “I basically say it's about putting agility into governance, not putting governance into agile.” Fatimah Abbouchi

In this episode we take a deep dive on Strategic Alignment and Portfolio Management with Stuart Easton CEO of Transparent Choice.
Stuart and PMO Joe share several anecdotes from their experiences which highlight the importance of understanding the value and purpose for project selection and strategic alignment. It doesn't work to try to do every project. We do projects to achieve our business goals. The art of strategic alignment is to get the leadership team to own the decision making process and to agree on the overall business goals and portfolio priority.
Stuart provides several tools and techniques to help us improve our ability to prioritize strategic portfolios. One technique used within the Transparent Choice solution is AHP, Analytic Hierarchy Process. The process helps you define and quantify the value you are going to deliver to the organization. How has your life been impacted by a Curve Bender? What is a Curve Bender? What is next for all of us in the Project Management Community impacted by the pandemic? In this episode Jennifer Bridges and David Nour share with us their personal stories and also their experiences as leaders within the community.
Lots of laughs in this episode and fun with Jennifer and David. We laughed about the "Punch it" story with David and Jennifer out riding motorcycles. David shared his immigration story coming to the US from Iran alone as a teen back in the 1980s. Jennifer reminds us all to embrace compassion and think how COVID may be impacting our team and partners.
We also have a great discussion about work-life blending and the value of time and relationships in our lives. We chat about the special relationships we've had in our lives and how they've had an impact on us. David calls these relationships “curve benders,” and in his upcoming book, Curve Benders, he identifies who and where they are, how to find and engage them, and, equally valuable, how you can become a curve bender to impact the lives and livelihoods of others profoundly.
Jennifer shares the origin of PM Next which resulted from common themes and struggles people experienced during the pandemic. The program is a collection from several presenters with great content, insights, and lessons. PM Next is a fantastic example of collaboration effort between industry leaders to learn the new skills and competencies needed to thrive in the current context and take advantage of the changes happening in the world

Are you familiar with Design Thinking? Are you utilizing Design Thinking to run your projects? In this episode we chat with Bruce Gay, Founder of Astrevo to understand the fundamentals and benefits of Design Thinking as well as touching on several other topics.
Bruce is a leader in the PM Industry and is an active community builder. He is a PMI Volunteer with PMI Pittsburgh, leads a Healthcare PMO, teaches part time at Norwich University and started his own firm, Astrevo.

The benefit to using Design Thinking is you get closer to your customer's needs and pain points to help you identify defects earlier in the process which is less expensive than defects found later in the process.

Is your PMO adding value to the organization? How do you know? In this episode we have a fun and informative discussion with Stuart Easton Co-founder of TransparentChoice. We chat about Project Prioritization, Project Success rates, Investment in People, interesting facts about Lord Byron, Stuart's niece's artwork, and we hear a bit about Stuart's career in the US and UK.
Stuart joined us from Cambridge in the UK and hit on some great points. One example to consider, our teams can be great at project execution but if we aren't working the correct projects are we truly adding value to the organization? Do we have Strategic Intent with our portfolio? Are our projects supporting the strategic interests of the organization?
How many of you have 5, 6, 10, or more #1 priorities within your portfolio? Are you truly examining the projects to evaluate importance and impact on the business? Are you having challenges with Resource Management? Perhaps the challenge isn't not enough resource rather there is a lack of focus on which projects which will add value.

What an opportunity to bring together Elise Stevens who started the #celebratingwomeninprojectmanagement movement with Lynda Stanton and Kornelia Homewood who were featured in the initiative this year. We love each episode and all our guests, but this one was special. It was a raw and emotional, an open discussion about something which has been left unattended for too long.
In our evolving world today, it is vitally important to discuss topics which may have been off-limits just a few years ago. Listen to Elise share why she started the initiative and also how it has taken off in just a couple of years time.
Unlike any of our previous shows, we didn't discuss PM skills, trends, or techniques. This episode hit at the heart of the most valuable resources in our profession, our people. It was moving to hear Kornelia share her personal story and how she draws strength from Elise and other women within our industry. Much of our hour-long conversation was focused on the future of project management and learning from our collective experiences. Dr. Kerzner and Belinda both highlighted how Project Managers and the role they perform are evolving. We no longer focus our metrics on just the Triple Constraint. We utilize Frameworks rather than Methodology. We have re-defined project success. Our training techniques and tools are changing to meet these new expectations. We discuss differences in project management in the US compared to abroad and challenges with teaching project management at higher educational institutions.
Belinda speaks in detail about the A.C.I.D. Approach; Agility, Change, Innovation, and Disruption. Using this Approach, project managers are more prepared and skilled to lead organizations through growth by running programs and projects critical to overall organizational success. She also shares how Project Management Training has become more behavioral and less technical which provides project managers with essential tools to become successful. Belinda also shares her own story as a young woman starting in a male dominated field, how that has changed and the role that has played in her life with her daughters.
Innovation and Project Management are two terms not often associated. As a leader in our field, Dr. Kerzner is examining innovation in project management through understanding our past as well as understanding the future needs of our organizations and customers. He shares stories of working at the beginning of modern project management and the impetus and limitations of Earned Value, also his personal experiences with his daughter as a project manager facing challenges leading IILlogoUSpnginternational projects.
