Despite evidence that the area around where she was found had been used for target practice, no one ever came forward to claim responsibility and to this day, no one knows whether it was accident or malicious intent, which saw Ruth's life cut short.

Despite anniversary appeals and continued media interest in Karen’s case, there have been few suspects and police have remained unable to answer the question: who would want to kill a woman with no known enemies?

On the 27th of August 1974 a gruesome discovery was made not far from the small Norfolk village of Cockley Cley. Hidden under a light brown plastic dust cover which bore the marking NCR, there lay the body of a woman. Her arms were tied behind her back, her legs bent at the knee, but worst of all, her head had been sawn off and was nowhere to be found. On the evening of Sunday the 24th of January 1993, 7 year old Stacey Queripel reportedly slipped out of the home she shared with her mother and young sister in the town of Bracknell in Berkshire. Three hours later she was discovered in nearby woodland where she had been strangled with her own necklace. On Wednesday 16th October, 1985, 63 year old Cyril Martin, a coma patient, died 7 weeks after being brutally attacked while he slept in an abandoned hut in Maidenhead, Berkshire. While news coverage of Cyril’s death revealed little in the way of clues as to whom might have killed him, a deeper look revealed a long forgotten tragedy. On the 12th of June 1982, 50 year old Brenda Haines was found unresponsive in a bath at her home on Longleat Gardens in Maidenhead. By May of the following year, her husband, Michael, was on trial for her murder. In April of 1967, no sooner had the dust settled on the failed investigation into Yolande Waddington’s murder when the village of Beenham would be stunned by two more killings, when nine year olds Jeanette Wigmore and Jacqueline Williams were found dead in a disused gravel pit. This time though, one suspect would stand out from the rest and for this crime at least, someone would be charged with murder. On October 28th 1966, the small village of Beenham in Berkshire was rocked by the murder of 17 year old au pair Yolande Waddington. The following investigation saw the pioneering use of mass blood testing, intended on identifying whether or not the killer was someone local to the village. With the community fearful for their safety, the blood of over 200 men was taken over a two day stretch. In the late afternoon of Saturday the 3rd of May 2003 in the town of Great Yarmouth, seven year old Daniel Entwistle disappeared near his home on Copperfield Avenue. His red BMX bike was found the next day in an industrial area next to the River Yare but no trace of Daniel, either in or out of the water, has ever been found. Sadly, Daniel, who has been described as mischievous and inquisitive, is all but forgotten when it comes to discussions of long term missing children. On the 3rd of January 1961 the body of twenty year old Jean Constable was found in a ditch near the village of Ridgewell in the heart of Essex. The subsequent investigation quickly led police to the man responsible for Jean's murder. A man who confessed to the killing, even telling the court how he washed her body, burned her possessions and cut off her hair before leaving her by the side of a layby on the A604. On Sunday the 9th of December 1984, 24 year old Peter Miller was found stabbed to death on the kitchen floor of the home he shared with his brother Tony, and Tony’s wife Paula at 10 Camden Place, Great Yarmouth. At 8:20pm on the evening of Thursday 28th March 2002, 22 year old Michelle Bettles was captured on CCTV as she walked down St Benedict’s Street in Norwich in the direction of the red light district. Three days later on the morning of Sunday 31st March her body would be discovered by a dog walker 20 miles outside of the city in a rural area of Norfolk. Today’s episode takes a slightly different format as I look into two unsolved disappearances in East Anglia. The first is the case of 26 year old Amanda (Mandy) Duncan who vanished from Portman’s Walk in Ipswich, part of the area’s red light district on Friday 2nd of July 1993. Second is that of 28 year old Kellie Pratt, who went missing 7 years later, on Sunday 11th of June 2000, this time from the red light district in Norwich. In the early hours of Friday November 20th 1992 the body of sixteen year old Natalie Pearman was discovered in a layby at Ringland Hills on the outskirts of Norwich in Norfolk. Natalie, who had been working in the city’s red light district on the night she was murdered had been strangled and left half dressed by the side of a remote road. Police investigation revealed the presence of a full DNA sample from a man, probably Natalie’s killer, who still remains unidentified almost 30 years later. On the 26th of December 1992, the body of 14 year old Johanna Young from Watton in Norfolk was found face down in a secluded, water filled marlpit on the edge of town. Despite the high profile nature of the investigation and the uncomfortable spotlight it threw on the local community, the person or persons responsible for Johanna’s death remain free to this day. Late in the evening of the 30th of August 1974, 22 year old Pamela Exall, a visitor to Diglea Campsite in Norfolk decided to take an evening walk along nearby Snettisham beach. She bid her companions goodbye and stepped out alone into the moonlit night, never to be seen again. Yvette Watson was just 17 years old when she apparently walked out of the David Rice Hospital near Norwich, Norfolk where she was being treated for depression. It was the 30th of March 1979 and Yvette was just days away from returning to her family home. At first her parents assumed she would contact- she always had before. On June the 2nd 1967, 52 year old solicitor Herbert Wilkinson left his home in the Cheshire town of Middlewich. Four months later his body would be discovered half buried on the banks of the Trent and Mersey Canal, three miles from his home. In the early hours of September the 19th 1999 seventeen year old Vicky Hall and her friend Gemma parted ways on the High Road of their village, Trimley St Mary in rural Suffolk. They had been out for an evening of dancing at a nearby club and when they separated Vicky was only a three minute walk from her family home. She never made that journey. It was just under a week before her body was found 25 miles away in a secluded ditch near the tiny village of Creeting St Peter. This year marks the 20th anniversary of her murder and the case remains unsolved. On the 2nd of February 1989 at around 7:15 in the evening, 31 year old Jeanette Kempton from Brixton in London left The Loughborough Hotel where she had been drinking with friends. She was never seen alive again. Just over two weeks later her body was discovered 118 miles away in a ditch beside a remote road in Suffolk. It was the 1st of September 1979 when 25 year old teacher and PhD student Alison Morris decided to go for a short after dinner walk to the River Stour not far from her parents home in Ramsey, Essex. She made it no more than 70 yards down a small country path when she was approached from behind and savagely stabbed to death. There were no witnesses, no clues and no murder weapon and 39 years later, Alison's death still remains unsolved. On July the 11th 1979, 22 year old Sally Ann McGrath went missing from Peterborough city centre at around 2:45 in the afternoon. Initially police assumed her a runaway but 8 months later her body was found partially buried in a shallow grave in Castor Hanglands Nature Reserve, just a few miles away from where she was last seen. For the next 30 years Sally’s murder remained unsolved. On September the 11th 1983, solicitor Janice Weston was murdered in a lonely lay-by on the side of the A1 in Cambridgeshire. Killed 70 miles away from her home in affluent Notting Hill in London, Janice had been beaten about the head with a car jack. As police investigated her death, they discovered a baffling timeline of events and unusual occurrences that continue to confuse even to this day. On December 30th 1957, 17 year old Anne Noblett failed to return to her home in Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire after attending dance classes in the nearby town of Harpenden. 32 days later her neatly clothed body was discovered in Rose Grove Woods, 7 miles away from where she was last seen. Unusually, when she was found, her body was in a relatively early stage of decomposition despite the fact that she had been killed on the day she went missing. On the afternoon of September 7th 1956 Diana Suttey spent a while in the Crow's Nest Cafe near Markyate in Hertfordshire. She drank a cup of tea, played on the jukebox and then hitched a lift just a few miles down the A5 to a nearby lay-by. 30 minutes and 10 witnesses later, her strangled body would be found under a bush just a few short miles away near Leverstock Green. On Valentines Day 1976, according to her husband, 31 year old Helen Hooper walked out of her rural home in Broken Green, Hertfordshire to go early morning shopping. She hasn't been seen or heard from since and her body has never been found. On October 29th 1974 at 6:15 pm, 39 year old wife and mother of three Josephine Backshall from Maldon in Essex left her home to meet with an unknown photographer. Josephine had met him via a newspaper ad for part time work that she'd placed in the Maldon and Burnham Standard that February. The advert read Lady, late thirties, seeks part time employment. Own transport. Anything considered. Previous experience: banking. Able to type. And then her phone number. Three days later her body was found face down in a shallow pond near the village of Bury Green in Hertfordshire. Her hands were bound forwards and wrapped around her neck was the cord with which she had been strangled.
