Bullitt, TwoNav, PSMA map cards and Andy's top tips
In this month’s podcast
1. What is going on at Bullitt, the creator of the Motorola Defy – satellite link? - 2 min 31 sec
2. TwoNav – a breath of fresh air – quick update - 13 min 15 sec
3. Mountain rescue teams - PSGA map cards - Garmin - 26 min 33 sec
4. Andy’s top tips - 30.08
1. Bullitt – maker of the Motorola Defy Satellite Link
In late January filed for bankruptcy
Founders were paying for service to continue for 1 month
We are over that time period and everything is still working
19th February - Sky News understands that Exponent Private Equity, which has successfully backed companies including Quorn and Trainline, is expected to agree to a restructuring of Bullitt's finances in the coming weeks.
The change of control is expected to see the Business Growth Fund (BGF) - a £2.5bn vehicle set up by the UK's biggest high street lenders in the aftermath of the financial crisis - play a leading role in Bullitt's future.
People close to the talks said that an auction of Bullitt, which had been triggered by a large volume of unsold inventory, had resulted in a proposal led by the BGF, an existing shareholder in the business, and the company's co-founders.
If concluded, the deal would crystallise a rare disappointment for Exponent, which has seen each of its funds make impressive returns for investors since the firm was set up more than a decade ago.
So, As I understand it - Exponent have pulled out, this was the backer we talked about in last month’s podcast, who pulled out at the 11th hour.
And in conversations I have had with our contacts at Bullitt stated finance was being negotiated and it sounds like this is referring to the funding from BGF (Business Growth fund). The business growth fund was set up after the financial crisis and fingers crossed it can play a big roll in Bullitt’s future going forward.
BGF is an equity investor in the UK and Ireland that provides long-term, minority investment and value creation support to growing companies, it was set up.
So, let’s see what the future brings.
We were under the understanding that customers would be notified if anything was to change, but to date nobody has received any notifications, so no news is good news.
Motorola – they have not been discussed yet, what did you find out Andy with regard to this.
I am personally very disappointed by the scaremongering that has been online, as I said last time our thoughts have to be with all the staff at Bullitt around the world, who I know have worked very hard on this product and the other products they produce.
Read the full regard to what is going on with Bullitt online here

TwoNav, a breath of fresh air and what is going on at Bullitt, the creators of the Motorola Defy - Satellite link
1. TwoNav – a breath of fresh air - 2:00 minutes in
2. What has been going on at Bullitt, the creator of the Motorola Defy – satellite link? - 33:45 minutes in
3. Andy’s top tips - 46:51 minutes in
1. TwoNav – a breath of fresh air
Backstory – TwoNav has been on our radar for several years.
6 or 7 years? OS teamed up with TwoNav to create a OS branded GPS unit.
We bought one at that stage and within 2 weeks it was on eBay, why?
This partnership did not work as OS do not have the expertise to build and grow this type of technology in the UK.
So late last year TwoNav kept coming up in conversation so
Just before Christmas, we bought 1 x of each of their models and that was our Christmas holiday sorted as we started to get to grips and understand this new manufacturer –
TwoNav are based in Spain
Very keen to listen to feedback and build on what they have
We ended up stocking x 3 models –
* TwoNav Cross Plus
* TwoNav Terra
* TwoNav Aventurer 2 Plus
Map options available –
* Pre-loaded European maps
* 1:50k
* 1:25k
* 1:25k, 1:50k and 1:250k on Aventurer 2 plus
Summary –
* SatMap on steroids – clarity of screen
* Wireless transfer from phone/ tablet
* Easy to use, intuitive
* Made by someone who believes and is passionate about their product

2. Bullitt - maker of Motorolla Defy - Satellite link
Thursday - buy out was in place by their largest invester
Friday - they pulled out on Friday and sadly Bullitt Group ceased trading and was handed to Lloyds as the receivers
Article - The Verge - Key manufacturer closes down
Motorola are the 'brand' behind Bullitt, to date no news of what they are wanting to do with regard to Bullitt going forward.
The founders of Bullitt have personally put money in place so subscribers can continue with their current service for at least the next month.
Bullitt are going to email customers to update them on what is going to happen, but to date nothing sent which has to be good news.
Good luck for the future of all the staff at Bullitt, the team here at GPS Training are thinking of you and your families
3. Top Tips - on using an outdoor GOPS unit/ watch
TwoNav- Backlight 50% rather than Auto – Main Menu – Settings – System – Display & Brightness – Auto Brightness off – slide bar 50%

* Uses Inmarsat and Echostar satellite systems (Geostationary i.e. always at the same point in the sky)
Inmarsat built in uk assembled in Toulouse by Airbus defense, 14 satellites, echostar 10 satellites, L Band high speed – in tests messages 10 – 20 seconds
* SOS response manned by people – Focuspoint SOS response center
(Same one used by Spot Head office Florida , offices in 16 x locations)
* Works with an app on both Android10 and IOS14
* Uses both cellular, wifi coverage or satellites – intelligent switch with app to save Satellite messages when not needed using wifi or mobile
* If you send a message to someone without the app the message gets them to download the app – app to app messages
* Produced for Motorola by a company called Bullitt – who already releasing phones with technology built inbuilt this is a Satellite link, like the Garmin inReach messenger and Zoleo
* BUT, the big thing is the cost. Both the Zoleo and Garmin products start from £200.00 for the device and monthly cost from £12.99 / £18.00 a month and activation fee, Motorola Defy device for £149.99 includes 30 x messages a month with no fees for a year
After year 1 options £4.99 month 30 messages per month , £9.99 a month 125 messages per month ,£29.99 a month 400 messages per month
+ a great package called freedom pay £59.99 for the year and get 250 x messages total but could be 5 one month then 50 the next (250 total for the year)
gets around people who don’t walk/ explore every week etc – use intensively then not at all)
SOS assist included
Overage bolt-ons available
* Get device and 1 year subscription for £149.99 or device on its own for £99.99
* Currently working in Europe and North America and Australia, New Zealand and Latin America my mid 2023 and all other regions before the end of the year- really fro land based eg only approx. 30miles out to sea from coastlines
* Waterproof (IP68 rating) meaning it’s sand, grit, dirt and dustproof as well as fully waterproof, MIL Spec 810h, only 70grams, 11mm thick
* Check in, share your location and send/ receive messages.
* SOS button and Check-in button can be used without connected app
* Live tracking is coming down the line and my answer to the cost of this was – the ‘bolt on price’ is TBC
* The only downside I can see is 12 hours of battery life but great for the day walker – just in case based on 2 check-ins and hour, due to size thinking waterproof bag, power bank, only 600mah battery from usb-c hence would not need big power bank
* Available Mid-April this year
So my thoughts are for the day walker/ climber/ cyclist/ remote worker this really does make two-way satellite communication accessible.
For the ‘explorer’ or those spending a lot of time ‘off grid’ and want a better battery life, grid ref etc (inReach mini) the Garmin and Zoleo products will meet those requirements.
As comparison Zoleo 12min tracking 200hrs +
Messenger 46 days with 30min tracking, inreach mini2 30 days with 30min tracking

Currently in Orbit
GPS – 31 with 24 operational 95% of the time – Dual Frequency L1 & L5
In March 2021, about 52% of GPS satellites had L5. By 2023, we expect about 71%
GLONASS – 23 Operational – Single Frequency L1
GALILEO – 30 with 24 operational – Dual Frequency E1 & E5
Accuracy
We tend to find using GPS & Galileo we achieve approx.. 10ft (3m) Glonass similar
We have seen with GPS & Galileo / WASS & EGNOS on with a high sensitive antenna GPS Device e.g. GPSMap 65,66,86 Montana 700 Series accuracy down to approx. 8ft (2.5m)
We tend to find with Multi Band + GNSS using a GPSMap65s or 66sr unit accuracy approx. – 7ft (2M) we have seen this down as low as 5ft (1.5m)
Things that affect accuracy - How are you holding the device, view of sky, tall buildings cliffs etc.
A handheld Device needs to lock onto 4 x Satellites locked to determine both your location and GPS height data.
Etrex 10,22x,32x, Touch 25 & 35 use GPS or GPS & Glonass + Waas / Egnoss
Oregon 700– use GPS or GPS & Glonass + Waas / Egnoss
GPSMap66s uses GPS or GPS & Glonass or GPS & Galileo + Wass / Egnoss
GPSMap66i uses GPS or GPS & Galileo + Wass Egnoss
Montana 700 uses GPS or GPS & Glonass or GPS & Galileo + Wass / Egnoss
Montana 700i / 750i uses GPS or GPS & Galileo + Wass / Egnoss
GPSMap65s & 66sr – GPS or Multi GNSS or Multi GNSS + Multi Band
Multi GNSS Picks up GPS, GLONASS & Galileo
Multi GNSS + Multi Band (Dual Frequency) - GPS, GLONASS & Galileo L1 (e1) & GPS & Galileo L5 (e5)
When the 65 or 66sr receives multi-band from a satellite, it can use those multiple signals to do quality analysis and correction, reducing the error introduced by bouncing signals (multi-path error) and the earth's atmosphere.
What Advantages Do Multi-Band Devices Have Over Other Models?
More consistent tracklogs and improved positioning when using the device in challenging environments (e.g. around tall buildings in urban canyons as well as tree cover).
Can achieve accuracy within about +/- 2 meters or 6 feet under ideal conditions versus the +/- 3 meters or 10 feet accuracy of other models.
Detect (and reject) reflected satellite signals better than a single frequency receiver which improves accuracy.
Better equipped to account for and correct errors that can be introduced by atmospheric effects (e.g. ionosphere errors).
WAAS - Wide Area Augmentation System
WAAS consists of multiple ground reference stations positioned across the U.S. that monitor GPS satellite data. Two master stations, located on either coast, collect data from the reference stations and create a GPS correction message. This correction accounts for GPS satellite orbit and clock drift plus signal delays caused by the atmosphere and ionosphere. The corrected differential message is then broadcast through 1 of 2 geostationary satellites, or satellites with a fixed position over the equator. The information is compatible with the basic GPS sig...Wed, 01 Feb 2023 - 55min - 86 - GPS Training Podcast – number 80

* Using your mobile phone outdoors – now the UK temperatures have started to plummet
15% - 20% loss of battery life in winter in the UK
it’s possible for your iPhone to suddenly die despite indicating 30% battery lifetime left. So why is it that your iPhone battery dies in cold weather?
If your phone’s level of warmth drops below 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) or gets above 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) its function is likely to fail.
* Use a High-Tech Thermal Protection Case in winter months....Thu, 01 Dec 2022 - 47min - 84 - GPS Training Podcast – number 78
What is going on at SatMap ..... head torches for the darker nights and who has been pressing the SOS buttons on Garmin's inReach devices?
In this month’s podcast –
* SatMap - update
* As we go into the darker night’s upon us we are going to look at head torches
* With Garmin hitting 10,000 Garmin inReach® SOS Incidents we look at how they are broken down
* Andy’s top tips
* SatMap update
After we told the world what was going on at SatMap back in August it’s great to SatMap have chosen to now tell their customers.
In the last month, our phone has been hot with people asking what their options are going forward.
* So who are SatMap Andy and what where the main benefits of this GPS unit?
So here we go lets quick fire a few questions –
* Will SatMap Expedition continue? – SatMap software systems
* Will their app continue
* Have you got any spare batteries?
* Will you be getting any more batteries in stock?
* What will happen when my current battery fails?
* Do you have any accessories? – Yes, carry cases, lanyards, backplates, quadlock accessories
* Are SatMap/ or you going to be able to get any overseas mapping
* Can you still get tech support from SatMap
* Are SatMap still honouring their warranties?
* Headtorches
With the clocks changing last weekend I see the Mountain rescue teams have, rightly, started a large campaign telling everybody they should be carrying a headtorch, as you can easily be caught out now the nights have drawn in.
We are not going to review headtorches (I will link to an article doing this in the show notes), but wea re just going to discuss the main things to think about when looking at headtorches –
* Brand
2. Lumens – off set between brightness and battery life
* Battery life
* Battery type – rechargeable batteries, disposable batteries and hybrid
* Boost mode – some headtorches have this feature
* Weight
* How waterproof – as they will be on your head, whatever the weather
* Other extras some have – rear light on back etc
* Best budget headtorch and price? Nebo 750 – 250 lumen weight 110g, IPX4– We like the boost of 750 lumen looking further down the trail – 250 lumens 5hrs £28.99
* Best top-end headtorch and price? Trail Runner free 400 lumen – weight 119g , IPX5– We like the Unclip of battery pack when cold to increase battery life and takes weight away, red led on back when running, intelligent twin beam long and close, higher ip rating than Nebo, 400 lumens 2hrs - £68.99
Both have low setting to increase battery when not needing standard
Nebo 15hrs 80 lumens
Silva15hrs 50 lumens
Top tips for using a headtorch –
* Practice – like anything the more you use it and get to grips with it, the more familiar you are with it
* Have as low (brightness) as you can get away with
* Carry spare batteries/ headtorch
* Change/ charge your battery if you know you are going to be using it
* Store it in your rucksack somewhere where you know it is, easy to get access to
6. Keep Spare batteries close to body to keep warm will improve performance

Two-way satellite communicators and GPS Training
In this month’s podcast –
A bit of a theme running through this month’s podcast with the launch of 2 new products in the last few weeks
* Zoleo – Two-way satellite communicator
* Garmin inReach messenger – launched in the last few days
* GPS in the Hills – we will look at what this is and the areas we are covering in it
* GPS courses – 2023 dates in place
* Andy’s top tips
So, without a further a do let’s get on with this month’s GPS Training Podcast
* Zoleo – Two-way satellite communicator
What is it?
ZOLEO connects with your phone or tablet to provide seamless global messaging that follows you in and out of mobile network coverage — plus added safety features you can count on worldwide including industry-leading SOS alerting features.
* Message anywhere over satellite, mobile network and Wi-Fi
* SOS emergency alerting with 24/7 monitoring and progress reports

* Garmin inReach messenger – launched in the last few days
Compact/ Rugged design
Two-way messaging
Garmin Messenger app
Check in messages
Trackback routing
On device display
InReach weather
Battery life – 28 days
Safety charging – for mobile phone
SOS
Location sharing
Comparing these two very similar products – which is best?
Garmin Positives against Zoleo
More standalone eg small screen allows selecting of pre-set messages, typing a message, viewing weather data , receiving & viewing messages – do not necessarily need phone paired
Screen has basic trackback arrow
Better Battery
Smaller lighter
No charge for preset messages
Messenger app works seamlessly for message to come either via mobile data or Satellite
Reverse charge to phone – make sure you have USB C to phone cable with you
Against compared to Zoleo
Min Safety package £12.99 annually contract or £14.99 for month by month freedom does not include tracking £0.10 per point need to really use tracking you would want to us recreation package £24.99 annual contract or £34.99 for month by month
Zoleo min package £18.00 + £4.50 location share
Zoleo min 3 months then can suspend but £3.50 a month for suspend
Costs £40.00 more than Zoleo
Harder to transfer between family members than Zoleo
To message you friends do need to install Garmin messenger app having said that easy to use app
Zoleo
Positive against Garmin
Designated email address and number, giving number to contacts they do not need any apps unless they want to track you
Very easy do unpair from phone and give to another family member to use and pair
£40.00 cheaper
With tracking you can use the £18.00 + £4.50 add on, although less messages than Garmins mid package you would save £2.50 per month
Less features potentially some customers my find easier to use – one simple check in button

Can you navigate with just a GPS watch? We discuss this and lots more in this month's GPS Training Podcast
* When are watches best suited - our personal experiences - EPIX or FENIX 7?* Transferring your planned activity to your GPS using the Connect app to a compatible GPS unit and then following ‘a course’* And then finally we have - Andy’s top tips
1. When are watches best suited compared to a GPS unit - our personal experiences. This discussion has come about after my experiences last week.
For the latest ‘walk and talk’ video I was creating with the Garmin Epix (Gen2) We planned a route on our free OS route planning software and headed off into the Cheviot Hills.
I have walked many long distance/ waymarked trails with just a watch
BUT
Could I navigate a pre-planned route that was put together by linking undefined footpaths together?
Struggled, needed to use an OS mapOR
A OS map on a GPS unit
IT ALSO through another question into the equation
1:25k maps – You need these to show you the open access in England and Wales – I could picture these in my mind.
* Video comparing Fenix v Epix* Walk and talk with Garmin Fenix 7* Walk and talk with Garmin Epix (Gen 2)
To find out more and watch the ‘walk and talk’ I refer to please go to our website – gpstraining.co.uk > Homepage and halfway down the homepage you will see a link to ‘walk and talk' – let me take you on a walk with a GPS unit
2. Transferring your planned activity to your GPS using the Connect app to a compatible GPS unit and then following ‘a course’
What are we looking at here?
Traditionally we have planned a route in Garmin BaseCamp (or another route planning software) and transferred this to a unit using a USB cable. We then follow either the route or track
But with a number of the ‘new generation units’ we can do this wirelessly using the Garmin Connect App, this converts it to a ‘course’ though.
* Navigational experiences – Route, track and course* Compatible GPS Units - GPSMAP 66 series, 86 series and Montana 700 series* Use our free route planning software - so easy to useOver the coming months we are going to bring this bringing into our physical GPS Training courses we deliver around the country.Garmin GPS Training Courses (two day, nationwide) -South DownsNew ForestNorthamptonshireGloucestershirePeak DistrictLake DistrictNorthumberlandScottish Borders

Going overseas, heading off-grid, birdseye, and transferring .gpx files onto a Garmin GPS watch.
In this month’s podcast
* As many of us are venturing overseas again we look at - Overseas mapping - Official or TOPO Active/ OSM* We then will discuss going off grid – and using the - inReach mini/ inReach mini 2 * We discuss the - End or Garmin’s Birdseye Vouchers* We will look at some training videos we have put together for those wanting to do a long-distance trail, whilst using a Garmin watch, either an Instinct or Fenix, to navigate with – Concentrating on the planning process you will need to go through.* And then finally we have - Andy’s top tips
So, without a further a do let’s get on with this month’s GPS Training Podcast
1. Overseas mappingIt’s nice to be back on this subject after the last two years – Garmin unitsOSM – Open Street/ Open-sourced maps – £19.99 - £29.99- Very much like Garmin’s Topo Active maps - more here about TOPO ACTIVE maps v OS maps
- Great if overlaying a .gpx file, as walking a long-distance trail etc
Official maps - £73.99 - £138.99
- Garmin’s ‘official’ maps for each of the countries
- We usually get then in around 7 – 14 days
SatMap units – we are currently struggling to get overseas maps, but hopefully we will get a solution to this in the next few weeks, fingers crossed.
To find out more about the new GPS Store > Maps
2. Going off grid – and using the - inReach mini/ inReach mini 2
What are the inReach mini’s
Not just a SOS button
Already got a GPS device unit – what benefits does the inReach mini it give you
To find out more about the range of Garmin inReach mini devices please go to our website – GPSTraining.co.uk > GPS Store and then – Two-way satellite communication
3. The next thing on this month's GPS Training Podcast - End or Garmin’s Birdseye Vouchers
4. The next thing we are going to look at on this months Podcast is how we can plan a long-distance walk and get the info onto your GPS watch
This subject and solution has come about after plenty of discussions in the GPS training office.
The problem, if you are walking a long distance trail and you want to download a .gpx file and edit it into your day sections what’s the best way to do this.
What is a .gpx file?
If you are using a handheld unit with OS maps how would you do this?
Why can’t you do this if you are a watch user?
* 1.5 hours to load the Fenix TOPO Active maps in BaseCamp* Can’t edit in the online version of Connect* Can’t edit in the online version of Explore
So, the solution – BaseCamp with open-sourced maps on
Export .gpx file into Connect
To find out more and see the solution we have created some videos in the online resource – our online training platform. Please just go to gpstraining.co.Sun, 01 May 2022 - 75 - GPS Training Podcast – number 69
In this month’s podcast
* We look at the range of Garmin Fenix 7 GPS watches* Ahead of Andy’s Spine Challenger race in June, if you don’t know what that is, don’t worry, we will tell you more, BUT, we are going to discuss the kit he has been training with and what he will be taking with him on the event.* Andy’s top tips
So, without a further ado let’s get on with this month’s GPS Training Podcast
1. The first thing on this month's Podcast is a look at the Garmin Fenix 7 range of watchesIn the range of watches we have –
* Garmin Fenix 7s – Sapphire Solar* Garmin Fenix 7 - Sapphire Solar* Garmin Fenix 7x – Sapphire Solar
There are more in the full range but we are just looking at those for the ‘Outdoor’ sector – This is how Garmin class or account.
We are very much for the walker, hiker, runner, ultra-runner, and any other outdoor activity.
Buttons and touch screen
In the past all Garmin Fenix Watches had button control only, the benefits of this being:
NOW - best of both worlds with the addition of a touch screen.
Power Sapphire
With the Fenix 7 Garmin have put a solar panel bonded to the underside of the Sapphire Screen, this is the first time Garmin have incorporated a Solar panel with a Sapphire screen.
– Increased overall Fenix 7 Solar battery life by 33% (7S vs 6S) to upwards of 68% (7X vs 6X)
Premium Materials
All of the Sapphire screen versions of the Fenix 7 watches come with a Titanium Bezel which is lighter and tougher than a standard steel Bezel.
Multi Band
This is the first Garmin Fenix watch to have Multi-GNSS Multi Band which gives you improved signal in challenging satellite environments. (Multi-GNSS Multi Band function is only available on the Fenix7 Sapphire versions only) with all other versions of the Fenix 7 watches you do have Multi GNSS.
Multi-GNSS Multi band (Fenix 7 Sapphire Versions only) – This new feature allows the Fenix 7 Sapphire watches to lock on to not just two sets of GNSS but multiple satellites system together which can provide military grade precision, this is great when a higher accuracy is needed due to
The Fenix 7 Sapphire watches are the most accurate Fenix watches to date.
Global Maps
The recently updated TOPO ACTIVE maps now have contour lines and with the new map manager you are able to download (over WIFI) free downloadable TopoActive maps from around the world via a easy-to-use interface.
These are both recreational users and the ability to download the newly branded SkiView maps it gives you the flexibility we have all been looking for the ski enthusiast.
Up Ahead
This is a new feature that has not been available before on the Fenix Watches. It can let you know / display what’s up ahead on a course that you have sent to your unit by showing a rolling

In this special ’mid-month’ podcast I am joined by a special guest, Tommy Wilkinson. He was, and still is, a keen racer, having won numerous Scottish DH races and spent two seasons chasing the World Cup dream as a dirtbag privateer. A “little bobble” on a jump in 2013 left Tommy with a fractured skull, brain hemorrhage, a spinal cord contusion, damaged disc, and permanently paralyzed right arm.

2. The next thing on this month’s podcast is planning your walk on a mobile device on our free OS route planning software.
If people don’t know, what is the GPS Training Free OS route planner?
On our pre-Christmas podcast, we mentioned that you could use our route planner with an iPad Pro.A gentleman called Ian kindly left a comment after listening to it saying 'You don’t need an IPad Pro to use the free route planning software. I have a standard iPad 5 with a small wireless mouse and it works great'.So this got us thinking –
A wireless mouse, what could we do with this and an iPad, mobile phone (Android or iPhone) and our free OS route planning software.
We now have 2 x new training videos (one for iPad/ iPhone users and a second for android Users) on how you can plan your walk on your device using our free OS route planning software and a wireless mouse, then transfer it onto a compatible Garmin GPS device.
To find both the OS Route planning software and the two new training videos please just go to our website – GPSTraining.co.uk > OS Planner (top menu bar) and right down at the bottom of the page there are 2 x new training videos taking you through everything

2. Big progressions over the past year – post-sale automation – We tweak and work at this all the time. LynnWhat is it?Series of emails customers get from us for the year after they have bought a GPS unit from usIt encourages them to look at the resources they get from us – including the support and training options they have access to.
And therefore, people know where to find the answers they are looking for.
Many people do pay after the first ‘free first year’ to continue to have access to both the online resource and one of our support packages.

* The first thing on this month’s Podcast is a very big thank you to Ian
As you may hear we have no Ian on this month’s Podcast, this is, very sadly he has decided to leave GPS Training.
Ian has been a member of the GPS Training team for 14 years.
He has also been my fellow co-host on the Podcast since episode 19, so he hosted 40 Podcasts with me, and despite everything that has happened over the last 18 months we had lots of fun doing so.
He also delivered x 3 courses in the South – South Downs, New Forest, and Northamptonshire.
So it was with a very heavy heart I accepted Ian’s resignation in the last month and he will be a massive loss for GPS Training.
Thanks for everything Ian over the past 14 years and best of luck with everything going forward from all the team at GPS Training and the listeners of the GPS Training Podcast.
A big thank you Ian

Hi Ian,
I have a question about my GPSMAP 66sr.
How do I change the colour of an imported track? I want to do this because the default purple is difficult to see against roads when wearing sunglasses.

2021 Garmin Map Card, Spine Race, what have they done to the OS app, more units discontinued and ask Ian.
In this month’s podcast
* A quick update on the 2021 OS map cards from Garmin* Spine race – well done to all our customers who have taken part in this event.* After we sung the praises of the OS app in a recent Podcast, in their wisdom they managed to undo any good work they had done just a few weeks later. We look at what they have done.* Yet more units discontinued by Garmin, we look at a year where Garmin have certainly cleared the stable out.* Stock availability – sorry I know it is a recurring theme, but a quick update on stock issues* Ask Ian – the questions you have been asking Ian over the past month
The first thing on this month’s Podcast is a look at the recent update on the Garmin 1:50k map card
* Last month we discussed that Garmin, after a very long wait, updated the 1:25k map card* In the past month we also received and update of the 1:50k TOPO Great Britain PRO 1:50k map card* So both map cards are now V2* OS release ¼ of the country every year as a map update so cards get updated every 4 years but for some reason the 1:50k map card has been updated after 3 years.* What changes on OS maps?
You can buy the new map card as a standalone product on GPS Training and all new Garmin GPS unit bundles are now being shipped with updated map cards, unlike some other retailers
The next thing on this month’s GPS training podcast is a look back at the Spine race – well done to all our customers who have taken part in this event.
The Montane Spine Race is widely regarded as one of the world’s toughest endurance races.
There are both summer and winter events and the summer event started on Saturday 19th June.
In our 31st episode, we interviewed Paul Freeman after he completed the Spine Challenger race.A truly epic challenge that will test your physical resilience and mental fortitude. Racing non-stop along the Pennine Way – 268 miles
There are ‘shorter’ races within the main race but all are true challenges.
As I spoke about this in last month’s Podcasts many people are introduces to GPS units for the first time with an event like this.
We have had a number of customers participating in the event and well done to all those who took part.
Before they start the Spine Race they have to demonstrate they can get their current Grid reference from their GPS unit.
So, Ian how would people do this –
* Satellite page* Create waypoint of your current location
If you want to find more about the Spine race please just go to their website – thespinerace.comThe next thing on this month's podcast is the recent updates to the OS app.
After Ian sung the praises of the OS app in a recent Podcast, in their wisdom OS managed to undo any good work they had done just a few weeks later.
So Ian, what have they done?
Basically, when you plan a route on the app, it exports as a track in to Garmin Explore unlike all the other apps you can use…..
I am slowly working on the OS. They have now admitted that they have trashed it for the time being and accept it needs to be altered back ...Thu, 01 Jul 2021 - 45min - 62 - GPS Training podcast – number 56

Ask Ian. In this months Podcast we test Ian's tech knowledge, as he answers some of the listeners questions.
Questions -
* Anthony Tranter - In the Basecamp software when I look at the GPS unit I see the recorded Tracks. The strange thing is the unit has recorded two tracks with different naming conversations. For example one might be named 2021-02-21-11:00:31 (consistent naming convention with Saved Tracks in the unit) and another might be named 21/02/2021 09:42:24. This looks like it’s the same track but notice the difference in naming. By can you tell me what the differences between these two tracks is please and which one do I keep?
Forward facing date – FIT fileBackward date - gpx file

* Allan Humphrey - The Garmin eTrex 32x I recently purchased from you is doing what I wanted and expected it to do - recording walk timings, distance covered, etc., but there is an issue with the walk mapping that is troubling me.
At the end of a walk I check that the route taken is clearly drawn onto the map, then I switch the unit off. No problem so far.
On arrival home, even with the unit turned off, I find that the system has drawn a straight line connecting my home to the end point of my walk. Sometimes this can be many miles, and the actual walk route is then a tiny section at the end of a very long connecting line, making it unreadable.
Is there a way of preventing the GPS from drawing this unwanted connecting line, and why does it do it?
Allan Humphrey.
Save the track before heading home/switching the GPS off
* Elaine Savage - I use an Oregon 600 GPS to record the tracks that I walk and I have noticed a discrepancy in the distances I am recording once I transfer my walk to BaseCamp on my Mac. I am always careful to clear my tracks before starting to record, to start recording and then to stop recording and save the track before I step inside my house (if walking from home) or get into the car (if travelling to a walk). So I am fairly confident that I am not adding extra data that I haven’t walked.
The discrepancy can be observed by comparing the following screen shots:
In the first shot, I have highlighted all the index points:and you can see that the total distance is recorded as 5.8 miles. In the next screenshot, I have excluded the final index point:
and the distance is recorded as 5.5 miles even though the leg distance is only 16 feet. In the same way, if I exclude the first index point, with a leg distance of only 1 foot, the total distance comes out as 5.5 miles.
I have noticed this discrepancy for some time, especially when trying to understand why a fellow walker’s GPS came up with a different measurement to mine. But it has been highlighted today when I decided to export the gpx file to my OSMaps application. The route recorded on OSMaps taken from the gpx file recorded by my Oregon 600 comes out as 5.5 miles.
So where has my 0.3 of a mile gone? And is there something I can do to ensure that my Oregon 600 is measuring my tracks accurately?
Do hope you can help.
Kind regards
Elaine Savage

Walk and talk, new 1:25k map card and Ian's FAQ's
* We look at our new video series - Walk and talk* Mobile phone apps* New 1:25k map card – release date* And then we have Ian’s FAQ’s, the frequently asked questions Ian gets asked whilst supporting our customers.
The first thing on this months Podcast is a look at our ‘walk and talk' series
* The idea behind the videos
In a series of videos we look at a number of Outdoor GPS units and give a simple, practical guide on how each of them works and the navigational experience each of them gives.
Not training videos – but hopefully give you an insight of the ‘navigational experience’ of each of the units.
* Walk and talk – GPSMAP 66i– 30 mins* Walk and talk – Montana 700 – 20 minsMontana 700 Carry case – great find* Walk and talk – SatMap Active 20 – 25 mins
It’s been interesting to see the seasons changing as during the first one there was snow on the ground, and it was a cold day, then last weekend (SatMap Active 20) I was in shirt sleeves
To find out more and watch the ‘walk and talk’ videos go to – gpstraining.co.uk > news > walk and talk (currently third news story down) and I will also link to it from the show notes.
* The next thing on this months GPS training podcast is a look at Apps that a number of you have been using.
Have you had much experience of using mobile phone apps to navigate with Ian?
I am starting to put a ‘piece’ together for the website and reviewing each of the ‘main’ navigational apps, of course there are many downsides of apps, but there are some instances when they can be a backup for either your GPS unit or paper map.
One thig I have learnt from this podcast, especially from my interview with
* Lindley Chambers (safety coordinator for the spine race ) – Podcast number 35 – I will again link to this interview in the show notes - http://gpsonlinecourse.co.uk/gps-training-podcast-number-35/* is ‘not to have all your eggs in one basket’. Different navigational options gives you a ‘backup’ just in case something goes wrong with one of them.
Some options (ideas)
* SatMap app* ViewRanger* OS app* Garmin Explore* Kamoot* Map my walk* All Trailsideas, ideas
If people have any thoughts of feedback about these or other apps please do get in touch.
Please note here we have been talking about using a mobile phone app as a backup, rather than your main navigational aid.
If you are thinking – of course he’s going to say that.
To prove it is not just me, take a look at an article I have written for the website - Stop using smartphones to naviga...Thu, 01 Apr 2021 - 51min - 57 - GPS Training podcast – number 51
An interview with Greg Villalobos, who is not only a trail rider but also works extensively in media. A great chat discussing a wide range of topics.
Greg's name kept cropping up in my conversations with customers, because this guy called Greg had done a great review on YouTube on the Montana 700i GPS unit, from a trail rider’s perspective.
* First of all, Greg, what is Trail Riding?* How did you get into it?* Away from Trail Riding what is your full-time job? Adventure Spec, well come to that a little bit later - Look after all their media and communications* Part of the team that launched the TET, and built the TET website amongst other aspects.
In 2012 Greg bought my first dirt bike and joined the Trail Riders Fellowship to learn where to ride. A new world of adventure riding was opened for him, however the way the organisation presented itself was a far cry from his experience. It’s brand had not kept up with the times.
Train Riders Federation
Greg then presented a proposal to re-brand the TRF and over four years helped to steer the perception of the club into a more positive, dynamic and welcoming organisation.
Membership rose from 3,000 to 5,000 and the TRFs influence within the trail riding world as well as public bodies concerned with green roads shifted.
He continues to work with the TRF as a contractor and particularly enjoy being part of a team that has long-term goals that we are able to help steer the ship towards. My roles cover a wide range of duties including strategy, media generation, marketing, fund-raising, design and communication.
Perception of Trail Riders – how can this be improved?
This is how it all started (video production relating to motorbikes?) – 2016 - Can you ride a dirtbike from the north of England to Buckingham Palace and back on dirt roads with no map and relying purely on the kindness of strangers to show you the way?

Broadcasting The Dakar Rally – Lyndon Poskitt
The Dakar Rally is one of the biggest events in motorsport, in fact its viewing figures are only beaten by Formula 1.
Any Dakar fan will tell you that they live for the 2 weeks at the start of January when the best off road racers in the world take on the South American desert.
They will also tell you that despite the size of the event, the coverage is also terrible, with short slots on satellite TV broadcast each evening that mostly focus on the front runners.
In 2017 adventure motorcycle racers Lyndon Poskitt changed the game.
I was part of a team put together by Adventure Spec to disrupt the traditional Dakar experience and broadcast as close to live as possible Lyndon's efforts in the desert.
My role was based back in sunny England, in the middle of the night, receiving media, and telling the story to thousands through social media.
We opened the lid on what had been a very closed book.
In 2018 we did it all again, this time with professional film maker Dario Leonetti on hand filming and editing in the desert with Lyndon.
I don't think he's ever worked so hard in his life.
I also wrote and directed 'Malle Moto - The Forgotten Dakar Story'.

Questions that are in the hat
* If you could go anywhere in the world, where would that be and why?* If you were going off today on a 15 mile walk what GPS unit would you take with you?* If you could make one thing change in this business overnight (no budget), what would it be?* AA batteries or built-in battery in a GPS unit?* Favorite workday of the week and why?* Favorite course location?* Favorite walk?* What one sneaky thing do you keep in your rucksack?
New GPST website – very topical at the moment, as it’s just been live just over a month

2. The next thing on this month's Podcast is Ian’s FAQ’s, the frequently asked question he gets asked whilst supporting our customers.
It has become apparent over the last few weeks that one or two of our customers are going in to the Internal Storage of their Garmin or Satmap GPS and altering/adding/deleting various files and folders or using their micro SD map cards to store all sorts of things on them.
Please don’t do it. I can only think of these times when it would be appropriate to do so.
Garmin
Corrupt gpx file – the link for the instructions is here
Deleting FIT files – the link for the instructions is here
Backing up Birdseye mapping – the link for the instructions is here
Satmap
With a new Active 20, sometimes the Route folder doesn’t initially appear and needs to be created. In this instance
* Mac Finder/Windows File Explorer>double click Satmap internal folder>right click in the space>New>Folder>ROUTES* Disconnect the Active 20>power button>Main Menu screen>Folders>Internal Storage>Refresh>the folder should then appear
Wearables
Deleting FIT files – this is exactly the same as for that for a GPS
Courses – these can’t be deleted via Basecamp.
Connect the watch to your PC/Mac>Primary folder>Garmin folder>Courses folder
Map cards
Please don’t store anything on them. They are there for preloaded maps only
Don’t forget we have lots of tips and solutions to your questions in the GPS Training online resource - go to – gpstraining – click on – online resource – on the top menu bar – and then log in – select your unit and you will see the top tips for that unit down at the bottom of the menu of units.

There are three races that make up the Montane Spine Race, if you don’t know the Spine Race is a continues race (i.e you walk/ run through the day and night) along the Pennine Way and if that is not hard enough in it’s own right, you do this in January.
The three races are -
* Montane Spine Challenger - 108 miles in length
Started Saturday 11th Jan 2020: 8.00 am* Montane Spine MRT Challenge – 108 miles (open to serving Mountain rescue team members)
Started Saturday 11th Jan 2020: 9.00 am* Montane Spine Race – 268 miles in length
Started Sunday 12th Jan 2020: 8.00 am
On each of the three races there are time limits to complete them.
Paul is navigating this epic journey with a SatMap Active 20 GPS unit with Platinum mapping (1:10k, 1:25k and 1:50k).
He has in the build up to the event been on both our SatMap GPS training courses (in the Lakes and Northumberland) and also has attended number of our online webinars.
So, last week I caught up with Paul in the GPS Training office, he had his medal with him and I hope you agree it was a truly inspirational, open and honest chat with him.
If you want to lean more about the SatMap Active 20 Paul used for the race please go to the GPS Training website – gpstraining.co.uk – click on gps store – and the SatMap GPS units on the left hand side and at the time this Podcast was recorded, Feb 2020 we have 25% off all SatMap GPS units

Welcome to this month’s GPS Training podcast, it’s our 30th episode.
* In this month’s we again have Ian and me Jon, both from GPS Training
So, without further ado let’s get on with today’s podcast ……
It’s the New Year, so today we are going have a slightly different podcast.
Not only have we got new theme music, which I know will make Ian happy, but it is going to be a Podcast of two halves –
* The first part of this month’s podcast we are going look back at some of the key developments, stories and funny antidotes of 2019* Then the second half we are going to look forward and dream a little in what we would like to see in the world of outdoor GPS navigation
I hope you enjoy the ‘slightly different’ January GPS Training podcast.
I must state I loved putting these months running order together, looking and listening back over the past year of Podcasts and also thinking forward to what we could have in the future in the world of Outdoor GPS navigation.
--- So, first of all its’s time to look back at the past twelve months
The first-ever GPS Training Podcast – September 2017 – you may have heard this story before but back in one of our monthly staff meetings when I raised the idea of a podcast, one month later it happened.
In February 2019 (podcast number 19), which was Ian’s first podcast, Andy’s last one came out on the 31st December, we looked at –
It’s been an interesting year, key products –
* GPSMAP66i – June, podcast 23 – big game changer, more of this to come? What is it, the i* Casio Pro Trek GPS watch – July, podcast 24. Oli flew up all the way from Southampton to be on the podcast* Fenix 6 GPS watch, especially the solar charging option – September podcast (number 27) then the solar launch just last month December (Podcast number 29)* GPSMAP86s and 86i – December (podcast number 29) - these are Outdoor GPS units that are very much aimed at the Sea Kayakers etc.* Xpedition 2 (from SatMap) – we have not really discussed it on the podcasts, but we do like it
Key guests –
* Andi from Garmin, talking about the 66i – that was a one-story podcast, as it was such a big launch (June, podcast number 23)* Alex on twice from the AA team (August and October)
Alex and two of his friends Seb and Elliot set off on a 10,000 mile journey through 20 countries in a £600.00 Ford Fiesta and wow what an adventure they had.
* Back in March (podcast number 20) I talked to some of our participants on one of the GPS Training courses we had had the previous month at Mungrisdale, in the Lake District. A cracking group that just ‘got it’.* Tris, (podcast number 25) about how the 66i had opened the world up to him. He has epilepsy* Tom, from Garmin, who has been on lots talking about anything I ask him to talk about. A good supporter of us here at GPS training
Fun story –
* Classification of GPS units, submerging GPS units –Wed, 01 Jan 2020 - 1h 02min - 35 - GPS Training Podcast – number 29
Welcome to this month’s GPS Training podcast, it’s our 29th episode.

So, without further ado let’s get on with today’s podcast ……
It's our 29th podcast.
In today’s podcast we look at –
* Choosing an outdoor GPS unit. What to look for, things to think about.* Course options – Garmin 2 day, SatMap 1 day, Webinars, Online resource – prices going up on Christmas Eve, so book early* Whether to own a watch or not as well as a GPS, do we need two devices?* We then have a chat with Tom about the

* I know last month, on podcast number 28, we talked about the best GPS units and watches as we started the build up to Christmas.
I know this did bring Ian out in a hot sweat, so this month no Christmas chat but we are going to look more at what to look for and think about when thinking about changing or purchasing your first GPS unit.

If you don’t get one, don’t worry as you can request one in the New Year.
But in preparation for this we thought it would be good just to talk through the physical GPS training courses we deliver around the UK.
* GarminIan delivers the courses in – New Forest (Burley), Northamptonshire (Great Cransley) and South Downs (Clayton)
Jon delivers the courses in – Northumberland (Rothbury), Peak District (Eyam) and Scottish Borders (Peebles)

Welcome to this month’s GPS Training podcast, it’s our 23rd episode.
Today we have a special Podcast, today Garmin have launched the all new GPSMAP66i, the first ever handheld GPS unit from Garmin to incorporate the inReach technology into a outdoor ‘navigational’ GPS.
Don’t worry if none of that makes sense, it hopefully will do so over the coming 30 – 45 minutes and it is such a big change in the world of outdoor GPS navigation we have given the subject a full Podcast all of its own.
* So we have got a special guest on to look at this all new product from Garmin, so welcome Andi Hayman, who is the Outdoor Sales Manager at Garmin to the GPS Training Podcast.* I have heard on the grapevine Andi that you are a subscriber to the GPS Training podcast, many thanks for that.* So, Andi can you just give us all a little bit of background about your role within Garmin.
· So Andi, we have two pieces of technology here that Garmin have put together in one to make the GPSMAP66i, I think a real game changer.
· The two pieces are –
* The Garmin GPSMAP66st GPS unit* The Garmin inReach Technology
So, lets look at each of these firstly individually and discuss what each of them are
So, firstly Andi, the GPSMAP66st – What is it and why this unit to incorporate the inReach technology into it?
* Launched October last year
* Buttoned GPS unit* First to use Galilao* Backlit buttons* Round trip routing (cycling only)* Better resolution screen* Larger screen than any other buttoned GPS units from Garmin* Geocaching Live* Download Birdseye satellite imagery over wifi* Expedition mode – reduces track points to 1 minute and screen goes blank. Extends batter to up to one week* Works alongside the Explore app
The GPSMAP66i is based on the GPSMAP66st, so Andi what does to ‘t’ stand for.
InReach technology, what is it and what are the benefits of it?
Garmin bought Delorme back in February 2016, who created this two-way satellite communication.
Since they bought Delorme Garmin have produced the –
* Garmin inReach SE+* inReach Explorer+* Garmin inReach Mini
Andi, how exactly does this technology work?
Iridium Sattelite system, the same as SatPhones use
You need a contract to use the inReach technology, these start from £14.99/ month
Pulling both the Garmin GPSMAP66st and the inReach technology into one device.
Launch date – when customers will get the units
12th June
To find out more about the all new Garmin GPSMAP66i please go to – gpstraining.co.uk > gps store > and click on - Garmin InReach - satellite communicator on the left-hand side
* And Finally
* Many thanks for listening and let us know anything you would like to be covered in the Podcast please do let us know and if you know of anybody interesting that you would like to hear interviewed in future podcasts please do let us know.* Give us a call especially if you are thinking of a new GPS unit* Please do look a look at both our physical GPS courses and also our webinars, just go to GPSTaining.co.uk and click on – GPS Training courses* Please do tell your friends about the podcast and GPS T...Thu, 06 Jun 2019 - 31min - 28 - GPS Training Podcast – number 22
Welcome to this month’s GPS Training podcast, it’s our 22nd episode.
* Today we Tom, from Garmin, Ian from GPS training also myself, Jon, from GPS Training
So, without further ado let’s get on with today’s podcast ……
It's our 22nd podcast.
In today’s podcast look at the following things –
· Time - 1 min 30 seconds - We talk over the waterproof classifications different GPS units get, and believe me we had plenty of fun doing this as we submerged GPS units in water for the duration of the chat.
· Time - 17 min 5 seconds - We talk over the changes to the handheld GPS marketplace with the advent of the Garmin GPSMAP66s
· Time - 23 min 5 seconds - And then we have Ian’s FAQ’s, both Garmin and SatMap and for the first time ever we have a FAQ for those of you wearing a Garmin GPS watch
Next thing we have this month’s podcast is a chat Tom, from Garmin about the some of the standards that some of the navigational products we use are tested to
All Garmin products IPX 7
What is IPX rating (waterproof rating) - International Protection Marking, IEC standard 60529, sometimes interpreted as Ingress Protection Marking, classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against intrusion (body parts such as hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures
So let’s put the unit to the test then – so we can submerse them for the duration of the test
X - relates to the - Solid particle protection - indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts (e.g., electrical conductors, moving parts) and the ingress of solid foreign objects
X - means there is no data available to specify a protection rating with regard to this criteria.
7 – relates to - Immersion, up to 1 m depth - Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion).
Test duration: 30 minutes - you can watch it online here
Tested with the lowest point of the enclosure 1000 mm below the surface of the water, or the highest point 150 mm below the surface, whichever is deeper.
SatMap Active 20 - IP68 waterproof & IK7 impact rating
6 - means - Dust tight (Garmin get an x for this – it does not relate to?) - No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact (dust tight). A vacuum must be applied. Test duration of up to 8 hours based on air flow.
8 - Immersion, 1 m or more depth - Test duration: agreement with manufacturer
Depth specified by manufacturer, generally up to 3 m
IK rating (Solely SatMap refer to this) - where “XX” is a number from 00 to 10 indicating the degrees of protection provided by electrical enclosures (including luminaires) against external mechanical impacts
IK07 Protected against 2 joules impact - Equivalent to impact of 0.5 kg mass dropped from 400 mm above impacted surface.
Garmin have tested the GPSMAP66s to the following standard - MIL STD 810G ruggedness for thermal, shock and water performance
To find out more about the GPS units we have available from GPS training please go to gpstraining.co.Wed, 01 May 2019 - 39min - 27 - GPS Training Podcast – number 21

Welcome Ross to the Podcast again, I know you are an avid listener to the GPS Training podcast and you appeared on our third podcast when you came and talked about SatMap, so welcome back.
Q1. First of all Ross, what is portable power?
* The simplest explanation is something you carry with you to provide power– usually in the form of battery packs.* You can expand it to add in things like solar panels and windup devices.* And the part most people forget is the actual device we are going to power, which have their own batteries.
Q2. We then need to think about what are people’s requirements and common things we need to consider
* The Length of time you will be without power – this can effect whether you choose solar v battery capacity* How much Weight you want to carry* And again the device you want to charge– Garmin AA + SatMap + do you want to charge anything else?* We therefore, I know this sounds obvious but it is a power bank, so potentially a replacement to that spare SatMap battery or those AA batteries you have rattling around in your rucksack
Q3. Now we now need to think about specific products.
* Batteries – replacement AA batteries – the most basic portable power* Power pac...Mon, 01 Apr 2019 - 44min - 26 - GPS Training Podcast – number 20

SatMap – OS Maps not loading – Remember if zoom out to far OS maps will not load only basemap top right of screen icon 3 x grey conical shapes (Layerd Map) must be there when you xoom in and then use button middle left to select Active 20 (Top left active 12)

This week we have launched ‘Geoffrey the GPS Training Bot’.
We are currently showcasing him to the public as we are training him but in the next few weeks, he will find his final home inside the GPS Training online resource.
Geoffrey the bot constantly analyses and catalogues any answers we email to customers and with a little bit of AI, its more learning and indexing rather than artificial Intelligence, but AI is the current buzz word, he will hopefully start to answer your GPS tech questions.
We have all been very entertained in the last few days so please do give him a go and over time his knowledge will hopefully broaden as we add more data for him to draw from.
To put Geoffrey the GPS Training Bot through his paces please click here and you will see Godfrey down the bottom left of our support portal.
I hope you find him as entertaining as we have!

We will look at some of these
1. Mark from SatMap
A little while ago I chatted from Mark who is the Product Manager at SatMap, I hope you agree he is a top guy who really knows his stuff.
2. Garmin GPSMAP66s, what a start and some great feedback
I have never seen such a demand from any new Outdoor GPS unit, why do think this has been Andy?
1. I think many of the customers who have had the 60s, 62s and then the GPSMAP64s have been waiting, for a number of years now, for a unit update and what a good one they have got.
I know Andy you have been starting to put together the videos for the ‘online resource’ is there anything you have come across since we discussed the unit in the last PodCast?
As I said earlier on we where very busy on launch day, if you want a real insight into our business we have a new ‘news’ article on our website - A look back at launch day of the Garmin GPSMAP66s GPS unit.
This news article has some embedded YouTube films from the launch day itself.
We now have lots of videos and information on our website so if you want to find out more about the Garmin GPSMAP66s and GPSMAP66st online here.
3. GPS Training courses in 2019 – what are the locations of our ‘physical’ courses
We have been busy putting together our ‘physical’ course programme for 2019, so where are the courses?

Things people are using their GPS units for -Sat, 03 Nov 2018 - 42min - 21 - GPS Training Podcast – Episode 15 – Special
In this Special Podcast, an extra standalone episode I interview Duncan a drift – Duncan Hutchison.
Duncan was on our 10th GPS training podcast, please do go back and listen to that one here.
If you have not heard this one please stop now, go back and listen to it as we are going to take the story up from where that one left off.
So if you need a quick reminder –
Duncan built his own boat and was aiming to row across the Atlantic in it.
You named to boat “Sleipnir” (the 8 legged horse). The 8 legged horse which was legendary for his strength, courage and speed. It is believed that Sleipnir was not only the fastest horse, but exceptionally smooth and that he could be ridden over the sea and through the air, which is where he got his name, the meaning of which is “smooth” or “gliding”.Tue, 16 Oct 2018 - 58min - 20 - GPS Training Podcast – Episode 14

2. TOPO PRO mapping – to route or not to route
3. Other interesting activities people are using outdoor GPS units for
4. We have Andy’s top tips - both Garmin and SatMap
5. And then finally we will announce the winner of last months podcast
1. Garmin’s GPSMAP66s – at last!
Last week Tom, from Garmin sales came and spent 24 hours with us and he brought with him the new GPSMAP66s from Garmin.
Here is our chat with him.
2. TOPO PRO mapping – to route or not to route
I know we have mentioned it in past Podcasts but we are still getting a number of questions over the phone regarding the TOPO PRO mapping from Garmin.
It is a little confusing I think it is the ‘TOPO’ that is throwing people.
So Andy, what is it?
1. OS mapping, not TOPO mapping (e.g. Topo Light, Topo Active)
2. It has turn by turn off road data within National Parks
3. You can get both 1:50k and 1:25k in the TOPO PRO versions
To find out more about the Garmin GPS units please go to our website – gpstarining.co.uk – click on – gps store – then choose the category you want on the left-hand side – 1:50k, 1:25k
3 – Some common activities and less common activities that people are using GPS units for
As you will be aware most of the GPS units we sell and train people to use are used for walking and cycling but what other activities are people using them for?
- Horse Riding
- Sea Kayaking
- Skiing
- Trail Riders, we have talked about this in a past podcast
- Surveys (wildlife, surveys for work)
- Geocaching, we have had Pete Mason, from the Podcach show on a past podcast – Episode 4
- Mountaineering
4. Andy’s Top Tips
Andrew Wallington has kindly written to us with his top tip –
Good Morning,
First of all thank you for your podcasts, site information and videos.
I have only been walking and hiking for the past 2 years and being of "mature years" I have a lot to learn.
I learn a lot from Andy's top tips and would like to add my own.
My route this week was about 25 miles in mid-Wales which I intended to do over 2 days but having completed 13 miles and getting to the bus stop for my return an hour early I decided to complete the whole walk that day. The weather was great and I felt capable of finishing even though I have never walked this far in one go.
Sunset was due at 18.30 which gave me time to finish in daylight I thought.
- I had not taken fatigue into account.
A bright clear day started to cloud over so reducing light
My Satmap was getting low on battery as the route required me to constantly check my position. I did not have a power back up as I intended to finish by midafternoon.
I did not have a torch for the same reason.
The last half mile was downhill through a very thick wood so there was little or no light in places even though there was light outside. This was not good for trip hazards.

I had my hands on a pre-production model back in July and we have two days with Garmin and a GPSMAP66s at the end of the month so we will be able to give it a full review in next months podcast, but before then Andy what are the headlines of this new unit from Garmin and what are the differences compared to the GPSMAP64s?

It's our 12th podcast, we did our first ever GPS Training Podcast in September last year so its nearly at our 1st birthday, maybe we can something a bit different next month.
Then the following month, October, we first streamed it live in Facebook.
Since that first month it, hopefully, it has improved, we have had plenty of good GPS chat and some great guests such as
Tom from Garmin, who has been on twice
Ross from SatMap
Pete from the Podcach show, I actually met Pete last week at the Mega GeoCaching event in Yorkshire, he bought a new GPS unit from us
Mike, the walking Englishman
and of course, Duncan, the Scottish guy who has built his own rowing boat and is rowing across the Atlantic and as of Thursday he is half way so he’s going well. Duncan has got one of our Garmin inReaches with him and if you get our Friday newsletter you will have been able to track him live online.
Let's hope over the coming year we can continue to get some great guests on.
In today’s podcast, we are going to look at the following –
1. We will look at the new Garmin Fenix 5s plus, the smaller brother/ sister of the 5 plus that we talked about in last months Podcast
2. We will chat over what motorbike ‘trail riders’ need to navigate along ‘green lanes’ both in the UK and beyond
3. We have Andy’s top tips - both Garmin and SatMap
4. If you get our weekly newsletter you will see this week I asked if anybody wanted anything covered in this month’s Podcast.
On the back of this request, we got lots of ‘support’ questions of how to do this/ that etc so this month, for one month only, we are going to have a ‘Ask Andy’ when I will ask Andy some of these technical/ support questions that we received this week.
5. And then finally we are having our first ever GPS Training competition, but you will have to wait until the end of the Podcast to see what you can win
1. Garmin’s new Fenix 5s plus

1. We have an interview with Duncan Hutchison, the Scottish guy who has built his own boat and is rowing across the Atlantic, a great story.
2. I know we covered it in last months Podcast but we again chat over the Garmin inReach mini, as we can’t keep them in stock!
3. We look at the new Spot X – 2-way satellite messenger. Not yet available in the UK but is in the US
4. Andy’s top tips – both SatMap and Garmin
5. Some new videos and free webinar
1. Duncanadrift
Earlier this week I spoke to Duncan Hutchinson and talked through his epic journey so far on his cross Atlantic adventure.
I am not going to ruin the interview so here we go
You can find out more about Duncan’s epic journey –
Facebook – Just search for Duncanadrift
Website – Duncanadrift.com
Duncan's Just Giving page (water aid) - more here
Track Duncan live (via a Garmin inReach) - here
And keep your eyes open for the GPS Training logo on his boat
2 – inReach Mini
1. What a response we have had to the inReach Mini.
2. I know we covered this in depth in last month’s Podcast but quickly Andy can you give a quick overview of what the inReach is?
3. Early next week there will be a software update so you can control it from your Fenix 5/ 5x watch, currently this is just beta but full version will be out next week, I know we have been selling many alongside Fenix watches what are the benefits of this?
4. We seem to keep the black ones in stock (just about) but the orange ones now have a delivery date of the 19th June and we have a waiting list and I must add we are also on that waiting list as we are going to keep one so we can do some videos and step by step guides for the online resource.
If you want to find out more about this and all the Garmin inreach products go to – GPS Training.co.uk – click on GPS Store – and click on Garmin inReach – satellite communicators on the left hand side
3 – The new Spot X - 2-Way Satellite Messenger
1. This is the first ‘two way’ communicator from Spot, it’s currently just available in the states but it will be hitting the UK market in TBC
2. Have you seen it Andy, I could not even find anything on YouTube which is amazing seeing you can buy it in the states already?
3. Looking at pictures of it, it seems very similar than the inReach mini but it has a full QWERT keyboard, it reminds me of my old Blackberry phone, do you remember this good old days?
4. Globalstar not the Iridium that Garmin inReach products use – Low orbit system
5. Some people are mentioning in their reviews - Globalstar system would only accept ONE message every twenty to thirty minutes

So, without further ado let’s get on with today’s podcast ……
In today’s podcast we are going to look at the following –
1. We take the first look at the new Garmin InReach mini
2. Then we will look at Open Street Mapping and other mapping options when going overseas
3. We look at the new (Beta) version of Xpedition2 from SatMap – for both Mac and PC users
4. Andy’s top tips – both SatMap and Garmin
5. And then finally we look at both Routes and tracks
1. Garmin’s new inReach Mini
This week Garmin launched the all-new inReach Mini, this is the small brother/ sister of the Garmin inReach SE+ and the inReach Explorer units.
I must stress that at this moment of time we have not yet had our hands on one, we have some ordered and are hoping they will be in stock early next week, but we have been aware about this product for some time now.
On our fourth Podcast, in December last year we did an in-depth review of the inReach SE+ and inReach Explorer as our ‘sister’ business, Shepherds Walks Holidays uses inReach products on their walking holidays.
So Andy, can you give us a quick overview of both these units that have been with us for some time now.
- Two-way satellite communication
- You need a contract to get a Garmin inReach to work (like a mobile phone contract) and these start from £12.99/month but a little more for a more usable contract. I think we pay around £25.00/ month which is a good mid-range contract.
- Contracts vary according to number of Text messages you want to send each months and if your tracking points are included in the contract or not. The interesting thing is that all pre-set messages are unlimited and also the SOS button works on whatever contract you are on.
- They offer live tracking, the ability to send text messages, pre-set messages and they have a SOS button
- It can also be used as a GPS navigator, but I personally think it does not replace a standalone GPS navigational unit.
The SOS button, what happens if you press that?
- It notifies GEOS Worldwide, LTD is an independent emergency response organization headquartered outside of Houston, Texas. Their high-tech underground facility is the central component in their International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC). That facet of their operation is somewhat self-explanatory. When GEOS receives a distress call, their IERCC department swings into action to coordinate an immediate and appropriate response.
- GEOS also maintains a large network of offices around the globe in Perth, Marrakech, Paris, London, New York, San Jose, and Los Angeles.
So what is difference with the inReach Mini?
- Send and receive inReach messages through compatible Garmin devices, including connected wearables and handhelds
- Palm-sized satellite communicator for adventures where size and weight matter, hence the mini
If you want to find out more about this and all the Garmin inreach products go to – GPS Training.co.uk – click on GPS Store – and click on Garmin inReach – satellite communicators on the left-hand side
Open Street Mapping and other mapping options when going overseas
It’s that time of year, when many of our listeners will be heading overseas so what map options are available for both Garmin and SatMap GPS units
- After talking about the inReach products (not the mini I mu...Sat, 12 May 2018 - 33min - 14 - GPS Training Podcast – Episode 8
Welcome to this month’s GPS Training podcast, it’s our 8th episode.
1. Today we have Andy and myself, Jon
As always we are streaming it live on Facebook
So if you want to see what we all look like take a look at our Facebook page –
1. Just search for GPS Training on Facebook and don’t forget to ‘like’ our page.
2. As much of this month’s podcast has been prerecorded I would very much encourage anybody watching us live to download the entire podcast from their preferred podcast provider once it gets released early next week.
3. And fingers crossed for next month as we are also looking to stream us live on YouTube, you will have to watch this space.
So, without further ado let’s get on with today’s podcast ……
In today’s podcast, we are going to look at the following –
1. The all-new TOPO Great Britain PRO 1:50k mapping from Garmin which was launched last week.
2. SatMap Active 20 unit software update, we will look at what has changed.
3. Garmin BaseCamp – the update, and not before time.
4. Andy’s top tips – both SatMap and Garmin
5. And then finally we will look at our video top tips in the GPS Training online resource
Garmin’s new map card – TOPO Great Britain PRO 1:50k –
Last week, after a very long wait, but more about that later, Garmin launched their 2018 map card and as hoped it has been modelled on it’s more expensive 1:25k brother or sister, the TOPO Great Britain PRO 1:25k map set.
So Andy, what has changed with this new map card?
- 2018 update of Map set – Garmin update every four years as ¼ of the country is released by OS as an updated version.
- Turn by turn routing within National Parks, the true ‘hiking’ ‘activity’ or ‘routing’ option.
- Isle of Man now added
The famous, or infamous ‚ hiking option. The biggest mistake people make when setting up any GPS unit and now it gets a little more confusing.
In the past on the 1:50k map we use the direct routing, how do we set up a GPS unit to utilise the feature when you are within National Parks.
- Set activity/ Routing
- Set up a new profile so you can easily swap as you go in or out of a National Parks
We have a step by step video taking you through how to this on an Oregon 700/ 750 in our online resource – Go to – GPS Training.co.uk, login and then go to the Garmin Top Tips section
And now we can let the cat out of the bag regarding the development of this map card.
- We first received some pre-production cards late last year and we have been helping Garmin develop this product.
- Before everybody says – why did you not say everything – we have signed a nion discosure agreement with Garmin as we do get shown things well before it is announced to the public and press.
- I actually recorded a piece for the podcast between Christmas and New Year as at the time we all thought it was going to be released top market in January.
- It’s been fascinating to work with them.
If you want to find out more about this new map set and how it works go to – GPS Training.co.uk – click on reviews – and you will see an article - NEW 2018 Mapping now with Routable Trail Data within the National Parks
SatMap Active 20 unit software update
Active 20 - "Snap to Foot", Snap to Bike, Snap to Road routing in Routes Menu – Create new Route
- On an Active 20, with a Wi-Fi connection, you now have the ability on an Active 20 to create a "snap-to-track" route.
- Currently, this functionality is in "beta" testing mode - but as soon as it is fully tested and stable, it will be formally released.
- USES Open Source Data via SatMaps server hence may not snap on t...Sat, 14 Apr 2018 - 37min - 13 - GPS Training Podcast – Episode 7
In today’s podcast we are going to look at the following –
* We have an interview with Mike Brockhurst who runs the website the ‘walking Englishman’.
* After our chat with Mike we look at downloading the ‘GPX route files from his site’, don’t worry if that sounds like a foreign language, it will all be explained.
* Andy’s top tips – both SatMap and Garmin
* And then finally we will look ‘Mad March’, what’s it all about?
1. Our interview with Mike Brockhurst, the walking Englishman –
I recording this interview with Mike last week and it exceeded all expectation, he had been on my radar for a little time now but only when I interviewed him for the GPS Training Podcast I realised what a truly inspirational story he has.
2. GPX files, what are they and how do we get them on our GPS unit?
After my chat with Mike we really need to explore in depth the .gpx files that we referred to in the interview.
* What is a .gpx file?GPX is as a common GPS data format used by GPS Devices and many software applications. It can include waypoints, tracks, and routes.
* Are these compatible with any outdoor GPS device?Yes with all the makes that we sell e.g. Garmin, Satmap, Memory Map.
* What other file formats will people come across when looking for ‘routes’ (which could be tracks) when online? There are other formats eg kml google earth, .fit watches, look for .GPX file for GPS device
* So back to .gpx and the Walking Englishman website how do we get these onto our GPS unit, both Garmin and SatMap?Click on GPX Route file and look in your downloads for file, majority named as trackfile.gpx some are mane of walk.gpx, Import to basecamp then send to unit, satmap satsysnc or with new Active 20 copy and paste
* What other websites or places can we source these .gpx files from? Search internet some we use www.gps-routes.co.uk, www.walkhighlands.co.uk
* How will we know if these .gpx files are routes or tracks, perhaps we should first explain the difference between the two before you tell us how to work out which they are?Route something you plan in software, track normally a recording of where someone has walked, in Garmin basecamp footprint icon shows track, 3 boxes joined together shows Route, SatMap puts in Routes folder.
* How do can we check they are on your unit.Garmin Where to magnifying glass, Where to, Find search Routes or Tracks, SatMap Turn unit on / off Main Menu – Routes Menu
Any tips you have when downloading .gpx files and getting then on your GPS unit?
Garmin number of via points check in Basecamp -Direct Route 250, Track 10,0000 or Oregon 7** series 20,0000, SatMap does not have same stipulation but we do tend to try and stick to under 250 x points otherwise can be slow to load, different websites sometimes have their own instructions for download i.e. Right click save as, save link as, any issues with website itself contact website owner, create folder on desktop to save gpx downloads to
* Andy’s top tips
* Garmin – eTrex Touch, Oregon 7** series when changing batteries – turn off - change batteries – turn on – use where to magnifying glass to check still navigating route etc, from map page swipe up – satellite signal far left – press start to restart recording.
* SatMap – Charging Active 20, large capacity 5000mah recommend turn off when charging and use genuine plug in mains rather than pc, will charge quicker.
3. Our Mad March offers from GPS Training
What is Mad March?
* As Easter is traditionally the start of the walking season we have a different offer each week in the lead up to Easter.Fri, 09 Mar 2018 - 53min - 12 - GPS Training Podcast – Episode 6

2. Putting the Garmin TOPO PRO 1:25k through their paces.
3. Andy’s top tips
• Garmin – Sellotape over map card
• SatMap – Like computer check for updates - Update active 20 using Wifi – Added new search feature as primary screen - data set Mountains and Hills – video in Online resource latest update showing new feature Latest sw v3.11.671
Active 12 SatSync – Help Latest sw v3.0.10994
4. The big debate – Walking with your GPS as North up or Track up
Before we jump into this debate we need to clarify what the difference is.
- What is the difference?
- Can we change this setting on both Garmin and SatMap GPS units?
- Are there any battery save benefits from one or the other?
5. Free access to our online resource – for one month only

8. And finally, we will have a look at our courses we have coming up over the coming month
1. An in-depth look at Garmin inReach
1. What is the Garmin inReach, it’s not just a GPS unit is it?
• Two-way satellite communicator, using the Iridium satellites, the same as a Sat Phone uses.
• You can send both pre-set and text messages from the unit via satellites.
• It can also be used as a GPS navigator, but I personally think it does not replace a standalone GPS navigational unit.
• SOS button - GEOS Worldwide, LTD is an independent emergency response organization headquartered outside of Houston, Texas. Their high-tech underground facility is the central component in their International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC). That facet of their operation is somewhat self-explanatory. When GEOS receives a distress call, their IERCC department swings into action to coordinate an immediate and appropriate response. Sounds simple enough, but what does that actually mean?
• GEOS also maintains a large network of offices around the globe in Perth, Marrakech, Paris, London, New York, San Jose, and Los Angeles.
• You need a contract to get a Garmin inReach to work (like a mobile phone contract) and these start from £12.99/month but a little more for a more usable contract. I think we pay around £25.00/ month which is a good mid-range contract.
• Contracts vary according to number of Text messages you want to send each months and if your tracking points are included in the contract or not.Fri, 15 Dec 2017 - 58min - 9 - GPS Training Podcast – Episode 3

2. They really did take the market by storm and changed the Outdoor GPS market, what did Garmin bring to the ‘field’ in those early days.
• OS map on Outdoor GPS device
• Quality Colour Screen
• Great battery life
3. How have the SatMap units developed – SatMap Active 10, 12 and now 20
• Active 10 launched in 2007
• Active 12 launched in 2014, how was this different than the SatMap Active 10?
• Active 20 launched this year, 2017. This was a big change than the Active 10/12

So, without further ado let’s get on with today’s webinar ……
In today’s webinar we are going to look and chat over the following –
1. We will review the Garmin Fenix 5x multi activity GPS watch
2. Connect IQ Apps, what are they and what are the best apps?
3. Best top end Garmin GPS (what else could we look at with Tom sat between us)
4. Top tips – both SatMap and Garmin
5. The big debate – button or touchscreen GPS unit?
6. And finally, we will have a look at our courses we have coming up over the coming month
Chat over and review of the Garmin Fenix 5x multi activity GPS Watch
1. What is a multi-activity GPS watch?
2. Fenix 5x What activities would this really be suitable for?
Andy liked it for Road Cycling & Mountain Biking, although I am not a trail runner could see it being used for Trail Running – Bring Tom in with this
Now let’s get down to the watch -
1. It comes with colour maps pre-loaded for all of Europe Topo Active look good on the watch
2. Going through the menus for the first time it is clear to see this is very much a Multisport Watch, fitness / activity tracker, navigational device and smart watch all in one.
3. It has the standard features that we expect to see on a fitness tracker, measuring your daily steps, distances, calories, sleep pattern etc but also has a built-in wrist based heart monitor and a VO2Max Estimator feature to estimate the maximum volume of oxygen you can consume per minute, giving you an indication of your fitness level.
4. I found it easy to pair the watch with my smart phone using the Garmin connect app, with this app you can sync all your fitness data to review clearly on your phone, sync your trails that you have walked, cycled, ran etc and pairing the watch with your phone gives you the function to receive text message, email alerts and incoming phone call alerts from your mobile onto the screen of the watch.Sat, 14 Oct 2017 - 33min - 7 - GPS Training Podcast – Episode 1
