The King speaks with the Texas Renaissance Festival's new Director of Marketing, Todd Wold. The King explores in depth how a drummer from San Francisco ended up at the reins of the largest Renaissance Festival in the country and how all that connects to skiing?

Join The King as he speaks with Jon Coiner. Jon was one of the first artists George Coulam called upon to bring their wares to his newly created Minnesota Renaissance Festival. Soon George would open the Texas Renaissance Festival, and again he looked to Jon to display sell his amazing art. Jon has shown his wares at Renaissance festivals across the country. Jon has also spent time teaching, sharing his experiences and lifting up other artists across the globe ,who have gone on to be successful artists opened their own shops and businesses. Jon is always learning and expanding and at 82 he is no hurry to slow down- Huzzah!

Episode 57 focus is Rio Blue, this multi-talented performer gained his chops by traveling the United States learning from a variety of artists, performers, musicians, actors, craftsmen, and his beloved guru. His love of art, music, poetry, and life has been his bridge from a quiet town in the desert of Chile to traveling the United performers States and performing at renaissance festivals for over 50 years. He has been a carpenter, cook, puppeteer, stilt walker, musician, artist, booth owner, community activist and more. Folks recognize him by his friendly smile and joyful laugh. Rio is a father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He resides in Texas with his love and wife, the beautiful Mary.

The King speaks with Judge and Christine about being a food vendor at TRF. Mr Edwards brought Coach's Catering came to TRF nearly 5 decades ago, today his son, Judge, continues growing his families' legacy into the 21st century.

Phil and Rhonni worked across the country designing, building booths for other folks until they started their own business and designed and built own their booths and businesses. The King meets with Matt and Andree Basse to discuss how they became part of the Texas Renaissance Festival. How one visit set Matt on the path to managing and eventually owning two major food areas at TRF. She shares how he and Andree met, married and made two families one. They attribute their success to there family, friends, and one big beast of a man, Joe Aronson, who was Matt's friend, mentor and inspiration. 

We conclude our discussion talking about a devastating fire that nearly took away everything and how like a Phoenix they have risen back up from the ashes to rebuild.

On this episode, TRF's Queen Quintessence joins the King on, Hear ye, hear ye; A TX-style Renaissance Podcast, to share her story about becoming the Queen of the Texas Renaissance Festival for over two decades. She talks about her beginnings in New Mexico and hw she ended up working around the globe. Mother, athlete, geologist software specialist, grandmother and more. Saying goodbye to an incredible TRF 2021

The 2021 Texas Renaissance Festival was extremely successful and Darla is incredibly proud of the many vendors that met and exceeded their sales goals. With pandemic concerts still heightened, we were able to pull off a safe festival with many exciting attractions and new additions that we wouldn’t have been able to pull off without the support of our many amazing patrons and our hardworking staff.

Going through the selections process (Tiffany)  

Our ambassadors are a group of incredibly dedicated volunteers that devote hours of their lives to TRF, no matter what time of year it is. With the importance they hold not only to us, but to our community as well, each ambassador goes through an application and selection process, which Tiffany now gets to have an impactful role in as our new coordinator.

As a new addition to our TRF family, Tiffany is incredibly excited to take on a leadership role in an amazing group of passionate volunteers. From selecting ambassadors to coordinating events, she loves that her and her marketing team (Marketing Refresh) can help ambassadors get the word out about TRF and the incredible things we do for our community.

Gathering new patrons through events (Brandy)    

After four years of being an ambassador, Brandy is incredibly knowledgeable about everything ambassadors get to do for our festival and the community we are dedicated to helping. From showing up at community events to organizing charitable drives to help those in need, ambassadors like Brandy tell new people about us all the time, all year round.  

“We all just love it and so anywhere we go, we’re all wearing our shirts and talking about it.” 

Giving back to the community in a big way (Brandy) 

TRF is so important to Brandy because of the opportunity that it provides her to be involved in such an inclusive environment. One of Brandy’s passions as a teacher certified in ASL is helping the hard of hearing and deaf community participate in festival events through organizations like ASL Faires TX.

Martha grew up playing musical instruments from a young age, including receiving private piano lessons at the age of 5, and she always had a passion for making music. Influenced by dreams she was having and the love of harpist Alan Stivell, Martha purchased a harp at the age of 21 with the help of a few generous friends and embarked on what would become her future career. Although she studied Archaeology at Oxford College in her youth, she felt the calling to become a part of renaissance festivals and has since spent decades of her career delighting patrons with song.

Promoting health and safety 

As a community, renaissance festival workers often include artisans and entrepreneurs who may not have the same insurance coverages, income consistencies, or healthcare opportunities as those working in other fields. With differences in working seasons, locations, and occupations, RESCU works with renaissance employees to promote healthy lifestyles, encourage enrolling in government services, and open opportunities for medical bill assistance.  

“Keeping everyone well within that community is important to keep the magic continuing.” 

Protecting renaissance employees 

Every year, RESCU has provided thousands of dollars worth of aid and assistance to renaissance workers in need. This need looks different for everyone, and Danielle emphasizes that so many different employees qualify for help if they need it. Through online forms as well as over the phone, RESCU has worked with craftsmen and artisans, performers and vendors all over the country, helping them learn how to help themselves. 

“Anyone who has ever been involved with renaissance festivals is eligible for some sort of help from the RESCU foundation.” 

Providing necessary services, despite challenges 

With situations such as COVID, Danielle wants the community to know that RESCU is still here to help and still needs help from their generous volunteers and donors nationwide. From COVID testing to contraception, pro-bono medical appointments to prescription aid, so many people benefit from what the hardworking team at RESCU provides, and our team at the Texas Renaissance Festival strongly encourages you to lend them a helping hand if you can.

Daphne, the Washing Well Wench, stops by to say hello to the King, introduce her many identical cousins, and teach us all a little bit about laundry. We're also joined by Thomas Wood, the daring (and sometimes dangerous!) pyro-juggler of the Texas Renaissance Festival. As a comedian, performer, juggler, and fire-eater, Thomas visits us on this fine day in Todd Mission to discuss his own history of performing and how he’s lit his own fire during these uncertain times.

On this special Christmas edition of Hear Ye, Hear Ye!, we welcome Jim Hancock, the Burly Minstrel of the Texas Renaissance Festival, to the show! With years of experience in music and his own Christmas band, Jim delights us with stories and songs that are sure to spread some holiday cheer to our listeners. 

Continuing to do multiple festivals each year

As a traveling musician, Jim spends his normal festival season delighting crowds at 5 different renaissance festivals. Since the ‘80s, Jim has heard the call to strike up the band and to spread his love of renaissance music and centuries-old songs to thousands of people across the country every single year. 

“There are great musicians at every festival I do, and that’s why I keep doing it.”

Cherishing all forms of music and musicians

Although Jim has been a musician since childhood and has studied music in school, his primary love for performing comes from the imperfect, improvisational aspects. Instead of emphasizing perfection and professional training, Jim believes that musicians should be caring more about the environments and emotions they create with the music they perform. 

“It’s not about being perfect, it’s about being expressive and communicating.”

Capitalizing on his recording abilities

Affected by the pandemic as a musician, Jim had a lot of time on his hands this year and was able to embark on creating his own recording studio in his house. With experience in location recording and a passion for elevating the sounds of his fellow musicians, Jim is excited with this new opportunity to make music an even bigger part of his life.

Richard Meritzer, owner of TRF’s Escape Room and leader of the improv troupe Sound & Fury, joins us this week on Hear Ye, Hear Ye! to share the latest festival tales. Richard takes his time with us to talk about performing, travelling, and escaping from a fantastical room of his own amazing creation. Hear Ye, Hear Ye! gets the honor of connecting once again this week with our Wonderpuppy Pirate, Chip Ware. Chip has continued to wander the campgrounds, cataloging the various sounds he has been hearing, trying new treats, and making so many new friends from a safe distance.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye! welcomes a new and exciting guest this week: Louie Migliaccio, owner of the Dragon Slayer, Chronos, and Wyrmwood. In this exclusive interview with one of our most popular vendors, Louie talks about souvenir innovations, absinthe tastings, and all things new and exciting in this year's festival.

Madam of Matrimony and Lady of All Occasions, Vee Brauner. As our Wedding Manager & Coordinator, Vee oversees all the weddings and parties that occur all festival long, from last-minute ceremonies to extravagant receptions.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye! is happy to welcome back Lady Jennifer Pierce to the show this week for an update regarding the many vendors that make up our 2020 festival. Jennifer informs us of a noteworthy cause to donate to, a selection of shops to see and keeps us on our toes with the many new changes taking place this year.

As we kick off our 2020 season, Hear Ye, Hear Ye! is joined again by Chip Ware, better known as The Wonder Puppy Pirate! Providing us with an update on how things are going with the latest and safest festival events, Chip takes this time to reflect on what’s occurred so far as well as tell us about what he’s most looking forward to this festival.

Just days away from our 2020 Texas Renaissance Festival, we’re joined by the Matron of Education, Kim Bryant. Kim coordinates our School Days events, and she comes to us on this fine day to discuss the many changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although many of the School Days festivities cannot happen on our festival grounds, Kim keeps us updated with the ways in which teachers and parents can still engage their children in our renaissance world at a safe distance.  

With this year’s Texas Renaissance Festival right around the corner, we take an amazing opportunity this week to meet up with Rhonnie Debose, the owner of two amazing food booths at our festival, The Queen’s Pantry and Tea & Strumpets. Rhonnie heads into her 14th season here with us and she has a great deal of knowledge to share about our fantastic festival and all the fine food served throughout.  

As our 2020 season of the Texas Renaissance Festival nears, we meet up with one of our most recently knighted members of our cast and crew, Chip Ware. You can find Chip galavanting about the festival and campgrounds each year as an Ambassador Guide Coordinator under the special name of Rok, The Wonderpuppy Pirate.

Instead, we found ourselves interrupted by...the Mud Man, Billy Billy vonBilly, who claims to be our King of Fantasy and tells us incredible stories of tasteless acts, artistic ingenuity, and the not-so-exact science of mud-making.

The Texas Renaissance Festival strives to improve every single season and set goals that push each attraction within our festival to new heights. To do this best, we combine steadfast passion with fresh faces and ideas, encouraging anyone from anywhere to pitch in and get involved.  

We catch up with our renaissance festival regulars this week as we continue discussing all the latest happenings in Todd Mission and our efforts to get ready for this year’s Texas Renaissance Festival season. We continue to discuss the inner workings of the festival, the new and exciting changes happening this year, and the extra safety precautions being taken during this time.

We meet with our familiar friendly faces of the festival to discuss the upcoming changes and late-stage rehearsals that are being done around Todd Mission prior to this year’s festival. Although we’re living in a time very different from our 16th Century festival setting, we’re excited to bring our festival to life and provide our patrons with a fun and safe experience.

Finding optimism 

Although the current state of the pandemic has created challenges for the upcoming festival, we are all working together to take it in stride. With adapted safety measures and a new approach to auditions, even the off-season of the festival is getting a makeover so that everything runs as smoothly as it has ever run here in Todd Mission.

Planning ahead 

Whether you’re going to be setting up at the campground or marrying your betrothed at one of our coveted event areas, the renaissance festival runs best when plans are made in advance and personalized to each guest and patron. Although we pride ourselves on being able to think on our feet and create experiences on a whim, making plans with us in the months prior to the festival ensures a perfect moment that will live on in your memories for years to come.

With everything themed for an older time, it may be hard for everyone to understand just how much the Texas Renaissance Festival has to operate with forethought and professionalism. Each member of our cast and crew is specifically hired based on their skill level and consideration for what the festival represents and how we need to operate to make it genuinely enjoyable and educational for guests of all ages.

Engaging passions 

Many of the current employees of the Texas Renaissance Festival have been involved with the festival in some capacity for several years. For some, it may be decades, for others, it may just be a few passionate years. Either way, the passion in each of them shines through in all that they do. Through incorporating their own craftsman endeavors and career aspirations into the work that they do with the festival, the environment in Todd Mission is always bustling with something wonderful and new from the times of old.

Expanding programs

As the festival grows, so do the programs available for our patrons to enjoy! From humble beginnings on just a few acres of land, our fine festival has turned into a massive event filled with fun for the entire family and hundreds of events and vendors to tickle any fancy. With more people than ever to cater to, we’ve been able to grow our staff to incorporate a wide variety of characters to fulfill all the roles we could ever need, from wedding planners to educators, campground workers to entertainment directors. 

Encountering changes 

Just like with any job, the festival certainly provides its staff with obstacles to overcome and problems to solve. Thankfully, we’re a tight-knit crew of loyal subjects ready to take up our swords and tackle any task to insure that the festival is a safe, stupendous place for everyone. Each member of our staff has taken their own quest to get to where they are today, and they’re able to use those experiences to turn fresh insights into positive changes.
