From a young age, Martha embarked on a quest for inner peace, driven by the profound loss of her father. Join me, Jason LaChance host of the @KnockinDoorzDown certified addiction recovery coach, and mental health advocate for my sit down with my father Rene LaChance. This conversation was recorded around Christmas of 2022. It is by far the most personal and most difficult conversation I have ever had on the podcast. Recently celebrating 3 years of continual sobriety I finally felt in a place to be able to share this episode. His mother and father both had various issues around codependency and sexual addiction and his mother struggled with medication. My dad lost his brother, my uncle, due to overmedicating and passing out, his lit cigarette caught his home on fire. My dad and my mom married when he was only 17, and eventually, when his brain matured around 26, issues started to arise. Now sober for over 20 years my dad wanted to share his journey offering hope to others that they can overcome whatever adversity they've faced. We discuss the following and more. Mon, 22 May 2023 - 174 - Mayra Dias Gomes | Addiction To Sobriety, Trauma Led To Seeking Validation, The NWA & Billy Corgan
Why did I want to talk with Mayra Dias Gomes, AKA May Valentine in the Nation Wrestling Alliance? It is how she has recently utilized her notoriety to share her addiction and trauma recovery to inspire others and let them know they're not alone. Mayra has had a stellar career thus far. She became a best-selling author at the age of 17 in her Native Country of Brazil. She is the oldest daughter of acclaimed playwright Dias Gomes and actress Bernadeth Lyzio. She was encouraged by her family to express herself artistically, sadly at the age of 11, she'd experience her first major trauma when her father was killed in a car accident. We talk about how this trauma led her down the path of substance use and a string of bad relationships that included her being raped and everyone blaming her for the occurrence. Mayra shares that she found a book on illicit drugs and set off to try them all. We talk about the twists and turns of her life that included a career in TV music journalism, a multi-time published author, and a vast modeling career, in which she became the February cover and centerfold of Playboy Denmark. Mayra is open about her transgressions, as well as the moment over 3 years ago while training to be a professional wrestler when she knew it was time to put the bottle down as her anxiety was out of control. We also talk about how her past appearance in a Smashing Pumpkins music video, and Billy Corgan Front Man for the Smashing Pumpkins who owns the NWA, National Wrestling Alliance reached out to her, and the character of May Valentine was born. Mon, 15 May 2023 - 173 - Kim Bellas | Sober Is The New Cool, Ditching The Mom Wine Club, Parent Of An Ill Child & Hypocrisy
Why did I want to talk with Kim Bellas of Sober Is The Cool? In 2013, her 15 -year-old started having seizures. Like most teenagers, he enjoyed going to parties and socializing. A significant aspect of these parties was the consumption of alcohol, and her son was unable to drink due to his seizures. As a mother, it was instinctive for her to make him happy by assuring him that alcohol wasn't necessary for him to enjoy himself. It IMMEDIATELY dawned on Kim how hypocritical she was being as she found herself frequently drinking wine. To prove a point to her son, she stopped drinking for 3 months. The time went by quicker than she anticipated and she decided to remain sober for another 3 months. Following 6 months of sobriety, Kim found herself happier than she had been in a while. What started as an example for her son became something Kim decided to commit to for her son and herself. It's now 2023, and Kim is proudly sober for 10 years. Sobriety has changed Kim's outlook on life for the better and has improved both her physical and mental well-being. Her goal is to demonstrate that a SOBER LIFE is an exhilarating one, and anyone can reap the benefits. This is Kim Bellas Knockin' Doorz Down. Mon, 08 May 2023 - 172 - Gene Bowen & Jack Bookbinder | Using Their Adverse Time To Mentoring The Youth With Road Recovery
Why did I want to talk with Gene Bowen & Jack Bookbinder? I am blown away by the work they and their Road Recovery staff do to mentor youth facing life challenges such as drugs, gangs, violence, abusive home environments, and economic challenges. Gene & Jack met through their work in the music industry and both worked with the late Jack Buckley who lost his life in a drowning accident. Gene & Jack have both faced their own challenges, notably, Gene speaks openly about his past addiction issues, and Jack has struggled with diabetes for many years. They share how learning to develop a better way of living led to the creation of Road Recovery. Road Recovery is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping young people battle adversities and faces their struggles while teaching them comprehensive life skills. The organization started from The Golden Promise passage written and read by Mary Guibert, Jeff Buckley’s mother at his memorial. From that promise, in 1998 Mary Guibert made a pledge that she would help launch and develop Road Recovery with its founders Gene Bowen (Buckley’s tour manager) and Jack Bookbinder (formerly part of Buckley’s artist management team). Mentored by entertainment industry professionals who have confronted similar life struggles, and with support from the mental health field, Road Recovery’s action-driven programs offer “all access” opportunities for young people to engage in the process of creating, planning, and presenting their own live performance events and studio recording projects. Gene and Jack have been running Road Recovery ever since and the organization is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year. Mon, 01 May 2023 - 171 - Stevie Joffe | Mental Health Management For Actor/Musician, Sober Curious & The Birds Of Bellwoods
Why did I want to talk with Stevie Joffe? I came across Stevie's band The Birds Of Bellwoods, and their new album Everything You Want. I was enthralled by the lyrics on the album that dealt with a lot of mental health-related issues. Stephen Joffe is an actor best known for his work in Overruled! (2009), Alias Grace (2017), and Frequency (2000). He was born in Toronto and graduated from the National Theatre School of Canada in 2012. Stephen is the lead singer of the Toronto-based alternative rock band Birds of Bellwoods. Stevie and I shared an amazing conversation that includes talking about the various lyrical themes on the album. How being a touring band can be a gift and a curse on one's mental health. We also discuss how Stevie has gone through periods of contemplating his own substance use and foresees that his life may benefit from total sobriety. Mon, 24 Apr 2023 - 170 - Ben Tuff | Swim Tuff: How I Swam My Way Out Of The Bottle. From Alcoholic To Sober Ultra Swimmer
Why did I want to talk with Ultra Swimmer Ben Tuff? Ben's story of addiction recovery caught my attention when I came upon the trailer for his upcoming documentary Swim Tuff. On April 21, 2012, Ben Tuff chose a life of sobriety to transform his own existence and to help inspire others to make this life-altering choice when alcoholism has taken over. After choosing a life of sobriety, he decided to take up swimming for the first time in his life and appreciated the peace and mindfulness it brought to him. Ten years later, on July 22, 2022, Ben set off to become the first person to swim the length of Narragansett Bay from Providence, RI to Jamestown, RI to raise money for the environmental non-profit Clean Ocean Access which he's already raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for. We discuss how Ben's alcohol recovery journey helped him develop the discipline and drive to complete such tests of endurance. We also talk about his childhood when alcohol was often ever-present in his home and family gathers as well as his rock bottom and solutions he's found to maintain his sobriety. Plus, how the documentary came about and how he's dedicated his life to helping others, especially the youth. As of the release of this episode of Knockin' Doorz Down, Ben is coming up on 11 years sober. This is Ben Tuff Knockin' Doorz Down. Mon, 17 Apr 2023 - 169 - Jeremy Jackson | Solution Based Mindset, Breath Work, Meditation, Spiritual Teachings & Living
Why did I want to talk with Jeremy Jackson, professionally most known for his role as Hobie Buchannon on Baywatch? I stumbled upon an interview with Jeremy in which he described a life that included being on the #1 TV show in the world, performing sold-out concerts opening for David Hasselhoff, dating Playboy Playmates, and having a ton of money and yet being completely empty inside and feelings alone. Jeremy like many of his child actor peers would succumb to a life of excess, legal and financial troubles, and subsequential addiction. Jeremy and I discuss the solutions he found in his recovery and how he is being of service to others in sharing the wisdom he's learned during his sobriety. This includes breath work, meditation, and a variety of spiritual teachings that he's used to progress in his own life and mentor others. This is Jeremy Jackson Knockin' Doorz Down. Sun, 12 Mar 2023 - 164 - Mike Gibson | From NFL Standout To Addiction, Finding A Higher Power, Sobriety & Spreading Hope
Why did Jason LaChance want to talk with Mike Gibson the 6-year NFL veteran? Despite Mike's success on the Grid Iron, he had succumbed to addiction becoming a full-blown heroin and methamphetamine addict. After several treatment facilities, Mike had a spiritual awakening, worked a 12-step program, and has had long-term sobriety. Mike was born and raised in Napa, Ca. Went to college at UC Berkeley where he played football. Mike was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2008 and played 6 years in the NFL. He became addicted to prescription pain medication in his 3rd year after a couple of injuries. Upon retiring from the NFL Mike was a sheriff in Napa County while still abusing OxyContin and Adderall. He was the class president of his police academy. He was asked to resign after an incident where he was caught with both substances in his vehicle. Mike went to treatment and learned about heroin and meth. After having been to treatment 6 times. Mike went to his last treatment completely broke having lost everything. Finally, after finding a higher power and completing the 12 steps his sobriety gained traction and Mike is still clean and sober today. Mike has worked in treatment for the last 5 years and has aspirations of owning his own facility one day. This is Mike Gibson Knockin' Doorz Down. Mon, 06 Mar 2023 - 163 - Lil Dallas | From Prison To Youth Mentor On Mental Health & Addiction Issues & Rapper
Why did Jason LaChance want to talk with Lil Dallas? He was highly fascinated with how Dallas, after being incarcerated at 16 years of age for over a decade has not only dedicated himself to his art but speaking with youth about mental health and addiction issues. Dallas Roquemore AKA Lil Dallas is 27 years old and has been incarcerated since he was 16 years old, he was released from prison on march 13th 2022. Dallas grew up alongside famous rapper Mozzy, they were incredibly close as children and would rap together as they lived in the same neighborhood. When Dallas wasn’t making music he was establishing himself as one of the most recognized gang members in his city. At 16 Dallas had made enough bad choices to land himself in Federal prison. While in prison Dallas met his wife and they got married in the Salinas Valley State Prison. While completing his time he realized that the only reason he and his community committed themselves to a life of Gang conflict was that that was the way they were brought up. Gangs and drugs were normalized and easily accessible. He realized all the bad decisions he made were because he was under the influence, and Dallas decided to put his faith in his passions and family. As soon as he was released he began working with Healthy Life Recovery to tell his story and hopefully inspire others to make better choices. First-hand experience carries a lot of weight and Dalllas carries his stories to adults and children who also grew up in environments around gangs and drugs. Dallas works with Healthy Life Recovery and is also pursuing his rap career, his first mixtape “finally free” which was just released on September 16th. If he hadn’t gone to prison Dallas could have risen to stardom alongside his childhood friend Mozzy. Now Dallas is focused on bettering his career and the world. Sun, 05 Feb 2023 - 158 - Clayton English & Greg Glod | The War On Drugs & Addiction A Mental Health Issue Not Judicial
Why did I want to talk with Clayton English and Greg Glod? They're the hosts of The War on Drugs Podcast. Clayton English is an award-winning comedian who took home the win on Last Comic Standing, and Greg Glod, a Criminal Justice Fellow for Americans for Prosperity. We talk about everything from addiction being a mental health issue and not a judicial issue, the racial stereotypes associated with certain illegal drugs, and the criminal penalties as well. As well we discuss the personal reasons why they wanted to do the podcast, plus we find a way to have a lot of laughs. Lava for Good’s The War on Drugs examines the actual cost of five decades of policy, policing, and persecution. The War on Drugs was never really about drugs; it was about control, and the series aims to expose this, shining a spotlight on how this so-called “war” impacts every aspect of our lives in ways both seen and unseen. The podcast will explore the politicization of public health policy; systemic racism and classism in the legislation and administration of criminal law; and how decriminalization and other alternatives could bring this fruitless “war” to an end. Why did I want to talk with Brandon Turner? Brandon Turner is a skateboard prodigy and addiction recovery coach, who is proving that age doesn't have to slow you down; it can actually make you better. He also just broke a skating record, completing his biggest switch hardflip down Wallenberg at the age of 39. Brandon and I talk about skate culture, the upsides, the downsides, and why he's chosen to dedicate his life to helping others within the skate community, all while bucking the long-held notion that skaters retire or slowly disappear after the age of 30. He shares how his unresolved childhood trauma which included finding out that who he thought was his mom, was his grandma and who he thought was his sister is his mom. This led to Brandon drowning out the emotional pain with alcohol and other substances. Eventually landing Brandon in prison. Brandon Turner skateboarded with heavy hitters like Andrew Reynolds, Elissa Steamer, and Arto Saari who have all opened up about their addiction struggles. Many veterans with similar experiences are now using their passion for skateboarding as a point of reference for a more sober approach to life. This is Brandon Turner Knockin' Doorz Down. Sun, 20 Nov 2022 - 147 - Daniel Hearn | Being Of Service, Stepping Outside The Comfort Of Recovery Groups & Hard Knox Talk
Why did I want to talk with Daniel Hearn on the Knockin' Doorz Down podcast? I am your host Jason LaChance, and I spoke with Daniel Hearn because we share a mutual passion for ending the stigma around addiction recovery and those suffering from mental health issues. Daniel is an active member of the addiction recovery community and a loud voice to end the stigma so that no one thinks they have to suffer in silence. The Hard Knox Talks team prides itself in raising awareness around Substance Use Disorders and Mental Illness. They have found that recognizing the unmanageability of our thoughts and actions is often the first step toward recovery. The lived experience brought them to this point. Daniel Hearn has himself been walking the road to recovery for several years. His vision is to help those who would decide to walk that path if the resources were available. That's why they're here. To give voice to those silenced by stigma—expected to act appropriately while in the grips of insanity. They are here to help those who are lost as we once were, to grow as we are, and to show the world that the lie is dead. We do recover. This is Daniel Hearn in his own words on Knockin' Doorz Down. Sun, 13 Nov 2022 - 146 - Kalan Kellerhals | From Strict Religious Upbringing To Opioid and Heroine Addiction, To Recovery & Green Thumb Naturals
Why did I want to talk with Kalan Kellerhals on the Knockin' Doorz Down podcast? I am your host Jason LaChance, and I spoke with Kalan because I was fascinated with his recovery path and the depths his addiction took him. We discuss his strict religious upbringing, how he felt sheltered and how the path that he was told to walk didn't leave him with the purpose he was told it would fulfill. With a familiar story of feeling like an outsider that leads him to the depths of despair in his full-blown opioid and heroin addiction to meeting his wife and finding a recovery path that has taken him to a life of purpose. Kalan's path is nonconventional, and not for everyone, but I wanted to speak with someone who took a nontraditional approach to recovery. We also talk about how the musician Jelly Roll has greatly inspired him. Kalan and his wife started Green Thumb Naturals. He say's, "More than likely I’m a lot like you…I have chronic pain as well as PTSD and severe anxiety. My doctors had me on a steady regimen of narcotic opioids and benzodiazepines to cope with the severe pain and anxiety." Although these drugs relieved physical pain, they left him depressed, lethargic, and always wanting more…Because the pain never truly went away. So, he started taking more. The more he took, the worse his depression and outlook on life became. He remembers thinking some horrible thoughts in those times of hopelessness and anguish. He recalls weeping for hours and crying out to his wife asking “Why does it have to be like this?” or “Things are never gonna get better!” It was in those hours of despair that Kalan decided he wanted to take his life back. He swapped his prescription meds for some CBD capsules and noticed nearly immediate pain relief. Not only did his pain levels change, but his outlook on life began to change in drastic ways. Not only did CBD help him step away from narcotic pharmaceuticals, but it also helped him quit drinking. This is when Greenthumb Naturals was born, with a desire to provide their products at an affordable price to those seeking the same relief and growth that he found. Kalan says, "we truly want to help people, and our customers can feel that love. We have a huge heart for our veterans, and donate to many vets each month at our local veteran’s meeting – it’s the highlight of my month! We are also proud to be helping many cancer patients with the side effects of treatment or with the pain and nausea that comes with the disease. To do what I’m doing for a living is truly a dream come true. Believe me, when I say – we’re just getting started!" This is Kalan KellerHals in his own words on Knockin' Doorz Down. Sun, 23 Oct 2022 - 143 - Jewels | Author Of ’The Making Of A Woman’, Sobriety, From Sexual Trauma To Liberation & Self Love
Why did I want to talk with Jewels on the Knockin' Doorz Down podcast? I am your host Jason LaChance, and I spoke with Jewels because I was absolutely interested in her sobriety journey and why she wrote her book 'The Making Of A Woman'. Trigger warning, if you are in recovery for sex and love addiction this may be a conversation that challenges your sobriety. I personally found Jewels' book, fascinating and it led to asking myself many introspective questions about trauma, boundaries, sexual expression, and contribution to the recovery community. THE MAKING OF A WOMAN is the compelling autobiography of a dynamic female who refused to bow down to the circumstances of her birth. With a prevailing sense of self and survival, Jewels fought a hardscrabble war against the forces and people that populated her life in a way that often crushes others. Jewels is an award-winning author, speaker, and bodybuilder and hope to inspire others to push forward no matter the challenges. After enduring an abusive childhood, Jewels decided to use her earlier trauma to enter recovery, sexually liberate herself, and enter the competitive world of bodybuilding. At age 49, Jewels placed 3rd at the NPC North American Championships in 2021. Jewels has appeared on numerous media outlets to discuss a variety of important topics from her memoir including childhood trauma, sexual abuse, alcoholism, shame, LGBTQ, and alternate lifestyles. Sun, 16 Oct 2022 - 141 - Nick Jonsson | Finding Hope In Addiction Recovery, Isolation, Stress, Anxiety, and Depression
Why did I want to talk with Nick Jonsson on the Knockin' Doorz Down podcast? Nick is a top-level executive, one would say an overachiever. Like many Nick had some issues with his parents, mainly his father. After making the bold move to leave his home country of Sweden Nick began to feel isolated. Now Nick has become an advocate in battling addiction, depression, and anxiety, he is on a mission to help not only executives who are suffering from the same issues he has but anyone that is willing to raise their hand and ask for help. Nick's book Executive Loneliness: The 5 Pathways To Overcoming Isolation, Stress, Anxiety, and Depression in the Modern Bussiness World caught my attention. Nick knows executive depression, anxiety, and isolation – and the substance abuse, family breakdowns, poor physical health, self-harm, and suicide that can all too frequently result – and these major issues have been around long before most of us had even heard the word “coronavirus”. Nick knows this for a fact because three years ago, he went through a severe breakdown. At the time, he was performing very well in his career and had recently been placed in Singapore by his company. Over the previous decade, however, he had been unexpectedly laid off from senior roles working in Indonesia and Vietnam. He couldn’t shake the paranoia that no matter how good his performance was, he could be retrenched at any moment. Nick lived on the edge – and drinking took the edge off. When Nick first moved to Singapore, he was all alone in a foreign country, so he sought solace in alcohol and the superficial social circle of his local bar. He stopped exercising and gained 20kg within a few months of arriving in the country. It wasn’t the incredible food that did it – no, it was the booze. Drinking heavily at the end of most days was, to his mind, a reward and a form of therapy, but it only left him feeling more imbalanced, lonely, and disconnected. Psychosomatic disorders and an unhealthy lifestyle began to affect Nick physically. Then the suicide of a close friend, when Nick was in the early stages of my recovery, came as a real shock. No one knew his friend was feeling such despair. He suffered in silence, as so many high-powered executives do (especially men). Nick's friend hadn’t told anyone about his depression or dark thoughts – and that was a terrible wake-up call for Nick. It spurred Nick to speak out about the dangers of depression and anxiety publically, to go on the radio and do keynote talks, to write articles about these issues, and hopefully, save lives. Nick was encouraged by his friend’s brother, who told him, “Scream it out loud!” The hope was to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. This led Nick to write his book Executive Loneliness. In the book, Nick details each of these five steps: Taking Stock, Asking for Help, Getting Healthy, Nurturing Healthy Relationships, and Finding Your Purpose In the chapters dedicated to each of the steps, Nick takes you through his own recovery journey, providing you with deeply personal insights and perspective—as well as practical, actionable advice. Sun, 25 Sep 2022 - 139 - Melissa Bright | Trauma Recovery, Child Of An Addict, Owning Feelings & Award Winning Podcast Host
Why did I want to talk with Melissa Bright on the Knockin' Doorz Down podcast? Melissa is a professional self-esteem coach and is the award-winning host of The Bright Side Of Life podcast. She struggled with self-worth, not loving herself fully, looking at the world with limiting beliefs, living by someone else's standards, being a perfectionist, being a people pleaser, self-sabotaging, seeking outside validation, lacking self-confidence, and not practicing a lot of self-care. Much of this stemmed from her childhood, in which her parents divorced, her dad wasn't present and her mother struggled with sobriety. After losing her Mom at the age of 25, she would spend the next ten years not processing the trauma, losing self-confidence along the way, and feeling alone in her struggles. This all came to a head in 2020 when the whole world was hurting, Melissa decided to turn her pain into her purpose and start healing. Simultaneously while starting therapy, she started thinking about her true purpose in life. She looked out into the world and saw other people hurting as well, and she wanted to help. Now she puts the joy back into people’s hearts through her podcast, The Bright Side of Life, where she talks to people that have successfully navigated their way back to joy and happiness despite their struggles, pain, and grief. All those things she struggled with kept her from lots of things: goals, a great relationship with her boyfriend, a great relationship with herself, and living as her true self. She has done the work to say, "I am now in a completely different place and I no longer struggle with those things. I know who I am, where I am going, what I want to accomplish, and what I have to offer." Now she helps others do the same. This is Melissa Bright in her own words on Knockin' Doors Down. Why did Knockin' Doorz Down host Jason LaChance want to talk with Wil? Wil Prescher's story and memoir "This Is Is Me Trying: Navigating Through A Lifetime of Trauma" are gut-wrenching but inspiring as at 29 he is a warrior on a journey of healing from generational trauma and sexual abuse. Wil went through hell with an absent father and drug-addicted mother. Wil endured, more trauma being placed in the foster care system from age seven until he was almost 13. Bounced around in a broken system and moved from home to home all over the state of Texas. His unresolved trauma eventually to alcohol to escape as he was numb inside and as he says "I was able to feel something when I drank to excess." At the age of twelve, Wil went to a foster home in Walnut Springs, Texas, with loving people who would eventually become his adoptive family. As Wil grew older, he developed a yearning to help individuals who have been in similar situations. He understood how navigating the foster system could be very challenging and that many were not as fortunate as he had been. Wil has spent the last four years studying mental health and substance abuse issues while working with at-risk youth in multiple organizations. During this time, he realized the effects of music therapy on a person's soul and emotional well-being; he is continuing his education to fulfill his dream of becoming a therapist. He hopes to share his experiences with others to show that something good can come out of an unfortunate situation out of his control. When he is not working or studying, Wil enjoys spending time with his family, who have adopted him. He also enjoys hiking and the outdoors. You can always find him jamming to the music of "Pink" with his two cats, and he still resides in Houston, Texas. Wil Prescher has pursued his dream of being an author. His first book titled "This Is Is Me Trying: Navigating Through A Lifetime of Trauma," is available on Amazon in both paperback and e-book versions featured on fine literary book sites. Mon, 25 Jul 2022 - 130 - Mike Diamond | A Path to Sobriety, Secrets on Mental Agility, Purpose & Finding Your Fuel
Why did Knockin' Doorz Down podcast host Jason LaChance want to talk with Mike? Mike Diamond has achieved a great deal externally, but it is the internal battles that he's confronted with the drive for mastery of self. With knowledge, purpose, and a sense of humor. Mike Diamond is an Author, Television Personality, Director, Life Coach, and Interventionist. Known for his work on the hit TV shows NY Ink and Bondi Ink Tattoo Crew, which is currently nominated for a Logie Award for Best Reality Series. Originally from Perth, Western Australia, Mike got off to a bit of a rough start. Battling undiagnosed dyslexia, he started using drugs and alcohol at age 12. At age 16, he was expelled from Aquinas College and finished at Melville H.S. Immediately after graduation, Mike moved to Sydney and enrolled at the Actors Center. He got a job at a local clothing store which, unbeknownst to him at the time, would change his life forever. Lady Luck was on Mike’s side when a customer at the store handed him a Green Card Lottery ticket. Mike won a green card in 1997 and made the move to Miami. Shortly after his arrival, Mike landed a role on the CBS sitcom, Grapevine from Director David Frankel. After Grapevine, Mike moved to NYC, where he worked on various projects including as a guest star on Sex and the City. Mike wrote, created, and starred in a VH1 pilot with former STP and Velvet Revolver frontman, Scott Weiland. Splitting his time between NYC, Miami, and Los Angeles, Mike had regular gigs performing stand-up at Caroline’s on Broadway and The Comedy Store. Mike was properly introduced into the tattoo world when he appeared on Miami Ink. He later became the store manager for his good friend, Ami James, at Wooster St and starred in Season 3 of NY Ink. Mike then headed back to his hometown where he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in Bondi Ink Tattoo Crew, based on Bondi Beach. Although Mike has had plenty of “highs” in his life, he has also had his “low” moments along the way. Mike has battled cocaine and alcohol addiction for the majority of his life. The defining moment came at the height of his career while shooting a TV show for VH1. To the outside world, Mike looked like he was living the dream but on the inside, Mike was spiritually bankrupt and miserable. He realized that if he didn’t turn his life around, he was going to die. April 16, 2006, was the day Mike Diamond got sober. Since then, Mike has literally helped hundreds of people on the road to recovery. He is on beck and call to all his clients and friends, helping them through their life problems and battles with addiction. This is Mike Diamond in his own words, on the Knockin’ Doorz Down podcast. Listen to and Subscribe to the podcast on all platforms and follow Knockin' Doorz Down on social media https://www.kddpodcast.com Why did Knockin' Doorz Down podcast host Jason LaChance want to talk with Jason Carter? Jason Carter author of the autobiography To Hell I Ride a comedic and often heartwrenching look at a life of self-discovery. Jason Carter was living what appeared to be a wonderful life from the outside. A remarkable wife, amazing kids, and a large house close to the country club, but he was fighting an internal battle of unresolved trauma and alcoholism. He was living with thoughts of suicide, as he says "a musky sock floating in the soup"; his unchecked drinking. After a session with a psychologist, he set off driving from Texas to Telluride, searching for clarity. Hypnotized by the open road, he finds himself wheeling through numerous sequences that accelerate his ruin. His book To Hell I Ride is determined, it’s darkly comedic, and it’s his journey into extreme self-awareness. As Jason explores his past, he confronts the inner personal demons haunting him today. Brutally honest, he bares it all; how alcohol crept into his life, the haunting reality that each drink took him farther away from the life he wanted to build, and the truth preventing him from salvation. Listen to and Subscribe to the podcast on all platforms for more amazing interviews at https://www.kddpodcast.com © 2021 by KDD Media Company. All rights reserved. Jason sat down with Helen Bratton of Disaddicted to discuss how she turned the hardships of a traumatic childhood, alcoholism, and a stroke into her passion as an addiction recovery coach. Helen says IT IS TRUE LIFE CAN SUCK! This is my calling, the journey has been challenging, but it has been worth it. In the summer of 2014 in the hills outside Rome, Helen's life was turned upside down, shaken not stirred! She had a near-death stroke at 36 and had to rebuild her life as a disabled woman. She chose recovery from this insidious disease, that was her DECISION to get well and live. Helen initially got sober through a 12-step program but felt similar to her stroke, leading her to unravel her trauma and addiction. Helen worked with a great Recovery Coach who took her recovery to another level. She could choose a limited life or live a life helping others with a great meaning. She loved it so much that she went on to become a recovery coach. She guides others to embrace their authentic selves.
