If you have been studying English for any length of time, you know that English phrasal verbs are really tough. So in today's English lesson, we are going to take one of those English phrasal verbs, take back, and talk about all of the ways they are used in English. I'm pretty sure there are nine ways we use take back in English. Maybe we don't use take back nine different ways in English, but it's a lot. Six, five, how about this? It's too many. My hope is after watching this English lesson, you will feel more comfortable using English phrasal verbs in your next English conversation. I think I just said English 50 times in that sentence. The first way we use take back in English is when you receive something. Maybe you receive a gift, maybe you borrow something. In the United States, we have libraries where you can borrow a book, but you need to take it back within two weeks. A couple of weeks ago, my brother let me borrow a giant fan. I really need to take that fan back to him. I need to take that fan back. Maybe you purchase an item at the store, and for some reason, it doesn't work. Maybe the shirt is too small. Maybe your phone is broken. You can take it back to the store, and hopefully you will get your money back. We sometimes use take back when we speak. Maybe you say the wrong thing. Hey, I have an appointment on Wednesday. Wait, I take that back. It's on Tuesday. Little kids in the United States will sometimes say take that back when somebody says something mean to them. Hey, you are a jerk. No, I'm not. Take that back. In a recent live lesson I did about emotions, I talked about nostalgia. Some people have nostalgia when they look at old photos. It takes them back to a time period in their life. Maybe it takes them back one year. Maybe it takes them back five years. Maybe it takes them back even more than that. If you're old like me, it could take you back to about 48 years. This is an old school kind of English lesson. It takes me back to when I first started this channel. Let me explain how this works in case this is your first time here. My name is Brent and I've done about 20 of these lessons before. And the way this lesson works is that I walk around an American hotel. You come along with me, just like you're visiting the United States. And we talk about English. Tonight, or I should say last night, I stayed at a Best Western in Shelbyville, Kentucky. I've never been to Kentucky before, but I like it already. Across the street is one of the best restaurants you will ever visit in the United States. It's called the Waffle House. One other thing I should say about this hotel English lesson is that I cannot stop recording for any reason. Maybe somebody will stop and talk to us. Maybe somebody will give us a dirty look because we are filming around them. But I did ask the people who work here if it was okay if I filmed and they said it was okay. Just don't get any of the guests on camera and don't get any of the employees or people that work here on camera. Over there... way in the distance is a fast food restaurant called Arby's. I'm not sure if you've ever heard of an Arby's, but look at what is on the other side. A McDonald's and a Burger King. I mean, does it get more American than McDonald's and Burger King? I don't think so. All right, let's walk around, learn some English here at the Best Western in Shelbyville, Connecticut. Connecticut! No, I would edit that out, but I can't stop for any reason. We're not in Connecticut. We're in Kentucky. Just like that license plate shows us. Look at this. Another Kentucky license plate, but this one is California. So they had to travel a pretty far distance to get here in Kentucky. Maybe we should talk about this. Clearance. In the United States, we do use feet, not meters. And what that is saying is that if you have a really tall vehicle, you might hit the roof of your vehicle on that roof up there. So we don't want that, but let's look and see what's on the back of the hotel. Nice little area to sit. Oh no, that is an ashtray on the table. It's very bad. Do you know that? Smoking. You put your ashes in the ashtray. Yeah, somebody was smoking out here, but we would call this a patio. Nice little patio. Maybe come out and eat your breakfast. They do have free breakfast here, which I ate this morning, but it's too late for breakfast. I think it's about 10 o'clock. Breakfast was from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. I'm filming. Oh no. A cigarette butt is in. We would call that a flower pot and there is a cigarette butt in that flower pot. I'm filming this in November and it is definitely fall here. Maybe even winter. Look at all of the leaves are off the trees. Just about. So I'm sure in the spring, those flower pots. Would have flowers in them, but since it's not spring, or summer, they're pretty much empty because I think the flowers would

The goal of today's English lesson is to help you feel more comfortable when you're speaking English. You might also hear rummage sale, lawn sale, yard sale, garage sale. We have a bunch of names for it. But basically what that means is somebody has a lot of stuff they want to get rid of, so they put it outside of their house, they advertise it maybe in a newspaper, and other people come to buy the stuff that these people don't want. We'll talk to the homeowner, Christy, in just a little bit. But let's take a look at some of the items you could buy at a garage sale. Let's talk about the verb rummage. A lot of Americans have something called a junk drawer. That's just probably a place in the kitchen, a drawer, where they put a bunch of stuff, odds and ends. And if you rummage through that, that means you are looking for something, and you might have to move other items as you rummage. Garage, you probably know that term. Across the street, right there, that person has a garage. A lot of times you can store a car in the garage, but a lot of Americans just keep buying stuff, and they don't have room in their garage for a car. Now, this is grass, but you could also call it a lawn or a front lawn. Or maybe like a front yard. That's where we get all of those terms. Rummage sale, yard sale, lawn sale, garage sale. Let's talk about some of these items that are for sale. I don't know. I don't... Actually, I don't think this is for sale. I think this is... Yeah, that looks like somebody's using that. I don't think we can buy that. But maybe we could buy this dresser. We'd probably call this a dresser. Maybe a bureau. We would definitely call these board games. They look like they're on a blue tarp. Oh, this thing, Pie Face. This was super popular a couple years ago. To play Pie Face, you ask a bunch of questions, and I think if you get it wrong, you get a pie in the face. That could be fun. That could be messy. Let's talk about the verb outgrow. Here, there are a lot of clothes for sale. And it probably means that the children in this house are too big for these clothes now. They've outgrown them. They're selling them for pretty cheap. Two bucks for a pair of jeans?

Apple: "I like to eat a red apple for a snack." 2. Banana: "A yellow banana is a sweet and tasty fruit." 3. Bread: "We use bread to make sandwiches for lunch." 4. Cheese: "Pizza has melted cheese on top, and it's delicious." 5. Chicken: "Chicken is a type of meat, and it's good for dinner." 6. Chocolate: "I love to eat chocolate because it's sweet and brown." 7. Coffee: "Many grown-ups drink coffee to wake up in the morning." 8. Egg: "We can cook an egg for breakfast; it's a little round food." 9. Fish: "Fish is a food that lives in water, and we can cook it." 10. Grapes: "Grapes are small, round fruits in bunches, and they taste sweet." And the next one, one of my favorite foods, is chocolate. And I have a definition and a sentence for you, using chocolate. Chocolate is a sweet treat that's brown and delicious. If you remember back to the colors lesson we did, we talked about brown. And I think we talked about chocolate as well. Here's a sentence using the word chocolate. I love to eat chocolate because it's sweet and brown. Brown is not one of my favorite colors, but I thought that would be a good review. Brown. The next one is also brown. But some people like to drink it warm, and some people like to drink it cold. But, it is one of the most popular drinks around the world, and that is coffee. Probably second to water as the world's favorite drink, or at least most common drink, coffee is a warm and dark drink that many adults enjoy. Some children, but I think most doctors say that children should not drink coffee, because it contains caffeine. In English, caffeine is a drug that gives you energy. Many people like to drink coffee to wake up in the morning. Please, let me know in the comments. Do you drink coffee every morning, or do you drink water every morning, which is probably healthier? I like to drink energy drinks, and I don't think those are that healthy. But, do you know what is healthy? That is an egg. You can cook an egg many different ways. Those yellow eggs on the plate, those are called scrambled eggs. And that kind of white and yellow egg, we call that a sunny side up egg. The yellow part is called the yolk, and the white part is called the white part. It's an egg white. An egg is a small oval food that comes from birds and is used in cooking. So, if you look at the shape of that egg in the middle, no, that way, call that an oval. It's almost like a circle. The next one is fish. But, before we get to fish, we should probably read the sentence with egg. We can cook an egg for breakfast. It's a little round food. So, ovals and circles are round. The next one is fish. You can have one fish, or you can have two fish. We do not say fishes. Fish is a food that lives in water, and we can cook it. And I think if you look at the picture over there, that kind of pink or reddish colored fish might be called salmon. And those yellow things are lemon slices. Fish can be prepared in many different ways. You might have a piece of fish for dinner. This might be the last one. I think it is. This is a fruit, a purple fruit. Grapes. Grapes are small, round fruits that come in bunches and taste sweet. Grapes are one of my favorite fruits. I hope you've enjoyed this lesson about learning... Alright, it's a new day. I have a new shirt on, but we still have a few colors to talk about. The first one I would like to talk about is orange. Yeah, it's a little hard to pronounce. Orange. Oranges are orange in color. The pumpkin is orange. And if you look at that picture, that's true. The thing right over here, we call that an orange, and it just so happens to be orange in color. And the thing right next to it, pumpkin. I'm actually recording this on Halloween, one of the days, maybe the only day, known for pumpkins. Halloween. Let's scroll down a little bit more. Purple. Grapes can be purple. And if you look at that picture over there, there are a few bunches of grapes hanging from the tree. Purple is a cool color, and it's my favorite. So if you remember from the last part of the video, I said yellow was my favorite color. But my wife, Jamie, her favorite color is purple. Purple. Hopefully, not too hard to say. The next color is brown. This is one of my least favorite colors. I probably like brown the least of all the colors, I think. Couple things that are brown. Chocolate is brown. I can't resist chocolate, especially brownies. And if you look in the picture, on the left side, that is a bar of chocolate. And on the right side is something we call brownies in English. This next color, I kind of like. It's probably in my top five favorite colors. Pink. Flamingos are pink birds. And if you look at that picture, that bird that's standing straight up is what we call a flamingo in English. I don't think flamingos can fly. Most birds can fly, but I don't think the flamingo can. If you know that it can, please let me know in the comments. And next to the flamingo is a pink milkshake. And I'm thinking that is a strawberry milkshake. Flamingos are pink birds. Strawberry milkshakes can also be pink. This next color, black, is a color that a lot of people like. If you look at that picture, you can barely see the outline of a black cat. I believe, let's make it a little bigger, but I believe those eyes are yellow. Yeah. Take a look. The knight is black. The cat is black. During the day, the sky is blue, but when the sun goes down, the sky turns to mostly black. You might see a little bit of light, and we call those little bits of light stars. And last but not least, white. Snow is white. The paper is white. I think behind me, this background here, it's mostly white. Maybe a couple shades of white. We may talk about shades in the next lesson on colors. That's going to do it for today's lesson about important colors in English.

Kind of famous, I think, all over the world, all over the United States. I don't know. That might be a little crazy, but yeah, all over the United States we sell our popcorn online and in many different retailers all over the country. My name is Julie Roberts and I just wanted to let everybody know that I'm fourth generation here in Boothbay Harbor, which is where we started 15 years ago. So this popcorn company is 15 years old. We are 15 years old. You have so many crazy flavors like dill pickle, loaded baked potato. I will talk about what that means, but how about this? How many flavors do you have? We usually carry around 40 at a time. We have an arsenal of about 70 because we also have spring and summer flavors. We have fall and holiday flavors. So it sort of varies throughout the year. That makes sense. So like maybe right now you don't have pumpkin, but maybe in the fall you would have a pumpkin popcorn? We're actually launching a new flavor. Our fall flavors will come out the last week of August and we're doing a pumpkin cheesecake. Well, maybe we'll have to come back and try that. So out of all of the 70 or so flavors, which one is your favorite? I always tell people that's like asking me which of my kids I like the most. I love them both, but for many different reasons. Right now I'm kind of stuck on the truffle salt and olive oil, but I also love the mint chocolate cookie. It's like your favorite thin mint Girl Scout cookie. I have to honestly say there isn't one that I don't love. So I'll have to ask you the opposite. Maybe you won't say it. Is there a flavor that other people buy that you don't like? It would probably be the red hot cinnamon and the black licorice. I think they're both amazing flavors. The red hot cinnamon is just like fireballs and the black licorice for people that like black licorice. It's great because it's crunchy, not chewy, something totally

This mountain is called Whitecap. I have some information here that I kind of read already. We're in the parking lot right now. We are going to take the red trail up to the mountain, but first I'm going to leave a little donation right here. Yeah, so I'm leaving a donation because this trail has to be maintained. It needs to be fixed every so often. Hey, there is a bathroom here. That's very convenient. So when a tree gets knocked down, there are volunteers, I think, that come here and clear the trail. So I thought we'll give them a little, a little money, and if everybody does that, then they will be okay. Look at this. It's about two and a half miles to get there and then two and a half miles back. So it's going to be about a five mile hike today. It takes about three hours, I'm told. But I don't know about you, but it just makes me feel good to get out in the woods, back into nature, we might say. And it looks like I have the whole trail to myself. I don't see anybody else here. There were a few cars in the parking lot, but I'll check in with you in a minute if we have some nice views, and then we'll eat lunch at the summit. That's another way to say top of the mountain. Such a beautiful hike so far. And for most of the way, I've been able to listen to the water trickle in this nearby stream. Trickle almost always has something to do with water. And it means that it is flowing very slowly. Look at this. Not even a trickle here. Looks like there was a little stream going over the path at one point, but not anymore. And we have had a lot of rain this summer. All right, got some heavy breathing going on. We might even call it panting, like when a dog is hot, and they're breathing heavily. We might call that panting. But there was a blue blaze on that tree. And there's an arrow pointing to the summit. Look at that sky, huh? Is that not beautiful? I think we are getting closer and closer to the summit, because I'm seeing more and more rock. The higher up you go, the harder it is for trees to grow. So I think we're getting close. See that orange blaze on that rock?

Panic in my Neighborhood: Swarms of Sirens Passing By Lewiston, Maine I mean, they're going right by my brother lives up there. They're going past my house. Yeah, something bad. I mean, they're flying. And there's a lot of them. What is going on? This is a probably the craziest channel members video I've ever made. I know you can't see me, but you really don't have to. I'm outside of my house and there are sirens going on. Maybe you can hear them. It's I think it's eight o'clock at night. And my neighbor's dog, I'm I'm in no danger here. Let me just be clear about that. I mean, I'm in very little danger. It's weird, but there are a lot of rumors going on in the town that I live in. I live in a town called Lewiston, Maine. My neighbors, that's just my neighbor with her dog. But let me let me get to the point here. The most sirens I've ever heard in my life, they've been going on for the last half hour. And what I guess has happened in my town, I hope this isn't true. But with social media, everybody's talking. My family is home tonight safe. My daughter is usually out at this time. She's usually at a rehearsal for a play she has coming up a show on stage. And but she's home tonight. But and of course, I'll update you tomorrow or whatever. But it's just a weird time right now because people are saying that there are. Maybe 16 people shot just a couple miles from my house like at the bowling alley. I sometimes go to and. A restaurant just down the street and when I say down the street, maybe two miles, but. Every day I come home, I pass it, so it's pretty close, like from work. So I'll let you know what's going on, but it is kind of crazy because. A lot of car horns going on right now. Yeah, so what was I saying? I don't know why those horns are going on, to be honest. Or maybe people are just locking their cars right now. I think that's what it is. People from inside their house. I'm not I'm not I'm not worried about my safety right now. I wouldn't be out here if I was. But it's a beautiful night. And. I don't know if you can hear it's just crazy. All of the sirens. I don't even know what I said. Did I say some people think that there are. And I'm getting text messages. I need to go pretty soon. My phone is blowing up. But there might be like 16 people shot. I have friends who are nurses and doctors and they're being called into the hospital. So it's just an absolutely crazy situation. And it just makes me think like, did somebody plan this? So I don't know. I don't know. I don't want to scare anybody. This is just going to members and kind of let you in on what's going on in my life. But it's just a crazy night. Crazy night. And so let me sit down here. Some are saying, you know, like. You hear that? I hope you can hear it is just people are just. And who knows, people may be. In today's English lesson, we are going to visit my brother's backyard. And in his backyard, he has tons of wood. Because during the winter, he heats his house with wood. So today, we are going to find out all the ways he has to prepare for winter. Alright, this is my brother Ben. And like I said, he heats his house with wood. But, starting in the summer, he has got to get ready for that somehow. So Ben, do you mind taking us through the process of what you have to do to get your house ready for the winter? Sure, we absolutely can do that. It starts with log form wood. Then we cut it to size. Then we use a splitter to split it. We put it in the trailer. Then we stack it and let it dry out. How long does it take for your wood to dry out? Different species are different times. But usually, you cut it and split it in the spring. It is ready for winter. Oh really? And okay, so what happens if the wood is wet in the winter? It just takes too much energy to burn. So you lose BTUs. So it won't heat as well. It will smoke. It will smell. Just not fun. And BTUs, what does that stand for? British Thermal Units. And the higher the number, the better it burns? The hotter it burns. And so, the higher the better for you? Yes. So, let's see, what is it? Is that a maple tree right there? Yes, it is. So, when it comes to maple trees, do they burn well or not so well? They burn very well. There are quite a few different species of maple. There is some softer maple. And there is some harder maple. But that is a good wood. It dries fast. Burns nice. And the harder, the better for maple? Correct. And behind us, I think I already know the answer to this. This is a pine tree. Now, I think, and I don't know much about wood, but I think those things pretty much suck to burn, right? Well, in Maine, we are lucky because we do have hardwoods. The more north you go, obviously, you only have softwoods. Spruce, firs, pines. You won't see maples. You won't see oaks in the north. So, many people burn softwood. Is pine soft? It is, correct. Now, does the sap in a pine tree affect the burning at all? If you don't let a pine dry, you tend to get chimney fires. The creosote builds up in the chimney, and it could create a fire. Which could burn your house down? Possibly. So, you definitely have to dry your pine out if you're going to use it. Any wood, really. Any wood will produce creosote, but pine or any softwood creates a bit more if it's not dried.

So in today's English lesson, we are going to take one of those English phrasal verbs, take back, and talk about all of the ways they are used in English. I'm pretty sure there are nine ways we use take back in English. Maybe we don't use take back nine different ways in English, but it's a lot. Six, five, how about this? It's too many. My hope is after watching this English lesson, you will feel more comfortable using English phrasal verbs in your next English conversation. I think I just said English 50 times in that sentence. The first way we use take back in English is when you receive something. Maybe you receive a gift, maybe you borrow something. In the United States, we have libraries where you can borrow a book, but you need to take it back within two weeks. A couple of weeks ago, my brother let me borrow a giant fan. I really need to take that fan back to him. I need to take that fan back. Maybe you purchase an item at the store, and for some reason, it doesn't work. Maybe the shirt is too small. Maybe your phone is broken. You can take it back to the store, and hopefully you will get your money back. We sometimes use take back when we speak. Maybe you say the wrong thing. Hey, I have an appointment on Wednesday. Wait, I take that back. It's on Tuesday. Little kids in the United States will sometimes say take that back when somebody says something mean to them. Hey, you are a jerk. No, I'm not. Take that back. In a recent live lesson I did about emotions, I talked about nostalgia. Some people have nostalgia when they look at old photos. It takes them back to a time period in their life. Maybe it takes them back one year. Maybe it takes them back five years. Maybe it takes them back even more than that. If you're old like me, it could take you back to about 48 years. This is an old school kind of English lesson. It takes me back to when I first started this channel. Because today, we are at an animal shelter, and we are going to talk to some people who work here. In the United States, we are lucky enough to have something called animal shelters. If an animal doesn't have a home, they can come here to this shelter, and hopefully, they will get adopted. If they get adopted, that means some people see the animal here and want to take them back to their house. Kate? Not bad, how are you? Good. Is it Katie? I'm sorry? Are you Katie? No. No. Sorry. The shelter is closed, but I can grab somebody for you. I'm supposed to be meeting Katie. So where should we go first, you think? Because you're the expert here, Katie. You know what I didn't even do? What? I didn't even introduce you to everybody. So, this is Katie. She obviously works at the shelter, but I think you have like an official title. I have an official title. I'm the executive director here. That sounds really important. Some days, I don't know that it's important, but it is definitely busy. Okay, well thank you for taking your time here. Yeah, sure thing. Where would you like to show us first? Let's take a walk down to the dogs. Okay, the dogs. So our shelter, we do dogs, cats, and small animals. So, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rats. Like the small furry animals. And we also will take birds. So, you know, cockatiels, parakeets, the smaller birds. Animals that we do not take are reptiles and amphibians. There are local groups around here that do. We don't because they need such specialized care. You know, the heat lamps and the food that they require, we just can't keep that and maintain an animal the way they need to be. So we let those very skilled rescues take care of those animals. There are some people, oh, I can cut this, but are you a reptile person? Do you like snakes? I'm fine with snakes. They don't bother me. I wouldn't have them. I wouldn't want to have to feed them live. You know, there are some considerations around that. But luckily, some people just love them, right? And they take care of them. Some people love them. Some people are terrified of them. You know, it really ranges. So dogs, we typically have about 600 to 700 dogs that come through our facility every year. Between 600 and 700 is a typical year. This year, we've got above average numbers already. And we have a lot of folks, unfortunately, dealing with housing challenges, the economy, not being able to get veterinary care or afford veterinary care. And they're calling us, making the difficult decision to bring in an animal. We try to help them if we can to keep the pet in the home. But there's an awful lot that are coming into us these days. I also have a question about the pit bulls. When I was younger, I was delivering papers and I was chased by two pit bulls. And my sister was too. She's really afraid of dogs. I don't mind them, but how about this?

What's going on? What do you say we read a news article? It was kind of big news last week. As we read this, I'm going to have pictures for you and some definitions for the words. I'm just a little worried that they are out of order. So it might not be as organized as usual. And for that I apologize, but we will be able to read this article. So let's start at the top here and we'll read the title and it says a toddler lost in the woods is found asleep using family dog as a pillow. So when I first saw this article, I thought, oh, that's so cute. And I saw this little picture here. I thought, oh, this could be a toddler. We'll talk about what toddler is in a minute, but I can imagine her going out just for a little walk like toddler. Maybe we should talk about that right now, but it's a young child who's just recently learned how to walk. So maybe they're like between one and two years old. So typical toddler. So I don't know where the parents were. They probably just for a second stopped watching this child and it doesn't take long. I've been there before as a parent. It doesn't take long for your little child to like where they go. So it seems like in a matter of seconds, this person, this little girl was gone. So this takes place in Michigan, Faithhorn, Michigan. Never heard of this city, but a two-year-old girl who walked away from her home in Michigan's Upper Peninsula alongside two family dogs was found in the woods hours later sleeping on the smaller dog like a furry pillow State Police said. So in that paragraph, I do have Michigan's Upper Peninsula highlighted. So maybe we should talk about that and hopefully that's my next slide here. It is so organized so far. So Peninsula that means land that is surrounded by water but basically three sides. So if you look at that picture, you know, there's water like in the front of it to the left of it to the right of it, but not behind it. So if you look down, it's a noun. A peninsula is a thing piece of land almost surrounded by water or projecting out into a body of water. So if something is projecting out, it means like pushed forward and I do have another they talked about the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and I wanted to show you what the state of Michigan looks like it's separated into two parts. So the bottom part that's kind of like a peninsula because it is surrounded by water, but it almost looks like how would I do it like a glove and sometimes whe

It's like making ice turn back into water or making frozen food ready to cook or eat. "Mix in" means to combine different things together, like stirring ingredients in a recipe. It's like making sure everything is mixed well so that they are all together nicely. "If you 'heat up' water, it will boil, which means the water starts to bubble. If you have too much water in the pot, it may boil over, and the water will start overflowing from the pot. "Chop up" means to cut something into small pieces using a knife or another sharp tool. It's like making bigger things into smaller bits so you can cook or use them easily. For example, you can chop up vegetables for a salad by cutting them into tiny pieces.
