The nursing workforce has faced a staffing shortage since the early 2000s, with nurses leaving the profession due to retirement, burnout, or pay. This staffing shortage has been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a staffing crisis.

In this episode, MEDSURG Nursing Journal Editorial Board Member Dr. Terry Jones, PhD, RN, leads a dynamic roundtable discussion with her colleagues from Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, who are creating a new care delivery model for their medical-surgical nursing units. Acute-on-chronic pain and tolerance are very complex issues. The bedside nurse plays a critical role in pain management, including medication reconciliation and making sure home medications are continued in the hospital. Patient education is imperative. Managing the patient’s expectation is key, but setting realistic goals is a must.

MEDSURG Nursing routinely publishes articles on pain management. In this episode, MEDSURG Nursing Editorial Board Member Susan Bohnenkamp cites two such articles recently published in the journal and talks with Dr. Heather Carlisle, a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Arizona College of Nursing. Dr. Carlisle is certified in pain management and palliative care and has published extensively on the topic of opioid safety and patient monitoring in acute care settings. Prior to joining the faculty, she worked as a nurse practitioner on an acute pain service at a level one trauma center, where she consulted on patients with complex pain needs, particularly acute-on-chronic pain. She coordinated the Pain Resource Nurse Group, a group of med-surg nurses who meet monthly to discuss their challenges with pain management, and to share resources and expertise.

Heather Carlisle, PhD, DNP, RN, AGACNP, FNP, ACHPN, is a Clinical Associate Professor and an AGACNP Specialty Coordinator at the University of Arizona College of Nursing in Tucson, Arizona.

The increasing complexity of nursing duties and the drive to control costs are producing considerable pressure in nursing work environments. This often leads to increased levels of anxiety in nursing environments, which can be a challenge for nurses. One calming technique is coloring pre-drawn geometric designs, such as mandalas.

The May/June 2020 issue of MEDSURG Nursing features the article entitled, “The Effect of Coloring Mandalas on the Anxiety of Medical-Surgical Nurses and Nursing Support Staff,” authored by Patricia Maguire, Ann Coughlan, Deborah Drayton, Hannah Lacko, Jessie Reich, and Linda Hatfield. In the article, Ms. Maguire and her coauthors discuss findings of their study, which suggest coloring pre-drawn mandalas is an effective, individualized way to lower anxiety in medical-surgical nurses and nursing staff.

In this episode, MEDSURG Nursing Editorial Board Member Dr. Kristi Campoe, talks with three authors of the article, Ms. Patricia Maguire, Ms. Ann Coughlan, and Dr. Linda Hatfield. In this episode, MEDSURG Nursing Editorial Board member Dr. Cynthia Ward talks with Dr. Donna Bond about respiratory compromise. Dr. Bond provides information regarding why respiratory compromise is of concern for medsurg nurses; the importance of awareness of respiratory compromise to help reduce adverse events and patient deaths; how medsurg nurses can increase their awareness through recommendations, clinical education, and training; policies that should be put in place to guide nursing practice; and the role of medsurg nurses in treating patients with respiratory compromise.

Donna Bond, DNP, RN, CCNS, AE-C, CTTS, is a Clinical Nurse Specialist also at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA; and is an active member in several nursing organizations, including the Virginia Chapter of Clinical Nurse Specialists; the Respiratory Nursing Society Interprofessional Collaborative, and the Respiratory Compromise Institute. Other organizations where she has contributed her time are Sigma Theta Tau, as a founding member of Tau Phi; and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. She currently serves on the national board of the Respiratory Compromise Institute representing the Clinical Nurse Specialist role as one of two nurses on the board, and represented the Clinical Nurse Specialist role/Respiratory Nursing Society on the national CONCERT workshop to determine priorities for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. She carries certification as a Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Asthma Educator, and Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist. Recently she was inducted into the first class of fellows at the 2019 Annual National Clinical Nurse Specialist conference. Donna has presented at many national conferences as both a speaker and poster presenter. She has also been published for her work with adolescents in tobacco prevention, asthma education, and the Clinical Nurse Specialist role.
