A new edition of Roqe with popular Iranian-British thinker, author and award-winning psychologist, Dr. Fathali Moghaddam, joining Jian for a feature hour to discuss his latest book entitled “The Psychology of Revolution” and to dissect why revolutions don’t always lead to better results and what does and doesn’t change with revolution, seen through a psychological lens. Firouz Naderi was well known for his rise to the top-levels of NASA and his brilliant work in bringing humanity closer to Mars. But Dr Naderi was also increasingly speaking out about the world, politics, and policy in the United States and in Iran… and feeling the sting of those who disagreed with him as a consequence. Today, we replay a very special interview with Dr. Firouz Naderi - who joined Jian from Los Angeles for this conversation - about space, belonging and putting oneself out there with opinions and politics. Mehrangiz is a celebrated human rights activist who was one of the first female attorneys to oppose the Islamization of gender relations following the Iranian Revolution of 1979. She became an active public defender in Iran’s civil and criminal courts. She joins Jian in the Roqe Studio for a very intimate and personal interview about her life…from her early years in Ahvaz and her female role models, to becoming a prominent lawyer and her fight for human rights, to her imprisonment, her exile, and dealing with the tragic death of her late husband.

A Special Edition of Roqe coinciding with the anniversary of Reza Shah’s birthday this week. This two-hour special focused on the “father of modern Iran” - updated from our Contemporary History of Iran episodes last year - tells the story of a man who came from modest means to become Iran’s powerful ruler whilst establishing the Pahlavi Dynasty. Indeed, Reza Shah’s evolution from military leader, to prime minister, to king of Iran from 1925-1941, would see him presiding over a fundamental transformation of Iran and the centralization of the Iranian state. He can be credited with everything from unifying warring tribes, to a national railroad, the ‘Persianization' of Iran, and the suppression of the dominance of the clergy, as well as women’s rights, and educational and judicial reform. But Reza Shah was also widely seen as an autocrat who ruled with an iron will and, by many accounts, was deeply unpopular by the time he was effectively forced from the throne and into exile by the British in 1941. Then the rock vocalist and musician, Houman Javid, is live in the Roqe Studio in Toronto for a conversation and performance and makes the case that the current uprising is an inspirational continuation of what he and his peers wanted years ago inside Iran. And finally, the singer and recording artist Gelareh Sheibani joins Jian from Los Angeles to debut a new song and speak about her message of peace and inner-balance.
