Something has happened to the simple, yet radical and profound movement started 2,000 years ago by a Jewish carpenter from Nazareth. A movement that appeared to be dead on arrival with Jesus’ crucifixion in only a matter of days became a movement that would change the entire Roman Empire in the span of just 300 years. But, as we look at the world around us, has this movement that began as a roar become only a whimper of everything Jesus intended? Is what we see today the same movement that swept across nations, that shaped history, and for which countless faithful have given everything, even their own lives? It cannot be. There has to be more. In The Way of Jesus, author and pastor Mike Megginson invites readers on a journey to take a deeper look at what it truly means to be a Christian—calling believers away from settling for mere “Churchianity” to embracing the ancient, authentic, revolutionary Christianity rooted and grounded in the wildness and wonder of the person of Jesus. Mike Megginson is one of the founding pastors of 3Circle Church in Fairhope, Ala., where he currently serves as an associate pastor and director of the church’s pastoral care and local missions ministry. With more than 35 years of ministry experience, Mike is passionate about equipping the local church for missions and discipleship. Most recently, Mike and his wife, Sally, spent two years as full-time missionaries in Costa Rica where Mike served as an advisor and elder for Iglesia Casa Vida in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. It was on the mission field in Costa Rica where Mike’s first book found its way from pen to paper.

    What does it look like? Radically different living The believer who allows Jesus to reign in their hearts and lives. Loving your enemy Turning the other cheek Going the extra mile His values were different Jesus valued people above all rather than things He valued grace over law The woman who was caught in adultery Obedience over comfort Truth over success His purpose was to glorify the father He had a bottom up approach to leadership while we often borrow our leadership styles from the world in the church He didn’t come to be serve but came to serve as a ransom for many  Jesus came to usher us into his kingdom, and one day he will establish that kingdom here on earth. But while that is in the future, it has already begun with us here and now through that covenant.

     

    Action Steps: How can we demonstrate the kingdom?

    Serving others Giving ourselves wholly Relational leadership Selfless leadership Making it all about others Pouring into, giving to, and serving others Remembering Jesus was all powerful and he didn’t have to go to the cross but even at the cross, he chose to stay and to pray for others at the cross and to point others to the father.

    Becoming more like Jesus: the importance of community

    Jesus didn’t do life alone and identified his friends first before beginning his ministry

    Jesus took time to pray He allowed God to direct him in that decision of who his disciples would be If Jesus needed community, how much more do we need it?

    Christ chose imperfect people to be in his community:

    Matthew was a tax collector Judas betrayed him Simon Peter denied Jesus three times Jesus chose them anyway

    Christian community doesn’t necessarily mean Sunday morning gatherings

    It’s easy to avoid connecting, however… Small groups offer: Encouragement Growth Accountability Care Discipleship

    Purposes of community: Send out people to share the good news Meeting needs Cast out demons Push back the darkness
