In summer 2020, Theatr Iolo ran a competition for children and young people between the ages of 7 and 16 to write an original ten-minute play. The competition was launched at a time when most children and young people were learning from home due to COVID-19 and provided a creative activity for children and young people whilst theatres were closed.
We received entries from many young people and enjoyed reading every single one of them! It was a difficult decision, but we are delighted to announce that the winning plays areThe Wakey-Wake-Amaticby Esme (age 10),Home from Warby Lauren (age 14),Two Worlds, One Mealby Faaris (age 13) andCer i Ffwrddby Rhiana (age 15).
The plays were originally set to be performed at the Sherman Theatre but, as theatres around the country remain closed, the four winning scripts have been recorded as audio plays that can be listened to at home or in schools on the Theatr Iolo podcast channel.

Yn haf 2020, cynhaliodd Theatr Iolo gystadleuaeth i blant a phobl ifanc rhwng 7 ac 16 oed ysgrifennu drama ddeng munud wreiddiol. Lansiwyd y gystadleuaeth ar adeg pan oedd y rhan fwyaf o blant a phobl ifanc yn dysgu gartref oherwydd COVID-19 ac yn darparu gweithgaredd creadigol i blant a phobl ifanc tra bod theatrau ar gau.Cawsom gynigion gan lawer o bobl ifanc a mwynhau darllen pob un ohonynt! Roedd yn benderfyniad anodd, ond rydym yn falch iawn o gyhoeddi mai'r dramâu buddugol yw The Wakey-Wake-Amaticgan Esme (10 oed), Home from Wargan Lauren (14 oed), Two Worlds, One Mealgan Faaris (13 oed) ) a Cer i Ffwrddgan Rhiana (15 oed).
Yn wreiddiol, gosodwyd y dramâu i gael eu perfformio yn Theatr y Sherman ond, wrth i theatrau ledled y wlad aros ar gau, mae’r pedair sgript fuddugol wedi’u recordio fel dramâu sain y gellir gwrando arnynt gartref neu mewn ysgolion ar sianel podlediad Theatr Iolo.

So, what’s it like round here? The unheard, unbelievable true story of a girl called Maya; forever thirteen, forever on the move.
Funny, fearless and frightening, Transporter explores themes of identity, difference, conflict, and what it means to come or not come from somewhere.
Transporter tells the story of Maya, a girl who is constantly on the move. We meet Maya as she stands on the threshold of a new house in an ordinary city. From this everyday moment an epic story is woven, spanning decades and continents.
Maya - forever thirteen - is both ordinary and extraordinary; schoolgirl, time traveller, shaman. Tales of classroom conflicts, flights across deserts, ice cream dreams and thwarted revolutions weave together, and the local and the global the personal and political collide.
In a year that witnessed the Grenfell Tower fire, an unprecedented rise in homeless families in the UK, and entire populations on the move, together we considered the questions: What does home mean? Is there a safe place left on Earth? How do we navigate our way through a world that appears to be in ruins?
Written and performed by Catherine Dyson, in collaboration with Andy Smith and Lewis Gibson.Developed through Theatr Iolo's artist development programme, Platfform, Transporter was born out of conversations with young people from the city of Newport, South Wales.

When was the last time you were transported?
Together we will go on a journey across continents and years, down city streets, through deserts, over oceans, asking questions that echo through history. Transporter is a bold, spellbinding show, born out of a belief in the power of words to transport. Just one performer in an empty space, and an audience. An act of shared imagination. A kind of magic that happens... when you simply listen to a story.
This is the story of a girl called Maya. A girl who is always thirteen. A girl who is always on the move. A never-ending search for the last safe place on Earth.
Written and performed by Catherine Dyson, in collaboration with Andy Smith and Lewis Gibson. Co-produced by Theatr Iolo and The Riverfront.
Developed through our artist development programme Platfform, Transporter was written in Newport, where conversations with local young people inspired a story of universal and timeless resonance.
