- 418 - Session 359: Unpacking Black Women's Humor
When I think about Black women’s humor, I think about the subtle glances we share when something ridiculous happens in public, the physicality of slapping each other on the back after a really good joke, or the ways in which you can always tell just how a girlfriend is feeling by looking at the expression on her face. Even when meeting a Black woman who is a complete stranger, we still find ways to connect over our shared sense of humor.
To talk a little more about the subtle nuances of Black women’s humor, and why humor is so sacred to us, today we're joined by professor, researcher, and Black humor scholar, Dr. Erica-Brittany Horhn. During our conversation, we chat about what makes Black women so funny, how Black women have historically used humor to combat the psychological impacts of oppression, and the ways in which Black women’s humor is passed down generationally.

Wed, 15 May 2024 - 417 - Session 358: Tending to Youth Mental Health
After living through a global pandemic, missing years of in-person interaction, and dealing with the constant onslaught of violence displayed on social media, I think it’s safe to say that our kids are far from alright.
Joining me today to talk about some of the top concerns youth are facing when it comes to their mental health is fellow psychologist, Dr. Alfiee Breland-Noble. A thought leader in her field, Dr. Alfiee focuses on mental health and suicide prevention for intersectional Youth and Young Adults of Color. She is a regular media contributor for outlets like The Grio, Today Show, The Breakfast Club, the New York Times, and others. During our conversation, we discuss the impact of racial trauma on youth mental health, how parents can monitor their child’s activity without invading their privacy, and strategies for cultivating an environment in which a child can express themselves freely.

Wed, 08 May 2024 - 416 - Session 357: Shedding the Shoulds
Take a second to think of all the things in your life you’ve been told you “should” do. I should eat more healthy. I should be a better mom. I should have a partner. Now, imagine how much freer you could be by transforming those shoulds into cans, allowing you the ability to pursue your desires without shame.
To talk with me today about why women should stop should-ing themselves is returning guest Dr. Melissa Robinson Brown. Dr. Mel is a licensed clinical psychologist, health & wellness enthusiast, and multi-passionate entrepreneur. During our conversation, we discussed how to notice when you’ve developed a pattern of should-ing on yourself or others, the importance of having a strong group of friends who can help you combat negative self-talk, and how parents can stop the cycle of “should-ing” by embracing grace and compassion.

Wed, 01 May 2024 - 415 - Session 356: Black People & Hospital Neglect
It’s no secret that the relationship between Black people and the healthcare system is a fraught one. And as medical racism continues to go unaddressed, we’re seeing more and more negative health outcomes for Black patients, including the perpetuation of harmful conspiracy theories and hesitance to seek medical help when in need.
Joining me this week to talk about the history and statistics behind some of these outcomes is health advocate and New York Times Best Selling Author, Dr. Uché Blackstock. Dr. Blackstock is the founder and CEO of Advancing Health Equity, an organization created with the mission of partnering with healthcare organizations to dismantle racism in healthcare and to close the gap in racial health inequities. During our conversation, we discuss some of the most prevalent examples of hospital neglect experienced by Black patients, how healthcare systems can better engage with Black communities in order to engender trust, and how Black medical students can find support while studying to become physicians.

Tue, 23 Apr 2024 - 413 - Session 355: The Work of Death Doulas
It is guaranteed that everyone on this Earth will eventually die, and yet, the process is made difficult with considerations such as appointing an authorized representative, leaving dependents behind, and other bureaucratic formalities that can be outright cruel to deal with when you’re alreadyexperiencing grief. Stepping in to help with these considerations are death doulas, who work to make this monumental transition as smooth as possible for both the dying and their families.
To talk with us today about what it means to be a death doula, this week we're joined by death doula and newly-published author of the memoir ‘Briefly Perfect Human,’ Alua Arthur. Alua is the founder of Going with Grace, a death doula training and end-of-life planning organization that exists to support people as they answer the question, “What must I do to be at peace with myself so that I may live presently and die gracefully?” During our conversation we discussed the training and certifications required to become a death doula, how death doulas assist both the dying and their families in making end-of-life decisions, and how dying means becoming comfortable with the idea of leaning on our community for support.

Wed, 10 Apr 2024 - 411 - Session 353: Art Therapy 101
Playing with markers, clay, and stencils is something we may recall fondly from our youth, but today dismiss as childish. Art Therapy, however, is a very legitimate and relaxing form of therapy for all ages that challenges us to think through our emotions by putting pen to paper. To tell us more, today we're joined by Chicago based artist and registered art therapist, Pierra D. Brown. Since graduating with her Master’s from the School of the Art Institute, she’s worked both in communities, schools, and hospitals to provide clinical services to people of all ages.
During our conversation, Pierra and I discuss the training needed to become an art therapist, how art therapy can be used as an alternative or in supplement with traditional talk therapy, and what art therapy can teach us about shedding our perfectionist habits.

Tue, 02 Apr 2024 - 409 - Session 352: Becoming A Widow
One of life’s most profound and devastating experiences can be losing a spouse. It’s a journey that can be marked by sorrow and the reshaping of one's identity, but it’s not one you have to go on alone. For today’s conversation, I’m joined by author, veteran journalist, and speaker Leslie Streeter. Leslie is the author of the memoir, “Black Widow: A Sad-Funny Journey Through Grief for People Who Normally Avoid Books with Words Like "Journey" in the Title.” A native of Baltimore, Maryland, she and her work have been featured in The Washington Post, CNN, the Atlantic, and more.
During our conversation today, Leslie and I discuss the shifting stages of grief in the aftermath of losing a spouse, how having a village aided her through the death of her spouse, and what our society gets wrong about helping loved-ones through a grief experience.

Wed, 27 Mar 2024 - 408 - Session 351: Navigating A Career Change
One consequence of the pandemic was that it forced us to take inventory of all of the things in our life that we may be unsatisfied with, and for many of us, career is at the top of that list. Maybe you want to try on some new hats in the same field, or even pivot to a new industry entirely, but the question often is, how do I get started? Joining me today to answer that question is author and career coach, Janice Sutherland. Having successfully navigated multiple mid-career transitions herself, Janice specializes in helping mature Black women seek meaningful career and life transformations in their midlife.
During our conversation, Janice and I discussed some workplace red flags that may indicate it’s time for a career change, overcoming the financial and personal fears that stop us from making a necessary pivot, and how to set yourself up for success once a change has been made.

Wed, 20 Mar 2024 - 407 - TBG U: So You Wanna Be An Influencer?
Congratulations, you’ve been accepted into the inaugural class of Therapy for Black Girls University. Whether packing for a new year on campus, thinking through your gap year, enrolling in a community college, or grabbing your stoles for graduation, TBG U is here to help you thrive at this stage of your life and beyond.
I don’t know about ya’ll, but whenever I’m at a party, dinner, or even just going out with my friends, it’s become habitual to post something about it on social media. And though there’s nothing wrong with keeping the girlies updated on my moves, in this day and age, it’s important to know what’s good to share and what could potentially impact your future if the wrong eyes see it.
To talk through this with me, I’m joined today by Brooklyn-based Gen-Z lifestyle content creator, Cedoni Francis. Cedoni has worked with a variety of brands such as Vaseline, Disney and Marshalls, and through sharing her journey — from tech girl, to laid-off tech employee turned full-time entrepreneur, and incoming MBA student. Cedoni is creating content specifically for women in her age range, empowering and inspiring them in the process.
In our conversation today, Cedoni shares her do’s and don’t’s for posting on social media, setting boundaries around what the public gets to know about vs. what’s kept private, and dealing with haters when posting online.

Tue, 19 Mar 2024 - 406 - TBG Library: "You Get What You Pay For"
It’s time to make some space on your bookshelf for a new addition because we’re back with another TBG Library pick. Today’s pick is the debut book of essays by award-winning author Morgan Parker, titled, “You Get What you Pay For.”
Morgan Parker is a poet, novelist, and author of works such as the young adult novel Who Put This Song On? and the poetry collection Magical Negro, which won the 2019 National Book Critics Circle Award. In You Get What You Pay For, Morgan traces the difficulty and beauty of existing as a Black woman through American history, from the foundational trauma of the slave trade all the way up to Serena Williams and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Morgan joins me today to discuss what it means to experience hypervisibility as a Black woman regardless of class, how as a teenager she advocated for her own mental health with her parents, and the ways in which conversations with her therapist influence her writing, and vice versa.

To shed light on this experience and share resources for bereaved parents, today we're joined by Grief and Clinical Trauma professional Dr. Nyasha Grayman. Dr. Grayman has over 20 years of clinical experience working with African Americans as an independently licensed LCPC in the state of Maryland.
During our conversation, Dr. Grayman shares ways for parents to honor their child after their passing, strategies for community members to show up for bereaved parents, and how traumatic grief symptoms can show up differently in Black women.

Wed, 28 Feb 2024 - 402 - TBG U: Lock In with LinkedIn
Congratulations, you’ve been accepted into the inaugural class of Therapy for Black Girls University. Whether packing for a new year on campus, thinking through your gap year, enrolling in a community college, or grabbing your stoles for graduation, TBG U is here to help you thrive at this stage of your life and beyond.
Your professors and older mentors have probably nagged you at least once about creating a LinkedIn profile, and while it may be easy to roll your eyes at this request, when utilized correctly, professional platforms like LinkedIn can be your gateway into securing your next internship or job opportunity.
Joining me today to discuss how she’s leveraged online platforms for career success is photographer and full-time student Denise Stephanie Hewitt. Since her debut magazine cover for Marie Claire at 17, Denise’s work has graced Vogue, Hypebae, V Magazine and more. Denise was dubbed “The NYU Student Ditching Class to Shoot the Met Gala” by Cultured Magazine.
In our discussion today, Denise and I explore what things should and should NOT be on your LinkedIn, how to strike a balance between personal identity and professionalism, and advice for impressing your employers in an internship.

Tue, 27 Feb 2024 - 401 - Session 347: Black Women Expats
Have you ever dreamed of a meaningful life abroad, where your days are spent basking in local natural wonders and surrounded by new language, food, and culture? A kind of life that swaps your career-driven lifestyle for a life-centric existence? While it may sound like a whimsical fantasy, it is indeed possible to plan a life you love in another country.
Proof of that are today’s guests, Roshida Dowe and Stephanie Perry. Both women are passionate proponents of career breaks, sabbaticals, and grown-up gap years. In 2020, they founded the ExodUS summit, an organization that shows Black women ways to plan their exodus, all while fostering community. Since the creation of ExodUS Summit, hundreds of their members have taken a career break, moved abroad or begun living nomadically. During our conversation , Roshida & Stephanie answer all the questions you might have around financing your move abroad, pouring into the local community as a foreigner, and announcing your sabbatical to your employers and family.

Whether packing for a new year on campus, thinking through your gap year, enrolling in a community college, or grabbing your stoles for graduation, TBG U is here to help you thrive at this stage of your life and beyond.
Last year, videos of a flooding at Clark Atlanta University went viral. I know I’m not the only one who sees videos like these and wonders how the climate crisis will continue to impact me and my friends who are in college.

Wawa is the founder and executive director of Black Girl Environmentalist, the largest national organization dedicated to empowering Black girls and women in the climate movement.
She has been recognized as a Glamour College Woman of the Year, a Forbes 30 under 30 recipient, and was featured on the January 2023 cover of Vogue alongside Billie Eilish and 7 other climate activists.
In our conversation today, Wawa breaks down some key terms relevant to the climate crisis, ways we can get involved with the environmental justice movement on our campuses, and why it’s important for college students in particular to care about climate change.

Wed, 10 Jan 2024 - 391 - Session 340: Starting to Sew
There are an endless amount of studies that show how hobbies can be beneficial to our mental health and wellness. However, it can be understandably difficult to choose what hobby to take on, or even know where to start. If this sounds like you, then don’t fret, because in this first part of our January Jumpstart mini-series, we’re highlighting sewing and breaking down everything you need to know in order to make it your new year hobby.
Joining us for this conversation is Lisa Woolfork, a scholar, sewist, community organizer, and podcaster. She is the founder of Black Women Stitch, the sewing group where Black Lives Matter. She is also the host and producer of Stitch Please, a weekly audio podcast that centers Black women, girls, and femmes in sewing. Lisa and I chatted about the supplies you should invest in as a beginner sewist, how you can make time for sewing in your busy life, and how sewing can teach you lessons in self-compassion and forgiveness.

Wed, 27 Dec 2023 - 389 - TBG U: Navigating Helicopter Parents
Congratulations, you’ve been accepted into the inaugural class of Therapy for Black Girls University. Whether you’re packing for a new year on campus, thinking through your gap year, enrolling in a community college, or grabbing your stoles for graduation, TBG U is here to help you thrive at this stage of your life and beyond.
Winter Break has either commenced or is about to commence at most universities. If you’re a student, then you know that the transition of having your own dorm room and being able to go out whenever you want to coming home and having a curfew can be a rough experience. For this month’s episode, I wanted to put together a roundtable discussion with other college students to affirm and share our own experiences navigating our relationships with our loved ones in college.
Today's episode is titled Navigating Helicopter Parents.
What's a helicopter parent? A helicopter parent is a parent who pays very close attention to their child's experiences and problems, especially at educational institutions.
Joining me for this discussion are Zoe Rose and Heaven Holloway. Zoe is a junior Journalism Major and English Minor attending Hampton University. She currently works as a writer for HER Campus. Heaven is a current grad student earning her Master’s of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy. She recently graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in African American Studies.
In our conversation today, we lament the woes of having helicopter parents, provide tips for students trying to set healthy boundaries with their caregivers, and share some of the upsides of having an involved parent.

Thu, 21 Dec 2023 - 386 - Session 338: Getting Ready for The Color Purple (2023)
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
As we eagerly anticipate the upcoming musical adaption of The Color Purple, I’m sure I’m not alone in deciding to rewatch the original film in preparation. From the iconic sisterhood between Celie & Nettie, the showstopping beauty of Shug AVery, and the lessons we learn about trauma and resilience, it’s clear why this film still resonates with so many of us today. For this conversation I was joined by TBG’s Community Assistant, Nyesha, to discuss our memories of watching the original film, our favorite characters and moments, and what we’re looking forward to in the upcoming adaptation.

Thu, 07 Dec 2023 - 376 - Session 336: Black Girl Nerds
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
Can you think of a time when your nerdy interests were healing for you? It could be that comfort anime that always brings your spirits up, the video game you play when you want to escape the world, or that time when you knew you looked good as hell cosplaying at a convention with your besties. To chat with TBG about all things fandom & wellness, today we're joined by author, worldbuilder, and nerdy creator Jacque Aye. Jacque is a vocal supporter of mental health awareness and self-care amongst Black women, advocating for those suffering from depression and social anxiety. In her fiction work, she writes about women with a surrealist, magical touch.
Some of the themes that came up in today’s conversation include how to cultivate a community within fandom spaces, the importance of showing up as one’s true, nerdy self, and the ways in which our favorite games and TV shows can make talking about mental health issues more accessible.

Mon, 04 Dec 2023 - 371 - Session 335: Navigating Painful Emotions Around the Holidays
While Andy Williams famously proclaimed this to be the most wonderful time of the year, we know that the holiday season can be more than a little stressful for many of us. Whether we’re navigating changing traditions, grieving the loss of a family member, or considering opting out of the holidays entirely, the question becomes how to communicate these feelings to our family members, friends, and others we may usually celebrate this time with.
Joining me to help sort out these holiday-induced stressors is returning guest Nedra Glover Tawaab. Nedra is a licensed therapist, sought-after relationship expert, and the author of New York Times bestsellers Set Boundaries, Find Peace and Drama Free. Nedra has appeared as an expert on Red Table Talk, The Breakfast Club, Good Morning America, and the CBS Morning Show, just to name a few. During our conversation, Nedra and I discuss ways you might share a grievance with a family member without severing the relationship, navigating holiday-induced grief, and communicating a change in tradition or a decision to stay home for the holidays.

Wed, 29 Nov 2023 - 370 - TBG University: Majorette Magic at USC
Congratulations, you’ve been accepted into the inaugural class of Therapy for Black Girls University. Whether packing for a new year on campus, thinking through your gap year, enrolling in a community college, or grabbing your stoles for graduation, TBG U is here to help you thrive at this stage of your life and beyond.
If you’re as chronically online as I am, you may recall a viral video from 2022 of USC’s first-ever majorette dance team, the Cardinal Divas. Leading this groundbreaking team is Princess Isis Z Lang, a senior Musical Theatre major at the University of Southern California, a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and my guest for today’s episode.
In our conversation, Princess and I discussed the inspiration behind the founding of the Cardinal Divas, how Princess manages a work/life balance as a student leader, and the importance of creating a space for Black students at a PWI.

Tue, 28 Nov 2023 - 369 - Session 334: Brainspotting
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
In passing, you’ve likely heard the phrase, “the eyes are the windows to the soul.” But did you know that there is an emerging body-based modality that works to process client trauma through movement in the eyes? It’s called ‘Brainspotting,’ and today’s guest is here to share all about it. Nicole Bryant is a licensed Mental Health clinician practicing in North Carolina who specializes in neuro-psychotherapy and is currently a Certified Brainspotting Practitioner.
In our conversation today, we discuss the science behind Brainspotting, how Brainspotting can serve as an alternative for clients dissatisfied with talk therapy, and why she believes communities of color could benefit most from this treatment.

A few weeks ago, Megan Thee Stallion released her first self-funded title, "Cobra", which shares a glimpse into how she's been feeling the past few years and some of the mental health challenges she's experienced. I was very moved by the song and wanted to share a few thoughts for consideration.

Wed, 08 Nov 2023 - 366 - Session 331: Intergenerational Friendship w/ Ca’ren & Bettye
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
As the seasons begin to change we’re taking another good look at the sister- friends that have carried us this far into the year. What better way to celebrate friendship than to showcase how Black women of all ages have fostered supportive, uplifting, and life saving bonds? It’s no secret that over here at TBG, we believe “Sisterhood Heals” and today’s guests are a perfect example of the liberating impact our connections have. Joining me for today’s conversation are community members Ca’ren Hudson & Bettye Holt-Haskins. This godmother-goddaughter duo are representative of an intergenerational friendship with an age gap of 47 years. We chatted about their transition from godmother and daughter to best friends, what friendship looks and feels like when operating as equals, and the multitude of benefits in making friends in every age group.

Wed, 01 Nov 2023 - 365 - Session 330: RENAISSANCE Reflections
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
Last year, Beyonce blessed us with her album ‘RENAISSANCE,’ and this year, she opened us up to her glittery, futuristic world with the RENAISSANCE World Tour. From the the viral “everybody on mute” challenge, to the collective silver fashions, and the all-around joy cultivated, it’s fair to say that the RENAISSANCE World Tour was a whole cultural phenomenon.
To reflect on our respective RENAISSANCE World Tour experiences, I’m joined today by TBG team members Lex, Nyesha, Ellice, Jayna, & Cindy. In our conversation, we chit-chat about our favorite tour performances and moments, gush over the legend that is Blue Ivy Carter, and share our predictions for the newly announced RENAISSANCE Tour movie.

Wed, 25 Oct 2023 - 364 - TBG University: Black Women In Art
Congratulations, you’ve been accepted into the inaugural class of Therapy for Black Girls University. Whether you’re packing for a new year on campus, thinking through your gap year, enrolling in a community college, or grabbing your stoles for graduation, TBG U is here to help you thrive at this stage of your life and beyond.
If you’re an art major, the question of, “what are you gonna do with your degree?” is likely all too familiar. You also may have experienced feelings of uncertainty and doubt, wondering if you truly can make a living in the art space. Though none of us can predict the future, it can be empowering to see images of Black women who are already succeeding in the arts.
An example of that is today’s guest, Kaci Merriwether-Hawkins. Kaci is a Dallas-based visual storyteller and founder of Black Girls in Art Spaces. Black Girls In Art Spaces was launched in July of 2022 with the mission of holding a digital and IN REAL LIFE space for Black women to nurture their creativity, as well as champion Black artistry and Black stories. She’s been blessed to work alongside brands like Beats by Dre, Adobe, Nike, Apple, and more.
In our conversation today, we explore the obstacles faced by Black women in the art industry, the importance of having a strong network, and how simply being yourself can be the first step in securing your dream art job.

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
The 2024 election season is rapidly approaching, and while we know just how important it is for Black women to use our voices – and our vote – in any election, we also recognize that staying informed can be difficult when the news seems bleak. To help make things easier, we’re here to break down some key factors you need to know ahead of this critical election cycle. To give us this rundown, I’m joined today by award-winning political journalist Errin Haines. Errin is the Founding Mother and Editor at Large of The 19th, a nonprofit, independent newsroom focused on the intersection of gender, politics, and policy. She is also an MSNBC Contributor and former writer for The Associated Press, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and Orlando Sentinel. In our discussion today, Errin breaks down the issues that are on the ballot for Black women voters in 2024, how to tell if a news source is trustworthy in the age of misinformation, and ways to stay informed while protecting your mental health & wellness.

Wed, 11 Oct 2023 - 360 - Session 327: Navigating a Breast Cancer Diagnosis
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
This October, TBG is celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month by sharing resources and celebrating the experiences of survivors. Studies have shown that breast cancer disproportionately impacts Black women. However, a breast cancer diagnosis does not have to equal a death sentence. Joining me today is patient advocate and breast cancer thriver Marissa Thomas. Marissa was diagnosed in 2015 with stage II breast cancer and is now the co-founder and CEO of For The Breast of Us, an inclusive online community for Women of Color impacted by breast cancer. During our conversation, Marissa and I discussed her experience as a breast cancer survivor, the importance of family and how a parent can relay their diagnosis to a child, and embracing changes in your body and personhood after breast cancer.

Tue, 26 Sep 2023 - 357 - Session 325: ICYMI, Women, Agency, & Pleasure
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
It’s Sex Positive September, and in celebration, we're diving back into our catalog to when Dr. Lexx Brown-James joined us to discuss Black women’s sexuality agency and pleasure. When this episode was initially released, Cardi B & Meg the Stallion had just dropped WAP and the single set the internet on fire. In a new timely release, Meg and Cardi are back with another hit, "Bongos,” a sex-positive anthem perfect for celebrating Sex Positive September. In this episode, Dr. Lexx and I tackled the stereotypes often associated with Black women's sexuality, shame, respectability politics, and agency's role in sexual liberation. We also explored ways to confront our sexual shame and foster healthier attitudes toward sexuality for the next generation.

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
Deciding to enlist in the military is a huge decision, and when you have a family, that choice may come with changing dynamics, tough conversations with children, and anxiety for spouses that are left behind. However, this isn’t a battle you have to fight alone. To shed some light on this experience, and share the resources that are available to military families, I’m joined by United States Navy Veterans Kasey King and Dr. D’andria Jackson, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, respectively.
In our conversation today, we discuss strategies for explaining military deployment to young children, ways for military spouses to practice self-care, and how to help spouses reintegrate into the home after time away.

Fri, 18 Aug 2023 - 350 - Session 320: Utilizing Psychedelics for Chronic Pain
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
When you think of psychedelics, you may conjure images of magical mushrooms and colorful hallucinations, but did you know that psychedelics are being used in the healthcare space to treat individuals who suffer from chronic pain, anxiety, and depression? To dive into the world of psychedelics and their medical utility, this week I'm joined by Dr. Danielle Doyle,a double board-certified anesthesiologist and pain doctor dedicated to providing comprehensive integrated wellness, psychedelic education, and services for individuals dealing with chronic pain. During our conversation we discussed how psychedelics such as ketamine are effective for patients who deal with chronic pain, how Dr. Doyle and others are working to increase equity in psychedelic care, and how to discover if ketamine care is the right course of treatment for you.

Last week we started a very important conversation to help with demystifying what we know about menopause. Joining me for part II of this conversation is Dr. Chrissy Freeman. Dr. Freeman is a 2nd-year OBGYN resident physician currently working in California. In our conversation we explored common misconceptions created around menopause, how menopausal symptoms can show up differently for Black women, and what health risks menopausal individuals should be looking out for.

Wed, 09 Aug 2023 - 348 - Session 318: Demystifying Menopause, Part I
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
Simply uttering the word “menopause” can result in feelings of dread for anyone born with a pair of ovaries. Hot flashes, sleepless nights, and painful sex are some of the many transitions that we associate with getting older and experiencing menopause. But menopause doesn’t have to be the secretive, painful experience that so many of us were raised to view it as, and today’s guest is one of the many Black women working to erase its stigma.
Omisade Burney-Scott is a seventh-generation Black Southern feminist, storyteller, and social justice advocate. She is also the creator and curator of The Black Girls’ Guide to Surviving Menopause. During our conversation, Omisade and I discuss how to navigate the transition into menopause, dealing with feelings of grief as a result of experiencing menopause, and how to start intergenerational conversations around the menopausal experience.

Wed, 02 Aug 2023 - 347 - Session 317: Intergenerational Friendship w/ Essence & Franceli
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
It’s the summer of sisterhood, and what better way to celebrate than to showcase how Black women of all ages have fostered supportive, uplifting, and lifesaving friendships? It’s no secret that over here at TBG, we believe that “Sisterhood Heals” and today’s guests are a perfect example of the liberating impact our connections have.
For today’s conversation, I sat down with intergenerational besties Essence Atkins and Franceli Chapman. Essence has been a constant presence in our living rooms since the mid-’90s, starring in classics like “Smart Guy,” “Malibu Shores,” “Half & Half,” and “Are We There Yet.” Franceli is an award-winning Afro-Latina ‘Artivist,’ using her voice to speak on the need for inclusion and diversity in Hollywood. During our conversation, Essence and Franceli share the lessons they’ve learned from each other as a result of their 15-year age gap, their keys to maintaining a long-lasting sisterhood, and how they’ve navigated friendship in the entertainment industry. Please note that this interview was recorded prior to the commencement of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Wed, 26 Jul 2023 - 346 - Session 316: Celebrating the Legacy of Black Women In Hip Hop
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
2023 marks the 50th anniversary of hip hop, a genre that has transcended time, age, and language barriers. As we celebrate some of our favorite artists – from the Lauryns, to the Missys, to the Cardis – we also want to spend some time highlighting the Black women executives who work behind the scenes, changing the game one move at a time.
Joining us for today’s conversation is Tracey Waples, a former senior music executive who has architected the sale of over 100 million albums and the success of a host of major stars. Her resume includes names like Rihanna, Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, Method Man, and more. In 2014, she founded the music consulting firm DNA Creative and continues to mentor young women in music. During our conversation we discussed how she kicked off and navigated her career in the music industry, reconciling with hip-hop’s complicated relationship to sexism and misogyny, and the importance of including women’s stories and contributions in the history of hip-hop.

Wed, 19 Jul 2023 - 345 - Session 315: Navigating Interracial Relationships
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
When it comes to dating outside of your race, Black women are up against cultural stigmas, thoughts of missing out on Black love, fear of losing our “Black card,” and disapproval from family, friends, and social media. How many of these sentiments against interracial dating are reasonable things to consider, and how many are blocking us from finding what could be true love? To answer these questions and more, I’m joined by Dr. Racine Henry. Dr. Henry is a licensed marriage and family therapist whose practice focuses on Black, interracial, and non-monogamous couples.
In our conversation, we unpack both the common and unanticipated conflicts experienced in interracial relationships, things to consider before and while in an interracial relationship, and how to navigate disapproval from family, friends, and society at large.

In observance of Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, Therapy for Black Girls in collaboration with our philanthropic organization, the Holding Space Foundation, are teaming up to delve into the ways Black women from various generations connect, foster friendships, and evolve together through our campaign, Generations of Sisterhood. Throughout July, we’re gathering Black women from all ages to share their experiences, offer guidance, and celebrate the joys of sisterhood, with the aim of promoting healthy and constructive relationships.
In this week's episode we revisit the life and legacy of Bebe Moore Campbell who was instrumental in the creation of Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. Interestingly enough, this story is a moving depiction of the power in sisterhood and how lifelong friendships can continue even beyond death.

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
We’ve had dozens of therapists on the podcast sharing their perspectives on various topics, from friendships to meditation and even horror movies. But have you ever wondered what it takes to become a licensed therapist? Well, the road isn’t paved in gold…more like a few years of school and thousands of hours in supervision. But don’t fret, this third installment of our Becoming A Therapist series is for our community members who are therapists, sisters looking to enter the field, and everyone in between.
Joining me today are therapists Dr. Kimberly Applewhite, based in Utah, Dr. D’Andria Jackson based in Ohio, Dr. Donna Oriowo in Washington D.C., and Josephine Ampaw-Green in Colorado. My colleagues and I got candid about our journeys and talked about the different ways to market yourself and increase your caseload, how to navigate social media and ethics, and weighing the options between starting your own private practice or working in a group practice or agency.

Wed, 14 Jun 2023 - 340 - BONUS: Black Girls React to The Little Mermaid
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
So many of us have been patiently waiting for the arrival of the live action remake of Disney’s Little Mermaid. The 1989 classic has finally sailed back to the big screen but this time reimagined with a new leading lady, a Black Ariel, brought to life by Halle Bailey. To celebrate the release of the film, we partnered with Valencia Seuell, the founder of Elite 23 International, a non-profit Chicago-based organization dedicated to empowering and uplifting women and young girls around the world to send a group of young lades to see the film on opening weekend. Four of them then joined me on the podcast to share about their experiences watching the film and what the film taught them about life. Today on the podcast I’m joined by Caleigh, Sa’Mya, Ameri, and Kennedee.
This episode does contain spoilers so if you haven’t had the opportunity to see the film yet, put this episode on pause and come back to it later.

We’ve had dozens of therapists on the podcast sharing their perspectives on various topics, from friendships to mediation and even horror movies. But don’t fret; this second installment of our Becoming A Therapist series is for our community members who are therapists, sisters looking to enter the field, and everyone in between.
Joining me today are psychologists Dr. Kimberly Applewhite, based in Utah, and Dr. D’Andria Jackson based in Ohio. My colleagues and I got candid about our journeys and talked all things personal development, business administration, insurance paneling, and more.

Wed, 03 May 2023 - 333 - Session 304: On the Couch with Paige Alexander of Hulu's Unprisoned
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
If you’re all caught up on Hulu’s new hit, Unprisoned, then this is the episode for you. Starring Kerry Washington as Paige Alexander and Delroy Lindo as her father Edwin, Unprisoned is a funny and realistic look at what happens when Edwin is released from prison and moves in with Paige and her son Finn. We haven’t had one of these in a while but Paige’s character was the perfect one for another on the couch episode! Joining me today to chat about what might happen if Paige came to her office for therapy is Dr. Lexx Brown-James. Dr. Lexx is a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist and an AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator and Supervisor.
Dr. Lexx and I chatted about some of the issues she’d explore with Paige in therapy, how attachment styles impact our relationships, what reparenting and inner child work looks like in therapy, and how Paige’s career as a therapist might impact how she showed up as a client. This episode does include spoilers so if you haven’t watched, please hit pause until you’ve had a chance to finish the episodes.

Tue, 25 Apr 2023 - 331 - Session 303: How Trauma Affects the Brain
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
Due to the dedicated work of so many brilliant scientists like our guest today, we have learned and continue to learn so much about how the traumatic experiences of our parents, grandparents and other ancestors are passed down. Today we’re diving into an exploration of intergenerational trauma with our guest, Dr. Bianca Jones Marlin.
Dr. Marlin is a neuroscientist and Herbert and Florence Irving Assistant Professor of Cell Research at the Zuckerman Institute at Columbia University in New York City. She studies how information learned can be passed down to future generations through transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. It's all about understanding how traits and behaviors are passed on through generations, shaping how we act and behave. During our conversation she breaks down the science behind generational trauma and how trauma manifests in our bodies, brains, and everyday lives.

Wed, 01 Mar 2023 - 320 - Session 295: A Conversation On Healthy Friendships with Devi Brown
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
Y’all! My debut book, Sisterhood Heals, will be out on June 27, 2023 and you can officially pre-order your copy right now at sisterhoodheals.com! This is such a huge accomplishment and I can’t wait for all of the incredible conversations I know we’re going to have once you get your copy and can check it out.
In honor of this huge milestone, I wanted to share a very special conversation with you this week. At the end of last year, Wellness educator, Author, and Podcast Host, Devi Brown, who’s been a guest here on the podcast a few times, invited me to be a guest on her podcast, Dropping Gems. Devi didn’t know it at the time but I was struggling with edits to the book and this one conversation with her reinvigorated my spirit and gave me a whole new excitement about the material. It felt like she had seen the pages even though it wasn’t yet done. I feel like that’s how sisterhood works sometimes, you don’t always know what you need and then a sister shows up with an answer you weren’t expecting. In this conversation we chatted about setting boundaries with compassion in friendship, reciprocity in friendship, and how having difficult conversations can often bring us closer.

Wed, 22 Feb 2023 - 319 - TBG Library: Black Archives: A Photographic Celebration of Black Life
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
We're back with another addition to the TBG Library, Black Archives: A Photographic Celebration of Black Life by Renata Cherlise. Renata is a multidisciplinary, research-based visual artist and founder of the digital archival project Black Archives, where she features visual histories and modern-day stories across the African diaspora. Today she joins me to chat about her debut photo book, her family’s long-standing love for archiving their history, and how you can get started archiving and documenting your own experiences.
