"There was a vast number of ships, absolutely vast. I can tell you that my throat went dry painfully dry, and my hands began to shake. I wasn't the only man to be affected that way, one of the very young lads began to retch as if he was going to be sick. It was the effect of pure fear."

Some excellent D-Day passages from a book I’ve been reading about the D-Day landings, D-Day the Battle for Europe.
"There was little sleep that night. The first squadrons were off in the night."
"There was a pause in the bombing attacks about four in the morning and my son climbed onto the wall to see what was happening. He started shouting, “Mummy, mummy, the sea’s black with boats. I knew that the invasion had started."
"We reached a landing craft and I was in a different world. All the men were wearing campaign ribbons and they were so calm. They were real men, real soldiers and I felt elated to be amongst them."
"I reached the sea wall and leaned against it to regain my breath. Other soldiers were doing the same. That was when I realised that some of our men were missing."

This officer has displayed great skill and determination throughout his tour of operations. One night in October, 1943, he piloted an aircraft detailed to attack Leipzig. On the outward flight violent electrical storms were encountered. Although the air speed indicator became useless and other equipment was rendered temporarily unserviceable, Pilot Officer Stevens went on to complete his mission. His persistence in the face of trying circumstances was most praiseworthy.

A brutal, firsthand account of the savage WW1 battle of Gallipoli, written by Sergeant Fred Reynard of the Isle of Wight Rifles.
He landed at Suvla Bay in August 1915.
The allied troops fought for the strategic waters of the Dardanelles, and the Turkish capital city of Constantinople, in the Ottoman empire.
Would the brave but over-confident allies find they’d bitten off more than they could chew in the face of opposition from the equally brave, confident and well-prepared Turks?
"Then the firing stopped and with a yell of 'Allah, Allah' the Turks charged. They bore down on us like fiends, and soon I was fighting for my very life."

Sun, 04 Dec 2016 - 1h 01min - 8 - 8 D-Day WWII poems of D E Gray
"We're having a marvellous time!"
When Company Sergeant Major Gray wasn't fighting for the Green Howards, sometime in 1944 he found time to compose some war poetry. Six linked poems paint a picture of the journey across the English Channel and onwards through Normandy, ending with a letter home to Doug's mum and dad, telling them what a marvellous time he was having.
Composed with a great sense of humour, these WWII poems make essential listening for any war buff.

Doug Gray being interviewed on TV in later years
Sun, 09 Oct 2016 - 39min - 6 - 6 D-Day Diary of D Gray Part 1
Doug Gray was there on D-Day and beyond. He wrote his diary and even wrote a diary entry on the day he won his military medal - before he knew he'd won it!
The diary’s been supplied by Doug’s family. The entries start just before D-Day and finish several weeks after, so it’s quite a rare historical record because soldiers were forbidden to keep diaries in case they got captured. Doug's WWII diary tells a really excellent story with drama, tragedy and humour.
17 June 1944:
"Poor old Topper runs into a Spandau and gets five bullets in him. Marvelous piece of work by an officer getting him out. Doc thinks he might pull through. Hope so, as he's the best Sergeant in the Battalion and hates Jerries more than anyone, on account of him seeing his brother killed next to him at Akarit."

"Every second was vital; let’s get out of this coffin! Our landing craft was getting so near now and we felt so helpless, enemy shells were now landing on the shoreline and machine gun bullets were raking the sand. Then, at the top of his voice, the helmsman shouted: ‘Hundred to go, seventy-five to go, all ready, fifty to go!"
