Shelby Baez, Ph.D., ATC, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. Dr. Baez is a certified and licensed athletic trainer with an expertise in psychology of sport injury and an approved non-certified mentor for aspiring CMPCs through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). Dr. Baez’s research examines the impact of psychosocial factors on health outcomes after sport-related injury, with a focus on patients after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Her lab examines the impact of psychosocial factors on biological outcomes, such as neurocognitive function, biomechanical alterations, and secondary injury risk. Her lab also seeks to identify clinically feasible and novel psychosocial interventions to improve health outcomes. Dr. Baez has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and other regional and national foundations to support her work. She is a member of AASP, the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), was the recipient of the AASP Doctoral Dissertation Award in 2020, and the recipient of the ACSM New Investigator Award in 2023.

His research interests are currently focused on mitigating risk for long-term sequelae following traumatic brain injury, with a specific focus on mental health issues. She has chaired 15 PhD dissertations and 20 MS theses focused on ACL risk and prevention. Dr. Shultz is a Fellow of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the National Academy of Kinesiology and the American College of Sports Medicine, and was inducted into the NATA Hall of Fame in 2015. Dr. Brian Pietrosimone Dr. Pietrosimone’s research focuses on understanding the multifaceted development of posttraumatic osteoarthritis following knee injuries. He is particularly interested in developing multimodal treatment strategies to prevent posttraumatic osteoarthritis in those who have sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Dr. Pietrosimone has published over 190 peer-reviewed original research manuscripts and has lectured nationally and internationally on the research he has conducted with his team.

Dr. Alicia Lacy is an assistant professor of athletic training in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Maine. Prior to her position at UMaine, she taught/co-taught various courses during her doctoral studies (UConn) and post-doctoral research fellowship (A.T. Still University) including Health and Medicine, Evidence-Based Practice, and Qualitative Research Methodology. She currently teaches Prevention and Care for Sports Injuries. Dr. Lacy’s research focus involves the use of active learning strategies to develop effective educational interventions and approaches within the field of athletic training that improve clinician practice and optimize patient outcomes. Dr. Abigail Bretzin is a certified athletic trainer (AT) and a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania in the Penn Injury Science Center. She is a collaborative member of the Ivy League-Big 10 Epidemiology of Concussion Study, and is a member of the COllaborative Neuropathology NEtwork Characterizing ouTcomes of TBI (CONNECT-TBI) Data Coordinating Core. Her primary research focuses on the epidemiology of concussion and traumatic brain injury (TBI), emphasizing socio-demographic factors related the injury including sex and gender differences, to inform areas for primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. Dr. Jaclyn B. Caccese is an Assistant Professor in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and a member of Ohio State’s Chronic Brain Injury Program. She completed her BSE in Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania, and MS and PhD in Biomechanics and Movement Science at the University of Delaware. Her research focuses on understanding the short- and long-term effects of contact sports participation and sport-related concussion with the overarching goals to inform public policy regarding youth sports participation and to improve outcomes in current and former athletes. Dr. Justin Karr is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Neuropsychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Kentucky in August 2020. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with a Neuropsychology Specialization at the University of Victoria in 2018, where his doctoral studies and research were supported by the Vanier Scholarship. He completed my clinical internship year at the Seattle VA hospital, and my postdoctoral training within the Harvard Medical School system at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. His research to date has focused on neuropsychological assessment methods, cross-cultural validation of psychological tests, cognitive aging, and the psychological and cognitive sequelae of brain injury.

Dr. Chandran is a quantitative Epidemiologist, and his research interests are in athlete health over the lifespan, with an emphasis on female athlete health. Dr. Chandran holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health from the University of Maryland, College Park. He completed his Master of Science in Epidemiology, as well as his PhD in Epidemiology at the George Washington University. Dr. Randy Cohen has been Associate Athletics Director for Medical Services at the University of Arizona since 2001. Before coming to Arizona Randy worked at Purdue University & University of Notre Dame. Randy has a degree in athletic training from Purdue University, a degree in physical therapy from the University of Illinois- Chicago and a doctorate of physical therapy from Simmons College. Randy has 30 years of experience in college sports medicine. He is the former Chairperson of the NATA College and University Athletic Trainers Committee.

Her research interests include prevention and education of sudden death in sport, establishing best practices in road race medicine, development of regional-specific heat guidelines for exertional heat illness prevention, and development of heat acclimatization guidelines for tactical athletes. William Adams is currently an Assistant Professor and Director of the Athletic Training Program at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. William has been a licensed Athletic Trainer since 2010 and has worked clinically in collegiate and secondary school settings. Dr. Adams’ research interests are focused on investigating various facets of exertional heat stroke, maximizing athletic performance in the heat and preventing sudden death in sport and physical activity.

Over the last 15 years she has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles on subjects related to work-life balance, professional commitment and retention, and professional socialization. Her work has focused on determining factors that contribute to work-life conflict for the athletic trainer working in a variety of settings as well as strategies that can minimize the negative impact of those conflicts. Dr. Singe’s research efforts have also included gaining an appreciation of the complex and dynamic process on how an athletic trainer gains understanding of their varied roles within the profession as a means to facilitate improved role inductance and continuance. Kristin McKenney is an athletic trainer at Emerson College. McKenney is a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer and also certified in AED and CPR. In her career, she also has two publications and presentations, one on Treatment for Orthopaedic Conditions and the other based on treatments surrounding Orthopaedic Conditions, specifically, Myofascial Release.
