- 417 - TPM Episode 381: Scotty Lago, Pro Snowboarder, Olympian, Hunter
Scotty Lago had a path to pro snowboarding that’s different than almost anyone I’ve interviewed. Most high school dropouts don’t have Olympic Medals to go along with a grip of X Games and Dew Tour hardware, but that’s what Scotty Lago did. Along the way, he was part of the legendary Frends Crew, he filmed with Grenade, he filmed with Travis Rice for the biggest movies in snowboard history, and he did it all while riding for Flow Snowboards. When all was said and done, Scotty didn’t retire into the sunset; he’s now following his other passion of hunting, and just like in his snowboard career, he’s already a sponsored hunter, and who knows how big that world can get for Scotty. This is a fun podcast with an unfiltered legend and former Flow TM, Andrew Mutty asks the Inappropriate Questions.

Mon, 06 May 2024 - 1h 09min - 416 - TPM Episode 380: Dane Tudor, Pro Skier
Dane Tudor has had an incredible pro ski career that’s been going on for 15+ years, and while he’s getting older, Dane shows no sign of slowing down ski-wise, and no brands seem to care for some reason. When I say no signs of slowing down, in 2009, when Dane was 19, he won “Male Performance of the Year,” a huge award in skiing. Then, in 2023, 15 years later, Dane won that same coveted award again. While that’s so rare, so is the fact that while he’s always found success in both Moto and skiing, nothing has ever been easy for him on the sponsor end. Maybe it’s because he didn’t grow up with a dad or because he was always traveling between Canada and Alaska and was isolated with homeschooling…I try and find out the answers on the show, and Colston VB asks the Inappropriate Questions.
Dane Tudor Show Notes:
5:00: Speedo’s, born into adventure in AK and Aus, the impact of not having a dad, and Red Mountain

Jake Hopfinger created a name for himself in skiing at the Kings and Queens of Corbet’s in Jackson Hole. The double backflip he threw there for a 3rd instantly made his name known worldwide. While the dollars and travel budgets are now coming in, Jake was once an aspiring D1 East Coast ski racer who could never finish a race. Jessica Sobolowski-Quinn is a lifer in the ski industry. She’s skied more powder than almost anyone on the planet over the past 20 years, which is what you’d expect from the owner of one of Alaska’s premiere heli operations, Points North. But Jess didn’t grow up chasing powder in helicopters; she was a D1 ski racer who made her way to Palisades after college. From there, she met famous friends, started skiing rowdy lines, lined up sponsors, and traveled the world to film for a decade and eventually reeled it all in to manage the family business she runs with her husband, Kevin Quinn. Mon, 15 Apr 2024 - 1h 21min - 413 - TPM Episode 377: Colter Hinchliffe, Pro Skier
Colter Hinchliffe is living proof that the Aspen rockstar ski bum dream not only exists but it can thrive if your heart is in the right place. Colter spent his life surrounding himself with the only thing that mattered to him - Skiing. And between growing up near Aspen, dropping out of college to shred, moving to Alta, and returning to Aspen, he made the right contacts to make the dream come true. He was tending bar in Aspen, making handfuls of cash, allowing him to travel anywhere in the world at a minute's notice...That lifestyle put him in AK and eventually in a helicopter with the TGR crew when he was 25 years old, and that, combined with an unexpected Powder Magazine cover, helped Colter graduate from ski bum to pro skier pretty late in the game. It's a real-life Aspen Extreme Ski Bum Story.

The Pain McShlonkey Classic is arguably the most important event in all of skiing. The coveted Golden Saucer is up for grabs, and this year, 60 ski bladers had KT early ups on a Saturday pow day. The weekend's goal is to raise money in the name of our time's most important skiers and personalities. While Shane McConkey didn't look like an elite level athlete, he was way more than that: the funniest guy everyone knew, the most inclusive, the most awesome, and McShlonkey weekend is a way to celebrate his life and times with his friends at his home of Palisades. I put out a yearly podcast recapping the event and digging up old McConkey stories for your entertainment. This year, while you don't know all the names, the McConkey stories do not disappoint.

Life growing up was all about hard work, rodeoing, and, if there was fresh snow, skipping school to head to her home mountain of Sun Valley. Eventually, she switched from skiing to snowboarding, earned a scholarship for the Sun Valley Team, and things happened quickly. She went from being nobody to the World Cup to being named to the stacked US Team in a matter of years- she was always the underdog. But, in her biggest moment, she rode away with Olympic gold…and an injury took it all away. This eventually led to Andy finding snowboarding and moving his life to Breckenridge. He competed early and often and achieved pro status, but Hetzel won’t be remembered for contests, well maybe as the reigning World Mogul Champion. But, outside of that bump title, Andy and the skate-influenced crew he rode with, you know, the Palmer and Ranquet types, helped create the derelict culture of the sport when it wasn’t considered a sport, it was a lifestyle. Mon, 10 Oct 2022 - 1h 19min - 334 - TPM Episode 298: Drew Petersen, Pro Skier
Drew Petersen’s life and times have been defined by highs and lows from the time he was a little kid. On one hand, he lived in Colorado and developed a passion for skiing young. While that passion grows, so does depression and bipolar disorder, which is not diagnosed until much later in life. Combining that with a life of winning ski contests on the weekends and then returning to school as the smart, intense kid wasn’t the best combination. But Drew pushed through, made it as a pro skier, then had terrible accidents in the mountains, with a lot of head trauma and the suicidal thoughts became way stronger than they were at 9 years old. I’ve said enough, this is a heavy podcast, Drew is not afraid to share, and everyone should listen.

Mike Styskal, aka Styk, has lived his life as a creative force in snowboard design, but Styk is so much more than that. He's one of those people that exudes effortless cool: he always has a different unique look, and his sense of style is always on point. It's a characteristic that helped this Nebraska farm boy go from the small-town USA to the progressive city of Seattle and thrive. On the podcast, we talk about Nebraska, Burning Bush Studios, Ride, China, trouble, Draplin, and so much more. If you like business episodes, don't miss this one.

Tue, 27 Sep 2022 - 1h 23min - 332 - TPM Episode 296: Brant Moles, Legendary Skier
Brant Moles is one of those legends that have zero ego. While he’s a quiet guy, he’s not afraid to share what happened with his career…and in the first part of his career, he was a Wisconsin-based ski racer who went to an east coast academy with the goal of making the US Ski Team…but with all stories like Brant’s, politics play a role. When that happens, it usually doesn’t work out. The good thing is Brant Moles’ career isn’t remembered for racing; it’s remembered for winning extreme contests, filming with the heavy hitters of his time, and helping lobby the industry to make fat skis. Brant Moles helped change the sport of skiing with product and how he used it in Alaska, and his story is one that should have been told long ago….but this is his first podcast.

Michelle Parker has made a name for herself in the big mountains, but her roots go all over the board when it comes to sports and skiing. An elite soccer player with a big future, Michelle was forced to choose between soccer and ski racing at a young age. She chose ski racing, became a Junior Olympic Champion, and then quit racing in favor of the park and skiing powder. While Michelle competed for a bit, injuries made her realize that contests were not her thing and her focus shifted entirely to filming. She’s arguably one of the most important skiers this century. We talk about real issues in this one, and Michelle has a great perspective. Roy Tuscany asks Inappropriate Questions.

Tyler Bereman is a badass when it comes to riding his dirkbike but that is only part of what makes Tyler so special. He’s the kid who was born into a motorcycle family and while he didn’t have the same finances as his competitors to make his supercross dreams happen, after some ups and downs, he made it. But Tyler is so much more than that: He’s a 10 time X Games Medalist, a content creator, and an event visionary who’s imagination creates some of the most unique features on the planet. It’s a great story and Ryan Runke asks the Inappropriate Questions.
