Before we tackle the classic debate of Mics Vs Pickups, we have a big announcement for Ukulele Underground Streams. This is the last Ukulele Underground Podcast to be streamed on Thursday. The podcast will now alternate with the Aloha Friday Jams on Fridays. The guys explain why the change, and what that means for UU as a whole. The discussion of Mics vs Pickups is started when OG Member, Jim, ask what effects does Aldrine love or hate? Aldrine lists his go to effects and pedals, and what effects he uses for studio recording. We get into the main topic of the podcast by describing one of the major downsides of pickups: the dreaded thump. The team then explains the pros and cons of performing with a microphone. Planting Kuleana or responsibility; how are we being responsible for the land and the environment? This week, Uncle Joe Souza joins us to talk about planting Koa, Sustainably harvesting wood, ukulele features and more. Before they show you how to be a smooth Jam Partner, the team answers a question about the recording order of instruments, and explain why it's usually better to record the Rhythm Section first. This week's podcast, we're paying respect to Ukulele and Slack Key Legend, Hal Kinnaman. The team discuss Hal's Legacy and how he personally effected Ukulele Underground. Aldrine shares the famous Spider Warmup originally taught by Hal. Using Hal as an example, the guys talk about people coming to Hawaii and learning Hawaiian music. They also consider the importance of perpetuating culture, and why some people might guard traditions more securely. This leads to a conversation on respect when passing on culture. How do you overcome Stage Fright, and enter the Flow State? Aldrine starts off by suggesting a thought exercise to help focus during a performance. Kahai gives a tip from a magician, and while Aaron doesn't get stage fright, he still talks through things that help keep him calm. Aldrine then explains why Liquid Courage doesn't work for him, and Kahai reassures that most audience members won't even remember your mistakes. The guys go to the opposite end of the performance spectrum, and discuss the Zone or Flow State . They examine what it is, their theories on why it happens, and when it is most likely to happen. For the latter half of the podcast, the team tries to tackle the infamous ukulele "Quack" and how you can minimize it. They give their best tips for playing and recording practices to reduce the unwanted sound. This leads to a couple of tangents before the podcast is finished with a request for UU Shirt Suggestions.

For a podcast on Musical Maturity, we had to bring back one of the most "Mature" Musicians we know, Magic Mike. Before we dive into the importance of Musical Maturity, we ask Mike who his favorite street fighter character is and if he has a UU Shirt? This leads the crew to talk about the history of UU shirts and some of the rarest UU shirts. Mike shares his backstory of performing and how he got into music education. Members ask for help identifying what key their song is in. We bring back a Jazz comping question from last week to get Mike's take. This segues into Musical Maturity, giving bandmates suggestions, and when bands replace their members. The guys finally face the music, and show their Songwriting Challenge songs. The podcast is topped off with Mike trying to get the team to record an album, and giving a heads up for the upcoming events on UU.

Should you play different songs, or should you play the same song request again? These are the conundrums, the UU Team is tackling this week. It starts off with a questions from last week, "How often do you change your Set List?" Aldrine and Aaron share some examples of when they changed their Set List. Aldrine also explains why it's good to set audience expectation by cementing your songs. Another member asks what makes good opening songs? This leads a discussion on songs that are overly requested, and why they won't do them. After all this talk, the guys give the suggestion to play what you like and be true to yourself. Some tangents are taken on the way to a question about using Guitar Strings on an Ukulele. UU gives some cautionary advice on why you want to stick with ukulele strings. Join an Ukulele Club! This week, UU is singing the praises for Uke Clubs, and the Uke Community as a whole. A member gets the podcast rolling by asking for tips for their first in person Jam. The guys try to relieve this person's anxieties by explaining how welcoming 99% of Uke Players are. Aldrine suggest they get ready to talk about the specs of their uke, and gives his own experience of going to a Uke club incognito. The team also share their one "Weird" experience with a club, and how it still turned out great. After spending most of the podcast promoting Uke Groups, a member asks how to minimize squeak with wound strings. Aldrine gives his best advice, and the crew suggest some string alternatives to consider. With the open mic coming up, Kahai asks if Aldrine can explain his process behind making a Set List. While Aldrine demonstrates a good Set List with his own "Ice Breaker" songs, and "Leave them wanting more" songs, Aaron argues that an open mic is a great place for experimentation. How long does it take for your uke to Open up and be honest with you? It depends on how much time and emotional support you're offering your ukulele. Continuing from last week, Aldrine explains the different sonic qualities between his new uke and The Office Uke. The team also discusses how an instrument needs time and attention to really develop it's sound. This leads to Aldrine recounting some of his Favorite Sounding Ukuleles, and one ukulele in particular called "The Hammer". Next, A member asks where they should go after finishing Ukulele 102. While giving suggestions, the guys get a little sidetracked talking about the first UU Live Streams. In a Student Review, Aldrine reminds everyone about the importance of proper form. Finally, the boys reveal their songs for the Mad Libs Challenge. Ronin (浪人), a Samurai without a lord or master. Like 7 Samurai, this week's guest were Ronin before they joined forces with Aldrine and started their band, One-Time. Besides being Aldrine's old bandmates, Mark and Danyo are our good friends, and experienced songwriters. With such talented musicians as guest, the majority of this week's podcast is spent on songwriting advice: how to get started, equipment/software for recording, and what artist inspire their songwriting. Aldrine, Mark and Danyo also take a look back on their early days of recording and performing music. Everybody needs to start somewhere, so hopefully hearing what the guys had to go through will inspire you to start making music.

"Be in the Moment," Magic Mike delivers these words of wisdom and more on this week's podcast. We start off the podcast by catching up with Mike, finding out where he works now, and who are some people he's played with. A UU member asks for help figuring out the key of her original song. The answer isn't quite that simple, but Mike gives his best guest, and makes suggestions for how she can solo during it. The Team discuss other  examples of songs without straightforward keys, and Aldrine demonstrates the suggestions Mike gave for soloing. Another member asks Mike if you should let your bass player know beforehand when you are going to use chord substitutions? Mike recounts his own experience of playing with "Wacky" musicians, and why you want to be in the moment in case of surprise chord changes. One of musicology's greatest questions is inquired, "Are you culturally conditioned to feel certain emotions when you hear certain music, or is there something in the sound itself?" Mike gives examples of music from around the world that isn't so easily defined by emotions. Aldrine tries to stump Mike by asking about one of Jake's chordal choices. The guys prolongs Kahai's day by listing musicians Mike has played or worked with before.
