Wed, 08 May 2024 - 33min - 4114 - ENCORE: A New Revolutionary Technology That Can Predict Cardiovascular Risk With Precision, Part 1
Current ways of visualizing the coronary arteries with calcium scoring are limited: the presence of calcium doesn’t always determine risk; its absence doesn’t fully eliminate the possibility of soft plaque, which is actually more dangerous than stable calcium deposits. Dr. James Min is an expert on cardiovascular imaging and founder and CEO of Cleerly, a company that has developed an improved scan that can differentiate between dangerous unstable plaque, and more benign lesions. The test can be used to establish risk, and then medication and/or lifestyle modification with diet, stress reduction, exercise and supplements can be undertaken. Subsequent tests can yield a report card for how successful the preventive interventions have been. Dr. Min emphasizes that even in settings of high cholesterol the test can show minimal risk, reducing the need for cholesterol medication; conversely, people with low cholesterol may have substantial dangerous plaque. The Cleerly test promises to revolutionize our approach to cardiovascular prevention.

Dr. Barrie Tan, a Ph.D. biochemist who discovered GG, and Dr. David Brady, former director of the Human Nutrition Institute at the University of Bridgeport and author of numerous books and scientific papers, join us to discuss the roles of tocotrienols and GG in human health. Traditional forms of vitamin E supplements—the tocopherols—are being superseded by tocotrienols as more therapeutic forms of vitamin E. Tocotrienols have shown promise in oncology, for supporting liver health, and for protecting cell membranes as potent fat-soluble antioxidants. GG is ubiquitous as a precursor of diverse compounds including CoQ10, active vitamin K, sex steroids, and proteins. It is useful as a general preventive supplement as well as for specific applications like offsetting CoQ10 depletion in statin users, in metabolic syndrome, and for staving off sarcopenia. Drs. Brady and Tan share their experience in dosing Annatto products, which come in a variety of iterations, alone or teamed with other supplements.

Wed, 27 Mar 2024 - 33min - 4060 - ENCORE: Uncovering Psychological Roadblocks to Healing Back Pain, Part 1
Dr. John Sarno revolutionized medicine’s approach to back pain with his book, "The Divided Mind," in the 1980s. His thesis is that conventional therapies like surgery are over-utilized and don’t get to the root of the problem which is TMS—tension myoneural syndrome. Dr. Sarno died in 2017, but his disciple Dr. Ira Rashbaum carries on his work at NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation. The method pioneered by Sarno eschews even physical therapy, chiropractic and acupuncture, and instead focuses on uncovering psychological roadblocks to recovery. Dr. Rashbaum explains how stress literally robs aching muscles of oxygen and nutrients essential for pain resolution. Dr. Sarno was beloved by patients—including many celebrities—but reviled by many of his colleagues because he challenged medical orthodoxy which invariably treats pain as the consequence of fixable structural abnormalities. Followers of Dr. Sarno like Dr. Rashbaum argue that structural changes are normal, and not always the culprit lesions that trigger pain. Dr. Rashbaum reveals that the Sarno method works to alleviate many common syndromes, including headaches, TMJ, tinnitus, and IBS.

Wed, 13 Mar 2024 - 39min - 4042 - Mitochondria: The Energy Powerhouses of our Cells, Part 1
Today’s episode is a deep-dive on the mitochondria with a focus on the importance of free radical modification of cellular membranes. Membranes are the key to cellular aging. As we get older, the membranes in our cells accumulate damage caused by oxidative stress and other outside forces that result in the loss of mitochondrial function that can produce disease states, subjective fatigue, and have a direct bearing on aging. One of the nine pillars of aging is the deterioration of the mitochondria, the energy powerhouses of our cells. John Casey, co-founder and CEO of Nutritional Therapeutics, details how NTFactor® repairs membrane damage by replacing damaged, oxidized phospholipids with healthy, unoxidized phospholipids and returns cellular membranes to healthy function, reducing fatigue, repairing cellular damage, and reversing the effects of aging.

Fri, 08 Mar 2024 - 23min - 4037 - ENCORE: The Epidemic You Never Heard Of: Alpha-Gal Syndrome, Part 1
Sharon Forsyth is a patient advocate for recognition of Alpha-gal Syndrome. It’s a recently discovered condition (2009) which now has been confirmed to be the cause of symptoms in tens of thousands of individuals—who may represent the tip of the iceberg of a far more pervasive problem. Essentially, it’s a meat allergy, transmitted by tick bites, and sufferers experience rashes, GI complaints, even life-threatening anaphylactic reactions when they eat beef, pork, or lamb. But many non-meat products are tainted with alpha-gal, including dairy products, gel caps, and carageenan. Many processed foods contain traces of meat residue, which can trigger symptoms in sufferers; so, too, do personal care products, medications and supplements. Sharon describes her challenging quest to obtain a diagnosis—many health professionals are woefully ignorant of this condition.

Wed, 06 Mar 2024 - 32min - 4033 - Where Diabetes Treatment Has Gone Wrong and How to Fix It, Part 1
As far back as the sixth century B.C., physicians have looked to treat diabetes through diet. But delving into the history of diabetes, research shows at times conflicting and contradictory medical advice. Gary Taubes, author of "RETHINKING DIABETES: What Science Reveals About Diet, Insulin, and Successful Treatments," explores the history of diabetes research to look towards more effective treatment in the future. Taubes re-examines this research alongside the most recent studies to provide new insight that shows the current standard treatment is not enough. He argues for doctors to look beyond prescribing drugs to incorporate dietary and lifestyle changes as an essential part of treatment. He challenges conventional medical thinking to reveal the limits of medical science for diabetes treatment. His proposed changes could revolutionize how people live with diabetes and help the millions of Americans struggling for years to come.
