Today's throwback episode was such an exciting one for me! Desiree Hartsock's whole career has revolved around the industry of love beginning with helping brides find their perfect dress as a bridal stylist. You might also know her as the girl next door Bachelorette from season 9 but she's also an author of wedding planning book ‘My fairytale wedding’. Her business - Desiree Hartsock Bridal - was a huge success but she eventually closed it's doors in 2023 to focus on home educating her children and focus more on her calling to Ministry and speaking. 

What really made this interview special is the fact that Desiree had her little one with her. Zander was only a few months old at the time and he was ready to get in on our conversation too! Having him present really tied into our conversation about growing your business in the midst of change. I was also pregnant with my first baby so it was super motivating being around moms that continue moving towards their vision. It becomes more of accomplishing more in little spurts of time and using any free time wisely. You can't see but during the interview she had to breastfeed the baby and take care of her dog. It's reassuring to see that moms have super powers to run businesses and take care of life at home.

Change is inevitable. Trying to push through can cause more stress than meeting the challenge and adapting to the change itself. I’ve personally been through this and know that sometimes, letting go and finding another way around is best.

A little over 2 years ago I had Luly Yang, internationally recognized Seattle-based designer on my podcast. She shared her new project to create a travel line for the busy individual. A collection of clothing that could easily be rolled up in a bag yet stylish enough to wear day-to-day.

When COVID hit, her travel-wear line had to be put to rest to help the community. During that pause, her vision became clear. The switch in her project efforts moved towards athleisure wear to provide comfort and style with pieces that could easily be dressed up or down. Today we're talking all about what makes the modern man with Steve Warshaw - sobriety, parenting & modern dating. Steve and I met through a group of friends during COVID. It’s not enough to say new clothes can boost your confidence. When you set up the story, someone who wants that extra confidence boost can start to imagine it for themselves. In the end, the best way to understand it is to have a connection to the story. When you hear the promise of gaining confidence from a product or service that tells you, ‘if you do this one thing for seven days, you’ll find an increased confidence,’ you think, well, how do I know my confidence has increased? How do you measure this?

I want to share with you what increased confidence looks like because it can be different for everyone. Overall, increased confidence means showing up in your life differently, having different energy levels, getting more positive attention from peers, increased perception towards yourself, and so much more!

Sweater Care Products
The most popular comfy piece in your closet is a sweater. Whether you wear sweaters to work, around the house, or on a night out, this is a staple piece you want to keep around for a long time. It takes a little extra care to keep them in shape and ‘wearable’ in public.

Some sweaters last longer than others. If you buy a natural sweater made of 100% cashmere or alpaca, they’ll breathe easier and need fewer washes. If you buy or own a sweater with a mix of fibers, including polyester, you’ll find they need to be washed more often and hold onto odors more.

It is full-on sweater season over here. It snowed a few weeks ago, and I don't want to wear a blouse again until it starts warming up. Sweater options are abundant and available in many colors, neutrals, and styles. There are perfect options for work, casualwear, and every day. I wore a sweater every day last week, and I'm all for great trousers, pants, and warm sweater options right now.

As I work with clients through the shopping process, two questions have come up a lot: how do I invest in sustainable pieces, and how do I take care of my sweaters? I've researched and found the perfect passionate person who knows so much about this. 

Elisa Yip is the founder of SSkein, a sustainable luxury knitwear brand made with purpose and integrity. We met at the Bellevue Collection Fashion show through one of my best friends, who has been trying to hook us up for years. When I went to her home to try on her pieces, I fell more in love with the brand because of how well-made it was. I don't want to go into too much detail about her or Sskein. In this conversation, she shares everything you need to know about cashmere, alpaca, sweater care, how often to wash your sweaters, and so much more.

The importance of friendship. Goodness, there are so many reasons we need other women in our lives and so many reasons that strong bonds create just a mental health boost. My life this season has been the roughest in parenting. Who knew that toddlers go through the terrible twos? I’ve been in a huge struggle with getting her to bed, getting her to wash her hands, talking to her, getting her to daycare, going potty, and really struggling with every part of daily life that doesn’t involve playing or having her in my arms. 

I would be a total mess if it weren’t for my friendships this season. I haven’t felt like myself lately with the stress of it all, so I didn’t do any podcasts for the past couple of weeks. I don’t want to overwhelm you with it, and I also wanted to make sure I can come here and give you the best of me. Today, I’m still not on the other side of this struggle, but I feel more hopeful after journaling.

Most recently, I met Moni online. Through an Instagram message. The one message I sent her about how I admired what she’s doing in the eastside to bring women together ended up turning into a coffee date and working on a project together.

There is nothing better than meeting other women in our community that are doing amazing things like lifting others through events, networking, and helping other women change their life. When you talk to someone, and you know, this is my person? It’s such an exciting feeling because you can’t help but think of all the cool things you can do together and talk about. When looking for answers, the best way to look for them is within yourself. Writing has been such a therapeutic exercise for me. I’ve been journaling since I was a little girl because it helped me take out big and small feelings that I couldn’t express to others. This timeless collection of pieces you can mix and match for your life. Can you recreate this? It's such a trending topic to live life like a minimalist and have this small collection of pieces but what does that look like in real life?

This topic came up on TikTok, and I couldn't help but think about how unrealistic it is to believe that you can hold onto something without changing or wanting to change. I like mixing it up with other things, such as food, exercise routines, and morning rituals. I get a solid routine for a bit, something happens, or I want to try something new and replace what I was doing. I go through phases where I'm obsessed with peanut butter and jelly (in it right now). I've gone through a ton of peanut butter the past couple of months, but it's a phase, and then I find another snack to replace it that I love. I get bored.

The definition of a capsule wardrobe feels so limiting. Even the word capsule sounds like you are stuck in this tiny thing and can't get out, expand, or grow from there or you'll burst.

When I work with clients, I like to replace this wording with creating a foundation for your wardrobe. It feels freer and more solid—something you can have as a base and grow. Every new client I work with aims to create an excellent foundation for your wardrobe. With clients I've worked with for years, it's just maintenance here and there to make sure the pieces still fit their body and lifestyle.

The shock of how different styles are now, how do you know what works for you?

We are in such an interesting time with fashion. In 14 years of being a stylist, the only time I remember something like this happening was with leggings. 

I still remember bringing leggings into the fitting room 14 years ago and some clients were like, ‘they are so tight, I don’t know if I’d ever wear them’.

People were switching out of bootcut jeans and this was so new.

Right now in fashion, it’s all about the relaxed look. Relaxed blazers that flow, some people feel it might be frumpy. Or wide leg jeans and pants that take over your body, some clients feel like it’s too overwhelming on them.

The frequent question that has come up lately is, do I actually not like it or is it just so new and it’s something I will end up wearing all the time later.

As a stylist, I explore new styles as well and try new things and it is something that sometimes you question ESPECIALLY if you feel like there is so much newness to what’s out. I know it really feels like this for you if you haven’t really done much shopping in the past few years.

I'm all about spending money on the right things, which means making a list of what you need AND don't need this season. You want to be intentional with your purchases to give your style the update and impact you want to achieve this season. Even if you're on a budget, be intentional. When I think of the most stylish man I know, I think of my friend Richard. He has a mix of prep and a sharp classic look, but he can also get creative and make an outfit look put together with a mix of colors and prints.

I am grateful to also call Richard a friend, we’ve gone salsa dancing together, recorded a video about non-gender fashion and had so much fun trying things on in the fitting room, to being together at fashion parties. Without knowing it, you are actually in a cycle of shopping that you might not realize because it’s done out of habit. The average person first is attracted to a color before anything else. We can put that one to the test easily! Is there a color you can think of right now that is taking over your closet? It’s totally true! Mine is beige, I love a good beige, neutral. I love the elegance of it, how it looks against my skin color and I can pair it with all pinks, blacks, whites and lavenders in my closet.

Depending on how much of that color you have in your closet, now that you’re aware of this, you might want to go towards finding other colors to add to your wardrobe. Knowing our shopping patterns is so helpful in the process of finding what you need to purchase.

If you are stuck in a shopping pattern, you get stuck in a style that doesn’t serve you anymore. Once you’re aware of your shopping pattern, you can try something different or catch yourself when you’re about to fall into the pattern again.

Before getting into a blissful state of joy. There’s a big thing you need to do. You need to know, who do you want to be? I know it might seem like an obvious question but maybe it’s not. This is one of my favorite exercises because it creates pretty much instant results when you start changing up the things you want to do differently in your life. You’ll actually feel like you have the power to shift how things are going in your day-to-day, how you feel, how you see yourself. 

It’s like a journaled out vision board of yourself in the present. All the ways that you see this person you want to be, you are, and you can start acting in a way that reflects this.

Have you felt self-conscious about your body? Like everyone can see all your insecurities? It's totally common and as a stylist, I work with clients daily on dressing for their body. Yesterday, I worked with a couple that realized they needed new clothes. They were getting ready to pack for their 10 year anniversary trip and found that their closet didn’t have anything new or exciting that really fit them anymore.  In the process of shopping for each of them, they opened up about what they felt uncomfortable with. There is nothing more 

In this episode I unpack the big topics we talked about in our styling session yesterday including:

Men’s body and insecurities - I mean, this is a very important topic. It’s never really talked about, a lot of the focus is on women but men have insecurities too. They are less vocal about it but working with men, I get to hear all the things and also have to work through finding pieces that fit their body well. What we might find uncomfortable, might actually be an asset - In this case it’s not about clothing that is uncomfortable, but parts of ourselves we are uncomfortable with. Changing your story about your body and identifying new ways to see yourself are helpful.No ones looking -This isn’t to say that the way we feel in something doesn’t count because it definitely does! If a piece of clothing feels too tight, or doesn’t lay right on your body, you will be fidgeting and thinking about it the whole time you have it on. But there is something to keep in mind when shopping or trying on clothes. It’s not for other people, it’s for you.

How do you dress your body when you feel like nothing fits right? You feel like your legs are too short, your waist is too wide, your arms are too big, and your butt is too small. Seriously, I’ve heard it all from both men and women when it comes to body image.

When clothing doesn’t fit right we blame our bodies for being the problem when it’s really the clothing options that are the problem.

Do you ever stop to think about how far you’ve come in your life? I don’t think we always give ourselves credit for everything we’ve  accomplished or where you’ve been.

When I look around my home, my closet. I see a story of who I am now, when I look at photos in my past I know and understand that they are glimpses of me at that moment, always doing the best I could.

Give yourself grace as you move into new parts of your life. If you are in a season of making big changes for the better, remember that where you’ve been plays a role in how you were dressing and why. It’s a great way to see why it is you are wanting to change your style and move in a new direction
