Fri, 24 Sep 2021 - 09min - 132 - Episode 014: Don't Fixate on the Past
Be honest - how much time do you waste dwelling on the past, rewriting conversations and events in your head based on what you wish you'd done? You're not alone. We all fixate on the past, and that's ok, but it's important to learn from the past and move forward toward new successes.
In this episode I look at some steps you can take to get over the past and start looking ahead, including:
- Ask yourself, does fixating on the past help me or does it hurt me? Train yourself to look at the past as a learning experience. Find your inner Elsa and 'let it go'.
As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "the future is a mystery, the past is history, but today is a gift. That's why they call it the present."

Wed, 08 Sep 2021 - 13min - 126 - Episode 008: Putting Yourself First
I have often encountered individuals who are holding themselves back from reaching their potential, and it's usually because of anxiety, stress or self-doubt.
We are constantly balancing many different roles in our lives - parent, employee, spouse, friend - and in recent challenging times these different conflicting roles can take their toll.
How are you supposed to show up as your best self when you're feeling this way? The answer is pretty simple, and in this podcast I help you try and shift your perspective so that you start putting yourself first and improve your work-life harmony by implementing these two simple strategies:
1. Ask yourself the difficult questions... and answer them!
2. Take one hour each day for yourself.

Tue, 31 Aug 2021 - 10min - 120 - Episode 002: Business Not Personal
It’s very easy to think that you and your colleagues will be friends - after all you spend so much time together - but that’s not always the case. Don’t let someone else’s bad attitude or poor treatment of you or dismissal of your accomplishments undermine your achievements.
In today’s episode we’re going to talk about how it’s business, not personal when you’re in the workplace.
I wish someone had taught a class on “how to separate business from personal”. I would’ve signed up for that class and been in the front row! When I started in NYC at the #1 news market in the world, I was naive. I thought everyone would be my friend. I assumed if I was nice to someone they would be nice right back, but when I was climbing the ladder not everyone was nice, there was a lot of competition and I realized not everyone wanted to be my friend. It was kind of a rude awakening for this Canadian born and raised girl.
I learned pretty quickly that nice actions aren’t necessarily reciprocated and that the environment was competitive. This is why you need to speak up for yourself, make note of your achievements and don’t be afraid to let others know what you have accomplished and what role you played in the completion of a project -- you need to be your own best advocate!
The truth is, you and your colleagues don’t have to be friends. In fact, when a colleague is treating you badly, ask yourself, “would I even want to be friends with this person outside of work?” If the answer is “no” then keep repeating… It's business, not personal.
Point 1: Drawing a line between personal and work and sticking to it.
Point 2: “no” is a complete sentence.
Point 3: Dealing with customers that lash out.
Point 4: It’s okay if your colleagues don’t like you or approve of you.
Point 5: Speak up for yourself and not assuming others know your side of the story.
Here are the highlights from this episode:
{1:28} Have confidence in your abilities
(2:30} A rude awakening
{3:52} Separate business and personal relationships
{4:42} Be the person who lifts others up

Tue, 31 Aug 2021 - 08min - 119 - Episode 001: Creating Your Personal Brand
Welcome back to The Speaking Up Podcast. What if I told you that you already have exactly what it takes to create a strong, authoritative personal brand? You already know who you are. The key is to let everyone else know, too. And you can do this by creating a stand-out personal brand that shows you in your best light--all day, every day.
In today’s episode we’re going to talk about personal branding. It can feel like an intimidating topic, especially if you’re just starting out. But I can promise you that it’s not that complicated.
You’ll learn:
What a personal brand is and why it matters How I developed my personal brand using 3 simple but powerful questions The 5 life-changing steps to develop your personal brandWhen we hear the words “personal brand,” we often assume it refers only to entrepreneurs and influencers. This just isn’t true. Everyone has a personal brand. Everyone can benefit from learning about how to showcase themselves in a positive and empowering way, whether that’s on social media, in the boardroom, or on your LinkedIn profile.
Having a strongly defined personal brand instills a sense of credibility. It influences the way others see how you move through the world, both personally and professionally. It shows that you care how you show up in the world. It shows that you take pride in your image and believe in your own unique strengths and abilities.
It’s not a conscious thing. But people do respond differently to workers who show up ready to thrive, ready to bring something new to the table, rather than those who seem shy or standoffish. If you’re fading into the background, you’ll never climb the ladder.
I learned the hard way in broadcast journalism. There’s nothing scarier than reading off a teleprompter for the first time on live television. I had some missteps, and I probably missed out on some opportunities because I didn’t have the confidence in my twenties that I do now! But sometimes you don’t realize what you’re capable of until you’re forced to just… do it. Diamonds are forged under pressure, right?
Before I share my 5 life-changing tips to get started on developing your own personal brand, here are the 3 questions I asked myself to develop my own personal brand:
“What do I want to be known for?”
“What’s my story?”
“How will I show it?”
In the episode, I get into the detail of how the answers to these simple questions shaped my personal brand.
These are the five steps I recommend to my clients when they’re working on developing a personal brand. I walk them through these steps and help them design a strategic game plan.
In this episode I take you through these steps in more detail so that you can do the same.
Step 1: Define your purpose
Step 2: Decide on your desired outcome or vision
Step 3: Start creating your personal brand considering how you want to be perceived.
Step 4: Develop a strategy and craft your message.
Step 5: Execute your personal brand and tell your story.
No matter what space you occupy in the world, it all starts with a strong, solid sense of self. Whatever your desired outcome is, you’ll need a strong personal brand. It won’t happen overnight and you can of course start small by giving your digital presence a boost, asking thoughtful questions during meetings for example. Your confidence will shine through and give you an edge.
Here are the highlights from this episode: {1:54} What is a personal brand?
{4:50} Nothing we do in life is pointless
{5:57} What do you want to be known for?
{8:22} What is your purpose?
{9:35} Dress for the position you want
