- 129 - Bonus Episode – Pride Amid Prejudice featuring Necole Belanger
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional unceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.
It’s been a long time, but I’m so excited to have a conversation with Necole Belanger, Retired Command Chief Warrant Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Necole’s book, Pride Amid Prejudice, where Necole offers her story.
This is a story about pride, frustration, happiness, anger, shame, joy, prejudice. Necole and I will talk about how her desire to serve her country, to make an institutional difference, led to her sacrificing her values, to allowing herself be silenced, all for the desire to make a difference.
Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front is humbled to have been named #8 in the Top 20 for Best Canadian Leadership-themed podcasts for 2023.

But, how can we be emotionally intelligent? Trench Leadership has explored this question in the past, but it’s such a broad and diverse topic that in this episode, I’ve decided to try and break up the topic into smaller, bite-size pieces.
In this episode, you’ll hear from Ashley Valliére, a body specialist and mentor, who will talk about the connection between our physiological and psychological responses.

Happy leaders equate to happy teams.
We’ve all been part of amazing teams, the ones that we dream about being part of, often reminiscing about the “good ole days”. And we’ve had the opposite, being part of teams that we’d run away from, disregarding any amount of money to avoid being so unhappy.
In this episode, you'll hear from me, Simon Kardynal, your host, where we’ll talk about the power of happy leaders and happy teams. We’ll talk about how to be happy leaders and how we can create happy teams.

Partnerships are how we thrive, professionally and personally, allowing for deeper levels of trust and confidence in each other. And at the top levels of organizations, few partnerships are more integral to success than the relationship between the executive assistant and the C-suite executive.
You may be asking yourself, “Simon, Trench Leadership is meant to speak to emerging leaders, so how does talking to a C-suite team apply to emergent leadership?”
Here’s the thing, examining the EA/C-suite relationship can be helpful to understand when and how to create stronger teams. Now, that’s all great, but, how emerging leaders examine these teams?
Well, I have good news, in this episode, my dear friend, author, executive coach and mentor, Bonnie Low-Kramen,joins us to help emerging leaders dissect the EA/C-Suite partnership, helping us understand how these teams are so highly effective.
In this episode of Trench Leadership, we’ll be joined with Desiree McCarthy, the Executive Administrative Assistant to the CEO, and Kevin Ford my boss, Chief Executive Officer of Calian, and music lover, where Bonnie will have a fun and frank conversation with a real-world Executive partnership, exposing the strengths and methods used to create and maintain a powerful executive partnership.

Mon, 01 May 2023 - 102 - E81 – Personal and Professional Decluttering featuring Lisa Zawrotny
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional unceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.
I don’t like clutter. I don’t like having all kinds of extra things just laying around taking up space in my physical and emotional spaces.
Now, that’s not to say I don’t have all kinds of things floating around in my mind, or that I live a physical minimalist lifestyle, but I do like things to be neatly placed in their spot. The trick with this is that I sometimes become overwhelmed when I feel as though I’m overly cluttered.
And these feelings and preferences are not specific for me, most often, new leaders feel as though their ‘workspace’, in whatever way we are discussing, can feel cluttered, creating spaces where we can get tripped up.
So... how can we become uncluttered?
Well, I have good news because in this episode, you’ll hear from Lisa Zawrotny, a productivity and accountability coach who will talk about decluttering and how this clarity can lead to stress management, giving new leaders clear mind and body. Lisa will do this by offering her proven decluttering framework.

I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is thetraditional unceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.
As a leader you are ‘powerful’. Yet, ‘powerful’ is not a word we tend to use. We prefer using words like ‘leadership’, ‘decision-maker’, ‘go-getter’, ‘coordinator’. Why is that? What does ‘having power’ mean to you?
Have you taken the time to ask yourself how you are powerful and how your power can limit and help your team?
In this episode, you’ll hear from Laura Jansen, Learning & Development Director of Reticle Ventures Canada Incorporate and independent Teaming Facilitator, who will help emerging leaders explore how Power & Rank dynamics are linked to building an environment where teams can thrive. She will connect how power & rank plays into creating a teaming environment where all team members can contribute, feel a sense of belonging, and speak freely. Laura will provide insights and advice for leaders in how they can own their powers, in order to share them in a way that empowers their team.

Mon, 26 Dec 2022 - 81 - E64 - Putting Fear Into Perspective featuring Richard Blank
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.
Fear is the most basic of human instincts. We need it to tell us when to be cognizant of impending danger. The challenge with fear is that it can, and wants to, take over. Fear wants to keep us inside our comfort zones, keep us safe, secure in the knowledge that if we don’t push ourselves, we can’t get hurt.
But the question is, how can we, as leaders, harness the power of fear to not only survive, but thrive?
And so, in this episode, you’ll hear fromRichard Blank, CEO for Costa Rica’s Call Centre, who will talk about his experiences with fear in the workplace. Richard will use his personal and professional examples to talk about how emerging leaders can live with their fear, use it to create strong and powerful teams. Lastly, Richard will give practical advice to leaders so they can use their fear to help themselves and their teams thrive.

Mon, 05 Dec 2022 - 79 - E62 - Doing the Right Thing Isn't Always the Easiest Thing featuring Ryan van Haren
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.
Leaders are flawed people who experience the same gambit of personal and professional pressures that all team members go through. And quite often, leaders will ask their team members to stand up for what’s right at all costs. Leaders often extol the virtues of being a consummate professional, all of us striving towards being inclusive, open, and empathetic, with the highest level of integrity.
But how often do leaders practice what they preach?
In this episode, you’ll hear from Ryan van Haren, an Aviation Coach, Consultant and Corporate Pilot, who will talk about his leadership experiences, explaining the reality of how hard it can be to do the right thing in the face of many oppositions.

Mon, 28 Nov 2022 - 78 - Special Episode: Revisiting "Survivorship Bias (It’s not what you think) and Making Fully Informed Decisions featuring Simon Kardynal"
To continue celebrating one whole year of Trench Leadership, we are re-releasing another one of our favourite episodes. Take a listen to Episode 23, where Simon talks about survivorship bias.
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.
When I say the term survivorship bias, what’s the first thought that comes to mind? Most often, the response I receive is that of people using their personal and professional survival stories to help them make informed choices. And while this is a great answer, this is most definitely NOT what survivorship bias is about.
Survivorship bias is, in my opinion, one of the most vital biases that emerging leaders need to understand if they want to be truly open minded with their leadership decisions.
In this episode, you’ll hear from me, Simon Kardynal, your host, where I’ll talk about the basis of survivorship bias and then provide some examples of survivorship bias in action.
You’ll learn how to see this bias in yourself and your team, and then you’ll hear how to use this bias to yours and your teams’ advantage, making everyone more efficient.

Mon, 25 Jul 2022 - 62 - Creating Brain Trust for Teams: A Podcast Primer about Psychological Safety featuring Laura Jansen, presented by Reticle and Trench Leadership
Creating Brain Trust for Teams: A Podcast Primer about Psychological Safety featuring Laura Jansen, presented by Reticle and Trench Leadership.
“Psychological Safety” is a concept that gets a lot of buzz these days. Here’s the thing, psychological safety isn’t going away, in fact, it’s been around for generations, but it’s only recently that organizations have come to appreciate the value of a team in which all members, not just the leader, freely contribute their thoughts and ideas. Organizations are beginning to see the intrinsic value in the unique perspectives that everyone brings to the collective good of the team.
But, how can YOU create a psychologically safe environment?
To answer this question and more, please join this podcast primer with host Simon Kardynal (Trench Leadership) and his guest Laura Jansen (Reticle Ventures Canada Incorporated) as they explore the concept of psychological safety by answering the questions that are most often asked by leaders and team members.
What is it, really?
Why is it such a big deal these days?
Why is it not a given, even when your team is well-intentioned?
And, most importantly, how do you create and maintain psychological safety?
Laura takes us through how psychological safety is really about our naturalistic desire to take away disharmony and discomfort, either by controlling or dismissing different views, or by complying, being overly cautious, or staying quiet. She describes, using examples, how this naturalistic behaviour can be turned around by recognizing sabotage in team dynamics and by responding to those ‘hotspot’ moments, with a learning approach.
In this podcast, team leaders and team members will be offered practical tips to create a psychological safe environment to, such as: how to recognize patterns in your own team, how to hunt for alternative views and explore them, and how to do an effective check-in and check-out that ensures the issues are discussed during the meeting, not after.
We’re excited to offer this primer to psychological safety and get yourself engaged in becoming a skilled team member and leader in creating work environments where member’s views are explored, appreciated, a

I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.
We never know when or where our leadership journey will take us. Yes, we try our hardest to create long-term schedules, to control our own leadership destiny, but most often, we experience leadership opportunities in the wildest of moments, often coming at us from directions we never saw coming.

Mon, 06 Jun 2022 - 57 - E44 - Facilitating Your Team Discussion or Disagreement
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.
Being the leader means you’ll have to facilitate formal team discussions, and also facilitate team disagreements.
The dynamics that come with this responsibility are too numerous to mention, but in this hyper-aware social climate we find ourselves in right now, it’s very easy to forget two basic principles: First, be kind and Second, it’s ok if we don’t agree with each other.
And so, in this episode, you’ll hear a panel conversation from a team of professionals who will discuss what can be a highly contentious and divisive topic: Faith. Specifically, we’ll talk about how faith affects, or doesn’t affect, our leadership styles.
We’ll have this talk so emerging leaders can hear, in real time, how people can have very different perspectives and still respect each other as people and professionals. You’ll be given tips and tricks to facilitate group discussions by listening and observing a group of people who barely know each, and can still respect each other’s opinions, thoughts, and beliefs.

Mon, 30 May 2022 - 56 - E43 - Ruthless Compassion as a Kindness Leader featuring Dr. Marcia Sirota
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.
There are many leadership principles for emerging leaders to choose from as they embark on their leadership journey. And while each of the principles has their own unique take on how to lead, there are many overlays. Such as: Be honest, be fair, be transparent, be kind.
Emerging leaders often feel overwhelmed in their new role, trying to balance the team goals, their own personal goals, the team dynamic, etc. In the midst of this balancing act, there is often team conflict, and most often, the emerging leader will be overly kind, trying to ‘kill’ the conflict with kindness.
The thing is, this tactic rarely works, and so, in this episode, you’ll hear from Dr. Marcia Sirota, a board-certified psychiatrist, author and professional speaker who will talk about Ruthless Compassion as a Kindness Leader. We’ll hear how emerging leaders can create a space where compassion and kindness are principal team attributes of cohesive and effective team.Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front is humbled to have been listed in the Top 20 for Best Canadian Leadership-themed podcasts in 2021.

Mon, 23 May 2022 - 55 - E42 - Reach Your Peak Performance featuring Dr. Ruth Gotian
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
Most leaders are, by their very nature, high achievers. And this is because leaders, especially new and emerging leaders, have a tendency to see a problem or challenge and want to attack it with the ferocity of a lion hunting in the wild.
The advantage of this intense drive is that these leaders are extremely motivated, possess a high level of perseverance, have a strong personal and professional foundation, and are constantly learning from their experiences. And it’s the highest of achievers, with years of experience, that can effectively balance performing all of these traits at the same time.
The question then becomes, “How can emerging leaders learn to simultaneously harness and use these traits?”
Well, I have good news for you, in this episode, you’ll hear from Dr. Ruth Gotian, author of “The Success Factor: Developing the Mindset and Skillset for Peak Business Performance.” Dr. Gotian will offer insight and perspective from high achievers such as astronauts, Olympic champions, and Nobel Laureates, using their experiences to help emerging leaders operate at their peak performance level.

Mon, 16 May 2022 - 54 - Bonus Episode: Leading During a Crisis featuring Mary Martz, Chad Martz, and Annalise Schamuhn
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.
War is stupid.
And while we all know that wars have far-reaching physical, emotional, and mental effects, it’s only until you have lived, worked, loved, fought in a war zone, can you really understand how extensive the effects of the campaign will have on yourself and everyone in the war zone.
The thing is, even without these types of experiences, leaders can, and SHOULD, be prepared to lead from the literal and figurative front lines. But how DO we do this? How CAN we lead if we don’t have the experiences?
And so, in this episode, we’ll answer these questions and more. We’ll do this by hearing from Mary Martz, a Hungry for Life International Program Manager – Ukraine region, Chad Martz, the Director of Operations at Hungry For Life International, and Annalise Schamuhn, a long-time volunteer with HFL. This trio will talk about their experiences before and during their time as they are embedded in the Ukraine war, bringing food, water, supplies, and hope, to those who are caught in the cross-fire.

Thu, 21 Apr 2022 - 53 - E41 - Authentic Leadership featuring Linda Basso
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.
Every leader has their own vision of what the perfect leader looks like, what they sound like, how they act under pressure, or how they interact with other leaders. We create these impressions of the ‘perfect’ leader because this is the type of leader we want to be.
The challenge comes when we take on the mantle of leadership and we begin to try and act like the leader we want to be seen as.
Here’s the thing, we can only be our authentic selves if we knowhow to be authentic, putting down our armour and letting our team members see the real us. This is true leadership. And so, in this episode, you’ll hear from Linda Basso, a business and marketing coach, who will talk about what it means to ‘be yourself’ and how to be authentic. Once we can self-accept who we are and how we lead, our teams will see and feel our authenticity, creating an even stronger bond among all of the team members.

Mon, 11 Apr 2022 - 49 - Bonus Episode: The Ukraine War – How You Can Help RIGHT NOW featuring Annalise Schamuhn and Chad Martz
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
Leaders talk about wanting to make real change, to help others, their organizations, or both. And this is good thing because leaders, followers, everyone in between, can and SHOULD try to make an impact, to make ourselves and those around us feel safer and happier.
The thing is, quite often, emerging leaders feel that they can’t make these changes early in their leadership journeys.Well, there’s no way to sugar coat it, they’re wrong. We can make impactful changes right away.
And so, in this episode, you’ll hear from Chad Martz, the Director of Operations at Hungry For Life International and Annalise Schamuhn, a long time Hungry For Life International volunteer, who are both embedded in the Ukraine right now, doing their part to help those in need.
You’ll hear the ways that Hungry For Life International provides care and support, why they do this, and how we can help too. Most importantly, you’ll see, in real time, how emerging leaders can make a lifelong, lasting impact, right now.Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front is humbled to have been listed in the Top 20 for Best Canadian Leadership-themed podcasts in 2021.

Sat, 02 Apr 2022 - 48 - E39 - The Power of Guilt
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
Guilt is a powerful emotion, one that sits inside us, stirring up emotions and feelings, often creating tense personal and professional situations for ourselves and our team members.
If guilt has such a strong grip on how we act, the questions then become, how can we recognize guilt? How do we live into our guilt, not allowing it to take over our lives? How can emerging leaders help their team members when they are feeling guilty?
Fear not!
In this episode, you’ll hear from a group of professionals from diverse and extensive backgrounds. You’ll hear from guests who gave it all up to follow their passions, the guilt about following their dreams, overtaking them. You’ll hear from life and leadership coaches, and how they manage the guilt of being parents while also being professionals in their fields. You’ll hear about how guilt can force us to work harder, work faster, work meaner, all to cover our own self-loathing at ourselves and our guilt. And it’s their stories, their admissions of guilt and how they navigated through these feelings, coming out the other side, that will help emerging leaders see, understand, and work within their guilt.

Mon, 28 Mar 2022 - 47 - E38 - Big Leadership Starts with Baby Steps featuring Mathew Georghiou
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
Leaders tend to want to make big splashes in the change pond very early in their leadership journey. And this makes sense, we are finally in a position to ‘right the wrongs’, and take care of our people, and be the voice we feel the company needs to go to the next level.
The challenge with being a new leader and having all of this energy is that the practical leadership experience to know when and how to make these splashes can only be achieved with time and practice. And most often, businesses don’t, or can’t, wait for leaders to gain this invaluable experience.
This is where Mathew Georghiou, Founder and CEO of MediaSpark comes in. Mathew and his team have taken our love of games and blended it with experiential leadership lessons, and these games gives new leaders and entrepreneurs the experience in a safe environment where we don’t have to worry about causing real-world damage to our team or business.

Mon, 14 Mar 2022 - 45 - E36 - Emerging Leaders and Changing the System featuring Haley Grayless
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
Have you ever been at work and thought, “I can do that better”, or looked around and thought, “Things need to change here”, but felt overwhelmed or powerless to effect these changes?
Here’s the thing, you’re a leader now. You have a voice at the table now, all those times that you complained about the company, the culture, the boss, all of it. Now, you have a chance to start making those changes. They’ll very likely be incremental changes, but any forward change is a start to systemic and institutional change.
And so, in this episode, we’ll discuss these feelings and thoughts, and then go one step further by providing some advice and insight into ways that you might be able to make these changes, and we’ll do this by speaking with Haley Grayless, MSOD, founder and CEO of Vaxa Collective, where we’ll hear her story of how she helps change toxic cultures by revolutionizing leadership and management in the workplace.Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front is humbled to have been listed in the Top 20 for Best Canadian Leadership-themed podcasts in 2021.

I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
People are challenging. There’s no other way to say it. Every person is unique, every situation is unique. People have their ups and downs, their bad days, their good days, their blah days, and they have their regular average days, and while all these days are irregular in nature, the one constant for leaders is to know how to recognize which of these challenges your people are having, and how to be an effective leader for them, the company, and yourself.
In this episode, I’ve assembled a group of diverse leaders from the Leadership Executive Coaching, HR, and IT industries to help define what makes a challenging direct report. We’ll also explore how emerging leaders can recognize when their people are experiencing challenges, and we’ll provide some advice and practical toolsto help emerging leaders help their direct reports as they all navigate their challenges from the trenches.Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front is humbled to have been listed in the Top 20 for Best Canadian Leadership-themed podcasts in 2021.

Words have power. And the words you use WILL have consequences. I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
We hear a lot about the need to take time for ourselves, to be mindful of our own burnout, but this is much easier to say than to put into practice. The irony is that leaders, especially emerging leaders, tend to be very good at seeing the signs of burnout on their team members, but are terrible at seeing it in themselves.
The reality is that in the moment, it’s hard to effectively look at ourselvesand see when the stress of life, work, etc., has begun to take its toll on us.
And so, in this episode, you’ll hear from Catherine Moore, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, podcaster, and public speaker, who will use her research to help us define burnout. Catherine will also identify the physical and emotional cues that emerging leaders can reference for themselves and their team members. Catherine will also provide some advice and inspiration for leaders to help themselves and their teams.

I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
Famed American labour leader and civil rights activist, Dolores Huerta once said, “When you have a conflict, that means that there are truths that have to be addressed on each side of the conflict. And when you have a conflict, then it’s an educational process to try to resolve the conflict. And to resolve that, you have to get people on both sides of the conflict involved so that they can dialogue.”And so, in this episode, I’ll be offering insight and advice, along with quotes from workplace conflict experts in order to highlight methods to help emerging leaders deal with team conflict.

I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
When you think of quiet team members, what are your first thoughts about them as leaders? The odds are that the first words are not strength, powerful, or any of the words we often associate with the larger-than-life leaders that most often appear in the headlines.
Also, what if I told you that unconscious biases about introverted leaders, either as an introvert or extrovert, have impacted your professional life? It has, I guarantee it.
I have good news, in this episode, I’ll be talking to Megumi Miki, a leadership consultant, world-renowned speaker, and author of Quietly Powerful, the Australian Career Book and Leadership Book for 2020, who will help us see the raw potential of the emerging leaders who choose to quietly lead from the trenches.

Mon, 31 Jan 2022 - 38 - E30 - Mentorship & You featuring Craig Anderson
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
Mentorship is a funny thing, not make us laugh funny, but funny in that it’s very hard to find any business or any leader who would say that mentorship wasn’t absolutely invaluable to the health and success of people and business. The irony is that most people would also agree that mentorship programs are usually terrible in actually mentoring people. In this episode, we’ll talk with Craig Anderson, a leadership coach who has mentored and been a mentor during his corporate and coaching careers. Craig and I will discuss the value of mentoring emerging leaders as well as the types of things that emerging leaders should look for in their mentor. Lastly, we’ll talk about how emerging leaders can be effective mentors for their direct reports.

I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
Leading is hard.
Sure, there are some moments where being the leader is lots of fun, you know what I’m talking about, those moments where we are filled with pride at seeing a job well done, or when we’ve mentored or coached a team member and we see them succeed. But just as often, leaders are faced withdifficult situations that make being an emerging leader a challenging spot to be in. If only there was a podcast dedicated to helping emerging leaders......Anyhoo, in this episode, we’re going to discuss one of the most common challenges that emerging leaders face, and that’s having the hard conversation.
To do this, we’ll hear from ToriAnn Perkey and Laura Couvillon, who are fellow podcast hosts, and the founders of IntegrateUp an online recruiting business. Laura and ToriAnn will offer their insights and experiences on how to approach those hard talks. But wait!!!! I’m also bringing back a fan favourite, Brandon Maloney, the founder of Sketchs Ink, and he will join the group as a co-host, who will also offer his views on hard conversationsthat he’s experienced as an entrepreneur.

I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
Psychological Safety.
When you read these words, what did you begin thinking about?
Was it about leaders creating safe spaces for themselves and their teams? Or perhaps it about finding a physical safe area where everyone can feel comfortable and free to express themselves. No matter how you perceive the concept of psychological safety, the main thing is to consider what you and your team ‘sees’.
And so, in this episode, you’ll hear from Laura Jansen, an educational consultant, who will delve into what psychological safety is and why it’s important for emerging leaders to understand and implement this concept. Laura will also provide some real-world practical tips that emerging leaders can put into their leadership toolbox to ensure they are providing their team with all of the tools they need to succeed.

Mon, 10 Jan 2022 - 35 - E27 - Emerging Leaders & Workplace Culture, an 80s Pop-Culture Phenomenon featuring Chris Clews
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
We hear a lot about how important it is for leaders to understand workplace culture so that leaders can better understand how to connect to their teams.Emerging leaders find themselves in the position of having to enact the company directives with the team they are in. The challenge for the emerging leader is to find ways to effectively and efficiently guide their team.
In this episode, I’ll be speaking with Chris Clews, a speaker, author, and 80s pop-culture guru, and he’ll use his deep knowledge of the 80s to help emerging leaders understand today’s workplace culture and the importance of recognizing peoples’ greatness.... and then let them know.

Mon, 03 Jan 2022 - 34 - E26 - Diversity in Leadership featuring the All Around Consulting Team
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
Diversity in leadership is one of those topics where people tend to groan when it comes up. And the reasons for this are as diverse as many the reasons why diversity is so important for leaders. But there’s one significant, irrefutable fact that no one can deny.
Diverse groups make teams stronger. The challenge for emerging leaders is to know how to create a diverse team, and then lead that diverse group of professionals, all of whom have varying personal and professional priorities, towards the common work-related goal.
In this episode, we’ll hear from the team at All Around Consulting, a Canadian consulting company based out of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Why the All-Around Consulting team, you ask? That’s a great question! And the answer is because they have created a diverse team of leaders with varying professional and personal backgrounds, and they thrive at working as a team, using their diversity as their strength to guide and mentor companies.
And so, we’ll talk about what it means to be a diverse leader, how to be a leader who genuinely embodies diversity in their leadership ethos, and finally, we’ll offer some tips to help create your diverse team.

Mon, 27 Dec 2021 - 33 - E25 - Crafting Your Personal Leadership Practice featuring Jason “The Donk” Donkersgoed
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
Leadership is a never-ending journey of vulnerable self-discovery, one where we are constantly learning about ourselves, refining how we attack a challenge, remaining curious about our environments, learning to see beyond what we can see, all during our quest for personal mastery.
In this episode, we’ll discuss how to create YOUR leadership practice (we actually changed the name of the episode from leadership brand midway through the recording session). And we’ll do this with a Fan Favourite, Jason “The Donk” Donkersgoed!! If the name sounds familiar to you, well, it’s likely because you listened to S01E06 where Jason and I talked about creative tension and repeatable language.
We’ll talk about being genuinely curious, how to be effectively and efficiently reflective, and we’ll round out the episode with some inspiration for emerging leaders as they are leading in the trenches.

I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
It’s likely that at some point in everyone’s professional or personal life, they haven’t been taken seriouslywith the after-effects of these moments having a lasting impression on us.From the lens of emerging leaders, these impressions often have a direct correlation to how we lead from the trenches.
In this episode, we’ll explore some of the reasons why people, specifically emerging leaders, tend to not be taken seriously, we will offer some tips to calm the self-doubt inside ourselves, and finally, we will reach into our leadership tool boxes and hand out some practical tools to enable each other to ensure everyone is heard as much as they want to be.To accomplish this, I’ve assembled a group of professionals who will share their stories of not being taken seriously, and how they ensures their voices were heard. I’d like to welcome talking to Jillian Webber, a U.S. Army Veteran, public speaker, and Health and Life Coach, and Brienne Hennessy, a Vocal Empowerment Coach, Corporate Trainer, and published author.

Mon, 13 Dec 2021 - 31 - E23 - Survivorship Bias (It’s not what you think) and Making Fully Informed Decisions featuring Simon Kardynal
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.

Mon, 06 Dec 2021 - 30 - E22 - Exploring Burn-Out and Boundaries featuring Christin Sambor
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.
Burnout is a real thing. The trick with burnout is that most often we don’t, or can’t, see when we are on that edge, teetering on the cliff of exhaustion.
And the western world philosophy and definition of a work ethic doesn’t help either because the philosophy demands real-world results, make more money, grow the company, get promoted, whatever, and inevitably we get caught up in this whirlwind, and like all storms, eventually the winds will stop and we will fall down, often hard.
And so, in this episode, you’ll hear from Christin Sambor, a burnout and boundaries coach, who will help us understand burnout, its signs and dangers, and how to create realistic boundaries for emerging leaders to manage the stresses of our personal and professional lives while we lead from the trenches.
