We're all investors in the share market, either directly or through our superannuation. We're handing over management of our assets to financial advisors and fund managers. The best will look after our interests and make us wealthier. But how can we know for sure? Where do you go if you're completely new but want to start learning about investing in the markets yourself. The jargon is dense and it can feel like we're being kept deliberately in the dark. In Shares for Beginners, you'll hear from people in the finance industry and together we'll explain key concepts of investing in the ASX, the NASDAQ, S&P500, FTSE and Dow. More importantly, they have insights that allow us to look under the hood of the stock market, explaining how it works and what to look out for. We have to be smart. We have to be diversified and we have to have good risk management strategies if we want to invest for the long term.

How is your superannuation linked to the Australian & US stock markets? It's crucial to understand the fundamentals of stocks and shares, and recommend reading "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham.
I explore the basics - what a share is and how to buy one, and delve into the world of value investing, exploring strategies to identify undervalued stocks. I cover key terms like ASX (Australian Securities Exchange), CBOE (Chicago Board Options Exchange), ASX200 (Australian Securities Exchange 200 Index), ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds), LICs (Listed Investment Companies), Managed Funds, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), as well as the difference between passive and active investing.
There are many traps for beginner investors and it's good to be aware of the role and risks of options, warrants, CFDs (Contracts for Difference), day trading, bonds, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, and the difference between fundamental and technical analysis.
Tracking your investments is essential, and it's important to know about watchlists, understand dividends and dividend reinvestment plans (DRPs), while exploring robo-investing, fixed income, index funds, and micro-investing.
I cover topics like trading and buying shares, making money from shares, and understanding the Australian stock exchange. What is the role of stockbrokers and online brokers and how to buy and sell shares.
I've interviewed industry experts and collaborated with Superhero, Stockspot, Caleb Silver Investopedia, Spencer Jakab from The Wall Street Journal, Pearler, Sharesight, Magellan, Saxo, Morningstar, QAV, Equity Mates, Owen Rask, Strawman, Motley Fool, Stockopedia, Betashares, Vanguard, Van Eck, Roger Montgomery, Tony Kynaston, Gemma Dale, Betsy Westcott, Molly Benjamin, Liz Tian, Andrew Baxter, Simon Ree, Wisr, Ladies Finance Club, Strong Money Australia, Captain Fi, Fred Schebesta, Kylie Purcell, Australian Shareholders' Association, Jessica Amir, Jordan Eliseo, Shani Jayamanne, Vic Jokovic, Scott Phillips, Mark Monfort, Andrew Page, and Claude Walker.

In a world of fluctuating markets and economic volatility, one asset has stood the test of time as a beacon of stability: gold. In the latest episode of our podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with Jordan Eliseo, the general manager of ABC Bullion Australia, who brought over 25 years of experience in financial markets to our discussion on the enduring value of gold. Jordan provided a wealth of knowledge about gold's role as a hedge against inflation and its unique position within a diversified investment portfolio. Despite the absence of income in the form of dividends, gold's solid capital growth, liquidity, and capacity to protect wealth during market downturns makes it an attractive asset for investors.

Fri, 12 Jan 2024 - 16min - 284 - Michael Kemp - The Ulysses Contract | Holiday Repeat
G’day, I hope you’re enjoying your summer break. The next couple of weeks will be repeats while I recharge for the investing year in 2024. I hope 2024 shines brightly on your portfolio.
What does an epic poem written around 700BC tell us about investing? How are investors tempted to steer their money onto the rocks of investing underperformance? My guest is Michael Kemp, author of The Ulysses Contract.
There's plenty of great lessons in this interview & much more in the book. There's a lot to avoid but as Michael says:
"I don't believe you need to become a champion to become a really good investor. Market returns are fantastic returns as long as you achieve them. Don't try and shoot for the stars cuz you're probably full flat on your face. But if you accept that you're gonna be delivered market returns and you are patient, then market returns can be spectacular returns given the power of compounding."

Tue, 09 Jan 2024 - 39min - 283 - Weekend Watchlist - The Stockopedia NAPS portfolio
Happy New Year! Welcome to the first Weekend Watchlist of 2024. At the beginning of each year Stockopedia publishes their No-Admin Portfolio System (NAPS) portfolio. Chris Batchelor and I discuss construction of this model, how it performed last year, and a couple of the stocks that have been included - Kina Securities (ASX:KSL) and Ricegrowers (ASX:SGLLV).
"To ensure a well diversified portfolio we select two stocks from each of the broad economic sectors as identified by Stockopedia. We select the two highest StockRank™ from each sector and add it to the portfolio. That’s it!
However in order to ensure that our Australasian NAPS portfolio’s diversification reflects that of the Australasian market, we have included a separate sector, Real Estate in acknowledgement of its size and contribution.
Further, given their smaller size we have only selected one stock from each of the Telecoms and Utilities sectors. In total the portfolio has 20 stocks spread across a diverse range of economic sectors and all with high ranking StockRank™ (QVM) scores.
Please don’t view the NAPS portfolio as a tip sheet. It is constructed using a simple rules-based approach with only minimal discretion. It is purely for the purposes of education only and does not reflect an actual portfolio."

I'm excited to share this podcast episode with Vince Scully from Life Sherpa as we delve into the recipe for creating a sustainable ETF portfolio. It's not all about finding the highest return. We talk about the average punter's view of risk in the stock market. Risk isn't just about the chance of a company going bankrupt and losing all your hard-earned dollars. Tue, 19 Sep 2023 - 40min - 257 - Vince Scully - Life Sherpa | Is financial advice investment advice?
In this episode I'm joined by Vince Scully as we delved into the world of financial advice. When should you start to seeking it, how much it should cost and a crucial discussion about the difference between "financial advice" and "investment advice". These two are often conflated but they serve different purposes. We spoke about the value of advice and how it helps to achieve financial independence and your life goals. But we did have a couple of questions about the costs touted by Money Smart at this link: Financial advice costs - Moneysmart.gov.au. We also dealt with a couple of comments from listener Ravi about his friend with a dodgy advisor and whether the ASX 200 is actually the best performing index in the world!

Wed, 13 Sep 2023 - 48min - 256 - Chris Batchelor - Stockopedia | Free Cash Flow Don't Lie
I think we can become easily confused by the jargon, metrics and ratios that analysts use to value companies. That's why I like to break them down one by one. I'm joined in this episode by Chris Batchelor from Stockopedia to discuss Free Cash Flow - what does it mean and why is it important?
Free cash flow is the amount of money that a business generates after paying for its operating expenses and investing in its growth. It is the cash that is left over for the owners or shareholders of the business to use as they wish. They can use it to pay off debt, save for future projects, or distribute as dividends.

Wed, 06 Sep 2023 - 32min - 255 - Mark Tobin - Coffee Microcaps | Small but Worthy Stocks
The best part of Mark Tobin's job is finding innovative and disruptive companies that you don't hear about every day. Mark has been passionate about finding "undiscovered" microcap stocks ever since he began his career as an equity analyst in Sydney. Ever since that first exposure to microcap stocks, Mark has been hooked on uncovering these hidden gems and following their story and evolution.
We talked about Luke Winchester from Merewether Capital, and three microcaps that appeared at the last Coffee Microcaps conference in April. Water filtration with De.mem (ASX:DEM), helping to reduce the risk of travellers' diarrhea with Immuron (ASX:IMC), and timber and building materials supplier Big River Industries (ASX:BRI) which is nearly 100 years old.

Tue, 29 Aug 2023 - 34min - 254 - James Hill - MCF Energy | Europe's Quest for Energy Independence
What is the energy sector? How have tensions with Russia impacted global energy markets, and how can Europe's energy security be strengthened amidst conflict, uncertainty and the renewable energy revolution. My guest in this episode is James Hill, CEO of MCF Energy. With over four decades of experience in the industry, James Hill provides valuable insights into the current state of the sector and the transition toward renewable resources.
While the world is moving towards renewable energy, James Hill highlights that the transition will take time. The existing infrastructure and industrial base heavily rely on oil and gas, making their continued usage necessary for the foreseeable future.

Fri, 18 Aug 2023 - 9min - 252 - Ian Irvine - LICAT | Tortured Investment Analogies
Let me apologise upfront for all the banging you can hear during the episode. My neighbour was having a new roof fitted during the recording. Simplifying the complex world of investment with Ian Irvine from the Listed Investment Companies and Trusts Association (LICAT). We attempt to use similes, comparisons and analogies to explain the nitty-gritty of investing. For example, imagine the ASX200 as a Lego castle. The bigger company, the more blocks they contribute to the index. Inflows and outflows can drastically alter the size of an ETF like a balloon expanding and contracting. LICs are more like a Lego castle with a fixed number of blocks.

However, the practical tips she describes are still relevant and worth thinking about.
We talk about technical analysis and how to start spotting trends, using moving averages, and understanding RSI and MACD indicators, the process of finding companies about to be added or removed from major indices, such as the ASX 200 or the S&P 500, and researching companies that may benefit from changes in government policies

Fri, 16 Jun 2023 - 14min - 237 - Claude Walker - A Rich Life | The Rule of 40
We all know and love the high-growth companies that have (hopefully) helped to contribute to our market returns, but how can you run the tape measure over them? What kind of numbers can help you to value companies that are growing fast but are not yet maximizing profit margins? According to Claude Walker, the magic number is 40.
Claude Walker is the founder of A Rich Life where he writes the Ethical Equities column. He loves his ASX tech stocks and investing in smaller unloved and ignored microcaps where the market is much less efficient.
In this episode we chatted about The Rule of 40. He was inspired by the announcement from new CEO of Xero (ASX:XRO) Sukhinder Singh Cassidy. She has struck a completely different tone than the old CEO. She says that the company will now be “more balanced and look to Rule of 40 as a useful performance evaluation measure in managing the balance of growth and profitability.”

Tue, 30 May 2023 - 30min - 232 - QUICK TIP - Ways to invest and things to avoid | From my first ever episode
The first episode of this podcast was released in February 2019, and my first guest was a financial advisor named Rob Gilmour. I couldn’t have asked for a finer first guest. He’s highly experienced in advice as well as having a background in markets in Australia and London. This Quick tip is taken from that first episode and it kind of shows where my head was at the time. I was still thinking of the share market as a place to get rich quick and hadn’t learnt about the long-term compounding nature of the game. It’s my main goal with the podcast, to make sure that listeners don’t make the same stupid mistakes that I made. Here’s a little segment about ways that you can invest and the ones to be very, very careful of.

Fri, 26 May 2023 - 11min - 231 - Elio D'Amato - Stockopedia | Am I ready to invest?
Broadcasting live from his humble garage next to his trusty Toyota Corolla (and a clothes rack), Elio D'Amato from Stockopedia joined me to discuss share investing and the factors that identify quality companies. It's always great to catch up with Elio. His bluff good humour combined with his decades of experience always make for a great chat about companies and markets. We addressed the concerns of people approaching investment markets for the first time: Is now a good time to be in the market? Elio believes that it's not about timing, it's about the readiness of the investor. Just like merging into traffic, it's not about waiting for the ideal conditions, but rather assessing your own preparedness to navigate the market's ups and downs.

Wed, 24 May 2023 - 41min - 230 - QUICK TIP - Analysts gazing longingly into the future. Sometimes it's right to be wrong.
I was interviewing Andrew Page of Strawman on the 24th April this year. It was on the day that Bluescope Steel announced a significant earnings upgrade. I used this opportunity to find out Andrew’s thoughts on what it meant, why he doesn’t invest in companies that are exposed to commodities, and more importantly, the immediate affect on the share price.

Thu, 18 May 2023 - 51min - 228 - QUICK TIP Mathew Hodge - Morningstar | Where YouTube and Podcasts Meet the ASX
What are the common ratios you should learn before building a portfolio? I know I go on about metrics and rations, but they’re important to understand. It’s what expert investors use to run the tape measure over companies. Mathew Hodge is a director of equity research for Morningstar Australasia. In this Quick Tip he talks about return on invested capital. He explains how this ratio can show how much return a company generates for every dollar of capital invested. Measuring return on invested capital eliminates the bias of return on equity, which can be distorted by financial leverage or the amount that the company has borrowed.
Above all, Mathew says to invest in yourself, expand your circles of competence, and keep upgrading your mental software.

Fri, 12 May 2023 - 10min - 227 - Gary Brode - Deep Knowledge Investing | SVB Overdrawn and underfunded
Silicon Valley Bankcorp failed spectacularly in March 2023. The bank, the regulators and the media formed a circle of finger-pointing and blame. Understanding duration risk is a fundamental concept in finance, and the bank should have been aware of the problem. The Federal Reserve warned Silicon Valley Bankcorp last year, expressing their concern. Warnings ignored, the results catastrophic.

Fri, 05 May 2023 - 9min - 225 - Andrew Page - Strawman | Question Everything
Have you ever found yourself nodding along to someone's explanation of an investing concept or number, only to realize that you have no idea what they were talking about? It's eye-glazingly common in finance, where jargon and buzzwords are thrown around with abandon. Especially by men in fancy suits. I'm joined in this episode by Andrew Page from the Strawman Investing Blog We're taking a closer look at 2 financial metrices - the price-earnings ratio (PE) and return on equity (ROE). Don't worry of these metrics are not clear when you're first starting out as an investor. It's more important that you are aware of the pitfalls and to need to keep asking questions.

Wed, 26 Apr 2023 - 30min - 222 - Michael Kemp - The Ulysses Contract | Avoiding the rocks of investing under-performance
"Don't be discouraged by all the negative arguments I'm putting forth. I don't believe you need to become a champion to become a really good investor. Market returns are fantastic returns as long as you achieve them. Don't try and shoot for the stars cuz you're probably full flat on your face. But if you accept that you're gonna be delivered market returns and you are patient, then market returns can be spectacular returns given the power of compounding."

Wed, 05 Apr 2023 - 39min - 218 - Tim Ellis - Dad Investor | Building the craft of investing
Some people leave notes for their kids on the fridge. Others start a blog. Tim Ellis is my guest in this episode. He is the author of the Dad Investor Blog. He wanted to leave little notes for his kids in the future – how to set a budget, save money, spend money, buy a property, save for a baby and more. The goal was to make it clear and concise on what he'd learnt about the most important aspects of personal finance and investing.
He also talked about his favourite ETF. The best ETF in Australia is the only one I own – Dad Investor
