'Winging It' Welcome to another episode of The Long Live Rock 'N' Roll Podcast - where we dive deep into the world of music and dissect iconic albums that have left an indelible mark on the industry. In this episode, we're turning our attention to one of the most celebrated albums of the 1970s: 'Band on the Run' by Wings. Having lost some of his musical credibility for his work post-Beatles amongst critics, Paul McCartney travelled to Nigeria, 2 band members down, to record an album that would restore any faith that fans and critics had (foolishly!) lost in him and his songwriting abilities! 'Band On The Run' is full of intricate songwriting, lush production and catchy melodies that have become staple McCartney songs - making it one of Paul's most respected and renowned works. From the infectious title track to the soulful "Let Me Roll It" and the anthemic "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five," we'll explore the album's diverse mix of rock, pop, and experimental sounds as well as the concept-style lyrics exploring themes of escape, liberation and resilience! So join us as we celebrate the work of McCartney and explore why this album remains a cornerstone of Paul's post-Beatles career and a beloved masterpiece in the annals of rock music history. Mon, 12 Feb 2024 - 74 - 63. Must The Show Go On?
Are Holograms and Avatars the future of live music? Last year, KISS announced that they would "live on eternally" through their brand new avatars who would take over the roles of KISS from their human counterparts and opened up a world of touring and viewing options for them. ABBA successfully executed the Voyage tour - using 160 cameras to capture facial expressions and body movements to simulate a real show. Meanwhile Dio, Tupac and Zappa's deaths did not stop them from touring- as their holograms were tested with real live bands backing them to, again, try to simulate a real show. In this episode, we debate and discuss in great depth the pros and cons of all of the experiments listed above, try to ascertain whether or not this tarnishes or furthers a legacy and ask ourselves: Would we go to a virtual gig? Tastefully and seamlessly combining Rock, Blues, Soul and Boogie, ZZ Top carried the torch for the traditional Blues/Soul efforts, but fused it with the 70s Hard Rock of the time, whilst also paving the way for many future Rock bands to adopt this multi-genre approach. 'Rock's Run Riot' Following Rick Allen's loss of his left arm after a car accident, Def Leppard's follow up to their momentous 'Pyromania' was a long process. Beginning in 1984 and ending in 1987, 'Hysteria' took 3 years and several producers to complete! The band set out to make a Rock version of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' - hoping every song could be a hit single. This goal came to fruition when Leppard released SEVEN of the twelve tracks from the album over an 18 month period and, subsequently, sold over 20,000,000 copies - 12,000,000 of which coming from the USA. Episode 59: Understanding Eddie Van Halen - Interview with Steven Rosen In the newest episode we have the absolute pleasure of chatting with and interviewing Steven Rosen - a renowned rock journalist who has finally released his long-awaited book about the friendship he shared with the late great guitar player Edward Van Halen. Steve has previously authored seven other books including biographies on Jeff Beck, Free/Bad Company, Black Sabbath and Randy Rhoads, and writes about what it was like being friends with one of the most iconic guitar players in the world - with whom he shared many hours at his Hollywood home, his 5150 studio, on aeroplanes, in cars - and even jamming on several occasions with Van Halen! Steve was authorised to write Edward's biography back in 1985 but due to several delays by Eddie, followed by his illness and then a disagreement with Rosen, the book never came to light. In order to tell the story accurately, Steven pored over hours of interviews and peered deep inside distant memories to create a book unlike any other out there. Laz & Felipe are delighted to have Steven on the show and to talk about all things Eddie Van Halen! 'Tonechaser – Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen' by Steve Rosen is out now and available for purchase here: TONECHASER BOOK [https://www.tonechaserbook.com/] (tonechaserbook.com)- a must have for any Van Halen, Guitar or Rock fan this Christmas!

Episode 42: 'Reggatta De Blanc' - The Police (1979) 'White Reggae' With their intense touring schedule fine tuning their cohesiveness and tightness, The Police presented us with a sharper, more polished album that would be a defining moment in their career and in the development of New Wave and Rock in the UK. Copeland's percussive anti-backbeat grooves, Summer's atmospheric & layered guitar tones and Sting's Caribbean-inspired vocals & intricate bass lines, the trio created and executed a wonderful Rock/Reggae/Post-Punk hybrid record that has long stood the test of time and made The Police the band we know today. Mon, 27 Mar 2023 - 52 - 41. 'The Joshua Tree' - U2 (1987)
Episode 41: 'The Joshua Tree' - U2 (1987) 'U-Two Americas' Fresh from multiple tours in support of 'The Unforgettable Fire', U2 wanted to continue their trajectory and momentum of their ambient, atmospheric music, but with a harder hitting end product - 'The Joshua Tree' certainly hit that mark becoming the fastest selling album in British history and selling over 25 million copies. Having immersed themselves in American culture and history during a tour, the working title of 'Two Americas' would be the thematic base for this album. Musically, they sought to combine their Irish heritage with their new found love for the American Blues and Country - and, lyrically, adding in their distaste for its politics, this album transformed U2 from music stars to global superstars. Bono's passionate vocals combined with The Edge's minimalistic guitar parts resonated with audiences around the world and presented us with an easy to listen to album filled with passion, fire, suffering, soul and love. Episode 40: 'Breakfast In America' - Supertramp (1979) 'Songs Of Vision' In 1979, Supertramp departed from their staple Progressive sound in favour of a more accessible sounding, Pop-ier album. 'Breakfast In America' was their most commercially successful album - selling over 19 million copies worldwide. It brought to them new listeners from the radio, yet also indulged their already committed fanbase - with a beautiful blend of Pop, Prog and Rock, 'Breakfast In America' was a landmark release for the group. Episode 39: 'Selling England By The Pound' by Genesis (1973) 'I Know What I Like (In My Prog)' Concerned with the rise of Americanism in 70s Britain, Genesis would take a line from the Labour party's manifesto and explore some serious folk and cultural elements in their fifth studio album. 1973's 'Selling England By The Pound' was a very serious contender, musically, in the Prog/Hard Rock categories, but also continued the whimsical theatrics and drama from several of their previous instalments - combining both elements to create one of Genesis' most revered and successful Prog albums. Episode 38: 'Between The Buttons' - The Rolling Stones (1967) 'Cool, Calm, Connection' Following the success of their first few albums, The Rolling Stones changed things up with their 5th (UK) installment in 1967. 'Between The Buttons' went under the radar due to its departure from their blues-based Rock to something more Psychedelic, but presented listeners with, perhaps, the Stones' most mature work. Choosing to write a 'sound experience' rather than a collection of singles, Brian Jones put down the guitar to pursue a variety of other instruments and some well orchestrated classical instrumentation was introduced to their music. Episode 34 - 'Rumours' - Fleetwood Mac (1977) 'Gold Dust Album' In the midst of affairs, divorces and heavy drug use, Fleetwood Mac headed into the studio in mid 1976 to record their eleventh studio album. 4 out of 5 members were in the middle of breakups (with each other!) and the band were in turmoil - often not being able to be in the same room as one another. Yet what came out of those sessions would be crucial to the progression of Pop music as we know it. With stunning production, a variety of popular styles dabbled with and emotional/heartfelt lyrics that people could connect to, 'Rumours' would be the seminal Pop album signifying the transition from 70s Rock to 80s Pop. Laz & Felipe take a deep dive into the mental state of the band as well as identifying and discussing the musical and lyrical content that worked so well in creating one of the best selling and most renowned albums of all time. Episode 33 - 'Hunky Dory' by David Bowie (1971) 'Oh, You Pretty Thing' Diving deep into the occult, dealing with his brother's mental health and preparing to become a father for the first time - David Bowie spent early 1971 with these thoughts in his mind whilst writing songs and music for other artists to use. When he realised that this material was too good, he headed to the studio and recorded his signature Art Rock album, 'Hunky Dory'. With the piano arrangements of Rick Wakeman and the orchestration of Mick Ronson combined with Bowie's honest lyrics and expressive voice, 'Hunky Dory' would be one of his most down-to-earth albums. It painted us a picture of his mind at that stage of his life and gave us "an honest account of a man struggling to make sense of his life". - Episode 33 Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4YgCW2fAwcZjhM1nIqb8ID?si=aef9d76066874008 LONG LIVE ROCK 'N' ROLL - Follow the Podcast on Social Media: https://linktr.ee/longlivernrpod - Get in touch and/or leave us a review: longliverocknrollpodcast@gmail.com - Podcast Music by GeriArt, NaturesEye, astrofreq, Twisterium from Pixabay - Podcast Art by Ross Davidson (@ross_feelshame)

Episode 30 - 'Aqualung' by Jethro Tull (1971) 'My God!' In early 1970, Ian Anderson and his wife came upon a homeless man - whom she photographed and whom Ian dubbed 'Aqualung'. The seemingly insignificant event would be like the falling of small stones that start an avalanche - for the interaction would inspire Ian Anderson to question his societal status, his childhood, his religion and, most importantly, his diety. Jethro Tull's fourth studio album, 'Aqualung', came out in early 1971 and was a fantastic deviation from what the world saw as 'Prog Rock' at the time. With a variety of stylistic influences and inspiration - this album combined Classical orchestration and instrumentation, Prog melodies and phrasing, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal riffs and Blues-y structures combined with philosophical, personal lyrics to become one of the most renowned and revered Prog Rock albums of all time. Mon, 26 Sep 2022 - 39 - 28. 'Bo Diddley' - Bo Diddley (1958)
28: 'Bo Diddley' - Bo Diddley (1958) 'Hey, Bo Diddley!' Bo Diddley's 1958 debut album could be said to be the defining transition from American Blues into Traditional Rock 'N' Roll. With a collection of singles from 1955-1958 and some newly written songs, Bo Diddley broke the rules of rhythm, lyrics, instrumentation and, most importantly, styles. 'Bo Diddley' is filled with innovative uses of the guitar, call & response phrases inspired by Gospel and Blues music, single chord vamps in which the instrumentation becomes key - not the chords and, most significantly, the Bo Diddley beat - a significant, distinctive rhythm derived from African dances and Cuban claves. Mon, 12 Sep 2022 - 38 - 27. The Animals
27. The Animals 'Animal Tracks' In the early 60s, a hugely important British band, from Newcastle, would form. The Animals were part of the culturally phenomenal British Invasion of the US. Along with the likes of The Beatles, The Kinks, The Hollies and more, they brought their British Pop over to the States and left their mark. But one aspect of The Animals was very different to their counterparts; their music had strong influences from already popularised American music styles. From Blues to R&B, Rock N Roll to Motown and Gosepl to Doo-Wop - The Animals left their mark on both sides of the pond by incorporating these different genres into one hybrid style and executed their British-American music to perfection. Laz & Felipe take a different approach this episode and go through some of The Animals' greatest hits from the 'The Singles Plus' album and talk about the differing styles, influences, lyrical meanings and genres they hear from song to song! Their eponymous debut album was a fresh take on both of their already successful music, but with new, unique and unexplored musical ventures attempted and achieved. 'Audioslave' was a success - it bred a couple of well received singles and was met with positive critical acclaim. Before the glitz of Glam Rock and the glamour of Hair Metal, came this 4 piece outfit who innovated and pioneered the kind of Rock/Metal music we would so casually associate with the 80s. Having had a huge influence on bands like Whitesnake, Ratt, Guns N Roses, Poison and many others, 'Van Halen' showed the world how to combine heavy music, raw execution and raucous guitar tones with tight harmonies, polished production and sweet melodies to create an album that is critically and historically associated with the inception of Glam Rock and Hair Metal. Mon, 30 May 2022 - 30 - 21. The Band
'The Faithful Servants' In the late 1950s, a backing band emerged that had no limit to its potential. Hired and used by Ronnie Hawkins, Sonny Bill Williamson and Bob Dylan - 1 American & 4 Canadians broke out to form their own act and write their own music. Music that would change the sound of American popular music forever. The Band released their first album in 1968 and their second in 1969, to huge critical acclaim. Those two albums would rubber stamp two moments in modern music that would go on to influence thousands of bands/artists/musicians in America. The birth of Americana and Roots Rock signaled the start of how American writers and composers could twist and mix all of the USA's most popular genres into one streamlined sound. Loved and revered by most, but not known to all, The Band had fans in the form of Eric Clapton; who was desperate to join, George Harrison; who stated how impressed he was by their musicianship and camaraderie and Roger Waters; who described one of their albums as "one of the most influential albums in the history of Rock 'N' Roll". Mon, 04 Apr 2022 - 25 - 17. Cream
17. Cream 'Cream Of The Crop' In 1966, 3 of the UK's most renowned and sought after musicians united and set aside their differences to form the band that would create, pioneer and define the 'Electric Blues Rock' movement in Britain. Having all left other bands and projects to further this endeavour, Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker came together, as Rock's first supergroup, to form Cream! In their short time together, Cream pushed the boundaries of what British Blues was - by pioneering the use of the electric guitar & the status of 'lead guitarist', incorporating elements of Hard Rock, Psychedelia and Jazz into their music and setting the bar so high for other acts heavily influenced by the Blues, but wanting to find their own sound. Laz & Felipe choose their favourite Cream songs, discuss the history and relationship of the band, identify and discuss the similarities and differences between the Cream albums and figure out how and why these three guys did what they had to do to certify themselves and live up to their self appointed reputation as the cream of the crop! Mon, 30 Aug 2021 - 2 - 1. Rock 'N' Roll Is Dead!
Episode 1: Rock 'N' Roll Is Dead! "Rock 'N' Roll is dead!"… is a phrase we hear a lot in the music industry. It's a statement that was first coined in the late 50's when Elvis went to the army, Little Richard retired and Buddy Holly died. It was spoken again by Roger Waters in 1972 whilst Pink Floyd were in the studio recording the very album that would give Rock 'N' Roll a new, albeit different, lease of life. Lenny Kravitz sang it to us in his 1995 hit single and 20 years later Jack Black and Kyle Gass of Tenacious D echoed those sentiments. But is Rock 'N' Roll really dead? Join us for the first episode of the brand new Podcast; 'Long Live Rock 'N' Roll'. In Episode 1, Laz and Felipe introduce themselves while discussing, debating and trying to get to the bottom of the true meaning of what Rock 'N' Roll really is and whether or not it really is dead...
