There are close to half a million school buses across America, doing what school buses do, sitting idle in yards for most of the day. Well, Gagan and the Synop team have spotted an opportunity to make them far more useful by electrifying them and utilising the huge batteries as virtual power plants when they aren’t delivering students to school.
With more than 6000 electric buses already in active service, the tech works and it’s making a big impact. In this podcast Gagan takes Robert through how Synop approach the challenge and deliver optimised charging solutions that are cleaner and greener.

Mon, 29 Apr 2024 - 51min - 316 - Fully Charged meets Just Have a Think | The Fully Charged Podcast
Joining Robert on the podcast this week is Dave Borlace from the Just Have a Think YouTube channel.
Dave was with us recently at our Everything Electric LONDON expo, and we just had to get him back here on the podcast.
Diving straight into how best we can tackle the climate crisis, along with the pros and cons of small nuclear reactors and off-shore and on-shore wind. We also learn what utter nonsense the WLTP range numbers of EVs are! Robert also shares the scary fact that the area of land currently being used for golf courses in the UK, if used for renewables could more than satisfy the whole country’s energy demand, and rightly he asks “Do we want Golf or Energy?!”. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below!
Once these two get started, they really are UNSTOPPABLE! We hope you enjoy this very entertaining and enlightening chat.

Replacing a traditional form of domestic heating like gas or oil and moving to a zero emission solution can be a daunting task. And typically many of us never consider updating a boiler until it breaks, and at that point you just want a quick and easy no fuss solution.
In today’s podcast Imogen speaks with Johan du Plessis, founder and CEO at Tepeo, about the array of options available for those looking to decarbonise their domestic heating systems. With ASHP being one of the options, but one that can take some advance planning, Johan shares more about how Tepeo’s Zero Emission Boiler, or ZEB, could be the ‘like for like’ boiler replacement solution you need when you find yourself having to make that distress purchase.

Wed, 20 Mar 2024 - 48min - 308 - Bill Esterson MP: Labour’s Roadmap to Electrification | The Stop Burning Stuff Podcast
This week Quentin welcomes Labour’s Shadow Minister for Transport, Bill Esterson MP. In this incredibly insightful interview, they discuss the transition to electric vehicles and Labour’s plans on this front.
As an EV driver and politician, Bill recognises the many benefits of embracing electrification for individual convenience, air quality and economic growth. But he also highlights the current challenges to achieving this, much of which he feels stems from the government’s mixed messaging and the rise in misinformation and scepticism from certain media outlets.
Bill also shares an overview of Labour's plans to accelerate the transition, including details of their "5 missions" framework, aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in renewable energy, fostering economic growth, and creating opportunities for people.

This International Women's Day, Quentin engages in a compelling conversation with Lorna McAtear, Head of Fleet at the UK’s National Grid and Joint Chair of the Association of Fleet Professionals.
During their discussions, Lorna shares the benefits and challenges she has experienced in transitioning to an electric fleet, and gives an honest appraisal of how the 21,000 vehicles in National Grid’s fleet have fared in relation to commonly held beliefs about EVs, such as battery efficiency and degradation, tyre wear and fire risk.
Quentin also takes the opportunity to quiz Lorna on the Grid itself; whether it will be able to cope with the growth in demand for EV charging, how it is being future proofed, and what is holding us back from decoupling gas and electricity pricing to reduce electricity costs for consumers.

Description:
In the UK, we need to install 8 million heat pumps over the next decade and will need some 27,000 additional technicians in order to do so to reach net zero. Given the volume of work left to do, we're asking why is it that only 3% of those working in the trades, such as plumbers and electricians, are women? We spoke with Leah Robson from Your Energy Your Way who is ensuring renewable energy training schemes are not only fit for purpose, but infinitely more inclusive. Today her workforce sits at 50:50 men and women and in this podcast we discuss the challenges and opportunities created by striving for equal opportunity and attracting the tremendous volumes of people needed to power the clean energy transition. This week, Quentin Willson continues our fact-sharing mission with special guest Matt Cleevely of Cleevely EVs, one of the country’s most established and experienced EV servicing and repair specialists.
There has been much speculation about EV repairs, particularly when it comes to the battery. Many believe complexity, cost and safety concerns make EV batteries difficult to maintain and fix, but Matt argues that this is not at all the case, sharing many examples from his own busy workshop and national mobile repair business.
Quentin and Matt also explore where the real EV repair challenges lie, and talk about the work Matt is doing to share his business model within the service and repair industry, helping other garages and dealerships become EV-ready.

Mon, 26 Feb 2024 - 46min - 302 - Rt Hon Chris Skidmore OBE - Stop Burning Stuff Podcast
In our very first #StopBurningStuff Friday Takeover podcast, campaign co-founder Quentin Willson is joined by the Rt Hon Chris Skidmore OBE to talk about clean energy, EVs, politics and the future of UK Industry.
Many have hailed Chris Skidmore as a ‘Politician with principles’ following his resignation from UK Government over its decision to grant new oil and gas licences. Since authoring the Government’s independent Net Zero review in 2023, Chris has advocated for the transition to cleaner technologies.
In this episode Chris talks about the need for greater political backing of EVs and clean energy solutions, what is at stake for UK industry and the economy if we don’t embrace these new technologies, and how we can all help influence positive change at a grassroots level.

This week Imogen picks up the podcast duties and speaks with Arvind Sabharwal and Will Tope, Chairman and CEO of LiNa Energy, a UK based battery technology company.
By utilising one of the most abundant elements, sodium, the rediscovery of a previously forgotten battery chemistry and borrowing a few bits of technology garnered from fuel cell development, the team at LiNa have created a new, long duration stationary energy storage solution in the form of sodium solid state lithium free batteries.
This is a fascinating discussion with a company at the cutting edge of a critical technology.

Mon, 29 Jan 2024 - 37min - 297 - With Emma Sutcliffe
If you read the tabloid Press you’d think there were EV battery fires occurring everyday! However this is far from accurate, and in today’s podcast Robert speaks with Emma Sutcliffe from evfiresafe.com, an organisation dedicated to research, training and enhancing safety for emergency responders attending electric vehicle traction battery fires.
As an operational firefighter herself in Australia, Emma and her team have unprecedented access to front line emergencies, and this podcast is a fascinating look at what they are doing to tackle misinformation and the many unfounded claims pushed by those who are opposed to the electrification of ground transport and the move away from fossil fuels.

- 225 - The Story Behind a ‘Rapid’ Rollout with Robert Barrosa
Electrify America is installing more rapid chargers across the United States than you can poke a stick at. They currently have over 800 charging stations with around 3,500 individual chargers from 150 kW up to 350 kW. They are currently installing 4 new charging stations or hubs every week. This is a seriously rapid roll out. Electrify America have developed ways to reduce strain on local grids with their installation of multiple rapid chargers. Robert Barrosa is the Senior Director of Sales, Business Development & Marketing for Electrify America, and in this week’s episode of the Fully Charged Show Podcast, he explains how this is being achieved and a little bit about the history of the funding that has made much of this expansion possible. In late 2016, the U.S. Justice Department fined VW $30 billion after the company was caught rigging two of its diesel engines to pass U.S. emissions tests. That figure included the funding new zero-emissions vehicle technology and in particular charging networks. Quite a sensible way of using the money from a corporate fine.
