Weight loss is one of our top health concerns, so much so that we keep looking for good ways to lose weight, preferably a way that is easy, effective, and permanent. It turns out that, when properly chosen, certain foods cause weight loss, with no need for the deprivation and planning that most weight-loss regimens require.
In his next book, leading nutrition researcher and author Dr. Neal Barnard reveals three breakthroughs that are supported by research, revealing that certain foods:
1. can reduce the appetite
2. trap calories so they are flushed away and cannot be absorbed, and,
3. increase the body's ability to burn calories for about three hours after each meal. These breakthroughs make weight loss incredibly easy, without calorie counting or deprivation. This diet encourages people to eat, not to stop eating. Dr. Barnard also reveals that some of the foods we think are good for us can actually be harmful, like salmon, goat cheese, and coconut oil, all of which pass easily into body fat...and often overstay their welcome. To make it easy, Dr. Barnard will include a simple to follow meal plan that includes delicious, and even indulgent recipes which include foods we have often been told to avoid, like potatoes and pasta, so you can eat real food, and still lose real weight.
The New Approach to Health:
Using Power Foods to Cause Rapid, Permanent Weight Loss
Scientists have found that certain foods trigger weight loss automatically. Unlike the usual approach to dieting which focuses on going hungry and avoiding the foods you love, the Power Foods approach encourages you to add specific foods that cause weight loss.
Power Foods work in three ways: First, they trigger satiety, taming your appetite so that you naturally eat less. Second, they trap calories in your digestive tract and carry them out with the wastes. Third, they ramp up your metabolism, so you burn calories faster hour after hour.
There are dozens of Power Foods, including common, everyday foods, like blueberries, melons, apples, and asparagus, as well as certain spices (cinnamon, ginger, and hot peppers). Blueberries, for example, get their color from anthocyanins, which have been associated with weight loss in research studies. Cinnamon contains a natural ingredient that boosts metabolism. Weight loss can be as easy as including these foods in your daily routine, say, with French toast made with cinnamon and topped with blueberry syrup.
The Power Foods and how to use them are spelled out in the Power Foods Diet, the new book by Neal Barnard, MD, author of the best-sellers Power Foods for the Brain and The 21-Day Weight-Loss Kickstart.
In this scientifically proven program, Power Foods do the work for you at home, at restaurants—anywhere you eat. You will never count calories again. And while exercise is always a good idea, the program works whether you exercise or not.
The Power Foods Diet includes 120 mouthwatering recipes, from French Toast and Wild Blueberry Muffins to Creamy Chipotle Butternut Soup, Southwest Chili, and Pesto Spaghetti with Broccoli and Sundried Tomatoes. And don’t forget dessert! The Power Foods ingredients are built into Blueberry Pops, Triple Berry No Churn Sorbet, a Fruity Banana Split, and Carrot Cake. There are also plenty of tips for people who prefer convenience foods or who generally eat in restaurants.
The approach is revolutionary:
• Power Foods bring you a healthier weight, healthier cholesterol level, lower blood pressure, and healthier blood sugar.
• Power Foods boost your energy, making you look and feel younger.
• Power Foods let you end “dieting” forever.
• Power Food allow you to enjoy eating again—at home or restaurants. No more skimpy portions.
• Among the Power Foods are those under study for their ability to reduce the risk of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

“Dr. Friedman, I’ve heard how great wine is for our health. Is there a specific type of wine that is considered the healthiest”
-Diane Hudson, Albuquerque New Mexico
“I just listened to your segment called Germs Are Our Friends. It was an eye-opener. You mentioned our cell phone contains 17,000 germs including E. coli. Do you recommend a cleaner I can use to clean my phone?”
-Michelle Bigerson, New Port Richey Fla
“Back in high school in my health class we had a teacher that passed out all these little pieces of paper and he said we're going to find something out about you. Everybody put the piece of paper in their mouths. I was the only one in class that spit and screamed how awful it tasted. I would love to know what that was testing for. I have a sensitivity to certain foods like spinach and cilantro. Also, I can’t stand the taste of beer or wine. It burns my mouth.”
-Charlena Minder, Huntington Beach CA.
“I love hotdogs but I know they are bad for me. Is there any healthier type of hotdog I can eat that’s not made out of wheatgrass or tofu?”
-Andy Foster, Davenport Iowa.
“Dr. Friedman, I suffer from Candida Yeast infection. I go on a cleanse diet and within a few weeks, it always returns. Any suggestions?”
-Brenda Russ, Charlotte NC
“I have carpel tunnel syndrome from being at my computer for 8 hours a day. Any suggestions?”

How does dust get in a house when the doors and windows are always closed?
-Mira Canady, Salt Lake City UtahThu, 30 Jul 2020 - 651 - Encore Episode: Tips To Beat StressStress puts our health at risk, damaging our body’s systems and contributing to irritability, anxiety, depression, headaches, insomnia, and a myriad of other diseases and ailments.
But, people can disarm the harmful effects of stress naturally and holistically. Dr. Bradley Nelson offers these six tips for beating the stress of daily life.- Control what is in you. Eat healthy, live whole foods. The shorter the time from tree to tasting, from ground to gourmet, the more positive energy you will receive. Control what is around you. Stay away from chronically toxic people and situations. Stay off of negative social media. Eliminate clutter, physical and spiritual. Clean lines and open spaces in your living area can provide calmness and serenity. Purge yourself of emotional clutter like trapped emotions. Literally “ground” yourself. This concept is also known as “earthing.” You know that great feeling you have after a day at the beach? That is about more than a day of relaxation. Standing or walking in bare feet in grass, sand, or even on a concrete surface that is immediately above the soil can rid your body of ever-so-damaging negative energy. Embrace joy. As they say, “laughter is the best medicine.” Share random hugs and smiles. Think about all you have to be grateful for and share that gratitude. Keep negative energy at bay with positive thoughts and acts. Slow down and love the little things. Humans have adopted the rat race as a way of life, and it need not be that way. There is nothing and no one more important than YOU. Make sure you have sufficient alone time and use it to enjoy what makes you content. A walk in the woods, smelling fresh-cut grass, watching children play, a day of reading... The possibilities are endless.

Instagram: @DrDFriedmanThu, 24 Oct 2019 - 611 - Encore Episode: Dr. Drew Talks AddictionPain is a huge problem in today's world.
It's how you deal with pain that becomes an even greater issue.
Oral opiate addiction has steadily been on the rise in the last few decades. A whopping 90 percent of oral opiates are consumed in America.
Why has opiate addiction taken such a devastating turn?
According to Dr. Drew Pinsky, a movement began with the premise that pain was being under-treated. Pain became the "fifth vital sign." This movement gained a legal and political presence, and now, there is a giant philosophy that pain is what the patient says it is. There is no objective proof of pain.
And, no good evidence exists that opiates are effective for chronic pain; they were designed for acute pain.
Doctors have a massive responsibility when dealing with chronic pain patients. They must look at history of addiction or family history of addiction. Paying attention to potential abuse risks could mean the difference between life and death.
Remember, addiction is a brain disorder. Just because you can't see it or cut it out doesn't make it any less powerful than something like cancer. It can also have a genetic link.
If you're suffering with pain, there are alternative pain management methods, such as acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, etc.
Listen in as Dr. Drew joins Dr. David Friedman to explain why opiate addiction is so prevalent.Thu, 17 Oct 2019 - 610 - How to Have Conversations that MatterHarnessing the power of communication is a fundamental leadership discipline. Mastering the right conversation skills can build trust, inspire loyalty, and create confidence.
On the other hand, not communicating properly can destroy friendships, ruin a marriage, and stall a career.
Most conversations today are limited to text messages and social media banter. Many of us have lost the ability to have a meaningful conversation.
Celeste Headlee, an expert in the true power of communication, joins Dr. Friedman to discuss how you can improve (and even perfect) your communication skills.Thu, 10 Oct 2019 - 609 - How to Achieve Healthy and Sustained EnergyOne of the most common afflictions impacting people's quality of life is fatigue. It's estimated that 43% of Americans are too tired to think clearly at work, make informed decisions, and be productive.
It's not just the Baby Boomer generation that is feeling rundown. According to a study from the American Psychological Association, millennials are the most stressed out and tired generation.
People of all ages are turning to "quick fixes," like caffeine, sugar, and energy drinks. Unfortunately, these can wreak havoc on the body's hormones and lead to an array of unhealthy conditions.
There's a better way.
Ari Whitten, an energy and fatigue specialist, joins Dr. Friedman to discuss his evidence-based approach to healthy energy enhancement.Thu, 03 Oct 2019 - 608 - No More Excuses! Excuse #1: “I’d love to exercise and cook healthy meals, but I just don’t have the time. I have kids, a full-time job, pets and a spouse to care for and a house to clean.”
Excuse #2: “Times are tough, and I just can’t afford to purchase healthier choices, like organic food.”
Excuse #3: “I eat out a lot, and it’s impossible to eat healthy, especially at fast-food restaurants.”
Excuse #4: “I’ve just eaten something I shouldn’t have, so I might as well go all the way.”
Excuse #5: “I want to eat healthier, but my spouse is a die-hard hamburger and greasy French fry lover.”
Excuse #6: “I am addicted to sweets! I just can’t live without them!”
Excuse #7: “I exercised, so I have earned the right to splurge.”
Excuse #8: “I can eat it because it’s ‘fat free.’”
Excuse #9: “I can’t let food go to waste.”

Dear Dr. Friedman. I’ve been a long-time listener and love your show. My question is about lectins. Instagram: @DrDFriedmanThu, 29 Aug 2019 - 603 - The Dirty Truth About WineThe health benefits of wine seem to be endless.
Research shows wine helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, lowers cholesterol, reduces the risk of cancer and may even extend your lifespan. Having a glass or two of wine each day has even been recommended by the American Heart Association.
But, unfortunately, there’s a dark side of the industry.
Thanks to a lack of regulation on labeling, most wine sold in the U.S contains massive amounts of hidden colorants, pesticide residue, toxins and excessive sugar. To say these additives are unhealthy is an understatement.
A recent analysis found 100% of all wines tested in California contained high levels of glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup, the cancer causing herbicide produced by Monsanto.

Dr. Cole's approach is called the "ketotarian" diet, a game-changer for anyone looking for a healthier way to drop pounds, lower inflammation, and achieve their optimal physical and mental performance.Thu, 15 Aug 2019 - 601 - There's Something Fishy Going OnFor decades, health experts and doctors have warned us on the dangers of getting mercury contamination from eating fish. The FDA doesn't warn the public of the possible dangers of any other food -- just fish.
Then, there are all the media reports on polluted waters and how fish are no longer safe to consume. And of course there are those worried about getting parasites from eating fish.
Fish has been labeled as the "black sheep" of all foods. Dr. Friedman is here to tell you... there's something fishy going on with all these negative reports.
In this episode, he debunks these fish myths and shares why wild-caught fish is the healthiest food you should be eating.

His work revealed five places around the world – dubbed Blue Zones – where people live the longest, healthiest, happiest lives.
Diet plays a significant role. A nutritional regimen based on a plant-based diet (high amounts of complex carbohydrates, medium amounts of protein, and medium amounts of fat) rose to the top as commonalities among these areas.
Specifically, the following are key components:
whole grains greens nuts cooked beans (which is the cornerstone of all areas) Individuals in Blue Zone hot spots also drink moderate amounts of wine and regularly drink coffee and tea.
Another life factor Dan researched was happiness and the characteristics that accompany a fulfilled, happy existence.

The gut helps in our decision making, hence the term “trust your gut” and “what’s your gut instinct telling you?”
People think that love begins in the heart, but actually, it’s in the gut. This is why you get butterflies in your stomach when you fall in love.
Scientists used to believe our emotions originated in the brain but new research shows it may actually come from the gut. Think about that. If you were to hear bad news that a family member was just in a severe car accident, where would you feel pain? Immediately in your gut. This is where the term “gut-wrenching news” comes from.
If you are afraid of heights and you look out of a high-rise building window, you’d feel it in your gut.
The digestive tract controls our personality, mood, and even our hormones.
So, what’s the magical Oz behind the curtain that has so much control over our body? It’s called the microbiome, a group of good microorganisms that live in our gut. When they don’t function properly, this can lead to food intolerance, obesity, irritable bowel syndrome, autoimmune disease, depression, thyroid disease and even cancer.
In this episode, Dr. Friedman shares why so many people have unhealthy guts and what we can do to achieve optimal health.

Unfortunately, chronic illness can often get in the way and derail these goals.
Jaya Jaya Myra knows this all too well. Working as a research scientist, pursuing a PhD in cell and molecular biology, she became incapacitated from a clinically-diagnosed case of fibromyalgia. Unable to work, she tried conventional medical treatments to no avail.
She eventually bounced back to good health through natural, alternative methods.
Jaya Jaya joins Dr. Friedman share her personal journey of healing and to discuss how you can still reach your full potential, despite struggles with chronic illness, daily fatigue, or high stress levels.Thu, 23 May 2019 - 589 - Encore Episode: "What's In Your Water?" with Dr. FriedmanIf you’re constantly struggling with your weight no matter what diet or exercise regimen you try, the water you're drinking could be to blame.
Chemicals called “endocrine disrupters” commonly found in tap water and bottled water can wreak havoc on your hormones, increase your appetite and cause fat cells in your body to expand. In addition, there could be toxins in your drinking water that have been linked to gut issues, food intolerance, autoimmune disease and cancer.
In the early 1990’s, a legal clerk named Erin Brockovich received national media attention when she exposed chromium 6 in the drinking water of Hinkley, California. This contaminated water caused liver damage, reproductive problems, birth defects and cancer! Julia Roberts won an Academy award for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich in the critically acclaimed film. Even with the international press coverage of the water contamination and lawsuit settlement ($333 million,) the problem hasn’t gone away. In fact, it’s gotten worse! Chromium 6 has been detected in the homes of 200 million people in all 50 states.
Americans spend close to 17 billion dollars a year on bottled water believing it’s a healthier option. Actually, the federal government places more purity, testing, and quality control standards on tap water than on bottled water.
Capital One coined the phrase “What’s in your wallet?” In this revealing episode, Dr. David Friedman answers the question, “What’s in your water?” He also shares which water filters are the most effective and the healthiest choice when choosing bottled water.

That statement is on the home page of the "Take Cholesterol to Heart" webpage, an organization Howie Mandel has partnered with to raise awareness about high cholesterol and the treatment options available.
It's a critical conversation to have, with more than 100 million Americans affected.
Howie himself was diagnosed with high cholesterol in his late 30s, but at the time he really didn't realize the importance of the words coming out of his doctor's mouth since he felt generally "healthy." He was prescribed a statin, which he took initially but then quit taking after experiencing some undesirable muscle pain as a side effect.
A year later at his doctor's visit, his cholesterol was through the roof. He then began to really listen, now understanding that his time bomb was ticking.
Howie joins Dr. Friedman to discuss how dangerous high cholesterol can be, why there's not just one statin, and the importance of talking to your doctor about cholesterol and medication options.

Plus, there are so many diets to choose from, deciding on one can be dizzying.
Are your efforts in vain?
According to Jonathan Bailor, your body fights to keep you within a range of about 15 pounds -- also known as your "setpoint weight." New research reveals that you can lower your setpoint and end that battle for good by focusing on the quality of calories you eat, not the quantity.
In his book, The Setpoint Diet, Bailor discusses how to reprogram your body with a 21-day plan that will rev up your metabolism, eliminate inflammation, heal your hormones, repair your gut, and get your body working like that of a naturally thin person... permanently.
Listen as Bailor joins Dr. Friedman to explain how you can overcome your dieting struggles, lose weight naturally, and find your "thin" you.Thu, 02 May 2019 - 569 - The Healing Power of Music
Music is something most people enjoy but research shows it also has therapeutic and healing properties.
Music can help decrease chronic pain and lower depression. The right song can stimulate serotonin and dopamine levels, the body’s neurotransmitters that regulate emotional well-being. It can help lower heart rate, blood pressure, and reduce the stress hormone called cortisol.
Joining Dr. Friedman is Bill Protzmann, an accomplished musician who has spent decades studying the healing power of music.
He is a successful IT entrepreneur who holds magna cum laude degrees in piano performance and creative writing. He’s an Associate Member of the American Music Therapy Association and a member of the Healing Music Organization.
Dr. Friedman chats with Bill on how to use music functionally in everyday situations including improving performance at work, strengthening communication and relationship skills, and combatting depression.Thu, 23 Nov 2023
