Boise – requiring adequate shelter beds for the unhoused population before the criminalization of “camping” – that this case is attempting to overturn, and framing it within the context of the 8th Amendment’s prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment. After further contextualizing this case within the West Coast’s ongoing crusade against the houseless, and tackling how a Court desperate to undermine the 8th Amendment is likely to handle it, Shamshiri turns to Idaho and Moyle v. United States, and the Supreme Court’s impending decision on whether the US Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act requiring necessary care in life-threatening situations should override Idaho’s stringent abortion ban (it should). Next, Peter, Sam, and Emma parse through Starbucks v. McKinney, Starbucks’ challenge to the NLRB’s lower standards for court injunctions, allowing them to rush to prevent potential unfair labor practices while they assess the situation, and what the Supreme Court’s likely anti-labor decision will mean for the future of the NLRB, before wrapping up with a conversation on the “novel” case around Donald Trump’s presidential immunity, and what dwindling faith in the Supreme Court means for the American legal profession.

Happy Monday! Sam is back from vacation! He and Emma speak with Ari Berman, national voting rights correspondent at Mother Jones, to discuss his recent book Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s imminent invasion of Rafah (in the wake of weeks of bombing), Israeli officials’ fears of ICC arrest warrants, the absurd debate over university student activism and whether silencing free speech is the true free speech, Mike Johnson’s speakership, presidential polling, the UAW, and Kristi Noam’s screwing of the pooch, before parsing deeper through the insane response from University administrators at Columbia, Emory, and Ohio State, threatening their students with eviction, violence, and more in the face of protests. Ari Berman then joins, as he, Sam, and Emma touch on his history reporting on voting rights with MR, and how “Minority Rule” serves as a culmination of his reporting on modern-day efforts at the GOP’s undemocratic takeover and how they play into an ever-shifting battle between democracy and elite rule. Stepping back, Berman looks to America’s inception and the central role the US Constitution played in bolstering the US’ constraints on popular rule, with institutions like the Senate, Supreme Court, and Electoral College all serving to act as checks to the people’s power of democracy and federalism. Moving forward, Abe walks Sam and Emma through some of the major periods of democratic progress and (largely racist) backlash in US history, including reconstruction’s shift towards a multi-racial democracy and the following minoritarian overthrow in the South that established Jim Crow rule, and the major progress made under the Civil Rights Movement – which saw a variety of voting-right legislation passed over the 1970s – and the GOP’s reaction that we’re still dealing with today. Parsing deeper into this latter era, Berman looks at the role played by folks like Pat Buchanan in pushing the GOP back toward their project of minoritarian rule, establishing the blueprint of the GOP’s takeover of the undemocratic institutions of US politics and the establishment of a network of think tanks and foundations to shape the generations to come. After an extensive conversation on how the politics (and normalization) of Pat Buchanan paved the way for a Donald Trump presidency, grounded in culture war and white resentment, and how the GOP’s takeover of Wisconsin politics at the outset of the 2010s provided an easy laboratory for anti-democratic policy, Berman wraps up the interview with a plea for the Democratic Party to recognize and strategize against these institutional threats to US democracy, and how refusing to do so paves the way for the likes of Donald Trump.

Then she speaks with comedian Kate Willett! First, Emma runs through updates on the brutal assault on Emory students and faculty protesting genocide and cop-city by the Atlanta police, mass arrests of anti-war protesters on college campuses across the US, Israel’s imminent invasion of Rafah, US troops’ presence in Chad, Trump’s legal woes, Net Neutrality, the climate crisis, and new anti-trans legislation out of Tennessee, before parsing through some rather telling comments from the ongoing Supreme Court case about Trump’s potential immunity as President, with representation going as far as to make space for immunity over extra-judicial assassinations. Owen Jones then joins, as he and Emma reflect on the last seven months of constant scenes of devastation and genocide coming out of Gaza, and the mainstream media’s heart-wrenching insistence on downplaying the horror, denying the deaths, and running cover for Israel’s project of ethnic cleansing under the guise of victimhood. Expanding on this, Jones and Emma explore how the severe repression and propaganda from mainstream Western political institutions is seeing an en-masse public awakening to the genocide of Gaza, and the Western elites’ violent commitment to controlling the discourse, with supposed “liberal democracies” from the US to the EU and UK defaming anti-zionist Jews and anti-semites and uplifting actual racists and Jew-haters as legitimate actors. After parsing through the absurdity of the media’s insistence on ignoring the obvious rhetoric and policy that has shaped Israel’s approach to this entire war, Owen steps back to look to the role of the UK in particular, with the Labor Party’s step back from the coalition of Jeremy Corbin at the end of the last decade, and committing itself fully to Israel’s agenda of dehumanization and hasbara. Wrapping up, Jones walks Emma through the performative cruelty of the UK’s Tory government’s ongoing illegal and immoral deportation scheme for asylum seekers. Kate Willet also joins, as she and Emma discuss the repression of left-wing beliefs in the supposedly “liberal” entertainment industry, and the growing trend of the industry’s support for right-wing reactionary comics. Kate and the MR Team explore the attempt to present left-wing comedy as hyper-politicized and right-wing comedy as almost de-politicized, before wrapping up by touching on the difficulty of escaping the self-censorship pushed on women and lefties when it comes to speaking out about politics.

It’s an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Gretchen Sisson, sociologist at the University of California, San Francisco, to discuss her recent book Relinquished: The Politics of Adoption and the Privilege of American Motherhood. Then, she speaks with Ryan Doerfler, law professor at Harvard University, to discuss his recent piece in Dissent Magazine entitled "We Are Already Defying the Supreme Court", co-authored with Samuel Moyn. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump’s immunity and hush money cases, the US’ new foreign aid package, Israel’s impending invasion of Rafah, continuing crackdowns on anti-war student protests in the US, Arizona politics, Harvey Weinstein, the TikTok ban, the resignation of Ariel Henry, and repression of dissent in Iran, before expanding on the conversation about activism on campuses, and the GOP’s insistence on maintaining the parallels with the 1960s anti-war movement. Gretchen Sisson then joins, first walking through extensive research she conducted with women who have relinquished children to the private adoption system, exploring how and why they make the decision, and how they reflect on the process some years later. Next, Sisson walks Emma through the myth of the relationship between abortion and adoption, and the reality of a distinct divide between those who seek the two options, alongside the myth of a “high supply” in the adoption market, with (once again) the inverse seeing many adoption clinics closing due to a lack of available children for adoption. Expanding on this, Gretchen explores how the “market” influence of the adoption industry shapes a largely coercive and exploitative relationship between adoption agencies and women who would often prefer to keep their children, a relationship that is largely reflective of the industry’s roots in the family separation projects practiced against Indigenous and Black communities in the US. After touching on the major role that major Christian religious institutions have played throughout the history of the private adoption industry, and the relationship between private adoption and the foster care system, Emma and Gretchen wrap up the interview with an exploration of how many mothers come to feel very critical of the adoption system and how it failed both them and their child. Professor Ryan Doerfler and Emma then look to the long history of non-compliance – and even outright defiance – in the face of Supreme Court rulings considered unjust, with Professor Doerfler walking us through the more extreme precedents set by the presidencies of Abraham Lincoln and FDR to issue direct challenges to the court, alongside the much more recent tradition of administrative non-compliance or policy loopholes as seen in the fights for affirmative action, student loan forgiveness, and more. After stepping back to look at the myth of Marbury v. Madison’s role in legitimizing judicial activism – a tactic that the Supreme Court would not truly take on until the Civil War era, Professor Doerfler explores how the conversation around the ever-changing scope of the Supreme Court became isolated from the public to solely and intra-governmental affair over the second half of the 20th Century, in a weird conflation of the rule of law and the rule of the courts. Ryan and Emma look at the current era of backlash to the Supreme Court, from the Hobbs decision to attacks on the administrative state, and what we can do to get Democrats to start fighting back, before wrapping up with a brief conversation on the stunning bravery of anti-war student activists at Harvard and across the US.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder as they watch Channel 4’s interview with an anonymous IDF member on the prevailing perspectives within Israel’s military, also diving into the continuing wave of student protests against Israel’s genocide in Gaza, and the violent police repression seen at UT Austin, USC, and Emory that has continued the parallels with the 1960s anti-war movement on campuses like Kent State. They also dive into the continuing smears against students from both Netanyahu and the ADL alike, and watch Edward Said attempt to grapple with the same double standards some four decades ago. It’s an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Max Felker-Kantor, associate professor of history at Ball State University, to discuss his recent book DARE to Say No: Policing and the War on Drugs in Schools. Then, she speaks with journalist Erin Reed, author of the Erin In The Morning newsletter on SubStack, to discuss the recent gender identity review by the National Health Services (NHS) in the United Kingdom. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s ongoing assault on Rafah, ongoing institutional support for Israel’s genocide among the US government and major corporations, US sanctions against Iran, the White House’s climate stance, Boeing hearings, Disneyland unionization, Biden’s polling numbers, Mike Johnson’s failing speakership, and the Senate’s rejection of the Mayorkas impeachment sham, before parsing a little deeper through the recent report on the horrendous abuse and torture of Palestinian hostages in Israel and the ongoing showdown between Columbia University’s anti-zionist student body, and hyper-zionist institutional leadership. Professor Max Felker-Kantor then joins, diving right into the evolution of DARE’s prevalence in US schools and society, and how it got its start with the LAPD. First, Professor Felker-Kantor walks Emma through the precursor to DARE, with LA Chief of Police Darrel Gates’ strategy throughout the 1970s to send undercover officers into schools to bust drug dealers – a project that had been failing as the War on Drugs kicked into full swing by the end of the decade – and his subsequent attempt to shift from cracking down on the supply end of the War on Drugs, to cracking down on the demand. Expanding on this, Felker-Kantor explores the creation of DARE as a joint venture between the LAPD and local schools, with officers essentially becoming ingrained the education environment and classrooms, even going as far as to pitch themselves as friends and mentors to the students, and quickly taking off across the US over the 1980s, before walking through the slow collapse of the program as more and more evidence came out about the strategy’s failure in preventing drug addiction or exposure. Wrapping up, Max walks Emma through the extensive funding network of the DARE program, beginning with internal LAPD funding before quickly expanding to state and federal grants over the 1980s and start of the ‘90s, and why its particular ability to cling to its non-profit status has allowed it to remain, in some capacity, as a global organization today. Erin Reed and Emma then jump right into the background for the UK’s recent Cass Report on transgender care, stepping back to briefly cover the rise of transphobic activism in the UK at the end of the 2010s, and the major policy impacts it had despite fringe following, including the NHS-sponsored ‘independent’ and ‘unbiased’ review by Hillary Cass. After giving some background on the evidently not-so-unbiased Cass herself, Reed parses through the clear failure of the report itself to live up to these supposed standards, actively excluding both trans voices and experts on trans care from the report, relying on outdated and fraudulent statistics (compiled by notorious homophobes nonetheless), and repeatedly requiring absurdly high standards for trans care – standards not met by the vast majority of both adult and pediatric care – while rarely substantiating any of the claims about the supposed dangers.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they talk with Colin from Missouri about sports team owners extorting taxpayers, address the absurdity of “woke” segregation, and watch Professor Ruha Benjamin absolutely nail her acceptance speech for a Spelman College honorary degree by calling out institutional support for genocide and white supremacy. They also dive into the ongoing suppression of student activist voices on college campuses right now, with a particular focus on Columbia University’s ongoing campus activism and the administrative backlash, before talking with Genevieve from Tucson about Operation Olive Branch’s work helping Palestinians in Gaza. Sam speaks with Daniel Poppen, member of the union organizing committee at the Trader Joe’s location in the North Center neighborhood of Chicago, to discuss the staff’s decision to file for a union election. Then, he speaks with Matt Bruenig, founder of the People’s Policy Project, author of the NLRB Edge newsletter, and co-host of “The Bruenigs” podcast, to discuss his recent NLRB filing against Steven Crowder. First, Sam reacts to State Dept. spokesperson Matthew Miller refusing to answer the Associated Press's Matt Lee's question about why they've been unable to verify whether Israel struck an Iranian diplomatic target in Syria. Then, Sam's joined by Dan Poppen as they take us through the steps that led the Trader Joe's North Center location in Chicago to vote for a union election. Dan discusses some of the issues that have been facing Trader Joe's workers, the inspiration they've received from other unionizing Trader Joe's locations around the country, and what they can anticipate going forward after the vote totals are finalized. Then, Sam is joined by Matt Bruenig to discuss his representation of Jared Monroe, AKA "Not Gay Jared", the former "Louder With Crowder" employee, who has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) against Steven Crowder and the company. Bruenig outlines the main pillars that constitute the NLRB complaint, and provides some context to Jared's experience while working for Steven Crowder, what that entailed, and what they're hoping to achieve as the complaint is arbitrated and decided upon.

And in the Fun Half, Sam reacts to Google employees demonstrating and conducting sit-ins against Google's work with Israel in their New York and California offices. He and Matt then check in on Speaker Johnson's tightrope walk, attempting to pass a supplemental foreign aid bill, which his far-right faction doesn't want. Johnson, who's now referring to him as a "wartime Speaker", is losing soldiers as an outline has been revealed, with Pennsylvania Rep. Scott Perry complaining that there's no border funding in the legislation (it was in another bill that Perry and his cohort didn't support). On the other end, former Kevin McCarthy confidant Rep. Garret Graves asks the all-important question: "What are Republicans getting" from this supplemental? And now, Speaker Johnson is only being offered tepid support from former President Trump, who is now willing to wait and see what happens to him with the motion to vacate looming over his head. Sam and Matt then turn to Trump's hush money trial, with Trump attorney and spokesperson Alina Habba telling Fox's Martha McCallum that Trump will be regarded like *wait for it* Nelson Mandela if he were to be put in jail for violating his gag order. Sam covers the recent Politico scoop of comedian Rob Schneider tanking a performance in front of Senate Republicans and their staffers, before diving into Trump's recent rally this weekend where he heard chants of "Genocide Joe!", to which he responded in part by saying: "You're not wrong". And, finally, Sam and Matt step into Dave Rubin's corner, where Rubin discusses his concerns about his inability to "arbitrage" the divide between the left and the right. Then, they check in on Dave's conversation with Will Cain from last week, where Dave tries his absolute hardest to take shots at Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens while *trying his absolute hardest* not to actually take shots at Tucker Carlson or Candace Owens. Matt Duss then joins, first parsing through the context for Iran’s retaliation against Israel, including the consistent communication between Iran and the US, and clear intent from Iran to deescalate in the wake of their attack on Israeli military facilities, before touching on the conflict between the genuine threat of rising tensions in the region and the understanding that this response could have been much worse. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Dylan Penningroth, professor of Law and History at the University of California, Berkeley, to discuss his recent book Before The Movement: The Hidden History of Black Civil Rights. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Iran’s military-specific retaliation to Israel’s bombing of their consulate, Trump’s ongoing hush money trial, FISA renewal, Mike Johnson’s Ukraine package, dropping violent crime and burglary rates, Haiti’s “ruling council,” Tesla’s mass firing, and Biden’s polling, before diving a little deeper into the rationality behind Iran’s approach to Israeli violence. Professor Dylan Penningroth then joins, diving right into the personal story behind his decades-long research into the major evolution of Black civil rights as a concept. Stepping back, Professor Penningroth, looks to the 19th-century conceptualization of Black civil rights, with a particular distinction from any political or social rights, carving out a minuscule space in civil society where Black people were given very particular privileges, first contextualizing what these “civil” privileges entailed (largely relating to low-level contract and property law), before walking through the evolution of these rights in both the reconstruction era and during the subsequent White Supremacist backlash at the turn of the 20th Century. Expanding on this, Penningroth walks through Lincoln’s role in enumerating the ideology of separate political, social, and civil rights in the US (with only the latter needed for true equality), and the consistent pushback from Black activists from the 1830s through the 1960s, insisting that both social and political rights were needed to guarantee the civil. Wrapping up, Dylan walks Sam and Emma through how the mainstream conceptualization of civil rights evolved from the Party of Lincoln to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Biden Administration’s careful approach to ongoing developments between Iran and Israel, dive into coverage of Trump’s hush money trial (and MR’s potential coverage), and discuss AOC’s growing role in the Democratic Party. Digby then joins, diving right into Arizona’s recent State Supreme Court decision that reverted the state to an 1860s law criminalizing abortion, the GOP responding to the ongoing abortion pressure by attempting to make the 15-week appear like a moderate position, and the lies behind the right-wing’s “exceptions” and “states rights” arguments. Next, they look to Donald Trump’s legal woes, as Heather walks Sam and Emma through the genuine threat Trump feels from his hush money trial, first exploring the tabloid fears before tackling the political consequences of a campaign finance violation that has already put Michael Cohen in jail (admittedly on federal charges), before wrapping up with what to expect from this case’s development now that it’s in Alvin Bragg’s court. Mark Bankston then joins, first updating Sam and Emma on the developments in his case representing Ben Brody, who was publicly accused by Elon Musk of being a Neo Nazi involved in a Neo Nazi brawl despite being a 22-year-old Jewish college student in a different state, including the case’s development into discovery and hearings. Next, Bankston breaks down his newest case representing Mauricio Garcia, who was wrongfully identified as the Alan, Texas Neo Nazi shooter by myriad right-wing media outlets from Fox and Newsmax to TimCast and Louder with Crowder, with no retraction or apology despite the obvious journalistic malpractice involved, cementing their lies and attacks on Garcia. Expanding on this, Mark, Sam, and Emma tackle the complete resistance to accountability from the defendants in this case so far, with some even going as far as to downplay the media corrections, from refusing to show the correct photo after showing the wrong one (*cough* Tim Pool *cough*) to fully dubbing the corrections a psyop, before wrapping up with a brief preview of the future of this case.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Ben Shapiro and Charlie Kirk go all in on the GOP’s new plan to straight-up lie to the American public about their abortion agenda, and listen to Jesse Watters struggle to mathematically conceptualize someone making less than $100k per year, plus, your IMs!

Then, they speak with Terri Gerstein, director of the Wagner Labor Initiative at New York University, to discuss the recent efforts in different states to weaken or strengthen child labor laws. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Arizona’s major State Supreme Court decision, Biden’s rhetorical and policy developments on Israel, inflation, immigration policy, EPA, ESDA, and FAA operations, and the candidacies of RFK and Cornel West, before diving a little deeper into Arizona’s Supreme Court decision reverting the state’s reproductive policy to an 1864 law. Jeremy Kimbrell then joins, diving right into his history working at Mercedes’ Alabama plant of around 5,000, and the progressive attempts to organize one of two (the other being in South Carolina) Mercedes plans not represented by a collective bargaining agreement, with the major revelations at the UAW in the wake of COVID coming about at the perfect time, and allowing the plant to begin their unionization efforts with the backing of a major union. After tackling the major emphasis on a democratic organizing process, Kimbrell steps back to parse through the recent unfair labor practice filings the plant has filed against Mercedes both domestically, and in German courts, and how they could play into the ongoing unionization process. Terri Gerstein then walks Sam and Emma through the role of child labor law in the US, largely setting stronger safety and work regulations for child labor on both the federal and state levels, and what ongoing attacks from the right are doing to undermine these regulations, including gutting permit requirements and redefining work to allow kids to work in previously-considered-hazardous workplaces. After looking at the particular roles of “fissured workplaces,” and right-wing state legislatures in worsening this issue, wrapping up the interview by tackling the additional issue of the US’ incredibly weak mechanisms of labor enforcement and accountability, and how we can start to change that.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with David Masciotra, author, lecturer and journalist based in Indiana, to discuss his recent book Exurbia Now: The Battleground of American Democracy. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s continuing operations in the ethnic cleansing of Gaza, mounting pressure on Biden to halt weapons transfers to Israel, Sec. Mayorkas’ impeachment, student debt relief, unionization, and Mike Johnson’s Ukraine aid package, before diving into Donald Trump’s new middle-ground stance on abortion legislation, and the subtle backlash from his evangelical base. David Masciotra then joins, first outlining the definition of the “exurbs” – distinct from suburbia due to its lower density and greater distance from urban centers, yet much wealthier and with much more robust infrastructure than rural areas – and exploring the particular role they play in bolstering far-right politics electorally. After contextualizing the rise of exurbs as a late-stage development of white flight beginning in the mid-‘90s, with real estate firms building up isolated communities in previously rural towns and using exclusionary politics and property tax gimmicks to recruit those still escaping the growing diversity of urban centers and even some suburban areas, Masciotra walks Sam and Emma through the infrastructure of exurbia’s isolation, with residents largely working outside of their towns while all civic, media, and commercial roles are taken over by mega-churches, casinos, and massive corporations, resulting in little-to-no connection with their community, much less the outside world. Wrapping up, David explores the major issue that comes with addressing these severely isolated communities, particularly when their “problems” largely arise from reactionary cultural issues grounded in racial resentment and Christian nationalism, and why our hope in conquering this issue lies in on-the-ground and bottom-up organizing.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into the increasing pressure on Biden to halt weapons transfers to Israel after the IDF’s slaughter of the employees of DC’s favorite Chef José Andrés, Bernie Sanders’ staunch rejection of Biden’s rhetorical posturing of anger with Netanyahu, and Jonathan Guyer’s recent reporting on the role of one Brett McGurk in Biden’s Israel policy (particularly when it comes to the risk of expanding the conflict into a regional war). Then, she speaks with Mya Frazier, journalist based in Columbus, Ohio, to discuss her recent piece in Harper’s entitled “The Eviction Experts.” First, Emma runs through updates on +972’s recent report on Israel’s use of AI technology to bomb the families of Palestinian targets, Biden’s supposed “anger” over Israel’s slaughter of World Central Kitchen workers, Israeli elections, Donald Trump’s legal woes, Ukraine’s war efforts, labor action in Alabama and Chicago, fascism in Texas and Alabama, and emissions reporting, before watching Richard Haass’ call for sanctions against Israel. Arvin Alaigh then joins, first walking through what New Jersey’s “ballot line” voting entailed, and how it drastically reduces the chances of outsider and non-county-endorsed candidates in state primaries. Stepping back, Alaigh walks Emma through the corrupt politics that the ballot line policy has enabled, with two major culprits, Governor Phil Murphy and Senator Bob Menendez, also inspiring the most recent scandal, with Gov. Murphy using his power to push his wife onto the preferred ballot spot to replace recently-indicted Sen. Menendez’s seat, seeing opposition Andy Kim file suit with no pushback from even Murphy’s allies. Wrapping up, Arvin tackles the current state of the suit, and the ongoing injunction against New Jersey’s ballot line policy. Mya Frazier then brings Emma through a brief history of her reporting on eviction and tenant-landlord power dynamics, and how reporting on the wave of evictions in the wake of the end of the COVID-19 eviction moratorium brought her to a corporate landlord conference of the Columbus Apartment Association. Expanding on this, Frazier walks through the major role that tech companies and startups played at the conference, advertising their ability to automate and streamline much of the landlord process, and how the automation trend plays with the increasing private consolidation of housing to severely undermines the power of tenants, bringing mass and constant eviction crisis to places like Columbus (Ohio). Next, Frazier parses through the severe necessity (and near impossibility) of federal housing regulation for tenants’ rights, before wrapping up with a who’s who of the consolidation of the housing market.

Next, James walks through his recent and ongoing cases in the industry, before expanding on his ongoing cases suing the state DOE and DHR over approving the institutionalizing of children in sub-standard educational settings, and what the success of those cases could mean moving forward. Mike Papantonio of Levin Papantonio Rafferty then talks with Sam about the importance of holding corporations accountable for their crimes against the public, looking into his case against HSBC over their laundering of money for international criminal enterprises and terrorist organizations, why legal structures make it that even the worst of corporate associations can only be punished through civil means, and why, without actual criminal consequences, corporate accountability will continue to be a fantasy. Andy Childers, also from Levin Papantonio Rafferty, then joins to update us on his ongoing case regarding Abbott Labs and Johnson and Johnson’s continued marketing of cow’s milk formulas to preterm infants despite repeated and clear evidence that it has severe health effects in premature babies, including necrotizing enterocolitis, and the arguments this case hinges on. Anelle Sheline then joins, diving right into the context for her resignation in protest from Biden’s State Department, exploring her work on Yemen that preceded joining the government, and the continuing human rights work she participated in over the first year of her contract with the government. After parsing through the major factor – Biden’s continuing support for Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza – for her resignation, Sheline parses through some of the greater (albeit immaterial) dissent within the Biden government, including a State Department that is well-prepared to begin enforcing the human rights and arm-sales policies that the US is currently circumventing to support Israel’s war, also touching on why the electoral pressure of the “uncommitted” vote is having the biggest sway on Biden in terms of dissent. Next, Anelle walks Emma through the greater implications of Biden’s support for apartheid on a global scale, including how it plays into the US’ already degrading status on the international stage following the Iraq War and Donald Trump, and Israel’s continuing insistence on expanding the conflict throughout the Middle East, before wrapping up by touching on the role of the Abraham Accords in pushing this conflict, and the overwhelming domestic dissent facing Israel’s occupation (despite warming relations with some regimes). Emma also parses through the various “uncommitted” movements in today’s democratic primaries, and Wisconsin’s ballot initiatives.

Sam and Emma speak with Yanis Varoufakis, economics professor and former Finance Minister of Greece, to discuss his recent book Technofeudalism: What Killed Capitalism. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on continuing US arms sales to Israel, infrastructure regulation, Florida’s Medicaid dump, New Jersey’s ballot design, and new reports on racial biases in medicine, also watching Christiane Amanpour talk with Zahiro-Shahar Mor about Israel’s failing genocide. Professor Yanis Varoufakis then joins, first walking through the evolution from Feudalism’s formula of land ownership and rent extraction to Capitalism’s formula of the ownership of the means of production and profit extraction, before diving into his concept of “Technofeudalism,” a rising system of digital fiefdoms – Amazon a primary example – where products not produced by the owner of the platforms are sold with a massive rent extraction. Expanding on this, Professor Varoufakis explores the role of these platforms’ ownership of the means of behavioral modification (via the extraction of data, once again, not produced by them) as an example of what he calls “cloud capital,” which takes up massive proportions of the global GDP and siphons it off from the labor market, before stepping back to analyze the role of the 2008 financial crisis and the commitment to the neoliberal dynamic of austerity for the people, socialism for the banks, in allowing the private world to funnel massive amounts of investment into cloud capital and allow existing companies (Meta, Google, Amazon, etc) to establish these digital fiefdoms. Wrapping up, Professor Yanis Varoufakis tackles the role that various fiscal and anti-trust policies, the idea of a bill of digital rights, and workplace democratization could play in helping to reclaim and reshape these technofeudalist fiefdoms.

DeSantis, and NBC v. Ronna McDaniel, before parsing through the legacy of a broken healthcare system that Joe Lieberman leaves. Casey Michel then joins, diving right into Orbán’s role as Hungary’s authoritarian Prime Minister, serving his 14th year, and far-right icon in the war against “wokeness” and democracy. Expanding on this, Michel parses through Orbán’s recent low-key visit to the US to meet with the Heritage Foundation, walking through the nationalist parallels between Trump and Orbán (particularly with their evangelical bases), the influence that modern autocrats like Putin and original fascists like Mussolini have provided to Orbán regime, and how the US far-right think tanks are attempting to pick up on his blueprint. Professor Joel Thornton then walks Emma through the context for IQAir’s recent report on the severe standing of air quality globally in 2023, including the for-profit incentives of the company, and the wide breadth of standards for the research, before stepping back to explore what we can glean from the report, and the genuine state of air pollution. Expanding on this, Professor Thornton explores the major role climate change has played in offsetting the progress various countries have made in containing the proliferation of particulates, with 2023’s myriad forest fires playing a major role in the year’s problem of air quality, and assesses the major effects these particulates can have on human health, impacting everything from the respiratory tract to cognitive function.
