But for today’s students, things have changed. In this episode of Outside the Box, we meet Student Guidance Counselor at CBS, Thomas Gylling. He’s a guy who owns 70 pairs of shoes and loves travelling to interesting food locations. He’s also a great listener who focuses clearly on student wellbeing. Mon, 25 Feb 2019 - 27min - 34 - When stress and guilt take over exams
Stress levels among Danish students are skyrocketing. Since 2013, the number of students between the ages of 25 to 34 who feel stressed has risen from 29.3 to 41.3 percent. And there’s nothing to indicate that the curve will stop its upward climb. But what’s the best way to handle the familiar cocktail of physical stress and guilt that crop up during the exam period? We got hold of Line Jønsson Vørre who changed her exam routine and has gone from being an unhappy, stressed-out student to being calm and relaxed. Plus, we ask theologian Camilla Sløk to help us understand what this constant barrage of bad conscience and guilt is all about, that’s crippling Danish students. And of course, we ask the question: What can universities like CBS do to reduce the amount of guilt that exams can create? Participants: Associate professor Camilla Sløk and CBS-student Line Jønsson Vørre.

Tue, 29 Jan 2019 - 50min - 32 - The Danish song is a young blonde girl – a song and a shitstorm later
CBS came under heavy fire when it became clear that professor Mads Mordhorst had apologized for singing Kai Hoffman and composer Carl Nielsen’s ‘Den danske sang er en ung blond pige/The Danish song is a young blonde girl’ during a morning meeting at the school. The apology was given because a teacher present at the meeting felt excluded by the song, as she was nothing like a young blonde girl. But what concerns – if any – should we consider before we let our vocal cords sound at public institution? Press play and dive deeper into the case that sparked one of the most furious debates about values in 2018. Participants: Politician Nikolaj Bøgh, senior communication consultant Anne Kirstine Cramon, anthropologist Karen Lisa Salamon
Tue, 15 Jan 2019 - 37min - 31 - CBS Wire - When Christmas dinner leaves a bad taste
December is upon us and it’s once again time for the dreaded and celebrated Christmas dinner – the Danish ‘julefrokost’. The annual cocktail of schnapps, Christmas beer and copy room canoodling are an institution in Denmark. But that doesn’t prevent us from feeling a substantial amount of guilt and shame the morning after. We had a chat with theologian Camilla Sløk to examine why and how the guilt and shame manifests itself doing the so-called ‘season to be jolly’. Participants: Camilla Sløk, Christian Hamborg and Mads Bjergfelt
Wed, 28 Nov 2018 - 20min - 30 - CBS Wire – A priceless guide to prices
It often dictates what we’ll have for dinner, where we’ll go on our next vacation, and what Christmas presents we’ll buy for our loved ones. Yes, you guessed it – price. Those small digits that determine the value of our needs and desires. PHD fellow Stefan Sløk-Madsen gave us a better understanding of the concept of price when we asked him: Why is the price of diamonds higher than that of fresh water, when one is necessary to our survival and the other is nothing more than a solid piece of carbon? Participants: Stefan Sløk-Madsen
Fri, 09 Nov 2018 - 23min - 29 - CBS Wire - Don’t laugh yourself to sleep
It’s not every day that a Master thesis from CBS gets to do the media rounds. Nonetheless it can happen (as three students from Political Communication and Management found out) if you criticize some of the most watched, heard and read political news satire formats in the whole of Denmark. Stine Bagger Vium, Vibeke Finnemann Scheel and Caroline Boas have taken political news satire under the microscope – not only to analyze the enormous potential this genre holds, but to make us mindful of the potential pitfalls we can end up in when we press play and have a laugh at our favorite satire output. Participant: Caroline Boas

Tue, 25 Sep 2018 - 27min - 26 - CBS WIRE - When 12 isn’t enough
It happens every year. Young Danes apply for their dream education and the media responds with article upon article about which courses can display the most jaw-dropping Grade Point Average. As is customary, International Business at CBS draws headlines with its entry requirements busting the 7-point grading scale – and this year was no different. A grade point average of 12,2 was needed to get in, and for the majority of Danish high school students this average is beyond unachievable. But not for the new International Business students. You can meet two of them and one of their lecturers in our new podcast where we try to answer the question: Who are the new International Business students? Press play and enjoy. Participants: Caroline Termansen, Nicole Jørgensen and Herdis Steingrimsdottir.

Wed, 27 Jan 2021 - 16min - 19 - You used to call me on my cell phone...
These are the words that famous R&B musician Drake sang in his massive hit ‘Hotline Bling’. That was back in 2015, and now, five years later, Drake’s words are more in tune with reality than ever. In 2018, figures from the Danish Energy Agency and the phone company 3 showed that the Danes are increasingly turning their backs on phone conversations. That year, the Danes spoke one billion fewer minutes on the phone than in 2017. And if we glance at the statistics since 2005, one in every four phone calls have disappeared. In other words, phone conversations may slowly end up being over and out. In this podcast, Jesper Tække, Associate Professor of Media Studies at Aarhus University, and Bent Meier Sørensen, Professor at the Department of Management, Politics and Philosophy, each give their professional perspectives on what makes phone conversations so unique, how they contribute to our conversation skills, and what the consequences would be if we stop calling each other. Enjoy!
