- 249 - What to Avoid When Gardening With Osteoporosis
Gardening is an excellent physical activity that people of all ages can enjoy. It isn't just a pastime; it's a sanctuary of growth and vitality. But those with Osteoporosis may worry that pain and the fear of fractures will mean giving up their gardens.
If you feel severe pain while gardening, stop and consult your doctor. However, Osteoporosis should not prevent you from enjoying some form of gardening.
A significant benefit of gardening is that it's like having a workout in a pleasant and healthy environment. As you cultivate your garden, your body engages in weight-bearing and resistance activities that contribute to better health as long as you move safely.
Having Osteoporosis does not mean giving up the things you love doing. Enjoy your garden and smell the flowers!
In this episode, I demonstrate seven things you must avoid when gardening with Osteoporosis and what you should do instead.
Thank you for listening to another informative episode of the Happy Bones, Happy Life podcast!
“Be aware of your posture when you're in the garden and enjoy the garden. It's so wonderful—you're getting Vitamin D, you're out in the sun, it's relaxing, you're connected to nature, and you're planting. What could be better? And when you avoid these positions and use posture and body mechanics, you can do this safely. So it's a win-win situation.” - Margie Bissinger

Tue, 07 May 2024 - 25min - 248 - Why Mental Health Matters If You Have Osteoporosis With Dr. Christina Bjorndal, ND
Many people take good care of their bodies but don't pay much attention to their mental health. Often, they associate stress and anxiety as a natural part of life. But the effect of mental stress, such as eating disorders, smoking, or physical inactivity, also threatens a person's physical well-being.
In this episode, Dr. Christina Bjorndal and I discuss the link between mental and physical health and how you can experience complete healing from the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects.
Dr. Chris is a licensed naturopathic doctor and established keynote speaker on regaining your mental health using a naturopathic approach. She is one of the only licensed NDs in Canada who is considered an authority in the treatment of mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, eating disorders, ADD/ADHD, OCD, and schizoaffective disorders.
For years, Dr. Chris endured debilitating depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety and battled bulimia, addiction, and a range of other mental health challenges. Finally, feeling terrorized by her thoughts, she attempted to take her life. This devastating low point led to a profound reckoning. She began to take back control of her life. Today, she owns a thriving naturopathic clinic, living her life’s purpose and passion in the most authentic way.
Her latest book, “Beyond the Label,” will give you the courage, support, confidence, and guidance you need to take the steps toward mental wellness.
Thank you for listening to another informative episode of the Happy Bones, Happy Life podcast!

Tue, 30 Apr 2024 - 44min - 247 - How to Increase Bone Density Through the Onero™ Osteoporosis Exercise Program With Dr. Belinda Beck
Just because you have Osteoporosis doesn’t mean you can no longer lead an active lifestyle or you have to stay indoors to minimize the risk of falls and fractures.
Certain kinds of high-intensity loading can be safe and effective even for people with low bone mass if supervised under the right conditions. And that's what Dr. Belinda Beck and I are discussing today.
Dr. Belinda Beck, a powerhouse in the field of bone health, holds a BMHS(Ed), MS, PhD, and FACSM and is a professor in the School of Health Sciences & Social Work at Griffith University.

Dr. Beck serves on the Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee of Healthy Bones Australia (formerly Osteoporosis Australia) and the Healthy Bones Australia National Consumer Advisory Committee.
Discover how Onero™ can improve your quality of life in today's informative episode of the Happy Bones, Happy Life podcast!

Tue, 16 Apr 2024 - 50min - 245 - Innovative Hip Protection Solutions to Prevent Osteoporosis Hip Fractures With Natasha Williams
Do you lead an active lifestyle and engage in high-risk activities? Are you caring for someone at high risk for falls and fractures and needing protection from fall-related hip fractures?
With falls becoming more likely and the risk of injury increasing, it would be wise for people, especially the elderly and frequent fallers, to use hip protectors. These devices are worn over the hips in underwear designed to hold them to lessen the risk of breaking a hip should the wearer fall. But is a hip protector really effective? Why are only a few people using it?
Today, Natasha Williams returns to introduce her latest version of the hip protector, which is used to prevent hip fractures. She shares some statistics and compares the original version of the product with the new version, which uses the latest technology in impact protection.
Natasha is the Founder and CEO of Phoenix Hipware. In 2011, Natasha launched a new hip protector, working with a US sports company to develop a soft and flexible shield. In those early years, hip protection was a reasonably new concept. This new product soon became the market leader in New Zealand and quickly became the preferred hip protector offering for a number of leading senior care communities across the US.
With a consistent focus on product improvement and feedback from customers in New Zealand, the US, and other international markets, it became clear that it was time to review the current hip protector and find ways to create something even better.
Partnering with ImpctLAB, a New York-based team on a mission to create the best impact protection products, has enabled Natasha to develop the best hip protector yet.
If you want to provide your loved ones and yourself protection from falls and fractures, listen to this fantastic episode of the Happy Bones, Happy Life podcast!
“Falls and fractures are not an inevitable part of growing old. They are preventable. Both the fall and the injury can be prevented, and you can live a strong, vibrant life without the devastating effects. You don't have to be one of the statistics.” - Natasha Williams
In this episode:
- [02:34] - Effects of fractures in women with Osteoporosis and other risk factors
- [06:58] - Natasha's innovative hip fracture prevention product
- [15:11] - Why aren't many people using hip protectors?

Osteoporosis is a silent disease, meaning it often has no symptoms. People only get tested after they've had a fall and broken some bones.

Wed, 06 Mar 2024 - 39min - 239 - Inflammation Is a Root Cause of Osteoporosis With Dr. Tom O’Bryan
Are you diagnosed with Osteoporosis and have no idea how it happened? It’s important to identify the root causes of Osteoporosis, which can be different for each person. But, there are some common factors, one of which is inflammation.
Now, we know that inflammation in itself is not a bad thing. However, a majority of all chronic diseases are linked to excessive or chronic inflammation, and Osteoporosis is no different.
Today, Dr. Tom O'Bryan and I talk about the effect of inflammation on our health and how different inflammatory drivers, such as food, bugs, toxins, and our lifestyle, could affect our bone health.
Dr. O'Bryan is considered the Sherlock Holmes for chronic disease. He teaches that recognizing and addressing the underlying mechanisms that activate an immune response is the map to the highway toward better health. He holds teaching faculty positions with the Institute for Functional Medicine and the National University of Health Sciences.
He has trained and certified tens of thousands of practitioners worldwide in an advanced understanding of the impact of wheat sensitivity and the development of individual autoimmune diseases.
This is such an exciting and informative conversation, so make sure you catch today's episode of the Happy Bones, Happy Life podcast!

Tue, 16 Jan 2024 - 17min - 232 - Avoid These Ingredients If You Have Osteoporosis With Mira Dessy
During childhood and early adulthood, our bones develop their strength, but as we age, our bones lose calcium, causing bone thinning. A solution to that issue is embracing a bone-friendly diet and lifestyle to strengthen our bones or minimize age-related bone loss.
However, the best diet to prevent osteoporosis is not just eating calcium-rich foods. It’s also about avoiding certain foods and ingredients that can impact your bone health when consumed in large quantities.
You might find it surprising that some ingredients you thought were good for you are harming your bones and overall health. And that's what I'm here to discuss with my guest, Mira Dessy, better known as The Ingredient Guru.
A holistic nutrition professional, author, and popular public speaker, Mira knows that it's not just what you eat but what's in what you eat. We also know you can't just give up dark chocolate or coffee and other food additives, so we're providing you with healthy options so you can start gradually making healthy swaps to what's on your kitchen table.
Are you curious about what ingredients to watch out for? Let's jump into another informative episode of the Happy Bones, Happy Life podcast!

Tue, 09 Jan 2024 - 49min - 231 - Osteoporosis Treatment 101 With Craig and Margie Bissinger
Osteoporosis is a common chronic disease, especially for people aged 50 and up. It is a silent disease, meaning it often has no symptoms.
If you have osteoporosis, you are more likely to fracture or break a bone if you fall over. Everyone’s bones become weaker as they age, but this process happens too quickly in some people.
Women often rapidly lose bone after the onset of menopause. So, what can you do to protect your bones and prevent osteoporosis?
In this special episode, I get interviewed by my husband, Dr. Craig Bissinger, about the exciting and new information I learned from over 50 health experts featured in the upcoming Natural Approaches to Osteoporosis and Bone Health Summit on January 15-21, 2024.

Tue, 26 Dec 2023 - 53min - 229 - Onero Osteoporosis Strength Training with Dr. Claudia Tamas
We want to be safe when exercising. That's very, very important. Nobody wants a fracture. But because of that, we've taken it too far. And we need an opportunity to improve our bone density through a safe strength training program.
Onero™ is a program that offers exactly this.
In this episode, I interviewed Dr. Claudia Tamas, a physical therapist and director of women's health at Natural Medicine and Rehabilitation in New Jersey.
Dr. Tamas has implemented the Onero™ program at her clinic - a strength training method developed in Australia based on over a decade of research showing its benefits for bone health.
I was fascinated to learn how Claudia safely trains her patients using this high-intensity progressive resistance approach. She sees fantastic results like increased bone density scores and stories of improved strength from her participants.
We also heard from Pat, a physical therapist who graduated from the Onero™ program. She shared how she gained new strength levels even with her fitness background. I can't wait to start the program myself in January!
I hope you find this conversation as informative and inspiring as I did. See you at the next episode!

Tue, 05 Dec 2023 - 51min - 226 - Navigating Your Osteoporosis Treatment Plan With Irma Jennings, INHC
Navigating the treatment for osteoporosis can be overwhelming. You may get this diagnosis after your doctor has ordered some blood work. After seeing the results, they recommend calcium, vitamin D, and exercise.
But this is not enough. Focusing mainly on medications, supplements, and general exercise advice without further exploring other factors or options is insufficient.
Today's guest, Irma Jennings, shows us how having the right support makes all the difference. Irma is an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and osteoporosis patient navigator.
With over 13 years of specialized experience in bone health, she offers various programs to guide clients through testing, appointments, and developing the right treatment plan. Irma is helping patients feel empowered and in control of their care.
As for tips to get the most from your doctor appointments, Irma stresses coming prepared. And while it's good to ask questions, try not to put doctors on the defensive. Finding the right balance and team is critical to overcoming any confusion.
I hope you find this interview as insightful as I did. As always, take care of yourself, and keep taking steps for strong, healthy bones!
“I recently was in osteoporosis or worked in the capacity as a navigator or advocate. And the doctor looked at her file and said, ‘Why aren't you on drugs?’ That was right after ‘Hello’. And I was like, ‘Uh-oh, this is not going to be good.” - Irma Jennings, INHC

Tue, 28 Nov 2023 - 37min - 225 - Discover How Gratitude Boosts Health and Happiness With Margie and Craig Bissinger
Gratitude has always been a powerful practice for me, elevating my own mood and outlook every time I felt appreciation.
But what's so fascinating is that science has thoroughly studied gratitude, and the data shows how significantly it can impact health and well-being.
Extensive research has validated what I intuitively knew and now provides concrete proof of just how effective "good medicine" an attitude of gratitude can be.
In this Thanksgiving episode, I spoke with my husband, Dr. Craig Bissinger, about the health benefits of gratitude.
Dr. Craig Bissinger is an OB/GYN in Parsippany, New Jersey. Together, we discuss research showing that simple gratitude practices can significantly boost mood, and reduce stress and depression.
Today, you will learn specific practices for cultivating an "attitude of gratitude." These practices are simple, effective, and nearly free, yet they provide incredible value.
If you want to enhance your health, mood, and relationships, start infusing your life with gratitude through some of the impactful (yet simple practices) discussed in this episode. Happy Thanksgiving, and thank you for listening!
“In the attitude of gratitude, stress just can't survive. That's the beauty of this. It's the antidote to stress. And, you know, we live in [an] extremely stressful society. So the more gratitude we can incorporate, the better.” - Margie Bissinger, MS, PT, CHC

Tue, 21 Nov 2023 - 26min - 224 - Calm Your Body and Strengthen Your Bones with Chantal Donnelly, PT
We all know that stress has negative effects on our bones and overall health. And we usually try to reduce it using mental strategies such as positive visualization.
But, actually, reducing stress through physical techniques is a more helpful and practical approach.
Today, you’ll learn some techniques from our guest, Chantal Donnelly, a physical therapist and author who will teach you how to reduce your muscle tension and, consequently, your stress levels.
Chantal explains how chronic stress increases cortisol levels, which can negatively impact bone density over time. She discusses emerging research suggesting bones may even play a role in regulating stress responses in the body.
We discuss how forward head posture, slouching, and chest breathing from stress can strain the neck muscles and compress the ribcage, making it difficult to breathe deeply.
Chronic muscle tension is linked to increased stress levels and risk of neck pain. But you’ll learn to reduce that tension in only 30 seconds daily.
Listen in to learn easy ways to soothe stress-induced muscle tension and naturally relax your way to stronger, healthier bones!
“If you have a home alarm system, and a squirrel runs across your roof, and that sets off the alarm, and the fire department shows up, you’ve got a problem with your alarm system, not with a fire. And that’s a lot like what chronic pain and chronic stress, both, are.” - Chantal Donnelly
