- 56 - State of Media 2024: Film Distribution, Sports Rights and Labor Negotiations
In this episode of the Media Clips Podcast, GHJ Entertainment Practice Leader Ilan Haimoff checks in with Dr. Jeffrey Cole, Director of USC Annenberg's Center for the Digital Future. Jeffrey shared his insights from CinemaCon, an annual event where cinema owners and industry professionals gather to explore shifting paradigms in film distribution and audience engagement. He notes that the box office recovered after the pandemic but has not yet reached 2019 levels, and he does not expect that level to return considering the slowdown in production during the 2023 strikes. Jeffrey also pointed to a few examples from 2023 that may shape the future of film distribution: • A major topic of discussion was theatrical windows, which have shortened significantly as more films are sent to streaming sooner. • Sound of Freedom was a surprise hit that was partially propelled to success by a pay-it-forward model. • AMC CEO Adam Aron took an innovative (and potentially controversial) approach to distribution when he bypassed the studios to directly bring Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé to theaters. Adam cited these films as solely driving the company’s growth in Q4 2023. Ilan and Jeffrey also talk about sports broadcasting, which has the potential to shape the television landscape as streamers like Amazon invest in live sports, and lessons learned from the 2023 strikes as a new round of labor negotiations take place.

On this episode of the Media Clips Podcast, host and GHJ Profit Participation Services Practice Leader Ilan Haimoff is joined by Motion Picture Television Fund (MPTF) President and CEO Bob Beitcher to discuss how the entertainment community is supporting each other through labor disputes. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and SAG-AFTRA are currently on strike, which has put a stop to many film and television productions. MPTF is a nonprofit that has supported working and retired members of the entertainment community since 1921 with temporary financial assistance, case management and residential living. Going beyond financial assistance, MPTF meets with industry members in need, teaches them how to manage their finances and provides housing. Four months into these labor disputes, many crew members are losing health coverage, facing food insecurity and struggling to pay their bills as a result of work stoppages. Since the beginning of the strikes in May, MPTF has issued nearly $2 million in grant funding to industry members in need in the form of $1,500 grants. “The average rent in Los Angeles is $3,000 a month. If you think of a $1,500 grant, it is not going to solve a lot but it may keep people in their homes for a little while longer,” Beitcher explains on the podcast. Ilan and Bob discuss the implications of the labor dispute, why these challenges will continue even after an agreement is reached and how the entertainment industry can come together to support those most affected.

Two years ago, Randy and Chris appeared on the Media Clips podcast to discuss the legal and financing challenges faced amid COVID-19. In this episode, they revisit those challenges and discuss how the landscape has changed. Randy notes that the entertainment industry was traditionally considered countercyclical — even when the economy struggled, many consumers would opt for a more affordable form of entertainment, such as a trip to the movies. But this changed during the Great Recession, when advertising-dependent media companies saw their revenue plummet. As a new recession approaches, Randy and Chris note that many financing sources are waiting to see how the market reacts. Ultimately, Chris notes, A-level studios will continue to find co-financing partners as needed. But market conditions may affect the way deals are made in the future.

In this episode of the Media Clips Podcast, GHJ Entertainment Practice Leader Ilan Haimoff checks in with Dr. Jeff Cole, USC Professor and Director of USC Annenberg’s Center for the Digital Future. In a Media Clips videocast in 2021, Ilan and Jeff discussed the streaming wars, the growing popularity of television and the uncertain future for movie theaters. In that time, the studios have continued to experiment with new release models. Now, a year later, Jeff says that one conclusion is clear: the movie theaters won. “Studios experimented with selling films directly to video, putting them on their streaming services as part of a subscription, putting them on their streaming services with supplemental fees and — ultimately, the holy grail with [films] like Black Widow — being able to put them on Disney Plus with a fee and the movie theatre at the same time,” Jeff explained on the podcast. “Theater owners were terrified because they were afraid theaters wouldn’t do as well and there would be a permanent shift toward home. That didn’t happen. When you look at the release patterns, people wanted to go to the movies when they felt safe.” Ilan and Jeff also discuss the growing competition between streamers, the trending content that has defined the COVID era and what is coming next in the entertainment landscape.

Thu, 28 Apr 2022 - 16min - 31 - How Production Companies Look at Financing

In this role, James is responsible for film-related deal analysis, greenlight modeling and performance results review for Participant, which has produced, financed or co-produced over 100 films, including two Best Picture winners. Unlike most production companies, however, Participant exclusively produces and finances social impact entertainment. In addition to fiscal performance, the company measures a second bottom line to measure positive social impact. James explains how risk is assessed when production companies consider a deal and how producing documentaries changed the way he looks at greenlight modeling. He also shares the challenge of predicting success for an unpredictable audience. This is something Participant saw firsthand when its 2011 film Contagion resurged in popularity in 2020 as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “There’s no greenlight model that anybody in the world could have done that said in year nine you’re going to have this incredibly huge spike in your revenue or attention,” James explained. “It’s a great reminder of how limited our tools are in trying to predict the future.”
