After 65-year-old Attracta Harron attended morning Mass on December 11, 2003, as part of a 30-day Novena prayer sequence, she headed home on foot, in line with her fitness regime, but never arrived. When 18-year-old Barry Wallace attended his work's Christmas party in December 1999, he planned on letting his hair down after booking the full weekend off. As the party drew to a close, Barry planned on heading to another party nearby but was confronted by someone who'd had a murder conviction overturned a decade earlier. When 26-year-old Karena Bigg-Wither offered 19-year-old Ian Haywood a place to stay one evening at her parents' luxury 17th-century cottage when they were out of the country, she did so out of the kindness of her heart. I welcome author Emma Flint to the show in this interview episode to discuss her second novel, 'Other Women'. In this episode, I tell the story of Michael Beckwith, a 44-year-old man killed in Harwich, Essex, in July 2016. Michael was asked to meet up with 21-year-old Rebecca Ryan on July 31 to discuss their relationship, which had ended just a few days earlier. Unbeknownst to Michael, it was nothing more than a ploy to lure him down a secluded lane, where he was met by 27-year-old Scott Swift and 17-year-old Joseph Smith and beaten with metal poles. Michael miraculously survived the attack but sadly died in hospital two days later. Ryan and Swift received life sentences for murder in April 2017, with Smith receiving a 12-year sentence after being found guilty of manslaughter for his role in the attack. In this episode, I tell the story of Mary McLaughlin, a 58-year-old woman killed in Partick, Glasgow, in September 1984. Mary was last seen in the company of a stranger, a man, on September 26, 1984, after spending the evening in a pub with her friends. Six days later, her body was found in her home on Laurel Street by Martin Cullen, one of her 11 children, and his then-partner. Somebody had strangled Mary with the cord of her dressing gown. Thirty-five years would pass before Police Scotland arrested serial sex offender Graham McGill after advances in DNA technology placed him in Mary's flat at the time of her murder. Judge Lord Burns handed McGill a life sentence with a minimum term of 14 years in May 2021, almost four decades after Mary's murder. In this episode, I tell the story of Ermatati Rodgers, a 41-year-old woman killed in Gwersyllt, Wrexham, in April 2008. Tati (as she was known) arrived in the UK from her native Indonesia in 1996 with her then-husband. On January 4, 2008, she unexpectedly disappeared, with her best friend raising the alarm the next day after she failed to meet her for lunch as planned. It took 14 months, but forensic teams finally found her remains in March 2009. A post-mortem quickly established that a third party had likely caused her death. Within a week of her body being found, Polish national Lukasz Reszpondek confessed that it was he who'd buried Tati; however, he denied murdering her. Mr Justice Lloyd Jones handed Reszpondek a life sentence with a minimum term of 18 years in November 2009 after he was found guilty of Tati's murder by way of a majority verdict. In this episode, I tell the story of Joshua Hall, a 17-year-old boy killed in Cam, Gloucestershire, in April 2021. Joshua had agreed to meet fellow teenager, 15-year-old Harley Demmon, at Cam Sports Club to "sort out their differences". Expecting nothing more than some harsh words to be exchanged, perhaps with the worst-case scenario being a fistfight, Joshua was stabbed and killed by Demmon within two minutes of his arrival. Demmon was found guilty of Joshua's murder at Gloucester Crown Court in November 2021. Mr Justice Chamberlain handed him a life sentence in February 2022 with a minimum term of 14 years. In this episode, I tell the story of Juliet Callaghan, a 12-year-old girl killed in Swinton, Greater Manchester, in March 1966. Juliet was attacked and killed by a 16-year-old boy called Gordon Wheeler while walking home from school one Friday afternoon. It took just ten days for the police to catch the teenage killer who had stabbed Juliet over 50 times during the frenzied attack. Wheeler was found guilty of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility in July 1966. Mr Justice Cusack ordered him to be detained at Broadmoor Hospital indefinitely. In this episode, I tell the story of Claire Morris, a 32-year-old woman killed near Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, in May 1994. Claire was killed by her husband, Malcolm Webster, just eight months after they tied the knot. She was unknowingly drugged throughout their marriage, and, at first, it was thought that Claire's death was a tragic car accident. Webster wasn't brought to justice until 2011 when he was handed a life sentence with a 30-year minimum, but killing Claire wasn't the only thing he was guilty of. This extremely convoluted story also includes Webster's attempted murder of his second wife, Felicity Drumm, in New Zealand, his fraudulent acquisition of insurance money in the aftermath of Claire's death and another fraudulent scheme involving a third woman, Simone Banarjee. In this episode, I tell the story of Paul Norfolk, a 77-year-old man killed in Haverhill, Suffolk, in December 2011. Paul lived in his semi-detached home with his wife, Esme, and her carer, 49-year-old Thailand native Bunthawee Rimmer, until Esme was moved to a residential home when her health drastically deteriorated after suffering a stroke. Rimmer claimed she then began a sexual relationship with Paul, which ultimately led to him signing over his house and entire estate, worth around £340,000, to her in late 2011. In the early hours of December 30, Rimmer murdered Paul by striking him in the head twelve times with a claw hammer. She then attempted to end her own life but was arrested and taken to a hospital in Cambridge to be treated for her injuries. A jury at Ipswich Crown Court found her guilty of murder by way of a majority verdict in July 2012, and she was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 11 years. In this episode, I tell the story of Rachael Lean, an 18-year-old killed near Buxton, Norfolk, in September 1995. Rachael's sudden disappearance on September 5, after missing a dinner appointment with her mum, prompted a five-day search. Last seen that afternoon chatting with Maria Hnatiuk outside the Naafi shop at RAF Coltishall, where her father worked, Rachael's body was eventually discovered on September 10, not far from the RAF station. Following Hnatiuk's arrest and questioning, she confessed to the crime, attributing it to diminished responsibility and placing the blame on her controlling boyfriend, Ian Wells. On November 28, 1996, Hnatiuk received a life sentence after being unanimously found guilty of murder by the jury at Norwich Crown Court. I welcome Nicky Perfect to the show in this interview episode to discuss her incredible career as a hostage and crisis negotiator. Nicky is an internationally renowned expert trainer, specialising in communication, negotiation and influencing skills. She has taught professionals worldwide how to maximise their ability to improve relationships through communication. After spending 20 years in the Metropolitan Police, she became a hostage and crisis negotiator after completing an incredibly intensive two-week course in December 2008. In 2012, Nicky joined an elite team focusing on hostage and crisis negotiations, collaborating with the government, and in 2013 became the Director of UK Hostage and Crisis Negotiation Training. Retiring from the police in 2018, Nicky has transformed a local garage into a community hub with a coffee shop, gym, and communication/negotiation coaching. For her meritorious service to the community during Covid, Nicky received a British Empire Medal (BEM) in 2022. Earlier this year, Nicky released a memoir about her time as a hostage and crisis negotiator in the Metropolitan Police. In a departure from my usual coverage of British murder cases, I bring you an off-season collaboration episode that delves into a mysterious and highly debated case from the Republic of Panama, Central America. Mark and Bethan join me from the excellent Seeing Red true crime podcast, with Mark telling us the story of Dutch students Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon, who disappeared on April 1, 2014, whilst hiking the El Pianista Trail in the country's mountain town of Boquete. Two months later, the remains of whom most people accept belonged to the two women were found, including a pelvic bone and a foot still inside a boot. Lisanne's appeared to have decomposed naturally, but strangely, Kris' bones were stark white, as if they had been bleached. Their causes of death have never been determined. A backpack recovered by a local contained a camera with 90 photos taken on April 8 between 1 am and 4 am. Most of the images are of near-complete darkness. However, some slightly clearer ones, including one showing the back of what's believed to be Kris's head, have led to debates over who took them and what happened to the two women. In this episode, I tell the story of Georgia Williams, a 17-year-old girl killed in Wellington, Shropshire, on May 26, 2013. Georgia left her parents' home that Sunday evening shortly before 8 pm to take part in what she thought was a photoshoot with 22-year-old Jamie Reynolds, someone she knew through her older sister, Scarlett. After failing to return home, Georgia's parents, Steve and Lynnette, raised the alarm two days later after realising she was not with her friends, which led to a nationwide hunt for their youngest daughter. Her body was discovered on May 31, some 50 miles away from her home in woodland near the Nant-y-Garth pass in Denbighshire, North East Wales. Reynolds, who was known to the police and mental health agencies, had lured Georgia to his parents' home and killed her during a faux photo shoot. He was later assessed by a psychiatrist who said he would potentially have gone on to become a serial killer had he not been caught. He pleaded guilty to murdering Georgia on the first day of his trial at Stafford Crown Court, with Judge Mr Justice Wilkie subsequently handing him a whole life order. On May 25, 2023, Mardle Books released 'Our Georgia: The devastating murder of my daughter by a killer who should have been stopped.' The book was written by Georgia's mum, Lynnette, with journalist Robin Eveleigh and the help and support of Steve and Scarlett. In this episode, I tell the story of Catherine Kelly, a 71-year-old woman killed in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, on February 11, 2017. Catherine had spent that Saturday evening attending a 21st birthday party with her 41-year-old son William Kelly and his partner Eleanor Banks. Within minutes of the three arriving back home, a fire broke out, which resulted in Catherine's death. It was soon revealed that Kelly had deliberately set the fire with the intention of killing his mum after first beating her up. A jury at Glasgow High Court found Kelly guilty of murder in November 2017. Judge Lady Stacey handed him a life sentence with a minimum term of 23 years. The book tells the story of the law's enactment and its penalties from Henry VII to Elizabeth I. It's arranged in alphabetical order of crimes and recounts tales of blackmail, infanticide, kidnapping, heresy, and sumptuary laws. Researched meticulously and told with occasional low-key humour, the book tells stories such as that of John Daniell and how he tried to blackmail the Earl of Essex; the Stafford insurrection of 1486, the first serious opposition to the new king; the activities of conman extraordinaire, Gregory Wisdom, and many more. The book also includes Tavern Talk (snippets of quirky information). April was born in the historic county of Lincolnshire and caught the history bug from a young age. She has always been fascinated by the physical manifestation of past events, particularly the Tudor period. That interest deepened when she discovered one of the most important events of Henry VIII's reign, the Lincolnshire Rebellion that led to the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536, which started eight miles from where April was born. In this episode, I tell the story of Louise Sellars, a 15-year-old girl killed in Appley Bridge, Greater Manchester, on August 13, 1995. That Sunday evening, Louise left her home to meet her friend Kelly Morrisey and spent a few hours with her before the two parted ways. The last time Louise was seen was at around 9:30 pm. Her parents called the police after Louise failed to return home without letting them know where she was. A massive search was conducted in the hopes of finding her alive, but sadly, her body was found the following morning by a dog walker. It would take five years before Louise's killer was brought to justice, thanks to advances in DNA technology. Ultimately, it was a discarded cigarette butt that led to the arrest and subsequent conviction of Darren Ashurst, who was 21 years old when he killed Louise. A jury at Manchester Crown Court found Ashurst guilty of murder on November 1, 2000, with Mrs Justice Rafferty handing him a life sentence. He served 20 years in total and was released from prison in 2020. In this episode, I tell the story of Teddy Tilston, a 2-year-old boy killed in Birkenhead, Merseyside, on March 1, 2017. Teddy was being cared for by 28-year-old Craig Smith, his mum's partner, when the emergency services were called that afternoon. Smith claimed Teddy had drowned in the bath after being left for just 30 seconds, but the paramedics attending the scene noticed that he was bone dry. Teddy's twin sister, Cassidy, was already at Arrowe Park Hospital after Smith informed their mum, Ashleigh Willett, that she'd knocked herself unconscious after running into a table. When examined, it was revealed Cassidy had several other injuries, including a broken wrist she may have received up to six months earlier. A jury at Liverpool Crown Court found Smith guilty of murder in November 2017, and he was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 17 years. In this episode, I tell the story of Kenneth Syme, a 48-year-old man killed in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, on January 1, 1995. Kenneth attended a Hogmanay party at a tenement in Faifley, close to his home, and was later thrown out of a third-floor window by Kenneth McGuire over an alleged debt he was owed. Somehow, Kenneth Syme survived that fall and was brought back up to the flat, where he was promptly thrown out of the same window once more by McGuire, killing him. Three men were initially charged with murder, but one of the accused turned on the others and became a key witness for the prosecution. McGuire received a life sentence in April 1995 with a minimum term of 15 years for Kenneth's murder, with Michael Fay receiving a nine-year sentence for attempted murder. In this episode, I tell the story of Fred Barras, a 16-year-old boy killed in Emneth Hungate, Norfolk, on August 20, 1999. Fred and his friend, 29-year-old Brendon Fearon, were burgling the isolated farmhouse Bleak House when its owner, 54-year-old farmer Tony Martin, caught them in the act and unloaded his shotgun at them. Both men were hit, but only Fred died due to his injuries. Tony was handed a life sentence in April 2000 after being found guilty of murder. His conviction was later reduced to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility in October 2001 after a successful appeal. Receiving a retrospective five-year prison sentence, Tony served just over three and was released in August 2003. In this episode, I tell the story of Joanne Nelson, a 22-year-old woman murdered in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, in February 2005. Joanne and her fiancée, Paul Dyson, lived together in Hotham Road North, Hull, but Dyson had a dark secret that Joanne was oblivious to. Not only did Dyson have previous criminal convictions, including the assault of his ex-wife on their wedding night, but he also idolised his dad, Peter Dyson, who had a murder conviction against his name. On or around Valentine's Day in 2005, Dyson strangled Joanne to death with his bare hands after arguing about household chores. He then drove 45 miles north to the village of Brandsby, where he dumped her body. Reporting Joanne as missing and even taking part in a TV appeal, which included a display of "crocodile tears", Dyson was eventually caught and pleaded guilty to her murder on the first day of his trial in November 2005. In this episode, I tell the story of Nicole Lewis, a 24-year-old mother-of-two murdered in Tuebrook, Merseyside, on March 5, 2002. Nicole and her fiancée, Mark Wilkinson, separated in February 2002 after a domestic incident the previous month. Mark had violently shaken Nicole so roughly after an argument that she had marks around her neck. A month after moving out, Nicole was invited to the couple's home after Wilkinson said he had arranged for a relationship counsellor to visit and talk to them about their problems. That was nothing more than a ruse. After heading upstairs with Wilkinson, Nicole was strangled to death and placed inside a wardrobe in the front bedroom. In this episode, I tell the story of Gillian Atkins, a 14-year-old girl murdered in Deeping St James, Lincolnshire, on April 14, 1983. Gillian popped out to buy a packet of crisps that evening and was last seen standing alone on a bridge in the middle of the village between roughly 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm. She never came home, leading to a frantic search by her family and dozens of police officers, which sadly ended the following day when her body was discovered in a neighbour's back garden. Robert France was the person responsible for sexually assaulting and killing Gillian. He was arrested on suspicion of murder two weeks after her body was discovered. France received a life sentence in November 1983 and served 27 years before being released in April 2010. He was subsequently sent back to jail for five years in March 2011 after burgling a house in Peterborough in October 2010, just six months after being released. In this episode, I tell the story of Kelly Hyde, a 24-year-old woman murdered in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, on September 27, 2007. Kelly dropped her car off at a local garage that morning as its MOT test was booked. As she walked home with her dog Scrappy, she was followed by a 16-year-old boy as she walked on a bridle path. Adrian Jones did not know Kelly, and to date, no motive has been established for what he did, but that morning, he beat Kelly to death using a piece of gym equipment. He was arrested just days after Kelly's body was discovered on September 30 in a stream near a disused colliery. Seeing as a minimum of 12 years imprisonment was where the Judge had to begin, Mr Justice Davis handed Jones an 11-year and 79-day sentence, given that Jones had already spent 286 days in custody. Jones attempted to appeal his murder conviction, but the Court of Appeal rejected it in October 2009. After Jones died of natural causes on February 18, 2018, his appeal continued, with his family pursuing the case and referring it to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), who referred it to the Court of Appeal. In this end-of-season special, I tell the stories of Terri Harris, John and Lacey Bennett and Connie Gent, who were murdered in Killamarsh, Derbyshire, on September 18, 2021. Terri and her two children, John and Lacey, lived in a property at Chandos Crescent, Killamarsh, with Damien Bendall, a man whom Terri had met on an online dating app after separating from Jason Bennett, John and Lacey's dad. Many mistakes and missed opportunities were made regarding Bendall's risk status to those he knew and children by the probation service. Hence, I've posed the question in this episode's title as to whether this was an avoidable tragedy. On September 18, Connie stayed at the Killamarsh house to spend time with her best friend, Lacey. Between the late hours of that evening and the early hours of the following day, all four were killed by Bendall, whose arrest later that day was caught on police bodycam footage. In this episode, I tell the story of Avril Dunn, a 26-year-old woman murdered in Luton, Bedfordshire, on September 14, 1985. Avril went to The Heron, a local pub, that Saturday evening and was seen playing darts with some of the other regulars. Leaving at around 10.30 pm, Avril is thought to have been seen in the company of a tall, fair-haired man who drove away from the pub in a light-coloured Opel Manta. Her body was found at 7:30 am the following day. Still, her killer wouldn't be caught until thirteen years later when advances in DNA technology allowed scientists to match samples recovered from Avril's clothes to one of their key suspects at the time of her murder. Duncan Jackson, a father of four, was found guilty of Avril's murder in January 2000 and received a life sentence with a minimum term of 15 years. In this episode, I tell the story of George Russell, a 35-year-old Police Constable murdered in Oxenholme, Cumbria, on February 10, 1965. George and several other Cumberland and Westmorland Constabulary officers attempted to hunt down an armed car thief and tracked him down to the waiting room at Oxenholme Lake District Railway Station. The gunman shot his revolver at George, killing him, as well as Inspector Alfred Harrison and PC Alexander Archibald, both of whom sustained injuries but were not killed. A few hours later, the gunman was finally apprehended by PC Geoffrey Harrington and PC Derek Thompson. Later revealed to be a labourer called John Middleton, the gunman had attempted to take his own life with the revolver but failed. The bullet was later removed from his head, leaving him with permanent brain damage. Middleton was deemed unfit to stand trial in June 1965 and was ordered by Mr Justice Brabin to be admitted to a secure hospital at the discretion of the Home Secretary. In this episode, I tell the story of Ricky Wyatt, a 34-year-old father-of-one who was murdered in Laindon, Essex, on September 1, 2006. Ricky was confronted by 32-year-old Kathryn Taylor and 29-year-old Matthew Boulton in a car park on Little Lullaway before being stabbed by the former. The encounter was rumoured to have occurred over a £5 drug debt, but Judge Clegg dismissed that claim at Basildon Crown Court. Regardless, the jury found Taylor guilty of Ricky's murder, and she was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 16 years. On February 22, Alan was left home alone when his dad, Bob, left for his night shift, and his mum, Margaret, headed to the pub with her friend and secret lover. A few hours later, Alan was brutally murdered in his home, and his body was only discovered after Margaret sent her friend Eileen's son, Leslie, to her house to check on him. Margaret claimed to have headed straight for Eileen's house after returning from the pub, but she is suspected of having killed her son first and signed a confession stating as much before she quickly withdrew it. Add to that several witness testimonies indicating there was another male in the house with Alan whilst his mum was at the pub, which takes the complexity of this mystery to another level. Still, Margaret was found guilty of murdering Alan and handed a life sentence on July 26. She served ten years (incorrectly stated as being thirteen in the episode) before being released in 1989 and subsequently passed away in February 2001 after succumbing to throat cancer. The case aired on an episode of Rough Justice in October 1983, and many, including Margaret's other son, Derek, believe she is innocent. Sadly, it looks like the truth will now never be known. In this episode, I discuss the tragic story of Janet Commins, a 15-year-old schoolgirl who was sexually assaulted and killed in 1976. Janet had planned to meet her friends at the local swimming baths on January 7, but her mum, Eileen, did not permit her to go as she looked pale and unwell. Sneaking out and leaving a note behind, Janet was never seen alive by her parents again. This case features a massive miscarriage of justice, with the first murder trial occurring in June 1976. 18-year-old Noel Jones was accused of murdering Janet and, bizarrely, admitted manslaughter even though he was innocent and was handed a 12-year prison sentence, serving six. Forty years later, 57-year-old Stephen Hough was arrested on an unrelated matter and had his DNA taken. It matched DNA found on samples taken from Janet's body. Like Noel, Hough was found guilty of manslaughter in July 2017 and handed a 12-year sentence. In this episode, I discuss the story of Jane Longhurst, a 31-year-old music teacher murdered by her best friend's partner. This chilling story of obsession, murder and justice began on March 14, 2003, when Graham Coutts killed Jane in his Hove flat. Coutts had been obsessed with physically harming women during sex since the age of 15 and fantasised about murdering someone in such a manner. He was initially handed a life sentence in February 2004 at Lewes Crown Court, but his charge was later quashed. A re-trial in 2007 ended with the same outcome, with Coutts being handed a life sentence at the Old Bailey that July with a minimum term of 26 years. In this episode, I embark on a haunting journey into the tragic murder of Bella Nicandro, a 76-year-old woman whose life was brutally cut short in her shared apartment building in Notting Hill, London. Aaron Cook, Bella's 23-year-old neighbour, was responsible, and it was concluded that he was in the midst of a psychotic episode when he stabbed her to death on August 14, 2021. He had previously been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2020 and had recently stopped taking his medication before the attack. In this episode, I delve into the story of Debbie Griggs, a pregnant mother-of-three who disappeared from her home without a trace in May 1999. Two decades later, her husband, Andrew, was arrested in connection with her murder, despite no body being found, and was ultimately handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 20 years. In a departure from my usual coverage of British murder cases, I bring you an off-season episode that delves into a profoundly compelling story from South Africa. As told by my guest Lorraine Purdon, the case of Alison Botha is not a murder story. Instead, it's an awe-inspiring account of survival. I feel compelled to issue a severe content warning for this episode because it contains alarming and graphic elements. I have no problem admitting that I was uncomfortable hearing some aspects of the raw and brutal nature of what happened to Alison. In December 1994, Alison was abducted in the city of Gqeberha, known as Port Elizabeth at the time, and subjected to a brutal assault by two men that seemed destined to end in tragedy. In the final episode of season 10, I tell the story of Annie Gross and Jessie Mackintosh. In the early hours of December 1, 1912, 29-year-old Annie Gross shot and killed 33-year-old Jessie Mackintosh as she retired to her room after a social gathering at a boarding house in Russell Square, London. Jessie was having an affair with Annie's husband, Harry, although it's worth mentioning that the couple had separated at the time. Despite initially seeming to confess to murdering Jessie, Annie later testified that her tumultuous and abusive marriage led her to attempt to kill her husband, which is who claimed she thought she had shot that morning. Amazingly, the jury bought Annie's story and found her guilty of manslaughter, despite it being a murder trial, in mid-January 1913. Mr Justice Darling handed her a five-year prison sentence and did not pretend to agree with the jury's verdict. In this episode, I tell the story of Jason Nelson and Jordan Maguire. On May 26, 2013, 32-year-old Grenada national Jason murdered 20-year-old Jordan by stabbing him three times with a knife. Jason fled the UK and headed for Grenada before settling briefly in Trinidad. He was eventually arrested five months later after CCTV images of him from the day of the murder were released. Once extradited back to the UK, Jason was tried at Luton Crown Court and found guilty of Jordan's murder. Judge Michael Kay handed him a life sentence with a minimum term of 27 years on October 22, 2015. In this episode, I tell the story of Thomas Shanks and Vickie Fletcher. On May 7, 1998, 47-year-old former SAS soldier Thomas Shanks murdered his ex-girlfriend Vickie Fletcher whilst the 21-year-old was on a night out with her friends in Castleford, West Yorkshire. After using an AK-47 to fire multiple shots at Vickie, Thomas fled to Scotland, where he was arrested the following day. His first murder trial ended in May 1999, with the jury unable to reach a verdict. A subsequent trial occurred in early 2000, with Thomas being found guilty of murder on April 19. Mr Justice Jowitt handed him a life sentence, and he received a minimum term of 18 years in 2008 when the law changed regarding minimum tariffs. As of November 2017, Thomas Shanks is a free man, with some sources suspecting that he has returned to his native Scotland. In this episode, I tell the story of Scott and Bernadette Walker. On July 18, 2020, 17-year-old Bernadette was last seen alive leaving her grandparents' house after her dad Scott picked her up. She was reported as missing three days later by her mum, Sarah Walker. Scott was arrested on suspicion of Bernadette's murder in September 2020 despite her body not being found. He was subsequently handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 32 years in September 2021 after being found guilty of her murder. Sarah was handed a 6-year jail sentence after being found guilty of two counts of perverting the course of justice. To this day, Bernadette's body has not been found. After pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility in October 2006, Nicola was detained under the Mental Health Act 1983. In September 2009, Nicola was discharged to a housing association self-contained flat. On October 10, 2011, Nicola repeatedly spoke with emergency services personnel in an attempt to get herself sectioned. Later that day, she purchased a knife from ASDA and unsuccessfully attempted to murder 22-year-old Kerry Clark with it. She then stole a knife from a butcher's shop and stabbed and killed 58-year-old Sally Hodkin, whom Nicola had chosen to attack randomly. Judge Brian Barker handed Nicola Edgington a life sentence with a minimum term of 37 years on March 4, 2013. Len Hodkin, Sally's son, is the chairperson of the UK charity Hundred Families. In this episode, I tell the story of Albert Dryden and Harry Collinson. In 1988, Albert Dryden built a sunken bungalow on his land without planning permission. Over the next three years, he had a constant back-and-forth battle with Derwentside District Council, who demanded he demolish the bungalow. On June 20, 1991, the council, led by principal planning officer Harry Collinson, arrived at Albert's land, intent on demolishing it themselves. Confronting the councilman with a gun, Albert shot and killed Harry in an incident captured by TV news cameras. Albert received a life sentence for Harry's murder on April 1, 1992, and passed away 26 years later on September 15, 2018. He was at the forefront of ensuring the most effective use of forensic science to combat crime and develop knowledge around applying forensic science and policing tools to support the investigation of violent and acquisitive crimes. He is noted for developing and leading the national programme of cold case review – Operation Advance – and being a national and international speaker on developing DNA and other biometric databases. For his services to forensic science, Bob was awarded an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list of 2008. In this episode, I tell the story of Lewis Daynes and Breck Bednar. On the morning of February 17, 2014, 18-year-old Lewis Daynes murdered 14-year-old Breck Bednar by stabbing him in the neck. Breck met Lewis online and was lured to his flat the previous evening. Lewis Daynes was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 25 years on January 12, 2015, by Mrs Justice Cox at Chelmsford Crown Court. In this off-season episode, I'm joined by Bobbie Holmes of Killer Stories, who tells me (and you) the story of American double murderer Larry Gene Bell. Larry Gene Bell kidnapped 17-year-old Shari Smith on May 31, 1985, and murdered her shortly after. He then taunted Shari's family by making several phone calls and forcing Shari to write them a letter before she was killed. A couple of weeks later, Larry kidnapped 9-year-old Debra Helmick and murdered her in a similar fashion. Once more, he taunted Shari's family after doing so. After his arrest on June 27, 1985, Larry Gene Bell was given the death penalty. He chose the electric chair over lethal injection and was finally executed on October 4, 1996. In this episode, I tell the stories of Christopher Halliwell, Becky Godden-Edwards and Sian O'Callaghan. In March 2011, Halliwell murdered Sian after picking her up in his taxi after she left a Swindon nightclub. He was handed a life sentence with a 25-year minimum for Sian's murder in October 2012. This case is controversial because Halliwell revealed the location of another woman he'd killed, Becky Godden-Edwards, at the same time he revealed the location of Sian's body. Due to PACE being breached by DS Steve Fulcher, Becky's murder wasn't part of the October 2012 trial. Halliwell wouldn't be found guilty of Becky's murder until September 2016, after which he was handed a whole life order. I tell the story of Odessa Carey Snr and Odessa Carey Jnr in this episode. In April 2019, Odessa Jnr murdered her mum, Odessa Snr, after attacking her with a mallet. She then removed her mum's head using scissors and knives before later removing her brain. After the murder, Odessa Jnr carried her mum's decapitated head around in a plastic carrier bag and reportedly kissed it on the forehead in front of a family friend. Judge Paul Sloan handed Odessa Jnr a hospital order on March 12, 2020, after deeming her not fit enough to stand trial. I tell the story of Damian Rzeszowski and his family in this episode. On August 14, 2011, Damian and his wife Izabela returned from a couple's trip to their native Poland. Later that day, the family planned on hosting a barbecue. After being berated by Izabela for leaving the kids alone in the house whilst she went to collect her friend, Damian snapped. He grabbed two kitchen knives and, within the space of 15 minutes, murdered Izabela, Marek Gartska, his father-in-law, Kinga and Kacper, his two children, and Marta and Julia de la Haye, Izabela's friend and her daughter. Damian then turned the knife on himself but survived his self-inflicted injuries. Judge Michael Birt handed Damian six concurrent 30-year sentences on October 29, 2012, after he was found guilty of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility. I tell the story of Kenneth Bill and John Hay in this episode. On March 15, 2012, Kenneth lured John to his unit at Meltham Mills Industrial Estate on the pretence of him pricing up some building work. Once there, Kenneth beat John to death inside the unit, burned his body and disposed of the ashes at a local recycling centre. Kenneth was in love with Carol Hay, John's wife, and wanted him out of the picture so that he could pursue a relationship with her. It was in a house there that he murdered Jeff, Helen, Xing and Alice Ding. The apparent motive behind the massacre was Anxiang losing a decade-long legal battle against the Dings, his former business partners.
