In this interview Belouis (ne: Neville Keighly) talks about his fascinating journey from being a virtually ignored solo artist to recording his first album in 1985 with the likes of Carlos Alomar and Earl Slick (both from David Bowie’s band) as well as Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson from Chic. That first album would yield two international hits (“Imagination” and the title track “Some People). Belouis talks about the release of his controversial music videos and about being handpicked to support Queen on tour the following year. He also talks openly about walking away from music in 1995 and why he made an incredible comeback after 24 years! Belouis Some was to begin touring the US with The Alarm and Jay Ashton’s Gene Loved Jezebel later this month! That tour which as to include stops in Northampton and New Haven has been postponed. Cheryl's more recent Grammy Award was for Best Historical Album for the amazing 7-CD box set entitled, "Written in Their Soul: The Stax Songwriter Demos". This was a project that took Cheryl more than 17 years to compile and produce. It's a collection of nearly 150 demos that were recorded by the original songwriters for Stax Records. Many of these songs went on to become hits for Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Isaac Hayse, The Staples Singers, and many more. Many of these tracks have never been released in any form until now. And the results are absolutely brilliant. Cheryl not only talks about the box set and it's two Grammy awards (including one for best album notes), but she also talks about some of the incredible releases that are available on Omnivore Recordings. Just two years after promoting Skafish as a groundbreaking genius, IRS rejected 8 of the 11 songs on the record for being too controversial. For the last 40 years Jim Skafish has fought to regain the rights to his own music which had been largely out of print and unavailable since 1985. Jim has not only released his self-titled debut album from 1979, he has just released the entire second album–including all 8 of the songs that were rejected–which can now be heard for the very first time in the reissued entitled “The Conversation & The Rejects”.
