    FOLLOW UP: EU TO IMPOSE TARIFFS

    EU politicians have indicated that they will impose tariffs between 25-30% on Chinese EVs imported to the European Union. This comes after the US raised their tariff level to 105% for Chinese EVs. The move has been expected but the amount was not known.     FOLLOW UP: CRUISE AGREE PAYOUT TO PEDESTRIAN VICTIM

    Cruise, the self-driving development company, has agreed to pay the victim of the road incident that involved her being dragged and severely injured by the car, between $8 and $12 million as compensation. Exact details have not been confirmed. Click this Market Watch article link for more.

    FOLLOW UP: TESLA BEING SUED OVER SELF-DRIVING CLAIMS

    A US judge has stated that the class-action against Tesla, with regards to pursuing over negligence and fraud based claims. The original claim is, apparently, due to the 2016 video which the actions states falsely advertised what Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) can do.     DEATH BY DANGEROUS CYCLING TO BECOME LAW

    The UK Government has announced that “causing death or serious injury by dangerous or careless cycling is set to become an offence”, as reported by the BBC News site. This change in the law will also come with a potential punishment of up to 14 years in prison. Click this link to read more.

    FTC WARNS CAR MAKERS OVER DATA COLLECTION

    In the US the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has warned car manufacturers on their practices over collecting data on their vehicles and occupants. They explain how serious they are by citing several recent cases where they have fined companies for “the illegal collection, use, and disclosure of their personal data." Good.     MINI CEO STEPS DOWN

    Stefanie Wurst, the CEO of Mini, is stepping down and will be replaced by Stefan Richmann, head of BMW Group corporate strategy, on 1 August 2024. There have been no reasons given for this change. Click this Autocar article link for more.

    NHTSA INVESTIGATES WAYMO

    Once more in the US, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) is finally investigating Waymo about its vehicles not obeying traffic laws. The countless videos on social media showing examples of this, must have made them wake up. Waymo have tried to suggest the incidents are statistically insignificant. Zoox is also under investigation. Cruise has announced it will resume testing in Arizona with a safety driver in attendance. To read about Waymo, click this article link from The Register.

    For further context, click this link to a piece from Appercetive by Sam, which gives some insider information on how badly these vehicles and systems are actually doing. However, we would stress that we do not agree with the author’s take on how AVs will be ‘a thing’ as he does.

    More context, is an article from The Verge. Do read this as this highlights several important issues the industry has tried to gloss over or hope would go away or that no one would notice, but the public has and it has recorded it. Click here to read more.

    RENAULT ABANDONS AV CARS FOR BUSES

    Renault has announced it is not pursuing autonomous cars, for the time being, but instead will develop autonomous buses. We are not sure how they have come to the conclusion that it will be different considering they need to work in the same domains.     EU BRINGS IN STRICTER CO2 RULES FOR LORRIES

    The European Council has agreed to stricter CO2 rules for lorries, following consensus by EU countries recently. All city buses must be emission free from 2035 and nearly all new lorries will need to be by 2040. If you wish to learn more, click this link to the electrive article here.

    TEVVA APPLIES FOR ADMINISTRATORS

    Tevva Motors is a UK-based electric lorry company. They have a 7.5t model which Royal Mail and Travis Perkins have expressed interest in buying. Tevva failed to merge six months ago, with a Canadian company, and have called in administrators to give them protection whilst they seek more investment. Click this electrive link for more.

    KONECT COULD HERALD MORE EV CHARGERS AT FORECOURTS

    Konect, from Gilbarco Veeder-Root, is a turn-key EV charging solution aimed at fuel forecourts. They will handle all of the payments, maintenance and customer service for the charge points, whilst the site focuses on selling sandwiches and more, which is where the profit lies for them already.     Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio Super Sport

    Alfa Romeo is building 450 Super Sport versions of the Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio. These will all black versions, with areas either darkened or actually black to give it a unique look. Prices are £82,815 for the Giulia and £91,835 for the Stelvio. Click this EVO article link for more.

    Seat Leon

    The car company, who we thought up until recently was being quietly shuttered by the VW Group is now back and needs to update their models. Here the Leon is getting a spruce up.     Morgan Midsummer

    Morgan and Pininfarina have collaborated to bring us a roadster called the Midsummer. This made the internet go weak at the knees when revealed. What a gorgeous car.     Stellantis to launch Leapmotor vehicles in Europe

    Leapmotor, a Chinese EV maker that Stellantis recently invested heavily in, will bring a 165 mile supermini, a mid-sized SUV and a new vehicle out each year up to 2028.The supermini will be available from September in Europe and the UK.     Eight year warranties from Peugeot

    Peugeot are extending their Allure Care warranty scheme to all their EVs and with that bring an eight year/100,000 mile guarantee. Remember that all EV batteries are legally obliged to have an eight year warranty in the UK already, but Peugeot are now covering the rest of the car - although check the small print!     DESIGNERS MOOD BOARD: T. JON MAYER JOINS BENTLEY

    T. Jon Mayer is leaving Volvo, where he was the head of exterior design, to become the head of design operations at Bentley.     FOLLOW UP: CAZOO TO ENTER ADMINISTRATION

    The online car retailer has taken the step to announce that it will appoint administrators for its subsidiaries to help protect them from creditor’s debt enforcement.     FOLLOW UP: TESLA AUTOPILOT UPDATE INVESTIGATED

    The National Highways Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has written to Tesla seeking answers as to why their cars still keep crashing after the update to their driver monitoring system. Tesla has until 1 July 2024 to respond or face potential fines up to $135 million. If you wish to learn more about that, click this article link from The Register.

    That is not all the news for Tesla though, US prosecutors are investigating the company over potential securities and wire fraud, over the capabilities of its driver assistance technology. This is purely an investigation and does not show any guilt, to be clear. On top of which, any prosecution would have to show a company deliberately inflating the capabilities rather than being optimistic about the future and failing to achieve that.     FOLLOW UP: JLR OFFERS CONTRIBUTION FOR OWN INSURANCE

    As part of the continuing battle to counter the issue of high costs of or even refusal for insurance coverage JLR has now added a £150 per month contribution, if they take out their bespoke version.     FOLLOW UP: DAIHATSU RESTARTS PRODUCTION

    Daihatsu has finally restarted production in all four of its Japanese plants, following the safety test fraud scandal. Changes have been made to production, development the numbers of safety testing staff. If you want to learn more, click this article link from The Japan Times.

    APRIL 2024 NEW CAR REGISTRATION FIGURES

    New car registration figures for April 2024 has shown a 1% year on year. Fleet is doing all the lifting as Private registrations drop 17.7% year on year. BEV is up again, but only 15.7%, as petrol declines slightly and diesel drops further. Plug-in hybrid and hybrid share increases. SMMT are calling, once again, for help from the Government in a variety of ways that would encourage private buyers to purchase an electric car. Click here to read more, from the SMMT article.

    Manufacturers are becoming increasingly vocal on the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate and how unworkable it is currently. With some suggesting they will pull out of the market, throttle combustion engine sales and more. Fleet customers are also being threatened, told they must purchase a certain percentage of EV in their order. To read more on this, click here for an article from The Guardian.     JLR PROFITS THE BEST SINCE 2015

    JLR generated a revenue of £29 billion in 2023. Which has helped them reduce their debt from £3 billion to £700 million. There is still a backlog on their order books, but they are increasing production rates. If you wish to read more, click this Autocar article link.

    INSURANCE COSTS QUERIED BY CUSTOMERS

    The Guardian has an article about the cost insurance companies are charged when a vehicle is in an accident. This echoes Andrew’s experience when his car was hit and the insurers decided to charge £13,000 to hire a SUV for four weeks. Hopefully soon, a regulator will step in and start investigating if the rocketing insurance costs are justifiable or not. Click this link to read more.

    GOVERNMENT CONSULTATION FOR CLASSIC CARS

    The UK Government has launched an consultation into modernising the DVLA treatment of classic cars, their modifications and more. The rules have not been updated since the 1980s and technology has changed a lot. We’ve seen some EV conversions be rejected because of how much it modified the car, is that right?     Mandatory speed limiters for UK cars

    From 7 July 2024 cars sold in the UK must come with a number of “safety” features that the EU General Safety Regulations 2 demand. One of which is a speed limiter. The claims are it uses GPS and/or sign recognition systems to understand what speed the car can legally do. Long time listeners will have heard both the chaps discuss how bad these are at doing that.     Bentley replaces W12 engine

    Bentley is replacing the W12 engine with a V8 plug-in hybrid, offering up to 740bhp and a 50 mile electric only capability, when fully charged. If you wish to learn more, click this Autocar article link.

    JLR replaces engines

    JLR is undertaking a mid life refresh of the Defender, including trim and engines. The engines are changing to come in line with Euro 6e requirements, which means other models in their range will be altered likewise. To read more, click this Autocar article link here.

    Hyundai considering subscription for options

    Hyundai is openly talking about adding subscriptions to its offerings. Becoming aware that exponential growth of cars is not sustainable, they are looking at other ways to generate income.     VW to ditch GTX badge

    Volkswagen are going to introduce GTI and R badged versions of their electric vehicles, meaning that the GTX badge will be retired. If you wish to read more about this, click the link here to an Autocar story.

    The EU has accused BYD, Geely and SAIC of not providing enough detail for their investigation. Due to this, apparent, lack of cooperation the tariffs that will be imposed are going to be higher than they might have been.     FOLLOW UP: MORE TESLA CUTS

    Tesla is reported to be cancelling the ‘ground-breaking’ “gigacasting” plans, which were to start with an underbody made in a single metal sheet. There were many in the industry who were questioning if this could be made possible and if there were consequences to doing so, outside of manufacturing.     FRENCH CAR INDUSTRY GIVEN NEW TARGET BY GOVERNMENT

    The French car industry has reached an agreement with their Government to increase EV sales fourfold by 2027. They have also been instructed to produce two million electric and hybrid vehicles annually, by the end of the decade. If you wish to read more, click this link from Reuters.

    PARTS BEING STOLEN FROM VEHICLES

    Volkswagen owners are the latest to be hit by selective thefts of car parts, rather than the entire car, as technology, the cost of living crisis and safety regulations all drive up costs. In this instance, the radar sensors which are incorporated into the front grille badge, have been taken. This is an ongoing issue and has hit many car companies.     ELECTRIC CAR MISINFORMATION CONSEQUENCES

    An electric car owner, who was visiting the Liverpool hospital Alder Hey, was asked to park in one of the outside spaces as the multi-storey car park was having improvements made to the sprinkler system and during that time EVs were not allowed to use that specific area. This is all fine, but the reasoning was due to EVs ‘spontaneously combusting’ which is untrue but a consequence of all the misinformation posted by the media and individuals.     GOOGLE MAPS ADDING EV CHARGING INFORMATION

    Google Maps are going to add electric vehicle charging information in a new update. This will include data such as the availability, type of charger and allow for filtering of searches.     Renault Symbioz

    Renault has found a gap in their offerings and has promptly shoved a car into that niche. Missing was a Qashqai-sized model, bigger than the Captur but smaller than the Austral. Begs the question as to what is the point the Scenic, though. Relatively lightweight the claims on efficiency are high, as well as this being a practical and competitively priced vehicle that will do a job for families.     Ferrari 12Cilindri

    The replacement to the 812 Superfast has been unveiled. Appearances are that of what AI might produce if the prompt “what would a Daytona look like today” was used. Lots of power, performance and a hefty price tag. As Alan reminds us all, wait till we see proper photos or one for ourselves before slamming the looks.     TWR Supercat

    Talking of cars that might have come from an AI prompt, the TWR Supercat has been shown. A wide-bodied XJS restomod, costing £225,000 and limited to a run of just 88 examples.     FOLLOW UP: CONTINENTAL FINED $107M FOR DIESELGATE

    Continental, the automotive parts supplier, has been fined €100 million for its part in the dieselgate scandal. The fine was such due to the full cooperation of the company and changes they have subsequently made to their compliance structures. There are six weeks for Continental to pay the fine.     STELLANTIS LASHES OUT AT EV MANDATES

    Carlos Tavares criticises the current UK EV mandates as “terrible”. He has met with the Transport Secretary, Mark Harper, to discuss the situation and suggest alterations that will make it more workable for the industry. We are finding out that you cannot just manufacture demand, when reviewing the monthly SMMT registration figures. You can read more, via a Peter Campbell thread here.     LOTUS CHIEF COMMERCIAL OFFICER IS LEAVING

    Mike Johnson, who is the chief commercial officer of Lotus and the public facing executive for the brand, will be leaving the company after only 18 months in role.     RANSWOMWARE ATTACK IMPACTS STREET LIGHTS

    A ransomware attack on Leicester City Council has led street lights to “misbehave”. This should cause great concern as more and more systems are linked and accessible remotely. Hopefully, more important and safety critical systems are being looked at across the country so there is not a serious impact from such incidents.     MERCEDES EACTROS 600 CHARGES AT 1MW

    Mercedes-Benz are preparing for the Megawatt Charging System (MCS), that is due to be finalised in 2025, and have successfully charged an eActros 600 prototype at 1MW for the first time.     SAMSUNG TEASES FASTER CHARGING LONG LIFE BATTERY

    At the 37th Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exposition, in Seoul, Samsung revealed that they will start production of a new electric vehicle batteries that will charge to 80% in nine minutes and some will last 20 years. The plan is for production to start in 2026, but it being fitted to cars in 2029. That’s all a little way off, hopefully this isn’t like solid state batteries and just far enough ahead for us to forget the last date that was declared.     Vauxhall Grandland

    Vauxhall have redesigned their range topping SUV, the Grandland, making it bigger thanks to the STLA Medium platform. There will be a mild hybrid, a PHEV and full EV versions.     Mercedes-Benz G-Class electric

    Mercedes have created an electric version of the long running G-Class model. Visually it is almost identical to the recent refresh, but has been apparently redesigned to increase aero efficiency. There are four electric motors, one for each wheel, to enable it to have excellent off road ability too. Maximum estimate of range is 292 miles. No confirmation of pricing has been revealed.     Lamborghini Urus SE

    Lamborghini have electrified the Urus, with the SE being a PHEV. That equates to 800hp and a maximum estimated electric only range of 37 miles.     FOLLOW UP: WALES TO CHANGE SOME ROADS BACK TO 30MPH

    Ken Skates, the Welsh Government Transport Secretary, has announced that some of the road limits recently changed from 30mph to 20mph, will now revert back to the original limit. This is an acknowledgement that the implementation of the reduced road speeds has not been as carefully executed as should have occured.     UK GOVERNMENT RULES OUT GRANTS FOR EVS

    The UK Government has reiterated that it will not be providing incentives for private buyers seeking an EV. This follows calls from the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee’s Electric Vehicles report, which recommended several actions. Click this Autocar article link, to read more.

    BIT OF A WEEK FOR TESLA

    Tesla have decided to step up to the plate of not having the best week imaginable. Firstly, they announced the sacking of over 10% of the global workforce, as one step to deal with their declining sales. You can learn more about that, by clicking this Reuters article link here.

    Secondly, the company has quickly recalled all Cybertrucks following the news that the accelerator pedal cover can become loose and potentially cause the pedal to be jammed down. We applaud Tesla for quickly reacting to this news, though. To read more, click this article link from The Verge.

    JLR 2023 SALES UP

    Now that JLR can get its hands on parts, once again, it has increased its sales in 2023 by 22%. Much of that was from the Defender, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.     VW WORKERS IN US VOTE TO UNIONISE

    For the first time, the US car workers union, UAW, has been voted for by workers in Tennessee at a Volkswagen plant.     VW IN COURT OVER ID NAME

    A former supplier to Volkswagen, Identytec, has given up trying to reach an agreement on VW’s use of the name ‘ID’ and is taking the car company to court.     Citroën C3 Aircross

    Citroën has revealed their new C3 Aircross SUV that will come in electric and hybrid variants. Using the design language first shown to us via the Oli concept.     Vauxhall Frontera

    Talking of sharing panels, the Frontera is back for Vauxhall. This time using the ‘smart car’ platform and some panels that the C3 Aircross also uses.     Mazda CX-80

    Dacia has announced that it is now offering 7 year warranties on their cars, including used ones, as long as they meet the criteria.
