So many folks out there will overlook a horse and it's talent or potential completely based on color, and Scott wants to remind everyone to keep an open mind to the job you're wanting to accomplish and to find the right fit, not necessarily...

I’ve talked to a lot of ol timers that bred horses and always told me the second dam was the most important part of the pedigree. I’m real big on maternal lines. In fact, I believe any decent sire will do, but your mare is your horse. Maternal lines are everything. Every great stud has a great momma and every great mare has a great momma. This also explains why sometimes good and bad traits seem to skip generations.

Hard work looks different to everyone. Scott explains a story where two boys wake up on Christmas day to a tree that has a ton of horse manure under it. One boy is upset at the sight of the manure and pouts. The other goes to digging through the manure and says "With all this manure, there must be a pony in here somewhere!"So when you are looking at work or opportunities, are you griping or digging for the pony?

Thu, 24 Mar 2022 - 135 - Getting Old
It happens a little bit more each day to all of us- getting old. Are you looking forward to getting old and retiring, or do you plan to keep working past retirement age? Scott's family is full of people who continued to stay busy late into their years and ended up living into their late 80's and 90's. He also knows people who retired at 65 and then passed away less than 10 years later. Of course, it's not the number of years you've lived, but the life you've lived in the years you've bee...

Wed, 09 Mar 2022 - 131 - On To The Next One
In the excitement of The American Rodeo taking place this weekend, Scott is excited about those who are able to compete for life-changing amounts of money and what that means for our industry, as well as what we can learn from those that don't win. You learn to move on from the losses to give yourself a fresh start at the next one to improve on. When we are working on improving, that means studying and analyzing the event you compete in. There is a common denominator for distractions in ...
Mon, 07 Mar 2022 - 130 - Real Ranch Horses
After being in Montana at the Billing Livestock Sale, Scott has noticed a new trend rising in the sale rink; fat, shiny, "ranch horses" with long manes and tails. We've all been there, and probably longed for, the horse in the ring that is shiny as a diamond, slicked out even in the middle of winter, and plump and stout under saddle. Fact is, when you're going to a sale to purchase a horse to be used, those shiny horses probably haven't had to work like the ones that are missing part of their ...
Tue, 01 Mar 2022 - 129 - Old Fashioned Family Values
Scott is in Montana for another visit to the Billings Livestock Sale. He and his family have been attending for nearly 20 years and they look forward to providing quality horses to the public and spending time with friends that they've acquired over the years. While they were visiting, a friend of theirs requested that Scott speak on family values and how their family has managed over the years. It's not the way everyone chooses to run their family, but it's what has worked for the Hulme's an...
Mon, 28 Feb 2022 - 128 - Your Kids Are Not Equal... And That's Okay!
Do your kids have to receive the same of everything? Where one football turns into two, or on horse turns into 3 so that everyone gets one? That can be extremely problematic, especially in a world where everyone who participates wins. Scott believes if we don't start encouraging our kids or just people in general to be okay with being an individual, that we will begin to lose sight of the things that make each of us unique!
Sat, 26 Feb 2022 - 127 - What Owns You and What Do You Own?
At the end of the day, we are either in charge of our own lives, or the things we "own" actually own us and dictate how we get to live our lives. If simplifying your life will allow you to live a better life, why not cut out the things that are running you? Vehicle loans, home loans, horse pedigree, keeping up with the Jones's can all hinder us from living the life we truly dream of.
Fri, 25 Feb 2022 - 126 - Building From Scratch
While sitting in his home-built shop, building halters and hackamores, Scott thinks about our ancestors from about 150 years ago when they made the decision to move and start from scratch. They didn't have the tools and the access to stores like we do today, and sometimes just the job of clearing the land they claimed would kill people in the process. Scott wants his children to be able to build something with their bare hands, and that's why they all worked together to make the cabin/shop th...
Thu, 24 Feb 2022 - 125 - Narcissism, Karen's, and Stud Horses
Scott's wife received a message from someone requesting Scott to speak on narcissism and his thoughts on the subject. His views may differ from others, but he is passionate about the topic and how people tend to overuse this term. He believes that the ever-changing societal norms have brought us to a point where chivalry is dead.
Tue, 22 Feb 2022 - 124 - Sorting Calves and Being a Good Neighbor
Ranching is tough work. It can be long days and even longer nights, but it usually leads to family operations having a lot to be proud of. While gathering calves to take to a sale, Scott has the benefit of being able to work alongside his boys. In today's episode he shares some stories that illustrate that "ranching ain't always roses." Some neighbor's cows got mixed in with Scott's one time, and they had quite the adventure getting these sorted in and able to be picked up by their neighbor, ...

Wed, 16 Feb 2022 - 122 - A Man's Destiny
While watching The Last Samurai, Scott got to thinking about a particular line in the movie where destiny is being discussed. The line is as follows;Katsumoto: You believe a man can change his destiny? Nathan Algren: I think a man does what he can, until his destiny is revealed.Scott believes that while we are all instruments of God, that we can also help to choose our destiny, both good or bad. He discusses his upbringing within the LDS Church and when he was set to go on a mission and ...
Mon, 14 Feb 2022 - 121 - Following Prompts in Your Life
After discussing a man's destiny in his last episode, Scott went on to think more about how sometimes all it takes are a couple small moments that end up changing the projection of our own destiny. Scott tells stories of two moments when he followed a prompt in his life that changed his life and allowed him to really find his path to his destiny.
Mon, 14 Feb 2022 - 120 - Raising Kids with Integrity
It might seem like a simple concept; teaching your kids to say "Yes sir" and "Yes mam." But in the Hulme household, it's what they've used to teach their boys about respect and how to conduct themselves in everyday life. From banking to buying trucks, and paying family back for favors, his boys have always been taught to represent their family name in the best way possible. Scott is proud of all that his boys have accomplished.
Fri, 11 Feb 2022 - 119 - Winning is a Learned Habit
Scott recently spoke on his podcast about being disciplined in order to achieve your goals. After listening to a Clinton Anderson podcast about not settling for mediocre and that if you set out to do something to be the very best one, Scott realized that while he agrees with this mentality, he thinks that this isn't always possible! The good Lord sent us here to be our best SELF, and that might not always equate to being the best at everything we do. By staying focused, staying humble, and re...
Wed, 09 Feb 2022 - 118 - Discipline and...Toilet Paper?
After watching a movie with his family, Scott got to thinking about how Samurai's are known for being so disciplined in everything they do. Scott has always been disciplined in two areas of his life, which are his finances and his health. These two areas are discussed in today's episode and how covid-19 has changed the economy for everyday people when they go to the store, including when we all went through the great toilet paper shortage. From financial issues to addictions like alcohol or c...
Mon, 07 Feb 2022 - 117 - Whatever You Can Be, Be The Best One That You Can Be!
South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem is incredibly talented at posting or sharing bits of her life to social media, and walking away. By not engaging in the negativity that can come from being in the spotlight she undoubtedly leads a happier life and we can all learn from that. Governor Noem is known to many as one of the best Governors that our nation has known, but that could be because she has stayed true to herself and her values. Scott believes that you should do what you want to do, ...
Wed, 02 Feb 2022 - 116 - Selling The Horses You Love
Scott finished off his time with his family at the Oklahoma City Triangle Sale this past weekend. Any time they sell horses at a sale, Scott will receive calls or messages from people asking why they sell their best horses off or the ones that they love so much. The answer is simple: there is no simple answer for anyone that sells their livestock. Scott talks a little bit more about how ranchers make choices that come from a place of necessity rather than emotion, and how his family make...
Tue, 01 Feb 2022 - 115 - Husband Horse vs Wife Horse
When you have horses to sell, you will inevitably deal with a lot of questions from potential buyers. A pet peeve that Scott has is folks looking for a "husband horse," simply because the term means so many things to many different types to people. For Scott, and many ranchers, a husband horse means that a horse can be prickly and only the husband can handle him until the horse proves himself otherwise. For some, the term husband horse is now synonymous with a kid's horse or a mother-in-law h...
Thu, 27 Jan 2022 - 114 - You've Gotta Take A Risk
It would scare the world to death, what YOU are capable of, if you had confidence. Yes, I mean you. Confidence is not arrogant. Confidence is preparation. When you are prepared you don’t ask yourself if you’re good enough to win, you know. Self doubt comes from procrastination, not being prepared, laziness and surrounding yourself with non confident people. Get up and prepare yourself.
Wed, 26 Jan 2022 - 113 - God, Guns, and Country
Scott found himself two new guns today; an American made Henry lever action Golden Boy 45-70 and a Barkeep single six shooter for his wife. From Idaho to Texas, they’ve always been “well healed.” Join Scott as he discusses how guns and rifles assist in their ranching lifestyle, as well as their every day lives. In today’s world, whether you’re protecting your herd or protecting your family, Scott believes everyone should exercise their God-given responsibility to own and bear arms.
Sat, 22 Jan 2022 - 112 - Windshield Time with Scott Hulme
When Scott thinks of hard workers, one of the first people that comes to mind is his father in law. He doesn't think of someone that spends their days behind a desk, or someone who relies on government support as a career. Go down the wormhole with Scott as he discusses politics, farmer/rancher conspiracies, insider trading and campaign contributions, all while driving down the road somewhere on the plains of Texas.
Fri, 21 Jan 2022 - 111 - Where The Horse Matters by Baxter Black
While sitting in the sale yard waiting for his sons to buy and sell some calves, Scott read Baxter Black's last article titled "Where The Horse Matters." Scott truly believes this is the best piece of literature that he has ever read. Scott goes on to talk about trucks compared to his horses and what they mean to his family. From meeting his wife, to building his business and buying and selling properties, one thing has always stayed constant in Scott's life: horses.
Thu, 20 Jan 2022 - 110 - Life Lessons with Scott
Scott grew up in rural Idaho where his family ranched, and made a lot of memories. Take a trip down memory lane with Scott and some of his experiences hunting with his dad. Enjoy as he tells stories with his horse, Rhythm, as well as an elk hunting trip. Those experiences are the kind that built Scott, and he hopes you enjoy them.
Tue, 18 Jan 2022 - 109 - The Roles in a Marriage from a Cowboy's Perspective
Scott believes in a "Leave It To Beaver" type of life. He's been able to see different family roles and how it can affect marriages and families alike. He believes it is a man's duty to be a steward over his family, and while that may not be an easy task in 2022, he and his wife make it work. Scott hopes that more boys can act like men and girls to act like ladies in today's episode.
