Mon, 12 Jun 2023 - 41 - Sports Shorts! Valentino Guseli: taking snowboarding to new heights
Valentino Guseli is one of Australia’s most exciting winter athletes, with the unique ability to perform in so many snowboard disciplines. At only 18 years of age, he’s just had a World Cup season that others could only dream of, taking home the Park n Pipe Crystal Globe, Big Air Crystal Globe and a slopestyle Bronze. He is the first snowboarder to stand on the World Cup Podium in all three park and pipe disciplines in a single campaign.

Mon, 13 Feb 2023 - 27 - Lauren's achilles drama + Molly Lukowiak + paying someones sports rego
Australia’s very own Lauren Jackson brought tears to many eyes on Saturday night when she tore/ partially tore her Achilles tendon in the first 60 seconds of the match between the Southside Flyers and Sydney Flames. Despite this, it went on to be a very competitive match in front of a record crowd for the WNBL. We only wish it was being covered more!
Australia’s junior ice hockey teams are having a moment and we wanted to learn more. This week we speak with the captain of the U18 Australian Women’s team, Molly Lukowiak, about what her team’s amazing gold medal performance at the recent World Championships in Scotland means for the sport.
The BBL final happened over the weekend, which saw the emergence of a new sporting superstar who has a preference for the on-trend mullet hairstyle. Yay, but also, sigh. We revisit the glory days of the Nutri Grain Ironman and Ironwoman series, and once again ourselves talking about snow sports at the moment (how could we not?! They’re just so good!).
(Drum roll please)......we have a winner in our sports registration competition! Go listen to find out who. And somehow, amongst all the real life sport we’re watching, we’ve both got some excellent TV recommendations.

Mon, 06 Feb 2023 - 26 - What is a Knuckle Huck? + Chloe Dalton + Big Wave Surfers!
Yes there has been a lot of great tennis over the weekend BUT there’s also been a whole lot of cool stuff like the X Games and a big wave surfing competition simply called “the Eddie”. We discuss all of it, in no specific order.
We unpack the Australian need to give our Men’s doubles players nicknames, and gently suggest that wildcard wonder kids Jason Kubler and Rinky Hijikata might want to keep on brainstorming past the one they’ve just come up with.
We wanted to deep dive into a couple of issues that surround women’s sport and who better to call than the founder of The Female Athlete Project, Rugby 7s Olympic Gold Medalist and current player at the GWS Giants, the most excellent Chloe Dalton. She gave us her thoughts on the ongoing negotiations for the NRLW players CBA (collective bargaining agreement) and unpacks the campaign around #correcttheinternet.

Mon, 30 Jan 2023 - 25 - Win your kids sports registration + Albatross Nippers + so much Tennis
It’s back to school in Qld and we are slightly delirious.
But more importantly….we’re launching our first competition! We are THRILLED to be giving followers the chance to win a kids sport registration. Listen to this episode for details and head to our Instagram page (@thesportsocialpodcast) to enter.
This week we chat to Nick Marshall OAM, creator of Albatross Nippers - an all inclusive Nipper program helping children with special needs experience Nippers with other children of similar ages. We definitely get emotional.
When it comes to tennis, the discussion goes something like: Kokkinakis, metal hips, ridiculous start times, super sporting families, the women’s tennis schedules. It’s a real ride.
In non-tennis related news: the Aussie women are playing some first class cricket, the NRL still hasn’t signed off on a CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) with the Rugby League Players Association and we're processing the fact that Peter Bol tested positive for a banned substance.
Finally, the benefits of stretching and research are both hammered home via indoor sports games.

Mon, 23 Jan 2023 - 24 - The summer of tennis....and cricket... and Netflix docos + surfs up
We’re back for 2023, baby! Holidays have been ace, as have all the sporting things.
First off, we chat about sometimes tennis player Nick Kyrios (Nick, give Libby a call), and Libby explains a bit more about the United Cup.
Australia appears to be dominating Test Cricket at the moment, winning 2 test series against the West Indies and South Africa. There was a bit of cricket over the summer, but short tests meant that The Sport Social team missed their own Christmas Party at the Gabba. David Warner scored a double century in his 100th test, and Libby loved all of it, including the celebration.
In terms of streaming services, we have some recommendations!!!! First up, Untold: The Race of the Century is a must watch viewing. As babies of the 80s, we knew nothing about this story and couldn’t get enough.
And, of course, being Drive to Survive fans we were quick to get onto the latest sporting offering from Netflix: Break Point. Libby was hooked from the start, Georgie reckon’s you’ve got to get past the first 2 episodes and then you’ll be hooked. Smart for tennis and great for those fans not watching tennis year round. If you’re feeling a bit lost by the departure and decline of some of the greats, you need to watch this.

Mon, 16 Jan 2023 - 23 - Nat Cook: What it takes to host an Olympic Games
We’re still away but before we pulled up stumps for the year we snuck in a chat with one of life’s absolute gems: 5 time Olympian and Gold Medalist, Natalie Cook.
With Nat a board member of the Brisbane Organising Committee for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we were busting to talk to her about everything Olympics. And yes it’s 10 years away, but with 33(ish) sports running their biggest event, 14,000 athletes and para-athletes, 25,000 of the world’s media on hand and 50,000 volunteers in action, Brisbane 2032 will be so much more than a sports carnival. Natalie’s part of the team setting the strategic direction for the games - already slated to be carbon positive and focused on first nations reconciliation - and there will be opportunities for everyone. SIGN. US. UP!
PS. We also got a chance to ask Nat the question that every Olympian has been asked since Brisbane was awarded the Olympics - what is your advice to kids or parents of kids aiming to be an Olympian or Paralympian?

Mon, 02 Jan 2023 - 22 - Sarah Walsh: On Australia hosting the 2023 Women's Soccer World Cup
We know we said we were on holidays, but we have a few little surprise gifts for you all over the next couple of weeks. We know, we shouldn’t have (thank us by leaving a review?😆)
As we look at what 2023 has in store, we couldn’t look past the FIFA Women’s World Cup (soccer), coming to Australia and New Zealand in July. Don’t underestimate how big this event will be - tickets sales are already outperforming every previous Women’s World Cup, and spectator numbers at club matches have been soaring in Europe and North America.
With all this in mind, we talk to former Matilda, SBS commentator and Football Australia’s Head of Women’s Football, Women’s World Cup Legacy and Inclusion, Sarah Walsh. Sarah is absolutely passionate about the grassroots game in Australia and about using the Women’s World Cup to supercharge women’s sport participation in this country.
Don’t freak out if you don’t know anything about soccer - this is interesting stuff and as always, there's so much more to it than just the sport itself.

Mon, 19 Dec 2022 - 21 - Cristiano + Olivia & Lorelei Page + the David Warner Saga
Schools finished in Queensland and while we’re thrilled (because Term 4 was like a marathon) we’re also aware that it could all be going pear shaped in 3 weeks. Can’t wait!
Look, there’s lots of World Cup (the soccer kind) action to cover off but we know that you’re all smart enough to google who’s playing in the semi finals this week. So we focused on the big issues. Namely, Ronaldo’s Jamie Tart (Ted Lasso) level dummy spit over being benched.
This week we were lucky enough to chat with 16 year old twins Olivia and Lorelei Page about their experience going to nationals with the Queensland Gems as part of the netability program. Olivia and Lorelei presented with epilepsy around 18 months of age, and also have deficits around processing and vision. Through netability, the girls have not only had access to sport, but the chance to make new friends and experience independence. They really are two incredible individuals.
Libby brings her cricketing A-game to unpack what’s going on with David Warner, Cricket Australia and the ‘Independent Panel’. Georgie is mostly just proud at how far Libby has come with her understanding of the great game.
2ish quick things (the highlights of the year version)
Georgie: India v Pakistan, India v England in the T20 World Cup and the amazing crowds that have turned out to watch football/soccer in Europe this year. As it turns out, people love watching women’s sport Libby: Ash Barty winning the The Australian Open, Jakarta Antony in the Women’s Moguls at the Winter Olympics, Australia winning the Women’s Cricket World Cup…and that’s just the start of the list.Show Notes:

Mon, 12 Dec 2022 - 20 - Big weekends for different reasons + Socceroos devastation + Lauren Tischendorf
There’s a baby on the way! Over the weekend, Libby; announced that she and Luke are expecting their 4th bub, did a Ted talk all about body image and athleticism, and didn’t vomit on herself while on stage. Little miracles on so many levels.
After a very excellent effort, the Socceroos are out of the FIFA World Cup. Libby recaps the game in 140 character sound bites and we cover some of the cool little stories surrounding the big matches. We also try to understand the uniform situation of goalkeepers.
We love an athletic adventure and today we chat with the delightful Lauren Tischendorf about her Guiness Book World Record swim around Lord Howe Island. We can barely deal with the sharky-ness of the whole thing and despite this, are contemplating signing up for a swim sometime soon.
Australia has 2 new world records in the fast world of marathon running - Brett Robinson and Sinead Diver both broke long standing records while participating in events over the weekend. We can’t even dream about running that fast.
2 quick things
- F1 driver Valtteri Bottas’ VB ad is a hilarious little morsel of entertainment; and we’ve been hooked by a trailer and will definitely be watching the Netflix documentary “The Swimmers” this week.

Mon, 05 Dec 2022 - 19 - The AFL draft + Australian PGA + AFLW Grand Final + What is a chef de mission?
Georgie hit the dance floor over the weekend for an incredibly fun women’s only disco and it’s got us talking about everything dance. It’s certainly a theme for this week.
But before we get to that, we have all the ball sports to round out - the WBBL final in North Sydney was won by the Adelaide Strikers and the Socceroos beat Tunisia (some people slept through half of it). Producer Jase got up close and personal with Cameron Smith at the golf AND it turns out that going to the golf is quite fun.
We join the crowd heading to Springfield to watch the AFLW Grand Final and despite the concerns around the venue’s capacity we give it a 5 star rating for atmosphere and entertainment.
Libby is pumped to tell us about Australia’s new Chef de Mission, Anna Meares, and we have to ask: what does a Chef de Mission actually do?!
The AFL draft is happening this week and we understand absolutely NOTHING about it. Players’ agent, direct and head of operations for Vivid Sport, Natalie Drake, lets us ask all the most basic questions.
And we have highlights! We love the dance studios who aren’t scaring us away with expensive costumes, strict makeup requirements and hair rules. We chat about 2 dance studios - Superstars (Brisbane) and All Abilities Cheer and Dance (Adelaide) who are promoting inclusive and accessible dancing and cheerleading.

Mon, 28 Nov 2022 - 18 - Craig Foster + we love Isaac Humphries + what car racing are we going to watch now?
There were all kinds of amazing sports feats this week, but the things that caught our attention the most were typically ‘off field’.
Isaac Humphries had us glued to our screens when he publicly announced that he was gay and used it as an opportunity to inspire others. What a delight it was to see not only his team but the broader basketball league and other notable Australian athletes throw their support around him.
We have 2 new world cup champions in the world of rugby league - the Australian women and men’s teams won both cups over the weekend and while the sport was great, the fact that they played as a double header and came together as a united team at the end was pretty magical.
The FIFA World Cup (soccer/football is the brand of sportsball that’s relevant here) has started with…some very interesting comments from the President, Gianni Infantino. We called up Australia’s pre-eminent expert in the tricky intersection of soccer, human rights and politics, Craig Foster, to explain everything we need to know and think about when it comes to Qatar.
There’s been a dinner party for F1 and we’d like to understand the seating plan.
Georgie watched a brilliant documentary called “Ride (a brutal fairytale)” on ABC iView, about Australia’s Sam Willoughby and the USA’s Alise Willoughby (nee Post) and their incredible life pre and post a training accident. Lib’s been triggered by the FIFA Uncovered documentary and is now going through her back catalogue of corrupt sports practices documentaries…which brings her to Icarus. Must watch viewing.

Mon, 21 Nov 2022 - 17 - Millie Boyle from the NRLW + we are sour at Verstappen + Georgie tries to keep pace with Kobi Walker
Georgie bumped into the delightful Kobi Walker while out running, who happens to be a top 4 national runner in cross country and track. She can barely breathe but her stats have never looked so good (we can’t say the same for poor Kobi!).
There’s a lot of World Cup action to cover: New Zealand beat England to win the Women’s Rugby World Cup, Pakistan lost to England in the Men’s T20 World Cup final, the Jilleroos are through to Women’s Rugby League semis against PNG, the Kangaroos will play Samoa in the Men’s Rugby League final. In sports news not relating to world cups, the Matildas beat Sweden in a women’s soccer match in Melbourne and are almost a bigger brand than the Wallabies.
Over the last week a number of NRL and NRLW players have started highlighting their concerns around season dates, pay structures and key policies around things like maternity leave. We speak to Newcastle Knights Captain Millie Boyle about what NRLW players are quite reasonably asking for when negotiating with their sports governing body and why it’s so important to talk about this now.
Max Verstappen is really not a team player but then what should we expect from an F1 driver?
Libby is deep into a FIFA documentary about corruption in the world game and Georgie loved hearing former Chicago Bulls starting centre Luc Longley in conversation with Leigh Sales and Annabel Crabb on Chats 10 Looks 3.

Mon, 14 Nov 2022 - 16 - Taj Shambrook teaches us about Scooter riding + Australia had a tough week in sport
We are a hot mess today, with Libby’s children essentially producing the show and spiders roaming the studio.
We chat with an amazing force in the sport of scooter riding (that’s what it’s called, we checked). Taj Shambrook is a 14 year old from Melbourne who is taking on the world in his sport and being generous enough to take us all with him. Having just come back from Junior Worlds after placing 5th, Taj tells us all about how he got into the sport and what it means to him. His Mum Cindy jumps on the line as well, because Taj really does understate what he’s doing in the sport.
Did you know that up until August 2022 Rugby League was illegal in Greece? NEITHER. But man are we across that story now. We also chat about why Australia is out of the Men’s T20 World Cup (but honestly, what would we know) and despair at the Wallabies losing another match in the last 5 minutes by a point. Thank goodness for the Aussie Men’s 7s, who just won the Hong Kong Sevens for the first time in 34 years.
We're now into finals in the AFLW and the Brisbane Lions are through to the prelim, with 2 more semis coming up this weekend. The New York Marathon happened over the weekend and Commonwealth Gold Medal winner Jess Stenson (not Trenson Georgie!) placed 9th in women’s category, with Aussie Eloise Wellings following shortly after, and only slightly further back, our amazing friend Ruth.
And despite the fact that F1 is having a week off, we still find a way to talk about it. Not sorry. Go have a listen to The Imperfects episode with Kate Reid, a former Williams aerospace engineer turned pastry chef (we’re now on a croissant mission). And Libby is raving about Senna, a documentary about the life of F1 racer Ayrton Senna. It’s possibly what’s going to keep you going until Season 5 of Drive to Survive.

Mon, 07 Nov 2022 - 15 - Nicole Livingstone + Danny Ric back at Redbull? + Cricket World Cup
We need to talk about all the black pants in the Australian Men’s T20 World Cup cricket kit. And also about the most incredible match between India and Pakistan, witnessed by over 90,000 people at the MCG and viewed around the world by millions. Matt Hayden wasn’t wrong when he said it would be the penultimate of any cricketing tournament.
The final round of AFLW happened over the weekend and to mark this we had a chat with former swimmer, commentator and now General Manager of the AFLW, Nicole Livingstone. We practically want to start playing AFLW tomorrow, and love her take on funding for women’s sport in Australia.
There’s been a lot of commentary around netball over the last couple of weeks and if you haven’t seen the footage of Donnell Wallam taking a layup for the final point to win the match, you really should. It’s practically a movie ending. On the sponsorship saga, we don’t add a lot to this other than we need to do so much better with our First Nations people.
Of course there’s a bit of F1 banter.
We couldn’t do an episode without a big shout out to James Brougham aka Salty Jocks for nearly (only 4kms to go) finishing his 500km challenge to raise money for the RFDS.
Finally, Michelle Lee is currently rowing from the US to Australia and we talk about the fact that after a day stuck inside her tiny little cabin due to weather, she decided to head out and row in it anyway. What’s not to love.

Mon, 31 Oct 2022 - 14 - Comeback Special - Lauren Jackson & Cody Simpson speak about their return to sport
Producer Jase is away on his honeymoon, and while he said we could try and record our normal weekly episode ourselves, we all agreed that the likelihood of of us mucking something up was HIGH.
So that we could keep delivering some relevant sports chat, we’ve called up two exceptional athletes, Lauren Jackson and Cody Simpson, to talk to them about their respective comebacks to basketball and swimming in 2022. Even if you’ve never heard of Cody or watched Lauren, we think you’ll love these stories.
Back in 2021, Australian basketball legend Lauren Jackson started returning to the gym, just to get fit and healthy. She started shooting some hoops with her best friend and decided it would be fun to play for Albury (the local team she’d always wanted to play for). And then she had a look at the fitness requirements for the national squad and she was fit enough to meet some of them. You know where this is going. But what she didn’t expect was how much she would re-live the pain of her first retirement and how important that process was.
In 2009, Cody Simpson walked away from junior swimming to go and live out his music dreams. Regarded by greats such as Ben Harper as “one of the guitarists of his generation”, by 2019 Cody couldn’t shake the feeling that he was meant to swim. Knowing that music was for a lifetime, he started training again to see what he could achieve. And while there’s a drive to succeed in arenas like the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, he’s found that purity of sport that was missing from music. We can’t wait to see what’s to come.

Sun, 23 Oct 2022 - 13 - Running ridiculous distances + Redbull Cliff Diving + The Sydney Cycling Sisters
Nedd Brockmann has just run from Perth to Sydney, leaving us lost for words. The 22 year old has run over 100kms for 40 days, and in doing so, raised nearly $1.5M for homelessness charity, We are Mobilise. It leads us down a very windy path that covers our own running pursuits, mullets and extreme sporting achievements.
We give a wrap up of world sport tournaments and question whether anyone’s running the international sporting diary. Libby gives us a high level overview of the Women in Sport Awards and takes us through the winners (there were many and they were excellent).
The Redbull Cliff Diving World Series held its final event in Sydney over the weekend and it was nothing short of epic. Australian Rhiannan Iffland won the womens with a near perfect dive and Georgie managed to fit in a therapy session regarding her fear of heights.
The Australian netball team, the Diamonds, have hit a snag around sponsorship. First Nations player Donnell Wallam is reportedly uncomfortable with wearing the logo of Hancock Prospecting when playing, and her team have got behind her on this issue. We love the team dynamic and also question whether women’s sports get held to a higher standard.
And for grassroots sport at its best: the Sydney Cycling Sisters were born out of 6 women wanting to feel safe exercising, and led to so much more. Inas Karem talks to us about the joy of getting outside and connecting with nature, setting an example for her daughters and building a community.

Mon, 17 Oct 2022 - 12 - Matthew Hayden (T20 World Cup) + Cliff Jumping + Sport is rife with cheating
The Bathurst 1000 happened over the weekend and we’re pretty impressed that we’ve discovered another type of car racing.
The T20 World Cup starts this Sunday so we chatted to former Australian Batsman and general legend Matthew Hayden about the upcoming tournament, the importance of cricket for countries such as India and Pakistan and drop in pitches (listen and learn friends - we didn’t know what that was either!).
Red Bull is all over sport at the moment and no more so than in the area of cliff diving. We chat about Australian legend Rhiannon Iffland and the craziness of jumping out of helicopters. While we can’t understand the motivation, we’re totally here for the spectacle of it all.
Cheating has become a bit of a thing over in the US. We cover off on 3 fringe sporting stories that you need to know about - lead weights in fishing, possible butt plugs in chess and women actually winning poker games.
Libby is loving the importance of play as highlighted by Human Playground on Netflix. Georgie was a total nerd and watched the National Press Club address by Kieren Perkins about sport for the next decade in Australia. She may have taken notes.

Mon, 10 Oct 2022 - 11 - Gen Dohrmann (Women Sport Aus) + Libby is cranky + Wheelbarrow Runners
The NRL had a big weekend with the men’s and women’s finals playing as a double header. The women’s game saw 2 new teams, the Newcastle Knights and the Parramatta Eels go head to head and the score really didn’t reflect the top quality of the game. We loved a bit of Barnesy (cue Libby singing) but were a bit underwhelmed by the western Sydney darby between the Penrith Panthers and the Parramatta Eels. Parramatta haven’t won a game since 1986 (spoiler alert: nothing has changed), and fans had to be reminded to stay calm in the event of a win or a loss.
This week we became aware of a great little initiative called The Sports Bra Project and wanted to learn more about it. We chatted with Gen Dohrmann, avid Hawthorne AFLW supporter and the head of Women Sport Australia, an organisation that creates strategies, programs and events to promote equal opportunities for women and girls in sport.
Libby is cranky about an article that came out over the weekend in Herald Sun and so is Gen, who rightly points out that you can’t compare a game that’s been around for 100+ years (AFL) with a game that’s in its 7 season (AFLW). Georgie plays devil’s advocate and is lucky to not be put in the bin herself 😆.
F1 time! There are new merch opportunities, fuel excise problems, tire issues and medical certificates. Also, we can check our calendars to see if we’re available for the Australian Grand Prix.
Lauren Jackson’s coming back to the Opals for the World Cup was a remarkable act of service aimed at rebuilding the culture of Australian basketball and we think she delivered that and so much more. And we salute the little sporting wins, with a guy based in WA running 500kms WITH A WHEELBARROW to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctors Service (as part of the RFDS’s Oceans to Outback fitness challenge).

Mon, 03 Oct 2022 - 10 - All of Georgie's teams lost this week + Hawthorn racism review + The Knuckleheads
How does it happen that every team you support loses in one weekend? Such was the case for Georgie this weekend. The North Queensland Cowboys lost to Parramatta Eels, the Sydney Swans lost to the Geelong Cats, the Wallabies lost to the All Blacks (again) at Eden Park, and the South Sydney Rabbitohs lost to the Penrith Panthers. Thank goodness for Robbie Williams. He really saved it for us. We now also have an A3 Flow Chart for the F1, and have been able to reference the movie Cars in this conversation. The NRWL and AFLW are moving into finals rounds and we’ll have more on those codes next week.
The Hawthorn Racism Review was released last week and its contents were so distressing that we wanted to look away and not talk about it on the podcast. However, not discussing these things is a pretty privileged position to be in, and ignoring a problem never helps. We’re very aware that our perspective is that of two white women, so please make sure you watch or read the comments of First Nations people such as Tony Armstrong, Eddie Betts, Brooke Boney and Stan Grant (see the links below).
And for a grassroots heartwarmer, we bring you the Darwin Wanderers AFL Under 12 all girls team. Affectionately referred to as “the Knuckleheads” this girl gang joined the mixed comp and beat all the boys to earn their spot in the grand final. Have a listen to some of their comments - we think they sum up everything brilliant that sport could be.

Mon, 26 Sep 2022 - 9 - Bonnie Hancock + Bledisloe + Caitlin Moran + Georgie is so old she remembers radio
[Sidebar: We’re dealing with sick kids, bad internet connections and average audio. It must be school holidays. Please bear with us and apologies to Producer Jase! We’ll be back to normal next week.]
Australia’s former ironwoman Bonnie Hancok just circumnavigated Australia in a 10kg surf ski. Just let that sink in for a minute. She paddled over 10,000kms in 8 months and 10 days, and in doing so has raised over $80,00 for Gotcha4Life. And after she broke the record for the fastest circumnavigation and furthest paddle by a female over a 24 hour period, she went on to do another 24 hour paddle to break the men's record, paddling 234kms in 24 hours off Hamilton Island. As well as being in total awe of this, you’ll be able to hear us struggling to deal with her tales of crocodiles and sharks as she travelled around the top end, and about how she was able to keep paddling month after month, despite the fact that she was ready to stop.
In weekly sporting news: Georgie despairs that the Bledisloe Cup was handed to New Zealand via a referee. We wrap up the AFL and NRL, and get cranky about the treatment of NRWL player Caitlin Moran over an Instagram post. We reflect on how you don’t have to be a hard core couch warrior to watch sport, and get excited about the upcoming Basketball World Cup!
Sticking with the theme of boats, Georgie can’t stop talking about Australian solo rower Michelle Lee and her latest challenge to row from the North America to Australia. And despite declaring that she might never go on holiday again, Libby’s pretty stoked about all the kilometers she walked yesterday without even trying.

Mon, 19 Sep 2022 - 8 - Libby is insufferable + Sports wrap + Steph Gilmore + Latrell Mitchell + Mens Walk and Talk
Libby’s gone all spiritual and given the full moon has been charging her crystals (whyyyyyyyyyy?). And because she has been on yoga training, she hasn’t watched a shred of sport over the weekend 🤯. In a shock to no-one, Georgie has.
The AFL is down to the final 4, and this week also signed the biggest sporting deal in Australian history. Australian One Day International captain Aaron Finch has retired, and thrown his support behind David Warner (who is banned for leadership positions for life given his involvement in ball tampering). This takes us down a deep rabbit hole that somehow ends up at gambling funding sport.
Stephanie Gilmore won her 8th world surf league title and we’re pretty darn impressed. The Women’s Rugby 7s team now also has a triple crown, winning the Rugby 7s World Cup this morning, to add to their World Series title and Commonwealth Games Gold.
Because we are not NRL experts, we bring in the big guns - Annabelle Bretts, host of Triple M’s Queensland’s Rush Hour. We talk about all the things from the Rabbitohs and Roosters match, including Latrell Mitchell’s continual booing by Roosters fans. We also touch on the Taylan May controversy and round it out with AB’s Granddad’s golden rules for watching sport.
Georgie had lived a whole day by 8am on Sunday morning but a trip to the park at 8am led her to discover an awesome men’s walking group. Libby starts talking about yoga again and Producer Jase and Georgie have agreed to give it a try.

Mon, 12 Sep 2022 - 7 - Kyrgios at the U.S Open + Rugby Union is boring + we learn more about golf
There’s a lot to discuss after last weekend’s sporting schedule and the US Open Tennis is no exception. Serena Williams bowed out in the 3rd round to Australian Ajla Tomljanović, and Nick Kyrgios might be growing up (but we feel conflicted).
In the men’s AFL, 4 epic games were played to the delight of fans, and in the men’s NRL we now have a top 8 which doesn’t include the Broncos (Libby has thoughts). Rugby Union is frustrating Georgie because of All.The.Rules.
Our intern-level F1 correspondent reports on this week’s seat movements (using questionable maths) and there are pit lane highlights.
We wanted to chat about Cameron Smith, LIV Golf and the PGA, but then we realised how little we know about golf in general. Cue: Steve Keipert, Associate Editor of Australian Golf Digest Magazine, an absolute guru on the world of golf and the man who literally wrote the book “Golf for Dummies”.
There’s a new movie on Netflix that; a) is about sport and, b) has Adam Sandler in the lead role. Say no more. It’s not Happy Gilmore, but it is absolutely worth watching.

Mon, 05 Sep 2022 - 6 - Nat Grider + History making AFLW + Kokkinakis or is it Thokkinakis
The AFLW Season 7 kicked off over the weekend, with a historical 18 teams now competing in the women’s draw. We spoke to Brisbane Lion’s Vice Captain, Nat Grider, about the growth of the competition since 2017, ACL injuries, and whether AFL has found its place in Australia’s sporting calendar.
The Belgium Grand Prix happened early Monday morning (Australian time), and Libby now thinks she could be an F1 driver. The swimming World Short Course swimming event was held in Sydney over the weekend, prompting Georgie to re-live her tumble turn trauma. We talk rugby 7s and rugby union, and a new guy, Thokkinakis (?) going head to head with Kyrios in the first round of the US Open 😆.
The sporting documentary is having a moment and we talk about two new releases this week - Fearless: The Inside Story of the AFLW, and Ryan Reynolds’ foray into soccer team ownership in Welcome to Wrexham. Following on from our discussion with muscle advocate and NRLW player Julia Robinson, Libby talks about the importance of body image for kids and the Embrace Kids movie.
We give a shout out to Bonnie Hancok, who has just circumnavigated Australia in a kayak to raise money for mental health charity Gotchta4Life. Holy smokes that’s a long way!

Mon, 29 Aug 2022 - 5 - Julia Robinson + Duel in the Pool + AFL observations + Afghanistan Olympians
Some people think that female athletes can’t have muscles and we’re over it.
We get straight to work and chat with 3 time premiership winning NRWL player, Julia Robinson, about her standing up to the body shaming bullies.
Libby’s been reliving 2007 with the Duel in the Pool in Sydney. Australia narrowly lost to the US, but the event saw multi ability athletes compete in the same events, as well as the last races for Ellie Cole and Matt Levy.
We recognise our complete lack of knowledge when it comes to Australia’s oldest game, AFL, but can’t help but have a chat about the mess that erupted at Essendon this week and the nail biting match between Collingwood and Carlton.
Georgie talks about the arrival in Australia of Afghanistan's Olympic flag-bearer, Kimiya Yousofi, and what Afghanistan’s participation in the Olympics will mean for women and girls from that country.

Mon, 22 Aug 2022 - 4 - Cross Fit + Retiring/Taking breaks + F1 + Auslan Footy
There is a new 6 time cross fit world champ in town and some of Libby’s experiences and opinions on the sport leave Georgie lost for words.
Serena Williams is evolving away from tennis and some of Australia’s sporting captains have decided to take a break. Is sport getting better at supporting athletes during their careers?
Having now watched 3 seasons of F1: Drive to Survive, we consider ourselves to be car racing experts. This is concerning and thankfully Producer Jase is there to fill in the gaps. Powerpoint slide, complete with driver movements, to follow.
We talk to Georgie’s mate, Mia Walsh, about that time she taught her QAFLW team their team song in Auslan to surprise their deaf teammate, and the impact that has had on the development of a national Auskick program for deaf and listening impaired kids. Sport doing what sport does best. We love it.

Mon, 15 Aug 2022 - 3 - Matthew Denny + so much comm games gold + Georgie has lost touch
After one podcast episode, Georgie has decided to take a holiday. What a monster. She comes to us live from Falls Creek.
We catch Matt Denny in the middle of the night in Birmingham and chat to him about his amazing gold medal winning performance at the Commonwealth Games. He gives us the why behind his bromance with Brandon Starc and his unofficial role as Team Spirit Captain.
In our second week of Comm Games wrap up, we touch on a few gold medal winning performances, discuss how COVID has been managed at this massive sporting event and round off with a gymnastics heart warmer (see what we did there?).
Apparently, 2 years after it was first released, people still need to know about Ted Lasso 👀. And don’t assume you’ve done a sport or activity for the last time - there’s still so much fun to be had.

Mon, 08 Aug 2022 - 2 - Comm Games 2022 + Leisel Jones + Manly Sea Eagles + Cardio Tennis
Nothing like the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games to kick things off! We talk about Australia’s gold medal haul, and the moments that didn't involve silverware but had us glued to the screen.
With all the excitement on the pool deck, we call good mate and fellow Olympian Leisel Jones to talk about the Australian team’s performance, and get her take on Emma McKeon and Kyle Chalmers.
Last week an NRL team decided to bring the game into 2022 with a pride jersey, only to have 7 players stand down for the match. In a week full of opinion, Sunday’s episode of Offsiders (ABC iView 31/07/2022) had some of the most considered commentary on the issue.
When was the last time you learnt something new? Turns out, trying a new sport is apparently fun (even if you’re not the best at it).
