- 181 - Unexpected Respite
Wrong. Wrong. And wrong again.
You'd think that I'd have learned by now. I've had fifty-three years to practice, after all.
But no.
Still, I make the mistake of thinking that to make things 'better' and 'easier', I must look outside of myself.
Go far afield. Spend a ton of money and wrap my mum and me up in cashmere rugs, then sit alongside Rose and Kathy Bates in first class on the Titanic.
Way off, Liz. Not even close.
This week's podcast update is brought to you with love, tenderness and gratitude. And a few tears.
We wanted to share three things that happened to us in the past few weeks. Small serenities that brought unexpected comfort and respite while we attempt to navigate the imminent loss of my lovely mum.
Thank you for allowing us this safe space to share the intimate details of this challenging time in our lives. You are wonderful.
Yours,
Liz and Brian xx

Tue, 16 Apr 2024 - 32min - 180 - Say it. While you still can
This was one of the hardest podcast episodes I have ever recorded. But it was necessary.
I won't watch the recording back because I know for a fact that I'll get cold feet and tell Bri to delete it.
So. I hope it's okay and that it isn't too upsetting for you—my sincere apologies if it is. My intention was never to make you feel sad, only strong. Hugged. Confident. Brave enough to speak your truth. To always say what you wish to say to the people who matter the most.
Because the world needs truth.
The world needs real.
The world needs people like you.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for listening.
Yours,
Liz x

Tue, 02 Apr 2024 - 34min - 179 - Troubled Times
Another behind-the-scenes podcast where Liz and Brian share their decision to discuss such personal details about their marriage and life in public (including talking about Liz's mum, who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer).
The couple talks about how their family is (trying) to navigate the "new normal", addressing guilt, wrestling with emotions and lastly, the importance of not assuming to know what others are thinking or feeling.
You never know. Not ever. If you doubt this statement, just remember what I told you about the Spitfire.
This podcast is my and Brian's outlet: our escape, our therapy. And we really, really hope it feels the same for you too. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for giving us your ear and allowing us into your life each week to chat.
You are incredibly important, cherished and loved by us both.

Tue, 27 Feb 2024 - 44min - 177 - Braving Alternative Therapy. Torture or Bliss?
Yesterday, Liz experienced floatation therapy. Spent the day floating in a tank of salt water. Alone. No lights. No sounds. No Bri.
This week, the couple discuss the experience and Brian voices his very strong opinions on 'Crotch Eye-balling' and other weird and wonderful alternative therapies.
Sit back, nod, relate, and giggle while the couple talks about whacky stress relief, disastrous Greek hotels, and listener holiday laments.

Tue, 30 Jan 2024 - 44min - 174 - 2024. What's up & what's in
I don't know about you, but I get the feeling that people are ready for a change.
I'm not sure what that collective "change" is, but I know there is one. I can feel it. Deep in my bones. Under the bits of orangey, saggy flesh.
In this week's podcast, as well as bringing you bang up-to-date with what's been going on in the the world of La Deacles, we wanted to share a few personal "ins". Ins for 2024.
My 'ins' are deep and meaningful. Brian's are...well ...they're... very Brianish.

Thu, 07 Dec 2023 - 47min - 171 - Gatecrashers, royalty & deranged morning routines
Liz and Brian’s morning routine has changed drastically. Just when they thought they’d discovered a nice quiet hidey-hole to indulge in some golfy meditation, a bunch of rude gatecrashers (and a soggy beast) forced Liz to act quite strangely.
Talking of strange…
In this weeks husband and wife we discuss the glorious habits of the Queen’s alkie sister, why Brian feels inferior to a hunk who never sleeps and what on earth we will tell our 19-year-old daughter, Tess when she comes home for Christmas and is faced with a lucky bag.

In this week's episode, husband and wife Liz and Brian set out to discover if it is healthy for a couple to spill the beans about personal stuff online. Reveal all.
Is it really necessary to wash those filthy sheets in public, or should 'things like that' be folded neatly into a square and rammed into the top drawer with the flowery hankies? Let's find out...

Thu, 09 Nov 2023 - 1h 10min - 168 - Unwanted News
In the five years that this podcast has been going, this week's episode was the hardest one to record.
For those who have been with us for a while, you will know we try our hardest to promote honesty and transparency. We like to keep it real. Sometimes (for those who have read my book) maybe a little too real. I'm not one for tricking people. Making things look better than they are. So, as hard as it was to make this episode, it was necessary.
You see, we are the same, you and me. We laugh at the same things, and we cry at the same things, too. And knowing that you are there for me and I for you makes us both feel stronger.
Thank you for allowing me to lean on you this week.

Fri, 03 Nov 2023 - 53min - 167 - Wet Behind The Ears
Looking back, I was so wet behind the ears I'm surprised I didn't drown.
Two years ago, I announced to the world that I would be writing, publishing and marketing my first-ever book with no clue what lay ahead. Ahh...isn't ignorance bliss...
But as challenging as it has been, writing and publishing my book is STILL the best thing I have ever done.
In this week's special edition podcast, Brian and I are celebrating something we have been working on for months: the AUDIOBOOK of the Travel Bog Diaries (narrated by me and produced by Brian) is now ready and available to purchase!

How did the kids feel about being so exposed in the book?
Was making this book anything like you expected?

Thu, 12 Oct 2023 - 59min - 165 - What a Drip
This week's episode is brought to you from the lovely and very gorgeous art deco city of Napier in New Zealand, where Liz and Bri are housesitting for five weeks in a rambling old villa perched high on a lofty hill.
Ah...Life is perfect.
Me and Bri, living like a Lord and Lady Muck in our ole kiwi manor house.
What's not to love about that?
Well...get yourself comfy, and we'll tell you...
This Ole Kiwi HouseI don't know anyone who doesn't see a picture in a glossy house magazine of a rambling old villa and romanticize about living in it.
I know I do. I see it all so perfectly.
There's me, dressed in my floral frock, washing my dishes in the stone-fired, enamelled porcelain Belfast sink. Inhaling the wafts of wisteria that creep over the pretty glass paned windows...
And there's Bri.
Dripping snot from his left nostril.

Thu, 05 Oct 2023 - 40min - 164 - How's Life Alone? Tessa. (Behind The Scenes)
This week's podcast is a behind-the-scenes chat with Liz and her daughter, Tessa.
Tessa (19) is a regular guest on the podcast. Since her last visit, she has flown the nest to start a new life alone in the capital city of New Zealand, Wellington.
As is often the case with life, things don't always turn out as we expect them to. We don't feel the way we anticipate. Life throws us challenges, and although they are necessary for us to grow, new experiences aren't always easy or pleasant.
And that's why we wanted to share this conversation.
I asked Tessa to come to the microphone and share what life has been like moving away and living alone for the first time.
We know that many of you listening to this podcast have kids, and we hope by sharing what Tessa feels (and her experiences), you will resonate, and it will help in some small way.
Sit back, pour yourself something nice and join this intimate conversation between mother and daughter.

The most memorable part of the decade
The most challenging part of the decade

Wed, 05 Jul 2023 - 58min - 154 - Escaping to Wellington. But at what cost?
Brian and Liz are knackered. Whacked. They need a weekend away. Escape for a few days.
The trouble is, accommodation in New Zealand is not cheap...in fact, it's costly. And there's no way they can sleep on their daughter's couch. Not when she lives in a penthouse with drafty windows...
So what do Liz and Bri do when they want to travel and pay nothing?? They turn to what they love the most: Housesitting!
Sit back, relax and join us on this week's podcast for conversations on holidaying in Wellington, food, wine, and the ongoing persuit to make multiple streams of money online.

It was scary.
Probably the scariest thing I’ve ever done.
And I've done some scary things.
Doing Scary Things in LifeMoving to the other side of the world and leaving everything behind (even though Brian, my husband, had never set foot in NZ before and was taking my word that it was nice...)
Taking my two kids out of mainstream school to teach them from home (even though I am not a teacher and actually don't even know the difference between a real comma and one of those with a dot above it...)
Taking the money that we made from the sale of our business (fifty grand that was supposed to be for our retirement) and blowing it on a dream year-long trip back-packing trip around the world with our teenagers (even though we knew we would have to come home to no job and no money).
But even that. Even ALL those things. Nothing was as scary as what I have just done.
Writing a bookFor the past two and half years, I have been writing my first book.
And today, I published it. I gave it to the world.
Tah dah! Ladies and gentlemen, I very proudly present:

Sat, 10 Jun 2023 - 53min - 151 - Pack ur bags
Five years ago, Brian and I left everything behind (including a full-time job with a regular wage) to take our family (two teenage kids), travelling around the world for a year.
We visited almost thirty countries, including Japan, India, Sri Lanka, America, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong and many countries in Europe. Our budget was 100 NZD (approx $70) a day.
Because we were visiting places we had never been to before, we made sure to do plenty of research beforehand.
Sadly, lots (most) of the information we found online turned out to be a load of codswallop. Fearmongering rubbish.
Today, because Liz is almost ready to release "The TravelBog Diaries: One Woman's wickedly funny confessions of surviving family world travel" (HURRAY!!!), we thought it would be fun to stay on the travel theme and share some of those Un-truths with you. Let you know that not everything you read online about destinations is believable and inspire you to step out and explore these countries yourself!!

Wed, 31 May 2023 - 54min - 150 - Book cover FEAR! Behind the scenes
After almost two and a half years, I am almost ready to publish my first book. That book is called The Travel Bog Diaries. It is made up of hilarious short stories of what it was REALLY like to travel the world with two phone-addicted teenagers and a husband with an acid reflux problem…That book is my baby. Real. Raw. Honest. Funny and tender.
The biggest fear that I had to overcome when going ahead with this book (I self-published) was the book cover. I knew what I wanted, and let's just say... my final choice was very...real.
I knew when I designed the cover that it was exactly what was needed to introduce this book. It sums up the book perfectly. Perfectly imperfect. Still, I have never felt so vulnerable, terrified or exposed in all of my life.
This behind-the-scenes podcast shares that process and explains why I had to leave myself open and vulnerable in order to remain true to myself and my readers.
Enjoy!

Mon, 15 May 2023 - 41min - 149 - Hot, sweaty MESS
Fess up.
Hot, sweaty MESS.
Time to confess.
When does it happen? When do you turn into a dithering, hot, sweaty, prickly fuss-bag who shakes and quivers because she has misplaced her sunglasses? Even though it's pitch black outside. And freezing cold. And winter.
In this week's hilarious episode, Liz shares about her recent disastrous trip to the capital of New Zealand to see her daughter, Brian talks dirty jeans, and they both let you in on a couple of secret confessions...
PLUS! Liz reads another snippet from her soon-to-released book (not long now, hoping for mid-May). Sit back, get ready to giggle and...

Tue, 04 Apr 2023 - 46min - 145 - Seen, heard and a (tiny bit) pis*ed
You'd think after practicing for almost twenty-two years, me and Bri would have this parenting lark off to a tee by now.
But no. Once again, here we are asking if anyone else finds this tremendously-rewarding-but-hardy-pardy-pig-in-a-pokie-head-buttingly-difficult thing hard to navigate.
Blub, slurp, burp. Well? Do you?
We've had a right old weekend, me and Bri. What should have been a celebration ended up being a bit of a three-way counseling session. The only positive was there was lots of alcohol...
In this week's show, we talk about the struggles and triumphs of being a parent to young adults, drinking far too much wine, and Liz reads the very first yet-to-be-heard introduction of her soon-to-released book. Enjoy!

Thu, 09 Mar 2023 - 43min - 143 - Gosh. Is This Too Graphic??
We need your help. Or at least one of us does.
As you may remember, Liz's book is currently with the editor. The nice one with the blonde hair.
Last week the editor sent back the first two chapters. Full of edits. These edits were accompanied by an email that said, "these edits are suggestions. This is your book. You get to say what stays or goes".
I told you she was nice.
The trouble is, there's a problem. A big problem. Something that Liz never anticipated when she so cockily employed a professional editor...
Liz is a recovering people pleaser. Actually, that's a lie. She hasn't recovered yet. She's still in the acceptance phase.
So our question to you, lovely listener, is this:
Does what I read out in this episode offend you? Is it too graphic? Or does this slightly sick-but-still-funny attempt at humour tickle you?
We would love to know. Email Liz at liz@itsadrama.com or Brian at brian@itsadrama.com
Thank you, and enjoy!!

Fri, 24 Feb 2023 - 49min - 142 - Our Daughter. Tessa. Behind The Scenes
Tessa is our daughter. She is 18. In two days' time, she will leave me, Brian and her older brother (and the home where she grew up) to start a new life in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. Alone. Brian and I will officially be empty nesters.
Regular listeners to our podcast will know the effect this huge transition has had on us. Especially me. These past few months have been tough.
I always imagined that when the time came for my kids to leave home, I would be this super cool, open, liberal, go-with-the-flow parent. One who relished the opportunity of having the house to herself so she could indulge in some grown-up, mature stuff with her husband.
But no. The opposite is true (Sorry, Bri). I'm clinging to those apron strings so tightly that the poor girl can't go to the bathroom without me trailing behind her...
In this week's behind-the-scenes episode, you will be treated to something very rare. A one-to-one in-depth talk between me and my daughter. In it, she shares every thought going through her lovely head as she makes this big transition into adulthood. Enjoy.
PS: Enjoyed the show? Email me at liz@itsadrama.com and let me know! I will pass any messages on to Tessa

Thu, 16 Feb 2023 - 48min - 141 - What a Bummer
Bummer: Noun. 1. An unpleasant situation. 2. A Traveler. 3. A motherless calf. 4. A fouler.
We make lots of bloopers on this podcast. Say embarrassing things that make the other person's jaw drop. Sometimes we edit these blunders out, but most of the time, we leave them in. I'd like to tell you that this is because we are transparent and real. Authentic and vulnerable. But the truth is, we're lazy. Editing takes ages. Hours, sometimes. There's no WAY Bri can spend that much time fine-tuning our conversations and turning them into something kind and intelligent. Not when the hedges need trimming.
Take this week's episode, for example. Here is part of the conversation that Liz and Brian have about a certain man-eater that took a fancy to Brian in Paris:
Liz: "She fancied you...No sooner were we on the road than she sent you that Whatsapp message."
Bri: "She was just being nice"
Liz: "Yeah...but she didn't know that you would be reading her message from the front of the car, did she? You with your smelly bum..."
I know. How cruel. A (just for the record) totally untrue. Lies. All of it. Honest.
In this week's episode, Liz and Brian talk about...Brian's emotional state.
The reality (and horribleness) of being empty nesters.
The fancy pants flirt.
Toilet troubles.
And Liz will continue to read the (unedited, yet-to-be-released) snippet from Chapter one of her new book!
Podcast episodes:
Family Time. Perfect Peace or MEGA Pressure??
A Ruthless Response (including pt 1 of Liz's book)
The Ghost of Brian's Past (including pt 2 of Liz's book)

We desperately wanted to bring you an upbeat, humorous podcast to kick the year off, but sometimes life just doesn't turn out that way.
So you are getting the alternative. The real stuff. A conversation between a husband and wife trying to navigate life.
You are also getting PART 3 from the first chapter in Liz's upcoming book (which I still can't think of a title for?!).
Thank you for being here. Thank you for creating a space where we feel safe enough (and brave enough) to share the things that others might hide.
Thank you.

Tue, 10 Jan 2023 - 1h 09min - 139 - Family Time. Perfect Peace or (Mega) Pressure??
Every year is the same. October rolls around, and, without fail, the same futile conversation takes place.
"Let's make a pact!" Me and Bri say cheerfully as we slurp on our pumpkin soup, "This Christmas, we will...
- Not go overboard on presents. After all, the holiday season is about being together, not scanning the presents like scavvy vultures to see who's spent the most. Hurray! Keep the meal nice and simple. No foo-fah for us. Turn off all devices. We will play board games and talk after dinner. Be like the Waltons. Go easy on the alcohol. (Not sure why). Just because it's more organic and healthy. Yippee! Smile and be happy. Always.
And every single year, the same thing happens.
We...
- Spend shit loads of money, then get mad when each child doesn't fall at our feet with gratitude and say, "Wow! Thank you! I know how hard you work. I can't tell you how grateful I am for this box of Ferrero Rocher." Spend all day slaving over the stove making a stupidly fancy creme caramel recipe that is far too hard and involves separating eggs. Which, when served at dinner, is assumed to be shop bought. Take out the phone a billion times a day and say. "Oh wait! let me video it! I'll need to remember this when you leave home, and I'm sad and dead". Sulk because the kids don't say how wonderful and scrumptious your creme caramel is. Get pissed. Get in a mood. Cry. Be miserable. Moan. Feel guilty for mentioning death at Christmastime. Cry a bit more.
This is the last podcast episode of 2022, so we thought we'd go out with a band. No holding back with this one...!
Today you will discover the reality of the holiday season in the Deacle family household, Brian's French run-in with the runs and why Liz will never feel the same about a certain perfume ever again...
Sending you many and much of everything lovely and bright.

Thu, 29 Dec 2022 - 51min - 138 - The Ghost of Brian's Past...
For years, Brian and I have disagreed over what Christmas morning should look like. What traditions we should pass down to our young children. Presents wrapped or unwrapped? Gifts given or hidden? Tree artificial or real? Mummy sloshed or sober?
Decisions, decisions...
In this week's Christmas special, we let three ghosts out of the bag...Take a skeleton out of the closet and treat you to a third reading of Liz's book. This is a snippet from Chapter one, where Liz introduces you to her kids and tells you why she threw everything in the air to backpack the world on a shoestring with the family.
Whatever you are doing this holiday season, know that we send you peace, love and happiness and wish nothing but the best for you in 2023.
Enjoy!

I'm still trying to figure out if telling someone that they'll never amount to anything makes them stronger and more determined, like a lioness on rollerskates or defeated and beaten. Like a tired old bow-wow.
This week Liz was picked to pieces by someone she respected. And it hurt.

Doing Something That Scares The Pants Off You
I have been working on my book for almost two years. Last month I completed it. And so it was time. Time to let an editor take a look.
Gulp.
Handing it over to a "proper writer" (someone who has actually finished and published their work as opposed to someone who dilly-dallies around and spends most of her days fantasising about signing hardbacks in the foyer of WHSmiths) was probably one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.
But I did it.
In this week's episode, not only will you be treated to a reading of the opening chapter of my book, but I will also share what happened when the editor responded. Stand by...

Typical. All around the world without so much of a sniff, and then you come home and get Covid. And not only that, you're not coping with being home as well as you thought you would...
I'd never really given much thought to what is known as the vacation blues. Until now, that is.
We warn you. This isn't the most uplifting episode. But it's real. And that's all that matters.

We're back. After six months of complete freedom; swanning around Europe and Asia doing exactly as we please, we are back home to New Zealand. And boy did we land with a bump.
In this week's show, we wanted to share the realities of long-term travel. Give you a glimpse into the nitty gritty truths of what returning home to normal life after being on the road for six months looks and feels like.
This show is dedicated to our beautiful girl Pandora. The best cat a family could ever ask for. RIP sweet girl.

Total Cost to Travel Europe & Asia For 6 MonthsWe talk about this briefly on the show but I wanted you to know the exact cost of our 6 month trip.
Our total cost for the six months trip came in at $33,000 NZD. That's an average of $176 NZD a day (excluding flight). This included, accommodation, food, petrol and entertainment.
This is $20,000 USD and £17,000.
I think that you'll agree that this is pretty incredible.
We were able to make massive savings by housesitting. When we evaluated our costs we discovered that housesitting (in the UK and Europe) saved us approximately $16,000 USD.

So sit back, enjoy the show and let us wow you with what we are about to share!
PS: Can we just say a HUGE thank you! thank you for being here with us for the past six months, for sharing our highs and lows and for supporting us along the way. You are wonderful. Thank you x

The Wise Card is amazing for travel and as a budgeting card when at home. The app is great as it knows what type of purchases you are making: Fuel, food etc.. so you can view at the end of the month how much you have spent. The exchange rates are good as money is sent from your own bank account. There are NO hidden charges that banks tend to charge when you transfer money while abroad. The Wise Card really has been our best friend, and we highly recommend setting up a Wise account for travelling overseas. It's fabulous! 👍

Wed, 19 Oct 2022 - 50min - 132 - Not YOU Again...The Pitfalls of Being Together 24/7
Imagine travelling with your spouse for six whole months.
Living together, working together, sleeping together. Skipping along the seashore holding hands. Discussing what brilliant ideas you can implement into your online businesses to generate even more cash.
What joy.
Laughing together. Planning together. Smooching below the stars...Never once saying "Why are you wearing THAT disgusting T-shirt again? I hate it. It's hideous." Or: "Oh, do me a favour will you and button it. Who do you think you are? My 'effing Mother?"
No. Never saying that. Uh-uh.
How To Stay MarriedBrian and I are used to being together. We've owned and run a handful of businesses, moved to the other side of the world, and built our own home. We even took our teenager's backpacking around the world for a year and never spent a day apart.
But that was different. Each of those experiences involved someone else. The kids. My mum. A friend, The builder. The dog. Anyone.
For the past five months, we have been travelling Europe. Me and Brian driving around the continent like Noddy and Big ears in our little red car. Just us. And now we are in Thailand. Just us. Spending five weeks in a swanky apartment. And it's very romantic.
Mostly.
I share this post because the last couple of days has been tense. Taut. Not taut as in perky and pert and attractive. But taut as in strangling and suffocating and rigid.
(Let's just say that we've exhausted Thailand's supply of Hong Thong Whisky).
So we thought we thought that we'd record a podcast. Sharing some of our excellent tips. On how we stay married.
Because after thirty-three years we are still going strong. Madly in love. And here's how we manage to do it...

f you have ever dreamed of visiting Thailand but have been put off because you've heard stories about how hard it is to travel in Asia (and let's face it we've all heard those stories), then you will love this podcast! Because taking a trip to Thailand is easy. Easy peasy. If we can do it, you certainly can.
Just know that you might have to prepare for a few teeny dramas...
Ready To Spend 5 weeks in Chiang Mai, Thailand?Liz and Brian are finally in Thailand. Living it up in the city of Chiang Mai.
Phew. They made it.
But not without a few hiccups. Such as being captured in the checkout line by two old biddy drug smugglers disguised as harmless grandparents for example. Bri suddenly developing Insomnia. Or causing the security guard's mouth to fall open when we showed up at the posh condo gate in a cattle truck...
Sit back, enjoy the show and please don't forget to spread the love. This can be done in a number of ways: Leave us a really nice review on your favourite podcasting app and say how flippin' brill we are. Share this podcast with someone who needs a little adventure in their life or email me at liz@itsadrama.com and let us know what value the show brings to you. OR...if you're really super duper why not do all three?!!

Fri, 07 Oct 2022 - 47min - 130 - She's Gone. Was it a Secret or a Lie?
Five months ago we picked up the little red car from England and drove it around Europe and the UK. And it was bliss. Pure heaven. Brian and I had the time of our lives. Just like Baby and Johnny black vest on the wet log.
But I won't lie. It's been a bit stressful. The car thing I mean.
As you might know, this little hatchback wasn't cheap (nineteen thousand pounds to be exact). She's a classic, you see. A little red vintage Peugeot 205 GTi that Bri bought for my birthday (let's not mention the fact that I've never even sat behind the effing steering wheel) and those things fetch big bucks. So every time we drove down a bumpy lane, and something went clunk or click or tick or tock, my initial thought was "Oh sh*t. There goes another grand".
I'm positive like that. I like to look on the bright side.
But I don't have to worry about that. Not anymore. Because as of yesterday...
In this week's show, Liz and Bri share what happened to the little red car (and whether they feel flush or broke). They also talk about Brian's dirty little secret, their next move to Thailand, the heartache of saying goodbye to loved ones and why when although they may trick people into thinking they things together, they constantly feel like a couple of old incontinent biddies with brains like goldfish.
Enjoy!

Thu, 29 Sep 2022 - 51min - 129 - Feeling Emotional. The Next Step
I can't quite believe it. For two years Brian has been secretly planning this mega trip to Europe. And now it's almost over.
Europe has been every bit as wonderful as we hoped it would be. Just gorgeous.
In case you're new to the show, let me give you a quick recap of what the past five months have looked like. The things you might have missed.
We picked up a vintage car from the UK in May (that Brian purchased off the internet while he was still in New Zealand) We drove through Belgium, France, and Italy and then got a ferry to Greece where we picked our kids up from Athens and sailed to the Greek Island of Paros for a month. The car had lots of niggly problems, but we won't go into that now. Bri feels fragile enough as it is.
The kids flew from Greece back to the UK, and we drove back through Europe to England. The car had some troubles. It blew up. I know that Brian will say that it didn't, but he's lying. It did.
We waited for the car to be fixed, visited lots of family members and then drove back to Tuscany to housesit for six weeks. We looked after a sweet little cat in a wonderful house overlooking the Mediterranean in the town of Porto Santo Stefano. It was divine. If you haven't yet signed up to be a housesitter, then you want your head reading. It's brill.
We drove back from Italy, over the French Alpes and are now sitting in our car outside an Airbnb in Calais making this podcast for you.
Tomorrow we will cross the border of France and return to England. The Queen has died, a close family member is not well, and if we can't sell the car in the next two weeks, then we stand to lose twenty grand. Oh, and it looks as though we will have to enter Thailand illegally.
Other than that everything is hunky dory.
Sit back, enjoy the show and please don't forget to spread the love and share this podcast with someone who needs a little adventure in their life!

Thu, 22 Sep 2022 - 52min - 128 - When Housesitting SUCKS
Nothing is perfect. Without fault, peachy keen, hunky dory.
Not even housesitting.
As much as Brian and I harp on about how wonderful our housesitting experience has been here in Tuscany, Italy (we have been housesitting in Porto Santo Stefano for the summer), there have to be some downsides. Right?
Right.
In this week's show, Brian and I will give you four reasons why Housesitting might NOT be for you. Four reasons why you might be better off in a hotel or at a campsite. (Don't forget what I said about the line of people in the hallway, that stuff is very real...)

Or is it??

Was San Gimignano worth the two-hour drive?
Feeling a bit ripped off
Americans abroad vs Brits abroad
Why this restaurant in a housing estate almost made Liz cry...

Ciao, Bella and welcome once again to Porto Santo Stefano in Tuscany, Italy where Liz and Brian are (still) currently housesitting for Six. Whole. Weeks.
I know. You don't have to tell them. They feel like that couple, Calvin and Zatera Spencer who won the lottery three times in one month.
In this week's soggy Italian podcast episode you will discover:
Why Italy came to a standstill for at least ten and a half hours.
Why some women look SO cool in cow boots while Liz on the other hand looks like a farmer in drag.
What Brian thinks about boats and why he nearly bit Liz's head off when she infers that he's really rubbish at...

Sat, 27 Aug 2022 - 35min - 125 - How We Are Staying in Italy for FREE. All About Housesitting...
Today, Liz and Brian lift the lid on the one thing that (apart from wine) they love more than anything in the world.
Housesitting.
As some of you know, we left New Zealand three months ago to travel around Europe in our little red car. We are currently in Porto Santo Stefano in Tuscany, Italy. Where we are staying for six weeks. And guess what?? It isn't costing us a penny. Not a cent. Not even a Euro. Nothing. Why? Because we are housesitting.
So far on this trip, we have housesat a cat in a beautiful old mill in Normandy. A dog in an ancient Chateaux in the Loire Valley and now here we are...looking after a very laid back and friendly pussy cat in Tuscany. In a home with million-dollar views of the Mediterranean.
Would you like to do the same? Would you like to know the inside secrets of Housesitting? Find out exactly how to travel all over the world and stay in fabulous houses for free? Right then, let's dive into the episode and let us reveal everything we know about our favourite topic of conversation - Housesitting!

This week's show is brought to you from Tuscany in Italy. Brian and Liz's home for the next six weeks while they housesit a superb home with a friendly little cat. I know. Quids in or what?
The thing with Italy is everyone thinks it is perfect. And it is. Of course, it is. I mean what's not to love about Italia?
The buildings are beautiful, the weather is lovely, the people are gorgeous, and the food is divine...
But what about those bloody pigeons? (why have the flying rats chosen THAT house?) And all those steps? And the fact that because the Italian restaurant owners are so strong and handsome and persuasive, you end up with an 80 euro bill when all you went in for was a bowl of olives??
Sit back and let Liz and Brian share a few things about Italy that might just surprise you...

A trait of being English is that one is very patriotic. One does not slag off one's country. Absolutely not. That's very un-English. So it was hard making this week's episode. Because we had to say how we felt about returning to England. And not all of it was pretty...
In this week's episode, we discuss exactly how it felt to return home to England (even though it's not home anymore). The things we (really) miss and the things that, for one reason and another, got right up our conks.

It was all going so well. We had just driven from England to Greece in our little red car, had the time of our lives in Greece, and were now ready to turn around and have more adventures in Europe.
And then it happened. The car broke down. Blew up. Bang. Kaput. Two miles outside of Calais.
Of course, we were devastated. Gutted. Panicked.
How would we continue our trip? How would we get back to Italy in time for our six-week housesit that we had committed to in Tuscany?
And more importantly...HOW MUCH would the repairs on our little red love bug investment cost us??

Mon, 04 Jul 2022 - 36min - 120 - Backpacking India (Is it as scary as everyone says it is?) PODCAST # 010
After spending seven weeks backpacking around India with my kids (teenagers age 16 and 13) I thought we should do a podcast on the country (and put to bed the silly myths that surround visiting India).
When I told people that we were planning a trip to India the response was...let's say colourful.
Some (mostly those who were born before the 1960s and had spent their youth discovering Asia on a couple of quid) encouraged us: 'you'll love it' they said and went on to talk about the beautiful Indian beaches or the temples in Hampi.
But others weren't so encouraging.
They warned us about getting sick and losing ten stone, said that we might get eaten by giant rats and be left for dead— or worse, pushed out into the river Ganges on a raft made from a billion plastic bottles.
Fri, 13 Dec 2019 - 29min - 119 - A New Zealand Christmas. Weird or Wonderful? PODCAST # 009
This week’s show comes after a long winter hibernation which included (for Liz at least) mainly cream, potatoes, belly pork and wine.
But. It is spring in New Zealand now and we are back and raring to go!
If you have ever dreamed of emigrating to Australia or New Zealand but spending Christmas in the sun seems a bit weird, then you will love this show!
In this episode, we…
Share the differences between Christmas time in New Zealand (Southern Hemisphere) and how that differs to the big day in the US/UK (Northen Hemisphere)
The pros and cons of spending Christmas in the sunshine and the big secret that anyone wishing to do Christmas time on the cheap should know about!
Wed, 04 Dec 2019 - 25min - 118 - Couch surfing as a Family (When It's Weird & Freaky) PODCAST #008
This week’s show is a continuation from Episode 5 - Couchsurfing as a family (how to save money).
After that show, we got lots of please for us to elaborate on the 'weird Italian host'.
Now.
Because I am very delicate and old, please don't go attacking me and say I should be grateful that this guy let four rag- bags sleep in his house.
I am; I was very grateful.
But. This guy was a bit...weird
Eccentric.
So we thought we'd share. That way, if you are considering couchsurfing with your kids (and you absolutely should - it's the best!) you might want to avoid this certain Italian host.
Unless your kids are harder than mine and like small wooden structures.
In this episode, we…
Talk about our very unusual couch surfing host that we experienced in Florence, Italy
Talk about Florence, alcohol, rabbits and toilets. Your mind must be boggling.
Tue, 26 Nov 2019 - 25min - 117 - Living in New Zealand. The Pros & Cons PODCAST #007
If you have ever thought about leaving your home country and emigrating, I bet New Zealand was on the short list. Since 2010, New Zealand has seen, amongst other nationalities, 10,000 Americans and 42,000 British get off the plane in Auckland or Wellington and prepare to spend their future living in New Zealand.
Some of those immigrants last only a few years; they decide that New Zealand isn't the place for them and head back home. Usually complaining that they can't get decent bacon.
But some, like us, stay and make 'the land of the long white cloud' their home.
My family (husband and two kids) have been living in New Zealand for the past nine years, we emigrated from the Uk in 2010 and now New Zealand is home. We all love it and are very happy here but there are a few things that can get on your nerves. Apart from the bacon.
This podcast is a discussion between Sonny and I where we look at what we like (and what annoys us) about living in New Zealand.
Sonny says a few things about New Zealand that I don't agree with (like the internet being rubbish?! I don't think it is) but that's the beauty of this Podcast; to get two different perspectives. One from a cocky young buck and the other from a stuck-in-her-ways- old biddy.

Wed, 03 Apr 2019 - 26min - 116 - How Expensive is it To Live in New Zealand PODCAST #006
We have decided to do a series of life in New Zealand and so this weeks podcast covered the basics on how expensive it is to live in New Zealand.
We have been living in New Zealand for ten years. We emigrated from the UK where we lived in the very posh (and bloody expensive) city of Bath.
If you are posh you have to say 'Barrth'. I always like to try my best.
We now live in the very down to earth, (although a little more expensive to live) region of Taranaki on the West Coast of the north island in New Zealand and we love it.
So many people comment on how New Zealand is expensive, and yes, compared to some places in the world (especially Asia) it is quite pricey. Like anywhere though, there are pros and cons of living in New Zealand, but generally, I think the cost of living is pretty reasonable.
Here's what we covered in the podcast:
We also talk about the cost of renting a house in New Zealand, particularly Taranaki, the region in the North Island where we live.
Last year we took the kids backpacking around the world for a year and rented our house out while we were gone. we charged $600 NZD a week which is $410 US and £315 GBP. Ours is a four-bedroom house in the country and we rented it fully furnished.
If you watch our latest vlog on the cost of living in New Zealand you will see how much new cars are but here's a rough average of what cars cost to run in New Zealand:
We then talked about the average wages in New Zealand which is $49,000 NZD that equates to $33,000 US and £25,000 GBP.
If you are a tradesman, a teacher, a nurse or a GP then listen to the podcast and I tell you how much you can expect to earn if you were to come to New Zealand and live.
We hope you enjoyed the show this week, as I said, this will be a series of life in New Zealand, how much things cost, the Pro's and Con's of living on the other side of the world and more!
If you like the podcast, please don't forget to rate us on iTunes and leave a comment over there - it helps our algorithm hugely!
See you next week,

Tue, 12 Mar 2019 - 26min - 115 - Couchsurfing. How To Travel The World For Free. PODCAST #005
This week, the podcast focused on Couchsurfing. We recently backpacked around the world with our kids for a year. Our budget was approx $75 a day for the four of us - which wasn't easy considering we have two gannets as teenagers.
This week on the podcast we explored the dark murky waters of Couchsurfing.
We recently backpacked around the world with our kids for a year. Our budget was approx $75 a day for the four of us - which wasn't easy considering we have two gannets as teenagers.
One of the ways we were able to stick to our budget was by Couchsurfing. In case you aren't familiar with this amazing organization, it is a website that pairs travellers - who are in need of somewhere to stay, with a host, who has a spare room, bed (or sometimes a couch) to offer.
We wanted to discuss the pro's and con's of Couchsurfing and to try and answer the most commonly asked questions that people have. Also, when I tell people that we took our teenagers to sleep on strangers couches they are quite rightly filled with doubt!
There is a misconception (which I too used to have) that Couchsurfing is for twenty-year-olds who are looking for a good time. Not true. And anyway, even when I was twenty I was still boring so that puts an end to that theory.
Some of the points that were raised were:
All of these questions and more were discussed, and hopefully, we convinced you that if you are looking to travel and haven't got much money (but you have got a great sense of adventure), then Couchsurfing really is the best.
There is a fabulous story that we touched on. We were in Italy and one particular Couchsurfing host was ...let's say 'eccentric'! I loved him, (because I am weird and slightly vindictive) but the kids were honestly terrified.
Seriously, they were never in any danger - they simply saw how one crazy Italian man lived his life. It was a brilliant experience. Anyway, have a listen to Sonny's interpretation of this and let me know if your teenagers would have felt the same.
If you would like to hear more about the crazy Italien then leave a comment and we will see to it!

Fri, 22 Feb 2019 - 31min - 114 - Part 2 How to Deal With Rejection When All You Want to Do Is Bawl Your Eyes Out #004
Episode four of the It’s a drama podcast was a tough one for both Sonny and me. This week we discussed the consequences of rejection from friends, how to deal with rejection and we also touched upon cyberbullying.
In the past month, we have both been the victims of social rejection and we thought it would be a good idea to see how it affects not just teenagers but adults too.
I won’t lie, it was hard for me to talk about on air. I was bullied badly as a young teenager, and the damage of that leaves me feeling very panicky and vulnerable if faced with confrontation. It is a lot easier for me to hide behind funny blog posts.
As it turned out, discussing what happened on the podcast was the best thing that I could have done. Afterwards, I felt as though I had been in a therapy session. As a side note, I have never had any kind of therapy, but after opening up to my son on this week’s podcast, I can totally see why people would seek out someone to talk to.
Sonny, it seems, is a natural podcast host. He is patient and intelligent, and I very much forget when I’m talking to him that he is indeed my son.
The same boy who hours earlier, I have been moaning at to tidy the breakfast dishes away.
This week’s podcast was so juicy and needed talking about in such depth that we decided to split the show into two and have a part 1 and part 2.
Part one sees us both laying down each of our experiences and touching briefly on how being rejected made us feel. Part two is the real gold.
I won’t give too much away, but just make sure you listen to part two to seek the answers you might need about how to deal with rejection and understanding this certain form of bullying.
As always, we would like to say thank you so much for your support. If you enjoy this podcast, please subscribe to us on iTunes and if you could leave us a short comment and rating that would help us enormously in reaching other people. ( iTunes is a fickle mistress. The more comments and subscribers a podcast receives, the further up the ladder of exposure you go.)

Thu, 31 Jan 2019 - 26min - 112 - How Long Term Travel Affects Your Family & Being Afraid To Travel #002
How Long Term Travel Affects Different Members Of The Family
This episode of the podcast is all about how families cope when they throw everything up in the air for a while and decide to go travelling with their kids.
I have had people say to me that their kids would be nervous about leaving their friends and home for a couple of weeks.
While we were travelling last year, my daughter got pretty homesick. She wanted her friends and her own bed which is understandable.
I worried myself sick over the fact that we had ruined her life forever and then, the following week, she turned around and said she was happy again and wanted to continue travelling. I don't know who I was madder at. Me for crying myself to sleep and worrying myself senseless or her for telling me in the first place!
A good lesson to learn here is that parents often worry about our kids for no reason. I know I do. We all do. And mostly it turns out to be a storm in a teacup.
We tried a different format for this podcast. We did a question and answer session. Three questions each.
I loved this podcast and as I mentioned above, the things that I would have said my kids were worried about turned out to be completely different to what I thought.
Just shows that we don't always know what's going on in that teenage brain.
I had a hard time returning back to real life and we discuss that too.
Before we closed the show, I asked Sonny what book he was reading at the moment. It was Pillars Of The Earth by Ken Follett
That's it from us for this week! I hope you enjoyed the show. Please comment below or send me a private message if there is a topic you would like us to talk about.
I'll do my best!

Tue, 22 Jan 2019 - 26min - 111 - It's a Drama Parenting Podcast. Why Do You Have Your Phone Strapped To Your Wrist? #001
Episode 1: I'm really very excited to be launching our very own /travel/lifestyle and parenting podcast for 2019.
It is something that I have dreamed of doing for a while but never had the time or the courage! Having my teenagers by my side will make me seem a whole lot more courageous than I really am and plus, it gives you a chance to hear things from a different perspective.
This is all very new to us so we will be trying out different things - be gentle with us and do me a favour? Email me with topics that you would like us to discuss. Please?
The first episode is us saying hello and talking about mobile devices, the pros and cons of why a kid needs a cell phone and how parents react to this.
A teenagers point of view and parents concerns. Are phones bad for our children? Is there any need to worry so much.
Some of you may know that teenagers and devises are my favourite subject - but how do kids feel?
I mess up straight away by introducing myself and then, before I know it, I am introducing Sonny too. That is something I will have to remember when doing this podcast - to keep my mouth shut and let my kids have their say!

Tue, 01 Jan 2019 - 23min - 110 - Greece? For a Month? How Much Does THAT Cost?
Would I be wrong in guessing that at some time in your life you've dreamed of spending a few glorious weeks in Greece with your family? An idyllic Greek Island vacation.
Have you spent time (sometimes hours) drooling at pictures on the internet of golden sand beaches and flat-roofed white houses that can only be found on an island in Greece somewhere in the middle of the Agean Sea?
You and me both.
I can't tell you how many times I have typed into Goggle 'what does it cost to spend a month on the Greek Island of Paros', only to be forced towards twenty million ads that never give me a straightforward answer.
Taking a Greek Island Vacation
As it happens, I am currently on holiday in Greece. I'm here with my husband and two young adult kids (notice how I called them 'young adults''? I have to do that. It's the law in our house. They don't talk to me for a week if they find out I've been calling them kids on the interweb).
And as I've been paying for things I've been clocking the price so that I can report back to you with prices.
So here we are. Brian and I. Your knights in Greek togas. Able and willing to share with you the exact cost of what a month in Greece will set you back.
How we came to be in Greece for a month.
Brian (my husband) and I have left our life in New Zealand and are currently travelling around Europe for three months. We bought a classic Peugeot 205 and we have driven it from England to Greece (where we have been for the last three weeks).
This was all planned by Brian in Lockdown. While I was busy bleaching the cups.
In this podcast episode, we share with you the exact cost of things in Greece. Including what a nice jug of wine will set you back.
I always remember the important things.
In This Week's Show Brian and I Discuss:
- Cost of accommodation in Paros, Greece Cost of a nice breakfast Cost of a budget breakfast Cost of wine in Greece Cost of mobile data (very important if you have a location-independent job like us) Cost of dinner for two Cost of public transport Things to note:
All prices are in Euros. At the time of writing this post 1 Euro = $1.05. 1.66 NZD. .86 pence
Flights from New Zealand to Greece cost us $1900 NZD per person return. This was with Emirates.
The prices mentioned in the podcast are what we found throughout the month of June 2022. June is shoulder season in Greece. Obviously, allow higher prices for accommodation if you are visiting in the peak season (July/Aug).

Mon, 20 Jun 2022 - 1h 08min - 109 - How We Afford To Travel The World
If we've heard it once, we've heard it a thousand times: How do you afford to travel the world? Are you rich? How do you afford to keep taking so much time off to travel? Why haven't you got a proper job?
Ohhh...I cannot wait to share this episode with you!
Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that we would be a couple who could say that we have location independent jobs and get paid while travelling the world.
Yet it seems that's exactly what we're doing.
It took five years to get to this point. From quitting our job, selling our business and renting our house out for a year to take our kids around the world, to now. Travelling Europe for six months in a classic car.
In this episode, Brian and I share the journey of how we did it. how we afford to travel and everything that this incredible adventure has given us (so far!).
Enjoy!
How We Afford To Travel The World
Becoming Location Independent
Being location-independent is a term that you usually hear thrown around by young hip travellers who know how to do flash things like providing cheap website design to companies in Silicon Valley.
Location Independence is not the kind of thing you tend to hear a married couple in their fifties bragging about.
Yet here we are. Me and Bri. Living the dream...
1: How, in 2017, we sat by our tent on a campsite in New Zealand, and read a book that changed our life.
2: Brian seeking his business (our only source of income). How much he made and how we spent the money.
3: Traveling the world with our kids for a year. How much it cost and what it was like.
4: Liz starting a travel blog (that she dreamed would one day help pay the mortgage).
5: Starting multiple businesses, including drop-shipping businesses.
Working will travelling. The realities.
7: How much money we earn on Youtube.
8: What we feel our future holds.
8: Our advice to anyone else wanting to do the same as we are doing and become location independent.
8: Our advice to anyone else wanting to do the same as we are doing and become location independent.

Last week, in behind-the-scenes podcast #8, I shared with you some of the very real fears that I have about leaving New Zealand to travel Europe for six months.
One of those fears is leaving my kids behind. In particular my 17 years old daughter, Tessa. As any parent knows, a lot happens in the life of a teenager. Multiple dramas arise. Drama's that, as a parent, one likes to be around to help navigate. Calm the waters. Guide them through.
For the first time ever in Tessa's life (and mine as a parent) I won't be here for her. And the thought of that (still) scares me.
In this week's behind-the-scenes podcast you will get a glimpse into the life of my daughter. You will see what goes through the head of this extraordinary seventeen-year-old girl as she grows up in New Zealand.
I hope that you love listening to her as much as I do. Enjoy.

Thu, 14 Apr 2022 - 36min - 105 - Swapping America for New Zealand. But was it all worth it?
Turning your back on the American dream for a new life in New Zealand.
Is it possible, for a couple in their late fifties to leave everything behind, move to the other side of the world and create a new life in New Zealand?
It certainly is. Not only is it possible but, according to some, it is what keeps you young and life exciting!
In this week's show, I talked with Sheri. Sheri was the director of a hospital in the USA. She and her husband Dan spent the past thirty years building a comfortable life together for themselves and their family.
And then two of her children moved to New Zealand and took the grandchildren with them.
So what did Dan and Sheri do? They stepped out of the American dream and they followed their hearts. They opted for an adventure. They started all over again.
This is their story.
Starting a New Life in New Zealand. The DetailsIn this week's show, Sheri talks about:
How she and her husband came to the decision to move to New Zealand Leaving her son and his children back in the USA Returning to being a bedside nurse in NZ after spending years as a director of a hospital Renting a home after years of being a homeowner How the move has affected her and her husband, Dan Working in a New Zealand hospital The positives and negatives of moving to New Zealand. If you are moving to New Zealand then you will love this show. It will also serve as a reminder of how important it is to surround yourself with like-minded people whenever you are about to tackle something as huge as moving to the other side of the world. You don't have to do it alone.
Sheri and Dan are valuable and treasured members of our private community (that we affectionately call the NZ Slackers!). The input that they offer to those going through this same journey is priceless.

Thu, 07 Apr 2022 - 52min - 104 - Quitting Canada to Retire in New Zealand. WHY??
I have heard it said many times that Canada is New Zealand on steroids. The mountains, the lakes, the beaches, the space. Canada has exactly what New Zealand has only it's...Canadian. So where should you live? Canada or New Zealand?
In this week's show, we are excited to introduce Randy and Suzanne, a couple who have lived together in Ontario Canada, for the past thirty years. Randy is Canadian and Suzanne is a kiwi. She was born in New Zealand, moved to Canada when she was seventeen years old. She met Randy, fell in love, and the rest is history!

Thu, 17 Mar 2022 - 27min - 101 - Americans Living in New Zealand. What The First 6 Months Are REALLY Like
Living in New Zealand. What The First 6 Months Were REALLY Like.
In this week's show, we are happy to welcome back Maile and Brian!
This American couple left the US almost six months ago to start a new life in Dunedin, New Zealand. They are happy with their decision (in fact, I have never met two people so in love with a country) but their journey certainly wasn't all plain sailing.
Enjoy!
Americans Living in New Zealand. The Highs (& The Lows). If you are moving to New Zealand from the USA then you will love this show.
No one can predict how they will feel when they move to another country. Maile and Brian certainly never expected to experience the flood of emotions that came within the first few months of arriving in New Zealand.
The thing that I love about this couple is their ability to talk things through. They are so very transparent. This openness is a gift to everyone out there thinking of making the same move to New Zealand.
How We Met Brian and MaileLast year, Maile had emailed me to say that she was thinking of moving to New Zealand and could I put her in touch with any other nurses who were doing the same.
Back then, we hadn't started the private New Zealand community that we now have, but I emailed Maile back and told her that I was about to do a podcast interview with Katie, a nurse who was in the process of moving to Dunedin.
A month or so later, when Brian and I created our NZ Ahead Membership Package (Formerly Moving to and Living in New Zealand Package), I contacted Maile and Brian and asked them if they'd like to join. They did and the rest is history!
A few months later Maile and Brian moved to Dunedin and in December 2021 Brian and I flew down to spend a few days with them.
The Importance of surrounding Yourself With like-minded People.Maile is a valuable and very treasured member of our private community (that we affectionately call the NZ Slackers!). The help that she offers to new arrivals and those thinking of moving to the country is priceless.
Maile goes that extra mile to help people (she has just helped Emil, a nurse from the Netherlands, land a job in the same hospital as her, he and his family will move here in a few months!). It is so very exciting to watch as people come together and help each other realise their common dream of moving to New Zealand.

Thu, 24 Feb 2022 - 53min - 99 - The FEARS Around Moving to New Zealand
There's a quote that I love: 'If it were easy then everyone would do it'.
This week, we are excited to share with you an extra special show. What you are about to hear is a podcast that was put together by the members of our private New Zealand Calling community. The subject is about their fears about moving to New Zealand.
This show is fabulous.
Wherever you are on your New Zealand adventure, whatever stage of the game you're in, this episode will put to rest those niggling fears and doubts and help you to understand that the thoughts that you are having are all part of the package. Completely normal. And usually unjustified.
Remember. If it were easy then everyone would do it.
A little back story...Last week I received an email from a guy. It said: 'I want to make the move to NZ but to be honest, there are so many fears that hold me back from pursuing my adventure, I can't ever see me making it.'
I am very grateful to that man for sending me that email as it gave me the idea for this week's show. And hopefully, he will go on to listen to this show and realise that he is not alone.
I reached out to our NZ private community and asked our members to share their biggest fears when it came to moving to NZ.
Here's what they came up with.
Moving to New Zealand Fears. The Biggest Ones. Leaving family and friends behind. Not having the support system for our children. Never getting any alone time as a couple as we won't have grandparents or other family members to look after the kids. Packing up my house and getting it ready to sell/rent. Not 'making it'. Losing my job when I get to NZ and having no support. Our children growing up and resenting us for taking them away to the other side of the world and away from their families. Making the wrong choice. Knowing that the 'doubters' were right.Thank you to each one of you for being so honest and open about fears. This episode will help a lot of people. Thanks guys x

- What’s the difference between private and public schools. Why would anyone pay for a private school in NZ? I’m only a trainee teacher in the UK so I won't have my credentials by the time we move. I do however have a learning and teaching foundation degree (equivalent to level 6 on the NZQA). What are the chances of me getting work within the education system while I hopefully finish off my teacher training in New Zealand. From a parent standpoint- do kids get homework at primary level, how often and when are they assessed? How structured is the school day/classroom, how much freedom do the kids have? Do they learn about wellbeing, mental health, citizenship, sex and relationship education and when? What support is there for pupils who are struggling, what stretch is there for able pupils? How (and how often) do schools communicate with parents? From a teacher standpoint - can you reasonably do your job within the working week or is it expected you will do many hours more? Is CPD (continuous professional development) encouraged/supported, are NZ schools collaborative places to work? Are teachers trusted and respected as professionals? What's the relationship like with parents? What are the frustrations and what are the best bits? How similar are schools - are they all variations on a theme, or do they all have their own "personality" so to speak? What's the resource situation - do schools provide all the resources, or are the staff expected to? Are NZ schools (I guess I'm thinking of high schools here really) cliquey for the pupils, or are they integrated and accepting? What do teachers do to help settle immigrant children? What are the typical differences between low and high decile schools in New Zealand?

Thu, 10 Feb 2022 - 1h 18min - 97 - New Zealand Borders to Open?! A Behind The Scenes Podcast
This week, Jacinda announced the news that so many of us have been waiting for. The New Zealand border will begin to open from February 2022.
The re-opening scheme is to be phased out over the coming year. Here is what the 5 step plan will look like:
The border will reopen to vaccinated New Zealand citizens and residents travelling from Australia at 11.59pm 27 February Reopens to New Zealand citizens and residents in the rest of the world on 13 March MIQ removed for most travellers in the phased reconnection, replaced by self-isolation and tests on-arrival Unvaccinated travellers, and those who do not meet New Zealand’s vaccination requirements, who are eligible to enter New Zealand will continue to enter MIQ. The five-step plan prioritises returning New Zealanders and brings forward the reopening of key visa categories from 13 March in order to address worker shortages. Further visa categories reopen throughout the year to help accelerate economic recoveryI don't know about anyone else, but this news brought a flood of tears. Many emotions came to the top. Some of which I wasn't aware even existed. And today, we'd like to share those emotions with you in this behind the scenes podcast.

Thu, 03 Feb 2022 - 34min - 95 - 8 Strange Laws in New Zealand (That make PERFECT sense) To Us.
It's true. There are some strange laws in New Zealand.
But not nearly as strange as some of those found in other countries. Take Mexico for example, it is illegal to kiss on the street in Guanajuato, while in the USA it is against the law to sell Kinder Eggs at the grocery store!
If you are moving to New Zealand or plan to travel to New Zealand when the borders open, then you are going to LOVE this show. You will discover three weird laws that have been passed in New Zealand and then learn about five more laws that Brian and I are considering taking to Jacinda for consideration.
To make Aotearoa much more fun...

Wed, 26 Jan 2022 - 32min - 94 - 7 Things You WON'T Miss When You Move To New Zealand
If you are thinking of moving to New Zealand from the UK (or elsewhere for that matter) and are concerned about a few things you may miss, you are going to really LOVE this show!
Last week, Brian and went on holiday. We stayed in a suburb of Dunedin called Port Chalmers. We loved it. Not only were we are away from the kids that never stop eating and the lawn that never stops growing, but we were able to explore one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand.
It was during this time in the South Island, that we realised there were some things, things that we'd been longing for these past twelve years, were right here under our noses. Imagine that.
Ready to find out what they are? Let's go!

Wed, 19 Jan 2022 - 34min - 93 - 2021 What a Year... Behind The Scenes With Liz & Brian
This is the last podcast of the year and we wanted to make it personal. So here we are! Behind the Scenes. In the bedroom.
To be honest, we could have made this podcast very easy. We could have just sat there and said thank you over and over again. That would have summed up our feelings for you right now. But because we like to natter over cherries we also go into the things that scared us the most this year, how we tackled them and where we are now.
Wherever you are in the world Brian and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you. So very, very much. Without you, we wouldn't keep going. You are a star. You are amazing.
All love

You may be thinking of moving to New Zealand and you are currently trying to decide which is best, the North Island or South Island. I'll always be a North island fan. But only one place on the North Island. Taranaki.
I love Taranaki so much that I dedicated an entire post to it. In that blog post, I give 16 reasons why we consider Taranaki to be the best place in New Zealand.
But today we are here to talk about the downsides of living on the far western tip of New Zealand's North Island. The pros and the cons.
In this week's podcast episode, Brian and I talk about:- Sun Rain Living remotely Tourism Sports Being too old to join in Festivals Being too mean to pay for them Black sand beaches Dangerous waters Café culture in Taranaki

Mon, 22 Nov 2021 - 50min - 90 - Lame or Lush? The Truth About New Zealand Food
New Zealand food. Not exactly the most talked about cuisine in the world.
Why? Is it because the kiwis are ashamed of their national nosh or are they hiding something from the rest of the world?
When we made our move to New Zealand from the UK twelve years ago, I wasn't expecting much in the way of food. Maybe a few lamb chops and a packet of butter. A glass of milk at a push.
How wrong I was...

Like everything else in New Zealand, the food is rather underrated.
Which is a shame as it leads people to believe that the New Zealand food is either boring and not worth mentioning, or is so weird that it must only be eaten by people who reside in mud huts and cook dinosaur eggs. (One of the many misconceptions about New Zealand).
People in our private New Zealand community will often ask, is the food in New Zealand better?
That's a tricky one. It depends where you come from and what you class as better. I am from England and although this doesn't apply to all food, I'll stick my neck out and say that the majority of New Zealand food is waaay better than the UK.
In this week's podcast episode, we talk about 13 Foods in New Zealand, including:- Mince on toast Vogel bread Cheese Kumera Hāngī Paua Kina Kiwi burger Mussels Chocolate Pavlova Asparagus sarnies Pies

Brian and I thought it would be fun to share seven kiwi BIG no-no's in this week's show. That way, when you eventually get off the plane in Aotearoa, you can get on with the good stuff. Like making friends with hobbits and climbing snow-peaked mountains.

It's such fun researching new countries, especially such wondrous places like New Zealand.
Before you arrive in the land of the long white cloud, there are a few essentials that'll make your experience easier—learning a bit of the New Zealand slang, for example—knowing your chooks from your chocks. Getting a sneak-peek into typical New Zealand people; finding out what makes them tick. All that kind of stuff.
But what about the things that you SHOULDN'T do?? What if you ask a question in a busy kiwi bar and suddenly hear a pin drop?

Wed, 27 Oct 2021 - 38min - 86 - Typical New Zealand People. 4 Stereotypes (That May Be Getting Old)
If I were asked to describe what typical New Zealand people are like, the last word that would come to mind would be 'rugged'. Yet, apparently, according to the people on the washing line, this is a label that goes hand in hand with the folks down under.
In this weeks show, Brian and I thought it would be fun to take four of New Zealand's national stereotypes and discuss whether we found them to be true...

Typical New Zealand People. Just WHAT Are They Up To Down There?I can just picture it.
A bearded bushman with a wild pig slung over his shoulder. Returning home to his wife (who is making scones with one hand and shearing sheep with the other). 'Throw that on the Barbie love and while it's cooking I'll neck a few tinnies with the boys...'
Did I ever mention to you that, twelve years ago, I got cold feet about moving to New Zealand? It's true. I had visions of turning up to the country and finding men who spent hours drinking and polishing their fishing rods and women who wore blue overalls.
Luckily I put my big girl pants on and went ahead with our plans. And while some things (like learning the New Zealand slang) took some getting used to, I am happy to say that I am yet to meet any troglodytes.

Tue, 19 Oct 2021 - 36min - 85 - Living in New Zealand. 7 Things That (STILL) Baffle Us!
You'd think that after living in New Zealand for 12 years we'd have adjusted to the kiwi ways. And we have. To most things.
But not all.
We moved to New Zealand from England in 2009 and it was the best move that we have ever made. We have raised our kids in a country that embraces innovation and creativity, and have been warmly welcomed by the wonderful New Zealand people.
But. There are times when we are reminded that this is not Kansas. That we still need to work a little harder to truly fit in. Whenever these seven events show up in life down under, we realise that try as we may, we are still adapting to life in New Zealand.
Here are the seven culprits that still baffle these two slow learning brits...

Thu, 14 Oct 2021 - 27min - 84 - Behind The Scenes #6. Feeling Fear. Having Courage
It's on days like this that I tend to reminisce. Go back in my mind ten years to when Brian was working in his plumbing and heating business and I was at home with kids, doing my best to provide them with a rounded education.
Through my rose-tinted glasses, I see a calm and harmonious family who had a regular wage popping through the door every week. A life where the mother felt no need to put herself onto Youtube and make big fat mistakes in front of the world.
And then I take the glasses off and wipe them. And I remember that fear was always present.
There was the fear of some stuffing up my kid's life by homeschooling them. Fear of Brian drowning in the pool of stress that filled his fifty-hour workweek. Fear of using cling film when the whole world had adopted that rubbery Honeywrap organic stretchy stuff. Fear of doing things differently.
Fear. Loads of fear.
This week's podcast was made to inspire you. To encourage you to move forward with whatever it is you are doing. Even if (especially if) that thing is causing you to wobble and shake.
Last week a friend reminded me of the Mark Twain quote:
Courage is not the lack of fear. It is acting in spite of it.
Another quote that I shall be using often came from my husband, Brian Deacle
Have courage. Trust in yourself.
Enjoy.

Mon, 11 Oct 2021 - 36min - 83 - Is New Zealand NEGLECTING These 7 (Essential) Life Skills?
New Zealand is often referred to as being, 'like England was fifty years ago.' At first, I wasn't sure what this statement meant but after living in New Zealand and witnessing the life skills and the values that New Zealand people work hard to retain, the expression became a whole lot clearer.

Life Skills. Are They Being Lost in New Zealand?A survey compiled by Melbourne's Monash University found that New Zealand families would like their children to be taught basic life skills in school.
But what are the feels down on the ground? (Sorry, trying to sound cool but it failed. I promise not to do it again).
In this weeks show we thought we would give you our opinion on whether we think the New Zealand people are retaining (and passing on) valuable life skills to the younger generation or if they are watching helplessly as the good stuff gets washed down the drain.
In this week's podcast episode on New Zealand Life Skills Brian and I talk about:- Manners and etiquette. Fixing and maintaining cars. Communication skills. Particularly in the younger generation. The way that New Zealand kids are raised is different from say, the UK. Household chores and why they matter in New Zealand. Toilet matters (admit it, your mind is boggling). Technology, how advanced ARE the New Zealand people? Re-cycling, clothing and fixing.
