You’ve Gotta Be You! Season Two - Episode 28 "It's only me who's responsible for what I do and how I get there.” – Laurie Schmidt In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Laurie about: How a series of perceived failures had her doubting herself The desire to remain authentic to herself is a driving force in her life Working for some bad leaders gave her a view of who she didn’t want to be as a leader Key Takeaways The importance of positivity in your life. We are all going to make some mistakes in life, learn from those mistakes. Don’t be afraid to take some risks. Treat others as you want to be treated. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Laurie Schmidt is an expert in the Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO) space. She has 17 years of experience managing recruitment teams and serves as a strategic partner to her clients by finding the right talent for their teams. Currently, Laurie is the Client Services Director for Cielo, the world's leading strategic Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO) partner. Cielo is committed to helping their clients attract and hire better talent faster, all while providing a world-class candidate experience. Laurie has also worked as a corporate recruiter for companies such as Schneider National, WE Energies, GE, Manpower, and Johnson Controls. Throughout her career and personal life, Laurie has had numerous experiences that have molded her into not just a survivor, but a “thriver.” She lost her job three times due to poor fit, eliminations, and the economic downturn in 2009 (where she spent 10 months unemployed). She also struggled with two marriages that resulted in divorce. Despite facing such adversity in her life, Laurie chose to learn and grow from those experiences. She realized there are “things” in life that are out of our control. We choose how we will respond to those situations. We choose if we will let these obstacles consume us or if we will rise above. Laurie chose the latter and allowed those experiences to guide her toward her authentic self. During her search for her authentic self, she has built a strong career as an enthusiastic leader who is transparent, holds people accountable, and helps others to realize their potential. Recently, she celebrated her eighth wedding anniversary by choosing to stay true to what is important to her in her marriage. She believes that when people connect to their authentic selves and lead from a place of honesty, their lives naturally improve and become more fulfilling in all areas. Baking is Therapy Season Two - Episode 25 "I'm always where I need to be when I need to be there." – Jobea Murray In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Jobea about: From Crocs, Inc. to Jobea Bakes, LLC, home-based baker Kids Impact Community, where kids of all ages get involved in their communities through volunteer work What it's like to be a mom, a business owner, and a community volunteer/leader Key Takeaways Listen to the universe and what it brings to you – You are where you need to be when you need to be there It's never too early to begin teaching children about volunteering in their communities Don't be afraid to follow your dreams Jobea Murray – From engineering, to helping make Tinkerbell fly, to driving a box truck full of Crocs across the country, and living overseas. All these things have given Jobea a desire for knowledge and a sense of adventure in her life and very little risk of failure (for better or worse!) After 15 years in retail management and operations, a move back to the US from living in Singapore, and the birth of her first child, (phew!), Jobea made the decision to follow her passion for baking. She always loved to bake, but during her years living overseas, she realized that it was also a form of therapy for her. Knowing her extensive retail experience gave her the knowledge and ability to run a business, and she wanted to advance her baking skills. Jobea studied Baking and Pastry Arts at Escoffier School of Culinary Arts, receiving her degree shortly after my daughter's 1st birthday. Jobea then started her first business, Smash-A-Cake, in Colorado in 2014. While making her child's first smash cake, she realized that this was something other parents might appreciate, an adorable, one-of-a-kind smash cake for their little one. Plans changed, however, when she and her family moved across the country and their second child was born. Due to restrictions in the state of Wisconsin, the business was put on hold. But Jobea is not the type of mom to sit at home with young children, so they jumped into social activities like storytimes and exploring our new city. They quickly found Toddlers on a Mission (now Kids Impact Community) and knew they had all found the supportive, empowering group they were looking for. Through the engaging and creative community service projects designed for even the youngest of participants, they integrated service into something they now do as a family. Jobea quickly saw the need for behind-the-scenes support for the organization beyond the monthly activities, and she volunteered to be the communications manager, setting up systems and processes to help the organization grow and expand. In January of 2019, Jobea relaunched her cake business. By this time, her kids were starting school, and she had more freedom to find a new direction. She wanted to find her design style, build clients strategically, and most importantly to find a balance between work and life that fit her family. While creating a supportive local baking community and continuing to promote and support Kids Impact Community, she became the President of the Board of Directors. Most recently, Jobea has become a founding member of the Wisconsin Cottage Food Association, and she is working closely with some inspiring women to advance cottage baking in the state and nationwide. BONUS Episode – International Women's Day – Will you help #BreakTheBias? Episode 20 "Cheers that women have made a little progress in the past few years in getting a few more women into senior-level roles. But at the rate we're going, it's going to take another 400 years to reach a state of equality." – Holly Teska In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk about: It's not just about being a woman. It's also about bringing other aspects of diversity to the workplace and being accepted. Bias is everywhere. The added burden of intersectionality. How we define "executive presence" and what that means in judging others. How the notion of cultural fit has been damaging to the advancement of women. And more! Key Takeaways The one thing we can control is how we think about others. Each of us doesn't have to set out the change the world ourselves. Just commit to doing something to facilitate the change we need to see. "Maya Angelou says we all have a story within us, and it's sad if we don't share it." – Deb Crowe In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Deborah about: How she was forced to grow up on a nanosecond when her dad passed away at the age of 54 and Deb was only 21 years old. The story of a VP at her very last job who took her out for lunch one day. He told her she was losing her job at five o'clock. And he wanted to treat her for lunch because he wanted to tell her, "it's nothing you've done." Her poor manager chose not to see the leader in her and foster and help her grow in our company. He was a heart-centered leader. He inspired her to go out start her own business. It's been hard, but it's been worth it because she has been in charge of herself ever since. The many inflection points in her journey to doing the work she loves today. Key Takeaways Deb's definition of heart-centered leadership is honoring your connection with people. When you look at your work, people have to come before the paper. People are the paper. People are the processes. People are the protocols, the regulations. Everything comes down to that intrinsic value. Recognize that we're not pizza, not everybody likes us. We're like coriander. We're a little bit spicy, but we're not for everybody. Life is too short not to try to follow your dreams. Deborah Crowe is an executive and business coach and CEO. She has 30+ years of global experience in top Fortune 500 companies in Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia, leading and coaching C-suite leaders, executive and senior management professionals, and their teams. Deborah started her company in 1990 and knows how to get to the top, hold that senior position, and integrate career and family. In her coaching practice, she provides the tools, strategies, programs, and support to help create meaningful change in their lives. Deborah prides herself on leading as a heart-centred leader who thrives on helping people become successful and fulfilled. Deborah has had the same challenges her clients face. She is remarkably familiar with the pressure of job deadlines, trauma, family obligations, and inadequate feelings. She has been there. Done that and knows that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel, even if it is dim. The hardest part is starting. Deborah's goal is to help people and organizations create an experience they envision and coach them to achieve their dreams, goals, and aspirations. Make Life More Joyful Episode 17 "You should have a life you love. Let's uplift women and do great things. Make life more joyful." – Sheila Long In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Sheila Long about: Her decision to start her own business after she decided to leave the world of big corporate America to focus on family. How Sheila began to get acclimated to a new city and make friends and contacts that would later be so important to her beginning her business. The power of women helping women to succeed. Key Takeaways There are so many issues in society, and women play a crucial role in moving forward on these issues, especially when they unite. As a society, we do not celebrate women taking risks like we do men. Women working with other women helps make that easier for would-be women entrepreneurs. Find your tribe of women or a personal board of directors when launching a business or re-inventing yourself. Your loved ones don't want to see you fail and may hold you back in the interest of trying to protect you from all the unknowns and possible failure. People outside your immediate circle can give you the feedback you need most. Be open to admitting you can't do everything and reach out for help. Hire an accountant or virtual assistant to allow you to focus on the work you do best. Sometimes it's hard to trust that someone else will do it as well as you. Sheila Long is the Founder of MalamaDoe, A Coworking Community for Women in Shorewood, Wisconsin, that she began in 2015. Sheila believes in inspiring awesome women to get connected professionally. She facilitated her local Project Management Institute Expert Panel for many years while holding various roles on local boards. Prior to consulting, Sheila worked for over eleven years at Motorola in high tech sales, quality, and service management. Sheila received her MBA in Strategy and Finance from the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago. She earned International Business, Economics, and Spanish degrees from Saint Louis University where she enjoyed four semesters on their campus in Spain, fine-tuning her cultural knowledge. Sheila currently resides in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, with her three children. Whenever she's not creating change for the betterment of women's careers, you can find Sheila connecting and building communities while expanding her cultural knowledge, learning a new language, and obsessing over healthy eating. MalamaDoe's Mission Everything we do revolves around making this world a better place by helping women use their talents to be the best they can be. We believe women who are empowered by one another and role models build community, help society, and flourish. We showcase great female role models building community one woman at a time. We help women take supported and calculated risks to develop their talents personally and professionally. We inspire women to get connected professionally by branding themselves, marketing their talents, and promoting themselves and others. We cater to women with their own businesses who are taking supported and calculated risks by aiming high and looking for growth – all in areas that showcase their talents. In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Terri Herrmann & Kurt Heikkinen about: Being true to who you are Mind, body, spirit health and using the power of these three things together. Surrounding yourself not only with those who uplift you, but also those who will challenge you When we listen more than expressing our own thoughts, great ideas come forward Key Takeaways Take care of yourself and find balance in the mind, body and spirit. Whatever spirituality means for you, it is at the center of life. Find it and engage in feeding this piece of yourself. Servant leaders work together as a team. Be intentional about culture – values, operating disciplines and characteristics. Balance the “how” with the results. Sometimes organizations focus solely on the results and miss the power of the “how.” They miss the powerful foundation where businesses thrive. Don’t be afraid to share your fears with those you trust. They can help you. Terri Herrmann is the co-founder of CharismaQ - a coaching and communications platform to evaluate, coach, and create charismatic people. Terri believes that behind every great brand is an even better story. She knows that true financial success happens when you have the confidence to live your own personal brand and communicate the “story of you.” Terri has partnered with sales teams to exceed revenue goals, and she’s led the launch of three major brands to the market. However, what really drives and inspires Terri is creating meaningful connections and making a difference. Whether that is through leading and growing teams, creating brand advocates, launching and promoting new products to the market, or building an opportunity pipeline - her best work is tied to a greater purpose. Before starting a business on April 1st, 2020, during a pandemic, Terri spent her entire career leading sales and marketing teams for ManpowerGroup, Runzheimer, Montage, and Modern Hire. After 20 years of sales and marketing success, Terri knew her purpose was to build a business. A business that teaches teams how to show up with confidence and charisma to accelerate performance. Terri is a Wisconsin native and a UW Whitewater alum. She lives in Richfield with her husband, two children, and their 12-pound dog, Ellie “Ninja” Herrmann. Sharing Belly Hugs Season Two - Episode 15 "When I think of my Dad’s lasagna, I get all the warm fuzzy feelings of being in my childhood home with my family.” – Hollie Mealy In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Hollie about: How Hollie went from full-time teacher to part-time teacher, to President and founder of a 501c3 (non-profit) The challenges and victories in starting a not-for-profit organization Setting a ten-year goal and achieving it far ahead of schedule What’s next for Right Relief Inc. – listen in to hear the dream! Key Takeaways Don’t let your doubts get in the way of trying something you believe in Don’t be afraid of being told no, things do not always go smoothly Ask for help Use your connections Hollie Mealy is the President and founder of the Nonprofit The Right Relief Inc. based in Menomonee Falls and serving Caregivers in the Milwaukee area. Starting in September of 2019, Mealy and the #ReliefSquad (Right Relief volunteers) began making meals for local Caregivers who were caring for loved ones in their homes. Caregivers could be helping anyone from an elderly parent to a newborn baby. Group meals also began at both Kathy’s House and Ronald McDonald House prior to Covid. Mealy set a goal of 5,475 meals (or belly hugs!) in total. This number is in honor of her late Father, Rob, and is the number of meals the family shared together during Mealy’s childhood growing up in Peshtigo, WI. Diane (her mother) and Kellie (her sister) were both caregivers for Rob for several years and Hollie witnessed the extreme love and support they both put into making sure his needs were met. This often led to their own needs going by the wayside. Everything I have experienced, makes me who I am today and helps me offer the value that I do to the clients that I work with.” – Dr. Wilma Slenders In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Dr. Wilma about: Realizing that university wasn’t easy led her to begin her career in physical education… because she was good at it! The importance of understanding what you do well and finding ways to dive deeper and try new things, even if they aren’t comfortable. As a girl and young woman growing up, she never felt there was anything she couldn’t do. It wasn’t until she experienced sexism and discrimination that she realized maybe SHE could do something about these issues. Her calling is to create awareness and take action. Discrimination and sexism are not women’s issues… they are people issues. The devasting impact that COVID-19 has had on women in the workplace. Key Takeaways Companies are going to need to make some changes if they want to keep women engaged in the workforce. The new virtual world has made it easy to be invisible. If women don’t want to be overlooked for opportunities they need to create greater visibility for themselves. Women need to advocate for themselves and one another. Together women are stronger. COVID is requiring companies to re-evaluate the old social work rules. Work is becoming more about outcomes than time in a chair and systems need to evolve to support the new world of work. Wilma J. Slenders, PhD, is the President and founder of Transcend Management Advisors Inc., a consulting and coaching firm established in 1997. Dr. Slenders has worked with C-level executives for over 25 years, consulting to their organizations, coaching them to be better leaders, and serving as a trusted advisor. Wilma’s professional career includes international consulting roles, executive leadership in not-for-profit organizations, and being a university faculty member. She is the founder/cofounder of four successful businesses in four industry sectors. Wilma is known for her pragmatic, business results focus which has resulted in a proven record of success in enabling personal transformation, as well as large scale transformational change in organizations. As a speaker, consultant, and coach, she asks provocative questions, challenging individuals to think beyond their paradigms. The Ultimate Gift Episode 12 "Thirteen people die daily waiting for an organ.” – Laurie Lee In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Laurie Lee about: Laurie’s early career experiences that led her and her husband to start their own business. Her dad’s life-saving liver transplant and her journey into the world of living organ donation. A beautiful story of gratitude and paying it forward. Laurie’s organ donation documentary with living donors telling their stories on stage. Many describe “the calling” as a lightening strike. Key Takeaways The amazing feeling that comes with saving someone’s life. The Kidney Champion Program helps patients seeking organs on how to conduct a social media campaign to find a donor. It’s an effective way to find an organ. People want to know that they are going to be okay if they make a living organ donation and to know that it’s not going to impact their health in the future. The cost of the organ donation is covered by the receiving patient’s insurance and there are many other resources available to make sure there is no financial impact to the organ donor. Laurie Lee, is from Hawthorn Woods, IL, and now lives in Algonquin, IL with her husband Rob Lee. Her passions include her family & friends, adventure travel, SCUBA diving, her pets, her business Swift Passport Services , the outdoors, and transplant. Laurie is a non-directed kidney donor whose donation sparked a 6-person transplant chain on Nov 22, 2016. She was compelled to become a donor after her father, Dan Dickinson, received a lifesaving liver transplant in 2011. Laurie is one of the original members of Northwestern Medicine’s Transplant Advisory Council, that powers Transplant Village. Transplant Village is an inspired group of organ recipients, donors and their families is united in their mission to support the future of organ transplantation at Northwestern Medicine while connecting and supporting the transplant community. Her main role with Transplant Village is facilitating a monthly workshop called the Kidney Champion Program which teaches people who are in need of a kidney different strategies to attract a living kidney donor. Laurie enjoys working on projects in the transplant world that make an impact! She was one of the organizers of the 2018 Donor Rally which resulted in a Guinness World Record for the largest number of Living Organ Donors (410!) in one place. She is currently wholeheartedly invested in CrowdSource for Life and is a producer for a docuseries called Abundant which explores the concept of abundance through stories of non-directed organ donation. She believes this project is the catalyst that our society needs right now to pay attention and to take action, so that people don’t have to die or suffer waiting for an organ transplant. Her podcast, Donor Diaries, was developed to support this project and it’s initiatives. Laurie is extremely interested in connecting with people who share her interest in flooding the donor pool, so that nobody has to wait for a life-saving transplant. Allow people to be who they are and try to understand where they are at."— David Topp In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with David, Lauren, Leah, and Sydney Topp about: Being an advocate for women and girls – three beautiful examples of strong young women taking their place in the world. The importance of allowing people to be themselves and shine in the world. How David’s daughters have been supported by their mom (Lisa) and dad – and the importance of partnership in leading family and those you lead in the world and workplace. Key Takeaways Women of all ages need strong, supportive men in their lives to sponsor them and lift them up in the world and help pave the way to success. Learn to listen from the other person’s point of view. We don’t have all the answers ourselves. Be conscious and have an understanding of your own personal biases. Be transparent with others who are different and seek to understand each other's world and point of view. It will make you a better person and a better leader. Men also need women mentors and sponsors to help them better understand the world from the female perspective. Having a safe space that encourages open dialog is tremendously beneficial to see the world from many different vantage points. Do what you want to do and be yourself… do what makes you happy… don’t be afraid. There is support out there. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. David Topp, is currently the Chief Human Resources Officer at Sterling Pharma Solutions where he has global responsibility for the company’s human resources function. In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Deborah Shames about: Early career experiences that created the platform for Deborah’s commitment to showing up confident and polished. It wasn’t an easy road for Deborah either! An amazing story of commitment and courage. Deborah’s passion for helping others (and especially women) feel confident, prepared, and competent in their roles as executives, leaders and entrepreneurs. The secrets to being “memorable” when you present. The things women need to let go of to show up as confident, competent and authentic. Key Takeaways When you need to address an audience or present a topic, always know your intention. Right before you present, review your intention for the meeting or presention, not the content. Never write out, read or memorize your content as this comes across as inauthentic Pick only three items that you want to cover in your content as this makes remembering content easier and doesn’t overwhelm your audience with too many messages. Deborah Shames, Prior to co-founding Eloqui with David Booth, Deborah was an award-winning film and television director. She founded the only female owned production company in the San Francisco Bay Area-- Focal Point Productions, which she ran for 15 years. Audrey Denecke, President & Founder of Threshold Change, heard her clarion call to what would become a career in ushering leaders and organizations through change at ten. She experienced a moment that shook her young sensibilities to the core. Hear Audrey describe when she first discovered and bristled against the ways men and women were treated differently. After that day memorable day, Audrey would repeatedly tell the story of her distress and sense of unfairness to anyone who would listen. The explanations given did not match her emerging barometer for just treatment. Early adult experiences led to her involvement in social justice causes, including women's employment rights (and other issues). She grew as a leader and became adept at marshaling change in coalition with others. Audrey's focus is now on guiding change at the individual, team, and whole-system level within corporations and other organizations. As a coach, she has partnered with hundreds of leaders through individual coaching, team coaching, and related assessments. She partners with leaders to expand their capacities, effectively navigate, and lead their teams and divisions through changing circumstances. Audrey holds an M.S. in Organizational Development (Loyola University/Chicago, IL) and a B.A. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology (Mundelein College Chicago, IL | Loyola University). She is a certified and experienced professional leader coach. In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Audrey Denecke about: Her young awakening to the inequality between men and women A passion for social justice sparked in unplanned and surprising places Remembering the past challenges, wins, and future issues for women Becoming an activist for the causes you believe in Key Takeaways Audrey encourages all women to understand the issues, get involved, be self-aware, do their best work at something they love and are passionate about, and above all, BE BRAVE.
