Some serial killers develop a kind of calling card throughout their rein of terror such the “Night Stalker” Richard Ramirez leaving a bloody pentagram or the “Son of Sam” David Berkowitz leaving handwritten letters. Serial killer Charles Albright, a native Texan, left his own unique calling card as well. During the early 90’s in Dallas, Texas, Albright killed a string of female sex workers and removed his victims’ eyeballs with surgical precision. Throughout his life, Charles Albright had been described by many who knew him as happy, untroubled and troubling no one. Per Texas Monthly, “He was, they said, a kind of Renaissance man—fluent in French and Spanish, a masterful painter, able to seduce women by playing Chopin preludes on the piano or reciting poetry by Keats.”So, what would cause a man who was so polite and charming to become such a sinister killer later in life.

Cash App-Mon, 22 Apr 2024 - 98 - Episode 98: Are Serial Killers Made or Born
From July of 1976 to July of 1977, one of America’s most notorious serial killers, David Berkowitz, better known by his moniker, The Son of Sam, swept panic through the streets and boroughs of New York City with a murder spree that captivated the nation and ignited a media frenzy. Over the course of that year, in three of the city’s boroughs, Berkowitz, using a.44 caliber Bulldog revolver randomly shot New York citizens, leaving six dead and seven wounded. He left handwritten letters at some of the crime scenes, in which he taunted and insulted the police for their fruitless efforts to capture him and expressed his determination to continue his work. Berkowitz’s deadly shooting rampage spawned one of the biggest manhunts in New York City’s history, ending in August of 1977, with the capture of the 24-year-old, finally putting to rest New York City’s notorious “summers of fear”. Berkowitz’s confessed to the string of brutal attacks claiming that he had received orders to kill from his neighbor Sam Carr, which had been communicated through Sam’s black Labrador retriever that had become possessed by a 6,000-year-old demon. Despite Berkowitz’s story of devils, demons, and possession, numerous psychological evaluations declared him “competent” to stand trial. So, was The Son of Sam just a sinister mind who had a lust for killing or was he suffering from serve mental health issues that had been the catalyst into creating a serial killer.

Cash App-Mon, 08 Apr 2024 - 96 - Episode 96: The Taco Bell Serial Strangler
The most infamous serial killer in the history of North Carolina is that of Henry Lewis Wallace, also known as “The Charolette Strangler or “The Taco Bell Killer. During the early-90’s Wallace murdered nearly a dozen black women, who almost all had one thing in common, they knew him. For several years he remained at large, causing hysteria in the city of Charolette, especially amongst the minority community where a large number of the murders had taken place. A lack of adequate police patrolling in that area of Charlotte and the fact that the police were simply not equipped in handling a serial killer, allowed Wallace’s rampant murdering spree to continue for so long. He would eventually be caught and during his confession, explained how he raped and strangled each of his victims to death, even attending some of his victims’ funerals. When Wallace was finally convicted of raping and murdering 10 black women, he was sentenced to death, where he still remains on death row. So, what would cause such a sinister mind to commit such horrific murders.

In December of 2010, along a remote stretch of sand on the South Shore of Gilgo Beach in Long Island, New York, a police officer and his dog would discover human remains while searching for a missing woman. Just a few days later, the police would find the remains of three other women. Like the first victim, they were petite, in their 20s and worked as escorts. In the following weeks, six other bodies were discovered, including that of a man and a 2-year-old girl who have never identified. The discovery of the bodies terrified residents of Long Island and led to a 12-year investigation marked by dysfunction, disarray and even corruption. For a decade, the police did not seem to have a single suspect or person of interest and refused to discuss the case. In February of 2023, DNA would link Rex A. Heuermann to the first four women's remains that were found. Heuermann lived in Massapequa Park, Long Island, about a 20-minute drive from Gilgo Beach where the bodies were discovered. So, could Rex Heuerman be responsible for other sinister crimes?

The first public arrest through genetic genealogy was the April 2018 identification of the suspected "Golden State Killer." Since then, genetic genealogy has helped identify more than three dozen suspects in violent crimes, with one of those being the murder of Pamela Cahanes. In August of 1984, Orlando Navy recruit 25-year-old Pamela Cahanes was found beaten and strangled to death in Sanford, Florida. Almost 40 years later DNA and genetic genealogy would link Thomas Lewis Garner, a former naval classmate of Pamela’s, to her 1984 murder. Garner was arrested and convicted of Pamela’s murder. However, tis would not be his only killing. In 2021 he was linked to the death of 25-year-old Kathy Hicks who was murdered in September of 1982. So, could Thomas Lewis Garner be responsible for other unsolved murders.

Laura had last been seen alive in the early morning hours before her murder, entering her apartment alone after a night out with a friend. Between1986 and 1989 on or near a scenic drive that connects Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown in southeastern Virginia, two double homicides occurred with a third believing to have taken place, but those bodies have never been found. The killings were suspected to be the workings of a serial killer. Sadly, investigators were unable to apprehend the culprit and the slayings now known as the "Colonial Parkway Murders” went cold. Between those years, in the 1987, 20-year-old David Knobling and 14-year-old Robin Edwards were found fatally shot near the south bank of the James River in Isle of Wight County of Virgina. Unfortunately, this case went cold too. Also in 1989, another unsolved murder occurred in Hampton, Virginia. Although there are similarities in the Isle of Wight County homicides, the Hampton homicide and those of the “Colonial Parkway Murders, at the time, there was no forensic or physical evidence to link to those murders together. However, over 40 years later police have named a suspect in the Isle of Wright County murders as well as the Hampton one too. So was this sinister mind also responsible for the “Colonial Parkway Murders”.

The death of the young boy is one of Philadelphia’s most famous unsolved murders with the case having become known as the “Boy in the Box.” For decades this cold case has baffled Philadelphia police who over the years have pursued thousands of leads in search of the child’s identity and those responsible for his death but have continually come up empty handed. Well, that was until 2022, thanks to genetic genealogy testing and some good old-fashioned detective work, the victim has finally been identified as four-year-old Joseph Augustus Zarelli. Unfortunately, though, investigators have yet to uncover who is responsible for his death. So, who is the sinister mind responsible for the death of Joseph Augustus Zarelli.

Cash App-Mon, 01 Jan 2024 - 79 - Episode 79: Deadly Hallucinations
On July 23, 2016, inside the Ellenville, NY, apartment of 27-year-old Sarra Gilbert a murder in the most horrific fashion occurred. Sarra stabbed her 52-year-old mother, Mari Gilbert more than 200 hundred times and then bludgeoned her head with a fire extinguisher until she was certain her mother was dead. Sarra had a long history of mental illness staring at a young age, with her defense attorney arguing that on the day of the murder, she had been suffering from hallucinations and was hearing voices that told her to kill her mother. The defense would also argue that she had been subjected to years of mental and physical abuse at the hands of her mother and had even suffered from sexual abuse at the hands of her mother’s boyfriend. However, the prosecution and some of the members of Sarra’s family told a very different story, one that was filled with a devious and manipulative young woman who tried to excuse her drug addiction as a mental illness. Several of Sarra’s family members claimed that she had tormented and belittled her mother Mari for years. So, was this a mentally ill woman whose psychosis had led to her committing murder or was this just a sinister mind of a cold-blooded killer.

Cash App-Mon, 25 Dec 2023 - 78 - Episode 78: Christmas Bonus- A Christmas Eve Filled with Crimes
Regardless of whether you take part in the Christmas traditions or not, most everyone in the world is familiar with the plump jolly guy dressed in a velvet red suit, fashioned with a big shiny belt buckle and clunky black boots as the face of Christmas. Sorry, Jesus, but it’s kind of true. As part of our Christmas traditions, we sing carols of praise as well as those embedded with Santa himself. One such popular Christmas carol, sung by Americans is Santa Claus is Coming to Town, but have you ever stopped to really listened to the lyrics. If you haven’t, the bubbly little ditty seems rather to be a cautionary warning that is embedded with St. Nick’s criminal activities. In case you need a refresher, a few of the lyrics are: “He sees you when you’re sleeping, he knows when you’re awake, he knows if you’ve been bad or good, so be good for goodness sakes!” If those few verses were about anyone else other the man with the rosy cheeks and a snow-white beard, our alarm bells would be sounding off loudly. So, is Santa the kind and benevolent man we think he is or is the man in the dashing red suit a sinister criminal who has been operating right under our noses for hundreds of years without us ever giving a second thought to his misdeeds.

In the days leading up to committing multiply murders, Éric had expressed to several classmates his wish to commit suicide but before he did, he going to kill a few people first. Stating to them, “I’ve had enough.” So, was this just a sinister teen who had a lust for blood, or one that had been abused and controlled so severely that it had taken a toll on his mental health that had led to a deadly break in his psyche.

In January of 1999, thirteen-year-old Catherine Jones and her twelve-year-old brother Curtis Jones fatally shot their father’s live-in girlfriend, Sonya Speights at their Port St. John, Florida home. On several occasions prior to committing the murder, the young siblings had cried out for help about the sexual abuse they were enduring at the hands of another male relative who was living in the home. But when those cries for help fell on deaf ears, with their father nor his girlfriend doing anything to protect them, Catherine and Curtis turned to extreme measures planning to kill not only Sonja but also their father as well as the male relative sexually abusing them. However, investigators and the prosecution would paint a different picture, arguing that the two siblings were jealous of the victim because they were not getting their father’s full attention anymore. So, were these just two sinister siblings that committed a cold-blooded murder out of jealousy or were they children who felt so trapped, so alone and so victimized that they thought their only way out was through murder.

On the late summer afternoon of July 16, 2011, 54-year-old Blake Hadley and his wife 47-year-old Mary-Jo Hadley, were bludgeoned to death in their Port St. Lucie, Florida home. In 2012, Brazilian cannibals Jorge Beltrao Negromonte da Silveira, his wife Isabel Pires(pie-res), and his mistress Bruna Cristina Oliveira da Silva were arrested, for the murders of two women and a teenage girl whom they dismembered and ate. Not only did they dine upon their victims but also stuffed the flesh of the females they killed into savory pastries selling them to neighbors and other locals. The sinister three were dubbed as the “cannibals of Garanhaus” (gar-an-house) being named after the region where the murders took place. Jorge was described as the “ringleader” of the threesome and even referred to as the “Sweeney Todd cannibal” by multiple media outlets. At his trial however, Jorge would claim to not have been involved in the actual killings, but instead that he and his wife had been tortured by his mistress into helping her rid of the evidence. So, was Jorge and his wife, Isabel, tortured into committing murder and devouring human flesh by his mistress Bruna, or was this a sinister threesome who were just plain deadly.

American serial killer and cannibal Joe Metheny aka “The Cannibal” claimed to have killed up to 10 female sex workers in Baltimore, Maryland during the 1990’s. Joe dismembered his victims’ bodies, saved pieces of their meat in his freezer, and discarded the rest of their remains in a nearby river or buried them. The 41-year-old serial killer who had an addiction to drugs and alcohol, admitted to eating the remains of some of his victims, combining the human meat with pork and beef. This meaty recipe wasn't one that he consumed all on his own though. Running a roadside BBQ stand, the human meat he saved in his freezer was turned into burgers and other assorted sandwiches that he sold to unsuspecting customers. After his arrest in 1996, due to one of his victims’ being able to escape, Joe Metheny stated that he would never apologize for the crimes he committed and that he actually enjoyed murdering each of his victims. So, was there a reason behind Joe Metheny’s sick and twisted acts or was he simply born with a sinister mind.

In late16th and early 17th centuriesshe tortured and killed anywhere between 50 to 650 young women for pure pleasure, and reportedly bathed in their blood to keep herself young and vibrant. Most people today are familiar with the writer Bram Stoker’s Draculapublished in 1897. The story is that of a vampire named Count Dracula who feeds on human blood, hunting his victims and killing them in the dead of night. The book was that of Stoker’s own creation, but he in fact drew inspiration for the bloodthirsty vampire from a real-life man with an even more gruesome taste for blood: Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia, or better known throughout history as Vlad the Impaler. The true history of Vlad the Impaler is far more sinister than anything written in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. He earned his formidable nickname for impaling more than 20,000 people and killing as many as 60,000 others during his bloody reign. So, was Vlad the Impaler a bloodthirsty killer or a ruthless defender of his throne.

Cash App-Mon, 25 Sep 2023 - 62 - Episode 62: The Quite Contrary Bloody Mary
In recent years many well-known nursery rhymes have been tied to suspected dark historical origins. Such a nursery rhyme is the English one, Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary that is often song by children who are playing. The nursey rhyme’s origins and actual meaning are disputed with many believing it has ties to a religious theme. But others argue that the children’s song is about governorship or even fertility. The name Mary has been used in several humorous nursery rhymes, but in the case of Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary, some historians believe the person behind the little ditty is anything but humorous. This Mary might actually refer to the murderous queen: Queen Mary I of England or also known as Bloody Mary, the Catholic monarch who had over three-hundred Protestants burned at the stake for turning away from the Catholic faith. So, was Queen Mary I, a religious fanatic that turned into a mass killer or was she a religious crusader.

Cash App-Mon, 18 Sep 2023 - 61 - Episode 61: The History of the Cannibalistic Fairytale
Most fairytales have darker realities or cautionary themes lying underneath their cheerful exteriors. Some of the most famous fairytales are those written by the Grimm brothers, who’s stories are dark and filled with murder, mayhem, premarital sex, child abuse, incest, and wicked mothers. One of their most horrific tales is that of “Hansel and Gretel”, a story which nightmares are made of. The fairytale features famine, child abandonment, attempted cannibalism, enslavement, and murder. The origins of the story are equally — if not more — horrifying.

Children’s literature has always been vital to society, helping young minds understand complex issues. Many literary experts believe that nursery rhymes often contain hidden meanings, references to historical events or were critical of the political and social climate of the day. Most people are familiar with the nursey rhyme: Do You Know the Muffin Man with its lyrics: Do you know the muffin man /The muffin man, the muffin man? /Do you know the muffin man/Who lives on Drury Lane? There are different variations of the nursery rhyme, but they don’t deviate much from the original with its origins unclear. Different theories have emerged over the years of who the muffin man was. Many claim that the true story of the Muffin Man is a sinister one about a serial killer in 16th-century London. In this version of the story, The Muffin Man was a pastry chef who killed several of his rivals and more than a dozen children on a street in London called Drury Lane. So does this nursey rhyme have a sinister and dark origin or is it a simple cautionary song.

Cash App-Tue, 22 Aug 2023 - 57 - Episode 57: The Notorious Murder of Biggie Smalls
Christopher Wallace, better known by his stage names the Notorious B.I.G., Biggie Smalls, or simply Biggie, was an American rapper who is considered one of the best of all times. Biggie became a central figure in the East Coast rap scene with the release of his 1994 album, "Ready to Die” and went on to collaborate with Sean Combs, Lil' Kim, Faith Evans, and Jay-Z. AllMusic described him as "the savior of East Coast hip-hop who had a talent for piling multiple rhymes on top of one another in quick succession” and his deep tone was described by Rolling Stone as a "thick, jaunty grumble”. According to Us Magazine, “ Biggie’s high-profile feud with fellow rapper Tupac Shakur — who was killed in a similar drive-by homicide in Las Vegas six months before his own death — also played a major role in his catapult to superstardom”. In the early hours of March 9, 1997, twenty-four-year-old Christopher Wallace was assassinated in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles, California. His death shocked the hip-hop community and to this day, his murder remains one of the biggest mysteries in the history of rap music. In 2005, eight years after his death, the Wallace family filed a second $400 million wrongful death lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department, alleging that two corrupt officers, David Mack and Rafael Perez had hidden evidence and may have been involved in Biggie's death.. So, who murdered Biggie Smalls and what were their reasons behind it.

German born Gesche Gottfried also known as the Angel of Bremen, for her kindly habit of nursing her victims through their death throes, she had inflicted on them, was the real deal when it comes to serial killers. Between 1813 to 1827, it is estimated that Gesche murdered 16 people by poisoning their food in Bremen and Hanover, Germany. Her poison of choice was a mixture of arsenic and a fat called ‘mouse butter’ that was usually used to kill mice. Gesche claimed her parents preferred her twin brother over her, which would leave lingering effects. Many of her victims had one common similarity, they were people close to her. Gesche murdered her parents, two husbands, a fiancé, her children, and even some of her friends. In 1831 she was sentenced to death by beheading for her crimes and was the last person to be publicly executed in the city of Bremen. So, was its Gesche’s (ge-she) early on feelings of being unloved and unwanted that brewed her into a killer or was it perhaps something a little more sinister.

Between 1998 and 2006, elderly women in Mexico City were being ruthlessly murdered in their homes. The victims were all strangled to death and had a similar profile. Juana Barraza dubbed the “Old Lady Killer” was a professional wrestler who murdered at least 16 elderly women, although some estimates go as high as 48. She specifically targeted women that were over the age of 60 who had lived alone, portraying herself as a caring individual or a social worker. Once she had gained her elderly victims trust, Juana would strangle them to death and then rob them. Before Juana had embarked on a career in killing, Mexican officials had not acknowledged the existence of serial killers but that would soon change. In 2006, Juana was arrested and sentenced to an astounding 759 years in prison, where she remains to this day. Juana’s motivation for killing seems to have stemmed from her hatred toward her mother. So was this sinister mind one that was born to be a killer or one that was created.

Jane Toppan, also known as Jolly Jane, was a female nurse serial killer from Boston, Massachusetts. Between 1880 to 1901, Jane claimed to have given lethal injections of morphine to 31 trusting victims with many being her patients. Ironically, the doctors that worked with Jane considered her one of the best nurses around. Jane however did not limit her victims to just the sick and elderly she was caring for, as her victims also included landlords, her own adopted sister and even friends she grew to dislike. After her arrest on October 29, 1901, Jane admitted to having committed the murders to satisfy a sexualfetish and claimed that her life goal was to “have killed more people – helpless people – than any other man or woman who ever lived.” Jane had a history of attempted suicides which helped her gain an insanity plea and was eventually confined to a state mental hospital for 40 years until her death. Many psychiatrists today agree that Jane Toppan is one of the most unusual female serial killers in history and like many serial killers, she had an unstable childhood. But unlike most female serial killers, she did it for the sexual thrill. So, what caused this sinister nurse’s dark sexual fetish to lead to murder.

In May of 2004, over a period of 12 days three dark green Kenneth Cole suitcases were discovered in and near Chesapeake Bay. One of the suitcases contained a pair of legs, another a pelvis, and the third a torso and head. The body parts would be identified as thirty-nine-year-old William or Bill McGuire, a New Jersey father of two sons. Following the trial of evidence would lead police to Bill’s wife Melanie McGuire, who they believe killed her husband to start a new life with her secret lover. However, Melanie claimed that her husband Bill was physically abusive to her, continually cheated on her and had a gambling addiction, had walked out of their house one night after a physical confrontation and never returned to the couple’s house. The media would dub the case as the “Suitcase Murder.” So was this a murder committed by a sinister mind in order to be with her lover or was Melanie in fact innocent in her husband’s murder.

Between the years of 1984 and 1988 Kansas City, Missouri would be plagued with sinister acts of sexual torture and murder by one of the most brutal serial killers in U.S. history, Robert Berdella. Growing up Berdella was physically and mentally abused by his father, and as a loner in school who struggled with his sexuality was bullied constantly. By the time he had entered college, Berdella had begun torturing and killing animals. At least six young men fell victim to Berdella’s rape, torture, and murdering after forcing his victims to endure periods of up to six weeks of captivity. Berdella became known as the Kansas City Butcher due to his practice of extensively dissecting his victims' bodies, which he would then dispose of some in garbage bags. In April of 1988 22-year-old Christopher Bryson would be Berdella’s last victim as he was able to escape Berdella’ house of horrors and get help from a neighbor. What police would find at Berdella’s home would astonish them and quickly realized that they had a serial killer on their hands. Along with discovering several bodies on Berdella’s property a diary that he kept was discovered and in it he described his killings as being "some of his darkest fantasies becoming his reality". In August of 1988 Berdella pleaded guilty and was sentenced t without the possibility of parole for the first-degree murder of one of his victims, Larry Pearson, and later in December of the same year plead guilty to one other charge of first-degree murder, along with four charges of second-degree murder. So was this a sinister mind who had been created from his environment or a mind that was just born to be sinister.

On the night of December 8, 2004, the Alrosa Villa night club in Columbus, Ohio was buzzing excitedly with fans eagerly waiting for the heavy metal band Damageplan to take the stage. Thirty-eight-year-old Darrell Abbott, also known as Dimebag or Dimebag Darrell, and his brother forty-year-old Vincent Paul Abbott had formed Damageplan after the breakup of their heavy metal band Pantera -- a group they formed in the 1980s. However, the night of December 8th would take a deadly turn when 25-year-old Nathan Gale, an audience member, shot Dimebag Darrell four times at point blank range killing him instantly. Gale would kill three other people and injuring serval others, before he was shot dead minutes later by a Columbus, Ohio police officer who was the first to respond to the scene. Later, Gale’s mother said her son was obsessed with Pantera and believed the band had stolen song lyrics from him. Gale had formerly served as a marine but in 2003, two years into his four-year enlistment was discharged telling both his mother and a former employer that he had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic causing his early discharge. However, his military records did not mention mental illness as the reason for his early release. So, was this the act of a mentally unwell man or that of a sinister mind.

Throughout Gypsy Rose’s childhood her mother Dee Dee Blanchard, a former nurse’s aide, made claims about her daughter’s health which resulted in a series of dire diagnoses and unneeded medical interventions. Due to Dee Dee's claims of Gypsy Rose’s aliments, she was prescribed a catalogue of medications, had to sleep using a breathing machine, was on a feeding tube, and went through multiple surgeries, including procedures on her eyes and the removal of her salivary glands. On the surface Dee Dee seemed like a devoted mother who gave her daughter everything she ever wanted. For over 20 years, they were the seemingly perfect picture of inspiration and hope. Unbelievably though, Gypsy Rose was not unwell, in fact her mother had been lying about her symptoms for years. Experts believe Dee Dee had a mental illness known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy or also called factitious disorder imposed on another, which made her fabricate her daughter's ill health in order to receive attention and sympathy for taking care of a sick child. However, the truth about Dee Dee’s torturous unneeded medical treatments for her daughter would only come to light in 2015, when Dee Dee was found stabbed to death in their home. Investigators discovered that Gypsy Rose arranged for her online boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to murder Dee Dee and less than 48 hours later, Gypsy Rose and Nicholas were apprehended. In July of 2015 Gypsy Rose accepted a plea bargain agreement and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Nicholas was sentenced to life in prison in February of 2019. So, was Dee Dee’s murder committed by two sinister minds or had Dee Dee’s actions against her daughter drive Gypsy Rose to find an accomplice and help free her from the hell she had been living in.

On Mother’s Day morning of May 13, 1995, the nude, brutally beaten, and almost decapitated body of thirty-one-year-old Nannette Krenzel, a single mom from Chicago, Illinois would be found along a desolate stretch of highway on the Wisconsin/Illinois state border. The night before Nannette’s body was discovered she had a fight at a sports bar in Chicago with her live-in boyfriend of three years, Jacob Stutz. This led to Jacob being the police’s prime suspect, however, there was no evidence to link him to Nannette’s murder. With no other leads, Nannette’s murder case seemed to stall. Almost seven months later, December 27, 1995, Sharon Kilburn walked into a police station in Chicago and told police that her daughter Donna Lee had called and told her that Donna and her husband twenty-five-year-old Michael Lee had fled to Arkansas because her husband had killed a woman in Chicago in a fit of rage. The circumstances that ended Nannette’s life were much more random and disturbing than investigators initially thought. Police would travel to Arkansas to question Michael and Donna about their involvement in the murder of Nannette. Michael would confess to snapping and killing Nannette in a fit of rage after she had rejected his advances and was charged with first degree murder. The Prosecution asserted that Michael was the only person responsible for Nannette's murder, with Donna testifying against her husband for the prosecution. During Donna’s testimony she stated that she had helped Michael in killing Nannette and dumping her body. However, the defense claimed that in fact it was Donna who had killed Nannette in a rage of jealously and that Michael had only helped in dumping Nannette’s body. After a few days of deliberating the jury found Michael Lee guilty of first-degree murder of Nannette Krenzel. Michael Lee was sentenced to life in prison and ordered to serve an extended term of 70 years due to the exceptionally brutal and heinous nature of the murder. Donna Lee was never charged with any crime related to Nannette's death and testified that she had not been offered any leniency in exchange for her testimony. So, was Nanette’s murderer Michael Lee, Donna Lee or both.

Thirty-six-year-old Andrea Yates who had history of mental illness and postpartum depression was a stay-at-home-mom, home schooling her five young children, 7-year-old Noah, 5-year-old John, 3-year-old Paul, 2-year-old Luke, and 6-month-old Mary. Throughout the years of having children Andrea was treated for her severe postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis, and schizophrenia with anti-psychotic medications and antidepressants. In 2002, a jury would convict Andrea of capital murder and was sentenced to life in prison with a chance of parole after 40 years. However, Andrea’s defense attorney would appeal her conviction on the grounds of her lack of mental stability during the trial. At her retrial in July of 2006, Andrea would be found not guilty by reason of insanity. The court would have her committed to the high-security North Texas State Hospital in Vernon, Texas where she received medical treatment. In January of 2007, Andrea was moved to the low security mental hospital, Kerrville State Hospital located in Kerrville, Texas where she remains today having spent a third of her life institutionalized. Cash App-Mon, 01 May 2023 - 37 - Episode 37: A Wrongful or Rightful Acquittal
Orenthal James Simpson, commonly known as O.J. or "The Juice," was an American football star, broadcaster, and actor, but perhaps best known for his murder trial for the deaths of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman. On the evening of June 12, 1994, O.J. Simpson's ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were stabbed to death outside of Nicole's Brentwood, California home. The specific details of whether O.J. was involved in the deaths of Nicole and Ron will probably never be known, but their murders along with the arrest of the former NFL star kindled a series of events that world media outlets and the American legal system had never seen. The trial, lasting close to a year, and the events surrounding it were considered the most world publicized events at the time and would seem to split our nation where many were convinced of O.J.’s guilt and stunned by his acquittal while others were completely convinced of his innocence and celebrated the verdict. Several explanations have been proposed as to why OJ was acquitted including the fact that the prosecution failed to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt, allegations of a mismanaged crime scene, faulty DNA evidence, disreputable authorities, and conspiracy theories based on racial bias. The media's coverage of the case has also been blamed for influencing the behavior of the participants, and possibly influencing members of the jury. To many, the trial had become a media circus with a setting of a courtroom filled with dysfunction and full of vibrant characters, which seemed more like a Lifetime movie than an actual trial. However, many others believe O.J. was acquitted because he was innocent of the crime. So, was O.J. Simpson wrongfully acquitted of the murders of Nicole and Ron because of the mishandling of the case and the media’s sensational coverage or was he rightfully acquitted because he was in fact innocent?

Cash App-Mon, 24 Apr 2023 - 36 - Episode 36: An Italian Murder
In November of 2007, the Italian city of Perugia would draw people’s attention from around the world with the gruesome murder and sexual assault of 21-year-old foreign exchange student Meredith Kercher from Surrey, England. She had been found dead in her Italian apartment on the floor of her locked bedroom. Meredith’s 20-year-old American roommate Amanda Knox who was also studying abroad and Amanda’s Italian citizen boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, would emerge as the primary suspects. World media outlets reported sinister tales of sex games gone wrong and viciously portrayed Amanda and Raffaele as heinous murderers, dubbing their trial as the trial of the decade. The prosecution's case against Amanda and Raffaele was based on circumstantial evidence and the testimony of a questionable eyewitness. Even though all conclusive physical and DNA evidence pointed elsewhere along with indications that the crime scene had been contaminated, Italian prosecutors focused on the alleged wrongdoings of Amanda Knox and generated countless stories of her being a promiscuous man-eater, whose Myspace nickname was "Foxy Knoxy". Another suspect would be arrested and tried as well, a drifter named Rudy Guede, a young man from the Ivory Coast who had a criminal record and who’s DNA was found at the crime scene and on Meredith’s body. Amanda and Raffaele consistently maintained their innocence throughout their trial. Nevertheless, amidst the swarm of media attention, Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito, who were tried separately from Rudy Guede, were convicted of Meredith Kercher’s murder twice, first in 2009 and again by an appeals court in 2014. Amanda and Raffaele would spend four years in prison before finally being acquitted of the murder for a second time. The Italian court would later blame the wrongful convictions of Amanda and Raffaele on the media’s high-profile attention on the case causing pressure to be placed on the local authorities in Perugia, effectively causing what the Italian judges called a “sudden acceleration” during the initial stages of the investigation. So, did the media’s sensational coverage of the case help in convicting these two young adults of murder?

Cash App-Mon, 17 Apr 2023 - 35 - Episode 35: The Harlem SixOn April 20, 1989, shortly after 1 am the barely clinging to life Trish Meili (ma-lee), a young white woman, was discovered in New York City’s Manhattan Central Park. Trish would survive her severe injuries, waking from a coma with no memory of the violent and horrific assault leaving her with no memory of her attacker. Two days after Trish’s assault, five teenagers, four being Latino and one being black, ranging in ages from 14 to 16 and were from Harlem would implicate themselves in Trish’s rape and assault after hours of psychological pressure and aggressive interrogation at the hands of veteran homicide detectives. During this time New York City was plagued with high crime and race tensions. The police announced to the media who had a keen appetite for astonishing crime stories that the young teens had been part of a gang of teenagers who were out "wilding," assaulting joggers and bicyclists in Central Park on the evening of Trish’s heinous assault. With the media’s sensational coverage of the teens, dubbed as the Central Park Five, it fed the hysteria of the city’s already fearful citizens and was met with a public outcry for justice. Despite no physical evidence tying them to the crime or any eyewitness accounts that connected them to Trish, along with inconsistent and inaccurate confessions after an interrogation that the five teens say was coerced, the teens were quickly arrested and tried as adults under New York State laws at the time and would be found guilty of the assault and rape of Trish Meili (ma-lee). More than a decade after the attack, convicted serial rapist Matias Reyes confessed to Trish’s rape and assault, claiming he was the only assailant involved. New DNA evidence along with Reyes’s confession proved that Reyes was the true assailant and had acted alone. In 2002, after serving sentences that ranged from six to 13 years for what then-New York City Mayor Ed Koch called “the crime of the century,” the charges against the five teens were vacated. The then teens now men eventually received a 41-million-dollar settlement in 2014. So, did the frenzy of the media’s coverage of the case, along with the high racial tensions and crimes in New City help in aiding the wrongful conviction of these five teens?

Cash App-Mon, 10 Apr 2023 - 34 - Episode 34 Easter Bonus: The Crucifixion
Since we are looking at wrongful convictions for the month of April, we decided to look at one of the most famous stories of wrongful convictions and executions known worldwide for our Easter Episode, The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. We will be looking at the arrest, charges, and crucifixion of Jesus from the angle of the law of a wrongful conviction. Now, with saying that, we will looking at this case both from historical facts and stories from the New Testament as this is one of the biggest sources about Jesus’s crucifixion. We will not discussing our own personal religious beliefs. Today, most contemporary scholars recognize that both Jewish and Roman authorities must have played some role in the execution of Jesus. What we know historically about Jesus’ teachings and actions suggest that he offended and provoke the religious leaders of Israel during his time and that the Roman authorities were the ones to carry out his execution. So, did Jesus’s teachings warrant his arrest and his execution by crucifixion?

In 1997 four United States Navy sailors 25-year-old Danial Williams, 27-year-old Derek Tice, 21- year-old Joseph Dick, Jr., and 21- year-old Eric Wilson collectively known as “The Norfolk Four,” confessed to the brutal rape and murder of 18-year-old Michelle Moore-Bosko, the wife of a U.S. Navy man, in Norfolk, Virginia. The four were sentenced based on their declared false confessions, as they were subjected to high-pressure interrogation tactics, including threats of death penalty and questionable use of lie detector tests., The details of Williams, Dick, Tice, and Wilson’s confessions did not match the crime scene, and furthermore there was the confession of the real rapist and killer of Michelle Moore-Bosko. All DNA and forensic evidence only pointed to one man, Omar Abdul Ballard, and his confession was the only confession that matched the physical evidence found at the crime scene. Ballard also swore under oath that he committed the crime alone. So, were these four sailors whose case involved police misconduct, false confessions and unconstitutionally suppressed evidence wrongfully convicted?

In the long hot summer of 1976, Shaw and Evans twisted sinister plot would begin and ending in the murder of 22-year-old Elizabeth Plunkett in County Wicklow, Ireland, and the murder of 24-year-old Mary Duffy in County Mayo, Ireland. Both young women were savagely beaten and brutally raped by both Shaw and Evans, eventually being killed with their lifeless bodies being discarded into the sea. At trial the court would hear how Shaw had told police: “I didn’t want to do it. It was Evans, he made me do it. “God help me. The devil made me do it. Keep him away from me.” So, were these the horrific acts of two sinister minds or was this the work of one sinister mind who forced another to be his accomplice?

The urban legend of a small-town killer inspired by the horror movies from the Friday the 13th film series, might have played a role in 19-year-old Mark Branch brutally killing Sharon Gregory. Police and the media quickly blamed the tragedy of Sharon’s murder on Branch’s obsession with horror movies as he supposably was wearing a hockey mask like that of Jason Vorhees in the Friday the 13th thriller films while killing Sharon . So, was this a murder committed by someone that was truly mentally unwell or was this a sinister mind playing out a fantasy with his obsession of horror movies?

On September 27, 2017, 29- year- old Chris Grover was found in his home dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Chris's longtime and live-in girlfriend 28-year-old Nicole Addimando admitted to killing him but claimed that she had suffered years of abuse by Chris and that she had acted out of self-defense because she was afraid for her life. The New York town, Poughkeepsie, would become divided with half the town believing that the former preschool teacher, coach and young mother of two had in fact acted out of self-defense. While the other half of Poughkeepsie would call for justice for Chris, who had been and well-respected Head Coach who seemed to be really loved by his family, friends, and students. The trial would draw national attention and, later would lead to a groundbreaking legal petition to review the case through the eyes of a 2019 New York state law that allows a court to resentence a domestic violence survivor if abuse contributed to their conviction. So, this begs to ask the question was this a case of self-defense or that of a sinister mind?
