What does it take to build an empire?

There are so many things that are consistent with the many leaders that I’ve been fortunate to have interviewed on this show. A tenacity for getting things done, willingness to do what no one else would do, and a positive energy that is infectious are just a couple of them. 

Today I was really excited to speak to someone about a platform that I’ve only just barely even used: Etsy. 

I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to speak to Dylan Jahraus. 

Dylan is a $1.5M Etsy seller with a corporate e-commerce background. She’s consulted 2,000+ Etsy sellers from 30+ different countries within a variety of categories– digital, POD, handmade, supplies and vintage!

What’s the most valuable tool that you have to inspire people?

I’ve been observing influential people for years and notice that they all have one critical similarity. 

They all tell stories. 

It makes sense when you consider that the entire human experience is rooted in storytelling. From the earliest days of caveman we’ve been telling stories to convey greater meaning. Inspiring others to take action or learn lessons. 

So let me ask you… what stories do you have to tell? 

As I would discover during this episode, there are actually 7 essential stories that we need as leaders in our companies. Which is why I turned to my new friend Kurian to help me learn more. 

Kurian Mathew Tharakan is the founder of the sales and marketing strategy firm StrategyPeak Sales & Marketing Advisors and a 27-year veteran of the sales and marketing industry. He has consulted for companies in numerous sectors. I've noticed a troubling trend among small businesses in closed Facebook communities and business groups. 🤔

Many are looking to hire only females or bragging about having a female team. 😱😲

As a business owner and leader, I encourage diversity and inclusivity in all aspects of my business. The best hire I ever made was a female, who ultimately replaced me in my previous job. Her different way of approaching things and unique perspective added immense value to the team.

Habits and routines are the cornerstone to your business. And nowhere is this more clear for me than start and end of the week routines

This is where our team needs us the most. We have to be on our game to put together the pieces for them to do their jobs.

I’ve noticed that Monday morning and Friday afternoon are often the least productive for strategic work - so why not schedule out things to keep us moving forward!

Start of the week gives us momentum. Allows for Monday morning to be action-oriented towards routine tasks rather than waffling about.

Friday is shutting things down, taking stock of the week. Unpacking this now so we’re able to enjoy any time off that we have scheduled for the weekend rather than leave something unfinished on the desk.

Of all the levers of influence, perhaps none is as powerful as authority. 

We are programmed from a young age to obey and listen to the authorities. To be subservient when ordered to do something by someone that is in charge. 

There are numerous ways that you can leverage authority within your own company, far from simply “because I said so”. Mandated authority is the least effective long term, and could bring negative implications to your own relationship with your subordinates. 

However, if we flip things around and leverage authority in a positive manner, the sky's the limit in how we can apply this principle to our team leadership.

Eventually you’ll have to encounter a team member that’s no longer performing at the level that’s expected of them.

It’s inevitable because we are ultimately in the PEOPLE business. The team members around us are not robots and may at some point need some intervention.

My mentor told me this the first time I attended one of his virtual summits and it’s 100% true. Operators are by very nature more rigid in how we work and some of the least likely to truly show our emotions. That’s just not who we are.

But recently, some changes in my life required me to accept praise with gratitude. That’s what my team needed and I had to give them that space.

Instead of shrugging it off, I took it all in with gratitude because I recognized that they needed to do that for their own sense of self. For their own soul and personal well-being.

The blank page, the empty project. These are my least favorite things that I encounter in my daily business life.

I’ve noticed that I have to completely segregate my business activities so that I can be the best at all times. My brain operates with different functions and it’s important I separate these activities through as many controls as possible.

By having templates that I’m working from, I help to focus my brain on creative work when I need to be creative, and tactical work when I need to be tactical.
