A special episode of Films that I Own That I Haven't Watched Yet, recorded shortly after Christmas last year (so only took me the best part of a year to edit and upload!) Four films, all linking from one to the next - so not chosen at random.

The first Mr Smith Goes To Washington (1939) - from director Frank Capra and starring James Stewart (who would later work together on Its A Wonderful Life), Jean Arthur and Claude Rains - a political comedy drama in which Stewart plays a newly appointed Senator who is battling a corrupt political system.

Then, I watch and review the festive romantic comedy The Shop Around The Corner (1940) - another James Stewart movie, a romantic comedy directed by Ernst Lubitsch in which Stewart plays alongside Margaret Sullivan as two employees working in a leathergoods shop, who dispite loathing each otrher in person are actually falling in love via anonymous letters.

Film 3 is You've Got Mail. (1998) which sees Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks star in a Nora Ephron retelling of the Shop Around the Corner, for the digital age, as Meg Ryan plays a small book shop owner who is put out of business by the book store chain owner, Hanks, but again, via anonymous emails they strike up a loving relationship

Finally, film 4 is Nora Ephron's whimsical remake of the classic TV Series Bewtitched, in which Will Farrell plays a fading TV star trying to boost his career by relaunching a classic TV show (Bewtitched) by casting unknown actress (and actual witch) played by Nicole Kidman.

In 1989, Tim Burton bought a new darker version of the Bob Kane creation Batman to life. The DC comic superhero was portrayed by comedy star Michael Keaton, and the Joker was none other than the manic Jack Nicholson. Bat Mania swept across the planet, and ten year old me was completely obsessed.

Fast forward ten years, I had a youtube channel doing film reviews, revisited the film and wasn't at all impressed (you can hear that review in this weeks episode too).

Skip on another ten years or so, and here I am, having just picked p the Bluray Batman Quadrilogy Boxset at a charity shop for £2.50, and I thought I would sit through again. Has my opinion changed? Will I make it through all four films? Find out now, in another episode of WN MOVIE TALK PODCAST!

This week is a rare review of a modern release - something I usually leave for the rest of the worlds Youtube / podcast film buffs, so as not to add to an over saturated market... but this time, after umming and arring for the past few weeks as to whether or not I should go and watch the latest installment in the Indiana Jones series, Indiana JOnes and the Dial Of Destiny, and in the end I did, and soI felt I had to have a say.

Trev was put up with a bad back over the weekend, and decided that it was a great time to revisit the 80's Ron Howard sci-fi fantasy Cocoon (1985), a Spielberg-esque film of wonder and sentiment, with lots of laughs along the way and great performances from its senior cast of Hollywood legends, past their sell-by date but still going strong. Actors such as Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, Don Ameche, Jack Gilford, Wilford Brimley, and supported by a younger cast including Brian Dennehy and Steve Guttenberg.

When a trio of elderly residents from a residential home break into the swimming pool of an abandoned house, they stumble across a group of alien cocoons, and the water they swim in has been filled with an exilir-like life source to preserve the ancient embrio's.Soon, the three elderly men have a new zest for life as the life source begins to work its magic.

From Mike Judge (King of the Hill, Office Space) Beavis and Butthead follows those two iconic stars of MTV on a hapless feature-lengthed episode, as a quest for TV becomes an all out action-fuelled plot featuring the voices of none-other than Bruce Willis and Demi Moore as the two villains of the film.

Watching tonight's film was like a bit of a time warp for both Stan and I, more so than most films, but has it still withstood the test of time?

Ultra-violent science fiction classic ROBOCOP (1987) gets discussed today as Trev is joined by yet another friend, Stan, who recommended this movie as its one of his favourites. Good job we hadn't done it already, which is surprising because its one of my favourites too.

A cult classic this week as Trev suggests 1971's macabre comedy drama Harold and Maude - a film that most film buffs revere yet most people haven't heard of... well, its about time you did.

Harold (Bud Cort) a young man obsessed with death, who's favourite past times are recreating suicides and visiting funerals, meets Maude (Ruth Gordon), an eccentric elderly lady with a zest for life and the two spark a strange but eye opening relationship. Some fantastic direction by Hal Ashby and a terrific soundtrack from Cat Stevens, which sparks this weeks listeners question - what are some of the best movie soundtracks.

Well, its been nearly a year since Nath and myself began this podcast, and nearly 40 episodes have aired. Usually, we chat for one and a half to two hours, and we try our best to whittle the chat down to about an hour. 

Sometimes this is easier than others, when we make so many mistakes, or when we go off on a tangent that slows the episode or does somewhat off topic, or when we are perhaps a little too off the wall, massive chunks of the episode can easily be plucked out! 

Very often these deleted scenes are too funny to completely erase, and so I never discard them. I have always rendered them, and popped them into a file and saved them up. Well, being end of the year, I thought that now would be as good a time as any to release them in this hilarious compilation

Before Lord Of The Rings, which in my mind is the ultimate trilogy, Kiwi directorPeter Jacksonhad made some pretty raw and grotesque low budget movies, showcasing the  ingenuity of his film making talent, and creating some of the most extreme yet effective gore effects to splatter the celluloid! Three films that started a colossal and diverse career, yet three films that I Own But Haven't Watched Yet!

And Brain Dead (1992) (aka Dead Alive in North America) a hilarious zombie movie which takes the genre up a notch and has been labelled as possibly the most goriest film ever.

Its All Hollows Eve - or Halloween to you, so Nath and Trev have chosen the hilarious supernatural  mocumentary What We Do In The Shadows to watch and discuss - from writer director duo Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor Ragnarok) and Jemaine Clement (Flight of The Conchords) .

The film follows the everyday life of three vampires who flat share in New Zealand's city of Wellington, this comedy-horror film has made it up into Trev's favourite comedy films, and has also spawned a successful TV show.

I have been waiting for this most recent offering of the Dune Series more so than any other movie this year. Not that I am a massive Dune fan.. not at all... but I have always looked at the huge Frank Herbert novels and wondered what secrets and marvels this vast world holds.  And with effects where they are, and the incredible filmmaker Denis Villeneuve at the helm, I was pretty confident that at last here was my IN!

Having tried several times to enter the world through the David Lynch film, I have always failed to grasp the story and have lost the plot and therefore lost interest before the end. But I thought that now I would revisit the old and embrace the new and discuss here and now for anyone who is interested in hearing it.

It also made me aware of just how much George Lucas had borrowed from these classic novels to create his own space opera. and so briefly discuss everything star wars borrowed from Dune

Never in the history of We Need To Talk About Movies Podcast has Trev and Nath seen the same film in such a completely different light as this one.

Nath's choice this week is Bad Words, the 2013 comedy starring and directed by wholesome actor Jason Bateman as the offensive Guy Trilby,  a role that clearly is trying to stick another feather in his proverbial acting cap.

Trilby is a grown man who has found a loop hole in the National Spelling Bee competitions designed for intellectual children, and with a hidden agenda he exploits this in order to walk away with the prize money and degrade the stability of the competition.

After we get through a  bucket load of light-hearted listeners 80's film suggestions carried over from last weeks episode, the conversation turns dark as we explore this months bizarre film title, Bad Boy Bubby.

Incest, oppression, religious zealots, physical and mental abuse, childhood trauma, mental and physical handycaps - the Australians sure know how to make a comedy!

Bubby (Nicholas Hope) is a child in the body of a 35year old man - he has lived in a hovel with his mum for his entire life, never seeing the outside world, or any other living soul. Through her oppressive parenting, he has learnt nothing of value to life, has been her in house lover, and a toy to manipulate and control. This week its time for another obscure or lesser known film - and we thought we would change the pace a little and instead of going for a completely random or even awful movie like we have in the past, we felt that this lesser known gem of a movie would be ideal viewing.

The hilarious and cringeworthy Nuts In May (1976) first screened on the BBC in the 70's as a part of their play for the day series and follows anally retentive control freak Keith Pratt (Sloman) and his timid wife Candice-Marie (Steadman) as they take a relaxing camping holiday in Dorset. But soon Keith's sanity is put to teh test by his fellow campers.

One of the early films from British filmmaker Mike Leigh, director of Secrets and Lies, Happy Go Lucky and Vera Drake, this has always stood out as a favourite in our household.

When Father Doug witnesses the death of his parents he travels to China to find his faith again, but gets more than he bargains for when he is infected by a superpower that enables him to turn into a dinosaur. With the help of a prostitute named Carol he uses his powers to fight villains and ninjas.

I don't know how many of you out there are like me in that you buy DVDs at a quicker rate then you can watch them? Well, in doing so, through purchasing at charity shops, car boot sales, Facebook sites etc etc, I now have over 100 Films that I Own But Have Not Watched Yet.

This week we discuss the hilarious historical black comedy The Death Of Stalin (2017) from writer director Armando Iannucci and starring Steve Buscemi, Michael Palin, Paul Whitehouse, Jason Isaacs, Jeffrey Tambor and Simon Russell Beale (among others).

After evil dictator Joseph Stalin  (Adrain McLoughlin) dies, he leaves behind a power vacuum  that his closest allies are quick to fill. This absolute comedy gem highlights the race to the top between the vile sadist Beriya (Beale) and the seemingly hapless Khrushchev (Buscemi) with the skulduggery and backstabbing that only the creator of the Thick of It can do justice!

Starring Billy Bob Thornton, Frances McDormand , Scarlette Johanson and James Gandolfini and written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, The Man Who Wasn't There is a deliciously slick and dark black comedy, following the mid life crisis of barber Ed Crane who dreams of the dizzying heights of Dry Cleaning only to learn that his dreams have consequences.

Basically Nath and Trev gush all throughout this spoiler filled podcast, discussing what is clearly one of their favourite films and with stylish black and white cinematography by Roger Deakins, its no wonder!

In this weeks We Need To Talk About... Movies Podcast, we need to talk about the Hong Kong crime thriller Internal Affairs, and its gritty Hollywood remake The Departed.

Two films for the price of one... well, sort of! 

Part of a trilogy of films from Hong Kong directors Andrew Lauand Alan Mak, Infernal Affairs 2002) starring Andy Lau, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung and Eric Tsang tells the intricate and tense story of triads and police using moles to out wit each other.

The Departed (2006) was the violent remake and the film which finally won director Martin Scorsese his first best director Oscar, and see's Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio going undercover in each others territory. With noteworthy performances from Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin and Martin Sheen.
