- 801 - Episode 469 - Ron Thomson || Old School Elephant Culling
Ron Thomson is a former 25-year Zimbabwe Parks Board veteran who was involved in wildlife management’s heyday in the 60’s through the 80’s. Ron was involved in elephant management - including so-called ‘precision removal’ of elephants, i.e., a population control mechanism called culling. Culling is an extremely controversial topic and has been eradicated from all elephant management today. It was removed from management because it was seen by as cruel and unethical. Culling was a tool to maintain elephants at a certain level (i.e., Kruger Park at 7,500 elephants). He and Robbie catch up about Ron’s storied career, what it was like ‘back in the day’, his thoughts on elephants today, and old school stories of Zim. This is the first in a series of podcasts around elephants in Africa. Its such a strongly emotive topic, but there is no greater conversation needed than the successful management of elephants. Tue, 16 Apr 2024 - 797 - Episode 465 - Lucas Cooke || Ahead of Australia’s Duck Season
Lucas Cooke, CEO of Field and Game Australia, joins Robbie on the podcast on the eve of the upcoming duck season in anticipation of the amount of anti hunters that will be pushing back on the duck season. Antis fell just short of a victory last year when the parliamentary inquiry voted to suggest banning duck hunting in Australia, but the force of the trade unions swayed them, and the labor government refused to ban duck hunting. Today marks the opening of the 2024 duck season in Victoria Australia. Blood Origins and Field and Game Australia have teamed up on a great pro-active piece - by putting a billboard up in Sale, Victoria showing people truth about duck season. Mon, 08 Apr 2024 - 794 - Short Truths Ep. 17 - Are Colorado Mountain Lions ‘Trophy Hunted’?
Here is the question on everyone’s lips – are mountain lions in Colorado trophy hunted? The technical answer is no. The emotional answer is tied to the motivation of the individual. Motivation is something that is not easily controlled – this is for all segments of the population including drunk driving, cheating on your taxes, taking steroids for body-building competitions – its unclear what makes people do certain things. Mix in different backgrounds, different ethics, and how you were raised – all combined in a melting pot that is diverse as humanity itself. So all we can talk to is the technical, legal answer. That answer is no – mountain lions are not trophy hunted in Colorado. You see they are not classified as a trophy animal, nor are they classified as vermin or furbearers, they are classified as big-game – just like wild sheep, elk, mule deer, pronghorns. Big game are hunted for many reasons, but the law tells you that you must sustainably utilize all parts of the animal. For example, by law you are not allowed to leave the meat in the field. By law you are not allowed to leave the head in the field. By law you are not allowed to leave the cape in the field. It all has to come out with you. So here's the #truth ... He figured - man there is definitely a niche that is needing to be filled - from that Broadside Hunting was created - an opportunity for people to learn how to hunt, butcher, cook, in a hosted environment. Mon, 01 Apr 2024 - 790 - Short Truths Ep. 16 - Are Mountain Lions and Bobcats Endangered in Colorado?
Here is a question floating around out there – are mountain lions and bobcats threatened and endangered in Colorado? This question is a valid one. We currently hunt both species in Colorado and if their respective populations were threatened in anyway or endangered, then all the sportsmen and women in Colorado and those non-residents that hunt them would say absolutely, we shouldn’t be hunting them. This is an incredibly important question to answer specifically in light of the potential ballot initiative being moved forward through signature gathering in the State of Colorado right now to ban the hunting of mountain lions and bobcats. So what’s the truth? Here's my answer ... Tue, 23 Jan 2024 - 770 - Episode 443 - Dave Gittleson || ‘Shoot, Shovel and Shut Up’?
Colorado Rancher Dave Gittleson returns to the Blood Origins podcast this week to give us an update on the Colorado wolves issue. You may remember Dave as the first rancher whose calves were the subject of depredation by reintroduced Colorado wolves, and applied for a 10-J ruling to lethally remove wolf 2101 for chronic depredation issues with it. Robbie asks if Dave’s attitude has changed around wolves, and gets into the tough questions like the ‘shoot, shovel, shut up’ doctrine and more. Tue, 16 Jan 2024 - 768 - Short Truths Ep. 15 - Hunting Tourism VS Photographic Tourism?
The question was posed to me: why do you Robbie differentiate between hunting and photographic tourism? Are they not the same thing - i.e., tourism? What's the difference? When you take a step back and really examine what the definition of tourism is - it's simply defined as visiting a location for a specific reason - whether that is to take a photo, take a drink, hunt an animal. It's all the same thing. There is an economic endeavor tied to that activity and at the end of the day both consumptive (i.e., hunting) and non-consumptive (i.e., photo tourism) from a wildlife perspective should have one common goal from their profits - wildlife conservation. If that's true, and they are honest to that goal, then there isn't really a difference. So here's my answer ... Do you have a question that we can answer on the Short Truths? Tue, 09 Jan 2024 - 765 - Short Truths Ep. 14 - Is Trophy Hunting Conservation?
The question that was posed to me was one that we get a lot: Is Trophy Hunting Conservation? Or do people just use that terminology to make themselves feel better about killing animals? This is a great question for the Short Truths. Though the motivation of the individual may not be based in conservation, the action of the individual is conservation, though it may not be the direct motivation. What is conservation? Preservation, sustaining, not wasteful loss of a resource, that has a plan to its management in order to maximize biodiversity. That is a bastardized combination of the Oxford dictionary and the Merriam Websters dictionary; it paints the picture of what conservation actually is - which then begs the question does hunting conform with that definition? So here's my answer ... Do you have a question we can answer on the short truths? Tue, 02 Jan 2024 - 762 - Short Truths Ep. 13 - Are Forest Elephants Endangered?
The question that was posed to me was are Forest Elephants Endangered? I think the question was more writ large: Are elephants endangered? The answer technically by IUCN and CITES standards is yes, all elephant species in the world are endangered, but practically on the ground the answer for the African Savannah Elephant maybe answered a little differently. Since 2021 the African Forest Elephant has been reclassified as a separate species and the first comprehensive survey of their population has occurred. It's a very secretive species that lives in the dense tropical forests of Gabon, Congo, and West Africa, where poaching and habitat destruction are the two pressures causing population constraints and decline. So here's my answer to the question - Are Forest Elephants Endangered? Thu, 28 Dec 2023 - 760 - Short Truths Ep. 12 - Do ‘Grip And Grins’ Hurt Hunting?
The question was posed to me - do so-called ‘grip and grins’ hurt hunting? This is a fantastic question with a complicated answer. We get hit with this question or thought every single day - does the grip and grin picture or the "trophy" picture help or hurt hunting? The answer is that it depends. There are certainly things that are portrayed today through social media that are not good for hunting. The picture with the animal should reflect respect for wildlife, respect for the animal, show a semblance of animal welfare, and also most importantly provide context to the entire process. Robbie takes the time to dive deep and explain in this short, 5-minute episode of Short Truths! Tue, 19 Dec 2023 - 757 - Short Truths Ep. 11 - What do you think about Corner Crossings?
The question was posed to me - what do I think about corner crossings? If you are not familiar with the United States and public lands, the landscape typically out west looks exactly like a checkerboard of private and public land. Often public land is opposite one another where their corners touch, and you can literally step from one piece of public to another. That is called corner crossing. If you are reading this - you are likely thinking what's wrong with that? Well it's illegal to do. However, this has recently been challenged in Wyoming where a group of hunters did it, got charged, it went all the way up to the Supreme Court of Wyoming and they were found not-guilty, essentially paving the way to make corner crossing legal. So here's my answer on what I think about Corner Crossings! If you have a question for us, leave us a comment, email it to us at info@bloodrigins.com, or DM us via FB or IG. Mon, 27 Nov 2023 - 747 - Short Truths Ep. 8 - Why Do Hunters Hunt Old Males?
The question that was posed was - why do you guys always hunt old males? The question was indirectly why do you always hunt the things with the biggest horns / antlers? There is a lot of questions around why hunters hunt old males? It's often tied to the moniker of trophy hunting. You guys are always after the biggest horns or the biggest antlers. Ok? Isn't that what you would want to hunt if you are interested in wildlife population sustainability and growth? The problem - or rather perception - that hunters have is that the only reason hunters chase older male animals is the big horns, big antlers, and big bodies. But what if we told you the famous ‘point’ scoring system was actually developed to test the maturation of an ecosystem that is reflected in the health and maturity of the animals. Thu, 09 Nov 2023 - 738 - Short Truths Ep. 5 - Are Rhino’s Decreasing Because Of Hunting
Rhinos are one of the most endangered species on the planet that are still hunted in places. Oh man! How can you do that? How can you hunt an endangered species? Isn't that illegal? There are lots of questions that surround Rhinos - but one specifically that keeps coming up - are Rhino populations decreasing because of hunting? Rhino's are being absolutely decimated from poaching throughout Southern Africa. In South Africa and Namibia though there are bastions where Rhino's are flourishing and breeding and their population is increasing. These places tend to be tied with private hunting concessions. Why is this the case? The value that hunting, and in some places hunting Rhino's brings, allows these animals to be protected. Security around Rhinos is incredibly expensive endeavor that is a 365 day, 24 hr, 7 day a week job. Learn the truth here in under 4 minutes! Mon, 30 Oct 2023 - 735 - Short Truths Ep. 4 - What is the status of Leopards in Namibia?
Hunting has to be driven by the best available information, and the best available science. Ensuring sustainable take with population estimates is a good way to ensure that hunting is not having a deterimental effect on the population, which, honestly, is the last thing that any hunter wants. The science becomes even more critical when it comes to charismatic megafauna like leopards. So we received the question about leopards in Nambia, specifically "What’s the latest population estimate of leopards in Namibia?" Starting with 14,154 and a 250 leopard per year trophy hunting quota per year. After a new survey was undertaken recently between 2017 and 2019, an expanded population range was observed, it was found that densities vary widely across Namibia. Mon, 23 Oct 2023 - 731 - Short Truths Ep. 3 - What Is ‘Ethical’ Hunting?
Can you explain how YOU define ‘ethical’? Ethics often comes up in conversations within the hunting community and with fingers pointed at the hunting community - and for the most part both parties say the same thing, "That [insert any hunting practice] is unethical". Ethics, being ethical, is something that is often debated online. Often that discussion boils down to peoples opinions and preferences and rarely does the conversation or discussion focus on ethics. The definition of ethics is your morals and principles around an activity like hunting, i.e., the ethics of the kill, ethical behavior, ethical conduct etc. In my opinion, the applied ethic overarching it all, is tied to the treatment of the animal during the activity. So ... here's my answer. Do you have a question you would like us to answer? Send us the question at info@bloodorigins.com or you can text us the question at 620-860-4804. Mon, 16 Oct 2023 - 727 - Short Truths Ep. 2 - Canned Hunts
Our new Short Truths Podcast content series is back and Robbie is answering one of the most common questions we field at Blood Origins. What do you think of so-called ‘canned hunting’. The idea of canned hunting, high fence hunting, what is fair chase is a common set of questions that we get asked. What is the definition of canned hunting? When is high fence hunting ok? Would you ever high fence hunting? Canned hunting really comes down to the eye of the beholder or in this case the person undertaking the style of hunt, or more likely, the opinion of the person critiquing the individual undertaking the hunt. I wanted to try and address the topic in a very objective, take a couple of steps back from the topic manner. It is such an emotive topic that is very difficult to just think about it for a second. The social science aspect of this is very important. It’s what drives perceptions and drives values at the end of the day drives public opinion around hunting, and that is something to truly consider. We may not have the science to define a canned hunt and probably never will. I probably need to do 10 more of these kind of videos, looking at all sides of the argument, and looking at it through all the multiple lenses that needs to be looked through. So ... here's my first answer on this topic. Do you have a question you would like us to answer? Send us the question at info@bloodorigins.com or you can text us the question at 620-860-4804.
