Friends of the Rosary,

People who do not believe are not among the Lord Jesus’ flock. They refuse to be part of the Kingdom of God. These are truly blind and, sadly, do not manage well their free will.
They might be dominant in our society.

At that time, Jesus the Good Shepherd said to the Jews (Jn 10:22-30) in Jerusalem during the feast of the Dedication, as we read in the New Testament today:

“You do not believe, because you are not among my sheep. My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. ”

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand.”

Jesus said — as we read today (Jn 10:1-10):

“I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved.”

“I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”

Lord Jesus is calling every one of us by our name.

The Good Shepherd knows what’s hidden in our hearts, and He is leading us out to our salvation and communion with Him.

We are invited to avoid following strangers, thieves, and robbers. They come to slaughter and destroy our souls.

Only the Author of Life truly understands and forgives us, loving us unconditionally.

Today, we see in the Gospel of John John (6:60–69), at the end of its sixth chapter, how many disciples of Lord Jesus abandoned Him and returned to their former way of life. 
"The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe," said Jesus. 
When He asked whether the Twelve would leave too, Peter answered, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”
Jesus comes to us through the Flesh and Blood of the Eucharist and like Peter and the apostles we want to walk with the Holy One of God.

Easter is a time of rejoicing for every Christian. It’s a time for thanking and praising our Holy God. Christ's resurrection caused and guaranteed our own. Our eternal joy has been won for us by Christ.

The enigma of human existence has troubled agnostic philosophers and scholars down through the ages and still today. But this mystery finds its explanation in the risen Jesus.

Physical death is not the end for man, with all his intellect, talents, and God-given graces. We are meant to find our fulfillment in the true life to come, which lasts for eternity.

But before entering the glory of Heaven, we must endure our own Gethsemanes and Calvaries, as Christ did.

Christianity and the Catholic Church — the continuation of Christ’s work among us — has existed for almost two thousand years. It’s the longest institution that has ever existed on earth.

Without the Holy Spirit and the certainty of the Resurrection — that we celebrate on Easter — our faith would be worthless.

"If Christ has not risen," St. Paul says in 1 Cor. 15:17, "vain is your faith, for you are still in your sins." But "Christ has risen from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep."

His resurrection is the guarantee of our resurrection. We will all rise in glory if we have been faithful during our time in this valley of tears.

The foundation of our faith is the Word of God.

People often complain when they experience injustice and wickedness. Also, James and John once wished that Jesus would call down fire from Heaven and destroy the sinful cities. However, this is the spirit of the world, not the spirit of Christ.

“The Son of man came not to destroy souls, but to save" (Luke 9:55).

In the proper time, God will impart divine justice, in His own way.

For the present, He allows weeds to grow among the wheat.

Our mission is to follow in the steps of Christ, the unjustly suffering servant. He didn’t come to right all the injustices and wrongs of the world.

Our spiritual life is based — or it should be based — in one single premise: “Believe in the One sent by God the Father.”

The risen Jesus gives us through his disciples another critical advice—as we read today (Jn 6:22-29)

“Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.”

This way, when we start the third week of Easter, we are invited to seek what’s above, avoiding to think from an earthly perspective.

Christ suffered for us, leaving you an example that you should follow his steps,” St. Peter says in one of his epistles.

Jesus didn’t deserve to suffer for did no sin, and nevertheless was subject to persecution and injustice.

Today, on the Third Sunday of Easter, while we celebrate the risen Jesus we pray hard for peace in the Middle East. Yesterday, Iran fired hundreds of exploding drones and missiles in its first direct attack on Israel after years of a shadow war.

We invoke Our Lady of Peace, the Blessed Mother, so people open their minds to Jesus and understand the necessity of peace in the world.

Jesus, the Prince of Life and Peace, is more alive than ever and is on our side.

"Peace be with you," told the apostles when he stood in their midst, as we read in the Gospel today (Lk 24:35-48).

Christ walked with his first followers when they had lost all hope and restored their faith and joy.

Today, when war tensions escalate, we must humbly open ourselves to the Holy Spirit, allowing ourselves to be helped.

Christ Jesus, who demonstrates his authority over nature, comes to save us, encouraging us not to be afraid.

As we read today (Jn 6:16-21), Jesus walks on the stirred sea heading into the boat with the terrified disciples, and says to them: "It is I. Do not be afraid." 

In the Scriptures, the sea was something to be feared. Water was a symbol of danger and chaos.

The boat, with Peter and the other followers, is evocative of the Church, which moves through all types of storms across history.

So Jesus walking on water symbolizes God's control over the elements, including the chaotic sea and the powers of darkness and disorder. The Spirit of the Lord hovers over the surface of the waters. 

The faithful should not fear the chaotic elements of nature or life. Instead, we should place our complete trust in our Holy God.

Friends of the Rosary,

Jesus' multiplication of bread and fish, feeding a crowd of 5,000, is the only one of the miracles included in all four of the Gospel accounts.

This miracle greatly influenced the understanding of the first Christians of the Lord's identity and mission.

This passage — we read about it today in the Gospel — was followed by Christ's Bread of Life discourse, in which He explained his teaching on the Eucharist to the crowd.

He drew the connection between the miraculous feeding and the institution of the sacrament of the Eucharist at the Last Supper.

Then and today Christ Jesus is giving us the Bread of Life. The Eucharist is the place where heaven and earth meet, with the Lord’s sacred Body offered up and his precious Blood poured out.

The Sorrowful Mysteries that we pray today are the re-presentation of the sacrifice of the Cross.

St. Paul wrote that God's love for us is an excess since it exceeds and surpasses what reason can comprehend and desire.

He also calls the love of God "foolishness". This foolishness is reparation for that other foolishness which is sin.

In today's Gospel reading, we learn:

"The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him.
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,
but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, (Jn 3:31-36)."
"The one who comes from above is above all.
The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things.
But the one who comes from heaven is above all.
He testifies to what he has seen and heard,
but no one accepts his testimony."

God came into us purely out of love, out of his desire we flourish.

The entire universe is moving restlessly toward the unity of the souls with God. And Christ Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s salvific intent.

"Creation is nothing but the overflow from the intensity of Trinitarian love," wrote Bishop Barron. "All things flow from and are marked by the Spiritus Sanctus (Holy Spirit). He is their ground, their secret origin, their principle."

Christ revealed to us the divine goal: the sharing of the love between the Father, who has given his only Son to the world, and the Son, who has offered himself back to the Father.

Today, we read about it in John 3:16, one of the most well-known Bible verses (Jn 3:16-21):

"God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son,
so that everyone who believes in him might not perish
but might have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,
but that the world might be saved through him.
Whoever believes in him will not be condemned,
but whoever does not believe has already been condemned,
because he has not believed in the name of the only-begotten Son of God.
And this is the verdict,
that the light came into the world,
but people preferred darkness to light,
because their works were evil.
For everyone who does wicked things hates the light
and does not come toward the light,
so that his works might not be exposed.
But whoever lives the truth comes to the light,
so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God."

We celebrated yesterday the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord.

Today, we possess the knowledge Mary didn’t have at the time of the Annunciation — the knowledge about the plans of her Son, the Incarnate Word, would unfold on earth.

We are fortified by Mary’s trust in God at the Annunciation and encouraged to trust the Divine Mercy and the Divine Will to be open to God’s redirection of our lives.

In choosing to follow God, we trust in Jesus. We surrender to Him to be molded and “changed into his likeness,” as it is necessary for one’s growth in holiness (2 Cor 3:18).

Trusting God, as Mary did at the Annunciation, ultimately opens the gates of Heaven for us. God only desires the good of our souls.

Learning to trust Him in all the situations of our lives is the answer to bringing the true peace and hope we long for.

Today is the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, the first Joyful Mystery.

The Holy Spirit comes through the Archangel Gabriel to Mary and imparts to her the gift of all gifts, a divine Son.

In humble acceptance, the Virgin Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be [done] to me according to your word" (Lk 1:38).

Having been conceived immaculately, Mary's body became the Living Tabernacle of the Lord.

Accordingly, she answered in nearly the same words her Divine Son used on many occasions — thy will be done.

The Annunciation can be thought of as a precursor to Pentecost.

Today is the Sunday of Divine Mercy, the Octave Day of Easter, and we confidently say: Jesus, I trust in You, have mercy upon us and the whole world.

The Divine Mercy Sunday origin is from a revelation to the Polish nun Saint Faustina Maria Kowalska, the mystic of the twentieth century who initiated the Divine Mercy devotion.

Between 1930 and 1938 Jesus requested to her numerous times a Feast of Divine Mercy. On May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of Saint Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would be Divine Mercy Sunday.

God the Father revealed his nature of pure love through the Scriptures and the life, Passion, death, and Resurrection of his Son.

It’s the mystery of God’s divine mercy, a gift of humanity, described by Pope Saint John Paul II as “the greatest of the attributes and perfections of God” (Dives in misericordia, 13).

The risen Jesus offers His love that pardons, reconciles, and gives peace.

On this Sunday of Divine Mercy, we will reflect upon the revelation of God's mercy. Christ didn't come to condemn but to forgive, to show mercy. 
We intend to be filled with the Holy Spirit, trying to learn from the early Church when the first Christians dedicated themselves to the good of the other, as we read this Easter in the Act of the Apostle.
They were selfless and generous. They lived with the faith that conquers the world. 
And we recall the words of Saint Augustine, "Mercy is heartfelt sympathy for another's distress, impelling us to succor him if we can."
Let's ask for the intercession of Mary Mother of Mercy.

For a third time, the Risen Jesus revealed himself to a large group of Apostles after being raised from the dead (Jn 21:1-14).

The passage occurred in the Sea of Tiberias (Sea of Galilee). It was before the arrival of the Holy Spirit in Pentecost.

There were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons (James and John), and two others of his disciples.

The Apostles had returned to their old fishing job.

Having fished all night and caught nothing, they returned to shore early in the morning.

Jesus was standing on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.
Jesus said to them, "Children, have you caught anything to eat?"

When they disappointedly replied, “No,” He told them, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some”.

Without further comment, they threw their net out and caught 153 large fish, collectively far too many and too heavy a catch for them to haul onboard the boat.

John, intuitively recalling Jesus’ previous miraculous catch of fish, recognized that it was Jesus standing on the shore and he said to Simon Peter, “It is the Lord”.

When Jesus said, “Bring some of the fish you have just now caught,” Simon Peter went and dragged the remainder of the untorn net out of the water and retrieved some fish from it.

Jesus then said, “Come have breakfast” and he “took the bread and gave it to them and did the same with the fish”.

Christ Jesus, the Holy One risen from the dead by the Father after completing his redemptive mission, appeared to His eleven apostles, as Luke tells in the reading of today (Lk 24:35-48).

While they were still speaking about how two of the disciples recognized in the breaking of the bred, the Lord stood in their midst and showing his hands and feet said to them,

"Peace be with you."

He said to them,

"These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you,
that everything written about me in the law of Moses
and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled."

Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
And he said to them,

"Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer
and rise from the dead on the third day
and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins,
would be preached in his name
to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things."

In today’s Gospel of Luke (Lk 24:13-35), we read the marvelous passage of the disciples being enlightened by Jesus on the road to Emmaus.

He said to them,

“Oh, how foolish you are!
How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!
Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things
and enter into his glory?”

The two disciples did not understand the explanation of Our Lord's act of self-emptying himself out of love, even unto death, taking upon himself the sins of the world to take them away — the mystery of redemption through suffering.

Jesus explained this first to them, and then:

"He took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, and gave it to them.
With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him,
but he vanished from their sight."

The Eucharist made present His love — more powerful than sin and death.
Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

In the Gospel today (Jn 20:11-18), Mary Magdalene stays outside the tomb weeping. She is asked first by the angels and then by the Lord himself by she is weeping. 

Jesus calls Mary Magdalene by her name, and she recognizes Him. Her pessimism disappears. She goes from fear to joy!

We all are consoled by the truth that Jesus is seeing, knowing, and loving us, even when we feel troubled, discouraged, and far away from Him.

Also, Jesus said to her, “Stop holding on to me,
for I have not yet ascended to the Father.
But go to my brothers and tell them,
‘I am going to my Father and your Father,
to my God and your God.”

Christ’s commands to “stop holding on” means He desires greater intimacy than merely standing externally. He wants us to receive the Holy who will transform us into other Christ.

Jesus is Risen! Is risen indeed!

Today, Monday in the Octave of Easter, we read (Mt 28:8-15) the episode of the first apparition of the crucified and risen Jesus to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary.

The two women embraced his feet and did him homage. Our Lord called them by their name and encouraged them not to be afraid.

As long as we trust in Jesus, we shouldn’t be afraid. The Resurrection of Jesus from the dead showed that God is up to something greater than we had imagined.

As Bishop Barron wrote yesterday, “We can begin to see this world as a place of gestation toward something higher, more permanent, more splendid.”

The path of salvation has been opened to everyone. In light of the Resurrection, we see that running away from the Father doesn’t make any sense.

The stunning lesson of the Resurrection is that the smart way to conduct our lives is based on running into the arms of the Son.

Jesus is Risen! Is risen indeed!

Today is Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord, the foundation upon which our faith rests. It’s the Solemnity of Solemnities and the climax of the Church year because all of the mysteries we have commemorated from Advent until now have pointed toward Easter.

On this day, Christ Jesus conquered death and unlocked for us the path to the glory of eternity.

The sadness of the Passion and Crucifixion of the Holy Week is vanished. Through a deep prayer of thanksgiving, we praise and glorify Our Lord, expressing the joy of the Resurrection.

The true Lamb who took away the sins of the world by His Death destroyed our death and by His Resurrection restored our life.

Easter means the Redemption obtained — sin destroyed, death overcome, divine life brought back to us.

The resurrection of Christ is a pledge of the resurrection of our own body and our entrance into immortality.

It guarantees our redemption and God's assurance that our sins are forgiven, we are called to eternal life, and His merciful love endures forever.

Jesus is Risen! Is risen indeed!

Today, on Holy Saturday (from Sabbatum Sanctum, its official liturgical name), also known as Saturday of the Glory, the Church remembers and mourns Christ in the tomb. We pray and meditate on his Passion and Death and his Descent to the Dead to announce liberation from the shadow of darkness.

It is not Easter yet, and the day is usually spent working on the final preparations for the biggest feast of the Church year.

The entire body of the Church is represented in Mary, as she awaits, in faith, the victorious triumph of her Son over death and the celebration of his resurrection.

Christ rests in peace, after the great battle against sin and evil. We see the mortal wounds and the scars of intense suffering upon Him. Jesus' enemies are still furious, attempting to obliterate the memory of the Lord by lies and slander.

The Church abstains from the Sacrifice of the Mass, with the sacred table left bare, until after the solemn Vigil, the anticipation by night of the Resurrection.

Today, the whole Church commemorates the commemorate the Passion and crucifixion of Jesus Christ when He died for the sins of the world. It's a solemn day of mourning and also a legal holiday around much of the world. It's a day of sadness, spent in fasting, abstinence, and prayer. Practicing some mortifications today, such as eating less or standing up is appropriate.

We find ways to slow down and have more quiet to contemplate this day, avoiding loud conversations and restricting ourselves from distractions, entertainment, and social media.

We can pray for different devotions like the Rosary, Stations of the Cross, the Divine Mercy devotions, and do meditative readings of the passion of Christ.

The title for this day varies in different parts of the world: "Holy Friday" for Latin nations, in Germany, it is "Friday of Mourning," in Norway, it is "Long Friday." Some view the term "Good Friday" (used in English and Dutch) as a corruption of the term "God's Friday."

Liturgically, around three o'clock in the afternoon, we participate in the "Celebration of the Lord's Passion." The service — not a mass — is divided into three parts: the Liturgy of the Word, the Veneration of the Cross — when we joyfully venerate and kiss the wooden cross "on which hung the Savior of the world —, and Holy Communion.

In the Liturgy of the Word, we hear the passages from Isaiah of famous of the Suffering Servant (52:13-53:12). Psalm 30 is the Responsorial Psalm "Father, I put my life in your hands." The Second Reading is from the letter to the Hebrews, 4:14-16; 5:7-9. The Gospel Reading is the Passion of St. John.

The ten intercessions cover these areas:

The Father sent his Son to bring divine light to the darkest place. Christ Jesus offered his body in sacrifice to take away the sin of the world. St. Anselm said that the death of the Son reestablished the right relationship between divinity and humanity.

As we read today in the Gospel (Mt 26:14-25), during the Last Supper, Christ confirmed Judas Iscariot as His betrayer:

“Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”

“Woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born.”

Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply,

“Surely it is not I, Rabbi?”

He answered, “You have said so.”

Judas Iscariot expresses the mystery of iniquity or mysterium iniquitatis.The betrayer apostle had spent years in intimacy with Jesus, enjoyed His grace and merciful love, and noticed Jesus was the Son of God. And yet he turned the Messiah over to his enemies.

Theologians say that this anomalous tendency of human beings to evil sin has no rational ground for it. Bishop Barron states, "Those of us who regularly gather around the table of intimacy with Christ and yet engage consistently in the works of darkness are meant to see ourselves in the betrayer."

Today, Wednesday of Holy Week is traditionally known as Spy Wednesday, to commemorate the treachery of Judas, who made a bargain with the high priest to betray Jesus for 30 silver pieces.

This ends the official Lenten period; tomorrow we enter into the Holy Triduum, the three great liturgical days: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday.

In the Holy Land, Christians participated in a stunning procession from Bethphage to Jerusalem this Palm Sunday, Catholic News Agency reported.

The route followed the same path that Jesus took when He entered Jerusalem and was acclaimed by the crowd holding palms and olive branches.

About 3,000 faithful ascended the Mount of Olives, passed by Gethsemane, where Jesus experienced the most painful hours of his passion. Due to the ongoing war, there were fewer pilgrims than usual.

Those present responded with closeness in prayer, praise to the Lord, and a message of joy — the joy of being Christians.

“We have many problems, but we are truly happy that Jesus is our Lord. He is our joy and our strength,” said the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, who led the procession.

“Let us renew our commitment to follow Jesus and let us not be afraid! Jesus on the cross is the victory over the world, not the victory of arms, but that of love.”

The procession was preceded by the solemn Palm Sunday liturgy at the Holy Sepulcher, presided over by Pizzaballa.

The faithful waved palm branches and chanted “Hosanna,” circling the edicule of the Holy Sepulcher —the small shrine that houses the tomb of Jesus Christ—three times to symbolize the three days Jesus spent in the tomb.

Yesterday, speaking in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis invited the crowd to follow in Jesus’ footsteps as He entered Jerusalem "so that being made by his grace partakers of the cross, we may have a share also in his resurrection and his life."

At the end of Palm Sunday Mass, the Pope said: "And now we turn in prayer to the Virgin Mary. Let us learn from her to stay close to Jesus during the days of Holy Week, to arrive at the joy of the Resurrection."

With the whole Church of Christ we herald the celebration of the Holy Week of our Lord’s paschal mystery, that is, his passion and resurrection.

We pray with confidence, never getting discouraged by looking for results. We trust in the Lord; He never fails. He is like that.

Today, March 24th, is Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion and the beginning of Holy Week. It’s the completion of the Paschal Mystery of the Passion and Resurrection.

For five weeks of Lent, we have been preparing to celebrate our Lord’s paschal mystery by prayer, works of charity, and self-sacrifice.

Today we commemorate this solemn celebration in union with the whole Catholic Church. Christ entered in triumph into his own city of Jerusalem to complete his work as our Messiah: to suffer, to die, and to rise again.

As the faithful, we remember and dramatize Christ’s triumphal entrance into Jerusalem on a donkey. A huge crowd assembled, put their cloaks or branches on the ground, and waved palm branches, acclaiming Christ as the King of Israel, the Son of David.

We now joyfully acclaim by holding branches of palm trees Jesus our Messiah and King and sing as the priest enters the church. We cry, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord.”

Jesus the Messiah was, and is, the sign of contradiction, acclaimed by some and reviled by others. He was sent by the Father into this world to wrest us from sin and the power of darkness.

By the reading today in mass of the Passion at the Gospel, we remain united with him in his suffering on the cross, may we share his resurrection and new life.

May we reach the happiness of the new and everlasting Jerusalem one day.

Today, one week before Good Friday, we see in the Gospel (Jn 10:31-42) how hatred against Christ escalated in those final days of the Redeemer of the World.

Fridays of Lent have a penitential quality. The Stations of the Cross, prayed in many parishes today, allow us to love and treasure the Holy Cross of Jesus.

We have to be one in spirit with Him. In our crucifixion with Christ, we find salvation.

For Christ and with Christ, we suffer freely and willingly the unpleasant things that occur to us.

Fleeing from the Cross instead of holding it dear shouldn’t be our answer. We welcome the Cross as Our Savior did.

Who do you make yourself out to be?"

Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing;

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of St. Joseph, the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the foster father of Jesus. He is the patron and protector of the Universal Church.

He is also invoked as the patron of the dying because Jesus and Mary were at his death-bed and the patron of fathers, among many other causes. And that’s why today is Father’s Day.

St. Joseph was an ordinary manual laborer although descended from the royal house of David. In the designs of Providence, he was destined to become the spouse of the Mother of God. He faithfully fulfilled God’s high trust in protecting and guarding the greatest earthly treasures, Jesus and Mary.

Joseph was the trustworthy witness of the Messiah’s virgin birth. After this, he modestly retires into the background of holy Scripture.

His important mission in God’s plan of salvation was “to legally insert Jesus Christ into the line of David from whom, according to the prophets, the Messiah would be born, and to act as his father and guardian”, according to the Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy.

Most of our information about St. Joseph comes from the opening two chapters of St. Matthew’s Gospel. No words of his are recorded in the Gospels; he was the “silent” man.

St. Joseph was probably born in Bethlehem and probably passed away in Nazareth, probably before the beginning of Christ’s public life.

Today is the only Solemnity celebrated in the 2024 Lenten season since Easter is so early this year and the Solemnity of the Annunciation is transferred to the Second Week of Easter.

This Monday, March 18th we begin the fifth and final full week of Lent. Day after day, the liturgical readings tell of the lowering storm clouds that will break open next week.

And today’s main reading in the Gospel (John 8:1-11) features the woman caught in adultery. The scribes and Pharisees accuse and bring her to Jesus.

Our Lord responds: "Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."

And tells the woman: "Go, and from now on do not sin anymore."

In this biblical passage, we see divine mercy in action.

It’s the fruit of forgiveness offered and accepted. God loves sinners and rejects sin — because sin destroys and poisons our eternal souls.

Every sin is adultery to God — and is pardonable by Christ.

Previously called "Passion Sunday," this Fifth Sunday of Lent marks the beginning of Passiontide — the last two weeks of Lent. It commemorates the suffering of Christ (Latin passio = “suffering”). It's the final Sunday of Lent before the beginning of Holy Week.

The Catholic Church follows the practice of covering crosses and sacred images throughout the temples. Crosses remain covered until the beginning of the Easter Vigil.

The Gospel's main reading (Jn 12:20-33) invites us to reflect upon what it means to follow Christ.

The Lord said:

"Whoever loves his life loses it,
and whoever hates his life in this world
will preserve it for eternal life.
Whoever serves me must follow me, 
and where I am, there also will my servant be.
The Father will honor whoever serves me."

Also, He comments on the type of death He would suffer:

"Now is the time of judgment on this world; 
now the ruler of this world will be driven out.
And when I am lifted up from the earth, 
I will draw everyone to myself.”

The Optional Memorial of St. Patrick, which is ordinarily celebrated today, is superseded by the Sunday liturgy.

In today’s Gospel (Jn 7:1-2, 10, 25-30), we see how the Jews were trying to kill Our Lord as He moved in Galilee nearing the end of His public life.

"But no one laid a hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come."

So Christ Jesus continued to teach to large crowds who were coming to hear Him. The admiration of the people intensified the hatred of the priests, openly seeking the death of the Messiah. Our Lord was spending His days in teaching and His nights in prayer.
Does our conduct resemble that of Christ?

In difficult circumstances, when we are unjustly accused criticized, or condemned, let’s calmly continue our work and recourse to God in prayer. Let’s leave our reputation in the hands of Christ.

However, stating that everyone, no matter their deeds, will enter the glory of Heaven seems contrary to the words of Jesus.

Yesterday, in the Gospel’s main reading (Jn 5:17-30), the Son of God said:

"Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and will not come to condemnation, but has passed from death to life."

The message seems to be clear: Those "who have done good deeds" will go to the "resurrection of life" and those "who have done wicked deeds" to the "resurrection of condemnation."

In his apostolic letter "Salvici Doloris", St. John Paul II wrote on the Christian meaning of human suffering: "It is through suffering that Jesus redeems us."

Benedict XVI wrote in his book Jesus of Nazareth: "In Jesus’ Passion, the filth of the world is wiped out in the pain of infinite love."

Great pain is God’s chosen way, because, as the Ratzinger-supervised Catechism clarifies: “The heart is converted by looking at him whom we have pierced. It is by discovering the greatness of God’s love that our heart is shaken by the horror and weight of sin and begins to fear offending God by sin (CCC 1432).”

Benedict elaborated this idea by writing that the greatest way God gave himself was by showing his crazy desire for us through his pains.

"The Cross of Jesus illumines his whole life: his swaddling clothes, his baptism, the paradoxes of the Beatitudes, the Kingdom of God, and other things difficult to decipher become understandable when Jesus’ Cross is at the center."

The faithful, who see their lives increasingly perfected by the grace of God, find it incomprehensible why many among us, especially friends and family members, prefer to stay attached to sin and darkness.

The Holy Spirit explained yesterday’s Gospel reading (John 3:14-21).”

“And this is the verdict,
that the light came into the world, 
but people preferred darkness to light,
because their works were evil.
For everyone who does wicked things hates the light 
and does not come toward the light, 
so that his works might not be exposed.
But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.”

Our sinful nature, stemming from the original sin of our ancestors Adam and Eve, blinds us. Our fallen world seeks to keep us in darkness. The Lord knows this—He knows our souls—and because of His great love for us, He sends us light in abundance.

God, who is rich in mercy, saves us by the grace of His faith, which is a gift from Him. As we live in Christ, we belong to the Light.

We never engage with darkness. We only pray for those who, doing wicked things, hate the light.

The Fourth Sunday of Lent is traditionally called Laetare Sunday. Laetare is a Latin word that means "rejoice."

Today's Gospel (John 3:14-21) describes the reason for our joy: God's great love for us has been revealed in Jesus. Through his Passion, Death, and Resurrection, Christ has reconciled us with God and one another.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, 
so that everyone who believes in him might not perish 
but might have eternal life.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, 
but that the world might be saved through him.

Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, 
but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, 
because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

"I have come not to abolish the law but to fulfill it," Jesus said to the Pharisees, as we read this Wednesday (Matthew 5:17–19).

The Son of God Jesus denounced the hypocrisy of the instructional religion of that time, but He didn’t call for its dismantling.

"What He effected was a transfiguration of the best of that classical Israelite religion—temple, law, priesthood, sacrifice, covenant—into the institutions, sacraments, practices, and structures of his Mystical Body, the Church," explained Bishop Barron.

Many evangelicals want Jesus without the Universal Church. Also, followers of the New Age spirituality reject any religion.

The Catholic Church is holy and sinner at the same time. However, this universal institution with its lights and shadows is the continuation of the preaching and faithful love of Christ.

Benedict focused on three practical solutions. First, he mentions faith in a Creator God, and then "the renewal of the faith in the reality of Jesus Christ given to us in the Blessed Sacrament."
"And flowing from this, we must ask him to teach us all anew to understand the greatness of his suffering, his sacrifice."

Man's pride exceeds all bounds.

We all too frequently boast of our spiritual and material accomplishments as if no one had ever equaled us, even seeking to place himself on a level with, and at times even above, Our Lord.

Yet Christ, Who was true God, "emptied Himself, taking the nature of a slave and being made like unto men, and appearing in the form of man, He humbled Himself, becoming obedient to death, even to the death of the Cross." (Phil. 2:7).

Every Crucifix tells us this: "Learn of Me, for I am meek and humble of heart. I have been obedient unto death. I am full of love and patience."

The Son of God approached us in His deepest humiliation, summoning us to contemplate Him as the Man of Sorrows, asking we grow in humility and patience by studying His own resignation to the Will of His Heavenly Father.

"Today the ugliest danger is gender ideology, which seeks to blur differences between men and women through movements such as transgenderism," explained the Pope during an audience in Rome this month.

"Erasing differences is erasing humanity. Man and woman, however, are in a fruitful tension. The life of the human being is a vocation. Man and woman are created by God and are the image of the Creator."

We participate in a universal call "to embrace a specific and personal mission with joy and responsibility."

At that time, the crowd was asking Jesus for a sign from Heaven to believe, despite the countless miracles He performed — as we recently read in the Gospel (Lk 11:29-32).

The Son of God Jesus said to them: "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah."

The sign of Jonah was the victory of his death and Resurrection.

The monumental, timeless demonstration was His Resurrection, the central mystery in our lives.

The crucified Jesus, who had died and been buried, was risen from the dead and would appear alive again to his disciples before ascending into Heaven.

In his first letter to the Corinthians, which we read yesterday (1 Cor 1:22-25), St. Paul explains how Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom. “But we proclaim Christ crucified.”
For the Jews, Greeks, and Gentiles, Christ did not fit their preconceived ideas of the Messiah. They all looked to philosophy or human wisdom for the solution of man’s problems.
Our Lord’s message of faithfulness and merciful love was too radical for them. The crucified and the resurrected Jesus was a stumbling block to their foolishness, as St. Paul described.
And St. Paul concluded: "For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength."

The Catholic Church begins today the second phase of the Forty Days of Lent with the Gospel passage of the long dialogue of Jesus and the Samaritan woman from He asks for a drink of water (Jn 4:13-16).

Jesus said to her,

"Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water."

Later in John 7: 37-39 Jesus once again speaks of living water, saying, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them."

By this, he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.

Also, today Sunday, we honor St Katharine Drexel.

We see a portrait of our Holy God in today's Gospel of Luke and the well-known parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:1–3, 11-32).

This is the story:

A son asks his father for his inheritance, then squanders it recklessly, as he lives a life of indulgence. With nothing left, he is forced to work as a hired hand for a pig farmer. He is so destitute that he longs to eat the food of the pigs. Realizing that his father’s servants have better working conditions, he resolves to return to his father, beg forgiveness, and ask to be his servant.

Upon arriving at his father’s house, he is welcomed with loving arms. His father is overwhelmed with joy at his son’s return and holds a feast in his honor.

The prodigal son’s older brother, who has remained serving in his father’s house, does not share his father’s joy. Instead, he is jealous that his father has not honored him. His father urges him not to resent his brother, but to instead be happy for him.

The story of the Prodigal Son is the history of our own desertion. But we are given an urgent call to repentance and conversion. "Father, I have sinned." Our Father welcomes us with mercy. He receives us again as His children.

Friends, the Father's nature is to give. God simply is love. And we, sinners, tend to misunderstand how to access the divine love.

The Forty Days of Lent is also a period of education and formation for adults who have not yet been baptized. They are being prepared to receive Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist, the three sacraments of Christian initiation, at the Easter Vigil. But the baptismal character of Lent is not only for catechumens. All of the faithful are reminded that Baptism is for the forgiveness of sins.
All the baptized require liberation from sin: from the bad habits that enslave us and impede our friendship with Christ.
The Church is always in need of conversion.
During Lent, all the baptized undergo a “second baptism,” to meet once again the mysteries of God’s mercy and love.

Today, we read in the Gospel the story told by Jesus to the Pharisees of a poor man named Lazarus covered with sores who sat outside the door of a rich man dressed finely and dining sumptuously each day.

When Lazarus died, he was carried away by angels to "the bosom of Abraham"and comforted there. The rich man also died and was buried, and carried to the netherworld, where he was in torment.

From the flames of Hell, the rich man asked Abraham to warn his earthly five brothers what would await them if they didn't repent.

Abraham replied,
"If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets,
neither will they be persuaded
if someone should rise from the dead."

Jesus doesn’t say anything about who was the rich man. What matters is that he didn’t care. Lazarus wasn’t his problem to address.

He lost salvation not because of anything he did, or his material richness, but because of what he omitted doing. Because of his indifference and unwillingness to take action.

As Christians, we are — or should be — committed to caring and helping those who are poor and deserve our merciful love.

In today’s reading (Mt 20:17-28), Christ Jesus anticipates to the Twelve disciples His Sorrowful Passion:
"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem,
and the Son of Man will be handed over to
the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and hand him over to the Gentiles
to be mocked and scourged and
crucified, and he will be raised on the
third day."
He also explains the meaning of His earthly dwelling:
"Whoever wishes to be great among you
shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you
shall be your slave.
Just so, the Son of Man did not come
to be served but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Still today, these words are shocking us: The Holy One serving the humanity that rejected Him and even giving His life in reparation of our sins.

As we read in the Gospel today (Mt 23:1-12), Jesus said to his disciples and the crowd:

"The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted."

The Son of God was talking about the spiritual pride shown by the scribes and Pharisees:

"Do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice."

Being themselves the authors of many precepts, the Pharisees believed themselves to be equally the authors of their own sanctity.

In other words, they rejected the merciful love of Christ, putting themselves away from Him and His Salvation.

The Holy Trinity speaks to us in many ways, including through the Sunday Scripture readings.
And today, on the second Sunday of Lent, we move from Jesus' retreat to the desert and the temptations by the devil to the splendor of the Transfiguration. 
This episode, when Christ was transformed into pure light, is told in the three Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. 

The Transfiguration is a promise of Jesus’ glory, his Resurrection.

On a mountain in today’s reading, a voice affirms that Jesus is God’s Son in words reminiscent of the voice at Jesus’ baptism. In addition, the appearance of Moses and Elijah connects this story with God’s relationship to the people of Israel.
Moses and Elijah represent the Law and the Prophets, respectively. Together with Jesus, they represent God’s complete Word.

The Transfiguration occurs in the presence of three of Jesus’ disciples — Peter, James, and John — who would accompany him to the Garden of Gethsemane just before his arrest in the first Sorrowful Mystery.

Yesterday, the Catholic Church honored St. Jacinta Marto (1910-1920), the youngest visionary of Our Lady of Fatima.

She and her brother Francisco — whose feast is April 4 — were officially declared saints on May 13, 2017, in Fatima, Portugal. St. Francisco's feast is on April 4.

Both under 12 years old, they were the youngest non-martyrs to be beatified in the history of the Church. Along with her cousin Lucia, they witnessed the apparitions of Mary.

Today’s Gospel tells the episode (Lk 5:27-32) of the instant conversion of the tax collector Levi — St. Matthew. Jesus passed by, gazed at Matthew, and simply said, "Follow me."

"And leaving everything behind, he got up and followed him."

Bishop Barron asks: "Was Jesus responding to a request from Matthew or some longing in the sinner’s heart? Certainly not. Grace, by definition, comes unbidden and without explanation."

Grace and conversion are creations of the Lord. And, mind you, no matter how hard and accomplished we are, we don't convert. Only the Lord Jesus converts.

God graciously calls us. Through prayer, we will notice this calling during this Lent.

Every Friday during Lent we abstain from eating meat. It's a Christian practice that helps us to discipline ourselves and dominate our superficial hunger for food and drink.

And like we did on Ash Wednesday on Good Friday we will eat one full meal, or two smaller meals.

"We fast because we have a hunger for God," as Bishop Barrons explains today.

Our deepest hunger is for God. And to discover this inner desire, we have to fast. We are meant to feel how hungry we are for God, the true Living Bread. 

In addition, the Fridays of Lent are a good practice for Good Friday as an opportunity to reflect on the Lord's Passion.

Today is the feast day of St. Valentine and most importantly, Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the penitential season of Lent — forty days of prayer, abstinence, and fasting in imitation of Our Lord in the desert.

During today's Mass, the ashes are blessed and then priests or deacons impart this sacramental on the faithful as a sign of conversion, penance, fragility, and mortality.

The ash on our forehead means that we are witness to our faith. It also reminds us that our time on earth is short.

The ashes are made from the palms used at the previous Passion Sunday ceremonies.

During Lent, we observe the central act of history, the redemption of the human race by Our Savior Jesus Christ.

All the baptized are called to do some penance:

• Abstinence from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent.

• Fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. It means that a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.

In today's readings, we learn from the first letter of James the Apostle about the value of trials and temptation (Jas 1:12-18).

"Blessed is he who perseveres in temptation,

"Each person is tempted when lured and enticed by his desire. Then desire conceives and brings forth sin, and when sin reaches maturity it gives birth to death."

All good giving and every perfect gift are from above, coming down from the Father of lights."

Friends, we are encouraged to persevere through trials, even finding joy in our difficulties, for these challenges test our faith and develop perseverance.

As the holy apostle teaches, we must avoid being double-minded and unstable in our faith, especially when seeking wisdom from God.

Instead, we should ask for God's grace and wisdom with unwavering faith, for He gives generously to all who ask.

Yesterday, February 11, was the 32nd World Day of the Sick, a commemoration instituted by Pope St. John Paul II.

The World Day of the Sick takes place each year on the memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes. On this day in 1858 in Lourdes, France, the 14-year-old peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous saw the Virgin Mary, wearing a white dress and holding a rosary.

It would be the first of 18 appearances of Holy Virgin in Lourdes. In one apparition, on the feast day of the Annunciation, Mary said, “I am the Immaculate Conception.”

Since then, Lourdes has been a popular travel destination. Thousands of people say their medical conditions have been cured through pilgrimage, prayer, and the water flowing from a spring to which Bernadette was directed by the Blessed Virgin.

Experts have verified 69 cases of miraculous healing at Lourdes since 1862.

Christ Jesus is the healer of the human race, afflicted by original sin. We all, repentant sinners, know our Shepherd.

At that time, during His public ministry, Jesus miraculously cured thousands of people.

One of those souls was a leper abandoned by society.

We see today in Mark's gospel (Mk 1:40-45) both the divine power and the divine compassion of Jesus in an act of healing.

A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said,
“If you wish, you can make me clean.”
Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, 
touched him, and said to him, 
“I do will it. Be made clean.”
The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean.

On Feb. 10, the Catholic Church remembers St. Scholastica (480-547). She was the twin sister of St. Benedict, the "father of monasticism" in Western Europe. The twins' mother died at their birth. 
Under Benedict's direction, Scholastica founded a community of nuns near the great Benedictine monastery Monte Cassino.
Inspired by Benedict's teaching, Scholastica devoted her life to seeking and serving God.
When she passed away, Benedict saw in a vision the soul of his sister departed from her body, and in the likeness of a dove, ascend into heaven. He rejoiced with hymns and praise, giving thanks to God.

What is the will of God? It is love, as love is His essence—to show love to others and/or will the good of others.

That is the way God's goodness manifests itself to us.

God is the supreme lover of our soul. His goodness means that He provides what we need for our perfection, not merely what we desire for our pleasure, which very often leads to our destruction.

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen wrote: "As a sculptor, He sometimes applies the chisel to the marble of our imperfect selves and knocks off huge chunks of selfishness that His image may better stand revealed. Like a musician, whenever He finds the strings too loose on the violin of our personality, He tightens them even though it hurts, so that we may better reveal our hidden harmonies."

What father does not want to be proud of his son? So long as there is love, there is necessarily a desire for the perfecting of the beloved.

What parent does not want to be proud of their child? So long as there is love, there is necessarily a desire for the perfecting of the beloved.

Because God loves us, like any father, He wants us to be happy. He made us for eternal joy.

Yesterday, we celebrated the memorial day of Blessed Pope Pius IX (1792-1878).

Pius IX defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on December 8, 1854. It stated, "It has been revealed by God that Mary was preserved from original sin from the moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God, and in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race."

Three years after the proclamation of the dogma, on March 25, 1858, the Blessed Virgin, during one of her apparitions to Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, France, identified herself with the words: “I am the Immaculate Conception.”

In 1996, Pope John Paul II said, "The freedom from every stain of original sin entails as a positive consequence the total freedom from all sin as well as the proclamation of Mary's perfect holiness, a doctrine to which the dogmatic definition makes a fundamental contribution."

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that Mary was "redeemed in a more exalted fashion, by reason of the merits of her Son."

Our Lord summoned the crowd:

Through prayer and sacrifices, we combat the evils and dysfunctions that stem from original sin, the effects of which are evident everywhere.

Today, on the memorial day of Saint Paul Miki and Companions Martyrs, we see Jesus calling the Pharisees hypocrites because they “disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.” (Mark 7:1–13)

The Pharisees and scribes were questioning Jesus because His disciples were not following the tradition of the elders but instead were eating with unwashed, uncleaned hands.

He responded,
“Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites,
as it is written:
These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me;
In vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines human precepts.”

The hypocrisy of the Pharisees was 1) disregard of love — not willing the good of the other — and 2) a human creation of the Eternal Word.

They were playing as little Gods, following an interpreted religion for their earthly purposes.

Regarding what is real love, Bishop Barron writes, “It’s a leaping outside of the narrow confines of my needs and desires, and an embrace of the other’s good for the other’s sake. It is an escape from the black hole of the ego, which tends to draw everything around it into itself.”

The Catholic Church celebrates today the Memorial of St. Agatha (d. 250), a virgin and martyr who died in defense of her purity, in Catania, Sicily.

After Quintanus, the governor of Sicily, tried in vain to force her to consent to sin, imprisoned for a month, and then had her breasts cut off, but that night Agatha was miraculously healed by the apostle St. Peter.

When asked why she lived the servile life of a Christian, St. Agatha answered: "I am a handmaid of Christ, and that is why I bear the outward appearance of a slave; yet this is the highest nobility, to be a slave to Christ."

The governor threatened her with the most dreadful tortures if she did not renounce Christ. Agatha countered: "If you threaten me with wild beasts, know that in the Name of Christ, they grow tame; if you use fire, from heaven angels will drop healing dew on me."

She was then rolled over sharp stones and burning coals and finally taken to prison where she died while praying.

"O Lord Jesus Christ, good Master, I give You thanks that You granted me victory over the executioners' tortures. Grant now that I may happily dwell in Your never-ending glory."

Today, February 3rd, we celebrate the memorial of St. Blaise (or Blase), a fourth-century saint and martyr who enjoys widespread veneration in the Eastern and Western Churches due to many cures attributed to him.

On this day the Church gives a "Blessing of the Throats" in honor of St. Blaise, who was a physician and Bishop of Sebaste, Armenia.

From the eighth century, St. Blaise has been invoked on behalf of the sick, especially those afflicted with illnesses of the throat. St. Blaise is included in the list of Fourteen Holy Helpers.

Today, two candles are blessed with a prayer that God will free us from illness.

St. Blaise lived in a cave on Mount Argeus and was a healer of men and animals. According to legend, sick animals would come to him on their own for help, but would never disturb him at prayer.

While arrested, and in prison, Blaise ministered to and healed fellow prisoners, including saving a child who was choking on a fish bone; this led to the blessing of throats on Blaise's feast day.

Today, forty days after the birth of Jesus, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also popularly known as Candlemas Day — since it takes place the Procession and Blessing of Candles at Mass.

Christ Child is revealed as the Messiah through the canticle and words of Simeon and the testimony of Anna the prophetess.

The Presentation of the Lord concludes the celebration of the Nativity. And with the offerings of the Virgin Mother and the prophecy of Simeon, the events now point toward Easter.

Overall, Jesus’ presentation signifies God made man’s entrance to His temple, presenting Himself to those who were searching for Him.

It also reminds us that prayer, penance, and contemplation result in a solid interior life that brings true Christian charity.

During the episode of the Presentation, we see Simeon’s prophecy of Mary’s sufferings. Pope John Paul II taught that ‘Simeon's words seem like a second Annunciation to Mary, for they tell her of the actual historical situation in which the Son is to accomplish his mission, namely, in misunderstanding and sorrow.’ (Redemptoris Mater, n16)

Only those who pray and offer penance, like Simeon and Anna, are open to the breath of the Spirit. They knew how to recognize the Lord in the circumstances in which He manifested Himself because they possessed an ample interior vision.

In addition, today, and given that consecrated men and women are to be the light in the world — imitating Jesus, the Light of the World — we celebrate the World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life. Pope St. John Paul II instituted this celebration in 1997.

The Church demonstrates its gratitude to all those who dedicate themselves in a privileged way to prayer and have a particular religious vocation to the contemplative life.

Jesus is astonished by our lack of faith.

As we read this week (MK 6:1-6), He cured many sick, drove out demons, and performed mighty deeds. Despite these miracles, people refuse to trust in Him.

Though we, the faithful, possess an understanding of the Eternal Word, our faith remains lacking. Christ Jesus dwells among us, yet we fail to recognize Him.

In the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, He abundantly bestows His grace, but we persist in disbelief and ingratitude.

One day, the whole truth will be revealed to each of us. Unfortunately, for many, it will be too late.

The majority will realize that they've wasted their time on Earth. It's time to fully convert and place our trust in Him.

Every January 31, the Catholic Church honors St. John Bosco (or “Don Bosco”), a 19th-century Italian priest who reached out to young people to remedy their lack of education, opportunities, and faith. He was an enlightened educator and innovator.

St. John Bosco was the founder of the Salesian Society, named in honor of St. Francis de Sales, and of the Daughters of Mary, Help of Christians. His lifework was the welfare of young boys and girls, hence his title, "Apostle of Youth." He had no formal system of education, but rather his methods centered on persuasion, authentic religiosity, and love for young people.

At age nine, he had a prophetic dream in which unruly young boys were uttering words of blasphemy. Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary appeared to John in the dream, saying he would bring such youths to God through the virtues of humility and charity. Later on, this dream would help John to discern his calling as a priest.
He'd become a spiritual guide and provider along with his fellow Salesian priests and brothers, giving boys religious instruction, lodging, education, and work opportunities. 

This success did not come easily, as the priest struggled to find reliable accommodations and support for his ambitious apostolate. Italy’s nationalist movement made life difficult for religious orders, and its anti-clerical attitudes even led to assassination attempts against Don Bosco.

However, such hostility did not stop the Salesians from expanding in Europe and beyond. They were helping 130,000 children in 250 houses by the end of Don Bosco’s life. “I have done nothing by myself,”he stated, saying it was“Our Lady who has done everything” through her intercession with God.

St. John Bosco died on January 31, 1888, after conveying a message: “Tell the boys that I shall be waiting for them all in Paradise.”

He was canonized on Easter Sunday of 1934 and is a patron saint of young people, apprentices, and Catholic publishers and editors.

This week we read in the Gospel how Jesus drives out demons and unclean spirits from possessed men.

Reflecting upon it, there are powerful things we can do to win the battle against evil in our lives, according to Fr. David Rider, a Catholic priest in Monroe, New York.

• Never engage in the occult or abstain from habitual mortal sin. It invites them in.

• Cleanse our homes from anything that can invite demons — new age crystals, good luck charms, books about the occult.

• Never leave your house without wearing some blessed object on your person: crucifix, miraculous medal, scapular.

• Never wear an Italian horn or an eye against the evil eye.

• Play Christian praise and worship music at all times. The devil can’t stand to be anywhere where Jesus is being praised.

• Pray the Holy Rosary — each Hail Mary is a hit to Satan's head.

• Go to confession frequently. One confession is more powerful than a hundred exorcisms

• Cling to the Holy Eucharist and spend time in adoration.

Christ gave us the power to be like Him so that we are free from sin because sin makes us like the devil.

Reflecting on this, Bishop Barron wrote, “and now we have to make a decision.” “If he is who he says he is and who he demonstrates himself to be, then we have to give our lives to him.”

"Quiet! Come out of him!"
The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him.

People possessed with demons were obeying him, to the amazement and astonishment of the people in Galilee.

From the first days of His public ministry, Jesus’ messianic power began to be manifested to those who saw and heard Him.

Still today, the mystery of the Incarnated Word is beyond human calculation and imagination.

Why don’t we accept the infinite power and love of God, as it is described in the Scriptures?

He woke up,
rebuked the wind,
and said to the sea, "Quiet! Be still!"
The wind ceased and there was great calm.
Then he asked them, "Why are you terrified?
Do you not yet have faith?

In this episode, the disciples stand symbolically for all of us journeying through life.
When the trials and anxieties of life confront us, our first reaction is fear.

But then Jesus successfully calms the waves.

If we are awake in the presence of Christ within us, then we can withstand the most frightening storms.

St. Paul's soul-shaking conversion has a parallel in our life. Christ came to dwell in us during our baptism. It was our first conversion, although in most of us were unaware of the gift received as we were baptized as infants.

If we are lukewarm or Christians merely from habit or tradition — unconscious Christians — we must be converted to a zealously faithful life.

Our repentance must include gratitude to God and be exercised with a simple heart.

Another "Damascus hour" is the Eucharist moment in holy Mass. Here, too, Christ meets us.

Every Mass affects a conversion, a change in us. We bring our human wants and weaknesses to the altar, and in exchange receive grace and divine Bread in Holy Communion.

This week we continue praying for the unity of the Christians and the legal protection of unborn children.

All human beings are created in the image and likeness of God. All of us are called to His eternal and loving company in Heaven.

No one is excluded. However, through their willingness and actions, many decide to reject the Truth and exclude themselves.

God is the model on which all human beings are created. He looked upon himself and wished that other beings would share in His joy. We participate in the greatness of our Creator, His intelligence, and loving nature.

This manner of creation brings us to understand the dignity of every human being.

A person might be born with a disability or may suffer disability through injury or disease, but these deprivations do not affect his essential dignity.

One day, all the human imperfections will be healed and they will enjoy forever the beatific vision that we all long for.

Today is the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children.

Parishes, schools, or religious formation programs may celebrate the Mass for the dignity of human life, giving thanks to God for the gift of human life.

It's a simple truth: It is better to be alive than never have been in existence. As a result, we worship and love the Giver of this gift.

This love is what moves us to protect the life of the unborn or any who might be unjustly treated.

We are also led to protect women who might feel tempted or forced to commit abortion, as we know the devastating consequences that abortion will have in their lives.

We have to do everything we can to convince the many perpetrators of abortion — medical personnel, pro-abortion activists, and politicians — of their errors, so they repent and change their ways, both for their benefit and for the benefit of society.

Jesus is passing by every day. He never ceases calling us by our names, because He wants our healing on Earth and our salvation for eternity. 
"Repent, and believe in the gospel."
Now is "the time of fulfillment," as he proclaimed. 
We are meant to see ourselves in Peter and Andrew, in James and John.
"Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men."

The message of salvation has been historically spread by the Holy Spirit working through the apostles, saints, and the faithful in the Church. This proves the power of God.

Had the message of salvation been spread and promulgated by powerful men, the cry would soon go up on all sides and people would say: "This religion is the invention of the upper class; it is a clever plan of the upper classes to keep the poor and humble workers in subjection."

Starting with the apostles and martyrs, it was the poor and working classes — many simple fishermen of Galilee — who spread Christ's message, and who suffered imprisonment and death at the hands of the educated and upper classes for so doing.

It’s a historical fact, proven year after year, that Christ erected an institution, the Catholic Church, against which the gates of hell, the power of all the enemies of our salvation, have been incapable of prevailing, despite their countless attempts of destruction from outside and inside during twenty centuries.

The divine guidance and help of Christ is with His Church, and it will be with it forever.

The faithful showed support for the right to life — a life-affirming culture that respects the inherent dignity of all human life.

The theme this year ‘With every woman, for every child’ focused on the need to care for both mother and child during the nine months of pregnancy and in the years after.

Pregnancy care centers and maternity homes across the country exist to provide support for women facing unexpected pregnancies so that no mother ever feels alone or without support on her journey.

The annual March for Life is the world’s largest annual human rights demonstration.

This week in the Gospel we see Christ Jesus curing many, including a man with a withered hand (Mark 3:1–6) as well those who had diseases and were pressing to touch him (Mk 3:7-12).

The unclean spirits were falling before him shouting, "You are the Son of God."

These healings signified the arrival of the kingdom of God.

His person was an entirely new way of ordering things — based on unconditional love and kindness.

This way of life made demons crazy and awakened the opposition of the powers of that time — the Pharisees and the religious establishment.

Our Lord permitted all of that darkness to crush Him. But then, on the third day, He would rise again from the dead in the power of the Holy Spirit, swallowing up the darkness of the world.

Tomorrow, Thursday, January 18, 2024, is the National Prayer Vigil for Life. It is held on the eve of the March for Life each January at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

Thousands of pilgrims and participants pray for an end to abortion and a greater respect for all human life.

"Glorify God in your body," as the Holy Spirit tells us through St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor 6:13c-15a, 17-20), as we read yesterday.

The first teaching emphasizes avoiding immorality, particularly sexual immorality.

"Our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within us," St. Paul wrote.

Dark forces in our society have promoted evil ideologies that push the idea that our body is for pleasure. Moreover, according to this view, one's gender can be chosen.

It’s all about going against the Divine and the Holy Spirit. We all know the destructive consequences of sin.

"You are not your own. For you have been purchased at a price," Paul said.
