He was the kid from Shiraz who ascended to the heights of the most American of institutions. Firouz Naderi was well known for his rise to the top-levels of NASA and his brilliant work in bringing humanity closer to Mars. But Dr Naderi was also increasingly speaking out about the world, politics, and policy in the United States and in Iran… and feeling the sting of those who disagreed with him as a consequence. Today, we replay a very special interview with Dr. Firouz Naderi - who joined Jian from Los Angeles for this conversation - about space, belonging and putting oneself out there with opinions and politics. He was candid, charming, elegant and eloquent in this interview. He will be missed.

A Special Edition of Roqe coinciding with the anniversary of Reza Shah’s birthday this week. This two-hour special focused on the “father of modern Iran” - updated from our Contemporary History of Iran episodes last year - tells the story of a man who came from modest means to become Iran’s powerful ruler whilst establishing the Pahlavi Dynasty. Indeed, Reza Shah’s evolution from military leader, to prime minister, to king of Iran from 1925-1941, would see him presiding over a fundamental transformation of Iran and the centralization of the Iranian state. He can be credited with everything from unifying warring tribes, to a national railroad, the ‘Persianization' of Iran, and the suppression of the dominance of the clergy, as well as women’s rights, and educational and judicial reform. But Reza Shah was also widely seen as an autocrat who ruled with an iron will and, by many accounts, was deeply unpopular by the time he was effectively forced from the throne and into exile by the British in 1941. Jian is joined by acclaimed historian Dr. Shaul Bakhash, whose latest book is about Reza Shah, for a wide-ranging and riveting conversation that includes new revelations of how the British worked to oust Reza Shah by the early 1940s, and how the former king is experiencing a renaissance in recognition and popularity at present as a secular icon both inside and outside of Iran.

A new edition of Roqe featuring three musicians of Iranian background in different parts of the diaspora making their contributions to the effort for a free Iran - the “sounds of change.” First, Jian is joined by talented songwriter and producer, Majid Kazemi, who is on the line from Dusseldorf and speaks of his experience at the major demonstration in Brussels earlier in the week. Then the rock vocalist and musician, Houman Javid, is live in the Roqe Studio in Toronto for a conversation and performance and makes the case that the current uprising is an inspirational continuation of what he and his peers wanted years ago inside Iran. And finally, the singer and recording artist Gelareh Sheibani joins Jian from Los Angeles to debut a new song and speak about her message of peace and inner-balance.
