Questions linger over the Umar Zameer first degree murder charge in the death of Toronto police Detective Constable Jeffrey Northrup and reaction to the trial of Mr. Zameer which came to an end last Sunday with a not guilty jury verdict, as well as the trial judge's "deepest apologies" expressed to Mr. Zameer. Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw's statement following the verdict that police "were hoping for a different outcome" has caused the Canadian Civil Liberties Association to engage and on Thursday the CCLA wanted to know what steps the Toronto Police Services Board will take to ensure the Chief and other police members will not "publicly malign bail decisions or criminal verdicts in the future." Toronto Police Service has responded, saying the chief "has stated numerous times that he supports the justice system and accepts the decision by the jury."  Comments made by Ontario premier Doug Ford, who described bail issued to Mr. Zameer as "completely unacceptable." Ford has since said his statement was based on "limited information" about the case. Three weeks ago we spoke with Toronto Metropolitan University Jewish student Emma and her Jewish professor and our program economics contributor Eric Kam about blatant antisemitism Jewish students at TMU are subjected to. Since then a lawsuit has been launched by a student and former employee of TMU against the university claiming $1.3 million in damages arguing TMU has become a "poisoned antisemitic learning and working environment." Last November Toronto law firm Diamond and Diamond initiated a class action lawsuit against Toronto Metropolitan University and its student union alleging both groups repeatedly have failed to address a "well-documented history of antisemitism on the TMU campus." Allan Schoenborn, who killed all three of his children, Kaitlyn 10, Max 8 and Corden 5 years of age 16 years ago, was declared 'not criminally responsible' because of mental illness and has been held the last 14 years at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Coquitlam, British Columbia. Schoenborn's first hearing before the'annual' review board in two years this week descended into chaos, including seeing his lawyer walking out of proceedings. Schoenborn has also changed his name and wants a publication ban on his new name placed into effect. While the world's current focus is on the Israel/Hamas war, Ukraine's war with Russia has entered its third year and news from Ukraine is that the country's military is running seriously low on war fighting equipment and munitions as the U.S. primarily is holding up a major arms shipment due to Republican/Democrat political infighting. We speak with Toronto Police Association president Jon Reid about the letter sent by six members of Toronto City Council, two on the police board, challenging police action at pro-Palestinian protests and demonstrations, particularly on March 30 when several people were arrested after clashing with police. The councillors letter includes "it is deeply concerning to hear residents voicing fears about their freedom to engage in protests, demonstrations and large gatherings." Toronto Chief of Police Myhron Demkiw's statement in reply included "The service will always respect the right to lawful assembly, which we have done, consistently since October 7"......"When individual behaviour crosses into criminality, endangering officers or the public we will enforce the law, as is our duty....."last weekend alone, police officers were assaulted, spit on, a police horse was struck, lawful orders not followed and demonstrators attempted to obstruct officers who were effecting arrests." Justice issues in Canada: The Supreme Court of Canada has refused to hear the appeal from Calgary mass killer Matthew de Grood who killed five fellow U of Calgary students at a 2014 house party. De Grood declared NCR (not criminally responsible) because of mental health issues. - As well the scheduled for this Tuesday hearing for another NCR killer, Allan Schoeborn, found delusional after having stabbed and smothered his 10 year old daughter and 8 and 5 year old sons to death has been postponed to possibly April or May.
