- 650 - Bonus Bang! Joel Creasey & Kit Warhurst
Myf’s away at Eurovision this week, so she and Zan have an extra special Bonus Bang for you from their unforgettable live show at Melbourne Comedy Festival. Comedian Joel Creasey was their special guest and he spilled the tea on what’s really going on behind the scenes when he and Myf host the annual song contest. Hint: they’ve shared a toothbrush. And that’s not all! Myf’s twin brother Kit dropped by too with a song and tale about their childhood trips to a place called magic mountain. Mon, 06 May 2024 - 11min - 648 - #288: Nicole Kidman, Jerry Seinfeld, Cosmopolitan
Whoosh, it's been a big week and a half and we're here to make sense of it for you and provide a bit of respite. The exhaustion and anger felt by women in the last couple of weeks can't go unmentioned, and we share our thoughts about this endless, frustrating conversation around women's right to live safely. Cosmopolitan magazine is making a return as an actual glossy, our Nicole has just made history in America, and Myf is vindicated by the public's feelings on the perfect movie length. Jerry Seinfeld has joined the ranks of blokes of a certain age with opinions on political correctness, so we're going to match him by giving our thoughts on Unfrosted. Yep, his Netflix film on Pop Tarts is also your homework for the Sydney Bang On Live show, fam. Apparently there's a bunch of people who don't shower daily, or even weekly, and Zan is fascinated. And socks and sandals (also jandals) are making a big comeback! So are piss stained jeans. It's FARSHUN. We farewell a literary giant in Paul Auster, and we're banging on about a brilliant read from Anna Funder, Wifedom, and a fun watch on Bon Jovi. Bang Medicine. Myf and Zan are back with our recap of the week in music, art, life, and stuff and all boxes are ticked this week. The Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame have announced their 2024 inductees; hear who made it, who didn't, and who cares. ICYMI Taylor Swift released a new album, then another one a couple of hours later. And there's a lot of conjecture on TTPD. We debrief on the conversations around music's most famous billionaire. David Beckham has gifted the internet with a Spice Girls reunion and isn't he chuffed about it? And a new release from Troye Sivan's homewares range has everyone talking. Speaking of art, a huge scale incredible work from Kamilaroi Bigambul artist Archie Moore has just taken out the top prize at the Venice Biennale! Mon, 22 Apr 2024 - 14min - 644 - #286: Coachella, Courtney Love, Scoop
It's been a large week, and Myf and Zan are here to take you into a happy place, and make sense of the sillier side of the internet. Much to celebrate too, as Double J turns 10 and a house party is planned. We're setting the homework for our Brissie Bang On Live too, so make sure you're up to speed. The defamation trial brought by Bruce Lehrmann has ended, and we reflect on the outcome, the process, what's left behind. Coachella's first weekend has brought plenty to the social media feed, and we dive into all the random surprises in the desert. And a new podcast series from Courtney Love has been getting attention for all the wrong (and predictable) reasons. As the reviews roll in for Back to Black, Laura Snapes has a particular gripe about the Amy Winehouse narrative that Zan is behind 100%. And get ready for even more music biopics, as we left you know what's in production (including some breaking news). The Willy Wonka experience continues to give us life; it's now on tour to Los Angeles and Zack Galifianakis is on board to boot! And it's Olympic FARSHUN week with Australia's official kit revealed. Myf and Zan are back with the week in music, art, life, and stuff and we've got it all this week! The new Amy Winehouse biopic comes out today, and Zan has had a sneak preview. So, what's the verdict? It's a big week for art, as we catch up on the MONA Museum court ruling for their Ladies Lounge. Over in Munich, another artist is trying his hand at disruption, and we love this fella's energy in hanging his own piece next to the greats. Sex and the City has landed on Netflix and so have the hot takes on whether Gen Z can handle it. We've sifted through them all to find our favourite. And speaking of FARSHUN, Zendaya is owning the red carpet (on grass, clay, and hardcourt) for her new film Challengers. It's been a big week for music, and we're all in with Beyoncé's "Cowboy Carter". Myf and Zan celebrate the highlights, unpack the songs that don't quite hit the mark, and share some easter eggs from the album too. Lizzo quit, then didn't, and we're confused. Meanwhile Billie Eilish is getting some backlash after calling out special edition vinyl, but y'know what? She'll be the one inheriting the earth that Rolling Stones fans have filled with plastic. A longread on The Cut has the world talking and the comments section aflame. We try and make sense of the writer praising marrying old (up) and its warped feminist bent. The case of a man not allowed in a Ladies Lounge at MONA has us fascinated, not least because the whole thing has become a work of art itself. Mon, 18 Mar 2024 - 12min - 634 - #281: Oscars, Kate, Kravitz
A lot can happen in a week. The last time we met, the conspiracies around Princess Kate's MIA status were being met with caution. Then... well, a lot happened. Myf and Zan unpack the timeline of what's gone down, while trying not to gurgle down the drainpipe of conspiracy themselves. Twitter is back, and can you believe the royals resurrected it? Huge week for the other illuminati too, with the Oscars being dished out and the ceremony giving us life. We catch up on the highs, the lows, and of course the FARSHUN. Hollywood's Walk of Fame got a new star this week as well, and wait till you hear Zoe Kravitz absolutely roasting her dad Lenny at the unveiling. And it's time to check in on the gays, as the queer community recovers from Kylie joining Madonna on stage in Los Angeles for a long awaited duet. How very Padam. Myf and Zan’s Bang On Live tour of the country is off and running so here’s a taste of their first show in Adelaide where they debuted their travelling ‘jar of hot takes’. Myf has some odd preferences when it comes to twisties, Zan has feelings about friendship bracelets and Bang Fam offer wisdom on choosing the right colour lipstick. Mon, 11 Mar 2024 - 07min - 632 - #280: Kylie's shoey, Princess Kate's conspiracy, Who TF Did I Marry?
Welcome to March, things are just as wild as ever. Myf and Zan unpack the week that was including the news of Hacks' return, the sad loss of iconic Iris Apfel, and Our Kylie being made to do a shoey. Kate Middleton AKA the future Queen of England, hasn't been seen in a while and oh boy the conspiracy theories are poppin' off. And prestige drama has taken hold on TikTok in the most unlikely of ways; long form videos asking the valid question "who the f**k did I marry"? Resident TikTok consumer Myf explains it all. It's fashion week somewhere (every week), and Paris is freeing the nipple in a big way, while Zan is banging on about a great fashion doc and Myf is watching American Fiction. Thu, 29 Feb 2024 - 630 - #278: Madame Web, Big Hair, The New Look
Whoosh, what a week! Taylor Swift's American fans are freaking out about the MCG's lack of car park, Beyoncé has made history on the country charts, and we are put in our place with Dan Akroyd's musical chops. The new Spider-verse film has opened, and the coverage around Madame Web has been ferocious. Quotes taken out of context, conspiracy theories hatched... the narrative around the press tour has subsumed reviews of the film itself. It speaks to a larger discourse around movies these days, where the internal worlds of production take over meaningful critique of the film itself, and all in the name of clickbait. Oh, we go in. Elsewhere, lawn mowing is viral, the bush is back (again) and big hair's return says more than just hairspray sales. And awards season continues with the BAFTA's which means FARSHUN. Speaking of which, we're banging on about Apple TV +'s new Christian Dior series The New Look, and a brilliant novel The Bee Sting. Wed, 21 Feb 2024 - 43min - 629 - #277: Beyoncé goes country, Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys
It's been a huge week for music cos the Super Bowl is on, and the biggest platforms on screen and off have been dominated by artists. Beyoncé stole the show by dropping her highly anticipated country era, with two new songs and an album to follow. The response has been interesting, and open up a conversation around who 'owns' country and who are the gatekeepers to the scene. This viral moment was a splash in a big pool of Taylor Swift's media domination; likewise, she used the Grammys stage to announce her new album and her dream run of record breaking, awards, album sales (and a Super Bowl win for her beau) has kept her in the headlines non-stop. As she arrives in Australia for her biggest shows ever we dare to discuss: are we getting a little Tay Tay fatigue? How are we complicit in this clickbait era? And when will the backlash begin? Alicia Keys has also been in the headlines, after her stunning performance at the halftime show revealed a smoothing out of her opening bung note, in post. A small thing leads to bigger conversation around shared history, memory, and trust when it comes to our collective experiences. Meanwhile Naomi Campbell is leaning fully into her germophobe vibes with some antibacterial fashion (tongue firmly in cheek), and we're banging on about a doco on "We Are the World", and the brilliant Blindboy podcast. It's a huge week of music, as all 3.5 hours of the Grammys unfolds. Zan has watched it all, Myf's seen the highlights, and we're here to unpack it all for you. Stick around too, cos we're gonna go deep into the amazing Grammys FARSHUN. The trailer for Amy Winehouse "Back to Black" has been released, and we're in two minds about how we feel about it. Related; the divisive Saltburn is keeping people talking. Not least cos an Australian radio producer and Jacob Elordi have gone head to head on bathwater hunting in Sydney. Thu, 08 Feb 2024 - 49min - 627 - #275: Universal v TikTok, Mob Wife, Priscilla
Myf and Zan are back for 2024, and it's a big bang! A huge week for music too, with a showdown between Univeral Music Group and TikTok raising big questions around what artists are paid, how they appear, and what AI will do to the music in the future. AI and deepfakes have been in the cycle too, with Taylor Swift and local MP Georgie Purcell. Image based abuse is growing, and often targeted towards women. We unpack everything that went down. In happier news, some big records were smashed and history made in this year's Hottest 100; it was all very padam. And FARSHUN is busting out of the gates with mob wife, eclectic grandpa, and winklepickers. What are winklepickers? Oh we'll explain. Thu, 01 Feb 2024 - 45min - 626 - #274: Bang On Summer Bonus Bang!
Hi Bang Fam! What this? A surprise little gift for you, as we head into Festivus! Back in November Myf and Zan headed to Nagambie Lakes, a beautiful spot about 90 mins north of Melbourne, for a huge comedy weekender called Comedy In the Vines. We did a live version of Bang On, amongst stand up sets from Celia Pacquola, Dave Hughes, Geraldine Hickey, and Susie Youssef. It was very silly, it was a bit windy, and we definitely made a giant cut out of ourselves and forced Luke McGregor to play “pin the wine on Myf and Zan”… but we also had some wonderful Bang Backs with two very funny comedians and mates, and wanted to share that with you. So dive in, as Rhys Nicholson bangs on about a podcast Zan is absolutely bingeing this summer, and Luke… well… you should just hear it yourself. Oh, and we’re very stoked that we’ll finally be bringing Bang On LIVE to the whole country! We’ve just announced a huge national tour, visiting places we’ve never been before and bringing Bang On to capital cities and towns alike. We hope to see you at one of the shows. Until then, have a safe, restful, and beautiful New Years. Thank you for your love and support of Bang On this and every year. We love youse heaps. Thu, 14 Dec 2023 - 51min - 624 - #272: Rizz, Taylor’s TIME, Year in Review
It’s December! And that means we’re wrapping everything (including presents) to see out another big year. It’s official, the Oxford Dictionary has got the charisma, or the Rizz, as their Word of the Year would have it. Taylor Swift has been named TIME mag’s Person of the Year, and Mariah has been knocked off the Christmas Tree by a fellow icon. We’re stoked. And as everyone wraps their Best Of lists for the year, Myf and Zan cast their pop culture eyes and ears back across our fave moments with the Bang Fam. From Bears to Barbie to Beckham, and let’s not forget Beyonce. We had microscopic handbags and big red boots. Kylie Padam’ed her way into our hearts (again), and Gwyneth got rectal ozone therapy. Thu, 07 Dec 2023 - 53min - 623 - #271: Dolly Cheerleader, Word of the Year, Spinal Tap Sequel
Hello Bang Fam! It’s almost December, and if that doesn’t make your head spin then this past week in music, art, life, and stuff, will. Dolly Parton continues to slay, performing at the Thanksgiving Halftime Show in a cheerleader outfit for the NRL, but some people (a dude) ain’t having it. We’re living for the responses to his opinion that a 77 year old woman should “dress her age”. It’s Word of the Year time too! Where dictionaries across the world capture the year that was in one word. Or two. So what has captured the imaginations of language in 2023? Meanwhile we’re back in 1984 with Spinal Tap with the news that a sequel is planned for this iconic rock mockumentary. Linda Evangelista doesn’t want to date anymore with a reason we all feel deeply, and The Prodigy have quietly changed the lyrics to one of their most divisive songs. And we’re banging on about a great doco on the song factory of Stock, Aitken and Waterman, and the return of wholesome TV with the Great British Bake Off. This episode contains strong language. Thu, 30 Nov 2023 - 38min - 622 - #270: Ghost Diana, Andre 3000’s flute album, Saltburn
It’s a veritable smorgasbord of pop culture this week, and yes we’re kicking off with the slide into soap opera for The Crown. It’s final season is upon us and oh boy, it’s a bit cooked. Zan is watching it all. Nat Bass has revealed she’s in a loving relationship with a woman; how good is good news? And it’s Marie Claire’s turn with their Women of the Year issue, and it’s all about the Tillies. It’s 2023 and we’re still chasing the question “who is Banksy?”, and also dealing with the (heart)breaking news that Hall is suing Oates. Elton John and Jake Shears are penning a musical about Tammy Faye Baker – please, take our money. And Andre 3000 has emerged with a new album of ambient flute music! Oh Bjork just dropped a banger with Rosalia too, what a time! Greg Sheridan’s hot takes on why women should be making more babies misses a few key points, and Myf and Zan have been in the movie theatre watching the much talked about new film Saltburn, and the David v Goliath movie Dumb Money. Thu, 23 Nov 2023 - 40min - 621 - #269: ARIAs goss, Jared Leto’s climb, Towel skirt
We’re fresh from the ARIAs and have all the behind the scenes chat to dish for you. Troye Sivan dominated, and he’s had a bit of a week aye? Being parodied by Timothee Chalamet, and being nominated for a Grammy. But the Grammy’s are being dominated by women overall, and we love to see them finally reflecting the culture. Jared Leto has climbed one of the most famous buildings in the world, and we want to know why. While the Fab 5 are losing a family member, as Bobby Berk announces his departure from Queer Eye. Magazines have cooked it this week too… why is McDreamy the Sexiest Person Alive in 2023? And why the heck is Kimmy K the GQ Man of the Year. Clearly, we have thoughts. Meanwhile narcissism is on the cards, with the new iPhone apparently making selfies horrendous, and in FARSHUN, Balenciaga is once again taking the absolute piss with a towel skirt. Myf is banging on about “mewing” (she’ll explain), why Zan has watched and loved the new doco on Donna Summer. Thu, 16 Nov 2023 - 36min - 620 - #268: Nipple bra, 1989, Not Hot Halloween
Myf and Zan are back and there’s a lot to catch up on. Like actively choosing to celebrate the headlights being on. Yep, we’re discussing Kimmy K’s nipple bra. Dolly Parton is reportedly going to be presenting an award at the ARIA’s and with both of us heading along we’re wondering if this is our moment. And with Taylor Swift’s “1989” re-recording out, a great long read remembering that time Ryan Adams covered us has us thinking about how women’s pop music is digested differently to men’s singer-songwriter approach. The shocking murder of Lillie James at the St Andrews School, and the response to it by their former principal, reflects the systemic issues with male violence, privilege, and protection. A brilliant editorial captures the feelings many of us have had, in it’s wake. And Halloween has once again brought out the “hot” looks but frankly, we’re here for the freak show. And Heidi Klum has some excellent competition. Zan is banging on about Rhys Nicholson’s excellent memoir, and Myf is watching Theatre Camp. It’s finally here, Britney Spears highly anticipated memoir “The Woman In Me” is out, and Zan has read it all in one hit. We go in with all you need to know, as Britney reclaims her story. It’s been a big week for Beyonce too, as we mark 10 years since she visited Brunswick, and she releases a new perfume to mark the occasion. Maybe not related, but we’ll say they are. Kings of Leon have come a long way from their southern charm, and are being called out for being absolute dicks at a festival by Groove Armada. Pass the popcorn. And a 90’s dream union has come true, with the children of icons continuing the dynasty. Goatees are back (ew), and AI has a hotness problem. Have you noticed? It’s raining memoirs, and we’ve got the dish on Britney Spear’s forthcoming tell all, and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s mic drop revelations in her just released “Worthy”. Dolly is lobbing in too, she loves a good book, and we’re here for it. Nicholas Cage is shooting a movie in south-west WA and we’re living for the reportage around his local spottings. And on the East Coast, the Dugong is being pitched as the perfect Olympic mascot. A grazing sea cow that is a bit shy? Let’s go. Thu, 19 Oct 2023 - 38min - 616 - #265: Beckham, Gaffa Banana, Silent Walking
#265: Beckham, Gaffa Banana, Silent Walking It’s been a full on week, and we’re here to give you a little reprieve if you need it. Fat Bear Week is here to help us, we have a winner, she is amazing, and we celebrate Grazer. Meanwhile Bang Fam are rallying around the Peregrine Falcons after their fortunes took a turn. The conceptual art piece “Comedian” (a banana gaffa taped to a wall) is coming to Melbourne for the NGV’s Triennial, so it’s time for Myf’s critical art eye. And for Zan to wonder who’s hungry. 90’s sitcoms are back, but why? Frasier is recreating the nostalgia to the letter, while Jerry Seinfeld has been hinting of some sort of return. We explain all. Looking back seems to be the way we’re moving forward across culture in general, with none doing it better or bigger this week than the Beckham docu-series on Netflix. We dig into this epic story of Posh and Becks, football and fantasy, and a heavy dose of bad new millenium fashion. And a great read on how the internet isn’t fun anymore has crystallized a lot, and made us wistful for the world wide web. Could switching it all off and going silent walking be the answer? Myf is banging on about the second series of Billie Piper’s brilliant series I Hate Suzie, while Zan is reading Kazuo Ishiguro’s classic The Remains of the Day. Myf and Zan are frothing at the news that Beyoncé will bring her Renaissance tour to the big screen; we share what we know so far. In Vegas, U2 are putting on their own show. In a sphere. We review it (without having seen it). Stevie Nicks is being immortalised as a Barbie, and it’s “goodbye girl boss, hello snail girl” as some women switch their priorities from hustle to hammock. And at Paris Fashion week there’s much bravery and courage as women ditch the make-up and stop getting their roots done. Bang On has been obsessed with bears of late, and it continues this week cos it’s officially Fat Bear Week! Where Myf goes with this one, you have to hear. Thu, 05 Oct 2023 - 41min - 614 - #263: Bears, Drew Barrymore, Russell Brand
Myf and Zan are back after a break and catching up on the last two weeks of music, art, life and stuff. A lot has happened. Split ups, bears in Japan, brush-turkeys at Myf’s house… The writers strike has ended too, but one star broke early and the backlash against Drew Barrymore’s decision to return to work has been sizeable. Meanwhile Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner has decided that if you’re not male or white you’re not a master, and all those covers and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame history is starting to make sense. One of the biggest stories of the past fortnight has been the allegations against Russell Brand. We take a look at the media culture, and complicity, surrounding it all. And the reason women often stay silent. And it’s September which means FARSHUN. We take you to Venice where people are wearing undies (and not much else), and a wild show at Milan Fashion Week which is more a statement than a collection. In related news, Zan is banging on about The Super Models docu-series and Myf is watching HBO doco Telemarketers. Wow, what a week. We really do cover it all on Bang On and partake in a healthy amount of googling, too. Yep, Myf and Zan are back to make sense of the week that was; music, art, life, and birds. Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet’s rumoured dating has been publicly confirmed in the VIP tower at Beyonce’s LA show. Smooching and smoking was just the pressie she wanted. Meanwhile down the road in Nevada people have been stranded at Burning Man after an unseasonable downpour. Are we allowed to enjoy it? The Yes campaign has been gifted its soundtrack courtesy of John Farnham, and a beautiful piece of writing from a prisoner about Taylor Swift, has floored us. And there’s a lot of animal chat this week. A lot. Bird sniffers, allegedly thieving koalas, the peregrine falcons are back. We are giddy with excitement. It’s a huge ep, enough to tide you over while Zan visits her Convenience Store Woman, and catches up on Myf’s plane watch recommend of the Bee Gee’s doco. Thu, 07 Sep 2023 - 54min - 612 - #261: The forcible kiss, Cat Person film, …And Just Like That finale
It’s a big week for Bang On, and a lot can happen in seven days. Last ep the revolt against Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales was just kicking off, since then there have been calls for his dismissal, rallies in the street, hunger strikes, and a fair dose of blokes claiming victim hood. We catch up on it, and an excellent piece by Annabel Crabb that explains and eviscerates it all. The commercial value of women in sport, entertainment and business has been ignored for too long, and some solid numbers prove that you ignore at your peril. But what about women in STEM? A new study shows that celebrating inclusivity in science, technology, engineering and maths should start in the classroom, but we’re failing. Remember Cat Person? That viral short story from the New Yorker that had many of us resonating with it? Well now it’s a film, and we have the details for you. And Sarah Jessica Parker has become a cat person, adopting the little fluffball that popped up in the final episodes of S02 of …And Just Like That. It’s over, we have thoughts, and yes – we debrief in full at the season finale. And we’re banging on about escapist worlds in Asteroid City and the power of language in The Dictionary of Lost Words. Thu, 31 Aug 2023 - 45min - 611 - #260: Matildas legacy, AFL closet, Britney & Sam
Myf’s made her road trip north and has all the news from life on the road with Vyv. There’s heaps to catch up on too, as Myf and Zan reunite to reflect on the Matildas wins and how they celebrated. There’s a lot of talk of legacy too, and the changes being made in women’s sport overall. One thing that hasn’t changed is inappropriate behaviour at the workplace: Spanish Football Federation boss, we’re looking at you. Meanwhile in the AFL, a 4 Corners story on gay players within the league has us thinking about the legacy of that taboo, and why it still exists. Britney Spears and Sam Asghari have announced their divorce, and it’s hot girl summer on overload (with the Britney army protecting their queen). And we’ve warmed to And Just Like That so much we’re talking about S03 and our hope for spin offs. Myf’s still in her podcast era and banging on about a recent chat between Abbie Chatfield and Yumi Stynes, while Zan is weeping contentedly in the cinema at Past Lives. Thu, 24 Aug 2023 - 39min - 610 - #259: Matildas, Before Smartphones, Only Murders
The nation is screaming “goooooooooooooal!” as the Matildas bring in the numbers and we froth over football in the Women’s World Cup. Myf and Zan are revelling in it all, and what this moment will do for girls in the future. And a 1st gen iPod from 2001 has sold for almost US$30k! Why? Why not? Only Murders in the Building returns for a third season, and Zan is glued to the Paul Rudd screen. Thu, 10 Aug 2023 - 35min - 609 - #258: Logies, Doja Cat, John Farnham
Myf and Zan went to the Logies and we have goss. The wild red carpet, the neverending awards ceremony, and which celebs Zan pulled a netball manoeuvre on. Meanwhile Doja Cat has been going off on one on socials, we dig into why – and how parasocial relationships are changing the invisible contract between artist and fan. But was there one in the first place? Have you ever put deodorant on your face? Our minds are blown this week (with roll on) and Myf is on board, and MSCHF are up to it again, and making a big yellow Crocs statement in the name of art. And we’re banging on about the John Farnham doco Finding The Voice, and Linda Marigliano’s memoir Love Language. Tue, 01 Aug 2023 - 44min - 608 - #257: Sinead, Greta makes history, Cocaine shark
Myf and Zan wake to the sad news of Sinead O’Connor’s death, and reflect on her power, her protest, and her extraordinary voice which lifted us and gave a voice to so many without one. Barbie has made history at the box office, with Greta Gerwig pulling in the biggest opening weekend by a female film director ever. But some conservative are in an absolute tizz about it. Meanwhile Myf’s questions are finally answered as Vanity Fair launches an investigation into why movies are so long. And we dig into celebrity skin culture, another way women are hamstrung by the cycle of beauty, expectations, and “fixing” ourselves. It’s been a big week of high and low brow too, with Zan raving about a great book of essays and Myf bingeing on a true crime podcast about a very specific crime. We got you, always. Thu, 27 Jul 2023 - 44min - 607 - #256: Barbenheimer, Actors Strike, Selling Out
It’s a huge episode this week, as Myf and Zan finally see the Barbie film and we’ll give you our (spoiler free) thoughts. Zan backed it up with Oppenheimer too, so dig into that movie sandwich. Both films squeezed in their premieres just before American actors joined their writer colleagues in a strike; we unpack what it all means for the people who create all the stuff we bang on about every week, and the future of the industry (and what will be on on our screens in a year’s time). The Bear S02 has finally landed on local screens and is as stressful as S01, and if reality tv is more your bag prepare yourself for what Myf’s found for you. A book on sex education has been removed from a major Australian retailer’s shelves too. Why? We dig into a great read on the very 90’s concept of “selling out” and how it relates to today’s music model, there’s some FARSHUN, and we’re banging on about the podcast Empire, and a brilliant read on “girls”. It’s been a big week for showing the receipts. If you’re catching up on what is going on with Jonah Hill and his ex GF Sarah Brady, we’ll fill in the blanks. But will we be talking about it in Threads? A week in from Zuckerberg’s take on Twitter and we’re wondering what it’ll be and how much time we have for more social media apps. Speaking of which, a TikTok food trend “girl dinner” has a lot of people talking, and Britney Spears’ highly anticipated tell-all memoir has been given its release date. And if you’re wondering why people are getting around in 50’s polo’s, loose slacks, and loafers, it’s FARSHUN. But it’s also Kramer. Thu, 13 Jul 2023 - 605 - #254: Mattel movies, Adele dares you, Beige-fluencers
Myf and Zan are back and Zan has the goss from the Barbie press conference in Bondi last week. It’s the first film to come from Mattel’s film arm, but it certainly won’t be the last. We discover the plans for Polly Pocket, He-Man, and some toys you never imagine could be movies. People are throwing more unhinged stuff on stage, and we try to understand this cultural “moment”, meanwhile women can finally wear non-white undies at Wimbledon. That’s progress. And speaking of shades, why is everything so goddamn beige these days? A ripper piece on “beige-fluencers” has us looking into the motivation to be in control. And bland. Thu, 06 Jul 2023 - 42min - 604 - #253: Glastonbury, And Just Like That, Barbie Dreamhouse
It’s been a huge weekend at Glastonbury with all kinds of wild things going down. We wrap it all; from Tilda Swinton and Cate Blanchett’s cameos, to Lana and Lewis singalongs. Not to mention Rina Sawayama’s pointed take down of Matty Healy. While we’re talking live music, people seem to be throwing stuff at musicians of late. Notably, phones. Why? And we’ve watched the first two eps of “And Just Like That”, we’ll share our thoughts. A tour through Barbie’s Dreamhouse on Architectural Digest has us dreaming of living in a Barbie World and maybe we can, if Air BnB has anything to do with it. Tue, 27 Jun 2023 - 45min - 603 - #252: Indiana Jones, Microscopic Handbag, Pharrell at LV
It’s a treat for the eyeballs this week, as Zan gets a preview of the new Indiana Jones film. You’ll hear her take, and what Phoebe Waller-Bridge does for the franchise. The trailer for Sophia Coppola’s “Priscilla” movie just dropped too, and we are ready, Taft in hand. An Australian lolly is about to be discontinued, and Myf has some hot takes on the chewy classic, and with the Sussex’s Spotify deal coming to an end, we wonder if the ex-Royals will ever be able to move forward if people only ever want them to look back? Huge week for farshun too, and by huge I mean tiny. It’s been another bumper week, and we’re here to unpack it all with you. Zan saw Jennifer Coolidge and Mike White in convo with an 8000 strong crowd of high end gays, and gives you the highlights of a life affirming conversation. The Idol has been getting attention for all the wrong reasons, specifically one of the worst sex scenes in TV history. We bring in a special guest to unpack it. Meanwhile Netflix has opened a pop up restaurant; what show do you want to eat? Miriam Margolyes is the cover girl for British Vogue, and that is how it should be, and Paul McCartney has revealed there will be a new Beatles song with a little help from his friends. Namely, AI. It’s been a big week of finales, and we celebrate the iconic winner of Alone Australia and those moments following the reveal. Succession and Ted Lasso have wound up too, but don’t be scared; Myf is still catching up on Succession, and Zan on Lasso, so no spoilers here for now. As we hit record, breaking news about Samantha AKA Kim Cattrall’s appearance on the Sex In the City reboot has us shook (and jazzed). And speaking of reboots, The Office will be getting a local makeover with it’s first ever female boss. The rumoured relationship between Taylor Swift and Matty Healey has a lot of people talking, and plenty of Swiftie’s responding. Is their involvement in her personal life crossing the line? Just hours after we hear the news, Myf and Zan pay tribute to Tina Turner; an icon of music, a survivor who became a Queen, and an inspiration to so many. From our personal recollections, to chatting with her collaborators about working with her, it’s all about Tina as we reunite for Bang On this week. Beyoncé has also been living large this week, after Zan caught her incredible set on Saturday night in Edinburgh. You’ll get the full debrief. Curious about the blue couch meme doing the rounds? Don’t worry, Myf will explain it all. And a piece on sad songs reveals which of us leans in and which doesn’t. Myf is banging on about the TV series everyone is talking about: Jury Duty. It’s a UK Hun, I mean, BANG! Myf is in Liverpool in the thick of Eurovision 2023 and has the kind of access we’ve come to know and love. Come for the gossip, stay for Croatia’s entry. We take the temperature on the ground and online after the King’s Coronation. That was weird. In more exciting news, an attendee at the LA Philharmonic is having a euphoric time out and about. Thu, 11 May 2023 - 38min - 597 - #246: And Just Like That, Rom-Coms, Life Coach Cult
As we hit record, the official trailer for S02 of “And Just Like That” (aka the Sex and the City reboot) has dropped. Do we care? Of course we do. Next door on HBO, a new Harry Potter series is brewing with some changes afoot. The death of Barry Humphries has drawn different reactions from all corners. Sammy J captures the complexities of farewelling the comic who said some crook stuff in his final years. And we’ve got an update from Matthew Perry and his relationship with Keanu after the weird stuff he said in his memoir. The rom-com is well and truly back, with 37 coming out this year alone! But they’re looking a bit different in 2023. And it’s a double dose of FARSHUN as we preview the Met Gala and farewell Palazzo Versace. Myf has been watching S02 of Love Me, while Zan has been listening to a new podcast on a life coaching cult. Thu, 27 Apr 2023 - 40min - 596 - #245: Mischa Barton, Frank Ocean, Beef
The world of pop culture really delivered this week. If you’re confused, we got you. Kicking off with why Mischa Barton (yes, of The OC) is coming to Erinsborough. Yep, the Neighbours reboot just got bigger. With the coronation of King Charles on the horizon, and commemorative dish has been announced, but Myf is not impressed. Meanwhile in the States, the Coachella Music Festival’s first weekend had some highs and lows, with everyone talking about Frank Ocean’s headline set. We dig into all we know, and also hear from the teenager who live streamed it all from her phone. TikTok is reaching new highs with disgusting food and WaterTok. Myf and Zan are back with you and relocated, with Myf setting up shop in a new city once again. Can you feel a paddle steamer bang on coming? Tupperware’s future is uncertain, with the legendary air-tight product experiencing a downfall in the modern day. We dig into their legacy, and what it means for our beloved spew bowls. And speaking of the olden days, a journo switching off streaming and switching back on free to air TV has interesting results. We debrief on the joys of having decisions made for you. Heaps of people are chatting about a piece on “therapy-speak”, and how it’s damaging some friendships. And yes, we chat about that latest episode of Succession. #243: Barbie, Fatphobia, Stealth Wealth It’s another wild week and we’re here to make sense of it, support donkeys in tow. The new trailer for the Barbie movie has dropped and we are salivating at the pink plastic universe coming our way. Rod Stewart has been making trips to Bunnings while in town, we explain why. With Ozempics, The Whale, and the Kardashians new looks, writer Rebecca Shaw senses the noughties fatphobia is making a comeback. Her great piece is a reminder of why that’s damaging to us all. And the “ludicrously capacious” bag in Tom Wambsgans sights tells a bigger story about how the very rich choose to show their wealth. Meanwhile Myf is bingeing Wellmania, while Zan is laffing it up at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Myf and Zan are back to wrap the week that was, including Myf’s debut on the big screen and some ch-ch-changes in Zan’s world. It’s looking certain that White Lotus S03 will be set in Thailand, while in New York City the Roys are back for Succession’s final season. We discuss all we know so far. Gwyneth Paltrow is the gift that keeps giving, and her civil trial for a skiing mishap has been one of the most entertaining and ridiculous stories of the week. We lean in, in category 5 neutrals, and share our favourite moments from the Utah courtroom. And speaking of privilege, a new nepo baby has been discovered in the audition room of American Idol. Farshun gets a look in too. Did Pope Francis really don a couture puffer jacket? Or is AI to blame/thanks? Well it’s certainly been a time online. Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars’ daughter was grounded, got bored, and inadvertently launched her filmmaking career on TikTok. Confused? We’ll explain it all. Meanwhile TikTok is going absolutely off chops after Gwyneth’s appearance on a wellness podcast has her espousing some questionable health approaches. What is rectal ozone therapy? Again, we got you. #240: Oscars, Hugh Grant, Meg White Ooh it’s a big one this week, as we unpack THE awards ceremony of every year, the Oscars. From the champagne (beige) carpet, to what Hugh Grant said on it. Little donkeys and Cocaine Bear’s. We celebrate the reason for the season too, the incredible and historic wins in a year dominated by Everything Everywhere All At Once. The Oscars gift bags get a look in too, for better and worse. Why were bits of Aboriginal land gifted, with an Indigenous groups name attached, without their knowledge? And it wouldn’t be a red/beige carpet event without a shit ton of FARSHUN. Oh we have a lot to unpack here. Meanwhile Lizzo is coming to Australia (yay!), and Meg White’s drumming is being called out by some guy and said guy is regretting that tweet a lot. It’s been another big week for Myf and Zan, in private and public, and we catch up on Bjerth, missing cues on the Rocky Horror stage, and meeting the guy who wrote “I Want It That Way”. It’s also 6 years to the day that Bang On first popped into your podcast feed! Oh yes, we go back to the tapes… We were chatting International Women’s Day then, and still are now. What’s changed in that time? And what are the conversations we’re fed up with having? Owen Wilson is soon to star as a certain painter in an amazing looking movie, in house art critic Myf Warhurst tells you everything you need to know. And Jamie Lee Curtis has captured a feeling, crying out for nanna gigs for those of us who like an early night. With fashion weeks and awards ceremonies allowing for many a catwalk and red carpet, the disappearing of clothing in the name of empowerment and fashion has us thinking. We’re not alone, as Kerri Sackville wonders if men should be chasing that same empowerment through shedding cloth. And we’re banging on about a great Australian series, and a sumptuous memoir from Stanley Tucci. White Lotus is winding up and we’re on the edge of our seats, but importantly – which character would we most like to take back to our fancy hotel room? Myf and Zan are digging into a brilliant thinkpiece on just that. A couple of weeks ago we got the Macquarie Word of the Year, now it’s Oxford’s turn and the results prove that dictionaries are Bang Fam. Meanwhile it’s a bear, and not bird, week. Balenciaga have confused and upset a lot of people with their latest campaign showing BDSM bears in the hands of children. And the highly anticipated trailer for Cocaine Bear has dropped. Take our money. We reflect on the legacy and legend of Christine McVie too, and are banging on about two brilliant books from two brilliant women. Myf and Zan are back and oh boy, there’s a lot to catch up on. We’ve been glued to the telly with the Kath & Kim specials, news of Neighbours returning (what?), and the promise of even more White Lotus. The Macquarie Dictionary are offering up their contenders for word/phrase of the year and there are some Bang On classics in the mix. And speaking of Bachelor’s Handbags, there’s more bird talk this week. Maybe we should rebrand to Bird On? Dolly Parton has finally been inducted to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, and we look back at the road to this momentous moment. And the Paris Olympics have unveiled their 2024 mascots. They’re very, pleasurable. Meanwhile we’ve had our noses in some great Australian books, and are banging on about Wil Anderson’s new memoir, and Holly Throsby’s latest murder mystery. Myf and Zan are back to flick through the week that was and explain WTF happened. A man in Philly has eaten 40 rotisserie chickens in 40 days, there’s that. Speaking of birds, Myf has an important update on her beloved Collins St Peregrine Falcons. Meanwhile Twitter’s “imminent demise” has a few people switching to the Mastodon social platform, we explain what it is. If you’ve noticed that celebs have flipped back to the “heroin chic” look of the 90’s, you’re not alone. A new piece by Jameela Jamil unpacks this step back in body positivity (and health). And in the name of all things frivolous and fun, the annual Goop Gift Guide is out and we’re making our list and checking it twice. Thu, 10 Nov 2022 - 35min - 581 - #231: Heidi’s Worm, Elon’s Twitter, Coming Out
It’s Halloween and you know what that means: celebs dressing up in hot costumes. Not so with Heidi Klum, Halloween’s biggest fan, who has topped all of her previous efforts by dressing up as a giant earthworm. We talk about why this slimy turd is so compelling. Speaking of scary, several lions escaped from their enclosure in Taronga Zoo this week, and we’re wondering what they were looking for. Taylor Swift has made history (again), and Elon Musk has everyone in a tizz with his acquisition of, and plans for, Twitter. And a ruling on the gossip columnist whose behaviour caused Rebel Wilson to prematurely come out is timely, in a week when Heartstopper actor Kit Connor is being hounded for supposed “queer baiting”. Thu, 03 Nov 2022 - 33min - 580 - #230: Björk, Beyoncé, Breaking up with Ye
It’s been another headline filled week, but never fear – Myf and Zan are your cliff notes, and making sense of it all. It’s been a big week in music too, with Björk announcing her first live performances in Australia since 2008! Taylor Swift dropped an album, ICYMI, and Tina Knowles-Lawson is once again leaking all the good stuff re: her daughter on her socials, including a Beyoncé World Tour. Rihanna is back as well, with her first new music in 6 years! One artist many have been turning the volume down on, is Kanye West. A pattern of hate speech has him finally deplatformed, with major collaborators including Adidas, Def Jam Recordings, and his own agency, distancing themselves from him. What happens next? The Crown has dropped its season five trailer and we’re living in the “Annus horribilis” era of the Royals. Sign us up. Meanwhile, Bono has apologised for (and explained why) the uninvited intrusion of a U2 album on everyone’s iTunes back in the day, and Myf has a “f**k hut” to tell you about. This alone, is worth the whole episode. If that ain’t enough, we’re banging on about a great new series on SBS On Demand, and a Hollywood rom com with a twist. Myf and Zan are back and oh boy there’s a lot to catch up on. Much of it food related, weirdly; from roast chicken handbags as art, to butter boards (wtaf), and Olivia Wilde’s “special salad dressing”. James Cordern is being banned from eating out, for good measure. More locally, the Bureau of Meteorology caused it’s own storm with an attempt at rebranding this week. Thu, 20 Oct 2022 - 36min - 578 - #228: Funeral Spider, Nick Cave’s Pottery, Mariah's Grunge
Yeah look it’s a bit of a weird one this week. All good, Myf Warhurst and Zan Rowe make sense of it for you as per. The Queen’s funeral has taken place and in amongst the meticulously planned ceremony, some outlier events have all of us talking. Yes, we’re referring to the spider, and that bit of paper on the ground. The end of this long period of mourning, respect, and reflection has been felt in different ways across different communities. Stan Grant’s brilliant and heartbreaking editorial for ABC News asks us to consider how the past two weeks has felt for those who were colonised by the Crown. Meanwhile high in a Collins Street skyscraper in Melbourne, a hectic love triangle is playing out and only one will survive. Myf wraps up the Peregrine Falcon drama playing out for all to see. And fans of the original Serial podcast; we have an update on the case of Adnan Syed. Mariah Carey revealed she once recorded a grunge album when she unveiled her brilliant biography a couple of years ago. Now she’s planning on releasing it with new vocals to the world. And speaking of things we didn’t see coming, Nick Cave and Brad Pitt are just like us: they’ve been doing pottery during lockdown and have something to show for it. We go inside their ceramics exhibition in a Finnish gallery. Told you. Wild week. Myf is banging on about a great read from one of our fave writers Brigid Delaney, while Zan is lapping up the brilliant new Björk podcast which unpacks her whole back catalogue of albums. Wed, 21 Sep 2022 - 35min - 577 - #227: The Emmys, The Little Mermaid, The Monarchy
Myf and Zan make sense of a week dominated by one news event, but with plenty of pop culture tugging at our attention. The Emmy’s provided plenty of reminders of TV we loved, missed, or clean forgot that we watched in the first place, and a rare magical TV moment as Sheryl Lee Ralph took to the stage. Staying with the screen, the trailer for Disney’s live action remake of The Little Mermaid got a whole lot of attention, but we’re mostly here for the real time reacs from young black girls at the Ariel reveal. The biggest story of the week is of course the Queen’s death, and we’re reflecting on the conversations some are saying are “too soon” to be having, on the role of the Monarchy in modern day Australia. The sudden and sad death of Uncle Jack Charles has knocked us for six, and we remember his incredible light and legacy. Meanwhile Myf has been digging into the new Heartbreak High reboot on Netflix, and Zan is reading children’s stories of a different kind, by Chloe Hooper. And why are famous folks sharing hot pics of themselves as teenage dirtbags? We debrief on the Raising Their Voices report too, and talk about what comes next in the Australian music industry. Myf’s back from Bali and she and Zan have a lot to bang on about. Pool times, hanging with the PM, all of it. It’s been a big week for Britney too, with the release of her new Elton John collab, and a 22 minute audio recording detailing her conservatorship. We debrief on the MTV VMA’s too (WTF), and the biggest mic drop of the night; Taylor Swift’s announcement of her new album. And wonder, with some help from TikTok, what it may sound like. Myf and Zan are back to make sense of the week that was, and mourn the unnecessary loss of Freya the 600kg walrus. The Bang Box has been overflowing with your sweet emails, and also some nice surprises from young nudists. Speaking of getting your gear off, Tommy Lee did, but who asked for it? We dissect the double standards of Instagram censorship. And an editorial on our connection to music as we age has us thinking about our own musical journeys. Thu, 18 Aug 2022 - 34min - 572 - #223: Olivia Newton-John, Malcolm Gladwell, Nudists
Myf and Zan are here to make sense of the week that was in all its lows and highs. We’ve lost some icons of late, and we pay tribute and show thanks. Meanwhile Malcolm Gladwell reckons we need to get back to the office which is frankly a BIT RICH coming from him, Mr Laptop on the Couch. Naturism, or getting in the nuddy, is making a comeback in these pandemic times and we investigate why. And Frank Ocean hasn’t shared any music but has released a $25k cock ring via his fashion label. And we’re banging on about some music watches; a three part doco on Woodstock ’99 and the phenomenal new David Bowie film Moonage Daydream. Thu, 11 Aug 2022 - 40min - 571 - #222: Neighbours finale, Beyonce’s Renaissance, Got the Ick?
Myf and Zan are back and absolutely champing at the bit to bang on this week. Which is a perfect horse reference for Beyoncé’s Renaissance album (see: cover art). We go in deep on all facets of this instant club classic, and some of the backlash it’s received. We also dip into a larger discussion around releasing, then changing an album. Is an album, as a “finished” piece of art, much more malleable in the digital age? The finale of Neighbours had us in absolute tears, and we debrief on all our favourite moments and just why Kylie and Jason had so few lines. And a fascinating piece on the “ick” and how it can end a relationship has us in stitches. Meanwhile it’s a big foodie bang on, with Myf watching Aftertaste and Zan reading Jess Ho’s memoir Raised By Wolves. Thu, 04 Aug 2022 - 42min - 570 - #221: Vabbing, Hathahate, Joni Mitchell
This is one of those weeks where Bang On truly has it all. Myf and Zan start with a 600kg sun-loving walrus, and end with vagina perfume. In between, we wrap the week that was, including the solving of the mysterious Somerton Man (Zan wants to rewind to when he was a mystery). A teaser for the new Black Panther movie has us in a tizz, particularly cos one of our faves is in it. And a reflection on the massive pile on to Anne Hathaway in the noughties is reframed through a new generation’s viewpoint. Thu, 28 Jul 2022 - 41min - 569 - #220: Bennifer Wedding, Performative charity, Reclaiming HOT
Zan and Myf are back and have lots to catch you up on! It’s a time of celebration too, with J Lo and Ben Affleck hitting Vegas for a quickie wedding (20 years in the making). Meanwhile on the streets of Melbourne an act of “kindness” has gone viral for two very different reasons, and we’re digging into our reactions to performative charity and who it targets. And a piece on the “end of ambition” has us thinking about the cumulative effect of everything that’s hit us over the past two years, and how it’s shifted us, across generations, forever. In fun news, we’re here for the reclaiming of “hot” (Paris, you were ahead of your time), and banging on about a great podcast and a cracking read. Thu, 21 Jul 2022 - 32min - 568 - #219: Barbie, Thor, Looking Black
It’s been a whirlwind coupla weeks and Myf and Zan have heaps to catch up on. TV adventures as the ABC celebrates 90, book deadlines, and what it’s like to be in a trigger ban state when Roe V Wade is overturned. In more joyful news, Rihanna has become the youngest female billionaire, and Only Murders in the Building is back (with a helluva guest cast). The internet is frothing at images emerging from the Barbie movie shoot, and we catch you up on everything you need to know. It feels like the '80s is having a real resurgence at the mo, with the new Thor film leaning sonically and visually toward that decade too. And fashion is feeling it; google trends show that the rise of legwarmers is upon us. Thank you, Stranger Things. Bang On Live is on the cards, we let you know where you can find us in late October! It’s the return of Queen B, and we are bouncin’ to her new single and how perfectly it captures the moment. Like all things Beyoncé, there are layers and layers, and we dig in. Myf has been hitting the red carpet for the Logies, so we catch up on all the goss from TV’s night of nights. Ooh it’s been a big week. Britney got hitched (a dream wedding with a dream reception guestlist), while Lizzo’s new single features a word we weren’t expecting to hear in 2022. The outing of Rebel Wilson by a gossip columnist has dominated discussion; and made for some hot shoe shuffles and stumbles in the apology department. Meanwhile the dress Kim Kardashian wore to the Met Gala has been returned to the museum, but Marilyn’s iconic sheer frock is looking a little different. The iceberg lettuce shortage has us talking leaf, while on the other side of the pond the Platty Jubes is trying to shore up support for the monarchy. Meanwhile the European Union has stepped in to decree that there should only be one charger for all devices (hallelujah), and Julia Garner is set to portray Madonna in a new biopic written and directed by Madge herself. Thu, 19 May 2022 - 35min - 560 - #212: Met Gala, Female “juniors”, Balldo
It’s fashun Christmas! And we’re real time reacting to the red carpet at the Met Gala as the “gilded age” is revealed. Who nailed it? Who phoned it in? And who wore puffa?? A timely biography on Anna Wintour has us reflecting on her power too, and recommending one helluva fashion doco. Women are increasingly naming their kids after themselves, a la “junior” boys, and a great piece on the patriarchal conventions of names has us thinking. And Myf has been googling some weird stuff. What’s a balldo? Listen and you’ll find out. Tue, 03 May 2022 - 34min - 559 - #211: Elon Musk, Cynthia Plaster Caster, Jonathan Franzen
We're back after a couple of weeks of adventures, some less pungent than others. And in the time since we last met, Elon Musk has bought Twitter for US$44 billion. We unpack what it might mean for the site, and who benefits from the free speech he touts. A short read on the (hopeful) death of the handshake has us thinking about what we learned and what we’ve left behind in the pandemic. And the passing of Cynthia Plaster Caster has us reflecting on one of the world’s most notorious groupies, and singular artists. We're banging on about heart-warming queer love stories on Netflix, and the epic new novel from Jonathan Franzen. Thu, 28 Apr 2022 - 34min - 557 - #209: Oscars hot takes, Oscars fashun, Vulva Spacecraft
Well it has been a big week for hot takes. Our heads are spinning, but we’re making sense of all the ways the world reacted to “the slap” at this year’s Oscar ceremony. If you’re wondering what else happened on the night, good news; plenty of good stuff. We’ll wrap on the big highlights and most moving moments. And debrief on the best lewks on the red carpet. The Academy Awards has sucked up a lot of time this week, but don’t worry we’ve found a corner to chat about the Vulva Spacecraft. If you don’t laugh you’ll cry right? And other things we find to say about the ill thought out logo for the government’s Women’s Network. Myf and Zan are weeding through the week to debrief on the most talked about stuff… and we’ve watched all of Byron Baes. We have thoughts. We’re also deeply connected with going full goblin mode. Thu, 17 Mar 2022 - 01min - 555 - #207: Byron Baes, IWD, Severance
It’s finally here, Netflix’s first locally commissioned show whose mere existence was already divisive. What do Myf and Zan make of Byron Baes? It’s quite the time for reality on Netflix – however that’s constructed – and we’re curious about what it says about us. Are we being wilfully scammed at every turn? International Women’s Day was this week, and a piece on whose voices are being amplified in Australia has cut right through. And we’re banging on about a joyful substack, and the new Apple TV show Severance. Thu, 10 Mar 2022 - 32min - 554 - #206: The word is CAP, Decline of the Girl Boss, Jon Ronson
It’s been a brutal week, and Myf and Zan are finding the light wherever we can. A viral tweet on a Wheel of Fortune FAIL helps a lot, as does one of the funniest and heartfelt fine dining restaurant reviews we’ve ever read. Meanwhile as we continue the march towards equality through the now 4th wave of feminism, a piece on the decline of the “Girl Boss” has us thinking: are we just doing the heavy lifting again? Bang Fam have come through with more intel on where the Super Bowl Half Time show performers hid during their quiet moments, and Myf is banging on about series two of Starstruck, while Zan has devoured Jon Ronson’s new podcast series on the culture wars. Everyone is talking about the “vibe shift” and Myf explains what it is, when it’s happening, and if we’re doing it right. Following our conversation last episode about romantic love not being all it’s cracked up to be, some more think pieces on Platonic Life Partnerships have popped up; is this the bond you see yourself committing to? Meanwhile the first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” has dropped and we are all in, and casting has begun for an Australian version of ALONE; lockdown city citizens should feel well placed to pitch for this. Tue, 22 Feb 2022 - 35min - 552 - #204: Romantic Love, Super Bowl, Post Languishing
It’s post Valentines Day and Myf and Zan are catching up on what we did, and thinking about what maybe we should do instead. The ideas of romantic love have long been flawed and out of date, is it time to rethink the stories we tell ourselves? The start of this week also kicked off with a history making moment for hip-hop and culture, as the Super Bowl half time show celebrated the world’s biggest genre for the first time. And last year we were languishing, what now? A new piece on how to get out of the rut has us thinking, in this third year of the pandemic. Thin eyebrows are back in fashion, and we are not having it! Bang Fam bang back to us about our chat on Pam & Tommy and we’re hear to listen. And we’re banging on about a new book on history from a non-male perspective, and the film The Lost Daughter. We unpack how and why these two women continue to floor us with their strength, as they keep their foot on the pedal and empower us to do the same. Everyone is watching the new Netflix doco The Tinder Swindler, and frankly we have more questions than answers. The news that Neighbours could be coming to an end has us reflecting back on a show we literally grew up with, and the Oscar nominations have been revealed (we have some catching up to do). The wholesome backstory of Wordle has taken on another context, with the news that the NY Times has purchased the word game for a figure “in the low 7’s”. And Neil Young’s protest against Spotify’s housing of Joe Rogan’s podcast is gathering steam, we dig into the how’s, why’s, and what next of it all. Myf and Zan are back after their summer break, and we’re rolling off the pool noodles and into 2022 with our Wordles sorted. And Just Like That... has settled in over the break too, and we catch up on how the Sex & the City reboot is traveling. Grace Tame has wound up her epic stint as Australian of the Year, but not before being slammed by some media by how she engaged with the PM. Peter Van Onselen has thoughts, and so do we. And speaking of blokes with opinions on how women do/don’t behave, Damon Albarn has caused a stir by falsely claiming Taylor Swift doesn’t write her own songs. Not today, Damo.
