Clean No Longer: Joy and Annie: The Cult have prepped Joy to be Amity’s vessel. She is adorned in flowers and a brides dress. She is a clean vessel ready for the taking. Annie, Chance, Abdi and Nadia have worked out a play to blow things up once Annie and Chance have gotten Joy. But things never go as clean as the plan. Annie & Chance sneak up to property. Chance is moving slowly, liked an enthralled person, towards the house. Vera sees her and says NO and other join her. Chance is captured by the deputy. Annie cannot get through to Abdi & Nadia and so she runs to the house and gives up the plan in order to save Joy. While Pop two other cult members search the tunnels, Annie is kept outside. Abdi & Nadi blow the charge beneath the statue, right before the ceremony begins. The destruction of the statue and freeing of the bugs, breaks the enthrallment and the people begin to run. Joy stabs Augustin and leaves. Annie finds Joy and they are reunited. They get back on the road. Annie discovers a Misery book and begins to read to Joy. Annie is taken away into it ‘s world. They enter Canada and Annie sees a poster for a home health nurse. Annie and Joy have the run of the place. Joy is slowly coming around. But she will not talk about Maine, doesn’t want to change her hair color, is watching things in French and denying phone calls. Annie and the voices in her head are suspicious. She looks in Joy’s drawing book and is horrified. She suspects Joy has been implanted with Amity. She drugs her to get answers. Joy denies it and tries to run off. Annie drowns her and returns to the house in a daze. She finds a letter to her from Joy. It says that she was going away and working with a lawyer for emancipation. Distraught Annie runs to the water and revives Joy. We see a happy Joy and Annie having fun, driving, getting ice cream and more. Joy sketches a perfect likeness of the house calling it the Laughing Place. They go to a book signing for Misery’s Love. We suspected things, but here they were confirmed. We see Annies mother and father in the crowd. A man asks if Joy’s seat is taken and Annie says yes. As Paul Sheldon begins to speak we see the seat is empty. Joy died and Annie totally broke mentally. Both of them Mother & Child/Sister & Step-sister had blood on their hands and neither got out clean.

King Connections: The connections to Misery are clear with three of Paul Sheldon’s books Misery’s Quest, Misery’s Paradise, and Misery’s Love. Misery’s Quest is the first book in the series. Misery’s Paradise falls towards the end and Misery’s Love was the book before Misery’s Child (that sent Annie over the edge) source data can be found here. We had it confirmed from Pop that the Castle Lake area is a Thinny. This is mentioned in many of King’s works. So our choice of book and audio book is Wizard and Glass (fyi this is what Amazon’s proposed Dark Tower series will start off being based on).

Caveat Emptor – Pop vs Augustin: Caveat Emptor was a hostage situation and battle of the wills. Augustin/Ace needed the info Pop had, but he was not going to give up that easily. Pop realizes that the letters between Warden Dale Lacey & Alan Pangborn are the key. He obtained them when he bought Alan’s trailer after he died last year. He pours over the letters. Augustin and the cult got to Dale’s wive, killed her and took her over for info on the Kid. She does not have any info, but knows about the letters and that Pop, the Collector, has them. Pop heads to the hospital and finds Nadia and what happened to Chris. They are getting ready to leave when Chance arrives warning them of the Cult killing the people who didn’t respond to the noice and statue. They race to the Emporium but are stopped just short. The gun battle is not going well, when Abdi slams into the Cult’s car and kills them. The Resistance locks down the Emporium and sets up Pop’s pressure cooker bombs around the doors and windows. They discover Annie and her crew and question them. After Jamal is discovered, the Cult shows up outside. Augustin calls Pop via CB and introduces himself. He offers safe passage out for Abdi, Nadia and anyone else in return for Dale’s papers. Pop says that he burned them, which he does later. Augustin calls Pop out for hitting Ace a lot as a kid. He say he ruined all four of the kids in his care. The battle of the wills via CB continues to ramp up. Augustin says they will kill Pop and take his memories of the letters, but offers to do it easy. Pop say no on retires these days. He says he has wired up a suicide vest and will kill himself first. So Augustin sends in the Cult. Pop is buying time for the others. Abdi, Nadia, and Chris played a game as kids, They ran across the railroad tracks to escape Ace. The train is a mile long and takes a long time to get through town. The Resistance intends to do the same thing now. They fight their way though the Cult members and make it to safety. Pop makes his way back to his office, killing along they way. He injects himself with the mind altering drug on the way. When he arrives at the office Augustin is there. Pop attempts to blow himself up, but it fails. Ace kills him.

    King Connections:

All the floors and layers of the Emporium reminded me a lot of Jonsey’s Memory Warehouse he is trying to get info while being pursued by the enemy. We see the resistance fleeing across the railroad tracks to escape. It reminded me of the train scene from Stand By Me/The Body. We have Annie trying to get her way with a man strapped to a bed and dishing out vengeance on him like in Misery. Pop is called the collector and his Emporium holds things that people will give anything to get to. That plus the mentions of the Mellow Tiger take me back to Needful Things.

No One Wants a Dirty Annie: Annie and Joy have been taken to the Marsten house and Ace is there to greet them. The cult has switched out Annie’s medication with placebos to try and make the weaving process easier. But she is having vision of her mother. Crysilda is telling that they want to use Joy and there is only one way to keep her clean, kill her. Annie is popping pills and brewing tea to try and calm down. But one of the cult members sees Joy’s drawings and takes it to Ace/Augustin. They realize that Joy’s drawing style resembles Amity’s. Ace finds out that Joy is not on any medication and a untainted vessel. So he locks Joy up in the Attic to await the weaving. Annie’s visions of her mother are getting stronger. She sees the door to the basement open and investigates. She finds dead bodies there. Joy is missing and Annie get the info out of a cult member before killing her. She has to take out another with a sledgehammer (hello Misery shoutout). Finally she and Joy are reunited, but Crysilda is begging for Annie to get them out clean. Annie goes to choke Joy, but the memories of baby Joy snap her out of it. They sneak their way to the back door. Outside they find a crowd of enthralled citizens. They are sneaking out when spotting. The crowd begins to move and the two are separated. Annie is captured and Joy is enthralled.

    King Connections:

This week did not have a lot of connections. We see Annie with the sledge hammer and she wields it just like in Misery. We also have two small shout outs to The Shining. We see a wet and decaying Crysilda speaking to Annie. This reminds me of the woman in room 217 who appears in both The Shining and Doctor Sleep. We also have Annie with the big chef’s knife ready to defend her child just like Wendy did.

    The Word of Amity:

Amity Lambert (Mathilde Dehaye) was the daughter New Jerusalem’s head man and the lover of the pastor Pere Augustin (David Alpay. Their crops are dying and they need a word from the Lord. Amity lays all the blame at her father’s feet. When she tries to testify she goes into a seizure. She is chained up and Pere Augustin pleads for her. But her father, Marius Lambert (Thomas K. Belgrey), knows that the Pere has been sleeping with his daughter. He kicks them both out of the town. They wander towards what will be know as Castle Lake. He is taken ill and she is looking for food. Up on the cliffs, where Warden Lacy will one day drive off of and Henry Deaver disappear from, she finds a fire and a figure. This angel of light is really a demon in disguise. It is The Kid (Bill Skarsgard).

Amity makes a deal with the devil and her town is flushing again. She is hailed as their prophet. She has her father and his men burned on upside down crosses. Those who will not follow her directed teachings of the angle are kicked out. Amity and Pere desecrate the church and erect a carved image of the angle. But the deal goes bad and hunger returns. Amity is desperate to get an answer for her people. The bugs we have seen all season come swarming out of the image and Amity has her answer. They dig under the church and create the catacombs. They build coffins. Each member of the town are fed one of the bugs and then their throats are slit. They will return in new bodies in 400 years. Amity gives final instructions to Pere before he kills her and then himself.

    King Connections:

The flashback to 1619 takes place before the King story of Jerusalem’s Lot, but it still reminds us of it. It also reminds us of how the evil of the Vampire in Salem’s Lot could be attracted here. We see a lot of art on the walls of the Marsten house. One reminds me of the Dark Tower. Pop’s brother-in-law is in Shawshank for the murder of his wife. Tim Robbins played a man accused of murdering his wife and put in Shawshank in the Shawshank Redemption. We see a boy in a clown costume with a balloon in the parade, could this be a shout out to IT? A small shout out in the parade was that beautiful 1958 Plymouth Fury. It was a shout out to Christine, so it is our pick of the week.

This week’s book is Christine. Here is a link to the BookAudiobook and Movie.

    The Mother Rita vs Annie:

Rita has moved from California to New York to escape her past and joined AA to help with her addictions. All she wants to do is find her Evangeline and be the mother she was meant to be. She makes it to the Rock and finds Chance, who stonewalls her. But Vera overhears and finds her later for the cash reward. Annie sees her and runs back in the house.

Joy has been taken to a group home by Nadia and the next morning a CPS agent Bannerman talks to her through the door. He asks about her work, if she has documents on Joy and wants to come in. She lies and puts him off. She heads to the group home to talk with Joy. However the receptionist says Joy is talking with her mother. Annie watches from the outside, mirroring last episode where she watched her father’s life from the outside. Rita tells Joy the whole story. Joy is shaken to her core. However she will not allow Rita to call Annie her sister. Rita says she is not there for Annie. She wants to know what Joy wants. Joy tells her to come back later. Rita hits the bar, Annie pops her pills and writes Joy a letter and Joy cries herself to sleep.

Joy has Chance break her out of the home and they are hiding in the woods around Castle Lake. Joy has called Annie and she comes with her letter. They talk things out, but Joy just cannot accept Annie due to the fact Annie was going to kill both of them after murdering their father and attempting to kill Rita. Annie says it was Joy that saved them with her laugh and that the only thing that keeps her straight is Joy. Anne leaves and Chance offers to get them to North Carolina where her step-sister will let them stay. But Joy reads Annie’s letter and has a change of heart.

Rita is waiting for Annie at cabin 19. Joy has called Rita and refused to go with her. Rita confronts Annie and calls her out for snapping about the book dedication, because it made her feel small. Rita takes her into the woods at gunpoint. Annie escapes and struggles with Rita. But Rita is about to shoot Annie when Joy yells out “mom.” Both women look at her. Joy dopes Rita with the emergency knock out drug. Rita tries to fire but the gun drops and shoots her in the stomach. Joy is overwhelmed thinking she killed Rita. Annie is trying to save her, when the cops show up. Annie sees Joy and takes the blame.

    .

    King Connections:

Chance a.k.a. Georgia Lachance is a shout out to Gordon Lachance in “The Body” Stand By Me. The Child and Protective Services agent that questions Annie through the door is Steve Bannerman. Sheriff George Bannerman. He appeared in The Body, Dead Zone, and Cujo. That woman, Heather, rushed up to Nadia’s car, frothing at the mouth, in a way that is reminiscent of Captain Tripps from The Stand. We the cult/witches killing people and putting them in coffins only for them to rise again. One of the ones waiting to be brought back is Amity Lambert. Mary Lambert was the director of the 1989 version for Pet Sematary.

This week’s book is Pet Sematary. Here is a link to the BookAudiobook and Movie.
