Elements Electric is a brand new label out of Dublin, Ireland being brought to life with the latest release from acclaimed local producer Peter Sweeney aka Rustal (393 Records, Diffuse Reality). Heart Drives The Machine is the name of this aptly titled 4-tracker. This is an expansive techno record that touches on acid, electro, house and the aforementioned techno, all of it heavily imbued with influences from the American midwest, most notably Detroit - maintaining the long running connection between the Irish capital and the home of techno. On opener Celestial Flame, Sweeney pitch-bends the acid as hard-hitting syncopated drums bring things back to earth with a gritty thump. Love Not Lost takes a more direct approach to 303-infused deep techno as soaring keys in the background make sure the soul of the machines is never far away as the song continues to ascend. Motor City Man is a fitting title for a song that mainlines a classic 90s Detroit house organ riff over propulsive drums; reminiscent of D1 Recordings at its peak, it's a ready-to-build floor filler if ever there was one. ntrinsic Rhythm is delighted to release new music by Irish Electro great Decal (Alan O'Boyle) that was initially planned for his "Trama Industries" label in the early 2000's with 4 across the physical 12" vinyl release and 8 digitally. Decal on this release - "At the time I'd have been fairly upfront about wanting to release tracks that were faster than most and in a style that wasn't straight electro. Some of these tracks fell into a weird middle ground for me, so they got put aside. It had been 20 years since I'd heard any of them and on listening back I reckoned that time had been kind to them so I started remastering them and uploading to Soundcloud alongside some classic 12" releases from my label Trama Industries. For me, it was interesting to hear sounds and techniques emerging on some later tracks that would form the basis of my later projects like Legion Of Two and Of One. I'd kinda forgotten about that. This weeks entry to the Local Selection welcomes a live recording from two rising DJs Emmie and Faye as they have so kindly shared their set taken from their gig in Wigwam playing for Research before D.Dan back in December. The pair weave through an array of hypnotic cuts throughout the recording which make for a delightful listen. For the 235th edition of the series, we have a superb back-to-back recording featuring Kildare-born and now Dublin-based DJs Emmie and Fayeolo from their show with Research supporting Mala Junta resident and summerpup label owner D.Dan in Wigwam back in December of 2023. Both DJs began mixing when they started college just shy of 2 years ago and have harnessed their skill and dedication during this time while enjoying a range of opportunities as solo artists and as a back-to-back pairing. Showing an impeccable level of understanding of techno, Emmie and Fayeolo derive inspiration from the late 90s and early 00s era of the genre. This has resulted in playing for acclaimed parties such as Slither, Research and Hidden Love across the city in a range of venues, while both artists will enjoy their festival debuts this St. Patrick’s Day at Otherside which will be a fantastic achievement for both artists. As both Emmie and Fayeolo gain more knowledge about the foundations of underground dance music, they delve further into sub-genres of techno. Given that D.Dan possesses quite a hypnotic, groove-driven sound it is clear that the pair explored that particular soundscape while adding their own flare for good measure. The 234th Local Selection Mix is soundtracked by Dublin dance music royalty, Charlie. The veteran DJ shifts through his soul-soaked stacks, selecting a mesmerising hour of rare cuts from glittering disco to dusty jazz-touched grooves. A familiar name to many, Charlie has been slinging records since the early 90’s. It all started after his first visit to Side’s DC in 1990, Charlie knew he wanted to be a DJ and began a lifelong passion for music. It was around this time that Charlie would begin his association with Abbey Discs, the Dublin record hub and Mecca for Irish DJs. Charlie was well-known in the mid to late 1990s for his basement parties at the Ferryman on the quays and whatever other venue he could find. He then went on leave for a few years, returning in 2008 after spending some time with his family. His return to the booth included a support set for the revered Darren Emerson alongside hosting a weekly show with Phever Radio. Following this Charlie would begin to collaborate with friend Pat Hyland to form the Northside Loft Society, which held shows in Tengu. Charlie often performs in Dublin venues such as Hang Dai, Izakaya Basement, Pawnshop, and The Big Romance, to mention a few. Charlie is a proud local DJ who oozes coolness from the moment his fingertips touch the platter of the turntable. Charlie’s submission for the Local Selection exemplifies his remarkable talent for delving deep into his huge collection to unearth hidden jewels and timeless classics, resulting in a nostalgic sound that remains as fresh as ever. French-based label Cielo Records is a techno project from JC Laurent that has so far been a vessel for his own cutting-edge ideas and diverse taste. Having over ten years of production experience to his name, JC Laurent has released on the likes of Coyu's Suara, Abstract Division's Dynamic Reflection, and Deepak Sharma's Hidden Recordings amongst others. Na Nich is a Ukranian artist who features with the solo remix here and can be found on the mighty Delsin Records, Svreca's Semantica, Viels' End of Perception and his own Rhythm Büro. Starting with "Comet" it's a melting pot of dub techno and modular sound effects with an ethereal, analogue presence. Second up is the "Comet (Na Nich Remix)" which adds an even more dreamy textures to some elements turning it into a dystopian soundscape. Arketip Discs is a Barcelona-based vinyl and digital imprint co-founded by Spear and Makuto that has featured music by Reeko, Truncate, Temudo, ORBE and Eduardo De La Calle. Makuto is the label head from Spain with a growing reputation and who has kept his productions exclusively to Arketip Discs so far. “Sfera” is a hypnotic and atmospheric cut with modular accents and tones that morph and expand in sleek style. Hanlon is best known for his work under Apartment Records, one of Dublin’s most illustrious imprints, operating since 2011. For over ten years, the label has offered intricate releases from artists such as TR One, Chase Smith, New Jackson, Belacqua, and countless more, positioning itself as a leader in forward-facing Irish dance music. Hanlon is also involved in one of Ireland’s most unique festivals, Open Ear. Kenny has tirelessly and passionately advocated for nonconformist Irish club sounds, always leaning towards the weird and wonderful corners of the electronic spectrum. The 229th instalment of The Local Selection Mix comes from Influence Resident’s NAT TYPE & FOCKER who provide a live recording from their set at Dublin’s Cellar. The Dubliners join forces for a full-throttle industrial techno affair that is not for the faint of heart. We feature a live recording from Influence’s new event series ‘Influence Invites’ where they aim to give local, upcoming artists a platform to showcase their talent. For the first addition of this show back in October Influence’s very own NAT TYPE & FOCKER went B2B to close out this show after their first B2B closing at Fuinneamh Festival 2023. The first Local Selection of 2024 and the 228th edition of the series comes from Dublin-based DJ and promoter Sean Ruane. The Cynical head honcho manoeuvres through an array of groovy and hypnotic techno over the 65 minutes of his set, primarily paying homage to the genre’s golden era. This week’s entry to the Four Four Local Selection Mix Series welcomes Dublin native Sean Ruane. Having played an array of shows for parties such as Lost, Oblivion, Loose Tooth Dental Club, Somewhere Else and more in venues like Bow Lane, Fibbers, Cellar and The Soundhouse highlights this young DJ’s passion and appreciation for all things dance music. This has lead him to start his own night and mix series titled ‘Cynical’ where the Dublin-based collective aims to showcase a broad range of local and international talent through events and their Cynical Mix Series. We premiere new music from New York natives Avision & Xander as they team up for the ‘Whatever’ EP, a project which has been five years in the making. We premiere the Breaks Mix, a vintage electro-cut that leans on funked-up snare rolls, booming 808’s and a slick vocal hook that catches the groove right from the source. Following Victor Calderone’s relaunch of MATTER+ Recordings alongside Avision, the releases have continued to amaze, with the latest offering seeing Avision team up with fellow New Yorker Xander to piece together an exploratory project they began half a decade ago. “Whatever” defies expectations by delving into his multifaceted understanding of captivating electronic dance genres to create three individually head-turning dancefloor cuts alongside Xander that showcase an innate wealth of creativity between the pair. “Working with Xander has been amazing. Ethereal Skies have recently announced their new venture from a club night that now covers the areas of a mix series and label too. Their inaugural label release is titled 'Aerga' which translates to 'the air or the ether' as Gaeilge, comprising of 21 track contributions from a vast range of Irish and international artists from Dublin and afar in an attempt to platform compelling avant-garde electronic music. NANCY Live provides a new behemoth double-sided single titled ‘Psymon Psays’, forthcoming on Juliet Fox’s label @tregambe NANCY Live (Lauren) caught Juliet’s attention a few years ago; her energy and crazy amount of creativity being the main hook. One thing which particularly stood out for Juliet was a video of Lauren using her nose to trigger a drop on a piece of hardware while playing a live set. The pair eventually connected earlier this year through mutual contacts, and Lauren sent some music over to Juliet to check out. Juliet began to road-test the tracks in her sets and each time they would get a wonderful response. This week's entry to the Local Selection welcomes Dublin-based DJ, producer and Hearpro boss Jamaal Eydan under his newly formed moniker focused on the lighter side of techno. This recording is inspired by summer adventures and features a flurry of fitting selections in the process. Jamaal's foothold within the Dublin dance community has only grown stronger in recent times as the individual behind Hearpro. Which is an earplug company on a mission that asks individuals to surrender their ears to the music without surrendering their hearing. Having seen great success since its launch it has protected numerous dancers and artists alike from hearing loss in the process. Additionally, Jamaal has just recently launched his Posterboy alias and an EP from the project which comprised of 5 groove and vocal-lead techno tracks that included a wide range of percussive elements throughout. This is a step in a different direction from his previous work which lies closer to more fast-paced and harder techno elements. In light of this change of artistic direction, Posterboy has just been announced for his first headline slot which is due to take place this Saturday on the Main Floor in Wigwam. When asked about this new artistic endeavour regarding the Posterboy alias, Jamaal expressed that; Posterboy is a project I started when I wanted to express a different approach to techno than I have in the past. We premiere new music from revered house producer José Cabrera as he releases his Le Bateleur LP on his A Harmless Deed imprint. We feature ‘A Track for Clau’, a Detroit-laced house groove that is rolling in futuristic funk. Accomplished Spanish artist José Cabrera enters a fresh creative chapter with the new album Le Bateleur. The storytelling and hugely personal record arrives on his own A Harmless Deed label and is a deep dive into the house music he has always loved. Over the last two decades and under several aliases, Madrid-born Cabrera established himself as a leading techno producer. He has released influential labels like Fred P’s Soul People Music, Tresor, Deeply Rooted and Ron Moreli`s’ L.I.E.S. records and co-runs A Harmless Deed with friend Damian Schwartz. As a DJ he has toured Europe, Asia, North and South America and proven himself to be an experimental DJ with a long-standing residency at Tresor in Berlin. When the pandemic hit in 2020, Cabrera felt detached from the techno world so used his time at home to explore new sounds. He has always had a love of house so set work on making a proper house record in the mold of greats who went before. He worked with other musicians and vocalists, made use of an array of Roland drum machines, Juno synths and Casio keys to cook up a raw and authentic sound and drew from a wide range of the back music that has soundtracked his life. The resulting album is packed with life and energy, skits from friends and timeless grooves. ‘Track For Clau’ is a hyper-speed future house groove that is bursting with bumping kicks, bouncing bass rhythms and busy synth arps bringing the light to a glossy uplifting house record. Shamanta Chandran), a Toronto modular synth artist and DJ, gears up to release her latest EP Rogue Planet, a new offering that highlights that reflects her early life experiences as a South Asian immigrant who traveled from the Middle East to North America. Taking its title and leading theme of otherness from her late nights tuned into Youtube space channels, it spans ‘90s electronica, dub techno and an experimental nod to South Indian classical music featuring her aunt’s vocals. Coming via Toronto label Cosmic Resonance, it follows her inclusion in Planet E’s Detroit Love compilation series, MSTRKRFT’s ORO Records, and Detroit imprint PITS. A Syrian-born, Tamil-Canadian, Shamanta recalls often feeling like an outsider in Toronto and while briefly living in New Jersey in her teens. On carrying this into her EP, she says: “Rogue Planet is about feeling like an “other”, like a planet ejected by its host planetary system. I’d watch these foreign Youtube channels to fall asleep, but they spurred me to dig deeper and I related to how rogue planets drift untethered and don’t belong to a planetary system. The EP is a reflection of my childhood, constantly changing environment to ultimately find my own. In these new environments I had to find acceptance, build my confidence, resilience and fearlessness, nurture my womanhood, and define my own orbit.” We premiere ‘Deeper High’, one of the more dancefloor focussed tracks on the release, as WeTurnToRed turns her head to Detroit style aquatic electro. The track showcases moody basslines that play off complex atmospheres and jarring percussive rhythms. ‘Deeper High’ is nestled in between forward facing Drexcyian style grooves and up-tempo & in-your-face electro clash flavour.
